Product Description

Colored Waiting Room is a novel set in contemporary rural Tennessee that poignantly reveals the struggles of a woman to be accepted in the unwavering traditional workforce ranks of a racist employment circle. The author takes the reader on a suspense-filled journey from a fierce beginning to a shocking and unpredictable ending. Injecting murder, corruption, and deceit into the arena of the federal government, the story paints a picture not readily forgotten. The main character explores love, deals with personal weaknesses, and vulnerablity.

The novel describes the struggles of a Black female locked in the grips of the "good ole boy" network. Alberta Graham, the novel's central character, examines the past eight years of her life as she waits for the hours to pass in a long forgotten room at Cherokee Nuclear Plant in rural east Tennessee. Following her as she relives the highs and lows of her life, the reader will cheer her on, cry, laugh, and begin to live the experiences as the story prompts judgment calls. The discovery of an ongoing taxpayer financial burden with government racketeering, as witnessed through the eyes of Alberta Graham, is both disturbing and frightening.

Characters drawn from Southern values and traditions come alive in Chief Ronnie Klein, the domineering power source at the nuclear plant and eventually head of security. Lieutenant Mack Settles and Lieutenant George Lincoln, are two subordinates whose roles help make for interesting contrast. Officer James Patton, the other Black assigned to the security section permanently, becomes involved with Alberta's plight out of racial pride and a need to identify that pride with being a Black man.

Division Chief Dale Warren is sociopathic, domineering and upper management's overseer of the multi-million dollar security operation. Laura James, the security unit clerk, manipulates Chief Klein consistently in order to control him for her own selfish endeavors. The tailored character of Jeremy Chambers, the love interest of Alberta, impacts and shatters the ideology of love and lifetime partnership. Other characters invade an enhance the story as it unveils the drama, laughter, and pain of survival.

As the title indicates, Colored Waiting Room focuses primarily on the submission of one's will. This is a book for both the casual reader and scholars of fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!.......2007-09-16

While attending a book club meeting, I was fortunate enough to meet Patricia Pope, author of "Colored Waiting Room." Colored Waiting Room is a compelling drama that describes the struggles of a black woman locked in the grips of the "good ole boy" network. The character, Alberta Graham, examines the past eight years of her life as she waits for the hours to pass in a long forgotten room at Cherokee Nuclear Plant in rural east Tennessee. Following her as she relives the highs and lows of her life, the reader will cheer her on, cry, laugh, and begin to live the experiences as the story prompts judgment calls. The discovery of an ongoing taxpayer financial burden with government racketerring, as witnessed through the eyes of Alberta Graham, is both disturbing and frightening.

Colored Waiting Room took me on an emotional journey and didn't want to let me go. The racisim and blatant disrespect Alberta suffered was enough to make anyone upset. I believe the Colored Waiting Room was a story that needed to be told so that we can wake up and see that although things have gotten better, we still have a long way to go. I gave Colored Waiting Room five stars because of the boldness and complexity of the story. I recommend this novel because it deals with real life issues, and not everything is wrapped up in a nice pretty bow at the end.

3 out of 5 stars colored waiting room.......2007-01-01

This book reads like a non fiction account of life in rural Tennessee, in the life of a black female officer. It tells the story of Alberta, who dares to wear braids in uniform and stands up to the other officers to don't want a woman especially a black woman with her position there. Alberta endures bigotry, fear, disrespect and fights back respectively, but the waiting game continues. I say it reads like non fiction because a some point this has happened to some black female officer somewhere. The book was well written and a good read. I give the book *** 3 stars.

This Book was absolutely great. It was well written, and loaded with information. The descriptions of the places made the reader think they were actually there, and the details of each character made the reader know them individually. Alberta Graham is a wonderful character, who represents so may people who had to endure racism. Colored Waiting Room was captivating, explosive, enchanting, fascinating, and courageous.

4 out of 5 stars Colored Waiting Room.......2006-03-31

I love this book. The author has a great ability to make you feel like you know the main characters...as if you grew up with them from childhood. Her ability to make the characters vivid and relatable is uncanny. At the end, the author addresses an issue that most Black people must face at some point in their lives. I wish she had delved into that more...maybe an additional chapter or two. I'm very interested in how she would have concluded that issue.

