Book Description
Before the Brothers' War. Before the five colors of magic.
Before history itself, the plane of Dominaira was ruled by the Thran. They built machines and artifacts, the likes of which have never since been seen. But amid this civilization, a shadow took root, one that would stretch its arms across space and time.
The hideous evil of Phyrexia was born.

The Beginning of the Thran-Phrexian War.......2007-03-31
Before I start my review, I want to say that I have very little experience with the Magic the Gathering card game. Over the years I have collected the cards on and off, but have since quit the game due to lack of friends who play. With that said, I am reviewing this book not from the perspective of a player, but a reader. I am also reading this book before I have started to read the Invasion Cycle. And now, onto the review.
The Thran is the prequel to the three book Invasion Cycle (making this the fourth book in the cycle). The book tells the story of Glacian, a genius from the "city-state" of Halcyon who during a typical day in the mana rig is stabbed by an untouchable (an outcast or a criminal from the society) with a "powerstone". Afterwards, Glacian is hospitalized as he now suffers from a mysterious illness known as phthisis (am unsure of the correct spelling). After regular healing (white magic) proves to only worsen Glacian's condition, a banished "healer" is brought in to try and cure Glacian. However, it appears that this "healer" has an agenda of his own, while making slow and steady strides to cure the disease he plots and schemes until he finally gets what his heart desires. This is the story of Yawgmoth and his rise to power in the Thran empire, how he came to rule, the revolt from the Thran and other races in Dominaria to stop the evil genius, and the creation of the deadliest "plague of creatures" ever, the Phyrexians.
Though, I'm an essential novice to the game of Magic the Gathering, I have to say that I love this book. All the suspense and drama, the betrayals by loved ones, I mean it's all amazing. I had a hard time putting this book down because I was left wondering what would happen to Glacian would he get better or would he perish from the disease the eats away his body. And Yawgmoth, another gripping character, as you go through the book, you're just hoping that someone, anyone realizes what he's doing and tries to stop him. I must say that I am very pleased with how this story ends and can't wait to read the Invasion Cycle. This is a gripping novel of love and loss, deception and betrayal, and the ultimate battle of good and evil.
should be made into several movies.......2006-04-21
The Thran is a deep tale of progressive generation and its roots in civilization. The visions painted in our minds of heavenly cities and floating temples provoke ideas of ascension as if we were citizens of Halcyon itself. The story is enriched with intrigue and open-ended technological innovation in the form of a limitless source of energy. Insights into the brilliant mind of Glacian imbue a sense of wonder at the possibilities of such energy sources. His wife Rebbec has countless inspirations of beauty, and as an archictect they both contribute to the good of the city. Yawgmoth is the catch. He is much more than a character, he is an idea. He is the embodiment of human moral failure, shown through his rape of entire nations for his own means. He is a compulsive liar, and tends to get away with it because anyone who speaks the truth is silenced immediately and branded a sick person who needs to be quarantined. I would love to see this on the big screen, with a high budget. Johhny Depp would make a great Yawgmoth, Sean Bean would make a great Glacian, and Vin Diesel would be awesome as Gix. Angelina Jolie as Dyfed and the woman who plays "M" for 007 as Eldest Jameth.
The begining.......2005-01-05
this is the bomb. If you ever wondered how yawgmouth came to power this is the book you need. Must have
Masterfully done - an incredible reading experience.......2004-06-30
This book is excellent. It has a lot of background information on some important characters in the magic universe. This book takes place before Urza and Mishra, and even before there were colors of magic. In fact, there is no knowledge of magic in "the Thran." This book starts with the knowledge of a Thran-Phyrexian War. It then jumps back and explains the build up to this war - which by the end will leave you wondering what just happened and how the magic universe was drastically affected thousands of years before Urza rocked the world in the Brother's War.
Very interesting book and I recommend it for Magic: The Gathering fans and those who have never played the game. M:TG fans will certainly love the history provided but the story is still so well written and an amazing tale that even people who do not know who Yawgmoth is will still like the book.
Upon finishing this book I wanted to immediately to jump in to the "Invasion" cycle because the Phyrexians are so crazy and powerful. I can't wait.
Awsome. Best book in the world........2001-11-03
The first book I read in this series is Nemisis, then I got Apocalypse, and all time I wanted to know more abot Yawgmoth, Rebbec and Halycon, now I know! This is so good I cried, even the sample pages show how cool the book is. J. Robert King writes the best MTG books (and the funniest and must cursed filled ones.). This is my favorite book in the world.

