Book Description

Sultry Latina bounty hunter Marisela Morales is back, taking on the Boston elite -- and her gorgeous ex -- in a red-hot, roller-coaster adventure from USA Today bestselling author Julie Leto.

Three months into her training for Titan International Investigations, Marisela Morales needs some R & R, and the tuxedoed hombre de misterio sending her scorching glances across a crowded ballroom looks like he'd be happy to fulfill her needs. Closer inspection reveals that the masked man is danger with a capital F -- as in Frankie Vega, her ex-lover and Titan colleague. But before their reunion reaches the boiling point, a senator is shot and Marisela must confront a female assassin with a wicked reputation -- and a link to Marisela's old life.

Working under Frankie provides Marisela with plenty of aggravation, along with some sinfully sexy after-hours benefits, but she'll need to keep her mind on the job if she wants to beat the demons from her past...including an irresistible man who betrayed her...and a killer chica who's her biggest challenge yet.

There's just something about a woman with a gun. Kick-butt heroines that shoot first and ask questions later have always appealed to me. Whether they attire themselves in red miniskirts and four-inch Ferragamo's, urban chic consisting of broken-in blue jeans and ratty t-shirts, or do their best work dressed in nothing at all, heroines that take control of their own lives and work to make a difference in the world around them are nothing short of my idols.

For Marisela Morales, working for Alberto Garcia at AAA-Able Bail Bonds has finally brought a sense of belonging to her life. A Cuban-American woman who found herself all too often on the wrong side of the law when younger, Alberto offered her a haven-a real job, something meaningful that would keep her busy and off the streets. Once she turned twenty-one, Marisela became a bond enforcer. For seven years now she's tracked down outlaws dumb enough to jump their bail and brought them back to justice.

This time, the bail-jumper is someone who hits a little too close to home. Francisco "Frankie" Vega is Marisela's past-a young punk who later turned his life around to spend years in prison as an undercover DEA informant. Now, though, Frankie is out, and after two years back in the real world, he's been busted for possession-and unwisely skipped his bail. So what if the chemistry is still there? Who cares that Frankie's first words to her in ten years are "I remember when you used to stroke me like that?" And really, what difference does it make if his striking good looks and snake-charmer charisma make her eyes roll back in her head and the hairs on her arms stand up? Marisela has hunted down Frankie to do a job, and that job is to return him back over to the authorities.

But love dies hard, even that brought about by circumstances of a hard life of two dispassionate youths. The chemistry between Frankie and Marisela is still there, and they're both finding it hard to turn off. Frankie has no idea that Marisela isn't Alberto's secretary, has no clue that she packs a really big-and really illegal-gun. Marisela doesn't realize that Frankie is dealing with bigger issues than just jumping bond. All in all, what they don't know about each other is more than what they remember.

Together, Marisela and Frankie must overcome their shared history, rebuild their trust and broken hearts, and stop a handful of bad guys along the way. Action-adventure mixed with passion is always a heady mix, and this book is no different.

Take a dash of Stephanie Plum, throw in the spunk of Eve Dallas, mix it up with some Cuban food and a gallon of margaritas, and you've got a true winner in DIRTY LITTLE LIES. This book was an excellent start to what will no doubt be a long-lived series-one that you won't want to miss an episode of.

Julie Leto's DIRTY LITTLE LIES tells of Marisela, who has been training for an investigative job and seeks relief from a demanding routine. Her romantic fling evolves into a dangerous situation when a senator is shot and she finds the assassin has links to her old world. Readers are treated to a story line hard to define: part PI, part romance, and many twists and turns.

2 out of 5 stars Miss Congeniality it Isn't.......2007-07-09

I didn't enjoy this book at all. I tried to like it, I really did. But about halfway through, I gave up and skimmed the rest. Lacie was unbelievable and vapid. She showed promise at the beginning when she over powered her kidnapper with her baton, but she never really showed that kind of spirit again. Lacie was too perfect, to sugary-sweet and I didn't like her at all.
Ben, while I think he had potential, also fell somewhat flat for me. He kept commenting on the perfection that was Lacie; I never knew what he saw in her aside from the perfection.
I was also annoyed by the use of similes, they were thrown in everywhere. The worst was when the author describes the freckles of the shoplifter, she says they were "like sand on the beach".
I was also unhappy that the relationship between Lacie and Dinah was never really resolved or explained; Dinah was painted to be a misfit non-beauty contestant and neither Lacie nor their mother really had anything to do with her, except to try and prevent her from marrying her boyfriend.
And Lacie becomes the Mayor of Clabber Falls. GIVE ME A BREAK. How was that possible? This book is just awful and I recommend you run far, far away.

