Product Description

During World War II, Mildred Gillars was "Axis Sally", the queen of the Nazi propaganda radio broadcasters. Her base of operation was the powerful radio transmitter of the Nazi high command in Berlin. Her sexy voice and cunning messages attempted to collapse the moral of the American fighting men whether they were in a foxhole on the battlefield or a bomber flying high in the sky. But wait!. . . Mildred Gillers was an American, born in Maine, raised in Midwestern Ohio in a middle-income family; she was not even of German ancestry. How did she become the notorious "Axis Sally"? Author M. Williams Fuller takes you on her incredible journey and back. Fuller begins Mildred's story on her first day at Hunter College in New York City, the year is 1925, and she is falling in love with the man who will enter and exit through her life. Each entrance and exit will have a more gripping impact on her destiny. Leaving Hunter College, Mildred had a short stage and film career that put her on the wrong side of the law. With the aid of a friend, Mildred found escape and opportunity in Algiers, later she moved on to on to France. Discovering Paris opened a lifestyle of free-living writers, artists and existentialists. After experiencing a vivacious Europe, Mildred returned home to an economically depressed America. The stock market had collapsed and more than 25% of the nation was unemployed. Soup lines had formed to feed the ever-growing number of hungry and homeless people. With hope and determination and little else in her future, Mildred went back to Europe and again found opportunity, she joined a theatrical company touring the cities of Europe. When the tour ended, Mildred went to Germany, where she found her niche, broadcasting the news and American hit music to English speaking people living in Europe. In a relatively short time, she rocketed to celebrity. All the while, Hitler's world of deception and destruction abound around her.

5 out of 5 stars Axis Sally, Great story of the notorious Mildred Gillars.......2007-04-01

Fascinating, entertaining, historical, thought provoking, all the above plus. This is a totally well rounded story of a woman unwilling to be satisfied with a mundane status quo life. The author had me laughing, crying and wondering all the while what next? My criticism is that I found it difficult to stop reading and get on with my work. I was constantly tempted to turn just one more page

5 out of 5 stars I sincerely recommend this book. .......2006-11-02

Reading Axis Sally, I am amazed at the ability of the author to revive the era and quickly get into the person of Mildred Gillers as she is entering Hunter College as awkward freshman in the fall of 1925. At first, I felt a kinship to Mildred Gillars and her desire to exceed her ordinary birth given fate. As she proceeded to make choices to achieve recognition, I wanted to caution her as to the ramifications of the directions she was taking, but of then, I am only the reader. In the end, the recognition she received far exceeded her wildest expectations or nightmares. It is a magnetizing, story of one of the most notorious women of the 20th century. The author does an outstanding job of bring the people, the times and the events to life.

5 out of 5 stars It's beyond a biography, It's a great story........2005-11-03

I must admit when I purchased the book I was expecting a bland biography of Mildred "Axis Sally" Gillars, but my curiosity of this person was strong. For years, the media likened the deeds of various women to Axis Sally without an explanation of her. Who was she? What did she do? M. Williams Fuller tells us by going beyond the limits of a biography and breathing life into the story with dialogue, and what a wild story it is.

5 out of 5 stars This book will keep your attention........2005-10-30

Sometimes we make terrible errors in judgements especially when driven by the emotions of love; the less fortunate will not survive in this case Mildred Gillars survived, but with consequence. Her whole life seemed to me cast the moment she met the professor of German literature on her first day at Hunter College. Mildred Gillars was to become one of the most infamous women of her era.

5 out of 5 stars Axis Sally should be made into a movie.......2005-10-29

Axis Sally, the story of Mildred Gillars is written like a movie. M. Williams Fuller's description is so vivid, I feel like I'm there. The dialogue brings the laughter, the tears and the sometimes unreasonableness of life to the story. I hope Axis Sally gets made into a movie. I'll be the first in line to buy a ticket.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Bloodthirster of Khorne is the ultimate enemy for Gotrek and Felix.......2007-04-04

Gotrek and Felix join a dwarven expedition to the middle of the Chaos Wastes in the hopes of discovering the lost fortress of Karag Dum. They travel, along with some other interesting characters such as Snorri Nosebitter, in some kind of huge blimp. Somewhat unfortunately (in my opinion) Grey Seer Thanquol and his cowardly lackey Lurk Snitchtongue find their way back into the story.

Full of chaos warriors and beastmen, this book offers the usual dose of dangerous situations for our heroes. Felix has another tantalizing brush with love and Gotrek comes closer than ever to finally achieving his doom. While most of the story focuses in on Felix and his blossoming into a hardened hero himself, Gotrek plays an important role as the focus of ancient prophesies that he knows nothing about. The climax of this one is pretty intense, with some of the heaviest carnage to be found in the series. Interestingly, King doesn't really wrap up the story in this novel, but instead leaves it wide open, demanding a closely linked sequel.