This was a good effort for her first book. I'm sure her next book will have tighter...more cohesive chapters...and address fewer concepts or situations so that the reader can stay focused on a few situations with each character. But overall, this book was pretty good. I love it. It's a nice easy read.

Sometimes a story comes along that grabs you by the heart and doesn't let go until it has taken you on a roller coaster ride of emotions.

Colored Waiting Room is a compelling story of intrigue and the darkness that resides within the souls of people who look normal and unfortunately make Alberta's life hell. We want Alberta to *make* it. But I won't give away the plot... You'll want to savor that yourself. Don't bypass this page turning gem!

5 out of 5 stars Mostly better than the first volume.......2007-08-18

This here's the 2nd collection of the 80s New Teen Titans by Perez and Wolfman. It mostly improves upon the success of the first volume. The art by George Perez seems more George Perez like; but the stories are hit and miss. The best part of this collection is something of an epilogue to the Doom Patrol story line that killed off half of the Doom Patrol. I'm giving this book five stars just for that great story. There's another storyline which has Wonder Girl abducted by the Titans of myth, which is not quite as compelling.

Gene Wolfe's Book of the Long Sun tetralogy ranks as one of the greatest literary achievements of 20th-century science fiction. Litany of the Long Sun, comprising the first two books in the series, is suffused with looming transcendence and theophany. Wolfe takes familiar speculative fiction tropes and embeds them in a tale so complex and wonderful that readers may find themselves wondering whether what they're reading is science fiction, fantasy, or something different altogether. Or whether it matters.

The story of Patera Silk, a devout priest whose destiny is wrapped up with the gods he serves, takes place within the Whorl, a vast, cylindrical starship that has traveled for generations and is crumbling into disrepair. Through a strange and amazing series of events, Silk finds himself descending to base thievery, running afoul of a notorious crime lord, befriending a cyborg soldier, and encountering at least one of the gods of Mainframe.

She shook her head almost imperceptibly. "All that abstinence! And now you've seen a goddess. Me. Was it worth it?"

"Yes, Loving Kypris."

She laughed again, delighted. "Why?"

The question hung in the silence of the baking sellaria while Silk tried to kick his intellect awake. At last he said haltingly, "We are so much like beasts, Kypris. We eat and we breed; then we spawn and die. The most humble share in a higher existence is worth any sacrifice."

But when Silk encounters the Outsider, who may be a God of a very different sort, all his beliefs are shaken to the core, and his life swiftly takes a messianic turn. In a rousing climax, Silk becomes the reluctant leader of a political rebellion against the corrupt Ayuntamiento, who rule the city-state of Viron.

It is not necessary to have read Wolfe's Book of the New Sun series, which takes place many centuries earlier, to enjoy the Long Sun novels, but keen-eyed readers will find many clues as to the origin of the Whorl and its gods in those stories. Further, although Wolfe's reputation for literary precision and trickery is well deserved, the Long Sun series (which continues in Epiphany of the Long Sun) is one of the more accessible places to start appreciating the author's treasures. --Therese Littleton

Book Description

Litany of the Long Sun contains the full texts of Nightside the Long Sun and Lake of the Long Sun, that together make up the first half of The Book of the Long Sun. This great work is set on a huge generation starship in the same future as the classic Book of the New Sun (also available in two volumes from Orb).

4 out of 5 stars took 2 tries.......2007-08-04

It took me two tries, separated by a few years, to get going on this. The first time I tried to get into the book I just didn't click with the rhythm of Gene Wolfe's writing, but the second time I did, and then I couldn't put the book down - zipping through both Litany of the Long Sun (books 1 and 2) and Epiphany of the Long Sun (books 3 and 4). Yes, I actually said zipping. Reading some of the other reviews, including some of those giving this 4 or 5 stars, you might think that this book is going to be a long slog through difficult prose. Once I figured out Mr. Wolfe's style, I had had quite the opposite experience. There's nothing shattering or terribly deep about the philosophies presented in the Long Sun, but the writing is beautiful, and the plot and the character-mix are complex and entertaining. Oreb has become one of my all-time favorite literary characters; we all need a bird like him. The last image presented of him at the end of book 4 of this tetralogy, 'Exodus from the Long Sun,' (calling 'Silk? Silk? Silk?') was haunting and a little heart-breaking. Definitely worth the effort.

