I've bought it twice!.......2007-05-07
I first bought this book as I considered opening a vintage goods shop with my mother. It was such a good resource, we each wanted our own copy. I found the information to be very useful as we mapped out our business plan and eventually opened our little shop.
The shop eventually closed when we had to give up our location, and cancer claimed Mom's life. I have been feeling the urge to have a shop again lately, and wanted to re-read the book. Apparently I've lent it to someone who never returned it to me! Mom's copy was nowhere to be found either, so I ordered another copy. A small price to pay for the information and guidance imparted within.
Turning Your Passion Into Profits.......2006-02-01
I just found this charming, useful and inspirational book on sale at a local book store. This collaborated effort by a Victoria Magazine contributor and successful small business owners like Debby DuBay, retired United States Air Force officer, was absolutely inspirational and had so many useful tips for a new business owner such as myself. I found information on my business plan and the small business administration, etc. In addition, I tried to contact many of the contributors to the book, but most I could not contact. I boldly contacted Ms. DuBay who enthusiastically provided me with many helpful tips on my new business! I love this book and highly recommend it for all! It is a timeless book!
Where is Victoria Magazine?.......2004-02-16
Written by the editors of Victoria Magazine who collaborated with successful women such as author, shop owner, retired Air Force Officer and Veteran Debby DuBay this book is a must. I have tried getting in contact with Victoria Magazine to no avail, but a few of the women they highlighted are still available to mentor women like myself. I am a professional woman who wanted to turn a passion into a career and Ms DuBay has been my mentor. Thanks to this book I was able to contact her. Highly recommend this book.
Inspirational, educational, enjoyable!.......2004-01-22
Wow! If you need a guide on how to turn your passion into a profession - I recommend this book. The experts have been used to provide input, and I love Debby DuBay's story in this book and in The Business of Bliss. The information provided about the Small Business Association is the best and I received a low documentation loan following the outline in this book! I owe my success to Janet and Ms DuBay. Highly recommend this book.
Inspirational, informational, must have book!.......2004-01-19
Purchased this book in Limoges Antiques Shop, Andover, MA from one of the contributors; Debby Dubay, ret, USAF and author of her own series on collecting Limoges porcelain. This book is remarkable and if you are considering starting your own business or turning your passion into a profession this book is a must. Debby DuBay credits The Business of Bliss and Victoria Magazine for her success - but her input was invaluable with the success of this publication.

In The Passion Dream Book Whitney Otto blends fiction and history to explore the tumultuous relationship between art and the lives artists chose in the service of their art. Otto weaves a story that shifts from the Italian Renaissance to the Harlem Renaissance of 1930s America. The novel--the second from the author of the well-loved How to Make an American Quilt--opens with the story of Guilietta Marcel, a young Florentine girl who spies on the artist Michelangelo while he sculpts the "David" in his studio and aspires herself to create art. Then we jump to the 20th century, where Romy March, a descendant of Guilietta, faces a related collection of difficult choices in the quest to become an artist herself.
Book Description
General FictionLarge Print EditionAn imaginative mix of fact and fiction, The Passion Dream Book travels from the Italian Renaissance where a girl spends her days spying on young Michelangelo, torn between wanting the artist and wanting to be the artist, and moves on to the twentieth century. Romy March and her partner, Augustine, lead the migratory lives of turn-of-the-century artists going from silent-era Hollywood, to the Harlem Renaissance and Paris in the late 1920s. From passion to betrayal, the Florence of Michelangelo to Hollywood, Whitney Otto applies the past to the present in a brilliant work of fiction.

