She gets what she wants... but what does she want?.......2004-11-12
Rider Haggard's Cleopatra tells the story of the legendary queen as shown through the eyes of Harmachis, an Egyptian physician and priest of Isis. It is written from the point of view of Harmacis at the end of his life. He is old and recounts his life story. Like so many others he was obsessed with the beautiful Cleopatra, and so he tells her story as much as his.
Unlike most admirers, Harmachis actually gets involved with Cleopatra. She pushes him to reveal secrets of Isis (including the location of hidden treasures of the pyramids) to further her political ends. Throughout the story, the reader is left wondering whether Cleopatra really does love Harmachis. Sometimes she seems only to use him and she does betray him every time. But one has to consider that Harmachis comes from low class parents, so actually ending up with him might not be an option for her. She seems to really love him and maybe she really is trying to arrange things for them. Her power over him is complete, possibly because she doesn't know what she wants.
The setting and story are lavish. After all, this is ancient Egypt, complete with hidden treasures of Isis. At the same time the story is about more timeless issues - love and betrayal and love vs religion. It has the right blend of action, emotion and awesome settings to keep me interested all the way through. And the ancient setting keeps Cleopatra from feeling dated, as do some of Haggard's other novels.
I highly recommend Cleopatra to anyone into 1890's stuff, Egyptian stuff or adventure novels.
The weakness of man.......2001-07-29
_Cleopatra_ is not as strong of an effort as Haggard's more famous novels (She, King Solomon's Mines, etc.) but shows the same themes and concerns that seem to populate most of his narratives. It tells the story of Cleopatra through the eyes of Harmachis, a priest who betrays everything holy for the love of Cleopatra and is himself later betrayed. Haggard's passion for beautiful and fiery women who are somehow beyond the normal laws of society and morality is evident here.
A new light on Cleopatras life.......2001-05-30
I have read a couple of books about Cleopatra and this book by Haggard gives me a new light to things! His story about Harmachis and how he got involved with her gives somewhat a new reflection about Cleopatra. Once you started reading this, you'd definitely won't put this book down. Its sort of a time warp for you would actually get to feel as if you are part of the story! The plot, sceneries depicted-- everything is original and definitely entertaining! A must read for those who is interested with ancient Egypt!

Fun, enjoyable ride.......2005-08-19
Ring of Winter is book number 5 in the Hapers series. The Harpers series is a group of stand alone novels all dealing with the Harpers organization in the Forgotten Realms. You don't necessarily need to read the first book to jump right into the series. The Harpers series is also a good way to get aclamated to the Forgotten Realms, think of it as a test drive for the world if you will.
In Ring of Winter, James Lowder tells the story of a young treasure hunter who's journey takes him half way around the world. The hero faces numerous challenges along the way as he tries to find the myth of the ring. It almost has an Indiana Jones type feel to it, except on a grand fantasy stafe.
I must say, that this book involves two of my favorite all time characters, the talking wombats... what's not to like about talking wombats? :-)
In all honesty, James Lowder proves with this book that he is one of the best Forgotten Realms writters in a long time. The tale he weaves is just a fantastic read. He has a good mix of action, suspense and humor... all combining to make an enjoyable book. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the fantasy genre.
Welcome to the Jungle..........2004-08-08
This is the story of Artus Cimber, explorer, adventurer, historian, and former Harper, as he searches high and low for the Ring of Winter.
The book traces Artus Cimber's journey from the kingdom of Cormyr, to Baldur's Gate, and down the Sea of Swords to the Jungles of Chult in search of the mythical/legendary artifact "The Ring of Winter," which is rumored to provide immortality... at a cost; the coming of a second Ice Age. Needless to say this artifact is something that more than a few people would like to call their own, and so the adventure begins.
The book is a great tie-in with James Lowder's previous book Crusade, so if you can, read them in that order.
The Ring of Winter starts off incredibly well and continues so, up until half way through; enter the talking wombats (!!!), in British accents (!!!), before it picks up again a few pages later, for what ends up being a very good fantasy book. Jim, what were you thinking with the wombats??? And keep those Artus Cimber stories coming!
In short, the book is very well written and the characters really do come alive, so if you like tropical jungles, dinosaurs, exotic goblins, and would like a change of scenery to break the routine without leaving the Forgotten Realms world, try and get your hands on a copy of The Jungles of Chult.
A Little Far Fetched.......2004-03-25
I know fantasy books are suppossed to be in the realm of fantasy. However, I think this one took it a little too far. I mean talking wombats? Not to mention the fact that the books hero "Artus Cimber" always seems to get saved just in the nick of time, no matter what predicament he is in. I know that the main character is not suppossed to die, but he he just doens't seem to be that tough, and merit the respect that everyone gives him. Basically this book is like a lot of fantasy books, where the heroes seem to get through impossible odds without barely breaking a sweat. It is somewhat entertaining, and gave me a little more knowledge about the lands of chult, but if you can't buy it used, don't buy it at all.
A good read.......2002-12-12
Jim Lowder is one of the best authors TSR has ever had. This is a good book, Artus is a cool character. The Ring is a great artifact, and while Chult may not be favorite setting I still enjoyed this book. Check it out.
Indiana eat your heart out!.......1999-11-26
Artus Cimber is the classic do gooder, followed by trusted friends who meet tragic ends. His supposed guardian is turned against him and all seems lost until he finds the ring of winter. Hello! this is the best relic i have read about in awhile. When all this was said and done I applaud Mr Lauder on a job well done. And for the guy who wrote about Kelemvor Lyonsbane... well this is Artus Cimber's story and we don't need a flash back to the God of the Dead all right. Now that Artus has the ring he is a god. metalcam says great book and read it with an open mind not closed.

