Thomas Mistler is rich and distinguished, has a lovely, competent wife, and has more or less made it over the hump with his adult son. He is also dying. At the outset of Mistler's Exit, he is told by his doctor that the spot on his liver is indeed "the crab inside." Unexpectedly, Mistler greets this news with a kind of joy. Instead of wallowing in grief and the strange, protracted hope offered by medicine, he refuses all treatment, and is determined to accept his fate. But before he tells his family, Mistler decides to make a short escape to Venice. The "lingering taste of sweet," he hopes, will help him through the months ahead.
In Venice he wanders around like a man already dead, pondering his past and the few threads of future left to him: "It was the one place on earth where nothing bothered him.... His conscience need not nag if he failed to look at this or that essential painting or monument. Vedi Napoli e mori!. It wasn't as though you could capture a masterpiece on your retina and thereby turn it into a funerary object to accompany you, like a pharaoh, to the grave." There is also a last-ditch encounter with eros. A lovely young photographer, the consort of one of his society friends, has followed him to Venice, intent on an affair. This Mistler undertakes with detachment and annoyance, disliking what this young woman reveals to him.
As he did in his last novel, About Schmidt, Louis Begley presents us with a character who is not eminently likeable--who is, in fact, so insulated by privilege as to be almost distasteful. But slowly, subtly, the author elicits the reader's sympathy. For this we can thank the elegance and sobriety of his prose, along with its moments of true flight: "Preposterously, unmistakably, he began to rejoice. The horizon would no longer recede. Six Months to Live.......2005-02-15
Thomas Mistler, a very successful (but not especially ethical) CEO, learns he has terminal cancer. To cope, he takes a solitary trip to Venice, where his goal is to explore his past and to adjust to his six-months-to-live medical status.
On the plus side, Begley shows how Mistler uses the art and locale of Venice, as well as the people he meets, to come to terms with his life and familial regrets, as well as the world of achievements and missed opportunities he will leave behind. From this perspective, the book describes an intriguing, albeit depressing, vacation. This is the story of a man tying together loose ends.
On the other hand, I read this book as a comment ONLY on the life of Thomas Mistler who, to use Tom Wolfe's term, is a master of the universe. For me, its revelations and resolutions made sense for Mistler. But universality is absent.
A good book for Louis Begley fans.

Contemplating A Death in Venice........2004-09-08
Thomas Mistler, the founder and CEO of a world-renowned, New York advertising agency, is not a very likable person. A self-indulgent WASP who enjoys the high life, he is accustomed to getting his own way both in business and in his personal life. Married to an "appropriate," pedigreed wife, with whom he has an appropropriate, conventional home life, he also pursues other women attracted to his "glitz." Suddenly, Mistler discovers that he has liver cancer, too far advanced to make treatment a viable option without interfering with the quality of his remaining days.
With remarkable sang-froid, Mistler decides not to tell his family, feigning a business trip to Europe so that he can have a week by himself in Venice to prepare for the inevitable. To his surprise, he discovers a young woman in his hotel room, a photographer he has just met at a dinner party who is attracted to him but also wants to work for his agency. With Lena he revisits many of his favorite places, and indulges in sensual pleasures, fine wines, and foods before his insensitivity drives her away.
Alone, Mistler explores his past and contemplates his relationships with his father, his father's mistress (Tante Elizabeth, whom he adores), his wife and son (who has escaped to the West Coast to become a writer), friends from school, and ultimately, "the girl who got away," a Radcliffe classmate when he was at Harvard, who is now living in Venice. Unsentimental, Mistler makes no excuses for what he gradually begins to see as his faults. While he knows he will not change, at this point, he also knows, as an advertising man, that he has the power to affect how he himself may be viewed in the future if he acts appropriately now.
The Venice setting is perfect for this book about a man contemplating death. The canals are polluted and devoid of life, and the city itself survives only through an enormous effort to hold back the sea. Resembling Hades and its series of rivers, Venice also features gondoliers in black boats who resemble Charon, the old man who ferries the dead across the River Styx to Hades, and when Mistler buys a black wherry from a boatman, all the imagery comes together. Though the main character may not be someone with whom the reader will identify, his behavior and actions are consistent with his personality. Author Begley conveys Mistler's formality and his inner feelings in elegant language, completely appropriate for Mistler, and his insights into life's big questions are thoughtful. Mary Whipple