3 out of 5 stars First book is good, second a little complicated.......2007-06-26

I read New Sun and then, after 10 years or so got original English edition of Long Sun.

Book begins great and it really provokes some thinking. It is set up in some kinda sci-fi/medieval ambient and I loved first one.

Second book/second half slows down and it happens in tunnels. I hate how underground became generic setting for this genre...

Naturally, after this I took second half of series in my hands.

4 out of 5 stars Sun of an Epic, Part 1.......2007-04-08

I first started reading Gene Wolfe a couple years back when I read his New Sun books. I was impressed by the original tetralogy - The Shadow of the Torturer, The Claw of the Conciliator, The Sword of the Lictor and The Citadel of the Autarch - while I was less awed by his follow-up, The Urth of the New Sun. It was clear, however, that Wolfe is a good writer who understands what makes science fiction/fantasy writing stand out: interesting characterization, exotic settings and well-constructed plots, with an avoidance of the regular genre cliches.

The Book of the Long Sun is another Wolfe tetralogy that demonstrates that a decade after his New Sun books, Wolfe is still in top form. Litany of the Long Sun comprises the first two books of the four: Nightside the Long Sun and Lake of the Long Sun. The volume opens with a young man named Silk getting a divine vision. Silk is a patera - a rough equivalent of a priest - in some sort of far future space colony referred to as the Whorl. This world is clearly artificial and is illuminated by a long glowing light that is the Long Sun of the title.

Although seeming set in the future, in many ways things have regressed technologically, and the Whorl is now filled with city-states that are often at odds with each other. The people worship a series of gods that are vaguely reminiscent of the Greek or Roman gods. In particular, there are nine deities that require worship and a number of minor gods. One such god, the Outsider, is responsible for Silk's vision.

This vision will lead Silk on a series of adventures as he tries to save his manteion (roughly, a church) from purchase by a shady yet wealthy man named Blood. These adventures will teach him much about the nature of his world and the gods that inhabit it.

There is a lot that goes on in this first volume, and the plotting is intricate enough that I have only scratched the surface. Since really each book is merely a segment in the entire story, it is hard to review them (or even Litany) individually; in a way, it is like reviewing individual chapters in a novel. But everything that I've read in this story thus far (that is, the whole Litany), shows that this is another good work by Wolfe, on a caliber with his New Sun works. This, so far, seems to be really good science fiction (with a few dashes of fantasy).

5 out of 5 stars Prime Wolfe!.......2006-09-01

I believe I read a portion of "Nightside" when it first came out and was disappointed with its seeming lack of depth when compared to the "Severian" books. Well, after several years I came across the two volume version of this four book series and gave it another try. Boy, I don't know what I was thinking the first time around. Complex plot, great characters, amazing originality, all of them are here in abundance. Patera Silk is yet another gem of a protagonist. Well worth reading, and a lot of fun to boot!

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2006-03-09

All I can say is that the Long Sun series is told in 3rd person versus the 1st person view of the New Sun. This adds a whole new twist to Wolfe's writing and it's very good. If you liked Severian, I imagine you will like Silk (Patera Silk, the star of the long sun series). Especially because we don't know his thoughts until he thinks them, ie in 3rd person we find out what he's thinking as he does it (after being exposed to Severian's constant speaking of his mind, this is a bit of relief). This makes Silk and the story more like us "regular" humans, those of us without Severian's specific abilities...

3 out of 5 stars A Slow but Promising Start.......2004-03-08

A young priest named Silk is enlightened by a god known only as the Outsider, who burdens him with the task of saving his church from demolition.

Nightside takes place over a mere two days, which inflicts on it a snail's pace and the feeling of floundering in too many details. The act of breaking into someone's mansion took more than half the book. Rituals were described in full, beginning to end. Yes, this book is a set-up for greater things to come, but still suffers from its pace, and probably could have been condensed to half its size. It was also filled with great characters, enigmatic events, bizarre creatures, and "gods" that might not be all they're cracked up to be. I look forward to the remainder of the series.

