Book Description
Nawal El Saadawi's books are known for their powerful denunciation of patriarchy in its many forms: social, political, and religious. Set in an insane asylum, The Innocence of the Devil is a complex and chilling novel that recasts the relationships of God and Satan, of good and evil. Intertwining the lives of two young women as they discover their sexual and emotional powers, Saadawi weaves a dreamlike narrative that reveals how the patriarchal structures of Christianity and Islam are strikingly similar: physical violation of women is not simply a social or political phenomenon, it is a religious one as well.
While more measured in tone than Salman Rushdie's Satanic Verses, Saadawi's novel is similar in its linguistic, literary, and philosophical richness. Evoking a world of pain and survival that may be unfamiliar to many readers, it speaks in a universal voice that reaches across cultures and is the author's most potent weapon.

haunting.......2001-10-04
I was confused when I started this book because I was expecting a more conventional narrative. However, the style and beauty of the writing was captivating. Full of flashbacks, trains of thought and bits of remembered conversation, if you read it with the view of immersing yourself in the world of the heroine, the story makes complete sense and stays hauntingly in your memory. One of the surprises is that, though you think the heroine is the only one harmed by the religious conventions of her day, you come to realize that her husband has been equally harmed. Terribly sad and beautiful, but vivid and fascinating.

better than the first 2 books, but still not great.......2006-07-26
This third book in its series appears better written than the first two. Perhaps Turtledove pulled his socks up and paid more attention to the writing. At times in the book, there are actually interesting plot developments of some sophistication.
However, if you really do like Turtledove's writings, you will see better in his other series, like the Civil War tomes.
You might wonder about the previous reviewer, Craig, who commented how this is a good first work by Chernenko. Was that tongue in cheek, or did he even read the book? It says on the front cover that it is by Turtledove. Probably because the publisher wanted to attract more readers. Who unfortunately may not get all that they hoped for.
Masterful.......2005-04-15
Dan Chernenko pulls off a great finale to the Scepter of Mercy trilogy with his final volume, The Scepter's Return. The author sticks to the style that worked so well in the first two books, and keeps the story interesting for the reader right to the end.
What really struck me about this series is the stark humanity of the central characters. No glorious heroes here, just men and women with all of the foibles and flaws that make us all who we are. Some of the interchanges between these characters are funny enough that I had to stop reading because I was laughing too hard.
Chernenko tops off his achievment here in the fashion I have come to expect from him. The theme of people not necessarily getting what they deserve plays an important role in finishing this tale, and so do the weight of difficult decisions that surround the love-hate relationship between the two Kings that are central to the story.
A masterpiece, and doubly impressive for being Mr. Chernenko's first effort.

The connection with our spirit is like a phone line, explains Christina Baldwin in The Seven Whispers. "Sometimes I turn the ringer off. Sometimes I ignore the ringing. Sometimes I pick up the phone with suspicion. Sometimes I get impatient with the interruption." The irony, of course, is that "unlike a lot of other calls, the one from Spirit is the one we are hoping to receive." Baldwin (Life's Companion) excels in helping readers converse with the divine. Here, she devotes a chapter to each of the "Seven Whispers of spiritual commonsense":
1) Maintain peace of mind ("the cornerstone of a spiritual life")
2) Move at the pace of guidance ("rehumanize our speed of life")
3) Practice certainty of purpose ("a commitment to figuring out why we are here and what we are going to do about it")
4) Surrender to surprise (this helps us "practice the resilience we need to respond to whatever life offers")
5) Ask for what you need and offer what you can ("become spiritual traders of life's energy, time and abundance")
6) Love the folks in front of you ("look for the good in people even if we don't think it's there")
7) Return to the world (remove yourself from the simulated world and "return to the world of the body, the senses, the world of Nature")
This is a compact book, packed with a wise woman's spiritual homilies. While no one can make Spirit phone home more often, Seven Whispers will certainly eliminate the static and make for a better connection. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
In this eloquent work, self-exploration pioneer Christina Baldwin leads readers of all spiritual persuasions to listen intentionally to the voice within their soul: the voice of spirit. She does this by sharing seven meditative phrases — the wisdom gained from listening to her own inner spirit. Each chapter is built around one of these core phrases, and examples include "Maintain peace of mind," "Surrender to surprises," and "Ask for what I need and offer what I can." After years of bringing spirituality to others through circle meetings, seminars, and journal writing, Baldwin offers her insight to a wider audience with this compelling and accessible book.

