Book Description

When he had been at school for about three weeks, the boys called him Six-fingered Jack; but his real name was Willie, for his father and mother gave it him -- not William, but Willie, after a brother of his father, who died young, and had always been called Willie. His name in full was Willie Macmichael. It was generally pronounced Macmickle, which was, by a learned anthropologist, for certain reasons about to appear in this history, supposed to have been the original form of the name. . . . One evening in winter, when he had been putting coals on his grannie's fire, she told him to take a chair beside her, as she wanted a little talk with him. He obeyed her gladly.

"Well, Willie," she said, "what would you like to be?"

Willie answered without a moment's hesitation . . .

TIME passed, and Willie grew. Have my readers ever thought what is meant by growing? It is far from meaning only that you get bigger and stronger. It means that you become able both to understand and to wonder at more of the things about you. There are people who the more they understand, wonder the less; but such are not growing straight; they are growing crooked.

5 out of 5 stars A joy to read.......2007-01-11

For anyone who is fond of MacDonald's better known works for children (At the Back of the North Wind, The Princess and the Goblins, The Princess and Curdie), The History of Gutta-Percha Willie will prove a profound delight. The book is a particularly Scottish kind of novel of education (there is a quite a bit of engineering in it). The hero, Willie, is a lovable person who is allowed to develop and grow at his own pace by wise parents. The results of his untrammeled education are beneficial not only to Willie, but to his family and to the world at large.
This is a book not merely for children; like all great texts, The History of Gutta-Percha Willie lends itself to re-reading again and again over the years.

          Out of balance is bad.

The science world Proton has a fancy substance that keeps it going, and there is a sort of analogue on the fantasy world Phaze. Rapacious mining is not a good idea, apparently, and leads to an imbalance. This means Stile has to come up with a way to stop bad destructionness, which will involve a serious case of the splits.

          1 out of 5 stars Not a good ending.......2007-08-23

I usually like Anthony's books, and I enjoyed the first two of the Adept series. This one just seems pale in comparison. Too much happening to make much sense, too many unlikely events (yeah, even in a fantasy novel). Just didn't make any sense. The fact that no one seems much surprised about the existence of a parallel universe I can't help but find odd. Heck, what seemed like a huge secret in the first two books turns out to be common knowledge to the point where no one so much as blinks an eye. Winning the games, which had been a key focus up till now, has all the excitement of watching grass grow. Even the final game is totally anti-climatic. The 'big finish' is so obvious to the reader that its painful to have to read the final three chapters Anthony takes to actually have it happen.

I almost wish I'd have just quit at the first two. I'll stick with the Xanth series (although it long ago ran out of steam) and the Pale Horse series.

          4 out of 5 stars Appropriate ending.......2007-06-01

I was able to figure out the ending long before, but it was still enjoyable to finally finish this trilogy. I had originally bought it in the eighties when it was first published, but had never finished book 2. This time I was adamant about finishing the trilogy. (I didn't realize that there were another three books written even though I own one.) As I was getting close to finishing the second book, I couldn't find the third! Since I was pre-ordering the last Harry Potter book and needed something to get over $25 for free shipping, I figured I might as well re-order the third book. Needless to say, I found the original days after receiving the new copy and before finishing book two, so this book has never been opened. Still, even though the price was double what I originally paid for it, it was worth it. The original series was a very good read. I'm not a fan of Piers Anthony personal beliefs, but I think he's a talented writer. Thank you Piers for a very readable and fun series.

5 out of 5 stars great book for guys.......2006-09-14

Great conclusion to the series I like how his fantasy doesn't get as wordy as a Tolkein book. both excellent writers in their own sense but this book was just right for me.

          5 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile read.......2006-01-14

I picked up this book before the rest of the series for a reading report in High School. I instantly fell in love with the thought of corresponding frames and wished to read the rest of the series. Unfortunatly, for me the excitment went downhill from there. I will always consider this book the best of the series and recomend it to anyone who loves fantasy writings.