I enjoy reading Louis Begley, but I do get a bit tired of his all conquering male sex gods. Why do women fall for these over-the-hill guys? Don't know.
The writing is excellent and insightful, however, so well worth reading. If only I understood the last sentence I might know if Mistler's Exit was to be a good one or not.
Life after the "final verdict".......2000-06-02
After reading "All about Schmidt" I was attracted to read another book by Louis Begley. This has to be a recommendation of the author. He must be doing something right to qualify for more hours of my discretionary time. Perhaps I was attracted by his grammatical English, which is sadly becoming rarer with an almost universal expectation of little more than bare communication on the lowest level. His legal background is evident in a few periodic sentences of tedious length. There are few and they give way to a simple and wonderfully direct prose for human reaction and emotion. If you were given a finite life expectancy, how would you react? This is the stuff of TV human interest programs. What does our legally trained author offer beyond the banal? Firstly, this is a truly positive book. Nothing morbid here. It is a litany of human passion, self-indulgence and self-gratification. And why not, if you have only a few months to live. The message is Horace's old maxim "carpe diem." Live life. Don't wait. Our hero, Thomas Mistler, in fact had to wait till he had a terminal report from his doctor. But his unexpected reaction is one of freedom from what had restricted his inner-most emotions before knowing that life was not to continue in its bourgeois continuum apparently foreever. So the reader is part of his late emotional and sexual emancipation. He enjoys what many secretly dream of without the burden of middle class values and narrow religious scruple.
Don't read this if you are concerned with the thoughts of an older man who is still sexually alive and well. Don't read it if you are bound by the rules of middle class restrictions of the "apropriate," whatever that may be.
This should be compulsory reading for those with a serious, or life-threatening condition. Forget the gloom. Just for once, let your real feelings come to the fore.
Not to forget Louis Begley's wonderfully succinct and irnonic style, let me assure you that this is a book for those who appreciate irony and grit. Older readers might even find it educational!

Don't bother, unless you loved the first two books........2005-09-03
I have been reading Chris Bunch books since the start of the Sten series in 1982. I would give most of his older novels 4 stars. I was reluctant to buy "Dragonmaster" after reading Chris Bunch's mediocre Star Risk, Ltd. novels. The third book in that series, "The Doublecross Program," is Chris Bunch's poorest novel.
I decided to buy the Storm of Wings Trilogy (now renamed as the Dragonmaster series) after reading many favorable reader reviews. Unfortunately, I do not agree with most reviewers and give the books only three stars. The main theme of the first two books (the development of dragons as weapons of war similar to what happened with biplanes and triplanes in World War I) is interesting, but the pacing is erratic, many of the key characters are boring, and the moral questions (mostly about 'progressing' towards "total war") seem forced. The inclusion of magic just muddles the stories, especially since the magicians are unimpressive.
The first book is the best of the three. Reading the second book is necessary to finish the story. The third book is optional (the war ended in the second book), but it should not be read without reading the previous two. This third (and presumably final) book deals with the aftermath of war: what happens to the warriors and their dragon steeds? In this case, as the title implies, they look for another battle (or two, or three, or four...).
A fitting ending.......2005-06-06
The first book, Storm of Wings, began with a typical boy-runs-away-from-home-turned-adventurer, except that the boy did not get apprenticed to powerful wizards nor warriors but learned to ride a dragon before getting conscripted into the war. He had enough sense and survived the war to become a veteran. After his unit got wiped out, the second part of the book began with heavy resemblance to WE Johns Biggles stories in the World War One when (military) aviation was in its infancy.
In fact, the whole development of the war and the stalemates were lifted almost directly from the events of World War One with disastrous results in attempts of breakthrough. Those familiar with the Great War could identify Somme as well as Gallipoli.
The second book Knighthood of the Dragon continued the war between Dermaine (Britain) and Sagene (France) on one side, and Roche (Germany) on the other. Here, the author adapted an episode from World War Two - The Great Escape. Eventually, Hal Kailas's side managed to break through and take the war into the lands of the Roche, despite it being slow going. The change of the nature of warfare in real world history to include destruction of civilian properties in order to starve the enemy into submission was also reflected. Hal Kailas ended the war as a hero and a lord.
The final book - The Last Battle, began with the end of the war. Veteran Hal Kailas who found himself enriched and ennobled found frustrations as he could not find a new meaning in his life - leading to the estrangement with his wife. He finally sought to do something - to repay the dragons for their contributions to the war, by finding out what caused the dragons to flee from their original unknown homelands across the Great Sea.
In this series, dragons were depicted as little more than aerial steeds adapted for war, with hardly more than animal intelligence. The dragons did not speak, breath fire nor cast magic. In fact, mankind had little fear of them, finding them nuisance to animal husbandry and even bully their youngs. The dragons did not have sufficient intelligence to recognise their innate advantages.
Hal put together an expedition to sail to find the mysterious original homeland of the dragons.
SPOILERS follows!
After some adventures, Hal discovered the dragons were fleeing demons. This could be taken directly from the movie Evolution, whereby an alien entity (the demon) entered the world, and began multiplying itself, taking the forms of the mightiest creature it encountered, through a series of speedy evolution.
While there was nothing really original in the series, the author's attention to details and ability to answer questions in the readers' mind through his narration was to be commended.
The author indeed convinced us that the "heroes" in the book knew what they were doing instead of being small-minded characters.