Listening to the Whispers as Spiritual Practice.......2006-12-24
After reading Christina Baldwin's Whispers several months ago, I find myself coming back to it on a regular basis. Comapnioned by her book I am integrating the seven truths, the whispers, into my daily practice. Of the seven, the most persistent whisper for me is "Move at the pace of guidance." I am discovering how to move through life at the cadence of my inner knowing, honoring my wisdom, my gifts, and those of others. Christina's book is gently powerful, inviting the reader into that space where we recognize the "voice that invites a dialogue only we can hear."
As a clergywoman I have recommended the book for small group study. As a counselor I refer clients to it regularly. And personally, I feel that the holy is whispering to me through Christina's words.
A wise practice!.......2006-10-23
Christina Baldwin's "The Seven Whispers" has become a cornerstone text in my life. Rich with practical spiritual wisdom, Baldwin's stories and suggestions teach us how we might be more authentic people who can create a compassionate world. I've even started a Seven Whispers Study Circle so that friends and I can go deeper into each "whisper" and emerge the better for it. Thank you, Christina Baldwin!!!
Outstanding book--inspirational, helpful material!.......2005-08-31
Christina Baldwin has written a masterful book on the importance and wisdom of spiritual practice and guidance...and of cultivating the ability to listen to our inner voices. This material is compact, precise, and powerful and is a magnificent addition to the library for any serious student of authentic, spiritual living. Plus, Ms. Baldwin is a superb storyteller, and weaves beautiful tales throughout the book that any reader can strongly relate to. This is,very simply, an outstanding book!
Spirituality without Dogma!.......2004-12-09
I love Christina Baldwin's work and the way she is able to incorporate spirituality in writing and daily life without dictating a certain dogma. Her book is a wonderful boost to anyone's spiritual practice.
accessible wisdom.......2003-08-28
What I love about this book is that weeks later I can still remember Baldwin's seven whispers and have been able to incorporate them into my busy life. I know I should be doing a better job at whisper #2, "Move at the pace of guidance," but even at the pace I'm moving I find these lovely sayings and the essays that accompany them reside in my mind. Many times a day they float to the surface of my mind and help me stay connected to spirit all week long. This book lives on my bedside table and I read little paragraphs over and over. It's a great gift. I've bought half a dozen copies for people of different religious persuasions and they all like it as much as I do.

Very Entertaining Story.......2001-09-28
Whispers Through Time proved to be well worth the time to read. You may wish to also order Sherry Lewis' book titled, An Echo in Time, since it is the sequel to this book.
We begin our tale with a fellow named Kurt Richards, modern man, who just ended another relationship. Or rather, SHE ended the relationship. He has had a string of bad luck in love, mainly because he is devoted to protecting the historical ruins of Anasazi at Black Mesa, Montana. While on a stake-out to catch looters, he finds himself swept off a cliff into another time.
He wakes up in the year 1890 and finds himself without a place to stay and nothing to eat until a widow takes him in as her hired ranch hand. He discovers he is very much attracted to the lovely, dark Olivia. But then, so is the neighbor, Sam Evans. And Sam is not too friendly with Kurt.
Olivia struggles to maintain the ranch and it's surrounding property left to her by her late husband, Harvey. Considered useless land for farming or grazing, she finds herself unable to pay the upcoming mortgage payment to the smirking bank manager, Sloan Durrant. And really strange yet, he wants to buy some of the so-called useless land up on Black Mesa! Something is up, and Kurt knows what it is. Durrant is after the legend of a treasure, but won't ever find it if Kurt and Sam have any say.
The characters are written with the characteristic warmth of Sherry Lewis, and the setting description is satisfying. This is a story that doesn't forget the plot for just romance. Enjoy!

