Beautifully illustrated with over 150 paintings and drawings, With Child celebrates the wonder of pregnancy and motherhood. Drawing on the vast, inherited body of wisdom of mothers around the world, expert Deborah Jackson has translated ancient rituals and myths into practical knowledge that will instruct and encourage mothers (and fathers too). From ancient fertility rites and lore about conception to the folk mythology of labor and aboriginal beliefs about the first months of life, With Child takes us around the world and through the ages in a fascinating presentation of panhuman maternal wisdom. Learn why the ancient Greek tradition of having a doula, a full-time mother’s assistant trained in the transition between pregnancy and motherhood, is regaining popularity for modern women. Discover the traditional way to plant a birth tree; herbal remedies to stop your baby from crying; yoga techniques for pregnancy; how to conduct a naming ceremony; or how to use feng shui to plan the baby’s sleeping place. Charting an inspirational course through pregnancy, birth, and early motherhood, With Child is the perfect gift for mothers and mothers-to-be, a beautiful and unique volume to be treasured and shared by all parents.

2 out of 5 stars Nice coffee table book but not much substance.......2004-01-29

I think this is a lovely little book, particularly the drawings! This makes a nice coffee table book or one to kind of skim through. But if you're in search of serious information regarding traditions and wisdom, you'd do better to find a book with more substance. Pam England's book Birthing From Within, for example, not only provides many of the same suggestions for rituals, it also provides a lot of great information to help prepare one for labor. A book that looks at current infant-rearing traditions in different cultures is Meredith Small's Our babies Ourselves: how biology and culture shape the way we parent. Small's book is fabulous- gives you a lot to think about in terms of how cultural beliefs influence our values and parenting choices.

5 out of 5 stars Birthing is a rite of Passage.......2000-03-26

Nothing can be more fulfilling than the creation of life. When you are expecting your own child you are filled with creative energy and usually have a strong desire to express it. Reading With Child will help you find so many ways to explore the feelings you have by offering suggestions of rituals to do that will help fulfill the need to connect with the birthing power of other women. Filled with traditional birthing wisdom and cultural traditions this book helps you to really feel in tune with pregnancy and birth as it is viewed around the world.

3 out of 5 stars Forgetting the Accessories.......2006-11-17

While this book features some interesting facts and pictures, I was very disappointed to find that the author almost completely disregards Jackie's use of accessories. I had hoped to learn about the handbags Jackie used, but despite brief references to her clutches, the only time he talked about them was to wrongly call the Gucci 'Jackie' bag - named after the woman herself - a Hermes tote. He also craftily avoids the subject of her shoes. Disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars A LEGEND!.......2006-01-14

Having grown up in the 60's, and being a Fashion Major as well as a big fan of Jackie Kennedy I was excited to read this book, and pleasantly surprised with Mulvaney's perspective on Mrs. Kennedy's wardrobe. I own many books on Jackie Kennedy and was particularly impressed with the photos and information presented in this book on this fashion icon. I read this book from cover to cover in one day. The photos are stunning, and images of Mrs. Kennedy through her husband's White House years as well as post years are presented in black and white along with color. If you are a Jackie Kennedy admirer, or a Fashion History buff; this is a phenomenal book to add to your collection...well worth the hardback price anywhere!

4 out of 5 stars the clothes of camelot.......2005-05-26

I absolutely loved this book. Jackie just looks so beautiful. Her fashion sense is remarkable. And she looks so elegant and beautiful. She was simply the greatest.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent record of 60's style as seen thru the eyes of JO.......2003-11-09

I am not a die-hard Jackie O fan, but I love fashion in general. I have always thought of Jackie O as a fashion icon, and wanted to learn more about her. Until now, I have never seen a book that pictorally does her sense of style justice. However, in this book there are enough photographs both in black and white and in color to satisfy any fashion junkie or Jackie O fan. No matter what the situation, Jackie O was always appropriately and fashionably attired. This book does an excellent job of showing this by portraying her clothing choices through the years and in a variety of categories. This book does not go into great detail about Jackie O as a person or historical figure, I don't think it was written with those objectives in mind, but it should satisfy the fashion cravings of most people. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Chic at its best!.......2002-12-03

Who else, in all the other First Ladies, could have worn all those beautiful clothes with the chic and style Jackie had! Not many I guess. In this beautiful book, there are some never seen before pictures, that demonstrates what elegance in fashion is all about. It will take a long time before we can see that again in the White House. I treasure that book that makes me relive that unique period of refinement and class that once was in the White House, thanks to Jackie!