Use Amazon.com's "look inside this book" feature to view the back cover of Backcountry Bear Basics, and you'll see that Steve French, Director of Research for the Yellowstone Grizzly Foundation, says Backcountry Bear Basics is "the number one book I'd recommend to anyone going into bear country." Alaska Department of Fish & Game biologist Larry Aumiller, manager of the McNeil River State Sanctuary for Brown Bears, writes that Backcountry Bear Basics is "entertaining and accurate."
I'm not aware of any other bear safety book, including Ph.D. biologist Stephen Herrero's Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance, that features endorsements from genuine bear experts.
"Living in Harmony With Bears," a publication by the Alaska Office of the National Audubon Society, includes a Suggested Reading list that mentions both Backcountry Bear Basics and Herrero's Bear Attacks. Bear Basics: Entertaining and educational.......2004-08-20
Dave Smith is an excellent writer! His style of writing is educational, yet entertaining. He is down to earth, yet takes his research quite seriously. He does an excellent job of discussing issues that a number of guides stress or disagree with, such as noise making, bear cans, menstration and camping, and bear spray. His discussion on biology and evolution of the grizzly and black bear is for the individual who wants to gain an understanding of bears, yet does not want to know the technical facts that only a specialist would want to know.
An excellent read for those who are interested in learning about bears, their behavior, and how to minimize and avoid attacks. Short, sweet, and entertaining!
Backcountry Bear Basics.......2004-03-17
I reckon I won't be encountering any bears in my neck of the city anytime soon, but I thought I give this book a read anyway. Well-written, concise and informatives, this book seems to give you all that you need to know. It debunks certain myths such as bears being attracted to menustrating females and the usefulness of climbing a tree (if you can make it there) to avoid an irrate bear. So if you are heading out into bear country and are not an experienced hiker, reading this book would be a good idea.
Women, Menstruation, Bears.......2003-05-10
Under the heading "Feminine Hygiene and Bears," Glacier National Park's current website claims, "although evidence is inconclusive, sexual actitivity or a woman's menstrual period may attract bears." Women who are concerned about warnings like this should read Backcountry Bear Basics. Instead of repeating or embellishing Glacier Park's menstrual warning (as far too many writers have done over the years), Smith reviewed the evidence and found it wanting. He devotes eleven meticulously documented pages of Backcountry Bear Basics to the menstrual myth. After a graduate student did a study on polar bears and menstrual odors in 1980, the superintendent of Glacier wrote a memo that said the results of the study "were inconclusive and the applicability of the thesis to Glacier's grizzly and black bears is questionable." So why does Glacier continue to post menstrual warnings? Smith says park officials are "in a quandry. Because of 'liability implications,' NPS officials felt they had to warn park visitors that it might be dangerous for menstruating women to travel in bear country. At the same time, the NPS had to tell employees that it was safe for menstruating women to work in bear country. It was clear there would be lawsuits for sexual discrimination if the NPS refused to hire women for jobs in bear country." Whether the topic is menstruation, food storage, or pepper spray, Dave Smith really did his homework. You get practical advice in this book that you won't find anywhere else.
Enlightening, pragmatic, fun to read.......2003-04-18
This daring book challenges conventional wisdom about bears, it's well-documented, it provides safety tips you won't find anywhere else, and it's written with style. Reading Bear Basics is like sitting around the campfire and chatting about bears with a witty outdoorsman who has years of first hand experience with bears, and an encyclopedic knowledge of bear literature.
You casually mention that bears eat anything and everything; John Muir wrote that to bears, everything is food except granite. "John Muir was wrong," says author Dave Smith. "When it comes to natural foods, bears are rather finicky. Out of 1,000 types of plants in a given area, they might only consume 100-250, and each of those will be eaten during a particular season." To reduce the risk of encounting a bear, Smith suggests contacting land management agencies before you take a hike: "Resource management experts can often predict when and where to expect bear because the bruins are so keyed in on seasonal food sources."
X-C skiers generally don't give much thought to bears during the winter, but Smith says, "When I worked as a winterkeeper in Yellowstone, I often saw my first grizzly tracks in March. During the unusually mild winter of 1995-96, winterkeeper Steve Fuller saw grizzly tracks in February. No matter where you're going, you should be aware of bear hibernation patterns.
You ask if bears have good vison or poor vision, and Smith replies, "A 1937 report from Europe noted that brown bears in a zoo could see people at 120 yards, and recognize their handler at 60 yards." He then relates an anecdote by a bear researcher in Colorado who was spotted by a black bear from a distance of 800 yards. He closes by noting that Yellowstone Grizzly Foundation research director Steve French has an "excellent rule of thumb regarding the vison of bears: if you can see a bear, you should assume the bear can see you."
Backcountry Bear Basics is filled with useful information like this. Now if I see a grizzly 150 yards away, I'll assume the bear can see me and I won't move around unless the bear is preoccupied. Although many books discuss bear vision and other topics that are covered in Bear Basics, Smith consistently gives the most thoughtful, pratical information on each subject. In addition, he debunks a lot of myths about bears. This is the ultimate book on bears and bear safety.

