A complex, compelling read.......2000-12-03
Becker's Bronstein's Children is (to use a cliche) a compulsively readable narrative. Becker dramatically illustrates the complex relationship between the older and younger generations of German Jews--the older having lived through Hitler's Final Solution and the younger not understanding why the past constantly haunts them. The chapters alternate between the past and the present, showing that history pervades the very being of those Jews living in Germany after the horrors of World War II. The past is omnipresent both for those who lived through it and those who did not but must live with its consequences and try to understand it.
A True Disappointment.......1999-09-30
Becker, who is known for the book Jacob the Liar, starts out with a fascinating premise: a son of a Holocaust survivor, residing in E. Germany, finds that his father and some friends are holding a former concentration camp guard a prisoner in a cabin. It is the 1970's, and the son wrestles with this information. What, if anything, should he do? Unfortunately, the premise is the only worthwhile thing about his book. It just does not deliver. The characters, especially the son, is superficial, not drawn with much, if any, depth. I couldn't figure out why the son even cared about what his father was doing; he didn't seem to care about much else. This book was a real disappointment.

Book Description
Art teacher Mira Fenn's life was curiously lacking in color until the day she learned of a mysterious inheritance from her birthmother--a long-abandoned house in New Mexico. Dim childhood memories begin to brighten in Mira's mind--her colorfully exotic mother, the curiously silent women who were her mother's servants. Returning to New Mexico, Mira discovers that the house is a faded thing, looked after by the charismatic Domingo Navidad. But when Mira dreams of her childhood home, it is a riot of color--and she and Domingo soon set to work to bring her dreams to life. Color brings more than just an old house back to life. The bright paint Mira applies to wood and plaster seems to reach into her soul, to awaken powers trapped in a decades-long slumber. The silent women reappear, carrying with them a great secret. Convinced her mother is still alive, Mira searches for her, journeying through a sea of light and color to a time and place far from her own. Who and what she finds there will alter her world forever.
Customer Reviews:
SUPERB STORYTELLING . . . UTTERLY ORIGINAL.......2007-06-15
This is hypnotic, completely fresh, like nothing I've encountered before. Not being an "urban fantasy" buff, I tackled CHILD OF A RAINLESS YEAR straightforwardly, as a yarn, as a novel, as literature. On these grounds I was amazed at how it pulled me along - subtly, steadily, without hokey outbursts of violence or hysteria. Its mysteries and shadows kept gathering in the calmest, most offhand way and I kept following eagerly after. Surprisingly, the story's almost a third over before there's a whiff of the preternatural: a numinous figure suddenly appears and disappears in two brief sentences. And by that point it seems perfectly normal and credible.
In short this is superb storytelling. It draws you on with its pacing and timing of uncanny revelations - you meet languorous Pablita, long gone but still alive...you learn the difference between kaleidoscopes and teleidoscopes...you cross the hazy boundaries of "the liminal realm"...and finally you crack the shifting mysteries of Colette - diva, predator, and the motor that drives the whole story. Her middle-aged daughter Mira tells the tale and their great showdown absolutely justifies the buildup: once again, it's completely fresh, literally marvelous - a whirlpool of colors and galloping rhythms. And the colors swallow the devouring mother, not the other way around: even an adult child can face down a controlling parent and break free. Yet the book ends - how else? - calmly, offhandedly, credibly.
So CHILD OF A RAINLESS YEAR is faultless on its own terms and by its own inner rules. As a yarn it's gripping, as a novel it's poignant, and as literature it's an utterly original addition to the coming-of-age classics. Meaning, put it on the shelf between HUCKLEBERRY FINN and THE SECRET GARDEN.
Excellent and lovely read - not for those wanting "brain fluff"!.......2007-06-09
Not having read any other of Lindskold's works, I picked up this book on a whim based on the front cover quote by Publisher's Weekly: "Reminiscent of Charles de Lint..." As Mr. de Lint is my favorite author, that was enough for me, even before reading the quote from him inside: "I loved everything about this book."
And so did I.
First, I want to say that this book should be read when you have the time to really relax, to focus on what the story is showing you. This is not a quick and easy read - take your time. I know that in this age of hurry-hurry for gratification sometimes that's difficult, but this book is worth it.
I note that other reviews say the story moves too slowly, leaves too many unanswered questions. My response is that I feel "Child of a Rainless Year" flows at exactly the right pace for the growth of the story and characters.
As far as unanswered questions goes... well, I know that while reading the book I spent a good amount of time (when not literally reading) thinking about what I'd read, learning interesting things about the dimensionality of the characters and what it - and they - represented, and actually learning a fair amount about myself and my own experiences in the process. This is a work that is *rich* with symbolism, and lot of what you learn in the story is through the growth and direct experiences of the characters as it progresses. If you didn't learn answers you wanted, then either 1) neither did the characters in the story, or 2) you were skimming over the symbolism, possibly because it's a deeper work than you'd expected.
