Great Initiates: A Study of the Secret History of Religions
ASIN: 1564597881 |
Book Description
The reader witnesses spiritual adventure of a depth and intensity rarely equaled by creative human beings. Schure is master in depicting for moderns seekers the engrossing story of man's eternal search for the esoteric knowledge of his origin, evolution and destiny in the light of eternal spirit.
Book Description
This study combines art history and literary criticism in a joint study of the canonical "fathers" of modernism. Arden Reed argues that modernism is a matter of genre blending, hybridization and movements between text and image. Focusing on key works, Reed reveals how Manet and Flaubert actively mix and contaminate their work- Flaubert with images, Manet with narration. Reed extends the argument to the twentieth century, claiming we cannot understand twentieth century modernism while remaining locked within single disciplines.

Book Description
A ruined tower in a vast forest is the haunted home of the world's last great wizard, Mauryl. Here in the storm drenched night, Mauryl performs a final act of the highest Old Magic, a Shaping, hoping that by this most wondrous of spells the wrongs of a long forgotten wizard war may be righted.
In the tower, a boy is brought full grown to life. Named Tristen, he is neither golem nor man, and to Mauryl's dismay he has none of the wisdom needed to ensure the success of his last gambit of the wizard's long life. Presented with the precious book that contains the knowledge he needs, Tristen cannot understand a single word. Instead, Tristen loves his maker blindly, and loves the beauty of the world.
Tristen walks alone and helpless from the last outpost of the Old Lands into a new age of holiness rife with treachery and war. A glamour protects him until, as the veils of unknowning are blown aside by events, Tristen's power is manifest. Then Mauryl's enemies become his. And though Mauryl's book is with him always, still Tristen cannot read it.

Customer Reviews:
Return of the King.......2007-05-13
Fortress in the Eye of Time (1995) is the first fantasy novel in the Fortress series. In a tower within Ynefel, Mauryl Gestaurien spoke a Word and a Shadow was Summoned and then a body was Shaped for it in the form of a young man. Mauryl then gave the name of Tristen to this creation. However, Mauryl had doubted during this working and it soon became evident that Tristen wasn't quite what Mauryl had hoped.
In this novel, Tristen lived within the tower and learned everything Mauryl taught him or maybe this process was more like relearning. Tristen would hear a Word and then other Words would unfold in his mind, building great conceptual frameworks. He learned to read as soon as he looked at a parchment and learned to write when Mauryl put a quill into his hand. But Tristen made many mistakes in his thinking, so Mauryl often grew angry with him, yet always quickly regained his temper and soothed the boy.
Tristen explored the tower by day and liked to read among the pigeons in the drafty loft at the highest point. Owl too perched in the loft, but on the other side of a wall. Each night, however, Mauryl prepared a potion that caused Tristen to sleep without dreams.
Mauryl constantly chided Tristen for his careless ways, insisting that the boy latch all the shutters and doors. At night, while Tristen was sleeping, a fell wind rattled these latches and doors and a Shadow spoke to Mauryl about the past and the future. Mauryl always knew that his old student Hasufin was not fully dead and was only waiting for the right moment to strike.
In this story, Mauryl is overcome by the spirit of his old enemy and immured in the walls of the tower. Afterward Tristen follows Owl east along the old road through Marna Wood. After several days and nights of travel, he finds other men and eventually the town of Henas'amef. When Tristen speaks the names of Mauryl and Ynefel, he is brought to the attention of Emuin.
Emuin was the last student of Mauryl and the only wizard among his associates to survive the second death of Aswyn Hasufin during the bloody overthrow of Althalen. Thereafter, Emuin became a Teranthine priest meditating on his sins and later the tutor the Crown Prince of Ylesuin. Now Tristen has come into his life and Emuin must face his fears.
Emuin sends Tristen to the Crown Prince, now serving as Viceroy of Amefel province. He counsels him to befriend Tristen, so Cefwyn gives Tristen titles, retainers, horses and access to his person. In return, Tristen saves his life more than once. Over time, Cefwyn notes that Tristen is a better horseman than himself, a formidable warrior and a person with inherent magic. So Cefwyn eventually learns to listen closely to his friend's advice on war and magic.
This story tells of treason and sorcery from the Aswydds of Amefel province. It also relates the delight of the people of Amefel in the return of a Sihhe Prince among them. And it recounts the unexpected meeting of the King of Ylesuin and the Regent of Elwynor shortly after their elevation to these new estates.
As is typical of the author, this tale is told from the point of view of certain characters. These characters struggle with doubts and fears, always striving to do the right thing. Every plot twist is a surprise to these characters and must be integrated into their own thoughts. In other words, their minds function much as our own, but naturally we would do much better in such situations. Right?
Highly recommended for Cherryh fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of high magic, widespread treason and deep friendship.
-Arthur W. Jordin
Starts slow...gets better.......2007-04-24
I can see why some gave up on this book. The intial development of the main character (Tristen) gets a little tedious. However, I even enjoyed this section because of the excellent writing style of Ms. Cherryh. Also, I think that the author was purposely leading us through what is really the early chilhood of Tristen, after his shaping. This takes a bit of patience.
Foolish me, I thought this was a stand alone novel, and as I read further I wondered how the story could pobbibly be wrapped up in one book--which it isn't, of course.
This was a worthwhile read, despite the slow start. I intend to read the sequel.
A completely different slant on an old story line.......2006-11-23
I loved this book. To be honest, the first half of the book doesn't move very fast, but you come to appreciate how the author controls the flow of the story based on the progress of the main character. It's a very interesting technique that takes a little patience to enjoy.
The story centers around a young man called back from a distant past and who's soul has already lived a life. His challenges in adjusting to life with no real past are very well written and yet his native intelligence and personality begin to grow quickly.
The characters that surround the protagonist are fairly well written and far from perfect themselves. For me the frailties of people are often neglected in most fiction unless it is overly depicted in the bad guy. In this case the author is very effective when describing the different supporting cast and creating reasons for them to be who they are.
The story follows the political manuevering of a Prince and various factions who either want him dead or simply out of the way. The culmination of the story when the Main Character begins to experience the depth of who is will be is very exciting.
On a final note, I think that the author does a good job of describing conditions that people live in without wasting too much time on trivia. It makes for a more believable read when life is a little rustic, even for the nobility.
Read this book!! The next three in the series are a worthwhile reward.
Another Cherryh hater........2006-09-28
I'm a huge science fiction/fantasy fan. I love Robin Hobb, George R.R. Martin, Orson Scott Card, Margaret Weis, etc. etc. Because of that, my boyfriend insisted I read a C.J. Cherryh book, and first gave me "Foreigner," one of her most popular books. I DESPISED it. It was like torture, and I had to finish it because the recommender was sleeping right next to me and would see me throw it in the trash. After I finished it, he convinced me it just "wasn't my style," and that I should try another, and so he gave me "Fortress."
ARRRRRGGHH! I have never read anything so boring or pointless in my whole life! How is Cherryh so popular? What am I missing that makes people like her work?
In summary, the main character, Tristan, is "created" by a wizard one day to help fight an evil force. The wizard tries to watch over and teach young Tristan, but then he dies and Tristan has to make his own way. He comes to a kingdom and becomes involved in the city politics, which happen to relate to the evil force. Then things happen, sort of, the end.
The main character is supposed to be creative and different because, since he is created by a wizard, he is "born" as a fully-grown boy, but with the innocence of a newborn. But, the main character isn't just "innocent"--he is pointlessly stupid. And I don't need 200 pages of him fumbling around trying to remember to comb his hair and not drag mud in the castle and try and not get yelled at by the wizard before something happens. And you know what happens when something happens?
NOTHING.
Some wind blows and the wizard that has been watching him dies. Woo. Scary.
The mystery of this novel--the secret that is supposed to keep you interested and want to read to the end--is who is Tristan, really, and how does he relate to this evil force? Also, how is this evil force going to try and wreak havoc and how will Tristan try and stop it? Not a bad premise, if slightly unoriginal. But this book never really provides any clear answers. Never. And the answers it does give are not very interesting.
So, if you enjoy books that are completely focused on human psychology and small, trifling inner political battles of high-fantasy citystates, then by all means, pick this one up. If you're looking for a good story and dynamic characters you care about, skip it. And Cherryh altogether.
Beautiful Journey.......2006-09-21
Last Week, in anticipation of the new book in this series, "Fortress of Ice", I re-read, "Fortress In The Eye Of Time" and rediscovered what a joy it is to read. The book I had just finished the week before was the newest Goodkind book "Phantom", and while the whole time reading that story I wanted to go faster to get through all the wasted rehash of words to get to the 100 or so pages worth my time, it just underscored how great C.J. Cherry is as a writer.
When I read a C J Cherryh story, I never want to hurry I just want to enjoy the story as it unfolds, and what a story Fortress is!
Fortress is a wonderful story in the style of High Fantasy, with the feel of truth, like a history that never was, if you enjoy stories of honor, politics, and Magic, and want to start a series that leaves you feeling you want the story to never end rather than please tie this up.... This is a story for you!