Superb and unique.......2006-09-29
If only Ms. Bull would write more! Lots and lots more. A stunner of a book, with a premise that at first looks well-used but then turns out to be stranger than you can imagine. And really, really GOOD. The language is amazing, the characters real and intriguing, and every time I finish this I want a sequel. It should be back in print--if The Secret Country trilogy is freshly on the shelves, why not this?
Post Apocalyptic Gender Queers.......2005-12-26
"Bone Dance" is a really great thought provoking book. It's set in a near future post-apocalyptic Minneapolis, and for quite a while it's unclear if the narrator of the book, Sparrow, is hiding something about a mysterious past, or if memories of the past have been obliterated through nefarious means. It's hard to describe, but an amazing read even for those who aren't a fan of sci-fi or futuristic books. I would definitely suggest tracking down this book to read or give to others.
The Friendship of the Soul.......2005-07-07
Ms. Bull does not have very many titles to her credit, but each one of them is very unique, very different from the average run-of-the-mill fantasies that clutter up the bookstore shelves.
Bone Dance starts with a post-nuclear setting, but rather than a world of deserts and a civilization blasted back to stone-age technology, here we still have cities, electricity, even full-flavored showings of old movies and music clips intertwined in the best traditions of artistic DJ's. Of course, the infrastructure that produced the technological goodies needed to do such shows no longer exists, thereby providing employment for Sparrow, our first-person narrator, as he is one of the few that still has the necessary knowledge of electronics to repair this gear when there are the inevitable breakdowns.
Sparrow has a problem, however, of having `blank' spots in his memory, times when he can't remember what he did or where he went, only knowing that where he woke up is far from when his last memory says he was. Finding out the answer to these blank spots involves tarot cards, the Horsemen, the dictator of the city, a search for revenge on the person who helped instigate the nuclear war, hoodoo magic, and a cast of very well realized characters. Each of these characters have their own pasts and problems, and they all grow and change considerably during the course of this book's action. Some of the action is very `unpretty', almost gross, but provides a strong line of plot thread that well illuminates one of the main thematic points here, of the importance of friendship and community and that the means to find these things involves baring your soul a bit to others. The odd meld of magic and technology here is refreshing, with some interesting descriptions of the meaning behind the various tarot cards, something I don't normally subscribe to, but Ms. Bull makes them an integral part of the plot, and here it works well.
A strong book with a taut plot that is not telegraphed, highlighted by characters that are very different but quite recognizable, a setting and a group of ideas that are not just a rehash of stuff seen hundreds of times elsewhere, all are very good. I had some quibbles with some of the minor characters not being presented with enough force to make them memorable when they reappear after fifty page gaps, and I found some of the descriptive work either over- or under-done, sometimes leaving me floundering about just what the scene was or wishing she would get on with the story. These are definitely minor quibbles, however, as the general prose is quite adequate, the story line engrossing, the main characters real. Recommended for all those readers who are tired of crumbling castles and yet another dragon quest.