This is a beautiful book.
Beautiful!.......2007-01-14
What a lovely novel!
I was unfamiliar with Ms. Lindskold's work -- I picked this up on a whim in the bookstore, largely due to the comment by Charles de Lint inside the cover. I always love his work, so I thought it was worth it to take a chance on an author who's work he likes. I'm so glad I did! I just odered five more of her novels and can scarcely wait for them to arrive.
Mira is a quietly compelling protagonist -- totally captivating. Her story drew me in gently but inexorably; I became unable to put it down. It's lyrical, magical, yet utterly and resolutely real.
Elegant like de Lint's work, intelligent like Sherri S. Tepper's writing, with characters I like so much I hated to finish their tale -- this is a great read.
pulls you in and doesn't let go.......2007-01-02
This was another wonderful read from Ms. Lindskold. I had read the first three of her "Wolf" books, and thought this one also sounded intriguing; it certainly was! The book does start out slowly (while reading the first few chapters, I told my husband it was a "quiet" book), but "slowly" absolutely does not equate to "boringly". It establishes Mira's odd circumstances and personality from childhood, and as the book develops further, you understand why some of the seemingly innocuous events (such as getting her first box of crayons) are actually pivotal. I don't want to discuss much of the plot, because some of the events were so fascinating when they happened, I don't want to spoil the fun for anyone else. I literally could not stop reading this book until the last page; it's lucky I started it on a weekend, or I'd have been tempted to call in sick so I could finish it! As others have mentioned, it could have a sequel to explore some facets (for example, who - or what - exactly are the silent women?), but I thought the ending was very emotionally satisfying just as it is. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants something unusual and captivating.
great premise, slooooow execution........2006-09-12
I tried very hard to like this book, but I simply didn't like the author's plodding writing style. She spells everything out - and I mean everything - and it takes her five paragraphs to say what could be said in one sentence. She makes everything, including magic, sound dull and boring. I ended up skimming most of the book because I did want to find out how the book ended, but it was slow torture getting there.

It Hums.......2003-12-05
And a happy Tenth Anniversary to "The Left-Handed Hummingbird", which was released a decade ago this month and made a big splash on the Internet. Rightfully so.
I picked up "Hummer" again for the first time in years and years, after a recent viewing of "The Aztecs" -- a 1964 "Doctor Who" adventure which is partly the inspiration for Kate Orman's debut novel. Indeed, the parts of "Hummer" which return the 7th Doctor (and Ace) to 15th century Mexico display a marvelous combination of action and historical detail. The segment begins with the Doctor attracting attention to himself by juggling in the marketplace... and ends with a barrage of corpses. While "The Aztecs" is a prime representative example of early "Doctor Who" (and has a relatively low body count), "Hummer" was "Doctor Who' at its best 30 years later, and the high body count is suited to the novels of its day.
At the outset of her professional writing career, Orman established a rhythmic routine, introducing with both the Doctor and the villain (Huitzilin, the living Aztec god of war) in the very first scene. After a series of dramatic psychic attacks, the story steps back for some well-written exposition. This alternating pace escalates over the rest of the novel. After the Aztecs are left behind, the TARDIS travels to hippie London in late 1968, an overly-dirty New York City in December 1980, and finally, to the last hours of the Titanic.
Also pioneered here in the books is the old-time fanfic concept of "hurt/comfort", in which the lead character is alternately brutalized and cuddled. Here, Ace, by turns, stabs the Doctor in the chest, and gives him a back massage. I can't say this technique was well-used -- it would be taken to rather silly extremes a few books down the road -- but it works in its initial outing.
Another welcome feature in the prose is the author's own personal interests -- making this a rare example of a "Doctor Who" story that actually inhabits its 1993 setting. Characters watch reruns of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" -- in Spanish. There's more use of the Beatles than "Doctor Who" had seen before, or would see since. There's a strong gun-control argument made throughout, including a pointed barb at Ronald Reagan. There are continuity references to other "Doctor Who" TV stories ("Death to the Daleks", "The Pirate Planet") which aren't integral to understanding the book, but provide an extra frisson if you remember them.
And then there is, of course, the research. In another neat narrative trick, the Doctor and Ace's journey to Mexico is intercut with scenes of the Doctor's other companion, Professor Summerfield, sitting in a library researching Aztec culture. The library segments actually increase the tension in the companion historical scenes. This is not an easy trick to pull off. Similarly, the Titanic sequence is intercut with authentic scenes set in the Titanic's telegraph room. The Doctor carries on board with him a typed list of the names of those who survived the disaster -- a wonderfully human touch.