Mixed review.......2007-07-05
Although I enjoyed this book overall, a few unrealistic aspects of the story bothered me. Romy, the main character, and her off-and-on lover, Augustine, went to grade school together at the turn of the last century. Although Augustine, an African American, attended a white school, an almost unheard of feat in those days, the author hardly mentions that this is an unusual phenomenon. Also, without proper preservation , it is unlikely that one of Romy's prized possessions, a box that her great (etc) grand mother made nearly four hundred years ago has not disintegrated. Also, is not realistic that people believe Romy, a half Italian and half run-of-the-mill American, is black. I am one hundred percent of Italian decent, have dark features, and rather "wiry" hair, and, although I can pass for many other ethnicities, I doubt I could pass for African American. Finally, Romy's personality was the most unrealistic aspect of the book. The reader can't get into her head, never knows exactly why she acts the way she does and why she doesn't do one of the two things she most desires (I don't want to spoil the book!).
But, if you are looking for a quick summer read, and are willing to leave some common sense at the door, this is a good choice. The chemistry between Romy and Augustine is nearly palpable, their love seems very real...but why, despite the scope of their love, is their relationship so rocky?
anticlimactic.......2006-05-24
The ending to this book left me feeling that something great had been started, and lost track of partway through the journey.
I picked this book up with no clue as to what it was about (the back cover gives no hints), but was intrigued by the title, and what I saw when I glanced at a few pages.
Early on, we're provided with back-story some generations prior to the main story of would-be artist Romy, her ambitions and meanderings, and romance with more successful artist Augustine. This back-story follows Romy's ancestor, Giulietta, living in the time of Michaelangelo, and is quite fascinating. Yet, Otto fails to properly return to Giulietta later on in the book. Instead, we end up focussing mostly on Romy (who I found a good bit less intriguing, perhaps because she's the same thing as Giulietta, but less fresh the second time around). Giulietta's life is wrapped up in an incredibly meagre referenace late on in the book, so insignificant I nearly missed it when I sneezed.
For such an intriguing title, I was left feeling like 'The Passion Dream Book' was little more than a needlessly extended love story with some interesting art history tossed for good measure. I enjoyed the journey in places, but ultimately left feeling gypped.
a beautiful journey .......2005-12-12
I wish I had a copy of this book to give to all my artist friends. I've heard it is out of print and I am at a loss at to why. Is it because the creative journey is unimportant to most? Not only is Otto's writing poetic, the lives of the characters she creates are poetry in themselves -- flawed and struggling, but earnestly seeking to discover their place in the world, and in a world that seems to not embrace the artists that gives it character and meaning.
A book to read again and again..........2005-09-17
I have read this book over and over again and each time I take away something different. It is the type of book that lets you see something about your own life each time you read it. If you are into art you will enjoy picking out the real life artists that she has woven in to her story. I love the little biographies in the middle of the book, it is a wonderful celebration of artists as real people and not just their most famous work. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has the soul of an artist.
A wonderful read, but I have one small bone to pick...........2005-07-01
I read "A Collection of Beauties" last week and loved it, so I immediately picked this one from my TO READ pile - I devoured it in two nights and one lunch break....How does she do it, how can she know SO MUCH about human nature? I swear she must have gone to school for psychology, or she is the most profund listener/observer of people. What I like about her writing is that her characters are hopelessly flawed, but they are true to themselves. Even the not-so-nice characters have something likeable or at least humorous about them, except Polly - I got so mad every time she showed up, she was always the catalyst for Romy's flight from Augustine and his irrational obsession with her kept them apart for so long! There are so many different personalities in her books that you're bound to identify with someone. The one thing I really didn't like about the book was how she wrapped up Giulietta's story - I wanted to know more about her, her father and the artists of her day and wish she'd spent more time on her story, letting us see what happens through her eyes. I also wanted to see what actually happened with Michelangelo - was he enraged like Giulietta thought he would be, did she tell him her secret? Perhaps we are supposed to imagine that it happened as Giulietta predicted, but I wanted to see for myself! That's the only reason this book got four stars instead of five.

Wow. Who knew a children's book could help an adult.......2005-09-30
I initially bought this for my teenage daughter who is a junior in high school and completely unmotivated to rise to her potential. My youngest daughter brought home the supplement to Weekly Reader--Career World or something, that was handed out in school and in it was a review of this book. I'm at my wits end when it comes to Dana and I am willing to try most anything, so I bought the book. Since Dana's very picky and hates most things that I buy for her, I decided to read the book myself before giving it to her. I was very surprised. With practical tips and exercises, I saw my own life in a new way and felt more inspired to at least consider again, my ultimate dream of owning my own business. I don't know if Dana will like the book, but I'm giving it to her anyway. My hope is that the inspiring text and stories will move her to get off her butt and explore the wonderful individual that she is.
COOL, but not at first........2005-09-30
My teacher gave our class this book to read and at first I hated it because i had to fill out information and stuff. But then I liked it because now I know that I want to draw or maybe own a deli like my dad.
GREAT!.......2005-09-29
My mom bought this book for me because i have been sad. My athma has gotten so bad so I can't play soccer anymore. I love soccer so I don't know what else I am good at so this book has helped me kind of figure it out. There is a workbook thing at the back of the book that is helpful and kind of fun. I recommend this book.