5 out of 5 stars The first volume of the Book of the Long Sun slowly unravels.......2001-11-07

NIGHTSIDE THE LONG SUN is the first volume of Gene Wolfe's four-volume work The Book of the Long Sun, which is a story of political intrigue, revolution, and Christian allegory set in a starship sent from Earth to colonize a distant planet.Gene Wolfe rose to fame with his magisterial work The Book of the New Sun, which is one of my most cherished books. The Book of the Long Sun takes place, in fact, in the same universe as Wolfe's masterpiece. However, differences abound. The Book of the New Sun is a first-person narrative in which the narrator stands between the reader and a clear view of his world. The Book of the Long Sun, on the other hand, is told in third-person and the setting is richly illustrated by Wolfe's prose. That is not to say that there are no mysteries in the Book of the Long Sun, it is of course a Gene Wolfe novel, but the plot is much more straightforward and clear than in Wolfe's earlier triumph.NIGHTSIDE THE LONG SUN slowly introduces the plot that will later rage through the city of its setting and by the end of the four-volume work utterly change the world in which the characters live. NIGHTSIDE opens with the enlightenment of Patera Silk, an augur (i.e. priest), in Viron, one of the cities within the Whorl, the gigantic starship sent from Urth. The rather pagan inhabitants of the Whorl worship a pantheon of deities based upon the ruler who sent out the starship and his family. Silk's enlightener, however, is an obscure god called the Outsider, because he abides even outside the Whorl, who is quite possibly in fact the Christian God. The Outsider has called upon Silk to save the local church and school, which have been sold for back taxes to a criminal named Blood. Silk, in a bit of bravado, proceeds to break into Blood's mansion in hopes of getting his property back. This attempt at breaking in, along with an exorcism of a bordello, are the sum of NIGHTSIDE THE LONG SUN. It's a slow and simple start, the action of this book takes place over merely two days, but in the following books the pace builds exponentially. The Book of the Long Sun may not be as poetic and full of sophistry as The Book of the New Sun, but it's immensely good reading. Wolfe's use of Christian allegory (much stricter here than in the earlier work), and a plot full of revolution, war, and political mystery is a fine work. After NIGHTSIDE THE LONG SUN, the reader should be voraciously desiring the next book in the series, LAKE OF THE LONG SUN.

3 out of 5 stars Sorry to have the first so-so review, but...........2001-01-04

I write this review after reading the whole series. Perhaps I would have written a more favorable review if I had written it after just reading this volume. The story here plods along very slowly, and may not appeal to anyone who is not used to Gene Wolfe's complex writing. If you want a really good Wolfe series, pick up his "New Sun" books. This one seems as if it hold a lot of promise, but ultimately disappoints.

4 out of 5 stars What an unusual SF book...!.......2000-02-23

This was my first encounter with Gene Wolfe, and indeed it was all I'd been told to expect. While not a whole lot of action takes place in the course of the story (indeed, another, lesser writer might have told the same tale in less than 50 pages), the writing and characterization are such that you simply cannot put the book down. Silk is a remarkably multi-faceted character, exhibiting at turns confidence, doubt, fear, compassion, and naivety. Most enjoyable of all, he's more clever than he tends to let on; on several occasions, the reader wants to shout the answer to a puzzle to Silk, only to find out later that he knew it all along. Masterful writing by Wolfe. Now if only these books weren't so hard to find-- I've gotta read #2!

5 out of 5 stars A Modern Masterpiece.......1999-10-29

Equally as rich as, but far more accesable than, Wolfe's Book of the New Sun.

