In his debut story collection, You Are Not a Stranger Here, Adam Haslett drags into the light subjects often left in the cellar. Most of his stories are told from the viewpoint of the mentally ill (though one, "The Good Doctor," shows us madness from a caregiver's perspective). The rest of the stories deal with closeted homosexuality: boys who are just learning their identity, men who have never come to terms with it. Haslett is an enormously compassionate writer, and shows a lovely, plain-written acuity about his people. His writing is a convincing inside job--he never romanticizes or oversimplifies. In "The Volunteer," an old woman at a care facility is haunted by the voice of an ancestress named Hester: "For more than two decades, Elizabeth Maynard has done exactly as she is told and the voice of Hester, which has cost her so much, comes only quietly and intermittently. It is a negative sort of achievement, she thinks, to have spent a life warding something off."

Haslett has a gift for writing quietly about sensational topics: men cruising each other in the park at night; an abusive, self-hating relationship between two adolescent boys. The stories can get a bit too fancy: the writer can't resist the ironic twist or the surprise ending. Still, this is a beautifully written collection that's as heartfelt as it is intelligent. --Claire Dederer

Book Description

The publication of “Notes to My Biographer,” in Zoetrope: All-Story magazine introduced readers to the remarkable voice of Adam Haslett. Nominated as part of a National Magazine Award, broadcast on National Public Radio, performed at venues across the country, the story brought the author widespread recognition.

Now, in his first book, Adam Haslett gives us nine richly varied stories, each suffused with intense emotion and written in a lyric prose alternatively lush and spare. You Are Not a Stranger Here carries its readers into the hearts and minds of people facing life’s most profound dilemmas. We meet an aging inventor still burning with ideas as he makes a final visit to his gay son. A psychiatrist’s encounter with a reluctant patient reveals a young doctor’s own needs and fears. An orphaned boy finds solace in a classmate’s violence. The return of an old lover disturbs the peace between a brother and sister who have lived together for decades.

In settings that range from New England to Great Britain, from Los Angeles to the American West, the stories in this book treat what Faulkner called the old verities and truths of the heart: love and honor, pity and pride, compassion and sacrifice. They do so with heartbreaking precision and an often generous humor, drawing us past the surface of characters’ lives into the moments of decision and recognition that shape them irrevocably. Together these stories constitute a significant achievement by a powerful new writer.

4 out of 5 stars Great debut fiction.......2006-12-05

Adam Haslett is a writer who knows how to lure you in. His stories have a melodious rhythm burnished to a high sheen by his obvious intelligence and sophistication. He is a times a writer in search of his own voice (as you'd expect in a debut collection), but the characters and plots of his stories are bold and self-assured. For all his charm and sophistication, he knows how to hit the reader with tragic stories that are too complex to be dismissed as melodrama.

The flaws other reviewers have pointed out are there (if you choose to see them as flaws). Haslett's stories mostly trade on the same handful of themes: thwarted homosexual desire, mental illness, and parental abandonment (usually by suicide). More disappointing (IMO) is the weakness of the last three stories compared to the others. I read an interview with Haslett where he said he wrote the last three after signing a contract for the book. They feel rushed and uninspired, as if they were dashed off to round out the collection. In the same interview, he said he's working on a novel. It's now been a few years since this collection came out, so hopefully his novel will be out soon. I know I'll be first in line to read it.

5 out of 5 stars the darkness of grief.......2006-08-12

My desire to read this book came, from all places, the Today Show. Jonathan Franzen was on to introduce this book club selection and the author. Besides my willingness take a recommendation from an author I admire, I was drawn to the themes. In the darkness of grief can hide the true elements of man. Haslett shows that transformation occurs when we are faced with the hardships of life and when we realize the darkness within ourselves. I've often thought that grief serves as such a dramatic turning point for people that it would make a fantastic starting point for a story, though I have yet to capitalize on this notion. Haslett tends to look at people who are stalled or so overcome by grief that they are ruled by it. While the theme sort of takes over the collection, Haslett really accomplishes great things. In many ways it is obviously a first effort, but it hints at great things to come.