Fast-paced, thrilling Fantasy!.......2004-08-05
Once again, we're back in the time of Atlantis on the island of Adylonis with the Houses and the Tialsar. House Thran has now managed to regain their prestige on Adylonis after the battle with House Suum. A fact House Suum is not happy about. When the old Jarl Suum dies, his son becomes the new Jarl. Unfortunately, he is even worse than his father ever was and has all kinds of nasty surprises in store for House Thran.
Son of Jarl Thran, Daepar, has married his love, Mara, and they now have one son, Andalarn the Younger. Andalarn has been busier than ever with House business and politics. Meanwhile, Daepar is being groomed for the day he assumes the Jarl. The next thing you know, a messenger arrivers from the Moorkai Council. It appears the Council was ordered to appoint a new Ascendant of Adylonis and the man chosen is Andalarn! Well, he immediately accepts the position. Of course, he knows this means he will have to live in Moorkai and Daepar will take over as Jarl of House Thran.
With Daepar now installed as the new Jarl, Andalarn and Kaelene head to Moorkai. Unfortunately, Andalarn never did get around to telling Daepar about the special "powers" he more than likely inherited. Newly installed as Jarl, Daepar is carrying on House business when a messenger arrives from Moorkai. It appears Mara's father, Solis, an elder of the Moorkai Council, was assassinated. Daepar takes it upon himself to inform his wife. When she hears of her father's death, Mara flies into a rage and swears revenge. Since it is assumed House Suum is behind the assassination, Mara demands Daepar do something in retaliation. Unfortunately, Daepar will not. His parents disappeared on their way to Moorkai and it is believed they are being held by House Suum. All at once, Daepar's decisions are becoming suspect by everyone he believes loyal, from Mara to Loncaer.
What is House Suum planning? Will they once again begin a war on Adylonis? What of Andalarn and Kaelene? Where are they? What of the decisions Daepar is making? Will they cost him the Jarl?
THE BURNING HOUSE is a fast-paced, thrilling fantasy. We once again become caught up with the politics on Adylonis between the Houses and the different races. H. David Blalock has done an excellent job with the characters in this one as well. The action is constant and non-stop, the characters are all believable and the settings are all fantastic. This is one you definitely don't want to miss!
Good Continuation.......2004-01-21
Review: The Burning House
Author: H. David Blalock
Published: Dec 2003
Rating 4 stars
The Burning House is Blalock's second offering in the Thran Chronicles. Fans of Thran Reborn will not be disappointed by this new work. It carries along the story in a roughly chronological fashion and deepens the development of the mythical world of Adylonis.
The majority of the story follows Daepar, son of Andalarn Thran. Andalarn is selected by the Council at Moorkai as Ascendant. He leaves Thran Keep and passes the Jarl, or supreme leadership, on to Daepar. Andalarn goes off to Moorkai but is soon reported missing. Daepar is forced to make difficult decisions about the fate of House Thran while his thoughts are slowly being clouded by the seductive Anga.
One distinguishing mark of Blalock's Thran Chronicles is that the plot is driven much more by political machinations and intrigue than by the actions of any one character. Eight human Houses, several tribes of Telmet and Kel, Tialsar priests, the ancient Verni, and the Council of Moorkai all struggle for control of an island technically owned by the Emperor of Atlantis. This leads to situations where events and relationships spin out of control- husband is set against wife, son against father, House against House, yet the characters still very much care about each other. The characters are left wondering how their relationships deteriorated, and Blalock has done a good job here of making events happen without seeming to make anything happen.
Unfortunately, sometimes the believability of the work suffers as certain characters' actions seem unreasonable. For instance, when Daepar's wife learns her husband's life could be in danger, she pretends that he is no longer welcome in his home. Yet, when he does return later and they make up, she eventually warms to him and never mentions the threat, although the assassin was never caught. When Andalaran and Kalene change plans on the way to Moorkai, they set off without telling the majority of the people who they know will be worried about them.
All in all The Burning House is a winning choice for those who love a great fantasy. Blalock has used this story to further develop his world, and the full story promises to be a remarkable one. Blalock has promised to put out the six books on an extremely ambitious schedule of one book every six months. I for one will be anxiously awaiting book three, The Tower at Moorkai.