A good book.......2002-09-30
This book covers a broad range of Networking Security. Topics that are generally overlooked in most cases. This book is very general in terms of Overall network security and makes you take a step back and review your security procedures and policies. Easy to understand and follow. A great reference guide to go back to also. The reason I gave this book 4 instead of 5 stars is because I feel that a few of the topics should've been covered a little more deeply. A few topics that were covered left me with an incomplete feeling. Like I need to learn more about it. I guess that's what guides usually do. It's a compromise between buying a book that covers one subject/topic very well or something that enlightens you to all subjects/topics that you may have overlooked. All in all.. Great Book. I would buy it again if I lost this copy.

Interesting ,Provocative,Flawed.......2002-07-23
A Physician who moonlights as an Assassin. Interesting. An exposee of a friendly governments treatment of its refugee "problem", provocative. A look into the power elites solution to this problem ,interesting and hopefully flawed. This is just one layer of this onion though. (I won't give it away to the readers who are actually reading this as a hint as to whether to buy this book.)But, suffice it to say the deeper the main character gets into this onion,the more rotten it becomes.Extremely Provovative. I was unsure as to the purpose of this book though . Was it written as an excuse to uncover and expose this rottenness or, merely telling a tale in a "damn the torpedoes ,straight ahead" style . There are some factual errors that belie very flawed research ,you'll see them referred to if you read the other reviews.
Also you'll find some plot jumping,and the odd credibility gap.But its that "Extremely Provocative" layer of the onion that make this worth a read. And I'll give one hint here ,its not the Swedes who end up with the blackest eye.

Active Measures by Alexander Court is an exciting book. From the very beginning, I found the story intriguing and informative. I look forward to Alison Carter's next mission.
Beach Side Reading.......2002-04-25
I really enjoyed this book. I picked it up in an airport for an East to West Coast flight. It is a fun thriller that takes an interesting historical premise and pushes it to the limit. A lot of Swedish readers seem offended, but this makes the book more intriguing. Is there truth to the author's claims? Is he getting close to a touchy subject? There are a few editing mistakes, but sadly, what modern book doesn't have them. This book is a solidly good political thriller. It is there to be enjoyed, not to be scrutinized as reference material.
It's a Spy Novel...not Historical Non-Fiction!.......2001-08-19
This is an excellent read and gives a unique insight into psychological espionage from the perspective of a Physician-Assassin. If you like spy and political intrigue-type novels, then you will really like this one. If you are more the Historical Novel-type and historical accuracy is a must, then you might get distracted by some of the author's historical "liberties". As far as the criticism about proper Swedish spellings etc, if you are the kind of person that bases your judgement of a book's enjoyability on such things. then this one isn't for you. If you like spy thrillers with an interesting point of view, check this one out!
Hilarious reading!.......2001-04-10
I'm a swede myself, so I wonder of what country A.Court actually is writing about. Because I don't recognize Sweden in his version. First I thougt he had mixed up Sweden with recent Serbia, but in the final chapters I wonder if he havent had Afghanistan in mind. His background research looks like it's based on some (small) recent history reports but mainly on some more-then-typical tourist broschures. I thought that you could expected more of a "world-recognized operational expert" in the field of destabilize governments and psychological warfare. Anyway! I'm not insulted. I havent read such a funny novel in years. Its funny because its so stupid. Its true that nobody can learn Sweden about lying of its history(especially when it comes to WWII) but if anybody thinks he know something about how its in Sweden after he had read this novel, he is terribily wrong.
