Book Description

Picture a totalitarian United States just ten years from now: With no end in sight to the War on Terror, a fourth-term President George Blush rules without restraint. The Constitution has been replaced with a "Patriotic Citizen's Bill of Rights and Responsibilities" and America has been renamed "God's United States." The Blush Administration has finally "freed" America of its "treasonous" opposition party, "subversive" media and "obstructionist" judges.

In this starkly terrifying political thriller, Winston Smith is a young, successful producer of patriotic commercials for the Department of Homeland Security. While working to fulfill his dream of making a contemporary film version of 1984, he runs afoul of government censors, is forced to stand trial in a nightmarish courtroom, and faces brutal execution in a privatized prison. Rescued by a mysterious, powerful young woman and a band of teenage computer hackers, he joins the Resistance and becomes swept up in a deadly struggle to undermine his government's stranglehold on power and information.

As it conjures up a frightening - and highly controversial - vision of the future, Dawn Blair's gripping novel of American dystopia lays bare the most incendiary political issues of the present day.

2 out of 5 stars A Good Comic Book.......2006-08-10

Good ideas rarely go far unless they're executed well. In this story, the author has a good premise for a story, but the whole concept would probably have worked far batter as a comic book. Villains with sardonic smiles and grotesque ideas vs. the nebbish anti-Hero learning only too late what lies in store for someone who follows the party line is a caricature of the Orwell original and far more suitable for the "graphic novel" world than mainstream literary efforts. This isn't written well enough for a "summer-reading-at-the-beach" list, but could easily be re-cast into alternative literature.

On the other hand, if you know going into it that it's written like a comic book, you can make it through to the end, and the journey is mildly entertaining. On the other hand, if you feel your reading time should be spent reading works that have been meticulously crafted (AND edited!), then please look elsewhere. You won't find that here.

4 out of 5 stars Heart in the right place.......2006-03-31

This is a quick and "fun" read. Its targets are squarely hit, if a bit tpp obviously so. The adventure story thrills, regardless of its purported relationship to the Orwell classic, and the characters, though not extravagantly developed, are credible. This satirical volume is a true and valuable cautionary morality tale for our age.

1 out of 5 stars Thought it might be good, but..........2005-10-14

Alot of hype went into the marketing of this book, and, unfortunately, like the saps portrayed in the book itself, I fell for it and bought the thing. The back cover touts it as, "A 1984 for our times." I would amend that statement to read, "A 1984 for our times...as told by Danielle Steele." If there were ever an object by which the meaning of "trite" could be easily conveyed, this is it. Blair takes a topic that is very serious, and unfortunately, something that we WILL experience in our lifetimes, and turns it into a Jerry Bruckheimer summer movie. I am trying to keep this review civil, but mother of God, it's hard to keep calm about how disappointed I am in myself for having bought this bound roll of toilet paper.

The contrivance of the main character having been born to 'liberal' parents that named him Winston Smith, as a satire of the Reagan regime, sets the book off on a horribly grating footing. The way characters flit in and out of the story without anymore development than a superficial "he smokes herb" or "he's a christian who won't kill himself" is extremely tedious, and would be more so if the main character himself weren't just as depthless, despite over 200 pages devoted to his story.

Admitedlly, I couldn't get past page 182. Lord knows I tried, but sometimes I just would rather not throw up. OK, this has devolved into a rant, and for that I apologize. Bottom line, this author takes a very serious and soon-to-be real subject, and treats it like fantasy. You know, if I didn't know better, I might think she worked for "Foxy" Broadcasting, and writing this book was just a ploy to get a whole bunch of Bush-hating liberal scum on a list. The book's about as insipid as some of the Party propaganda she decribes coming from the "GOB-bers". The names, the blasted names! I'm sure everyone has already ragged on her for the assinine name adjustments that I'm sure put her out of reach of a libel lawsuit. Good work there, Dawn. Oh wait, that reminds me, unless it's an autobiography, it's not a great idea to name one of the main characters after yourself. Anyone else think that was odd? OK, enough.