The heroine was wonderful and the humor kept me laughing.

A great book!

2 out of 5 stars Confusing mixture of comedy/tragedy........2004-11-04

I was also reminded of the movie "Miss Congeniality" when I read this book--beauty pageant world turns nasty. But no one was hurt in the movie; even the violence at the end was slapstick comedy. What bothered me about the book was that the mixture of silly romantic comedy and psychological thriller didn't work. The ugly undertones and tragic climax did not fit the light "tone" of the book. And the Epilogue went right back to silliness, as though nothing bad had happened. I would have given it 3 stars up until the end.

2 out of 5 stars Baton Barbie.......2004-05-25

Ben Camaglia is a Washington DC FBI agent exiled to a small town in Kansas. When Lacie Jo Baxter the "Summer Squash Queen" is kidnapped Ben figures solving the case would get him back to DC or even Chicago or New York where he belongs

Lacie, a serial beauty queen since she was 5, manages to escape and returns home. Before she even goes up the steps of her house her mother puts a brush in her hand and a tube of lipstick (which Lacie rejects until Mom gets her the "right shade"). Lacie doesn't want to talk to Ben about the kidnapping until she tells "her public" all about it. This is where I knew I had a problem with Lacie but I convinced myself she would get better as the book progressed. Wrong.

At one point Ben described Lacie as "empty-headed, illogical, dumb as a rock, brainless, and clueless". That may seem pretty harsh. Unfortunately he was dead on. She was also self-involved, boring, shallow, and downright stupid. Her main topics of conversation were about beauty pageants, dresses, hair, make-up, beauty products. This was her whole life.

And if possible her mother was worse. She hadn't won Miss Summer Squash when she was Lacie's age because she got pregnant with Lacie. So she lived vicariously through her daughter making Lacie feel obligated since she'd "ruined" her mother's life. Remind you of anyone? Her mother treated Lacie's younger sister Dinah like dirt because she wasn't beauty pageant material.

This book gave beauty pageants contestants and pageants themselves a bad name. It stereotyped these women as vacuous, unintelligent Bimbos. I can't understand why Ben fell in love with this woman. What would they talk about after the initial attraction wore off? Lacie giving him more hair tips? And the ending was beyond unbelievable!

But I have to tell you that Ms. Lane's "Reinventing Romeo" was one of the best books I've ever read! I would definitely recommend that one but don't waste your money on this one!

5 out of 5 stars Fans of romantic suspense will appreciate this novel.......2004-03-31

Miss Kansas Summer Squash, Lacie Jo Baxter finished her upbeat speech at the opening of Mercer's Drug Store in Klaber Falls only to have someone toss her into a car's trunk. As the vehicle speeds off Lacie Jo holds tightly onto her baton while encouraging herself by saying "Not a pushover". They stop at Whipple Farm seven miles from town with nothing in between. The buoyant Lacie Jo hits her kidnapper with her baton and escapes.

FBI agent Ben Camaglia is in exile working on doing nothing as there has not been much demand to investigate crop circles lately. Ben knows that if the incident of necessary roughness of the senator's son occurred today, he would pound the idiot even more. His first assignment in Kansas is to insure that is no future abduction of Lacie Jo occurs. The twosome are immediately attracted to one another, but neither expects anything to happen between them. That is until the kidnapper tries to snatch Lacie Jo, putting Ben in panic over the safety of the woman he loves.

Fans of romantic suspense will appreciate this delightful thriller with its congenial tidbits involving beauty contests, though the exciting story line centers on the abductions of Lacie Jo and the DIRTY LITTLE LIES behind them. Lacie Jo is a brave person while Big Ben feels like a large fish in a pond too small until his beloved is taken again. The over use of complex sentences means keeping an oxygen tank handy (periods would help) though Connie Lane provides a terse tale with amusing asides that will please sub-genre readers that this author has moved into this nest.

Reuben Maitland runs the UK’s elite forensic crime squad — GeneCrime. At the cutting edge of modern crime detection, GeneCrime use the very latest scientific knowledge to identify, arrest, prosecute and convict Britain’s worst criminals. But now the hunters are about to become the hunted, with their own techniques being used in an effort to destroy them.