        Book Description

The politics, educational policies, and social values perpetuated by Christian fundamentalists are exposed in this critical perspective on the religious right's role in American society. Statistics and studies of the movement are offered that provide insight into the causes and characteristics of fundamentalism and its effects on minority groups including women, children, African Americans, gays, and lesbians. Essays from a variety of authors consider the path to theocracy, the effect of the theology of inerrancy on politics, and the state of fundamentalism in the United States after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Extremes of Fundamentalism.......2006-07-30

This is an excellent, well researched and documented primer on the aims and tactics of the "Christian" right wing. I put "Christian" in quotes because I cannot believe that Jesus would be anything but horrified and disgusted with what they are trying to do in his name. How anyone can claim to believe that Jesus was the incarnation in human form of a loving God, while vehemently opposing nearly everything Jesus advocated, is beyond me. But the right-wing "Christian" push to turn America into a theocracy, forcing everyone else to live according to their dictates, is a clear and present danger to our religious freedom that everyone should be aware of. Read this book and encourage your friends to read it!

        2 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking counterpoint.......2006-04-07

I strongly encourage the thoughtful reader to consider this book alongside any of the sloppily-produced, poorly-edited, "these people are attempting to destroy our country" books produced by the far Christian right, for they are of exactly the same genre, and are born of the same unsympathetic fear of the other.

The authors apparently have no interest in understanding the lives and motivations of those whom they condemn; instead we find sweeping descriptions of the destructive intent and power of "Fundamentalists," in which the most extreme criminal acts are held up as representative and on to which are tacked -- an apparent afterthought -- half-hearted disclaimers that maybe this doesn't describe all Christians. The resemblance to similar books decrying the insidious plots of "secular humanists" is really quite uncanny.

This is not to say that the book doesn't contain some useful data and interesting opinions, but the wheat is so buried in a chaff of wild generalizations, unfounded conclusions, and outright factual errors, all couched in prose that often rivals the worst undergraduate essay, that the reader is left not knowing what to trust and what to discard.

This book will meet the needs of those who already believe that all conservative Christians are poorly-educated, sexually-repressed conspirators in a plot to overthrow democracy -- it will not unduly challenge your preconceptions. However, it contributes little to the genuine conversation and understanding that will be required to bridge the divide that such demonizing rhetoric has planted between people of good will on both ends of the political spectrum. If you're looking for a book that honestly represents the fundamentalist perspective, let this pass.

1 out of 5 stars Very 'Michael Moore'.......2005-11-17

I found this book to be based more on emotion than fact. The facts that were used were blown way out of proportion and context. While it is always healthy to look at both sides of the coin - politics included - this book would never give a fair representation of the fundamentalist side, because it is so focused on presenting the conservative view from a Gestapo perspective.

5 out of 5 stars An important message for America at just the right time.......2005-08-28

An important warning of the political forces organizing to turn America into a Christian theocracy at the earliest possible opportunity.

A specialist in legal psychiatry, John M. Suarez,M.D outlines the increased number of attacks on the First Amendment in "The Path to Theocracy." He describes how the First Amendment has saved us from religious war so far and how the most militant forces call openly for war.

The chapter "Inerrancy Turned Political" comes from Herb Silverman, Ph.D., a mathematician who forced the state of South Carolina to make him a notary public despite the fact that he refused to declare a belief in a Supreme Being. Silverman exposes tactics used by the religious right to gain political influence and the damage their victories bring to our public school system. He presents an alarming expose' of the Reconstructionist camp of Christian fundamentalists as he outlines the work of the moral Majority, Christian Coalition, and Catholic League, particularly their grip on the Republican Party.

Edward M. Buckner, Ph.D., executive director of the Council for Secular Humanism, in his chapter, "Winning the Battle Royal," reminds us that "the United States established the first significant secular government designed to lead the first truly secular society in history," and argues that only such a society can offer true religious freedom. As he points out the similarities between Islamic and Christian fundamentalism, Buckner explains why fundamentalism is so dangerous and why we must maintain the secular nature of our Constitution and government.

1 out of 5 stars Lies and bad arguments.......2005-08-04

I have a Ph.D studying the Christian right and this is the worst book on Fundamentalism and the Christian Right that I have ever seen. What is not outright lies are "straw men" arguments meant to make anyone who believes in Christianity look like an idiot. I feel bad for the people who gave it a good review, they have been duped by the authors who are not arguing a case or explaining the Christian Right, they are feeding propoganda for their own side. I was given a free copy of this book and after reading it, I threw it in the trash instead of donating it to a library, it is that bad. Be sure to know something about the author of a book before you buy it, especially on a controversial topics like this one.