A wonderful experience..........2004-02-21
"Antología de la literatura fantástica" delivers exactly what the title promises: a selection of short stories with something in common, fantasy. But what is "fantasy"?. The dictionary says that it is "fiction characterized by highly fanciful or supernatural elements", but I think that it is also literature that amazes and bewilders us, freeing the reader from reality and introducing him to other worlds, other possibilities...
The selection of the short stories included in "Antología de la literatura fantástica" was made by Jorge Luis Borges, Adolfo Bioy Casares and Silvina Ocampo, three well-known argentinian writers that somehow managed to choose the perfect stories that enabled them to give the reader a good idea of what fantasy is really about. Some of the authors included in this selection are Thomas Carlyle, Julio Cortázar, G. K. Chesterton, Chuang Tzu, James Joyce, F. Kafka, Guy de Maupassant, Giovanni Papini, E. A. Poe, Saki, F. Rabelais, A. B. Casares, J. L. Borges, S. Ocampo and H. G. Wells.
I really enjoyed this book, and I specially appreciated the fact that it comprises stories written by different authors, because that didn't allow me to get bored. Each author has his distinctive style, and a different way of charming the reader, but all achieve just that. On the whole, reading this book was a wonderful experience, and I can recommend it to you.

Customer Reviews:
good job on translation.......2004-03-03
This book is a translaiton of a particularly challenging hebrew version. I am not certain how true the translation is to the author's original version, but I found the translation to be unusually lucid. Instead of losing the reader in the general difficulties associated with reading in translation, they packaged the words of the great Rabbi Shapira in a "new agey" relatable kind of lexicon. Most people are not aware that the Torah has expression as is described in this book.
Graceful and inspiring.......2001-03-05
This is Rabbi Andrea Cohen-Kiener's interpretive translation of a mid-20th century work found buried in the rubble of the Warsaw Ghetto. Reb Kalonymous Kalman Shapira, its author, came from a long line of distinguished Hassidic rabbis, and his writings show that he lived up to his birthright. Amid the degradation within the ghetto, he was able to write a manual for transforming one's emotions and perceptions to focus on the spiritual. Rabbi Cohen-Kiener's translation makes use of contemporary spiritual vocabulary (drawn in part from the Fourth Way tradition) to make Reb Kalman's thought accessible to a wider audience.