Great Love Stories centered around God and Lighthouses.......2007-10-07
This is a historical Christian romance. It contains four short novellas about less than 100 pages each. These books are about people finding their faith and finding love.
The first story is about a girl who believes her call is to tend the light. But when Ian falls in love with her and she falls in love with him, she begins to question what she is supposed to do with her life.
The second story is about a widowed captain who is ready to retire to a life on land. His daughter and him make through their last ride only because of the lighthouse keeper. She turns out to be the same person who has volunteered her house to him because the hotel was full. She has a few secrets of her own and Cade is willing to help her solve her problems.
The third story is about a couple in love. The boy is from a rich family and his fiancee is not. He works for his father as a captain. He goes on one last trip but does not return in time. Will he return alive? Will his family disown him? Will they never get alone with his choice bride?
The fourth story is about a widowed mother who married to early in life and was diwowned by her parents. She has no friends until a captain comes by to thank her for tending the light. This captain falls in love with her and her son, but he resolved never to marry. Does he have a choice when he finds out she went home?
These novels are filled with Christian lessons. If you do not enjoy reading romances that have Christian undertones, this book is not for you.
I recommend because the stories are endearing and informative of the life of a lighthouse keeper.

Four American lighthouses, with romantic appeal and secluded settings, are the backdrop for these four novellas by authors Andrea Boeshaar, Lynn Coleman, Sally Laity, and DiAnn Mills.
Customer Reviews:
Poorly Written, Full of Cliches.......2002-05-28
I couldn't get past the first two books in this set. The first seemed really dumb and contrived...we knew what was going to happen, the characters seemed flat, and it didn't really keep my attention. Book two further convinced me that this series was NOT worth reading and was more of the same mechanical writing and contrived plot. Disappointing. If you enjoy this type of book, I would recommend "Dakota" by Lauraine Snelling and "Colorado Wings" by Tracie Peterson.
Keepers Of The Light When Love Awaits........2001-03-25
My love of lighthouses drew me to this story. Though I was only able to read When Love Awaits, it's characters and description peak my curiosity to read the remaining story and the others in the book. If the other stories are similar to Lynn Coleman's work, then I will not be disappointed
A Charming Book Filled With Lighthouse Adventure!.......2001-02-26
This gem of a book tells four stories of women lighthouse keepers. The tapestry of characters with the blend in different writing styles was heightened by the beautiful backdrops.
In "When Love Awaits", a woman named Fiona falls for the persistant, Scottish Ian. In "A Beacon in the Storm", Amanda's one wish is to remain the lighthouse keeper - until she becomes sidetracked. With "Whispers Across the Blue" one feels the emotions of lovesick Jule praying for her fiancee who is out to sea. Lastly, in "A Time to Love", Eden has given up on love- but love has not given up on her.
A delightful, cozy read filled with inspiration and romance in the Lord's hand. This book is highly recommended!

With great reverence for the Bible, Dundes offers a new and exciting way to resolve some of the mysteries and contradictions that evolved during the Bible's pre-written legacy and that still persist today. Using his expert knowledge of folklore, Dundes unearths and contrasts multiple versions of nearly every major biblical event, including the creation of woman, the flood, the ten commandments, the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord's Prayer, and the inscription on the Cross.

