Wherever the ocean connects with the land, unique plant and animal communities evolve. Tides come and go on sandy beaches and rocky shores. In these restless habitats, animals and plants depend on the sea, the land, and each other for growth, shelter, and food.

5 out of 5 stars An Unusual Read.......2005-11-30

Shoreland was so many things that it can't help but fascinate. The thousands of children stolen by Nazis to breed a super race is a historical fact. The adventures of Liz, the young protagonist, the imaginative creations of unusual circumstances and relationships such as between Liz and her brother by adoption, the word pictures of the verities in the New England middleclass scene, other sketches of widely varying social and cultural groups, and great writing of both action and description.

C.F.Tunnicliffe was one of the most significant British wildlife artists of the 20th century. Shorelands Summer Diary is a classic: a combination of outstanding watercolour and scraperboard work, coupled with excerpts from a "Summer Diary" of life and wildlife on Anglesey, North Wales. Increasingly difficult to find, "Shorelands" is considered to be one of the authors finest works: a real "must have". An excellent example of the artists work and a wonderful insight into the island of Ynys Mon, Anglesey, no Tunnicliffe collection would be complete without it.

                  3 out of 5 stars Entry-level "Worlds".......2004-05-11

David Colbert is best-known for his "Magical Worlds of Harry Potter," a relatively matter-of-fact background guide. Now Colbert produces "The Magical Worlds of Lord of the Rings," with its insights into the literature, legend, and religion behind "Lord of the Rings.

Colbert does a fairly good job of giving us insights into the myths (Norse legends), literature ("Beowulf," the book "Babbitt," Shakespeare's influence on faeries and elves), religion (the source of Galadriel: Mary, mother of Jesus), and Tolkien's own opinions at the time (industrialization destroying the beautiful countryside where he grew up).

Colbert makes some rather obvious errors (usually linked with the "Silmarillion" rather than "Lord of the Rings"), but nothing too awful. Overall he does a pretty good job of addressing common questions like "How Many Languages Did Tolkien Invent?", "Who Was Tolkien's First Dark Lord?" or "How Did Orcs Get So Ugly?". He writes breezily and conversationally, as if addressing a bunch of listeners.

Does "Magical Worlds" stand above other Tolkien guides? Nah. It's a pretty good guide for entry-level fans, but long-time fans will already know much of this material. However, fans who are new to Middle-Earth and who don't know a lot of the background will probably find this invaluable. If you have only seen the movies, or are only just tackling the books, this is a good place to start answering your questions.

"Magical Worlds of Lord of the Rings" is a pretty solid beginner's guide to "Lord of the Rings" and its background material. New to Middle-Earth? Then you may just find your answers here.

                  3 out of 5 stars decent..........2004-02-08

Although easy to read, and good for those who have seen the movies and not read the book, I would not really recommend this to anyone who has read the books and is looking to expand on their knowledge of Tolkien's world. There are a few mistakes and often times (to my horror) characters are compared to Harry Potter characters. If you want a good bed time read this book is probably for you. But if you are serious about getting to know Tolkien, try something else first.

2 out of 5 stars Colbert and Tolkien.......2004-02-01

I found David cobert's peice very informative, clear, and at times very profound. However, as a Tolkien fan, having studied The Silmarillion, and having read Tolkien's works numerous times, I found several errors in this book.

Certainly there can be different interpretations of works, but Colbert seems to have had misconceptions about both the Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. I found that most of the time he knows what he's talking about and is learned in the books, but I also find that he doesn't understand some of the things Tokien wrote. For example, Colbert says that humans were given Numenor as a reward for helping the Elves. It is quite clear in The Silmarillion that waht Colbert states isn't exactly what occurs. It was, yes, a land given to Men by the Valar, to not just any humans, but the Edain. These are not just Men, they have Elven blood in them. This is the place of the Edain, distinct from ordinary men of Middle-Earth. Colbert fails to make this distinction. Also, in Colbert's chapter on religion in The Lord of the Rings, he calls the Valar "angelic spirits." Indeed that they may be, but to the Elves these are like gods with Iluvatar being the supreme god and creator of the universe. Colbert states that Hobbits do not belive in gods, but when Frodo is stabbed by the morgul blade of the witch-king at Amon-Sul (Weather-Top), he screams out "O Elbereth! Githoniel!" which are in reference to the Valar. I found other discrepancies, but I will spare them for the sake of time.

Again, Colbert wrote this book for any one to read within a matter of hours ( I read it in 2) and wrote its very clearly. He does, however, fail to remain true to some of the facts in the history of Middle-Earth. Some elemtents are also not developed for the reader, whether having read Tolkien or not, to understand.