When one of the GeneCrime team is brutally murdered, Reuben does not suspect that this is the start of a concerted attack on the squad. His first clue comes when the police discover a warning written in the victim’s own blood, in the language of genetics. When another team member is captured, tortured and sadistically murdered, Reuben is desperate to find and stop the killer. But as his investigations gather steam, he finds his career under attack. Reuben is perceived as having used his scientific discovery for a very personal reason, and rivals in the police use this to remove him from command. Suddenly ostracized and under suspicion, he knows he must fight this battle alone. The killing has not stopped, and the only thing certain is that Reuben is next on the killer’s list.

      Book Description

Inos, the late king's daughter, had been kidnapped through the magic casement even as the Impish legions overrunning her tiny kingdom were storming the castle tower. Now she was a prisoner in a desert land ruled by a dockside whore with a talent for magic and a passion for politics.

She little dreamed that the loyal stableboy Rap had jumped through the casement after her. But no one really knew how the magic worked, and Rap found himself not in a desert, but in the steaming jungles of Faerie -- half a world away from Inos!

Rap was determined to rescue his beloved queen, and nothing could stop him -- not even the monsters and headhunters of Faerie, or the paranoid machinations of an evil sorcerer...

5 out of 5 stars This is a great series!.......2007-04-16

This is book two of Dave Duncan's 4-book, "A Man of His Word", series. The entire series is very enjoyable and its characters and situations are just great! Read this series, and you won't be disappointed. A note of caution though, Don't read Mr. Duncan's sequel series, "A Handful of Men". It is not only an absolute waste of time, but you will also feel ripped off and disgusted with the author.

5 out of 5 stars Second in a wonderful series of eight books.......2006-11-07

This is the second volume in the first of two marvellous fantasy quartets.

The first series, "A man of his word" has titles taken from Keats' "Ode to a nightingale" and the titles perfectly match the themes of the books.

The lines which inspired the titles are as follows -

"The voice I hear this passing night was heard
In ancient days, by Emperor and Clown ....

... The same that oft-times hath
Charmed magic casements, opening on the foam
of perilous seas, in Faery lands forlorn"

The four books of the first quartet are

      The Magic Casement
      Faery Lands Forlorn
      Perilous Seas
      Emperor and Clown

These four books tell one complete story and are best read in this order.

There is a sequel quartet, set 15 years later in the same universe, which is called "A handful of men" and has its titles taken from Masefield's poem, "Tomorrow." The four books in that story are

      The Cutting Edge
      Upland Outlaws
      The Stricken Field
      The Living God

All eight books are set in a world of Gods and Sorcerers, where magic abilities are conferred by the knowledge of words of power. The descriptions of magic powers and how they work are far more effectively and consistently thought through than in the typical fantasy novel, and as the hero and heroine travel through a strange and diverse world a picture both of that world and the serious threat which it faces gradualy takes shape.

At the start of "Faery Lands Forlorn", Inos, rightful Queen of Krasnegar, was kidnapped through a Magic casement just as her castle was being over-run by Imps. Her childhood friend, the stableboy Rap, had jumped through the casement after her. But Inos finds herself a prisoner in a desert land, while Rap is transported to the Faery lands of the title. Rap struggles to make his way round the world to rescue his queen. She had been warned by a God to "trust in love" - can Rap reach Inos in time to prevent her from making a terrible mistake about what this means?

The original printings of the "A man of his word" quartet had beautiful covers painted by Don Maitz, and the books would almost have been worth buying for these covers if they had not also comprised a beautiful story.

4 out of 5 stars I love this book - not the publisher.......2005-06-02

I owned an original copy of this book but have let my family borrow it and it is hiding somewhere so I thought I would buy it again because I loved the story so much and felt a little bit guilty that none of my money was going to Dave Duncan since I had bought it used. Anyways I'm really glad that the books are available again since this is my all time favorite series (this is the third time I'm reading it) however in this second publishing this book contains a LOT of errors which makes for a somewhat annoying read.

5 out of 5 stars Second Book in the Man of His Word Series.......2004-05-13

Faery Lands Forlorn picks up right where Magic Casement left off with Rap fecklessly and fearlessly plunging in through the magic casement to try and find Inos, only to find that Inos and he landed in different realms. Inos was captured by the sorceress Rasha, a self-styled Sultana who has taken over the country of Zark, land of the Djinns. Inos is unsure why she has been captured by Rasha, but she is determined to escape so she turns to Azak, the rightful Sultan, confident that if anyone hates Rasha more than her, it would be the man Rasha has humiliated and enslaved. For Rasha has cast a spell over Azak that causes anyone who speaks his rightful title as Sultan to turn to stone and that any woman he touches (aside from Rasha) he will burn like a hot iron.