This series just keeps getting more and more intriguing!.......2005-08-04
In this, our fourth book in the THRAN CHRONICLES, we are once again back in Adylonis with our current Thran, Andalarn. Of course, Andalarn is part Kel, so he has a much longer life span than mortal people do. After defeating the Mage in Book Three, Andalarn is once again named Ascendant at Moorkai and makes his home between his rooms there and at House Thran, where he has retained the title of Jarl. Currently at the Thran stronghold, Andalarn receives a visit from an old friend, one who has always been a friend to House Thran, Baliak Kel Mari. It would seem a Traveler has been spotted. The Traveler is an avatar of the Diur. Spotting a Traveler is definitely not a good thing. This means the Diur must be planning on reclaiming Adylonis, something the Kel and Telmet are helpless to fight against.
This isn't the only thing occupying Andalarn's attention. It would appear House Thran's old enemy, House Suum, is once again up to their old tricks and the Jarl is determined to rid Adylonis of House Thran once and for all. Not to mention the odd plague developing.
Will Andalarn be able to defeat House Suum yet again? What of the Traveler? How does he fit into all this? And what of this plague?
HOGURN'S DELL is a wonderful continuation of the THRAN CHRONICLES. H. David Blalock has once again captured my attention with the very first page of this book and held it throughout. The plot in this story just keeps becoming more and more complex, with all kinds of twists and turns and side plots taking place, but never becomes confusing. I really can't wait to see where this author takes us next in this series and how it all will end. I highly recommend this story to anyone looking for a series filled with action, adventure with enough different plots going on to keep your attention!

Wonderful continuation of the series!.......2006-08-05
In this, the fifth book of THE THRAN CHRONICLES, author H. David Blalock has done things a bit differently than in the previous four. Oh, we're still back on Adylonis with all various Houses in power and the Tialsar priests and the Mages at Moorkai, but in this book, we go between dimensions and into different realities. This story deals more with the Kel and the one we have come to know the best, Baliak Kel Mari. When the Kel go into their meditations, they have ability to communicate with their counterparts in other realities due to the Great Seal in the Tower of Moorkai weakening. When Baliak's counterpart from another reality tells him not to let the Thran die, Baliak knows he must do something. Without the Council's approval, Baliak leaves the forest and his clan and makes his way to House Thran, and eventually meets Andalarn. Andalarn has decided he must take the city of Moorkai back from House Suum. When the Kel Saka, another Clan of the Kel, come to aid him, Thran feels it might be possible to win the city back. Of course, the Kel Saka have their own agenda for doing this.
Is the Great Seal weakening further? Will the Diur be released? Will all life as the inhabitants of Adylonis know it cease to exist and everything change? Will Thran be able to win the city of Moorkai?
THE KEL SAKA, the fifth book in THE THRAN CHRONICLES, is a very different type of read. Author H. David Blalock has once managed to hold my attention throughout the story as I read to find out exactly what happens to all the Thrans in the different realities. And while at first, the switching between dimensions may be a bit confusing, it gives more of a total picture of the Diur and the world of Adylonis and the various things threatening it. And yes, the competition between House Suum and House Thran continues in this installment and gives us a better look as to why this threatens the entire island of Adylonis. This is a thrilling, exciting series and I cannot wait to read the conclusion!

