Kate Jennings's first novel, Snake, was praised for combining "dry comedy" and "genuine heartbreak"; now she has used the same sweet-and-sour recipe in her second book, Moral Hazard--but with even more raw ingredients. The heroine is thirtysomething Cath, a smiling, punning, do-gooding bien pensant who has somehow ended up in the vicious purlieus of Wall Street, dealing billions with the great white sharks of high finance. This unfeasibly high-powered employ contrasts sharply with Cath's home life. She's married to a man 25 years her senior: "sweet Bailey, dearest Bailey... optimistic where I was pessimistic, enthusiastic where I was distrustful." This marriage is not perfect: as Cath mordantly observes, "marriage is awful in its nearness. Yoked together, bound, in a three-legged race with no finishing line." Nevertheless Cath and Bailey, in their May/December way, have found a kind of happiness. Then, horribly, Bailey is diagnosed with Alzheimer's....
Three chapters in we learn this terrible truth, and the rest of the book concerns Cath's desperate, affecting, sardonic, resolute ways and means of dealing with Bailey's rollercoaster ride to the inevitable--or even worse. It's not an easy journey; this is not the easiest of books. What largely rescues the whole from being a whiny or self-pitying lament is the prose: humorous, energetic, sharp, urbane, and vivid. --Sean Thomas, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
On Wall Street, reflects Cath, women are about as welcome as fleas in a sleeping bag. Funny, liberal and left-leaning, she is an unlikely candidate to be writing speeches on derivatives in a Manhattan tower, 'putting words in the mouths of plutocrats deeply suspicious of metaphors and words of more than two syllables'. She finds herself on Wall Street because she needs serious money. After ten good years, her beloved older husband Bailey is suffering from Alzheimer's.So begins Cath's journey into two nightmare worlds. By day she deals with the topsy-turvy logic and ingrown personalities at work in high finance; by night she has to watch the slow disintegration of the man she loves. In between, she must stop herself from falling apart. As the money markets hurtle towards financial meltdown, Cath faces personal disaster and a moral hazard that she cannot ignore.Kate Jennings' prose is lean yet rich in unexpected, telling detail. Tense, taut and compulsively readable, Moral Hazard is peopled by extraordinary characters and informed by a mordant, witty intelligence.

IN THE BELLY OF THE BEAST.......2003-11-18
Cath is a 40ish woman who was once a freelance writer who has been forced into becoming a speechwriter for big business in early 1990s New York. Her husband, who is 20 years older than her, has been stricken with Alzheimer's, and she is in dire need of money to cover the expenses of his care. Some of her connections get her a job with Niedecker Bereche, an investment bank. When she gets to her new job she thinks "I was in the belly of the beast:observe, listen, learn." You see, her problem is that she is a feminist liberal idealist, so she is out of her element in the cutthroat world of high finance. She soon finds that a lot of what goes on at her work are scams and schemes much like those that brought down Enron. She does manage to find an ally to stem the tide of corruption from infecting her. Mike, a coworker, is also aware of the dangers of capitalism run amok and plans to take down the company from the inside out. The problem is that after working there for a while, Cath has perhaps changed her mind about the evils she once perceived.
Moral Hazard by Kate Jennings is an excellent work. It was critical of big business behavior without sacrificing story or preaching. It also retains a human element in the scenes with Cath and her stricken husband as he gradually deteriorates into a man she no longer knows. The satire in it is also humorous. It explodes the myth that Wall Street bankers know what they are doing and reveals them as paranoid, helpless, and corrupt investors who blow with the wind of rumors. I think we have already seen in real life what happens when markets are left to regulate themselves. This book is a great short read.