Overall, this book is enjoyable and light. Much like the other slayer novels I've read.

      5 out of 5 stars kick-ass.......2006-02-23

throughly enjoyable reading... i love the way the heroes thrist for death yet never meet it...

4 out of 5 stars King's first Slayer novel is good........2003-04-24

First let me say, I love William King (well not that way). I've been a fan of his since the first Gotrek and Felix story came out in the late 80's. I had always wished King would right a novel about the duo, and now he has.

Some of you may be saying, "but this is his third novel." Not exactly true. True, there are two books in the series before this one, and they are both called "A Gotrek and Felix Novel". However, those books are really short story compilations. With Trollslayer, this is more than obvious. Skavenslayer is less so because all the stories are tied to one another so closely as to make one big story, but I still hesitate to call it a novel. Daemonslayer is one big story, and it's everything you'd expect in a Slayer novel.

Present are Kings excellent characterization and over-the-top fantasy full of carnage and mayhem. In this book, Gotrek battles his toughest adversary to date and probably out of all the books; a Bloodthirster of Khorne (Greater Daemon of immense power). This certainly adds to the excitement and heightens the climax, but your left feeling like, "ok, now what?" Gotrek is now established as pretty much invincible. In the next book he fights a dragon, but so what. That shouldn't be a problem for him right?

My point it, as fun as this book is, it kinda detracts from the series. How much more can Gotrek acheive? Having Gotrek go on to slay Godly foe after Godly foe is going to get tiring in the same way Star Wars novels do. How many times can Luke, Han, and Leia save the galaxy? Don't get me wrong, I still love these books, but how much more can these two do and remain interesting? The scope of Daemonslayer is so huge and epic as it could easily serve as the ending of the series. Thankfully it doesn't, but my point is that the perhaps the scope of this tale was told too soon. The best Slayer story is still Wolfriders (found in Trollslayer) where a band of goblins is made every bit as threatening as an uber-daemon. In fact, it's the only story where Gotrek suffers a permanent wound; the loss of an eye.

The other problem is the direction Felix is taking. Sure it might be natural for Felix to become a hardened warrior in his travels with Gotrek, indeed he'd have to in order to stay alive, but it seems a little soon for that as well. It's also less interesting. Felix becomes more and more like Gotrek, and as cool as the slayer is, it's the contrast between the two that makes it interesting.

Fans of Gotrek and Felix won't be disappointed in this book (new readers need to start with Trollslayer). It's everything a Slayer novel should be, and it's much better than Skavenslayer. Props to Mr. King for successfully adapting his amazing adventures to long form.

      5 out of 5 stars A delightful romp.......2002-05-31

Although this is the third installment in the series (after "Trollslayer" and "Skavenslayer"), this was my first introduction to the dynamic adventuring team of Felix and Gotrek. Felix is a human youth who has pledged himself to follow on and record the daring suicidal quest of his partner Gotrek, a dwarf who has done something so bad in his life that he has sworn himself to become a "slayer" and die in glorious battle against evil in redemption.

I bought this book in an airport bookshop because I was going to be taking a long and dull plane ride and wanted some light reading. I ended up enjoying this book so much that I could not put it down and found my flight was over in no time.

This book continues plot threads begun in previous installments such as the pesky Skaven who continue to dog their trail. But this one takes the wayward pair into the deepest, darkest perils of that grim and foreboding land stretching out endlessly to the north of the Warhammer world, the Chaos Wastes (I personally like to think of it as the southern edge of Mordor ;) )

This book is perfect for those like myself who could never get enough of Tolkien and longed to visit again that world populated by dwarves, elves and dark and evil creatures. If you're looking for "serious" fantasy with deep character development and profound messages you should probably look elsewhere, but if it's entertainment you want, this book delivers. (Don't want to spoil anything, so just let me say that this book had a great climax.)

I think that this work succeeds because King has no pretensions and does not try to make it anything more than what it is -- pure, enjoyable entertainment.

I'm happy to see that further adventures of this fun pair and their indispensible sidekick, fellow slayer dwarf Snorri Nosebiter (love that name!) are continuing to come out, and I look forward to reading them all.

5 out of 5 stars Second "beast" book in the series :).......2001-04-29

Set in the Warhammer Universe, the series features Gotrek and Felix. Gotrek is a dwarf seeking a noble death as a slayer, the price paid by a dwarf who has done something terribly wrong. Felix, a journalist saved by Gotrek, follows the slayer, aiding him, chronicling his way to his noble doom. In this novel, they face a series of adventures full of blood and gore, full of battles and confrontations.