A Real Page Turner.......2005-02-09
I will not bore you with details of the plot since other reviewers have already have done an excellent job at that. The big questions are: Is this a good book? Will I like it? What's it's like? Let me try to answer those.
This book is definitely in the genre of a science fiction thriller in the best sense. The action and the plot flows very quickly, very significant events happen that will determine the fate of human colonies, and conspiracies within conspiracies are plotted, revealed, thwarted, and rehatched. The pages do turn very quickly and the plot never stalls.
The only downside is that the characterization is somewhat minimal. The book is plot driven and the characters are interested but they're mostly there as standins for concepts rather than people you might be passionate about. If that doesn't bother you and if you like action oriented, plot driven stories, this is truly a great read.
On another note, there are two sequels to this book, Ash Ock and Paratwa. The two sequels combined to make one story, so if you're going to buy Ash Ock, you should definitely get Paratwa also. Ash Ock ends right in the middle of the action and Paratwa continues right where Ash Ock left off. Will you like the sequels? If you liked Liege-Killer, you'll definitely like Ash Ock and Paratwa. There's more of what makes Liege-Killer a thrilling read - more conspiracies, more revelations, more events that may decide the fate of the human colonies.
I haven't had this much fun reading science fiction for a long while. I highly recommend the entire series.
A very good read.......2003-08-24
STORY: As one editorial review so nicely summariezed: "Two hundred years after Earth is devastated by nuclear war and genetically engineered Paratwa assassins, the humans of orbiting Earth colonies are at peace, until a series of murders reveal the reemergence of the Paratwa."
MY FEEDBACK:
1) SETTING - Prior to the destruction of all life on Earth, humans left for the stars. One group took off into spaceships headed for another solar system. The other group onto the colony capsule that orbits Earth. The later is where the story takes place. The colony capsule is 76 miles long, which is big enough to sustain different regions and groups. I had just come across a real-life group called the Lifeboat Foundation. Thus the setting seemed very plausible and real. It worked well for this story.
2) CHARACTERS - Our group of protagonists are likeable and plausible. Nick is my favorite character, but there is something to admire in each of them. The antagonists as gathered from the story description are a group of genetically created assassins. The Paratwa are very cool and deadly. The characters work well together in this story.
3) STORY - The only reason I gave this story a 4 star (very good read) vs. a 5 star (great read) is because of some of what I felt were long sections of exposition needed in order to explain man's history and how he go to this point in the future. Other than that, the story had plenty of intrigue, action and suspense. The author does give things away by page 122-125 out of 460+ page book. This worked for the most part because as characters came on stage there were two you kept looking for hints at to see which one was the "real" bad guy.
OVERALL: Fun read within a great sci-fi setting. It is not necessary to read the next book as this story resolved 95% of all plotlines. I've read that it the next two books are a bit of a let down anyhow. Nevertheless, get your hands on this book.
One of my favorite sci-fi novels!.......2002-09-24
My friend bought this book for me as a joke because I found the cover art to be amusing. I had read the synopsis on the back of the book, but never seriously thought about reading it until my friend bought it for me. Boy am I glad she did! The book was an genuine page-turner with twists and surprises around every bend. It follows a paratwa - an assassin that is composed of two bodies but one mind - and the paratawa's hunters and victims. In a relatively peaceful existence where everything (including the weather) is controlled by technology, the citizens are literally sheep for the taking as the paratwa reaks havoc. Two paratwa hunters are unfrozen from stasis and sent on the hunt... with technolgoy enabling anybody to alter their identity and the Ash Ock able to fill any position of power, everybody becomes a suspect!
Not only is the book a fascinating and well-crafted story, it brings the eery question to mind of how much technology is too much? And when, not if, will humanity become its own worse enemy?
Good start but the rest of the series dissappoints.......2002-04-19
This opening novel of a space opera sets up an interesting world and is based on an interesting idea. In this world earth is destroyed in a biological and nuculear war and humanity has moved to colonies in orbit. A deadly killer has been released by earths old enemies. Killers that are superhumans enties that have two bodies controled by the same mind.
This book introduces several interesting characters. More importanly the book gets the mood and setting right. The characters move around in style and the story flows well. This book is really a modern dime novel, with the privet eye replaced by a special ops expert.
Unfortuneatly as a trilogy this story fails rather badly. The second and third books do not work nearly as well as the first two. Only the main two characters are kept through all three books and they simply don't stand up the rigor of another seven hundred pages. It is never truly awful the more of this you read the less interesting it is. I can recomend this first novel as a good quick read, but don't feel bad if you don't get around to the sequals.
BEST SCI-FI EVER WRITTEN.......2001-09-16
This is easily my favorite book. The reader is introduced to a new kind of deadly assasain, one who can be in two places at once and kill with ten times the ferocity. My only wish is that a hollywood director reads this book and makes the film. Read this book. Excellent story line. Excellent plot. A joy to read.

Book Description
In all the current alienating discourse on Islam as a source of extremism and fanatic violence this new publication takes a timely and refreshing look at the traditions of Islamic mysticism, philosophy and intellectual debate in a series of diverse and stimulating approaches. It tackles the major figures of Islamic thought as well as shedding light on hitherto unconsidered aspects of Islam utilizing new source material. The contributors are impressive list of scholars and experts.
Book Description
Islam is often described by Orientalists as particularly abstract, ascetic, and uniquely disengaged from the human body. Scott A. Kugle refutes this assertion in the first full study of Islamic mysticism as it relates to the human body. Examining Sufi conceptions of the body in religious writings from the late fifteenth through nineteenth centuries, Kugle demonstrates that literature from this era often treated saints' physical bodies as sites of sacred power.

Review of Sufis and Saints' Bodies.......2007-04-04
This reading as proved very ENLIGHTENING...................and very much down to earth enough to understand easily................
Book Description
From the introduction of Greek philosophy in the eighth century to modern times, this book charts the evolution and interaction of philosophy, theology, and mysticism in the Islamic context.
Book Description
This collection of essays focusing on three domains of Islamic intellectual literature --philosophy, theology, and mysticism emphasizes the beauty of the original theoretical contributions of Islamic thought. Too often, Islamic philosophy is viewed as the product of foreign influences, in contradiction to the factual history of the culture. By embracing a methodology that underplays the role of cultural contexts in the development of ideas in favor of a technical analysis of arguments embedded in the primary texts, the author avoids a reductionalist approach.

