        Book Description

Astronomy on Trial systematically and convincingly argues against every aspect of the theory behind the idea of the "Big Bang." Using a readable style that incorporates the laws of physics, Roy C. Martin exposes the impossibilities that have been so commonly manipulated to support the Big Bang theory. He carefully explains the absurdities that have come to represent modern day cosmology and high-energy physics that have arisen from the group-think phenomenon. Martin reveals this group-think as the tendency of scientists to fit the astronomical observational data that flow into context within the standard theories already established by the community of cosmologists. The author's witty, point-by-point exposition of the impossibility of the Big Bang not only provides insights into this one situation, but reveals a troubling trend of a lack of skepticism in scientific research in general that calls for a reevaluation of conclusions in all other fields of science.

Are you just another AFC ("average frustrated chump") trying to meet an HB ("hot babe")? How would you like to "full-close" with a Penthouse Pet of the Year? The answers, my friend, are in Neil Strauss's entertaining book The Game. Strauss was a self-described chick repellant--complete with large, bumpy nose, small, beady eyes, glasses, balding head, and, worst of all, painful shyness around women. He felt like "half a man." That is, until a book editor asked him to investigate the community of pickup artists. Strauss's life was transformed. He spent two years bedding some fine chiquitas and studying with some of the North America's most suave gents--including the best of them all, the God of the pickup "community," a man named Mystery.

Mystery is an aspiring Toronto magician who charges $2,250 for a weekend pickup workshop. He is not much to look at: a cross between a vampire and a computer geek. But by using high-powered marketing techniques he's turned seduction into an effortless craft--even inventing his own vocabulary. His technique sounds like a car salesman's tip sheet: his main rule is FMAC--find, meet, attract, close. He employs the "three-second rule"--always approach a woman within three seconds of first seeing her in order to avoid getting shy. Other tricks: Intrigue a beautiful woman by pretending to be unaffected by her charm; also, never hit on a woman right away. Start with a disarming, innocent remark, like "Do you think magic spells work?" or "Oh my god, did you see those two girls fighting outside?" And finally, the most important characteristic of the pickup artist--smile.

After two years, Strauss ends up becoming almost as successful as Mystery, but he comes to an important realization. His techniques were actually off-putting to the woman he ended up falling in love with. And they never prepared him for actually having a relationship. After a while, he ran out of one-liners and had to have a real conversation. Still, The Game is a great read that may help some AFCs come out of their shells. --Alex Roslin

                      Book Description

Hidden somewhere, in nearly every major city in the world, is an underground seduction lair. And in these lairs, men trade the most devastatingly effective techniques ever invented to charm women. This is not fiction. These men really exist. They live together in houses known as Projects. And Neil Strauss, the bestselling author, spent two years living among them, using the pseudonym Style to protect his real-life identity. The result is one of the most explosive and controversial books of the year -- guaranteed to change the lives of men and transform the way women understand the opposite sex forever.

On his journey from AFC (average frustrated chump) to PUA (pick-up artist) to PUG (pick-up guru), Strauss not only shares scores of original seduction techniques but also has unforgettable encounters with the likes of Tom Cruise, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Heidi Fleiss, and Courtney Love. And then things really start to get strange -- and passions lead to betrayals lead to violence. The Game is the story of one man's transformation from frog to prince -- to prisoner in the most unforgettable book of the year.

                      3 out of 5 stars The game.......2007-10-11

Good story. However, if one listens to Mystery's tale about the scorpion, which can't change its nature even if it has to die, then how on earth a male in his thirties (fourties?) is able to transform his habits in couple of years? A reader is being familirized with the PUA terminology like - elicit values, field test; fluff, opener etc., where talking is the most essential part. But hey, then Style brags about picking up a Czech girl who "has no more than a dozen words of English in her vocabulary"! Bars and clubs are where the action here goes on, yes, but what about everyday environment like a store, shop, show, queue. Unfortunately, in the book those are just couple epizodes.
And finally, Neil Strauss says that a shrunken-apple face betrays one's Eastern European origins (p.406). Interesting. It reminded me of an Italian prison doctor Cesare Lambrose, who in the 19th century suggested that physiological traits such as the measurements of one's cheek bones or hairline, or a cleft palate were indicative of one's atavistic criminal tendencies.