By the way: When are we going to stop using the term "Orwellian" and start referring to propaganda, warmongering, and the move toward martial law as "reality"?

3 out of 5 stars America 2014.......2005-03-26

America 2014 is an admirable start for this first time author. A gripping tale that is set in the political wasteland of,The United States of America,Now refered to as God's United States, thanks to the outdated and outmoded constition being replaced with "The Patriotic Citizens Bill of Rights". This 1984 knock-off holds to the idea that thanks to the war on terror and the conservative sweeping of the government following a series of crackdowns on liberal groups, the Republican party takes control of congress. They then promptly make a constitutional amendment banning a two party system. This makes the GOP the primary holder of all the cards, which they promptly begin using to push forth their own view of the world by instituting the afformentioned bill. This sets the stage for the emergence of our hero Winston Smith(Named by his parents after the protaganist of 1984) A solid party man with all the connections, an up and comer who is held by the GOP as a great asset. Nearing the edge of mental breakdown in his job writing propaganda for the party (which the author takes as a chance to spew political rhetoric), Winston is advised to take a vacation. So he gathers up his supermodel wannabe girlfriend, and packs it off to jolly old England, one of the last free countries in the world thanks to the GOP's political machinations and colonial expansions. While on vacation, Winston meets up with old freinds who have become radical liberals, A discussion of politics ensues. It seems that Winston wishes to be a screen writer and had been working on a script for a remake of the movie version of 1984. However the powers that be in Washington have informed him that this would be a terrible idea for him to follow so he sells the idea to the BBC. Upon his return to God's America he is arrested for treason and sentenced to be executed. A last minute political donation saves him from this fate and our hero is sent to a prison workcamp for political dissidents, where he meets up with other political prisoners (cue more political discussions), and eventually escapes. We then get to follow our hero through the now expansive ghetto, filled with even more political dissidents (cue even more political rhetoric). Eventually Winston sees that the party does not in fact live up to its reputation and joins the resistance. This clever retelling of the classic tale of big brother is well written with the exception of several glaring problems which detracted from my enjoyment of the story. First of all the author uses a choice of poor pseudonyms for the antagonists (President Blush, Vice-president Croney among others) which I found to be distracting from the story and which will in a few short years render this story obsolete. Secondly and perhaps the most blinding is the way in which the author beats the reader nearly to death with her political views.Rather than the expansive mildly sinister big brother of the original she has made the GOP into a monster with no motive except destruction. Where Orwell used a scalpel to dissect an idea the author comes in wielding a katana. By no means do I mean to detract from the authors ability to write intelligent and thought provoking prose. In fact, I found the writing style to be fluid and well thought out, If not for the way in which the author brought forth the politics, which was reminicent of a second year political science major, I would of enjoyed the story even more than I did. A truly excellent piece of literature that I fear will be rendered obsolete in a few years due to the abovementioned flaws. Not a classic, by any means, but something good for the political buff who needs a little fluff.

1 out of 5 stars Destined to provide $s for the Author's Dodge Neon.......2005-03-10

And the impact of the book won't last nearly as long. Any one familiar with Orwell's writing could not possibly compare him to this hack writer. Get a grip, folks. A minus 5 (-5) rating is appropriate. The book can only hold the interest of stoned berkley types, or wasted, hashish soaked French philosophy students enrolled in third rate colleges.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasing followup!.......2007-07-14

After reading "Path of Fate," this book answered my need for more of Resil. I loved this book as much as I loved the first one.

The continuation of the characters and their growth was exciting. The information about the sorcerers and Resil's struggle with evil was exciting! I would read this book again even if the author decided to put more information in it to make the pages twice as long. Usually the quality of detail is only necessary but it takes a GREAT author to write a both qualitative and quantitative, exciting novel.

Each book is different but it all ties together to form a wonderfully written trilogy.

This is a true Science Fiction/Fantasy novel and a series that I will re-read again.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome read!!!.......2007-02-09

This book was some amazing fantasy. You MUST read "Path of Fate" first or you'll definitely be lost though.

It started out slow at first and I had to re-orient myself with the characters, but after the first few chapters the storyline became clearer and I really got into it.