3 out of 5 stars Beautifully written downer.......2006-08-10

I bought this book at the dollar store for, you guessed it, a dollar. Somewhere in me is this naive optimist who believes in the hidden gem theory. I'm not saying that I didn't find a gem, I'm just saying I wish I hadn't. These stories are well-written, clever, forthright and SO DEPRESSING! I'm all for exposing the reality of characters, I don't insist on happy endings or tidy plots, but I do like a bone thrown my way occasionally, just so I don't find my frown staying right side up for the duration. Seems to me Mr. Haslett was let down by his editor, who should have solicited some lighter stories to bring the book into balance.

3 out of 5 stars It never quite lifts off the field of the common.......2006-04-07

The reason why I picked up a copy of "You Are Not A Stranger Here' by Adam Haslett was because I stumbled on an article recently claiming Jonathan Franzen praised the author. Unfortunately, I was slightly disappointed.

The book is a compilation of short stories, most of which involve a man or woman in need of some sort of medical assistance (a 70+ year old Alzheimer's patient, a severely depressed homosexual - actually there are two stories of this kind, a Schizophrenic woman, a doctor who's treating a patient). The connotation of the stories borders on the bizarre, but it never quite crosses the border between unusual and exceptional. I attributed this to the fact that the author is making his debut with this book and does not want to overly expose the narrative, so instead he cautiously treads.

My recommendation is as follows: If you can find this book in a library, take a look at it, you may find something spiritually helpful. If you are thinking about spending some money on a book go for "The Body Artist" or "How To Be Alone" instead.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it..........2006-01-04

Developing strong characters in a short story is very difficult to do, but Haslett has mastered it. He writes these characters with a level of compassion that is pure yet understated. He cares about them, but doesn't portray them as saints or martyrs. What results are stories of real people with real emotions.

Haslett explores depression and mental imbalance with patience not usually afforded to such topics. In his opening story, "Notes to My Biographer" he writes from the perspective of a man suffering from what seems to be senile dementia. Instead of passing him off as crazy, he makes his quirks believable if not in some way lovable. This compassion continues story after story as Haslett describes grief in a way that makes sense beyond hackneyed sympathy card grief. His stories, "The Good Doctor" and "The Beginnings of Grief" stand out in this respect.

This is a collection of stories that I feel is best read one at a time. When I was reading it I found myself stopping after each story to let it sink in. Haslett's writing style is so beautiful and affective, there is no way to read You Are Not a Stranger Here and not be in some way moved. I can't wait to read more from this author!

instead of buying it! I re-read parts of Book One, The Iron Tree, so I would be "up to date" on this sequel. I must admit that I didn't like the main character, Jewel, at all. I don't see why whatshisname (the guy that married her) liked her either. The book began to drag when they started their journeying together, and I must admit I started out skipping pages, then whole chapters, then all the way to the end to at least see how it turned out. I didn't feel any of the fascination that I had with The Iron Tree.

Of course with all that skipping I may have missed something vital that could have resulted in a better feeling about the book.

2 out of 5 stars Could not even finish this book.......2006-07-05

I am a huge fan of CDT, but this book is just STUPID. You really see how much trouble she has with plotting in this sequel that fails for so many reasons.

I love the way she weaves all the fantasy into the story, but the plot here is so boring and has all been done before, ie the search for the fountain of youth...PLEASE!

Characters come and go and we are left with the god-like Jewel with her saphire eyes and some other guy who's name escapes me. I could not get interested in their travels or care much really for either of them as they were impervious to harm and seemingly invincible. Other characters were so insignificant they are just little blips in the story and you end up getting confused with who is who and why they are there and what's the point and so on.

I just had to stop reading it as i was bored to tears. I love her detailed descriptions of things, but this time it just annoyed me and i was skimming over them to hurry up and see if there would be some sort of plot at the end of them.

Maybe it would have got better, but after about 350 pages of nothing much happening at all I realise i'm glad i just borrowed this one rather than buying it.