              Book Description

Description: Radical Juxtapositions is the first book to present both artistic facets of Yvonne Rainer, dance innovator and award-winning filmmaker. One of the most respected artists of the 20th century, Rainer broke new ground as part of the Judson Dance Theater in the early 1960s, where she created choreography that connected directly to life and utilized everyday movements--very much in sync with the contemporaneous aesthetics of Happenings, Pop Art and Minimalism. When dance failed to provide her with avenues through which to broach political subject matter, Rainer became a radical filmmaker. In this monograph, her work is examined from various vantage points by noted dance, film and art historians, with Rainer herself contributing an essay on how aging has affected her work and life. Including the score for her new work, After Many a Summer Dies the Swan: Hybrid, this volume is completed by an annotated biography and a full chronology and filmography.

                Book Description

Juxtapositions is an interdisciplinary text designed to help students develop critical reading, writing, thinking, and speaking skills. It fits into traditional composition programs as well as interdisciplinary programs, while heading a trend in composition studies away from personal, subjective writing oriented around current events and toward the kind of traditional academic writing considered a prerequisitite skill in upper-level courses.

The units in the text pair a variety of canonical readings in the humanities with an equally wide array of autobiographical essays and short stories. One disciplinary essay representing an important insight in the history of ideas — as well as a basic type of argument — is grouped with two shorter selections: a short story and a nonfiction essay, usually autobiographical. The lead essay demonstrates a theory, and the two following pieces give a social context for the theory.

The task of the student is to make an argument placing the theory in each unit within a social context by juxtaposing at least two texts from the unit. These pairings of texts help student writers learn to move between the abstract and the concrete — a necessary component of successful college writing. In this way, Juxtapositions works surprisingly well with both underprepared urban students and students in the Ivy League, which also now has writing programs.

                          Book Description

The churches and manuscripts of medieval Europe incessantly juxtapose imagery depicting sacred themes with likenesses of the crudest and basest nature. This book examines such contrasts in six major works of pre-1350 Spanish literature, arguing that medieval writers and artists subscribed to the classical belief that one must introduce the contrary of a concept in order to elucidate it fully. To explain this play of opposites, the author draws on the contrast between Bakhtin’s concept of the carnivalesque, which embodies and portrays the realm of desire, and the domain of the law, which imposes the social and behavioral restraints upon which civilized conduct is based.

Four of the works in question—the Poema de Mio Cid, the Razón de amor, the Libro de buen amor, and the Libro del Conde Lucanor—clearly display such contrary elements. The remaining works covered—the Auto de los reyes magos and the Milagros of Gonzalo de Berceo—would, on the surface, appear merely to affirm contemporary orthodoxy. The author argues, however, that even these works must be understood intertextually, that elements within them refer to a strongly contrastive other beyond their textual confines. When this theory is applied back to the other four texts, they, too, prove to bear within them allusions to an outside system of supplementary meanings.

How, then, can we account for this polar structure in medieval art and letters? The author argues that people of the time tended to understand artistic works in a manner analogous to the layout of a medieval manuscript page. The central part carries the most important message, yet in the periphery (the margin) one finds a commentary that is often essential to a complete understanding of the whole. Moreover, text and commentary oscillate: what is central can become peripheral, and what is “outside” can move to the core of a document’s explicitly thematized concerns.

This is an ok collection of comics for Warhammer 40k. If you don't play the game, or read many of the other books in this catagory, than it should be good for you. It has a great story line and it seems to flow well. If you are an avid enthusiest, than you'll be scratching your head, yelling corrections at the book, or reaching for your bolter to despense the Emporer's mercy to it. This is before you take into account the art's quality.

The story deals with a group of Blood Angels that have been exile for losing a holy relic during a battle. They are sent on their way with one of the chapter's light cruisers. But, it is unrealistic. I doubt that the chapter would give them a ship equipt with a transporter system. No less on that is capable of "site-to-site" transport. There are even more inconstencies that seem to leap off the pages at you.

But, if you can get through all of this, then you'll be able to enjoy the story for what it is.

                            Book Description

Each of Carlos Castaneda's books is a brilliant and tantalizing burst of illumination into the depths of our deepest mysteries, like a sudden flash of light, like a burst of lightning over the desert at night, which shows us a world that is both alien and totally familiar -- the landscape of our dreams.

Fire from Within is the author's most brilliant thought-provoking and unusual book, one in which Castaneda, under the tutelage of don Juan and his "disciples," at last constructs, from the teachings of don Juan and his own experiences, a stunning portrait of the "sorcerer's world" that is crystal-clear and dizzying in its implications.