MORAL HAZARD blinks yellow warning lights!.......2002-10-02
MORAL HAZARD
Read this book. Even by the second chapter, you'll understand you are entering a world that is mad as a hatter, only that the diagnosed alzheimer patient (the author's husband) is way more lucid than the bulls (the author's bosses) who ram Wall Street down our economic throats. Moral Hazard blinks yellow warning lights even when the words slice into neat little pats of cold butter on warm toast at breakfast. This makes the story edible in deceptively gentle prose. What seems like a peculiar combination of subjects is - dementia on Wall Street countered by a beloved husband's alzheimers' trials and indignities. Somehow the two stories fit hand in glove and come out swinging the reader into black-eyed shame for our dual neglect of an aging population, and withering pension funds ground into dust by tassle-shoed Big Toes. There's more, but then, that would be telling. Read Moral Hazard for yourself. I did. Twice.
very disappointed.......2002-08-11
editorial and customer reviews on this very small book are gushing so we bought it. poor style, story not very interesting,
nothing comes alive. but the author obviously knows how to pick her subjects: alzheimer and the stock-market: you can not get more topical! all in all just a college 101 essay.
A Witty Woman Languishes Among Rapacious Madmen.......2002-07-18
This fine novella, a mere 50,000 words or so of taut invective against the greed of aspiring Wall Street shakers, is written in the style of an autobiographical essay, a winning strategy as Jennings juxtaposes the anguish of caring for her husband, suffering from Alzheimer's-driven dementia, with the novel's even more virulent dementia, the craziness and moral grotesqueness of all the avaricious, ego-piggish colleagues the narrator, Cath, must contend with day in and day out as she works as a corporate speech writer. The narrator's voice is sharp, pungent, and never sentimental as she describes her alienation at work and her despair at witnessing her older husband, twenty-five years her senior, disintegrate at the hands of Alzheimer's Disease.
UNIQUE, MOVING AND INCISIVE.......2002-06-10
Concise and clear-eyed, forthright and fearless all aptly describe the lucid prose of Australian writer Kate Jennings whose first novel, Snake, was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. She possesses a gift for taut imagery: "The house of illness is papered with euphemisms." Or, "...his promises exited his mind backward, like tottering geishas."
With "Moral Hazard" Ms. Jennings offers, if you will, a morality/mortality tale in which the madness of the world of high finance (appropriate considering Enron) and the delusional states of Alzheimer's disease stand cheek by jowl, emphasizing the similarities.
Cath, a freelance writer in her forties, is happily married to Bailey, a creative soul in his mid sixties. "He was always doing, always curious," she says. "He surrounded me with warmth." When he is diagnosed as being in the early stages of Alzheimer's it becomes quickly apparent that she cannot provide the care he will need on their current income.
Therefore she finds work at Niedecker on Wall Street although she is "an unlikely candidate for the job of executive speechwriter, to be putting words in the mouths of plutocrats deeply suspicious of metaphors and words of more than two syllables."
Cath's guide through the miasma of high finance and cutthroat office maneuvering is Mike, a caustic, voluble risk manager. The two became friends on the day of Nixon's funeral, which was declared a holiday on Wall Street. Mike's tutelage proves invaluable, as he advises her to stop bucking the firm lest she be broken. "Round off your sharp edges," he counsels, "Turn yourself into an anthropologist."
At home she faces the inevitability of Bailey's decline. Initially anti-psychotic medicine is prescribed. Then, after consulting a line up of professionals Cath determines that Bailey must be relegated to a nursing home. He, of course, cries, weeps, "recoiling in horror,,,,,beyond comfort" when he is left in "...a place where behavior was infantile, instincts animal. A place of last things."
In due time, while he never makes peace with his surroundings, Bailey does make a friend in the home. She is Dolly, another Alzheimer's patient with a penchant for brilliant colors and black patent leather shoes. When confined to a wheelchair, Bailey finds a second friend in Gwen, a Jamaican private aid hired by Cath. An intuitive caregiver, Gwen lavishes him with affection and treats him with respect.
"Moral Hazard" is a unique story, both moving and incisive as it explores the worlds of trade and sickness with insight, compassion, and humor. A former senior speechwriter at an investment bank, Ms. Jennings well knows of what she writes, and she does it with incomparable precision...

Corona is amazing!.......2007-01-10
This book was amazing and my first Salvatore book I have ever read. I really enjoyed the seriousness of the spiritual battles and physical battles mingled with the wonderful timly humor that Salvatore's characters delivered.
One of the neatest graphical scenes for me was the demon posession towards the begininng of the book, it was so intensely vivid that it was frightfully scary, as if you were right there and that your body could be sought next! YIKES!