5 out of 5 stars fabulous coming of age fantasy .......2006-02-08

In Slievmordhu, Jewel lives a wonderful life showered with love from her family until King Maolmordha's troopers kill her parents. Unbeknownst to Jewel, her savior, Step-Uncle Eoin feels remorse for causing this tragedy all because he was jealous of her father Jarred for being married to the woman he loved Lilith. Knowing he placed his beloved niece in danger, Eoin takes her on a perilous journey through the Great Marsh praying he can get her to safety in the nearby kingdom of Narngalis. He has yet to tell her that he revealed to the king's minion that she and her father were the last descendents of the feared sorcerer Janus, making her a pawn to open the Dome of Strang where the wizard's powerful secrets lie.

Eleven days looking over their shoulders, the wayfarers struggle until they clear the marsh. However, deadly unseelie wights capture Eoin. Jewel seeks refuge at High Darioneth where she meets the weathermasters and the Storm Lord Avalloc Maelstronnar-Stormbringer. She soon learns that Eoin is dead and finds solace with the people of High Darioneth until she learns that no one guards the Dome of Strang so decides it is time to learn about her roots.

THE WELL OF TEARS, the second entry in the Crowthistle Chronicles (see THE IRON TREE starring Jarred and Lilith), is a fabulous coming of age fantasy starring a wonderful heroine whose world is destroyed by the betrayal of a loved one. Eoin is an intriguing character though his time in the tale is short as the audience feels his ignominy of what he wrought. The story line is character driven with Jewel the focus of a fine fantasy quest to find out what truly flows in her blood.

Concentrating on the lives of blacks who achieved freedom, this book describes how, against formidable odds, they amassed property, established plantations, acquired dependent laborers, and lived for several generations as free and independent members of Virginia society.

I read this book for my college history class. It was a great look into a society that we know so little about. While reading this book you can see how America begins to slip into slavery with the treatment of Africans on the Eastern Shore. Some pieces of the history of Virginia are missing but Breen and Innes do a great job with what they have to work with.

5 out of 5 stars Blacks who achieved freedom..........2002-08-25

This is an excellent introduction to the evolution of black-white relations in mainland North America and to the development of racist attitudes based on cultural diversity.

Africans began arriving early in English-American history. Some of the first of these arrived in Virginia. A number of black Atlantic creoles, notably the Johnsons and Drigguses arrived in Virginia, managed to survive the tidewater massacre and other problems relating to survival and even to gain enough personal wealth to buy their freedom (or were subject to voluntary manumission due to appreciation for their outstanding service to their owners). These black former-slaves (and, possibly, some black indentured servants) set up plantations on Virginia's east shore (where the coast doubles backs around Chesapeake Bay) and established plantations. They owned slaves and purchased white indentured servants. In addition, because the racist aspects of slavery were still largely limited by the cosmopolitanism of the Atlantic creoles, several of the families intermarried with whites.

Slowly, over a period of time, an increasing number of non-creole blacks arrived as slaves and the distinct markings, customs and languages of the numerous new arrivals resulted in hardening racial sentiments. Some blacks, such as Anthony Johnson's grandson (also Anthony Johnson) began to consider Africa in a positive light as opposed to European racism and restrictions on the rights of free blacks - eventually leaving for less restrictive colonies, such as Maryland. Some were re-enslaved (not having been able to produce clear evidence that they were free and not having any living whites who could attest that their ancestors had been freed). As Ira Berlin (MANY THOUSANDS GONE) points out, some remained as relatively wealthy planters, such as Ezicarum Driggus even after such racist sentiment crystallized.

This should be read with Tommy L. Bogger: FREE BLACKS IN NORFOLK VIRGINIA 1790-1860:The Darker Side of Freedom and Earvin Jordan's BLACK CONFEDERATES AND AFRO-YANKEES IN CIVIL WAR VIRGINIA.