There are some graphic torture scenes and therefore I would not call this a child's fantasy book. On the other hand, the characters are memorable, likeable (or detestable), and extremely believeable. I'm very excited to read the third book in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the first.......2006-03-10

This one progressed well from the first and the sinister side of political intrigue reared it's ugly head. She has several unpleasant choices ahead of her and ultimately works it out. Great read and a good plot.

**A book I would also recommend is The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. This, the first installment of The Morcyth Saga is a great beginning for a new author. Battles, magic, gods, secret passages and intrigue, all the elements of a classic epic fantasy! Any fantasy reader will enjoy it

4 out of 5 stars A Complicated Path.......2005-02-15

The problem in writing a trilogy is the second book. It is one that has to provide enough complications to warrant a third book, and yet do so without confusing the reader, at the same time as keeping the reader's interest. Some writers fail to do this well, which really indicates that the book should be in two parts, not three. (Sean Russell's recent trilogy really should have just been two books rather than three.)

However, Path of Honor manages to keep the reader's interest. It also provides enough intrigue to show that this story warrants three books, and will therefore make a strong trilogy. The characterisation could be made a little stronger, but overall this is a minor weakness in the novel.

The story IS complicated, but that is necessary in order to develop the entire tale.

2 out of 5 stars Too much unnecessary detail.......2005-01-26

After reading "Path of Fate", I had high hopes for this new book. "Path of Fate" presented a coherent picture of a well-created world. Sadly, in the new book, the author felt it necessary to introduce far too many new plot devices and too wide a range of new characters. Why did we need the other world, from which two of the characters come? Why a rift between two worlds? [done before, better] Where did the coal drake appear from? [seems to be a plot device to handle a couple of rough patches in the plot] Why introduce the land of Scallas and the sorcerers? [unnecessary extra detail] Why has the Lady withdrawn her presence from Kodu Riik? [given that her presence is vital to the concept of the ahalad-kaaslane] Why did we need the graphic descriptions of torture? [we certainly would have got the picture that the bad guy was bad without such extensive graphic descriptions] And why oh why are all the names so confusing? [I think especially that it was a mistake to use a term as convoluted and hard to pronounce as "ahalad-kaaslane" for the key concept]

The most distressing thing about the book is that it doesn't finish. It leaves you in mid-plot, with the promise of a new book to come out next year. I think a lot of extraneous material could have been excised from this book, the plot tightened up, and the story finished within the page count provided.

It is said that everyone has a book in them. For this author that book was "Path of Fate". To produce more than one good book requires a lot of work. I trust that the third book will be an improvement on this second one.

      Book Description

Gregorian chant was the dominant liturgical music of the medieval period, from the time it was adopted by Charlemagne's court in the eighth century; but for centuries afterwards it competed with other musical traditions, local repertories from the great centres of Rome, Milan, Ravenna, Benevento, Toledo, Constantinople, Jerusalem, and Kievan Rus, and comparative study of these chant traditions can tell us much about music, liturgy, literacy and culture a thousand years ago. This is the first book-length work to look at the issues in a global, comprehensive way, in the manner of the work of Kenneth Levy, the leading exponent of comparative chant studies. It covers the four most fruitful approaches for investigators: the creation and transmission of chant texts, based on the psalms and other sources, and their assemblage into liturgical books; the analysis and comparison of musical modes and scales; the uses of neumatic notation for writing down melodies, and the differences wrought by developmental changes and notational reforms over the centuries; and the use of case studies, in which the many variations in a specific text or melody are traced over time and geographical distance. The book is therefore of profound importance for historians of medieval music or religion - Western, Byzantine, or Slavonic - and for anyone interested in issues of orality and writing in the transmission of culture.PETER JEFFERY is Professor of Music History, Princeton University. "Star Trek: Voyager's" most popular episode featured the holodeck adventures of Captain Proton, his faithful secretary Constance Goodheart, and ace reporter Buster Kincaid. Now that space-age melodrama is brought to vivid life in a format that faithfully reproduces the look and style 1940s pulp magazines.

