Book Description
Robert Littell is a master storyteller of the highest caliber in the ranks of John le Carré, Len Deighton, and Graham Greene. The Once and Future Spy is a tale of espionage and counterespionage that reveals the dirty tricks and dangerous secrets of the subjects Littell knows bestthe CIA and American history. When the Weeder, an operative at work on a highly sensitive project for the Company, encounters an elite group of specialists within the innermost core of the CIA protecting a clandestine plan, the present confronts the past and disturbing moral choices are weighed against a shining patriotic dream. Inventive, imaginative, and relentlessly gripping, The Once and Future Spy is Robert Littell at his most original.
Customer Reviews:
Clever tale of espionage and madness, but not the author's best work.......2007-09-20
Robert Littell has written some of the best espionage novels ever, with "The Company," "Legends," and "The Sisters" rubbing elbows with the best works of le Carre and Graham Greene. With "The Once and Future Spy," Littell has created a quirky little novel that keeps the reader on edge literally up to the last page.
Littell is a master at creating unsettling tones in his books, and this novel is no exception. Our hero is "The Weeder," a CIA-trained historian whose job is to weed through the chaff of the intelligence world - raw data - to find useful wheat - actionable intelligence. The Weeder is a computer whiz, and toils away in his SoHo loft utilizing a computer program that turns literally any phone on its cradle into a perfectly-functioning bug.
The Weeder is also a man carrying a grudge - a former roommate once gave the Weeder's girlfriend some LSD, with tragic results. This former roommate is now Brian Wanamaker and also works for the CIA, but is up to no good. The Weeder has stumbled across Wanamaker's plot to explode a nuclear device in Iran but make it look like an accident caused by Iranian stupidity. Horrified by this betrayal of America's ideals - the Weeder subscribes to the Revolutionary War ethic of having our actions as well as our cause distinguish us from our enemies - the Weeder begins to send "love letters" to Wanamaker - correspondence letting Wanamaker know that the secret is out and to kill the plan.
But Wanamaker is an ambitious, ruthless man, and so he calls in Rear Admiral Pepper Toothacher (Littell is wonderful with names) to "walk back the cat" and plug the leak. And Toothacher, armed with a lifetime of intelligence work, a pair of assassins, and a dark secret, begins the hunt for the Weeder.
Sounds conventional, right? Wrong! This is Robert Littell, after all. The Weeder shares a fascination with American patriot Nathan Hale, and believes that they are long-lost relatives. The Weeder can fancy himself living "Nate's" life and become lost in the rivers of history. Littell tells Nathan's story expertly, but eventually the reader has to face the fact that the Weeder may in fact be a little nuts . . . is he imagining the whole thing?
Littell keeps the reader jumping back and forth on the question of the Weeder's sanity up until the last page. Nothing appears to be what it seems, even in the last paragraph . . . or does it?
I give this novel four stars merely because the story isn't as epic or sinister as Littell's best works, but that doesn't mean that "The Once and Future Spy" is anything less than a first-rate novel.
Is This The Same Guy Who Wrote 'The Company'?.......2006-09-29
How could the author of so great a book as "The Company" draft such a mediocre cliche-ridden effort as this. One reason, I submit, is that he couldn't make up his mind if he wanted to write a historical novel or a spy novel. He had a similar dilemma in "An Agent in Place" where he couldn't decide whether he wanted to write a love story or a spy story. "The Company" was a whole dimension above most spy novels. "The Once and Future Spy," sadly, is simply a uninspired work. The plot was highly improbable, the characters lacked credibility, and Littell resorted to too many cheap plot tricks to speed the book along, at the cost of believeability. Even the whole theme of "whose truth?" also is not all that unique. Don't want to give the ending away so I won't say any more about that except that, personally, I found the ending to be highly unsatisfying. I still have a few more Littell books to read and I am hoping that I will get from them the deep pleasure I got from "The Company." Littell's capable of much much better work than reflected in this novel.
What is truth?.......2006-07-03
This book displays Littell's genius at work. No it isn't 900 pages long. Instead it tells a story with eloquence and brevity.
What happens when one rogue CIA operation stumbles acorss evidence of another rogue operation? The answer is obvious, a third rogue operation is commenced to plug the leak and find the leaker.
That's the gist of the book without giving anyway any spoilers.
This book is not going to take a long time to read, but when you turn last page you might ask what happened? Many things, but which were true and which were fiction?
Once again Littell proves he is at the top of his game.