4 out of 5 stars A guide to Middle Earth for both novice and fan.......2004-01-02

As of the writing of this review, the third movie installment of the Lord of the Rings has just been released into the theaters.  With all the hype over each release of The Lord of the Rings, it seems incredible to me that there is anyone who is not familiar with at least the story line of this epic.  Yet, it seems that almost daily I meet people who have not the faintest idea of what the trilogy is about.  They have not seen the movies; they have not read the books, they do not know what Hobbits are, they never heard of an Ent, and they have no idea of what a Orc is.  If  this describes you, you need this book.

Well written and easy to read, it can serve as a primer to the uninitiated or as a resource to the most avid fan of LOTRs.  What makes this book so interesting is that Colbert delves into the thinking of Tolkien as he wrote the Ring trilogy as well as the medieval literature that inspired him.  Now before you prejudge this book and dismiss it as an uninteresting tome, I beg you to reconsider.  It is really a fascinating read.

The huge success of the Lord of the Rings revival can be attributed to a large part to the September 11 attack.  There is a war between good and evil, light and darkness going on and people need to know that good will prevail.  But the Lord of the Rings is more complicated than merely good verses evil; it is a story of the complex motives and emotions that govern us.  The Magical Worlds of the Lord of the Rings will help deepen you understanding of these great themes.

4 out of 5 stars A mythological study of Tolkien for juvenile readers.......2003-12-21

Better than Leslie Ellen Jones's "Myth & Middle-earth": by not pretending to give anything more than simple, basic explanations of the most obvious mythic parallels, and delivering them in language not overly cutesy, Colbert succeeds at his modest task surprisingly well.

One of the world’s best-selling authors has written a moving story about a teenager’s life in Northern Sweden.

12-year-old Joel lives with his father in the cold northern part of Sweden. At night he often sneaks out of the house to look for a lonely dog he has seen from his window. On the bridge across the icy river he starts a secret society and has adventures. But one night he discovers that his father’s bed is also empty, and so he will have to come to terms with his father’s newfound love. The harsh reality of Joel’s world comes vividly to life and leaves the reader spellbound.

5 out of 5 stars Mankell Writes For Young People.......2006-02-28

Joel is eleven years old and lives in cold Northern Sweden. His mother has left him and his father Samuel, leaving him with a great sense of being abandoned. He wants to care for his dad, a sailor who has abandoned the sea to take a job chopping trees, a job that he hates, but at the same time wants to know from his father why his mum has left them. At school he is ridiculed because he has no mother. To further complicate matters, his father becomes friends with Sara, the waitress at the local bar. No one can take the place of his mother, certainy not this woman who might produce unwanted half-brothers and sisters for him. He fears being even further abandoned when he returns home to find his father's bed empty. Joel gets into serious trouble by listening to his young so-called friend Ture. Mr. Mankell of course weaves all these elements into a fine story for youngsters as Joel learns about death, caring for people who are different from him-- No-Nose, the woman "with a handkerchief instead of a nose in her face and the Old Bricklayer who takes him for a ride in his lorry-- and ultimately that he is much loved by his father Samuel.

Mr. Mankell, a first class writer of detective novels, in this moving story joins the ranks of other fine writers, for example Reynolds Price, Joyce Carol Oates and Joni Morrison in the United States and Ian McEwan in Great Britain, who also have written fine fiction for young people.

I purchased The Bridge of Stars as a gift for my friend's young son, Harry, for his First Holy Communion. The book is so well written and thought out, and will provide him with inspiration and comfort as he ages and goes on his journey through life.
So impressive is this book, that I will be adding to my own collection.

5 out of 5 stars An Enchanting Work Of Art.......2002-06-06

As a student of theology, a writer of poetry, a mother to three children, and a collector of beautiful books, The Bridge Of Stars is a wonderful addition to my library. In my quest to instill in my children the oneness of all people, I find that prayers, hymns, and poetry from around the world reveal to them the common beliefs, hopes, and dreams we all share.

Apart from being a remarkable collection of writing, this book is probably the most artistically abundant book of its kind. Among the images that adorn each page you will find flowers, waterfalls, landscapes, and even the magical quality of a rain-drenched spider's web.

This masterpiece was well thought out, with the perfect placement of text among the artwork. The words and images combined create a feeling of peace and tranquillity, as well as a connectedness to all of nature. For example, the poem/prayer One Equal Light by John Donne is accompanied by a photo of sunlight flowing through the limbs of trees in a peaceful wood.

For all with an interest in spirituality, this book of art, poetry, and nature is a must-have addition to your shelf!