I tried some of the suggested methods in the book. They didn't work, at least not exactly. I did get a few positive responses. Well, let me put it this way: "The sex you want, you aren't getting, and the sex you're getting , you don't want..."

                      5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Entertaining read!.......2007-10-08

This was one of the most fascinating and entertaining books I've ever read. Besides getting an inside look at the society of pick-up artists, I gained some interesting insight into human psychology. It's written in a wonderful narrative, story style which made it hard to put down.

It is a must read, whether you're interested in learning about how to pick up women or you're just wanting to read a great true story.

                      I highly recommend it!

                      Book Description

The history of blacktop basketball in fast-paced words and pictures. A New York street hustler. A lonely man in a Maryland prison. A confused Native American on a reservation in Idaho. What do they all have in common? They are among the best pickup basketball players in the country. In Pickup Artists, Lars Anderson and Chad Millman tell the complete story of the street game from its mythical past to its glorious present. Using original reporting to examine the evolution of playground basketball, Anderson and Millman are the first journalists to unravel the thickly woven tapestry of the sport's subculture. Today's super-hyped, corporate-sponsored tournaments weren't always the norm. The foundation of the game was laid with sweat in the 1920s and it has grown from a rudimentary sport to a sophisticated exhibition. Basketball is more than macho melodramas acted out in America's inner cities. It's a town meeting in the heart of Indiana and symbol of freedom for prisoners in jail. Anderson and Millman tap into the essence of pickup basketball, examining its importance everywhere the game is played. They profile not just legends like Earl Marigault and Joe Hammond, but players like Fred "Spook" Stegman, the man who carries the legacy of being the first to connect the playgrounds with colleges, and Gregory Vaughn, whose tragic death in the 1980s exposed the underground world of drugs in basketball. Forget about the NBA and showtime. Pickup basketball is about basketball on the blacktops, at its most basic level. It's about the unusual lives of some of the nation's best players you've never heard of. Until now.

I was totally immersed in this book from beginning to end. It is very well written, and well-edited, and it brings the story Pete Axthelm started closer to present day. I thought, nothwithstanding the comments from NBA.com herein, that its treatment of the relationship between the street and the business of basketball was intelligent and compelling. I recommend it highly.

this is truly an awesome book. not only does it teach you many things about the game and its origins, but it also opens up your eyes to things like growing up in streetball areas isnt as glamourous as it seems. i honestly feel like now everytime i play basketball or watch streetball, i will have that extra boost. another great thing is that it is very intelligently written and has a high reading level so its not boring or nething. THANK YOU PICKUP ARTISTS! i reccomend this to any fan of basketball or ne1 that wants to learn sumtin about it

This is a very interesting look at the history of amateur basketball from the early 20th century until the late 1990's. It focuses on street basketball, but also highlights basketball in places such as small town Indiana, an Indian reservation, and resort towns of the 1920's-40's. It is more about the culture surrounding basketball and its importance to various communities. There are a lot of wonderful anecdotes and legends included in the story, but they are only minor details in a much larger portrait. The book is not particularly well organized and the writing itself was poor, but it is obvious that extensive research went into it and the subject is very interesting, so I would recommend it on those merits alone.

As a senior editor at NBA.com, I feel my opinion holds just as much validity (if validity can be held) as a number of the other reviewers, and a little more than the supposed "Don Imus" quote that one of the authors perhaps submitted. While the book should be applauded for its comprehensive look at its subject, it does little to transcend the sad state of postwar sports journalism.

I have read several books regarding street basketball in america. This particular book covers legends across the country. It also takes a look at the sociology of regions. Although the basis of my research has been focused on New York this book was a great, well-written suprise. It is a thoughtful look at personalities and stories surrounding the legends you may have never heard of. If you want to read a good book on the subject this is a great place to start, It is very well written and thoughtful.