Like I said before what I liked about this book was the perfect blend between down right awesome seriousness and positively humours at the same time..Very hard thing to accomplish.
This book definetly will draw you into this wonderful world of Corona!

Classic Sci-Fi Thriller .......2006-11-22
R. A. Salvatore creates another science fiction classic in his release of The Demon Awakens. Elbryan Wyndon's hometown of Dundalis is destroyed by a raid of goblins and fomorian giants. He believes he is the only survivor, and is taken in by elves for physical and mental training to become the next ranger, and protect the people in of the area. Little does he know that his love, Jilseponie, had also survived the raid and made a new life with the Coastpoint Guards, despite her memory loss of her childhood. Their paths cross along with Avelyn, a monk from the Abellican church who is trained in the use of the sacred gems; Bradwarden, a powerful centaur that resides in the forest near Dundalis; and the trapper crew of Paulson, Chipmunk, and Cric. Together they set out to confront the dactyl, the evil demon that has brought together the goblins, giants, and the bloodthirsty powries to form an unstoppable army that threatens the peace of the world. This is a great read for anybody, I like how there are many main characters developed and the action of the story is amazing. Science Fiction fans will love this book especially.
This is a difficult book to rate.......2006-11-07
If you have read the Dark Elf Trilogy, then you know what to expect. Although I daresay that this series is better the Drizzt books for the simple reason that Drizzt is never going to be killed in battle, regardless of how many people or even gods he faces. So Drizzt is never in real jeopardy so has become uninteresting. In this series no character is truly safe, and no character is kept around after they are no longer useful to the story.
My first reaction was thinking that Mr. Salvatore plagiarized himself. Take the best points of Elbryan and Avelyn and you have Drizzt. Bradwarden is Wulfgar and Pony is Cattie Bri, even one of her nicknames is a nod to it. The similar training sequences and moralizing are here was well.
Unlike the other fantasy writer named Robert, this Robert can cover a lot of ground quickly, with enough details to get a very good idea of the last few weeks, months or even years. Salvatore trusts and encourages our imagination.
I liked his take on centaurs, and especially liked the magic system. It is very unique, which is a rarity in the fantasy genre. The elves are somewhat standard(very aloof), but are interesting enough. The church is what you would expect from a group of people filled with the stink of piety and power.
So why 4 stars instead of 1 or 2? Simple: it is a very interesting story that keeps you engaged and never gets bogged down in unimportant details. Unlike other series that go past 3 books, this series stays engaging from beginning to end. Well worth getting into.
The Demon Awakens.......2006-07-27
At first glance readers may compare the first book of Demon Wars to The Wheel of Time. However, The Demon Awakens is much better. Salvatore spins the tail of Elbryan and his amazing friends beautifully. Fans will love this. There are so many twists and turns that readers simply won't be able to put this book down.
Started strong then falls off.......2006-01-26
I love Salvatore and hate to sound negative but I have a bad taste in my mouth after reading this trilogy. I won't bother reviewing the next two b/c this unfortunitly is the best of the three.
The first third I couldn't put down. I loved it, it was becoming my favorite fantasy novel of all time. The three seperate parts of each protaganist training and growing and living was awesome. But when the three of them got together it just fell apart.
After Avelyn sacrifices himself, Salvatore gets stuck on that the rest of the trilogy. He comes back to it over and over again. Get over it. I don't care anymore, move on to something else.
And what is with Elbryan having feelings about killing another man? What is with Salvatore's moral compass becoming so large in his work now? What happened with him? Was he born again? It is starting to creep into Drizzt as well and it upsets me. Is this a fantasy novel or a morality play? I want the former. Go smash something with your sword and kill it. Don't stand there and feel bad, get off your high horse Robert and get back to writing what you are good at!