4 out of 5 stars Can't wait until the end.......2007-05-06

Although, the entire Angel Sanctuary series gets a 5+ stars from me, this is not really one of the better volumes. I guess I was expecting the 19th to at least answer some questions and save the rest for the 20th. Instead, it answered practically nothing and added yet more confusing stuff for the 20th book to explain. I really was fairly confused by it. It's one of those volumes that feels like a "transition" between two novels: more to set up for the next one rather than have much significance in and of itself. Of course, I guess that is the genius of Kaori Yuki: to keep us anxiously waiting for what is to come.

This volume contains a few Alexiel flash-backs but they are rather vague and though Alexiel might know more than she's letting on, Setsuna is thoroughly confused by what he sees (as am I). We find out a little bit about Alexiel and Lucifer's first meeting (although it's only a few pages long and doesn't go into all that much detail). A rather surprising character does appear (which most fans of the story will probably like). Sara, possessed by Sandalphon, wanders around trying to get to Entemenki, killing everyone in her path. Probably the most interesting turn of events happens with Katan, who realizes where Rosiel has gone, and abandons his post and everything, his mind solely bent on finding and saving Rosiel. He says, "Its the reason I was born into this world." However, overall, not that much truly happens.

I can't wait for the next one. It's sure to be good. (The very last page of the 19th is very, very surprising and a total cliff-hanger.)

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-05-06

A lot happens in this novel. Rosiel is plotting something, Lucifer at his side, and again, shuts Katan out, preferring to have Lucifer tend to him. In truth, Rosiel's body is degenerating and he doesn't want Katan to see him how he is. Katan worries over Rosiel as Lucifer and Rosiel make plans to try to reach Atziluth and get the Tablet of Heaven so that Rosiel can get back his body. Meanwhile, Sara, possessed by Sandalphon escapes from Raphael's care. There is a brief appearance by Mad Hatter, and one of Lucifer's wives. Kurai enters the story again (although, she plays a minor role in both this volume and the next). The climax of this volume is a fight between Kato (who's body and mind are starting to fall apart from the wound inflicted on him by Lucifer) and Lucifer, followed by a very bitter-sweet ending.

Depressing though the end of this volume is, it's really truly beautiful. Tons of very nice full-shots of Lucifer, throughout, as well as of Rosiel. Kato is drawn slightly different than before but he's still recognizable. Overall, this volume is action-packed, full of twists, and fun to read (like most of the series).

4 out of 5 stars Angel Sanctuary Series.......2007-01-21

I was turned onto this series just by it's beautiful artwork. The syle is truely unique and angelic...no wounder it's about angels.

The story starts off as a young teenage boy soon finds out that he is in love with is sister! As if that could be strange wait till you here this. The boy, Setsuna, is the re-incarnation of one of the most powerful angel's in history; and now people all over heaven and hell want him.

What will it take to convince Setsuna, that he is greatly needed by humanity...

I hope you thought this useful...

      Hypnotic~

      5 out of 5 stars Angel Sanctuary.......2006-10-20

This book is mainly focused around Setsuna Mudo and his forbidden love with his little sister Sara. Things get complicated almost immediatly (as it has a plot, a subplot and lots of extras), angels, evils, monsters, evil cd-roms that kill you and craziness insue.

Basically Setsuna is the reincarnation of the Organic Fallen angel Alexial, who has three wings, incredible power and a physchotic twin brother, Rosiel who she 'failed' to kill in the great battle. His best friend is Kira, who seems to be guiding Setsuna, and has been following Alexial through her multiple rebirths. Sara, Setsuna's sister and lover seems like just a normal girl, but is she? Many other seemingly 'background' characters come into role and the whole story starts rolling.

The drawing is so beautiful, I've been turned into a complete Kaori Yuki worshipper. I own her artbook and have read lots of her other works (I recommend Godchild). The characters are so gorgeous, you'll fall in love with them.

The plot is very very twisted and intricate. You have to read the volumes in order, otherwise it will make no sense. I have reread the first few volumes many times to understand (the first volume especially, as the first few pages don't focus on Setsuna) I first read this when I was about 12, so it was desperatly confusing, but it gets easier to read as thigns start falling into place. It's one of those things where all of a sudden a lightbulb lights up and you totally understand everything that happened.

It's such a great manga, it's so gorgeous and has a gorgeous story to go a long with it, what more could you want?

5 out of 5 stars Angel Sanctuary: Angels, Demons, and Sinners.......2006-04-19

      Book:

Setsuna is a confused teenager, that girls would die to have, he is somewhat of a player but he only loves one person...his sister Sara. He knows that it isn't right and so he tries to avoid her but in the proccess he gets mixed up with a bunch of demons that say he is the reincarnation of a really powerful angel.

      Does Sara love him...