I have been a fan of Carlos Castanda since his first novel, the teaching of Don Juan. This book is easily to grapse and interesting to learn about the life of a socery of Don Juan. Carlos experience so many vision in the fire from within. Being abstract, Carlos explain to the reader about his appreanticeship with Don Juan. From his hiliarous antic, Don Juan display his experience growing up as a seer. The book is highly recommended for any type of reader.

Like all his books. Difficult subject to discuss. People read it to either follow his path or follow for themselves. Either or great book.

Carlos Castaneda was one of the most controversial writers of the twentieth century. Some in academia branded him a fraud for claiming his stories were biographical rather than fiction, while lauding him as a great novelist for exposing a mass audience to otherwise inaccessible philosophical abstractions they claimed were largely plagiarized. Each of his works is a piece of a larger puzzle, which makes it impossible to critique any one book without addressing the larger context into which it fits.

His first two books, "Teachings of Don Juan" and "A Separate Reality" describe experiences induced by ingesting psychotropic hallucinogenics prepared by a Yaqui Indian shaman from Sonora, Mexico he called don Juan Matus, and accounted for his becoming a guru to a generation seeking short cuts to spiritual enlightenment, as well as his lifelong interest in the relationship between perception and reality, a theme now explored in many popular books on consciousness and quantum physics. Unfortunately, these books remain his best selling works, in spite of Castaneda refuting their importance in his later works. Readers would be best served to skip these and avoid the risk of being turned off to Castaneda and missing the more stimulating works that followed.

His third and fourth works were "Journey to Ixtlan" and "Tales of Power." In Ixtlan he admits to over-estimating the value of his drug experiences, which caused him to overlook the more profound teachings of don Juan which became the focus of future writings. What emerges is a spiritual discipline dating back to the Pre-Colombian Toltec sorcerers of Latin America, culminating with don Juan's departure from our world, effectively ending Castaneda's direct affiliation.

In his fifth and sixth works "Second Ring of Power" and "Eagles Gift" Castaneda suffers strange flashbacks of what seem to be memory fragments of events he is unable to fit into any logical time sequence. In his seventh and eighth works, "Fire From Within" and "Power of Silence," Castaneda succeeds in reconstructing his lost memories, which derive from teachings previously administered by don Juan while Castaneda was in a "heightened" state of awareness.

In books nine and ten, "Art of Dreaming" and "Active Side of Infinity," Castaneda focuses on what he describes as inorganic predators from another dimension, some having the power to imprison humanity in "ordinary reality" so they can feed on the dark emotional energies we produce when succumbing to the negative thoughts they insert into our minds.

In later years several seemingly substantiating works appeared by two of Castaneda's female apprentices, Taisha Abelar and Florinda Donner-Grau. In addition, two scathing exposés were also published by two of his ex-wives. The first, "Magical Journey with Carlos Castaneda" by first wife, Margaret Runyon, offers little corroboration, since her marriage pre-dates the time when the bulk of Castaneda's adventures were claimed to have occurred. While steadfast that Castaneda was a sorcerer, she doubts the existence of don Juan, even claiming authorship of many of the concepts Castaneda ascribed to him.

The second, and more credible work, is "Sorcerer's Apprentice," by well-known writer Amy Wallace, daughter of the late best selling novelist Irving Wallace. Here again, we find little corroboration since the time of the events she describes is well after the period when Castaneda's relationship with don Juan is alleged to occur. What the book does provide is a troubling look inside Castaneda's final years, a picture of descent into what seems sexual addiction and possibly madness, leaving one to wonder if Castaneda was just one cup of cool-aid short of a Jonestown.

Many have asked why I put any stock whatsoever in Castaneda. A story from my autobiography, "The Vortex" may shed some light. A year before Castaneda published his first book I had an experience that would remain a mystery until Castaneda published "Power of Silence" twenty years later.