5 out of 5 stars The best book about Mary of Scotland.......2007-07-11

After reading this book, I was so facinated by Mary of Scotland that I read every book about her that I could get my hands on, both fiction and non-fiction. "Immortal Queen" was still the best of them all. I have probably read it 6 or 7 times. Unfortunately, I lost my paperback copy. Hopefully, I will be able to get it from an online book vendor because I would love to read it again.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books, fiction or non-fiction, about Mary Stuart! .......2006-10-04

I came upon this book at a library completely by accident. It is a historical novel about Mary Stuart, starting with her life in France as a child and ending with her execution. It is extremely well written and accurate, as far as I can tell. It reads like a very good novel and draws you in to a point where you don't want to put it down - even though you know what's going to happen. It gives great insights into Mary's life and personality. It actually made me feel somewhat sympathetic towards Mary (which I didn't prior to reading this book) - at least it made me sort of understand where she was coming from and why she did the things she did. IMO, this is one of the best books, fiction or non-fiction, I ever read about Mary Queen of Scots!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic of Historical Fiction.......2003-01-22

Although it is a work of fiction that was first published nearly fifty years ago, "Immortal Queen" still ranks as arguably the finest book ever written on the controversial Mary Queen of Scots. The novel is beautifully written and better researched than most biographies, but what truly makes this book such a classic is Byrd's insight into Mary's enigmatic personality. The psychological portraits of Mary and her star-crossed soul mate, the Earl of Bothwell, are the most fascinating and plausible ever written, and illustrate the Scottish Queen and her times better than a boatload of Antonia Frasers could ever hope to do. For anyone who wonders what Mary "was really like," this is the book to read!

5 out of 5 stars MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS...MORE WOMAN THAN QUEEN.......2002-11-21

This is a stirring, well written work of historical fiction about Mary, Queen of Scots. Drawing a three dimensional portrait of this tragic queen, whose reign was all too short, the author sets the mood for the turbulent time and place that was sixteenth century Scotland, replete with intrigues and almost unimaginable skulduggery. It was there that the beautiful Mary was to confront a certain duality in her nature that would see her rule Scotland with her heart, rather than with her head.

Mary was a woman who had the capacity to enslave men's hearts with her luminous beauty and inspire great loyalty in her friends with her innate charm and kindness. She went to Scotland to reclaim her throne after the deaths of her husband, Francois, the King of France, and of her mother, Marie de Guise, who had been Regent of Scotland on Mary's behalf.

In protestant Scotland, Mary was to be confronted with fire and brimstone preacher, John Knox, an ardent calvinist, who would brook no tolerance towards papists. Mary, an ardent catholic and well educated woman, wanted everyone to worship as their conscience dictated. Her benevolent posture and entreaties for religious tolerance fell upon the deaf ears of the rigid John Knox, a fundamentalist fanatic of the worst sort, who would prove to be the bane of Mary's existence.

Moreover, her older half-brother, James Stuart, was a cold and calculating man of great ambition whose bastardy was the only thing standing in his way of claiming the crown of Scotland for himself. The book reveals his perfidy and the machinations that he set into play in order to obtain by stealth and intrigue what was Mary's by right. He would secretly work with the English, as well as with the Lords of the Congregation of Scotland, to ensure that he would eventually be the power behind the throne.

Meanwhile, Mary would enter into a disastrous marriage with Lord Darnley, a dissolute, though devastatingly handsome, catholic member of the English nobility. This marriage that was to set the stage for a number of violent, heinous acts that were to traumatize Mary and set her upon a course for which there would be no turning back. This most unhappy queen would ultimately give birth to their son, James, the future King of Scotland, under the most difficult of circumstances.

Her relationship with dashing James Hepburn, the Earl of Bothwell, her third and last husband, would prove to be her undoing. The book explores this relationship in great detail, in all its tumultuousness and passion. It delineates the events that led up to their marriage, and Mary's own complicity in them. Eventually, the decisions that Mary would make at this difficult time in her life would render her the captive Queen of Scots and set her on the royal road to Fotheringay Castle in England, where she would be sentenced to death by her wily cousin, Elizabeth I.

The author's interpretation of the major events in Mary's life makes for fascinating reading, as Mary comes alive on the pages of this book, a compassionate and vibrant, flesh and blood woman. It is simply masterful storytelling at its best. Readers will find themselves riveted to the pages of this beautifully written, well researched work of historical fiction. This is a book that even the most discerning reader will enjoy.

The book describes the life and times of Aristotle. He was a
student in Athens. He pondered important questions on the
evolution of the universe. At one point, he tutored Prince
Alexander-son of Philip of Macedonia. Aristotle dissected
mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and invertebrates. He studied
formal logic and classifications of things into species,
genus and larger genus categories. This is an excellent reference
                work for history buffs.

In doing research on Aristotle, I found this book to be very informative. It gave his history, the works he'd done, how he had gotten started, about his family, basically wanybody that had to research on him should have gotten this book to use. Thank you for carrying it.

