Against the spare landscape of new lesbian fiction, the stories in Salt Water stand out as unusually distinguished and affecting--realistic portrayals of longing and disconnection between women. Award-winning author Barbara Wilson was a cofounder of Seal Press and winner of a 1998 Lambda Literary Award for her memoir, Blue Windows. In this new collection, she traces meetings of mind and body, for the most part with sober detachment, but sometimes with unexpected humor. In "Is This Enough for You?" Wilson tracks the rapid escalation of a "conference crush." The securely coupled Ellen finds herself attracted to a fellow teacher named Nan, also in a long-term relationship. In the space of a few hours, Ellen moves from a calm awareness that Nan was "becoming beautiful in her mind" to a conviction that Nan was "one of the most attractive women she'd ever met." And despite their attempts to be good, despite their firm resolutions, their bodies persist in bringing them together, "like two dogs their owners are trying to pry apart." Seriously good fiction from a seasoned writer. --Regina Marler
Customer Reviews:
A good work of fiction.......2000-04-18
I really liked the stories in this book, especially the first one, "Salt Water," and "Suit of Leather," one of the rewritten fairy tales. Most of the stories are quite sad, dealing with the loss of love or two people never really coming together, such as "Salt Water." That held-back emotions and isolation are represented through the figure of the German woman in this story is perhaps a bit of cliche, but the ways in which the American woman learns about loneliness as a part of life and partially changes her outlook on relationships though this encounter still comes across as convincing. "Suit of Leather," then, is much more upbeat and romantic. All the stories taken together, I would say that they represent the many painful and wonderful facets of love relationships, which the author presents in a profound and touching way.
A mix of good and boring stories.......2000-04-17
There are nine stories in this book, ranging from only a few pages long to over 100. The title story is the longest; in my opinion it was longer than it needed to be. The story is about a woman's infatuation with a German painter, but I found myself wondering what exactly attracted her to this woman so much. I was never sure what was going on in the relationship. Maybe that was intentional, though -- maybe the confusion is the point. The shorter stories in parts 2 and 3 were better, I thought. Part two covered a range of themes, from domestic abuse in "We Didn't See It", to the generation gap and disillusionment in "Archaeology". Personally, I think Part 3, with the rewritten fairy tales, was the best part of the book. The earlier stories, especially the first, seemed kind of drawn out and the characters never changed. If you've heard the old saying that the two kinds of endings are "realize" and "fails-to-realize", most of these are the latter. The characters never seem to grow or change.

Book Description
Crossing the Pacific Ocean from Hawaii to Canada against the prevailing wind can be a challenging voyage. Imagine the passage in November, with two unknown crew members and an unfamiliar boat disintegrating around us, and the stage is set for Salt Water Rain. The wild wonders found only far at sea will transport the sailing novice and rekindle buried memories for the initiated. Linda's first book is a compelling and moving story of one boat that made it back.
Just barely.

Book Description
After Iraq there is a lull, and then the opening stages of the Third World War. Hundreds die in the Indian parliament in Delhi, the president of Pakistan is assassinated, and a U.S. military base is hit by a North Korean missile. America and Britain discover chilling links between the attacks, but U.S. President Jim West wants to avoid another war. No one is yet aware that the war is already unstoppable. Detail by authentic detail, Humphrey Hawksley chillingly captures the unthinkable—a world speeding towards its own destruction.

Very Easy Read - More like a Movie Script.......2006-08-19
Excellent depiction of how WWIII might start. Very accurate on new technologies and diplomatic machinations. Other reviews on Amazon were on point. The book reads very much like a movie script--it could be easily adapted to a film which I would certainly like to see. I believe the writer intended this to be a movie as the story line is very current and realistic.
Is this the same Hawksley!?.......2006-03-30
Have to admit, I wrote a scathing review for Dragon Strike and with good reason, it had a lot of techinal mistakes, and was a dry read overall.
So with a bit of trepidation, I picked up The Third World War. To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. This book is up there with the best efforts of Clancy (Red October, Red Storm Rising) and Bond (Red Phoenix, Cauldron).
It has been a few months since I read it, and I was so moved by the story I was going to write a review then, but put it off until now.
Even though the story is not fresh in my mind, I can say that I was literally riveted all the way throughout, and the mistakes that plagued Dragon Strike were not present at all.
The story is gripping, and disturbing, from beginning to end. You are pulled right in as we globe hop from flare-up to flare-up, as events spiral completely out of control.
And the ending, well let's just say it left me chilled, and very few books have managed to accomplish this.
For any fan of the geopolitical/technothriller genre, this is a must read IMHO, and you will not come away dissapointed!
A brilliant War Novel!.......2005-10-17
I am flabbergassed why this novel has not had wide distributuin in the United States. I got it on Thursday and with a busy schedule just finished on Sunday Night. The way it is written is engaging and realistic; and very cautionary. It crystalizes the geopolitical relations we have today, and each countries agenda when looked at in a historic context are no relationships at all. The actual war is very realistic as modern terrrorist incidents and experimental Rouge Nation missile tests touch off a conflagaration. This book is well written, suspenseful and very entertaining. It is also realistic and frightening because the scenario centers around South Asia and the Far East, which in terms of international competition are violent and on the rise. There needs to be a publisher that can pick this book up and distribute in the USA, a must read for gobal war watchers! As good or better than Arc Light which up to this point was one of my must read novels.
"Free Market, you're on your own.".......2005-06-03
Hawksley is by turns brilliant, earnest, insightful, and frustrated. The eye and ear of a knowledgeable World Correspondent for disasters in the making calls out loud and clear. If an economic concept creates opportunities for man's deadly sins to play themselves out with horrific consequences, then The Third World War sets about showing us the possibilities. Hawksley expertly examines the roles of such things as chance, betrayal, confusion, greed, arrogance, misunderstanding, technology, against the backdrop of the Free Market notions which have no definable center. "If you lose India, you lose" says one character. "And if China withdraws support?" says another. "It is more complicated than that." Perhaps this is key to his view of potential cataclysm. Driving the text of The Third World War is Hawksley's seasoned, global experience of complexity, error, the role of communications and communicators, the narrow edge of facts known in time by decisionmakers. This is not a rousing tale for the adventurer in us. It is a call to thought and leaves us wondering why the global political/industrial complex in which we live has so few failsafe options. Common sense? Hawksley seems to say that no longer exists locally or globally. The Third World War is a provocative, timely and urgent read. To say it is 'chilling' is an understatement. It should be read inside the Beltway, at Downing Street, from Beijing to Geneva, from Singapore to Delhi, from Stockholm to Tokyo and Seoul. Weeping and flailing of hands is not enough. This is a call to action and cooperative action at that. Or as Hawksley intimates, is it more complicated than that?
Great Read !!!!.......2005-05-31
Simply amazing book, it puts you in touch with the realizm and fackness of world politics. recomend that book to your friend or use it against your enemy. Hopefully Mr. Hawksley will have more books coming.