5 out of 5 stars Building Bridges: Interfaith Construction Company.......2002-02-21

In the many dark days which followed the atrocities of September 11th, when the American spirit looked for truth, it became a mantra of the people, "We must try to understand." We may never fathom the actions of fanaticism, and few of us have the preparational groundwork to fully comprehend the religious differences offered as an excuse for war, but one thing is certain: we need to go beyond the differences to build a better future. Marcus Braybrooke affords us the opportunity to take a step towards that goal in his compilation of prayers, blessings and meditations, The Bridge of Stars.

The Bridge of Stars is an invaluable tool in seeking to discover what can bind us together as children of one World, one Creator. Providence certainly played her part in the book's timely creation. Now we simply need to build the bridges. It is amazing how many times, as we build from one end, we encounter a stranger building from the other, and, as two worlds connect, we have a pathway.

Marcus Braybrooke, a parish priest in Oxford, England, has spent over thirty years, and many miles, urging the world toward a greater understanding of the need for Interfaith Dialogue. As reader you will enter that dialogue with voices from many sources, spanning many centuries and treating topics common to all. Each voice, or prayer, visually presented in a creative format which enhances the particular theme, will resonnate with the sense of unity which connects us to the Scource. Call your Creator what you may, in this compilation culled from many different traditions, there is no attempt to draw you into one direction or another, but to speak directly to the heart. The Bridge of Stars is a book which speaks to you, not around you; for you, not in place of you. Where so much inspirational literature these days is emotional disguised as spiritual, Bridge of Stars is spiritual to the core. It will lift you, rejoice with you, comfort and console you, and as you find the Creator, whom you name as you will, in the prayerful words of a Hindu or a Buddhist, a Native American, a Moslem, a Jew or a Christian, you will understand and know that I AM.

The selections are beautiful prayers as well as beautifully written poetry. The illustrations are breathtakingly serene. Open to any page and just start reading! The process is refreshingly simple, but relaxing. The book also serves as a great resource for finding the perfect words for expressing your thoughts and feelings. I have found passages appropriate to include on a card to my son's teacher, an admired co-worker, and best friend! The feelings expressed are multi-cultural and timeless. For example, a prayer for forgiveness, written in the 6th century in Persia, is as much relevant today as it was when it was written. 5 out of 5 stars Perplexingly unknown.......2005-09-27

According to Alexei and Cory Panshin, in the critical work The World Beyond the Hill, Star Bridge's genesis goes back to 1944 or so. Jack Williamson, inspired by Isaac Asimov's Foundation stories, decided to do his own "managed history/galactic empire" novel, with the working title of Star of Empire. Williamson had problems making the idea work, so that it took 10 more years plus James Gunn's assistance to finally make a story out of the idea.

And what a story! I first read this novel at the age of 9, just a few years after it came out, and have periodically re-read it every so often since then. I outgrew much of what I read in my teen years and before, but this book is one of those stories that I still enjoy now as much as I did then.

This story succeeds on more than one level. Most obviously, it is a fastpaced adventure story. On another level, it's one of those stories where things aren't quite what they seem at first glance. Or at the second (third? fourth?) glance. That, I think,is what keeps me coming back to this novel -- the thought that I may see something in it that I missed on the previous reads.

One thing that completely perplexes me is how unknown Star Bridge is, even among science fiction fandom. It is in the top rank of Williamson's work (that goes for Gunn, too), yet I find that even big fans of Williamson often have never heard of it. Hopefully there will be enough demand for used copies of this book that someone may do another reprint. I think it's about time -- and it would really be cool if it were to be made into a movie.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Early Williamson.......2005-03-26

A great novel with (at the time) revolutionairy ideas of travel via 'wormholes'. The character is typical of Sci-fi writing of the time, and there is a leading character that has to be an early personification of 'Giles Habbibula'.
Well worth the read, and great book from THE Grand Master of Sci-fi.

5 out of 5 stars One of the all-time great SF books.......2005-02-28

Why has this book never been made into a movie? It has it all...adventure, romance, a Metropolis-like futuristic empire, the idea of near-instantaneous space travel.
Well, that part of the book was probably the inspiration for the original Star Gate movie. But this book's plot was much more coherent than the revolt against the sketchy, androgynous tyrant of Star Gate. The character of Wu is one of the best executed and most thoughtful in the history of the SF genre, IMHO.

5 out of 5 stars This opened the door into hard SF for me.......2000-04-15

I first read "Star Bridge" in sixth grade at the age of 11; I'm now almost 43, and I still hold this as one of the greatest SF books I've read.

Williamson's imagery and wordcraft set the standard for many of today's modern masters. His antihero Horn, the eccentric man-with-a-secret Wu, and his decaying human empire are shown in high relief, and the imagery evoked burns itself into your mind permanently.

Find and read this book; do what you must to acquire a copy, and savor it slowly. Horn's passage through the Tube and hyperspace is one of the most stirring examinations of consciousness I've yet to read; it still moves me.

Find out why one man can move an empire...