                          Book Description

From the award-winning author of Pirates of the Universe, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, comes The Pickup Artist-a sharp, witty, and subversive exploration of the future of art, culture, and society. In the tradition of Ray Bradbury's fireman who burns books in Fahrenheit 451, our hero, Hank Shapiro, is a pickup artist, a government agent who gathers for retirement creative works whose time has come and gone. You see, there's simply not enough room in the world for all the art, so anything past a certain age must be cataloged, archived in the records, and destroyed, paving the way for new art. It's a job that comes with risk and the pay's lousy, but it covers the bills. And, after all, this year's art is better than last year's, isn't it?But what happens is not nearly as important as the telling. Terry Bisson is an American writer in the satirical tradition of Twain and Vonnegut and perhaps Richard Brautigan. He can make you laugh and touch your heart in the same sentence. This is a book about love, death, and America.

Certainly, there are elements of Tom Robbins and Douglas Adams and Terry Gilliam in this book, but this is less like a story and more like a collection of interesting elements. The plot gets more and more nonchalantly weirder to the point of absurdity, so I was able to skim the last 50 pages without any worry that I'd miss anything important. I believe that the book could be improved by moving the interspersed "history lesson" to an appendix rather than forcing the reader to wade through it on the chance there's something interesting within.

5 out of 5 stars Science Fiction worthy of the genre.......2002-08-08

I haven't read science fiction for a long time because science fiction had stopped being what it used to be. Science fiction used to be fun, challenging, stimulating, and critical. This novel brought all of those things back to me and I recommend it unreservedly. It starts with a neatly drawn, nicely consistent future society richly described with gritty detail. The characters are few but interesting and believable. The plot commenses with a nod towards Fahrenheit 451, but travels in unexpected directions. The author's style is reminiscent of Ray Bradbury, Alfred Bester, and Cordwainer Smith. Fine company for a contemporary author.

I had to laugh at the number of "stiff" reviews of the Pickup Artist, here. A fun imagination is definitely required for reading, otherwise the tongue-in-cheek absurdity appears to get lost on some hapless folks.

"The Pickup Artist" is most definitely absurd, but also very inventive, and surprisingly, even thought provoking. "Fahrenheit 451" it is not, nor does it try to be. Bisson is very successful in creating a world unto his own; crazy, yet consistent. The book's ending is solid, satisfying and even poignant.

I would love to read more.

Wow...this book is TERRIBLE. I know that doesn't help potential readers as much of an insighful review, but this book is truly bad. When the most interesting part of the book is the prologue, you've got serious problems. The characters are completely undeveloped and uninteresting, and every plot device is poorly utilized. For example, he tries and fails miserably to convey emotion in the female lead by alluding to the changing colors of birds on her sweater (something akin to a "mood ring," but allows him to talk about breasts I guess). An actual author would have just found the right words to convey her emotional state. And I couldn't help thinking of the drug HalfLife (which allows one to communicate with the dead because of air "trapped in their lungs") as a dumb rip off of Miracle Max and his bellows in The Princess Bride...he's only MOSTLY dead. At least that was funny. This was just stupid. If the author had bothered to explain anything about what is going on about his world instead of boring us with snippets of history, it might have made a book with a very interesting premise bearable. Instead, this seems like a rush job built on a neat idea and lazily written to capitalize on previous success. Blech.

                          4 out of 5 stars A Hilarious Look At A Censored Future.......2001-10-27

Admittedly this is not one of the great works of contemporary science fiction, but I couldn't help but smile reading page after page of this witty, slender novel. Bisson is one of science fiction's funniest satirists since Kurt Vonnegut announced that he isn't a science fiction writer (My humble apologies to Vonnegut - you were and still are - a science fiction writer.). He paints a satirical look at the future that is as riveting as any I've read in an early William Gibson novel or any of Jack Womack's. Bisson's main protagonist Hank Shapiro comes across as a befuddled, amusing Ulysses searching for the Holy Grail (a Hank Williams LP!) in a dystopic American future. I eagerly await Bisson's subsequent efforts in humorous science fiction.