Meanwhile, Rap, Little Chicken and companion have found themselves wandering in the land of Faerie. By now, Rap has discovered that he has a word of power and that that is why Andor was trying to befriend him. Rap also discovered their secret - that Andor, Jalon, Sagorn and Darad all were cursed by a sorcerer so that only one of them can "live" at a time, the other personalities are all in a kind of limbo while one person gets through whatever adventure they are currently in the middle of. Even though Rap has his doubts about his so-called allies, he is willing to use everyone for their skills to try and find Inos and rescue her. Along the way, he expands his band by befriending Captain Gathmore, a Jotunn sailor who manages to get Rap hired on as part of his crew. At least Rap is mobile now, but he isn't heading in the right direction and he still has old enemies to worry about, as well as the unwanted attention of the witches and warlocks of the regions...

Faery Lands Forlorn picks up the adventure from Magic Casement without missing a beat. Since David Duncan is a superb author, I think that you could jump in on this one and understand what is going on without reading the first one, but why deprive yourself of the pleasure? Rap is still a delightful hero in a very non-traditional sense and the reader gets the opportunity to learn about how magic works in the world of Pandemia as Rap discovers more powers and uses for his gifts of farsight and working with animals. The way that magic works in this world is fascinating and it is interesting to note that the author does distinguish between a sorcerer and a magician in that the former's spells are permanent and the latter's spells only last as long as the magician is focusing on them. Again, Rap was by far more interesting than Inos, but she did further along the plot and give Duncan to create another section of this world that reminded me of an Arabian Nights story. Aunt Kade is really starting to come into her own in this book and she makes the parts with Inos sparkle a bit more than they did before. The secondary characters are also delightful and fun to get to know. If you are interested in reading a tale set in a world both familiar and strange where Duncan takes everything about a traditional fairy tale and just tweaks it a bit so it is fresh and unexpected, then this is a series for you!

4 out of 5 stars Things Speed Up a Bit.......2001-04-10

Duncan continues to develop his fairly unique world and his entirely unique system of magic in the second volume of "A Man of His Word". The series as a whole is a romp through the richly-detailed world of Pandemia, and each volume is as chock-full of wonders, adventure and cliffhangers as the chapters in a Saturday-matinee adventure serial.

Beautiful Inos, rightful Queen of Krasnegar, and her great-aunt, Princess Kadolan (not nearly as fuddy duddy and scatterbrained as she often appears) have been magically spirited away to Zark (where the Djinns live -- the Arabian Nights come to life) and dropped will she nill she into the middle of a rather nasty and dangerous palace intrigue etween the rightful Sultan and the "Sultana" a powerful sorceress who has displaced him and rules him and his land through her sorcery, which has a strong sexual element -- her spell on him causes his merest touch to burn the flesh of anything female (except the sorceress herself) like red-hot iron.

Rasha, the sorceress, hopes to use Inos in a political game among the Wardens, the four powerful sorcerors who control the world's sorcery under the Compact.

Inos, though apalled by the treatment and place of women in Zark, sets out to make an ally of Azak, the Sultan, in an attempt to thwart Rasha.

Meanwhile, Rap the faithful stableboy, Little Chicken, and the Gang (those who have read the previous book will understand that reference, a fuller explication would be a spoiler if you haven't read the previous book yet) find themselves in Faerie, where Much Is Not As It Seems, and Rap meets Captain Gathmore, a genuine berserker Jotunn (Norse/Viking) who will be important for the rest of the series.

Caught in a magical trap set for those who know Words of Power, Rap learns a little more both about the Words themselves and about magic and sorcery -- i always like the explanation that sorcery is permanent, magic fades sooner or later after the magician turns his attention away, but the end result is often the same -- a mage explains: "I could turn your head into an anvil. It would be a temporary anvil, but you'd be permanently dead."

Rap and Little Chicken manage to escape and join Gathmore's jotunn crew and escape Faerie.

Both Rap and Inos seem to be on their way to saving themselves and making progress toward saving the other -- but the book ends with disasterous reverses for both.

With two more books to go, all looks hopeless.

But, like all good serials, the next chapter will save us from this cliffhanger and give us even more more thrills, chills and adventure...