Finally!.......2005-03-29
This is a brilliant study of a rich and controversial aspect of Islam and Islamic mysticism. Every course on comparative mysticism, Islamic Studies, and Sufism in society should assign this as a textbook.
Bravo, McGregor!
I was lucky enough to read the book before it "hit the market" and I recommend it very highly indeed.

Someone really ought to tell E.J. Brill about the cost of their books. U$200+ for a one volume translation such as this (even if it is the Shaykh al-Akbar) is ridiculous, given that one can obtain the original Arabic text of Ibn `Arabi's _Kitab Anqa Mughrib_ at any decent book seller in Cairo or Damascus for less than U$15.
epochal translation original interpretation of ibn al-ýArabi.......1999-09-06
This is a epochal translation and original interpretation of ibn al-'Arabi's view of himself in relation to Mohammedian Sainthood as he re-conceived it. Like many mystics of genius Muhyi-l-Din ibn al-'Arabi found quite early in his career that his position in the hierarchy of mystics and minor prophets had a unique significance for the symbolic development of Islam, that would deepen and completely redefine the most exalted reaches of Islamic anthropology, philosophy of religion and mysticism. In many ways the west and the east is still in its infancy in approaching the towering edifice of this Saint's encyclopedic reworking of Islam, a reworking that may still proffer unique insights to any future philosophy of religion. In fact it is only with the advent of philosophical hermeneutics and the recent turn of philosophy toward religious studies as suggested by de Vries (PHILOSOPHY AND THE TURN TO RELIGION by Hent de Vries $24.95, paperback, 473 pages, Johns Hopkins University Press, ISBN: 0801859956) that the preliminary tools and attitudes are now possible in the academic discourse study of ibn al-'Arabi's rich and difficult texts. The rigor of interpretation need to approach ibn al-'Arabi's massive literary output is well understood by western scholars who study him. His writings are full of detailed learning specific to his time and high culture, full of allusions unique to the Sufi milieu. William Chittick's works have contributed to a fuller understanding of this thinker who was all but ignored and hardly known in the West just two generations ago. In many ways ibn al-'Arabi offers a unique picture of the inner workings of a mystic because his writings have a autobiographical element to them that most mystical writings from the medieval period do not. Elmore's study is the first concerted effort to deal in-depth with the meaning of ibn al-'Arabi's Andalusian writings, the writings he produced before his hajj and life in Africa and Asia where his major works were composed. One of the more controversial of Elmore's contributions his reworking of the Saint's early life and his self-conceptions of his mystical station as "Mohammedian Seal of the Saints." This topic has concerned many Western excursions into the intricate labyrinth of his thinking. If we understand how ibn al-'Arabi thought of himself and what the scope of his project was then we have a practical key to the enormous reworking of universal Islam, an esoteric vision that few Sufi schools have ever matched or grasped without seriously falling in sectarian and ideological simplifications of ibn al-'Arabi's thought. The current dean of Akbarian studies Michel Chodkiewicz. exemplifies this approach in SEAL OF THE SAINTS: Prophethood and Sainthood in the Doctrine of Ibn `Arabi. Elmore's study and translation provides a much more focused approach to the Saint's self-definition and the origins of his anthropology. One could say the Elmore's study is laying the groundwork for an historical critical approach to ibn al-'Arabi that attempts to provide a broader cultural as well as biographical context as background to understanding the saints work as a whole. More specifically Elmore offers a plethora of minutia in his notes that should advance Akbarian studies in many small but substantial ways well beyond the competence of this reviewer to consider. So far we have addressed only a few of the central features of Elmore's 226 page introduction. The major value of this work is in its significant translation of the Book of the Fabulous Gryphon (Kitab `Anqa' Mughrib). Elmore provides this poetic and theosophical work with a clear translation and plenty of guidance in notes and commentary to provide future considerations of the saint's hierarchy of sainthood much serious attentiveness to continuities and variations in ibn al-'Arabi thought. All in all this is a major work of scholarship that any serious student of ibn al-'Arabi's theosophy cannot afford to ignore.
"Ibn Al-Arabi" industry.......1999-06-18
This book is way too expensive. I am glad Ibn Al-Arabi's writings is making some people rich. The poor guy and his writings are turning into an industry. How about creating a site "Arabi.com"and make money selling stocks.