For a brief time, in my youth, I became a practicing Muslim, meticulously performing the complex prayer ritual five times a day. Then one night, sitting in my car, frustrated and complaining at not being able to find the address of my next sales appointment, something inside me snapped. It was as if some part of me had disconnected from my body and assumed control, lecturing me about my lack of discipline. A profound calm settled over me, rendering me simultaneously detached and engaged. For two days my sales figures soared. It was as if no one could say no to me. On the evening of the second day I decided to put my new state of being to the acid test by visiting my parents. Their behavior was so uncharacteristically supportive I hardly recognized them. It was enough to convince me that I was now living in an altered reality. But by the following morning I had returned to "normal." So distracting had this event been that I completely forgot to perform my Muslim prayers, and in fact, never did so again.

Twenty years later, in a chapter of "Power of Silence" entitled "Place of No Pity" Castaneda describes a very similar experience. In the aftermath of the event don Juan explains that humans are like televisions stuck on a channel called "self-preoccupation," lacking the energy to tune into any of the vast array of other channels available to us. To change channels, he explains, we first need to accumulate energy, by practicing rituals that are deliberate, precise and repetitious. Do this long enough and eventually our stored energy precipitates a shift to a channel where self-importance and self pity become impossible. Once this happens we connect with the force that controls the entire universe, a force don Juan called "intent," and everything can be bent to our will and even more channels can be opened, assuming we remember to keep practicing the rituals that save our energy.

This one realization alone was enough to inspire me to dedicate my autobiography "To Carlos, with gratitude."

I am very happy to write a short review of this fabulous book which I hope will peak the interest of potential readers.

"The Fire From Within" has a timeless quality like other great works. Although much controversy surrounded Castenada as an Academic who became a student to don Juan Matus to learn the way of the Toltec seers, you cannot criticize Castenada's priceless images of the interactions between him and his benefactors.

As if the entertainment value is not enough, many of the "principles" within don Juan's teachings have high application in the corporate world and for personal success - believe it or not.

You can't discover this unless you read Castenada for yourself, but it should be clear that developing Unbending Intent; becoming Impeccable and gaining control over our Internal Dialogue and Sobriety can have powerful meaning to anyone hoping to focus their lives in a world where good leadership is hard to find and victims are too many.

I would leave my comments at this except for the debate about whether Castenda's tales are fiction or not. I don't think that it matters. Maybe it is just an extreme coincidence that Castenada's ideas can blossom into usefulness. Take the concept of Self Importance, for example. Anyone in America's corporate workplace has seen individuals self-destruct as a result of an over-inflated ego. How about Petty Tyrants? Isn't there always someone in the company who uses their position to torment weaker members of a group?

And what about the achievers who really pull it off? Can you see how their Unbending Intent, Impeccability and Sobriety, were big factors in their success? Of course!

Castenda gives hints and clues toward and ancient philosophy. Specifically he deal's with "Petty Tyrants" - those who use their position and abilities to enslave or torment others - and teaches the reader the art of facing them without flinching.

It is thought, that if one can do this successfully, repeatedly, he can face anything the universe can throw at him. This is the subtle art of becoming Impeccable.

I really enjoyed rading this book. For part of our final in history we had to read this book. Trask does an excellent job of discribing events from the past without boring everyone. Once I picked up this book, I couldn't put it down. I encourage anyone to read it.

5 out of 5 stars An engaging, original perspective on the Civil War . . ........1998-09-24

The author's use of journals and letters from the Civil War period, presented here in a readable, narrative format, paints a realistic view of the average people involved in one of the lowest points in this country's young history. Kerry Trask's stories and insights about the people portrayed in this book are every bit as entertaining as the primary texts themselves; in particular, the background information necessary in a book such as this is provided without overwhelming the reader with dry facts, figures, and dates. I found myself envisioning each season as it came and went, appreciating the contrasts depicted between life on the home front and that in the distant places where men and boys were waiting to confront an enemy no different from themselves. It is especially rewarding to know that Rosa Kellner's desire to become a published author has been fulfilled through the writing of this book. I would recommend it to any person with an interest in the human aspect of war, especially teachers who are looking for a book that students will enjoy reading.

5 out of 5 stars Civil War History At Its Best.......1998-08-06

I really enjoyed reading this book. It seems the author really has a grasp of the history of Manitowoc during the Civil War. It was interesting to read how the soldiers felt during their Civil War enlistment, and how the people back home felt about their loved ones going to war in the South. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Civil War history.