The Beginning of the End for Green Arrow.......2007-09-26
This was the story where Judd Winick first proved that he had no idea how to properly write Green Arrow.
Fresh from the grave, having turned his back on Heaven to save the life of his son, do the right thing and put right everything he failed to do in life before his untimely death, what does Oliver Queen - who not a few issues earlier in a story by Brad Meltzer almost proposed to his long-time girlfriend Dinah Lance.
He sleeps with a woman he barely knows - the niece of an alleged old friend - and is indirectly responsible for the same woman getting killed.
Even ignoring the continuity problems with this story (a google-search for "Tony Isabell +Judd Winick" will bring up multiple sites that will tell that tale), there's a wealth of other characterization problems. Not only is Oliver Queen party to a horribly out-of-character act of carnal knowledge but Jefferson Piece (aka Black Lightining) - the man who once retired from heroism when he thought he couldn't safely use his powers after he accidentally killed a woman - kills a man in cold blood.
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Green Arrow is fighting an ethically challenged, or even evil corporation who will stop at nothing to get the sort of real estate deal and development that they want, through.
His head is turned by a woman that it should not be, and this causes tragedy and a confrontation. He still has the criminals and the monsters to deal with.
A great sequel.......2006-02-19
Strait Shooter picks up where archer quest left off. It shows the even green arrow is human and makes mistakes. Also a seceond string chararcter like Black Lighting can be dangerous when provked.
By the numbers . . ........2005-01-06
This is the 4th TPB collecting the new Green Arrow; I just wanted to help clear up any confusion anyone might have when looking around at the trades and trying to figure out what happened with the missing issues.
The TPBs collect:
Issues #1-10: "Quiver"
Issues #11-15: "Sounds of Violence"
Issues #16-21: "Archer's Quest"
Issues #26-31: "Straight Shooter"
Issue #22 was a stand alone story, and Issues 23, 24 and 25 were part of a crossover story with Green Lantern's book, which does not seem to be released in trade form at this date.
AS to whether any of these are worth reading - they definitely are. I started collecting the book simply because Kevin Smith resurrected the character and based on his movies and his work on the Daredevil character, I gave it a shot. Oliver Queen quickly became my favorite DC comic character, with great apologies to the Bat, but the writers have just done a great job with this character.
Give it a try. the Amazon prices for the trades cannot be beat.
The Adventure Begins!.......2004-06-23
"Straight Shooter" is actually volume FOUR in the Green Arrow series rather than volume three as indicated on the cover. It follows the two volumes by Kevin Smith ("Quiver" and "The Sounds of Violence") and the volume by Brad Meltzer ("The Archer's Quest"). This book collects issues 26-31 of the regular series and marks the debut of new writer Judd Winick. The artwork on all four volumes are by Phil Hester and Ande Parks, an artistic team that is fast growing into the *definitive* Green Arrow artists of our generation (following the greats of the past generation: Neal Adams, Trevor Von Eeden and Mike Grell).
The *new* Green Arrow adventures actually begin with this volume. Kevin Smith brought him back from the dead and Brad Meltzer brought him back to LIFE after a self-examination quest. Judd Winick picks up the baton and runs with it, giving us the first new adventure of Oliver Queen in his own title. Winick understands the challenge of writing someone like Ollie and in my opinion, he's doing a fine job with his first outing. We have a story of Ollie going up against a "fat-cat" corrupt corporation in Star City, flirting with a young lawyer, stuggling with his doubts and childishness and finally the introduction of a scary villain in Drakon (a first step in creating a "rogues gallery" for Ollie).
"Straight Shooter" shows a lot of promise by the new creative team. I'm looking forward to future volumes by Winick and gang.

Book Description
It is a few decades after a revolutionary technology has given humans the ability to resurrect the dead. The ever-increasing population of the risen dead is segregated into areas called necrovilles. Here they have created a wild culture, untouched by the restrictions of the law - except that the dead cannot stray into the realm of the living, nor the living into the teeming necrovilles, after nightfall. It is November 1, the Day of the Dead. Virtual artist Santiago Columbar, creator of drugs and 'ware that melt and reconfigure reality for his many disciples, has grown bored with the realities at his command. There is one reality he has yet to try, the culmination of his life as an artist: He will venture into the forbidden streets of the Saint John dead town, and there walk willingly into the open arms of death. At Santiago's invitation, four of his friends will meet in Saint John to record his death and resurrection. On their way to witness Santiago's transformation, as the necroville erupts into the first volley of a revolution against the living, each will face danger and adventure in the wild streets of the dead...and find that life has changed forever.