Folklore or 'Multiple Versions of Same Stories'.......2005-09-17
"Dundes observed that variations in the oral tradition were preserved in the Bible precisely because of its sacred nature. To a folklorist, it is utter folly to attempt to reconcile such diversity." Patricia McBroom
Folklore is the ethnographic concept of the tales, legends, or superstitions current among a particular population, a part of the oral history of a particular culture. The academic study of folklore is known as folkloristics. The concept of folklore developed as part of the 19th century ideology of romantic nationalism, leading to the reshaping of oral traditions to serve modern ideological goals; only in the 20th century did ethnographers begin to attempt to record folklore objectively. While folklore can contain religious or mythic elements, it typically concerns itself with the mundane traditions of everyday life. Folklore frequently ties the practical and the esoteric into one narrative package. (Wikipedia)
Folklore in Oral Transmission:
My dad never described the Old Testament narratives as mythical, but he convincingly argued that since it was written after centuries of oral tradition was tinted with variants of ideas and theologies.
Most biblical scholars acknowledge that both the Old and New Testaments were orally transmitted for decades before appearing in written form. Dundes offers a new and exciting way to understand its variant texts, using the analytical framework of folklore to unearth and contrast the multiple versions of nearly every major biblical event, including the creation of woman, the flood, the ten commandments (as eleven or twelve), the names of the twelve tribes, the naming of the disciples, the transfiguration on the Mount, among many others.
Dundes on Biblical folklore:
Using his expert knowledge of folklore, Dundes unearths and contrasts multiple versions of most major biblical event, to helps us resolve some of the mysteries and contradictions that evolved during the Bible's prewritten legacy and that persist in the Great Book today. With great reverence for the Bible, Dundes offers a new and exciting way to resolve some of the mysteries and contradictions that evolved during the Bible's prewritten legacy and that still persist today. "No one was allowed to mess with the text," he said. "You didn't have some editor redlining passages and rewriting them."
Recently, Pellegrino contends that the biblical account of the Israelites' enslavement and flight from Egypt represents multiple migrations; that one of the pharaohs during this period was queen Hatshepsut; and that the parting of the Red Sea to facilitate the Jews' escape was actually a tsunami or tidal wave triggered by the Theran winds and dust cloud. He asserts that, if the biblical city of Sodom actually existed, it represents a telescoping of oral traditions from diverse places; one likely site, he believes, is Mashkan-shapir, now buried under Iraqi sands, a city which was abandoned by its inhabitants Ca. 2000 B.C.
The Bible as Midrash:
This method of looking at the Bible from a rabbinic different perspective, explained by Episcopal Bishop Spong:
"Midrash is the Jewish way of saying that everything to be venerated in the present must somehow be connected with a sacred moment in the past...It is the means whereby the experience of the present can be affirmed and asserted as true inside the symbols of yesterday."
According to a Midrash interpretation, the purpose of the parting of the Red/Reed Sea was to show the Israelites that God was on their side and that Moses could call on him for protection. The purpose of the second, third and fourth stories was to show that God continued to work through his chosen prophets in later times. They also show that the history of Israel is continuous, containing repetitive themes that link back to earlier events.
Interpreting the Bible as folklore:
Much past scholarship on the Bible has discussed folklore in the Old Testament, but relatively little has been done on the New Testament. Dundes said that, to his knowledge, no one has ever said flatly that the entire text is folklore.
"People say this is an oral tradition, but then they proceed to search for one true variant," said Dundes, "In oral literature, there is no such thing. This is not meant to be disrespectful, but people should stop worrying about the discrepancies among the stories. They don't matter. This doesn't mean the Bible isn't true, or that it isn't a sacred text," He hastened to explain. He states that even Books of the New Testament, were written seventy years after the death of Jesus, were several different versions of the same story to have arisen. To try to determine which is the "true" version is probably not that productive, said Dundes.
Multiple Versions of same stories?
Professor Dundes reports examples of what he describes as 'multiple versions of various stories' that appear in the Bible. He believes that these stories were circulated for decades and even centuries as an oral tradition. During that time, each version of the stories subtlety changed as it was circulated before it was recorded in written form. From the discrepancies among the various version of the same story, he concluded not only that the Bible contains folklore, but that the Bible is folklore. Dundes writes: "It simply means that the Bible is oral literature that has been written down, and the nature of oral literature is that there must be two or more versions of any story...the Bible clearly manifests the basic distinctive criteria of folklore: namely multiple existence and variation."
Dr. Alan Dundes:
Known as a world class authority on folklore, Alan Dundes, is a professor of folklore and anthropology, University of California, Berkeley. He has written over 30 books based on his studies of the oral traditions of many cultures. In more than 30 books he has unveiled the meanings in the oral traditions of many cultures.
It's about time someone wrote this book!.......1999-02-09
Alan Dundes, one of the U.C.Berkeley's foremost professors, has written a fantastic book again! He proves that the bible's source is oral literature (folklore), thus explaining the different versions of events throughout the bible. Dundes' book is the voice of reason in a sea of confusion surrounding biblical history.