Gardner Dickinson has always been very laid-back. That's why it doesn't really bother him that while his friends and sister seem to have long-term goals, he just moseys through life browsing through books and trying out weights, without ever finishing a novel or beginning an exercise program. Then, his dad gets laid off and can't seem to motivate himself to find another job. As he watches his father putter aimlessly in the garage day after day, Gardner begins to suspect that his inability to concentrate may be hereditary. And during a serious heart-to-heart talk about the state of their family, older sister Lacey confirms it: "You and Dad both have a problem in the focusing and following-through departments... you come up with a new delusion every week but you don't act on a single one." Gardner wants to prove Lacey wrong, so he takes up running, forcing himself to stick with it even when he wants to quit. But while Gardner is learning discipline, his dad seems to be slipping further and further into a deep depression. Can Gardner convince his father that it's not too late to change his ways before their family drifts apart from lack of focus?
Randy Powell has written a subtle, smart novel that sincerely portrays two of the most difficult hurdles of adolescence: the search for meaning in one's life and the dawning realization that parents are people, too. A thoughtful addition to Powell's collection of teen-boy-angst novels, the most recent being Tribute to Another Dead Rock Star. (Ages 13 and older) --Jennifer Hubert
Book Description
A teenager's-eye view of parental desperation
What do you do when your dad has a midlife crisis? This is the dilemma of fourteen-year-old Gardner, whose father's been laid off and is now expressing boredom with his life, and even talking to Gardner about leaving the family. Gardner has all along thought he'd like to grow up to emulate his father, whom he has idolized since childhood. But, with this disappointment and possible betrayal haunting his family, Gardner isn't so sure anymore. Eventually, through old and new friendships and a dedicated endeavor to become physically strong, Gardner finds the emotional strength and identity to survive whatever upset may be in store for him and his family's future. In scenes both comical and heartbreaking, Randy Powell demonstrates once more that he is one of the foremost contemporary writers for young adults.
Customer Reviews:
RUN if You Dare.......2006-10-23
RUN if You Dare by Randy Powell is a really great book if you like realistic fiction. I think this was a great realistic fiction and encourage you to read it, but I don't like realistic fiction so that is why I gave it three stars. This book is about a young fifteen year old boy named Gardner, whose family has been having problems lately. His dad his been out of work so his mom is coming back late and stressed out. His sister thinks Gardner is going to end up like his father trying different jobs and getting fired. Gardner is mad at his father because he keeps playing golf in isn't doing anything in his life. He learned a lot from his father of what not do. Gardner doesn't want to tell his father what he is doing wrong but he just wishes he would help out instead of playing golf. He wishes his friends can add some spunk in his life especially a really good friend named Annie. Then abruptly something happened that changed his life.
disappointment.......2005-10-27
As i read the preview for this book i was excited by it and i thought it would be a good book. After I was done reading it i realized there was no plot to it and no plot. I also thought Randy Powell needed to make realistic characters.
Kinda....Gay!.......2003-07-24
Wow, this was an awful book! When I finished this book I was extremely disappointed.
This book was crazy random. Like...Gardner states he's extremely lazy and never commits to anything in the beginning of this story, but all of a sudden he has this urge to run and work out? Ok, that would be fine if it leaded to anything but it doesn't. He does eventually try out for track because of his running but he doesn't even LIKE it. He's just training and working out for absolutely nothing even at the end of the book. His fathers reasons for mid-life crisis are stupid and extremely unrealistic. "..When I was a boy I always wanted to run away. God, I didn't want to tell you, but and I have to do that, Gardner! I could go south to mexico or something." And leave and abandon his family? Please. Give me a break.
Powell also drops little sex information here and there that have no point or purpose, and the little romance that is supposed to draw us in a bit, turns out to not go anywhere. Ever.
Skeepo doesn't even act like a real friend should, and for the life of me, I haven't figured out what in the worlds Gardner's sister's malfunction is. She seems anti-family all the way through, but the Powell never takes a moment to explain why.
I admit, that this book's wit does make you smirk every so often, but those times are few and far between. This books a train wreck. Please don't read it. You could use all that wasted time sleeping or something.
Not as compelling as Powell's previous books.......2001-05-16
I found it difficult to believe that high school students would be interested in this story, which seems to focus more on Gardner Dickinson's father's mid-life crisis than on the teenager and his struggle to deal with the problems this causes for his family. Although there are some elements that usually draw teen readers in--such as the hint of romance, and Gardner's increasing interest in running--the story didn't suck me in or keep me interested. It was sort of a depressing look at parental unemployment and mid-life ennui, without any analysis of the effect that has on individual teens. I won't reveal the ending, but I will comment that it seemed unlikely that a high school student would make the choice Gardner did.