                5 out of 5 stars Ace!!.......2005-09-25

It is one of my favourite Voyager books. People welcomed the crew to their homes amd pretended to be friendly. They become very powerful and try to control them. Abit of a ghost story at the end. I enjoyed it very much. Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Would have worked better as an episode than a book.......2001-02-19

                The Plot:
Janeway and crew are in desperate need of shoreleave...and they receive an invitation from an uncharted planet to visit and enjoy the paradise nature of the lands. All is not necessarily as it seems, including the citizens' treatment of their pets, the Neffaler, which seem surprisingly intelligent, almost sentient. Add in Kes' pre-occupation and disturbing telepathic forces, Paris' involvement with the daughter of the leader, and Torres' desire to find the source of some dilithium signatures.

                What I Liked:
                Good descriptive prose.

                What I Didn't Like:
The story is long and rather confused at times. Many of the characters seem "off", perhaps reflecting the author's pre-occupation with the characters' lives early in the series' history. Lots of descriptions are heavy on the visual, which would be impressive if it was a TV episode rather than a book, but doesn't work as well here. The ending is rather fragmented, focusing on three different groups' of actions at the same time.

                The Bottom Line:
                3.00 lilpads out of 5.00.

This installment was a non-stop, action packed experience. I couldn't stop turning the pages, I read this book everywhere. Cox really captured the essense of this crew as well as the aliens involved.

At first when I read the blurb of the book it sounded really boring and I only bought it because I'm a Voyager fan, but once I started reading I counldn't put it down. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars Hmmm... Good book!.......1999-11-09

I liked this novel. I just couldn't put it down, and even though I sorta knew what was going on, I really enjoyed it. Hope to read more like this!

4 out of 5 stars A quality text for students and the educated public.......2001-11-11

This work sets a high standard for college-level edited history surveys. I assigned this work (or the bulk of it at least) for an African American History course in Spring 2001. It's traditional for students to dislike textbooks designed for classroon use, but this is far from the least popular one. There are many good surveys of African American history, and while none is completely satisfactory, "Upon These Shores" has several strong features. The level of expertise and writing of most chapters is extremely high; some of the premier scholars in the field are represented here, including Peter Wood, Gayraud Wilmore, and Charles V. Hamilton among others. The chapter bibliographies are very helpful, & the illustrations nicely complement the text. Ultimately, the deciding factor in assigning this book was the numerous well-chosen excerpts from primary sources embedded in the various chapters. This helped to acquaint students with the raw materials for doing history, gave direct access to Black voices from the past,and--not least--saved students money since they didn't have to buy a separate collection of sources.

"Upon These Shores" does have some drawbacks. It lacks an index, a minor but distinct annoyance. There is a good chapter on Black feminism, but coverage of African American women in other chapters is rather perfunctory, though the section on the antebellum gender division of labor is very insightful. The result is that Black womens' issues seem regrettably segregated largely into one chapter. "Race relations" is mostly defined in black-&-white terms, leaving readers less informed on encounters with other ethnic groups. Still, this work does not claim to be fully comprehensive, and what's here is quite good indeed. The course itself covered almost four centuries of history, really too much to do in one semester. I supplemented "Upon These Shores" with the following works: Olaudah Equiano, "Interesting Narrative;" David Walker, "Appeal to the Colored People of the World;" WEB DuBois, "Souls of Black Folk;" Anne Moody, "Comimg of Age in Mississippi," and shorter writings by Diop, Appiah, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs and Nat Turner.

                Book Description

A mosaic of memories from a childhood in the Warsaw Ghetto and a life in hiding on the other side of the wall

When six-year-old Michal Glowinski first heard the adults around him speak of the ghetto, he understood only that the word was connected with moving-and conjured up a fantastical image of a many-storied carriage pulled through the streets by some umpteen horses. He was soon to learn that the ghetto was something else entirely. A half-century later, Glowinski, now an eminent Polish literary scholar, leads us haltingly into Nazi-occupied Poland. Scrupulously attentive to the distance between a child's experience and an adult's reflection, Glowinski revisits the images and episodes of his childhood: the emaciated violinist playing a Mendelssohn concerto on the ghetto streets; his game of chess with a Polish blackmailer threatening to deliver him to the Gestapo; and his eventual rescue by Catholic nuns in an impoverished, distant convent. In language at once spare and eloquent, Glowinski explores the horror of those years, the fragility of existence, and the fragmented nature of memory itself.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful translation of a moving childhood memoir.......2005-09-06