Great blend of spy fiction, conspiranoia, and history.......2006-04-01
A previous reviewer commented that the interwovcen tale of Nathan Hale "detracted" from the overall experience. I'd completely disagree, and found that it created an excellent parallel to the main plotline. He should perhaps re-read and see how it relates.
Aside from that, it's a page-turner that I found to be more a conspiracy thriller than a true spy novel (but maybe because he's "reinventing the spy novel" as some of the cover reviews claim). It also felt quite believeable as I can imagine various administrations attempting something along the lines of the scheme occuring in this book.
Halie.......2005-02-11
As an interpreter/teacher at Nathan Hale Homestead in Coventry, CT, it was with great interest that I picked up this book. Nathan Hale is Connecticut's "official state hero", and has been frozen in time as "the patriot-martyr-spy of the American Revolution." Well, the Nathan Hale that I know and admire was a twenty-one-year old kid with a desire to do something important for his country. Kind of like kids serving in the war in Iran. What I appreciate about The Once and Future Spy is Littel's depiction of Hale as a flesh and blood, passionate, adventurous young man. While this book may not be great history, and I don't necessarily believe in the accuracy of its speculation about Nathan's doomed spy mission, I do appreciate it for thawing out this frozen icon a little.

finally.......2005-12-30
This is my second review of this book. Now that I finally got it for Christmas I am finally able to figure out whats inside. For hardcore dragonology fans you may be disappointed. The calendar has almost all the same content of the original dragonology but different headers explaining what dragonological events occure during the months. However if you are a dragon fan and have not yet discovered Dragonology buy this. You will not be disappointed.
I need more info.......2005-10-23
I am an absolute freak for dragon books (the dragonology ones in particular). I own Dragonology,Dragonology Handbook and the 100 piece Dragonology puzzle. That is every dragonology book ever made ( except of course the calendar but I have seen a baby dragon book on ebay which may be a fake). However the only thing stopping me from buying it is thinking that it may be an exact copy of the original dragonology but in calendar form. So if anyone has any information on this book pleeeeeeeeeeease tell me.
Very Nice.......2005-09-25
This calendar is a very nice companion to the Dragonology book. It compliments the book well, and if you have somebody in the family that is interested in dragons, this is a nice gift to give.

Product Description
The destruction of Buffy's hometown, plus covert and powerful slayer "cells" around the world, add up to a new label for the Scoobies: Terrorist threat. Speaking of Sunnydale, the crater formerly known as, has opened to reveal the witch Amy, and boy is she mad.
Season Eight continues as Buffy creator Joss Whedon brings Buffy back to Dark Horse in this direct follow-up to Season Seven of the smash-hit TV series.
Customer Reviews:
And the story continues.......2007-04-22
Warning: Thar be spoilers ahead!
Remember each week those exciting words (which alerted us that we were about to get a new exciting episode of the best show on TV)? "Previously on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER . . . " The new comic series seems to be doing something along these same lines. On the inside of the outer cover are printed the following:
"This story takes place after the end of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Season Seven.
"The Slayer population of the world has gone from two to nearly two thousand. Almost five hundred are working around the world with Buffy's organization in squads--or "terrorist cells," according to the American military. Buffy, Xander, Dawn, and a passel of Slayers are currently bunked out in a Scottish castle, where the latest mission revealed a strange symbol carved into human bodies.
"Also, Dawn's a giant."
This may be a summary that is rewritten each month to reflect what has happened in the previous issues.
The first episode in Season Eight established the situation; this one begins moving the story forward. The U.S. military (or rather, a military leader who has on his chest the strange symbol referred to in the monthly summary) has authorized Amy the witch and her army of zombies to go after Buffy and her cohorts. After the story begins with three very different approaches to training the new slayers by first Giles, then Buffy, and finally Andrew (who actually couldn't be said to be training them at all) we find Xander explaining why Dawn took the form of a giant when it was possible she could have assumed other forms instead (obviously, she is trying to get her sister's attention in the most blatant manner possible). The catch is, does Xander really tell any of this to Buffy or is it all just part of what we later learn is a spell-induced sleep in which she experiences an unbroken nightmare. And in a fairy-tale twist she can only be awakened by the kiss of true love. We can, of course, imagine a line of possible candidates for that: Angel and Spike fighting to be first in line. Well, of course Buffy will be awakened, and sooner rather than later. Can't imagine her being asleep at the end of the next episode. The tricky part is how one defines "true love." That needn't mean romantic love. My gut tells me that the kiss won't come from any of the usual suspects. My money is on Dawn. Yeah, I know. No one likes Dawn. But the brute fact is that except for struggling to save her in Season Five, Buffy has been a truly awful sister. Not in a Cinderella step sisterly way, but in the completely neglectful, can't-spare-her-a-minute way. But early in Season Six, Dawn seemed to miss her more than anyone. Like I said, my money is on Dawn.