Terminal Cafe will stir some thoughts...........2002-04-16
Imagine waking up, and realizing that you are dead? In the world created here by McDonald, nanotechnolgy has led to a method for reanimating dead people. Unfortunately, those reincarnated get to spend eternity as a vast slave/labor class, supporting the world of the living.
Needless to say, this sets up a predictable scenario of rebellion. However, where that scenario goes is unpredictable and, in my opinion, quite interesting. Author McDonald has created a lush "dead" culture, and most of the story takes place in the Necroville of Tijuana on the night before and day of "Day of the Dead." The main characters are a group of artists who meet in the titular cafe annually on this holiday to catch up with each other.
The details and substory lines grow and expand for the first half of the book, making it a bit hard to keep everyone and all their actions sorted out. For the second half, it begins an ever-tightening spiral, pulling all the details and characters back together until their final reunion.
Cyberpunk flavor without being too self-referential of the genre. The language has a lot of Spanish influences due to the setting and it provides a nice mix of feelings and expressions.
Incomprehensible.......2001-12-04
This was one of the very, very few books that I actually could not read. At all. The combination of bad writing, ridiculous premise and an excessive collection of side plots makes this book only marginally more entertaining than a core dump in hex. Now, I could be wrong - maybe the book gets better later on. However, I haven't been able to read enough of the book to actually find out.
I'd suggest Cyteen (by C.J.Cherryh) or Diamond Age (by Neal Stephenson) as books that deal with some of the issues that Terminal Cafe supposedly covers; however, these two books are pretty well written, so that a human being can actually comprehend them.
One of the all-time most inventive!.......2001-08-24
Ian Mcdonald seems to have an uncanny understanding of the human condition, of the primal urges and fears that drive us. If you changed the rules which govern life and death, which govern the very evolution of the human race, what will come of those urges and fears? That to me is the central question of Terminal Cafe. Once you've been dead, of what are you afraid? Nothing. If you can manipulate flesh and machine with equal ease, what could you be? Anything. One of my Top 5 favorite SF novels. Ian McDonald stands head and shoulders above the crowd of SF authors.
A Towering Achievement.......2000-07-19
(I always wanted to say that.) At once repulsive and enthralling, this book is a must-read for those who are not too easily offended. Reminded me of Varley's Steel Beach, though much darker.
The NanoTech resurrection of 600 million wax dolls.......1999-12-24
The First Resurrection of the Dead will start sooner than Terminal Cafe would suggest! My guess is that it will start in about 55 years.

Very good!.......2002-08-28
I am starring as "BB" in an amateur production of "Terminal Cafe" in October 2002. This play is written exceptionally well. I love the way Tuttle makes even the stage dialogue sound Southern. The play starts off happily, and they way it grows worse is fantastic. I recommend this for anyone to read, and try to find a way to purchase the rights if you're interested in putting this play on. It is VERY good.
Book Description
Three famous Malinowski essays! Malinowski, one of the all-time great anthropologists of the world, had a talent for bringing together in single comprehension the warm reality of human living with the cool abstractions of science. His pages have become an almost indispensable link between the knowing of exotic and remote people with theoretical knowledge about humankind. An important collection of three of his most famous essays, Magic, Science and Religion offers readers a set of concepts about religion, magic, science, rite and myth in the course of forming vivid impressions and understandings of the Trobrianders of New Guinea.

Malinowski's "Magic, Science, and Religion".......2000-03-31
The title essay was probably the single most influential article written by Bronislaw Malinowski. This 1992 reprint edition from Waveland Press is most welcome. The ideas in this essay have become so commonplace in anthropology that nobody seems to find it necessary to refer back to their original source in Malinowski. The essay itself is lively and still sounds fresh some three-quarters of a century after it was written. Malinowski is convincing when he points to ways that magic, science, and religion are closely related. After reading his insights, it isn't possible to consider that any one of them should always be given priority over the other two in our ways of thinking about the universe. Read this book and you'll learn some of the reasons why people try to solve their problems by choosing magic, science, or religion according to the specific circumstances in which they find themselves.