Unbelievably Good.......2005-06-02
If life held any justice, Emma Bull would be at least as famous and as (presumably) wealthy as Neil Gaiman. Anyone who enjoys his writing will positively revel in hers.
'Bone Dance' first caught my eye as a library book almost ten years ago and it was with vast happiness I bought a used copy from Amazon last summer. And really, it's the PERFECT book to read around St. John's Eve.
The protagonist is Sparrow, a mysterious but deeply engaging character with a shadowy past and a sudden tendency to black out, only to later meet characters who seem to know more about these episodes than poor Sparrow does. The greater plot concerns the Horsemen, supersoldiers created by a now-defunct U.S. government who had no bodies, gifted with the ability to seize any host body and destroy its owner's mind. Sparrow and friends (Sherrea, Theo, and many others, all finely and absorbingly drawn) are now living in a world after the Horsemen caused a nuclear holocaust, where folk magic has new credence and technology is precious.
I can't decide which I like better: the plot(which is dynamite), the characters (all of whom you'd love to spend time with), or the prose itself (witty, sparkling, and apt to make you lose whole hours while reading it). I generally don't go in for a lot of cyberpunk beyond William Gibson, simply because it's usually too invested in its own tragically hip and fiercely cutting-edge coolness to actually entertain the hapless readers who find it, but this is pure quicksilver magic. I'd give it ten stars if I could.
Please reissue this book!.......2004-08-07
"Bone Dance" (along with "Falcon") has got to be one of my favorite all-time books. Emma Bull is an amazingly gifted storyteller with a sure, deft touch. If you haven't yet discovered her, you are in for a treat: complex characters, layered plots, detailed world-building, humor, and, above all, a compassionate yet clear-eyed understanding of human weakness make this an outstanding story, which, in my opinion, far exceeds "War for the Oaks" (perhaps her best-known work.) While "Oaks" is a delightful story, it is in "Bone Dance" that Bull really hits her stride. If you like Lois McMaster Bujold, Diana Wynne Jones, or Tanith Lee, then you will probably like Emma Bull too. This is a book that will haunt you long after you put it down.

Terrible "Updated" Version.......2005-12-07
Who would take the liberty to 'rewrite' someone's words in the name of updating them? Murray is eloquent, and hardly difficult enough to need modernizing. Every page I compare of this update with Murray's original leaves me sorely disappointed. The update removes subtleties, turns Murray's eloquence into cheap language, and sometimes just plain changes the meaning. No one updates Shakespeare. This update only gives a rough idea of Murray's intent, and often changes the meaning to a Gnostic drive for power. To know what Murray really intended, by all means find an old used copy. This is worthless.
WONDERFUL.......2005-12-03

wonderful devotional commentary........2004-06-16
this book isn't an exhaustive commentary but rather a enlightning devotional. Andrew Murray speaks from his relationship with God in the holy of holies, writing about the wonderful truths of hebrews - the rest of God, the new covenant, Melchizidek our great High priest, the holy of holies - all of these truths are the result of the relationship we have with Jesus Christ. Jesus is our rest, He is our high Priest, He is the Holy of Holies - its all about Jesus and the grace which He has lavished on us through the blood of the eternal covenant - "let us be diligent to enter that rest" (Hebrews 4:11), the rest which is the result of the relationship we have with Jesus.

A Perversion of the True Murray.......2002-01-21
This book must surely be the greatest tragedy in the history of Christian publishing. A giant of a man, Andrew Murray, has become the latest victim of a movement that has finally managed (long overdue) to earn themselves a chapter in the much celebrated Kingdom of the Cults. Unbelievable, but true: The Word Faith Movement has decided that Andrew Murray's theology needs correction, and they have put their scissors to one of Christendom's greatest classics. What we are left with is a pale counterfeit of the original work, yet deceptively published under both the name of Murray and the original title. Christians, please don't be fooled. This is not Andrew Murray, but Gloria Copeland's version of what she thinks Murray should have said. In the process of enlisting him as an apologist for their cause, the Copelands have obliterated the true Murray. How they've managed to legalize such chicanery boggles the intellect. The tragedy, of course, is that sincere believers are led to believe they are actually reading Murray. I suggest that those who are interested in protecting the legacy of authors such as Murray, Spurgeon and Nee, do everything in their ability to raise their concerns to publishers, distributors, book shop owners and fellow book lovers.
Hebrews contains incredible promises for our walk of faith........2001-04-09
Andrew Murray explores in depth some the themse he touches on in other books, as he walks the reader through the book of Hebrews. This is a devotional commentary, not simply to increase your knowledge but to lead you to a deeper place of prayer.
Absolutely the best.......2001-02-27
Written in a daily devotional style yet with real depth. I couldn't absorb more than Murray gave at a sitting and was repeatedly amazed at the way he opened the word with both great spiritual insight, intellect and deep feeling. I am eager to read another Murray title.
Powerful, Inspiring, full of knowledge, written with wisdom.......1999-09-05
This is an excellent study book for all those who have a zeal to be closer to God, who desire to know the power of God like never before. There is so much more to knowing and experiencing the power of Christ then most Christians know. This book helps us to better know the ways of God, how we can better serve him, and how we can experience him in the fullness of his power. This book helps to teach us how to be and stay strong and how to keep the joy of the lord within us even in the midst of our troubles that seem so much more intense than ever before. It helps to satisfy the need to know Jesus better!!!!!!!