A Family Favorite.......2007-08-30
I have purchased this CD set as gifts for newborns in the family and the mothers have thanked me repeatedly for giving them such a delightful gift. Their babies were soothed and calmed by the music and both mothers have mentioned how it calms them, too.
Not What I Thought I was Getting.......2006-07-23
I received a LullaBible (book & 2 CDs) as a shower gift, and have loved it. But I just ordered two of these for friends, and they came without any CDs. No music - just the hardcover book. The reviews on this page remark on how wonderful the music is, but that version isn't currently available, and this site doesn't specify that the music isn't included. So watch out!
LOVE IT.......2002-11-06
i got this as a gift and i bought 2 more for two special friends....my baby listens to this the entire night when i put her to bed. moms im telling you are gonna love it
LullaBible - I love it!.......2002-09-19
This book and the cd's that are included allow you some of the most relaxing time. You can put the cd on at night with the volumn down low, and just drift off to sleep in God's presence. This item is for Mother and Baby and both will enjoy it for many years to come. I buy it for baby shower gifts and the recipient has always been very pleased.
I'll probably be listening to this when I am old and grey. Oh yeah, they say once and adult, twice a child - oh well - it's good easy listening - enjoy yours.
A Wonderful Gift for Mom & Baby.......2001-04-28
This is a beautiful book and CD combo. The book is beautifully put together, and the songs are just as beautiful. The book contains sheet music, so you could even play it on the piano or another musical instrument if you wanted to. The songs are made from stories in the Bible, starting at Genesis and ending in Revelation. A great gift created especially for mothers and babies. Stephen Elkins also put together the "Word & Song Bible", which is just as great. Check out that one too!
Book Description
Stephen Elkins, creator of the favorite Word & Song Bible, now presents The LullaBible Storybook for babies ages 0 to 3. Brightly colored illustrations of modern day babies and their stuffed animal toys are matched with simple retellings of classic Bible stories about Noah and the ark, Jonah and the great fish, Daniel and the lion's den, David the shepherd boy, and more.

CD a Real Plus.......2007-08-09
My grandson enjoyed the stories in this book but just fell in love with the CD that was included. For weeks he went to sleep listening to it and told me he wished it would play all night and wake him up in the morning.Angels Watching over Me was his favorite. I decided to buy another one for the next baby gift I needed, because it sparked his interest in spiritual things.

Sing your child to sleep with these twenty-three Bible stories set to the tunes of traditional lullabies. Look also for the companion Lullaby Bible audio.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for infants and young children.......1999-06-06
Nice pairing of Bible stories and familiar lullaby tunes. I sing the lullabies to my infant daughter; my 4-year-old son enjoys hearing the stories sung or read as poetry and he likes recognizing the Bible stories he has learned. Especially good choice if you find traditional words to lullabies a bit harsh for children's ears.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Lullabies for your Little One.......2000-07-25
Lullabies for Little Hearts is a wonderful collection of Christian lullabies designed for young children and their parents. The book's illustrations characterize each song, and the melodies of the lullabies are included via a vocal score in the back of the book. The audio tape that accompanies the book highlights each of the book's lullabies, sung by Carol Smith on one side and the instrumental versions on the other (so Mommy or Daddy can sing baby to sleep on their own). The messages taught in these lullabies are messages of faith, trust that God loves us and answers our prayers, and reminders that we can pray at any time to a loving God who always listens.
This is a must for any new parent who wishes to instill their faith in their children.