The issues ends with Buffy asleep, the castle under assault by hundreds of zombies they can't keep at bay, Amy gloating that she could handle slayers with ease, so there was no one there who could take her on. The final frame is of someone who says that they would "like to test that theory." And thus Willow makes her first appearance in the story.
I am going to say something that I don't think I can say often enough. I don't want Joss Whedon writing comics. I want him creating new television shows. I suspect he enjoys the control that a comic gives him. I am sure he is tired of battling studios and networks. I can understand that. But once the battles have been waged and the BS has been waded through, Joss Whedon has been able to create some of the most extraordinary, most timeless television that has ever been made. He needs to get back to it. That being said, I am so much happier with him doing BUFFY Season Eight than either his X-Men project or the Runaways (and mind you, I like both the X-Men and the Runaways). There are others who can tell further stories about the X-Men and the Runaways, but Joss Whedon is only one who can give us authoritative Buffy stories. So I am acquiring these with joy and my heart and impatience in my soul. But I want him back in television. We've had some great TV since BUFFY and ANGEL left the air. LOST, 24, VERONICA MARS, and especially BATTLESTAR GALACTICA have filled the huge gap BUFFY left at its departure. But LOST needs to start winding down (whether it will has to be seen), BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (the only show to completely match the brilliance that was BUFFY) has possibly only one more season left and at most two before Ron Moore brings his series to an end. 24 is definitely in decline. VERONICA MARS might be cancelled. In short, JOSS! WE NEED YOU TO COME BACK TO TELEVISION! But in the meantime, I'll wolf down every one of these issues.
Episode Two: Attack of the Rat.......2007-04-05
Buffy fans will be expecting a lot after seven stellar seasons on television and the success of the first issue of "Season Eight." So the question here is this: Does Issue #2 deliver?
In short, yes. I have to say though--there is so much going on, so many jokes, and so much foreshadowing that I wasn't able to completely enjoy the Jossy goodness until my second read. The first read intrigued me, but the second wow-ed me.
The plot continues directly from the previous issue. Amy (the former rat) is working with the government to take out Buffy and the slayers, and she has an army of zombies to back her up. The ending sequences are amazing--I'm already itching for May 2nd to come so I can get my hands on the third issue. There was a big revelation about half-way through the comic, and clues to who the Big Bad of the season will be as well. Giant Dawn is great, Buffy is true to herself, and Xander is playing the biggest role he's played since the first season.
This issue also re-introduces two fan favorites: Giles and Andrew. So, all in all, this issue is just as good as the first. But did anybody expect anything less? I mean, come on--Joss Whedon wrote it.
9/10

Customer Reviews:
My only complaint- too short!.......2005-08-16
Batman and Spiderman team up to take on villains Kingpin and Ras Al Ghul. I believe that Dematteis does a superb job with all four characters. Spider-man is a wise-cracking but compassionate man who has an overwhelming sense of responsibility. Batman is a dark, menacing figure with no super-powers. Perhaps the only reason he teams up with Spiderman well is because he identifies with Spidey's strong sense of responsibility. Kingpin is a scheming, criminal mastermind, which lends itself to a good plot twist near the end of the story. Ras Al Ghul is a self-proclaimed visionary and savior who believes the path to salvation involves rebuilding the world after nearly wiping out its population.
The Demon plans once again to upset the balance of the earth. He approaches Wilson Fisk, believing that the Kingpin can finally help him realize his ideal. However, betrayal is very likely with these two. What will happen when they team up?
The story and dialogue are very well done. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer.

The Meaning Of The Holy Quran (Meaning of the Holy Quran)
ASIN: 0915957884 |
Book Description
This is deluxe, hard-cover bound translation of the Holy Qur'an into Spanish, with the original Arabic text side by side. A new, masterful translation by Dr. Kamel Mustafa Hallak.