It was far too often that I have been forced to look to scriptures and commentaries of other faiths to find spiritual works of both faith and imagination. like his fellow Scotsman George MacDonald, and also C.S. Lewis, Peter Marshall is among the rare exceptions. Not that I have any problem with authors, scriptures, and artists of other faith traditions, its just a rare find in Christian writers on the Gospel. It takes imagination to take a thousands year old text, and breath life into it to make real, relevant and alive for a totally new time and place, but all three of these authors, MacDonald, Lewis, and Marshall do it beautifully. Perhaps those of the Orient and Middle east are usually better at seeing scripture and religion through the prism of the artist's imagination because their cultures are often less focused on the printed word as an end in itslef, and more involved in spoken word, storytelling, and the poetic imagination, at least with regards to religious texts. Whatever the reasons, this scarcity in the Christian tradition makes a collection like this all the more rewarding. I won't try and describe the way Marshall imagines what it would be like to walk with Christ, to live as a disciple of a living Christ. I wouldn't do it justice. Enough to say I suppose, that this book is a rare treasure for any seeker of spiritual sustainance of any faith. Have the courage to imagine that Jesus is real, that the gospel is indeed truth and feel yourself swept away in a torrent of faith. Words of wisdom from one of the spiritual masters of our times. Like all spiritual masterworks, these sermons are an important resource for all mankind, regardless of faith. People forget that Mohammed spoke with reverence of the Hebrew prophets, just as Christ did. Mohammed also spoke of Christ and his Mother. Imagine how many islamist extremists and fundamentalists don't even consider this simple truth. Even Guru Nanak is part of a long tradition of prophets who spoke of unity of Islam and Hinduim, and yet Sikhs started a third religion in his name! But I digress, if you find what I'm saying blasphemous, don't worry, these are my own reflections not those of mr Marshall. My point is this only: If you are a non Christian, and you want to understand the spirit of Christ or learn from his teachings, besides going to the gospel itself, at least read someone who believes Christ, and who has the courage to imagine that his is not just and institution or a collections of ideas, but a living reality -now as ever. Don't forget to check out George MacDonald (try "Life Essential" to start) and of course C.S. Lewis.
Boring? Hah!!!!!!!!!.......1999-02-01
In 'Mr. Jones meet the Master', you are allowed the privelege of reading just a few of Dr. Marshall's sermons. Being only sixteen, I have not found many friends my age ready to read this book, and that is awful. When most people (Especially teenagers) hear that you're reading 'a book of sermons', they think 'boring!' Not so with this book. Last summer, I decided to read 'Mr. Jones, meet the Master', and I literally could not put it down. Dr. Marshall has a captivating writing style that keeps you reading and keeps you thinking. I really love the way he pricks your conscience and lays it on the line. I really got things right with God after reading 'Mr. Jones, Meet the Master'. If you're looking for something to boost your Christian walk, please, READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can safely promise you won't be dissapointed. I have recommended this book to everyone I know, and now I recommend it to you! And if you enjoy this book, I also recommend 'A man called Peter', which is the biography of Peter Marshall. Though he went home to the 'Chief' years before I was born, I can't wait to meet him in Heaven! Beg, borrow, or buy a copy of this book TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This book will touch your Soul, Heart, Mind, and Life!.......1998-11-10
A book to be kept near during your life. Dynamic presentations of thoughts brought out by stories of our everyday lives. If you feel removed from The Lord, this book will point the way, and give you a very gentle push in that direction. I truly regret the fact Peter Marshall left to be with the "Chief" so early in his life. I wish I could have heard him preach, and meet him.
I am planning on buying five additional copies for my children to keep in their homes.
Thank you Rev. and Mrs. Marshall
First Rate and Thoughtful!.......1998-09-22
This collection of Peter Marshall's sermons is thought provoking and deepening for those who would grow in their Christian faith! I found the sermon labeled "By Invitation of Jesus" to be excellent. This is not a dry series of discourses, but a living breathing set of gems! Highly recommended.