                    3 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-31

This is a spoof based on a holodeck game that Harry Kim and Tom Parris played, by the looks. The hero is a Captain Future style hero, without the more than human sidekicks, just a reporter.

The book is done to be a facsimile style pulp novel, with the same style for the table of contents, shorts, letters to the editor, backup features that are to be continued, etc. All spoofing as well. Quite well done for what they have have meant to do.

The writing, much like in Randall Garrett's Back Stage Lensman, is deliberately bad or incongruous.

                    "Now it was a One-Bug-Eyed-Monster! An O.B.E.M."

"It is amazing to me," Proton observed. "How far evil can fall when pushed slightly."

There are other similar literary gems to be had throughout the book.

                    Quite likely to amuse.

3 out of 5 stars Simple Escapist Fun.......2005-10-02

Captain Proton: Defender of the Earth plays off of a very good concept. It puts the hero of Tom Paris' holodeck adventures into written fiction. The fifties-flavored hero emulates classic spacemen like Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon. Thus, it is logical to make the suggestion that if he had been an actual fictional character, he may well have started out in print before moving to the silver screen. This book could have made use of the Captain Proton character a few different ways; it could have written a serious, full-length novel starring the character, or it could have been a novel about the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager framing another Captain Proton holodeck adventure. However, what Dean Wesley Smith and the other writers (unless those other credits are just pen names for Smith) chose to do was emulate the style of the pulp magazines of yesteryear. These magazines thrived on science-fiction and "rocketmen," so they would be a likely place to find our good Captain.
In the main feature, "Children of the Glass," Smith does go a little over the top in reflecting this style, taking a somewhat tongue-in-cheek attitude in doing so. While I haven't read much else that he has written, it certainly appears that he is dumbing down his writing. The excessive use of single-sentence paragraphs that end in exclamation points can be incredibly annoying, as can the overuse of exclamation points in general. However, as I progressed through the story, I found that I got used to it slowly, and by the end, it really didn't bother me as much. That said, I think the story could have been much more enjoyable if he had curbed that just a little. All in all, though, the nineteen-chapter serial does do a very good job of reflecting the fast-paced and carefree stories of the Golden Age. Reflecting a worldview where good and evil were easily defined and the good guys always win, Smith keeps the action rolling, if not especially intense. If the reader can accept the pervasive purple prose, "Children of the Glass" will be enjoyable to fans of Captain Proton or any tribute to classic Sci-Fi.
After "Children of the Glass," there are six backup features that serve to fill in a little more space, and also help give this the feel of a real Golden Age pulp magazine. There are three shorter backup stories and three featurettes. The first backup story, "Death of the Patrol," is the second part of a serial. It continues from "Space Vortex of Doom," which appeared in Amazing Stories, I believe. The second backup story focuses on Captain Proton's secretary, Constance Goodheart, and the third focuses on his sidekick, Buster Kincaid. The three featurettes replicate nonfiction pieces that appeared in these kinds of magazines. The first is a description of the planet Mercury, the second details Seattle in the future, and the third is a number of letters to the editor. All of these did a very good job of emulating the style and feel of such features, and contribute well to the atmosphere of this book.
All in all, these backup features are really more of the same as the main story. If you liked "Children of the Glass," you'll probably enjoy these. If not, don't get your hopes up. But overall, I'd say that "Captain Proton: Defender of the Earth" is a good tribute to those good old days when you could spend a dime or so for a good magazine chock full of exciting stories like these. This book was by no means great literature, but it was certainly a nice dose of escapist fun.

                    1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2000-07-14

I'll fess up: I'm not a big fan of Star Trek novelizations, but I figured I'll give this one a try because I love old SF, Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, Commander Cody, etc. Wow, did I figure wrong!

If this book where any slower, it would have been arrested for blocking traffic. Those old serials were renowned for their frantic pace, which this book comes nowhere near.

Further, the author doesn't seem to be sure whether he is doing a hommage to the old serials or a satire. Doesn't really matter, though, because by the time you've noticed the inconsistency, you'll have given up reading this...book.