Customer Reviews:
Bello Libro.......2007-07-18
Un libro bien compuesto con bellas ilustraciones del texto original y un diseño elegante. El lenguaje usado en la traducción es claro y el prólogo y traducción del alfabeto árabe fueron agradables sorpresas.
Faithful translation.......2005-12-27
For a while I have been looking for a Spanish translation of the Koran and I received this 1998 edition published by Amana as a gift from a brother. The version in hand is hard bound imprinted with a nice golden Islamic frame design embracing the title, the name of the translator and the publisher on a contrasting dark navy blue color. The left side of the cover is in Spanish and the right side is in Arabic making the book to look and feel like a classical Islamic book. The book contains 1262 pages. It starts with a general index followed by the editor's word, a prologue and the translator's preface. These pages are followed by a pronunciation guide for the Arabic alphabet and a useful table for the biblical names and their corresponding Arabic pronunciation. A complete index for the names of chapters (Suras) is placed just before the first chapter of the Koran. The names of Suras and their corresponding number and starting page are given in the index in both Spanish and Arabic. The actual translation starts on page 12 with Spanish on the left-side page and the corresponding Arabic text on the opposite/right-side page. This layout is convenient for learning the Koran in Arabic. The Koranic verses are numbered on both the Spanish and Arabic sides, which is good for those who are learning Arabic. The number of composing verses of each chapter and the name of the city in which verses were revealed is given at the beginning of the relevant chapter.
The font size for both the Spanish and the Arabic texts and the soft "vanilla/very light beige" color of the paper make it easy on the eye for reading even for extended hours.
The translation flows natural and seems to sincerely reflect the Arabic meaning. In many instances, however, the Koranic language requires additional explanation that cannot be easily conveyed without some background knowledge. For example, the first verse of the second chapter of the Koran is a mysterious code that reads simply Alif, Lam, Mim (A.L.M) that cannot be translated. However, I found that the more I read of the translation, the more I like it. I enjoyed reading chapter 12 (José/Yusuf) and chapter 36 (I.S/Yasin) tremendously. I was stunned by the faithfulness of the translation and by the ability of the translator to render the Koranic beauty into Spanish. So there is an element of eloquence and it seems like the translator has put a lot of efforts into selecting his words carefully to convey the meaning and to hint to the melodious construction of the Arabic verses.
I also like the use of Spanish names instead of Arabic because that makes reading easier. For the Spanish reader, it is much easier, for example, to identify with biblical names like Dios, Isaac, Jesús, Juan, and José than their corresponding Arabic names. It makes reading much easier.
I have not completed reading the whole translation, but I found it smooth, easy to follow and simply beautiful. It deserves my rare 5-star rating and I recommend this translation to all Spanish readers.

First Impression.......2001-10-26
In the Name of God, the Compassionate the Merciful
I'm profoundly grateful to come across a copy of a bilingual version of the Holy Qura'n in original Arabic text and Spanish translation. Such attampt is a major contribution to the Spanish language in terms of Islamic studies as well as litrary and linguistic encounter. Qura'n signifies eternal presence in the hearts and the minds of Muslims around the Globe. To share its values, teaching, poetic miracles, and its universal themes, is a highly blessing process which ment to share happiness and wisdom with all humanity. Although, I have encountered with previous translation of Qur'an into English, yet, when it comes to Spanish that's to me a celebration and mix of world's cultures. For Spanish language has top priority in our time.
Qura'n is a highly stylistic poetic masterpiece. Its themes, stories and importance are beyond the level of admiration; that's why it requires intense efforts and faithfull dedication to comprehend it in order to pass it and convey its essence to the rest of the world with spirit of generousity. Translation remains a tool to convey the meaning but we may lose the beauty and the poetic of the original language of the book, the book whose words accepted by Muslims to be the words of Allah as revealed to Prophet Muhammad by the Angel Gabriel.
I wish the translater all the best , and to the reader all the benefit and enjoyment.
Very truly Yours,
Salah

The best Spanish translation ever!.......2001-03-31
This translation of the holy Quran is really impressive. Dr. Hallak uses contemporary Spanish in a clear language, which makes reading it an enjoyable experience that touches the mind, the soul, and the heart. Unlike other Spanish translations, this one reflects the Muslim's view and interpretation of the Quran. As a relatively new convert into Islam, I would say that reading through this book strengthened my believe in God and reaffirmed my faith in the universal and eternal message of Islam. I commend Dr. Hallak for this great work and I recommend this translation for every person who seeks to understand the nature of Islam and the essence of the Islamic faith.