"The Left-Handed Hummingbird", with all of the above, is a comparatively short 264 pages. There's horrific violence and great small moments of humanity. The only "dip" in the book's comes after the first 100 pages, with the introduction of a Dooctor-hating UNIT lieutenant, interruping the frenetic Aztec segment and leading into the slightly less interesting London sequence.
However, this is a book told with real passion for the historical and the temporal. In spite of the body count, it's got a boatload (sorry) of images to remember. Feathers growing out of the possessed Doctor's hair. The child's doll that improbably survived the Titanic's sinking. And the stunningly well-placed quote from "Hotel California".
The One With The Funny Title And The Silly Cover.......2002-10-14
THE LEFT-HANDED HUMMINGBIRD is one of the few Doctor Who books that I've read multiple times. It's one of my favorites and never disappoints. It feels different from a lot of the books surround it in the series, and given the differing styles of the NA authors, that is saying quite a bit.
"Gritty", "realistic" and "intense" are the words that come to mind first when thinking about this book. The characters are certainly put through hell, but it never feels gratuitous or unnecessary. Their suffering isn't approached one-dimensionally, as the ordeals that our friends are put through actually reveal a lot about how their characters work. It's a bit of a cliché to say so, but we learn about fictional characters when we see them put through the wringer. It's not so much that we see people here who are scared, but that their fear is portrayed in a realistic way. There is no false bravado or boring heroism. When people stand up against the odds, it actually means something.
The story is relatively fast-moving. I was amazed at how much had happened before I had even got to page fifty. The plot is perhaps a little more complicated than it really needs to be, but I found that to be enjoyable, so I can't complain too much. It all fits together logically and satisfactorily. No cheap short cuts are taken, so despite the different timelines and detailed plot strands, everything fits together amazingly well.
There's not too much to complain about here. A few of the Beatles jokes get a little silly. Maybe the plot jumps about a bit too quickly at the end. Though when these are the biggest problems in a book you know you're reading a winner. If you never got around to reading this one on its initial publication, then you missed out on something special. This one's a keeper.
A characteristically mediocre New Adventure.......2002-02-01
In Orman's first Doctor Who novel, the Seventh Doctor, Ace, and Benny fight an entity from Aztec times that is a sort of Blishian Jack-the-Ripper character, surviving on death and destruction. I'm afraid that this book did nothing to change my lack of enthusiasm for Doctor Who novels: if I want good science fiction, I'll read good science fiction. If I want good character pieces, I'll read fanfic. This mishmash succeeds at neither, and I'm not singling out Orman - that's my capsule opinion of all of the Doctor Who New Adventures, with rare exceptions.
Time travel made complex (in a good way).......2001-07-29
Combining a series of well-known events (the Aztec empire, the sinking of the Titanic, and the assassination of John Lennon) with an underlying strange force that is influencing matters across time, this story advances the current story arc in an unexpected manner...
This is the first novel by Kate Orman, who is one of the best of the Who authors, continues the "Alternate Universe" arc (started with 'Blood Heat' and 'The Dimension Riders' and continuing with 'Conundrum' and 'No Future'). And what a debut! A vital utilisation of the time travel concept underlying the series, a fairly complex plot that slowly unravels as the story continues.
One of Ms Orman's strong points is characterisation, and this is on display herein. However, she is not yet at the height of her writing powers in this book, good though it is. You should give this, and any other books by the same author, a thorough read.
This is the most compelling Dr Who book I've ever read........1999-01-01
If, like myself, you find yourself wishing for something more adult in the line based on the British SF TV series Dr Who, this is the book for you. Definitely not for the kiddies, it places the Doctor in very real peril for his life against an ancient Aztec God wanting to return to 'the good life.' The companions, Bernice and Ace, are also aboard as this titanic struggle between good and evil rages out of control and nearly overwhelms everyone, including the Doctor. This book is tough and gritty and some parts are not for the squeamish. But the scenes of Aztec history, John Lennon's murder and the Titanic sinking are accurate and used as skillful backdrops to the ongoing battle. A ripping good read - and one that you'll believe the Doctor won't survive.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting but there are much better books available.......2005-12-31
This is an interesting subject and LaHaye has some good insights, but overall this book is underwhelming. For starters, his system of classification and division of the temperaments is not even internally coherent. Then his descriptions of the four temperaments are inconsistent and overlapping. For the best book on temperament and personality type read "Please Understand Me II" by David Keirsey instead. One positive aspect of the book is the combination of psychology and Christianity. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we can overcome many of our weaknesses. However, much of his advice is too general or theoretical. For a more practical book combining Christianity and psychology, read "Escaping the Matrix" by Greg Boyd and Al Larson.