3 out of 5 stars More details about crimes than about profiling.......2005-07-08

I received this book as a birthday gift! Well, I cannot really commend it for such occasions as it might leave some readers sleepless and frightened. Britton introduces shocking details of murders and sexual crimes that happened in the UK. Most of the offenders are described as human beings with psychotic defects or anti-social personality structures that sooner or later all recede into their criminal behavioral patterns. Britton offers only few details about how psychological profils of serious criminals are worked out. More than once I asked myself: "What makes him so sure about his conclusions?"
The most interesting analysis in this book is also the most ambiguous! Brittons gives a detailed account of a sexually motivated murder in the Wimbledon-Commons-Park in London (1992). Based on his profile, Colin Stagg a young man living in the neighborhood got on the radar of the police. A female undercover agent was used to get information about his deviant sexual orientations and a confession out of Stagg. Britton assisted to this delicate intervention and orchestrated the agent's moves. In this book he argues that the propability of a second person with Stagg's deviant sexual orientations being in the Wimbledon-Commons-Park at the time of the crime was very tiny. In the end, the undercover investigation wasn't fully successful. When Stagg finally was prosecuted for murder in 1994, the court declared the undercover operation as unlawful. Stagg was acquitted and released from detention.
What the book doesn't say: In 2003, the Metropolitan Police found traces of DNA on the dress of the victim. The investigation is still under way. At the end of 2004 new evidence led to another person who presumably committed the crime, a convicted murderer and rapist.
What can we learn from all this? Profiling based on forensic psychology has certainly its value in investigations of serious crimes, but we should never forget that they are based on probabilistic models. Sometimes profiles lead into wrong directions, like in the case of the Washington sniper. As evidence they simply are not admittable.

          5 out of 5 stars Intriguing.......2004-02-07

Both my father (50) and myself (20) have really enjoyed this book. It was well written...actually so well written I was scared to sleep at night. I would recomment it to anyone interested in the mind or crime. Especially of interest to me was his work on the James Bulger murder and the House of Horrors.
I am a vivacious reader but have not enjoyed a book on so many levels this much for a long time.
10/10 I only wish there were more.

Just a few pages into this throat-grabbing story of family terror and you'll understand why such writers as Dean Koontz and John Saul have such nice things to say about Deanie Francis Mills. Gypsy Halden is still haunted by a murder she witnessed as a child, an event so terrible that it turned her stone deaf. Now happily married to a Dallas police officer, she is forced to relive her childhood terror. Her husband, charged with murder, disappears, and the dreaded demon of her dreams seems to have returned.

Carmon Hardy has done an excellent job of describing the Mormon church's doctrinal change from a polygamous to a monogomist ethic. The first part of his book deals with the polygamous beginnings and early Mormon justification for the practice. Polygamy was considered the "family order of heaven" and was sanctioned by revelation given to the founding prophet Joseph Smith. Polygamy was practiced in secret until the Mormons came to Utah, were it was openly taught. Early church leaders even taught that polygamy was a requirement to reach the highest Heaven, where God dwells. Hardy spends the rest of his book describing the slow death of polygamy. Even though polygamy had always been against the law, the Federal government started passing tougher laws against the practice. The most strict law became the "Edmunds-Tucker act" in 1887, which was upheld by the Supreme Court in 1890. This law disincorporated the church and most of its properties. The church realized that it could not survive and so that same year the manifesto was issued, which publically stated the church would abandon plural marriage. However, it was not that simple. Hardy shows how many members of the church, including high church leaders, continued to practice polygamy well into the beginning of the next century. This created a discrepancy between what the church was saying (that they had given up polygamy) and what they were still doing (allowing some to continue in taking new wives). Hardy's final chapter deals with the issue of deception used by some in the church to try to keep the practice alive. "Solemn Covenant" is very well written and Hardy's keen sense of irony manifests itself throughout the book. Especially in the chapters that deal with the church being so strong in the doctrine of polygamy, to a church that is now strongly anti-polygamous. This is the best book about Mormon polygamy that I have read.

4 out of 5 stars Solemn Covenant: A Good Work.......1998-08-31

The author uses literary styles with superb grace, with supple documentation throughout. This book is certainly not for the recreational reader, who is bound to be overwhelmed with its intellectual and scholarly approach to a subject consumed with controversy. The author stops short at doing justice to the topic by failing to adequately attribute the origin of polygamy to providential revelation. He instead ascribes its origin to naturalistic reasons, almost as though Joseph Smith read a sociological history of the eastern United States and then decided to carry forth those ideas. Joseph himself admitted that the introduction of Polygamy would rock the church and that he really had great reluctance in becoming involved himself. He went forward due to divine command. Overall, Hardy did well and deserves the utmost credit. But true history views its path in a panoramic fashion.