      You find out...

      -----
      My Opinion:

I enjoyed this book in fact I love the series and the art work. I find it funny and at the same time it has that element of seriousness...now I'm not one to encourege insestious relationships but this book didn't bother me to much about it...

I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

5 out of 5 stars its like the lord of the rings. only better. .......2006-04-16

many reviews say angel sanctuary is not for beginers. to many plot lines, is the major complaint. however, if youve ever read series of novels such as 'a song of ice and fire' or 'wheel of time', then i think you could pick this up easy. as long as you start from the begining.
that said, on to the actuall review.

first of all, the artwork. in a word, brilliant. kaori yuki is one of my favorite manga artists for this work alone. stylish without being to over the top, angel sanctuary is beautiful. also, pick up the art book that goes with the series.

the story of angel sanctuary is one of the best ive ever read. the main charactar, setsuna, is a 15 year old kid who has a few problems. his parents are divorced, he gets beat up, and apparently he is the reincarnation of a (female) angel who, a long time ago, rebelled against god. as if that werent enough, he is in love with his sister sara. some might say, "oh, thats disgusting!", but really, thats one of the parts that makes this story so interesting. its a true love story.
later on in the series, it gets very violent, and the incest theme is intensified, so the strictly religios or weak of heart, stay far away. as for age limits, i read it last year when i was 14, and i was hooked. (it was also my first manga.) still, i dont know to many 14 year olds who read as much as i do.

for my closing, this (along with the demon ororon) is the best manga i have ever read. the artwork is bliss, the story is (at 20 volumes) extremly well done. with tons of violence, exteremly good charactars, and a love story at the core, you cant get much better then angel sanctuary.

Brilliantly organized, using the categories of Adler's "Outline of Knowledge," The Experts Speak will educate the naive and entertain the cynical with its thousands of well-documented quotes by wise men and women, from Aristotle ("The brain is an organ of minor importance") to Albert Einstein ("There is not the slightest indication that [nuclear]energy will ever be obtainable"). Concise, well-written descriptions of the events that actually happened--usually at variance with informed opinion--add to the dry humor. If you've always wanted to be a self-assured talking head, The Experts Speak will make you an authority on definitive misinformation. --Rob Lightner

      Book Description

Did you ever have the uneasy feeling the experts
      are not . . . well, expert?

"Stocks have reached what looks like a permanently high plateau."
--Irving Fisher, professor of economics at Yale University, October 17, 1929

"Forget it, Louis, no Civil War picture ever made a nickel."
--Irving Thalberg's warning to Louis B. Mayer regarding Gone With the Wind

"We don't like their sound. Groups of guitars are on the way out."
--Decca Recording Company executive, turning down the Beatles, 1962

"With over fifty foreign cars already on sale here the Japanese auto industry isn't likely to carve out a big share of the market for itself."--Business Week, 1968

"There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in their home."
--President of Digital Equipment Corporation, 1977

"Bill Clinton will lose to any Republican who doesn't drool on stage."
--The Wall Street Journal, in a 1995 editorial

The Experts Speak systematically catalogues, footnotes, and sets straight these and a couple of thousand other examples of expert misunderstanding, miscalculation, egregious prognostication, boo-boos, and just plain lies. The experts have been wrong about everything under, including, and beyond the sun: time, space, the sexes, the races, the environment, economics, politics, crime, education, the media, history, and science. In this expanded and updated edition (now more error-filled than ever), we see just how much the experts don't know.  But the book also goes deeper, presenting a through-the-looking-glass chronicle of human knowledge: the story of what was and is so, as seen through the story of what we wanted to and did believe.

      5 out of 5 stars Very funny........2007-08-23

Great book - very funny. It is fascinating (and very educational) to see how wrong people can be. I will never believe in the word impossible again!

      5 out of 5 stars I have two copies it's so good!!!.......2006-01-07

      Hello,

This book is a great book. I have two copies of ¡§The Experts Speak.¡¨ I have one at my house for reference and then another in my classroom (I teach economics, sociology, and psychology) and that¡¦s for reference too. The book is full of quotes both famous and not from ¡§experts¡¨ both famous and not, who have made predictions, and relayed facts and/or opinions that we later see to be simply wrong. The book itself is funny and interesting. Funny, to see how wrong man-kind has been in the past, and interesting to see how we¡¦ve been wrong, but also on speculating how much we are wrong about now and what the future generations will look back and laugh at our current ¡§experts¡¨ for. The book is broad and this should be mentioned at there are sections on religion, science, inventions, music, war, gender, medicine, and so on¡K so there really is something for everyone!