Bunk and Heresy.......2004-12-01
I read this book thirty years ago or so, when as a young Christian I was searching for understanding of myself and others. At the time it helped me face myself and understand some things about my natural strengths and weaknesses. As I studied and grew, I came to understand the ancient and somewhat occult origins of his theory, and had to set it aside as heresy.
A thorough treatment of the occult and heretical origin of his theory is available in book form from PsychoHeresy Awareness Ministries. They have a web site with specific information about this book, one of many that add to scriptural teachings about personality and motivation.
I found Kiersey's work on personality type to be more useful to me. Also I have taken a Myers-Briggs test administered by my church and obtained very useful insights. The leadership of my church treats personality variations as phenomena and does not make associations between personality traits and elements of the sinful natute, as LaHaye does, because they think these associations are heresy, that is, a teaching that does not derive from scripture.
LaHaye's system is too crude to be useful for anything except perhaps to stir debate.
I hope Christian home schoolers are not using this book. There are better resources.
Read Huckleberry Finn instead.......2004-11-14
Remember the King prancing around as a reformed pirate, at the camp meeting out in the woods while the Duke ripped off the print shop back in town? The King made out great that day, 80 dollars and more. LaHaye's made a lot more with this book. The King and the Duke wound up getting tarred and feathered, ridden on a rail.
When's Lahaye going to get shown up for what he is? How come 19th Century Arkansaw had more sense than 21st Century Middle America?
It Does More Harm Than Good.......2002-05-05
I first read this book 27 years ago. I read the original edition published around 1974. But this edition is no better!
First, LaHaye condemns "negative" human emotions as SINS. This idea comes from late medieval theology, and was implemented by--who else?--John Calvin. LaHaye insists that anger--which he says is the dominant "negative" emotion for the "choleric" temperament--is the fruit of selfishness. At times he confuses selfishness with self-centeredness. He implies that losing one's temper is a sin, and that by being "controlled by the Holy Spirit" a Christian can NEVER get emotionally angry. He also insists that fear of any kind--especially worry--is also sin, and that the root of fear is selfishness.
The second problem with this book's ideas--which are naturally the author's ideas--is that the fruits of the Spirit are positive emotions. LaHaye also teaches the so-called four temperaments as if they are modern-day notions, while they are actually classical in origin and no longer accepted by behavioral scientists.
LaHaye believes in Sola Scriptura--one of the cries of the Protestant Reformation. Yet, he goes outside of Scripture in his dogmatism. What's more, he manipulates Scripture in order to have it say what he wants it to say.
Book worth reading.......2002-02-22
The minute I got into this book and started reading about the different temperments, I was nodding and saying, "yea, that's me. Oh yea that is me, too." The best part is I often wonder if I could ever change or get rid of my weaknesses. Now I realize that it is a part of my temperment and I don't need to change it but find out how to turn my weaknesses into God's glory.

Disappointing.......2004-02-18
For the most part, I found this book to be very disappointing. I had a hard time getting through the book and didn't really feel like I learned much of anything. I also feel that the title is very misleading. I bought this book expecting to learn about about walking in the Spirit/being led by the Spirit. But this book devotes only a single chapter to those subjects. Another concern I had about this book is that I felt it wasn't biblically based. My recommendation is to skip this book. A much better book on this subject is "Grace Walk" by Steve McVey
Practical Help For The Christian Wife.......2002-08-26
This book by Beverly LaHaye though written some years back has some practical help for the Christian woman to be what God has called her to be. The book begins by giving the 4 basic temperaments of women and some character traits and positives and negatives of each temperament. This allows us to see our strengths and our weaknesses so that we can work with the Holy Spirit to become Christlike. The book covers many areas of how a wife needs to interact with her husband and her attitude toward him. There is also insight and some instruction for growing spiritually. This book is helpful to the Christian wife.
A great tool in becoming spirit controlled!.......2000-09-07
In her book, The Spirit Controlled Woman, Beverly LaHaye offers helpful and practical insights into the Spiritual life of a woman. She weaves together the strengths and weaknesses of the four personality traits in light of the Word of God. This book also offers much insight into how a woman can relate to her friends, co-workers, spouse, and children. It has plentiful spiritual and practical proofs that the Spirit controlled life can indeed be attained.
Excellent guide for strengthening your spirituality........1998-08-21
Beverly LaHaye's book is an excellent guide for the woman looking to regain or strengthen her spirituality. The author helps the reader to recognize her own temperament (or personality base) and determines the strengths and weaknesses of her temperament. By first recognizing her weaknesses, a woman can then work to improve her faults, bringing more tranquility and peace into her life. LaHaye encourages readers to seek spirituality through God and the Bible, and she shows how the search can transform their lives. She gives specific recommendations to become a more spiritual, and thus a more tranquil and happier, person. I would highly recommend this book to all women, especially those who are experiencing unhappiness and turmoil in their lives.