The Black Seasons lets the reader share the fragments of childhood memories of a Jewish child survivor in Poland during German occupation and the Holocaust. This brilliant translation of Michel Glowinski's recounting of his childhood memories is a valuable contribution to the understanding of the experiences of Jewish families in Poland during the time of the "industrialized mass murder", and at the end also shares the reflections of the author at a later time in his life. This book is unique in that it is the honest recounting of fragmentary childhood memories of a time of constant unspeakable fear, told in articulate and eloquent language.

If you still think of short stories as the ugly little stepchildren of the mystery genre (forgetting that the likes of Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammet, and Jim Thompson learned their craft in this form), here's a handsome collection from Black Lizard that should change your mind. Skillfully edited and introduced by James (Six Days of the Condor) Grady, who also contributes a fine little gem, the book offers tempting appetizers from the likes of James Lee Burke, George Pelecanos, and Julie Smith which--at the very least--should make you hungry for their longer works.

                  Book Description

In Unusual Suspects, America's most acclaimed crime writers, along with some authors rarely associated with the genre, contribute fifteen new stories and two rediscovered classics to this riveting anthology.

James Lee Burke, author of the bestselling Dave Robicheaux mysteries, gives us a feverishly atmospheric tale of racism and moral courage on the Louisiana bayou. From the files of Jim Thompson, the godfather of American noir, comes the story of a murder with a victim so nasty we defy anyone to shed a tear far him. And Joyce Carol Oates shows us how a sudden brush with violence can turn a public servant into a public enemy. The result is a deliriously pulse-pounding collection that proves that although crime doesn't pay, it can help a good cause.

All the stories in this collection of crime fiction have been donated to benefit Share Our Strength, a Washington, D. C.-based nonprofit organization that combats hunger, poverty, and illiteracy.

Typical of most anthologies, some stories are clever, some entertaining, some funny, some boring, some touching... I can't really say which stories are best, since it really depends what style you like. Probably there is something for everyone but not everything for someone.

5 out of 5 stars Straight From the Heart.......2003-12-16

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I found it uplifting and refreshing. I couldn't put it down and I know it will be one that I will re-read again. Far from being preachy, Merrill relates his life experiences and spiritual reflections in a deep yet simple manner as it pertains to every day life. Thank you for this book Merrill! It is inspiring and worth the ten years it took to bring it about.

5 out of 5 stars Good News for all believers.......2003-11-04

This book does not deliver, or promise to deliver chronological or sensational information about the lives of the Osmond family. What it does do is explore several aspects of Merrill's life and how he dealt with them to become closer to God and feel His love. For those who believe, of any faith, it is a testament and a validation. For those interested in the Osmond family, it provides gripping, moving, and humorous stories. And for truth-seekers everywhere, it provides the best reason of all to keep going: love of God.

I should have known better. I was expecting an honest and forthright book outlining the real story behind the Osmond family and their struggles. All this book is is an attempt to further promote their religious faith. Hardly worth the paper it is written on. I read not even half of it and had to close the pages. I rated it one out of sympathy.

4 out of 5 stars From Merrill's Heart to Ours.......2003-05-04

What the book may lack in length and continuity is made up by Merrill's heart-felt desire to share the Source of his faith and strength with us.

If you have read Donny and/or Marie's books, then Merrill's honesty in sharing difficult and even dark experiences will come as no surprise. If you have not, then you may find it hard to believe that behind that smiling family exterior were some challenges that some fans might find hard to believe.

Yet, the book is not a tell-all expose. Rather, it is a testament to the love of our Heavenly Father for each one of us, even in times of our greatest despair.