                    5 out of 5 stars Captain Proton's REAL Basis.......2000-06-02

A number of other reviewers have stated that the Captain Proton character is based on either Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers. They are incorrect. In reality the character is the Republic Pictures "Rocketman" character who appeared in 4 Republic Serials under the names Jeff King aka "The Rocketman", Larry Martin, and Commando Cody (twice). The Serials were respectively King of the Rocketmen, Zombies of the Stratosphere, Radar Men from the Moon, and Commando Cody - Sky Marshal of the Universe (which was not realy a serial but a 12 Episode TV Show/Story Arc [ie: the episodes did not end in cliffhangers]).

OTOH: Chaotica WAS based on Flash Gordon's arch enemy Ming the Merciless.

The Robot (who appeared in the Star Trek Episodes [BTW: there were 3 not 2 two where were named - the 3rd was the flashback one about the Water-planet and Paris's Demotion]) is the "Republic Robot" who appeared in a number of Republic Serials including Zombies.

3 out of 5 stars Overpriced but cute........2000-01-06

Printed in two-column style, little this book is packed full of goofy but fun references to Destructo Beams and Imagizers, Giant Trundle Spiders and Beings Not From This Universe. And, of course, Constance Goodheart's very good screams.

I was disappointed in the photographs, taken as they were from Voyager's only Proton episodes, "Night," and "Bride of Chaotica!" and used over and over (all at least twice and several more times than that).

But if you're looking for a harmless bit of sci-fi fluff and don't mind the $$ for it this one's for you. Me? I got mine with a gift certificate!

I am in the process of the reading Lynn Andrew's seven book series. Therefore, I do not recommend that anyone try and read this book, before reading the first two books in the series. The jaguar woman so far has been one of my favorites. Lynn continues take her readers on her journey, of adventure and self discovery.

This is a haunting tale that takes you out of yourself, actually almost out of "humanness" to reflect on what it is to know something or somebody. Did this really happen? Was it all a halucination? A dream? Or can we really exist beyond ourselves and learn to know in a new way? I read the book 3 years ago and it still haunts me on occassion. It is written from a perspective so totally different that it makes you step away from yourself and look afresh at your own world, works and thoughts.

                    Book Description

In her most inventive work, Andrews transports the reader to the ancient Mayan civilization of the Yucatan. We experience not only a physical transformation, but a psychic, mental, and emotional one as well. In this extraordinary journey to the unknown, Andrews becomes a jaguar spirit and explores the movement from one consciousness to another. With the foundation laid by her earlier work, Jaguar Woman follows the spiritual emergence of a true modern-day shaman.

I picked up this book at a used book store after having a vivid dream about a black jaguar the night before. Not knowing what exactly i was getting i had no expectations. I began reading it that night and finished it the next day. I enjoyed it so much that went back to the book store to pick up the rest of the trilogy. All in all it was an entertaining, fascinating read. Andrews is a good story teller, she manages to write detailed yet straight to the point accounts of events, keeping the book short and sweet. Being a woman i could really appreciate reading about shamanism from a female perspective, a subject i often find is writen by men. The characters are likable and her adventures mystical. I enjoyed the book and recommend reading it especially to women in search of there own personal power. :)

I had not read this book in years and plucked it off the shelf and started reading it. (Even after reading the dull review on amazon.) I have been reading it every night finding it very interesting and food for thought when it comes to learning about ourselves, our journey on this planet, reverence for the sacred, the earth and Spirit. I would recommend this book. It is an easy read and not real long and heavy.

Just like Medicine Woman I am not sure whether or not to believe just how much of this is to. Too many Beverley Hills like fantastical sequences of how strange people come in and out of the story. Is there really a Red Dog? Or and Agnes Whistling Elk. And the whole shapeshifting seems really bizarre outside a metaphorical use. Great read, deep descriptions of the Yucutan, and perhaps Lynne really does take some fascinating trips to the world in search of aboriginal wisdom. My one question: Are the Native community that are the keepers of this sacred tradition sharing the royalities from Andrews Production Company?