This book is about Archimedes' life. He found out how to measure a circle and the principle of buoyancy. He invented the Archimedes' screw. He moved a ship full of cargo with one hand and a machine he built. And he did all this without electricity. I think that you will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great little book.......2007-07-05

My 12 year old and then my wife have read this nifty little book before I got to read the father's day present. I generally like less-than-one-hour biographies with pictures, particularly of inventors.
Great book for readers at 4th grade level and above.
For adults, if you admit to liking cliff notes, I would recommend this book on Archimedes first, before buying something more scholarly.

Placing scientific theory in historical context is a concept that sounds dreadful. My children loved it. They adore the comic stories of Archimedes. My eight year-old son couldn't put it down. As a parent of a boy to 'hates to read,' it was AMAZING to hear my son giggling and laughing out loud while studying history and science on his own. What was even more thrilling, was listening to him apply the knowledge to everything from playing with Knex to a catapult.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Greats.......2006-11-25

Like others, I read this to my homeschooled children. After reading this book, I probably appreciated Archimedes more than they did. For adults and children alike, this is a great introduction to one of the world's (not just the ancient world's) analytical thinkers. This book presents a good mix of scientific education and humanizing biography. We learn that Archimedes died too soon as the result of a stupid misunderstanding, and the world was denied the other scientific advances that he could have given us.

5 out of 5 stars Do Not Hesitate to Buy This Book!.......2005-09-30

I have had an interest in buying this book for many years. It is recommended in virtually every reputable catalog. It just always seemed like when essential schoolbooks were purchased, it didn't make sense to purchase a book about just ONE person. Well, that was a gigantic mistake on my part. The accomplishments of Archimedes made him one of the most important founders of science. This captivating book tells the story of Archimedes life AND gives vivid imagery to his accomplishments through simple, effective text and delightful illustrations. From my 3rd grader to my 10th grader, they all eagerly finished the book with enthusiastic comprehension. Of course, the "Eureka" story stood out to all, but other concepts such as levers and water displacement were covered in a way that brought clarity to those scientific principles. So this book is not about one man, but a plethora of important scientific observations.

                        5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Reminder to God's People-the Jews!.......2005-10-24

Messianic Jews will be refreshed and find much food for thought in Telchin's book. He has a unique perspective and offers insights into God's divine purpose and will for His Beloved, Israel. I read this book from cover to cover in one day, it was simply delicious reading and reminded me of the power of God to save souls, Jews and Gentiles alike. This work is also extraordinarily easy for the layman to comprehend. Terrific book!

1 out of 5 stars Typical Christian misinformation.......2003-06-07

Mr. Telchin's book is a sad read, as it promotes the standard supercessionist replacement theology that the Gentile church fathers began. Bottom line, if God abandoned His promises to Israel, in any way, Christians have no hope for God's faithfulness to them.

5 out of 5 stars Truly an eye-opener for Jew and Gentile!.......2000-07-20

As a Jew, I believe Abandoned portrays a very accurate picture of how Jewish people were misled regarding the Messiah. When I see such vacant arguments presented by others such as "A Jewish person would not believe in Jesus", it is clear how desperately a book like this is needed.

                        1 out of 5 stars who is a jew?.......2000-04-28

one of the few things upon which Jews across the spectrum from the most orthodox to the most liberal can agree is that a person who believes in Jesus - that this man is the Messiah - such a person is NOT a Jew.

I fear that sincere, good-hearted people may be misled by a book such as this one. A Messianic "Jew" may know technical details of Jewish practice, may even have been a practising Jew at some point in his/her life - but the perspective of such a believer should not be mistaken for insight into Judaism or Jews who maintain their belief in their tradition. Such a person certainly has a faith tradition, but it has nothing to do with Judaism.

One should always do one's best to behave with tolerance and understanding to all of differing faith traditions. What a book like this perpetuates is NEITHER tolerance NOR understanding, but rather a total lack of respect for Jews and Judaism. What I find particularly preposterous is that a book expressing what appears to be a strain of Christian theology is to be found in this Amazon catalogue when browsing in the Judaism section. For Messianic "Jews" and those interested in their beliefs this book may be one you wish to read. For those with a genuine interest in Jews and Judaism, may I suggest you look for books by authors such as Eugene Borowitz, Martin Buber, Mordechai Kaplan, Louis Jacobs, Rachel Adler, Maurice Lamm and Abraham J. Heschel just for starters!

Fine if you are a non-jew. However, the Torah clearly defines the role of the Jewish people in this world as handed down by Hashem at mt sinai: Teshuva - To repair the world. To do mitvahs and be a light unto nations. Read a book or books from a real Jewish point of view, eg, The Committed Life by Rebetzin Esther Jungreis