Lastly, I am not making fun of official experts here, I think they are doing the best they can and I would trust an expert who spends all their time studying a field and is subject to peer review by the other brightest minds of their generation before I trusted myself or someone else. What I am finding amusing is the pride we sometimes have at thinking we really have THE answers now, and in the past ¡§they¡¨ were so dumb, and we are so enlightened ƒº

Finally, I hope you like my review and vote nicely for it! Thanks and have a good time shopping.

      4 out of 5 stars Highly enjoyable.......2004-11-26

This is a fun book of humorous quotations many about scientific predictions that were WAY off the mark. My favorites concern computers, and I've received some of them over the internet. Since I'm concerned about Urban Legends, this book was very helpful in discerning the veracity of these statements-though the authors are careful to point out quotes that could be Urban Legends or ones that have become part of the culture, whether historically accurate or not. Some good examples are:
Regarding Radio (and, perhaps now, cordless phones, cell phones, and Voice Over IP):
Well-informed people know it is impossible to transmit the voice over wires and that were it possible to do so, the thing would be of no practical value. (Editorial in the Boston Post, 1865
The radio craze ... will die out in time. Thomas Alva Edison
I do not look upon any system of wireless telegraphy as a serious competition with our cables. Some years ago I said the same think and nothing has since occurred to alter my views. (Sir John Wolfe-Barry, Chief Executive of Western Telegraph Company at their annual stockholder's meeting in 1907

      Regarding the development of computers:
Worthless. (Sir George Bidell Airy, K.C.B., M.A., LL.D., D.C.L., F.R.S., F.R.A.S., Astronomer Royal of Great Britain, estimating for the Chancellor of the Exchequer the potential value of the "analytical engine" invented by Charles Babbage, September 15, 1842. This resulted in the British government discontinuing its funding for Babbage. Today, however, Babbage is hailed as the inventor of the computer.)
I have traveled the length and breadth of this country and talked with the best people, and I can assure you that data processing is a fad that won't last out the year. (The editor in charge of business books for Prentice Hall, Inc., 1957
Where a calculator on the ENIAC is equipped with 18,000 vacuum tubes and weighs 30 tons, computers in the future may have only 1,000 vacuum tubes and perhaps weigh 1 ½ tons. (Popular Mechanics, March 1949. [Interestingly, I recently received a photo by internet of the predicted "home computer" from 1954-it was huge.]

      Personal computers:
It is quite impossible that the noble organs of human speech could be replaced by ignoble, senseless metal. Jean Bouillaud, member of the French Academy of Sciences, referring to Thomas Edison's phonograph.
What the hell is it good for? (Robert Lloyd, Engineer at the Advanced Computing Systems Division of IBM, c.1968, reacting to colleagues who insisted that the microprocessor was the wave of the future.
We don't need you. You haven't got through college yet. (Hewlett-Packard executive, responding to Apple Computer founders Steve Jobs' and Steve Wozniak's attempts to interest the company in the "personal computer" they had designed, 1976.
Get your feet off my desk, get out of here, you stink, and we're not going to buy your product. (Joe Keenan, President of Atari, responding to Steve Jobs' offer to sell him rights to the new personal computer he and Steve Wozniak had developed, 1976; and, of course, the very famous "quote":
640K ought to be enough for anybody. Attributed to Bill Gates, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft, 1981

1 out of 5 stars Misinformation, Misquotations, and Bad Sources.......2004-05-27

When a book claims to be "definitive" AND "authoritative" one might expect some level of accuracy and even a broadcast-quality fact checking. These authors use second and third party sources when inaccurately quoting reputable figures, even when primary sources are easily available. In three instances I researched, they claimed to "quote" from a book that has NO SUCH QUOTE! I own the source book and found it nowhere between the covers.

I was appalled at the extent to which this method is used in _The Experts Speak_, ultimately leading to the spreading of misinformation--not the cataloging of it. I personally checked the book for persons and subjects familiar to me to find that 3 of 4 quotes were both innacurate and the sources were mislabeled AND misquoted. The problem is so widespread, and the resulting misinformation seems designed to support a political agenda of the authors. Buy at your own risk.

3 out of 5 stars Is there life outside the U.S.A.?.......2003-09-04

The idea behind this book is very nice, and the authors are quite successful at making great deal of fun, at the expense of the learned (or sometimes not so learned) experts, who should have known better. Unfortunately for an international reader, the vast majority of the events and personae selected for the book deals with the U.S.A., and may be of little interest to people outside of that country. In particular, if the sections on politics or sports make you more than chuckle occationally, it is a clear sign that you've been watching way too much american television recently.
Overall, it is not a bad book - however, neither it is as hillarious as some reviews would make you believe.
