Book Description
Great-uncle Frederick has passed away, and the Kelling clan of Boston has made plans to put the old gentleman's remains in the family vault on Beacon Hill. When the vault is opened, however, there's someone already there that no one could have ever expected -- the skeleton of a burlesque queen who disappeared thirty years ago!
With the help of private detective Max Bittersohn, it's up to Sarah Kelling to hold the shocked family together, and try to find out what happened. What they unravel is a complex murder plot that not only stretches into the past, but also has Sarah marked as a victim!
Customer Reviews:
Eccentricities and suspense.......2004-10-04
This is a well-weaved, humorous mystery about the bad things that occur to the quirky Kelling clan, their friends and associates. I was crestfallen about the turn of events half-way through the book, but can't say why for fear of revealing too much of the story. Nonetheless, it was very fun to read, with many suspenseful moments. I especially enjoyed all the eccentricities of the characters in the book, in addition to the Boston setting.
A Great Read!.......2003-01-15
As a avid mystery reader I found this book to be very exciting. I couldn't put the book down! It was never really dull or boring and had a very ingenius plot. Out of all the Charolette MacLeod books I have read, I found this one to be the best. It starts off when the Kellings go to bury an uncle only to discover that someone had already been buried in the family vault. It was fun to read and was very thrilling at times.
The Family Vault.......2000-01-10
The Family Vault is the first in MacLeod's Sarah Kelling/Max Bittersohn mystery series, in which we are introduced to Sarah and her convoluted family. The book begins as the heroine prepares the family vault mentioned in the title prior to her uncle's funeral only to find it already occupied by the skeleton of a showgirl, Ruby Redd. All is made (mostly) clear by the end of the book, leaving plenty of hooks for subsequent mysteries. "The Family Vault" is a bit stiff compared to her later books, but a fun fast read nevertheless.
Fun, very different, wonderful language.......1999-08-17
This is a very offbeat Peter Shandy adventure, but not at the usual college. A trip back in time in Wales that was most enjoyable. Worth making an effort to find if you enjoy the Shandy series, humor, or interesting use of language.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful Tool.......2003-11-11
I personally believe that this book does a good job on breaking all of the information down. It is more of an overview of the family, which I think is helpful for an introductory course. I think it is a good book!
Don't bother reading this book.......1999-12-12
I read this book for a Sociology class and was not impressed. The book contained many factual errors. More importantly, the book is offensive to any moral person. The author took every opportunity to beat up on religious people and their beliefs.
I don't think that it's unreasonable to assume that the author is a devout socialist. Furthurmore, the author did a good job of accusing white Christian males of causing all of the world's problems. I would highly recommend that you don't read this book.
Limited textbook on marrige and the family.......1999-02-19
This is the standard textbook for studying marriage and the family, unfortunately. It is quite a good introduction with interdiscplinary perspectives from thee authors, but their underlying definition of "family" is inherently flawed. The traditinal "family" definition is not covered, nor are alternatives to contraception and abortion like chastisty and nurturing women who want to keep their baby.
Someone needs to write a similiar textbook without this underlying bias. I hope there is a publisher out there that will agree.

Fraught with Intrigue and Testosterone Run Wild.......2006-04-23
In Primordial Vault, (an excerpt of which we featured last month, Malek's Santuary) author Frank Deft brings us Lt. Colonel Carl Malek, the Air Force's Top Ace pilot and a Medal of Honor recipient. He is Commander of a fighter squadron at Bettingen Air Base in West Germany. Set in the Cold War, the story centers around his relationship with the pilots of his squadron, who he controls and manipulates. Newly installed in Germany and absent their loved ones, the men allow their egos and libidos to rule with cataclysmic results.
At age 35, Carl's insecurities and suicidal family history have collided sending his world into a dangerous downhill spiral. His tendency toward abuse of women, from groping of barmaids to battery and threats, catapults him into a life and death situation, which he tries desperately to control. To make things worse, the fighter group's CO, Col. Brengard, recruits Captains Paul Oxner and Brice Trupp to keep an eye on Malek, whose sociopathic tendencies have cast a shadow of suspicion over him in the disappearance of a young German girl. Carl's paranoia and the constant scrutiny of the Provost Marshall, Captain Aaron Kroll, keep him on edge and his determination to maintain his position send him lashing out to destroy those who threaten his very existence.
Fraught with intrigue and testosterone run wild, this book will appeal to lovers of war stories and the mind games of competitive men fighting for superiority. Deft's long military background and fighter pilot experience enable him to bring extraordinary technical detail and realism to the practiced war games and dogfights that erupt between Malek and his men. The romances between some of the aviators and their German frauleins soften and fill out the otherwise male-oriented plot. Primordial Vault achieved award status in the 2001 William Faulkner Creative Writing Competition and the New Century Writer Awards contest in 2002.

Eh, its ok.......2007-06-02
While I actually own all 5 volumes, I can say that this one is ok.
The artwork is beautiful and I wouldn't except anything less from Viz's shojo line. However, the artwork is classic for any shojo work with the same pretty lines and similar faces. In fact if you've read any of Takada's other works the character look all alike. Just compare the covers of Happy with Punch.
The plot is incredibily formulatic. By the first volume you can guess where this one is going. Granted there are a few plot twists but they remain resolved before the individual volume is completed.
What makes me so sad about this work is that the heroine starts out so strong. More so than anyother shojo heroine I've seen, but by the end of the 5th volume she is just another boy-crazed girl. I also think the author played up the sex end of this story way too much. That is pretty much the focus of the work! The only hinder to actual sex is the that fact that the main character's love interest is phobic towards girls. Like that's never been tried before.
Also supporting characters are sadly underdeveloped. The class president was the most consistently interesting and the most widely ignored.
Overall, for a high school romantic comedy I've read better works.
Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow. . ........2006-12-15
Note: I will clue you in to something that I found out the hard way: H3 is only 5 volumes. THAT'S IT, End of the line; Do not pass GO, do not collect $200. Also, Children beware, this is not for kids. Well, it's not too bad, but some jokes will go right over the head of someone under 15.
On to my review:
This is one of my favorite series. The characters have interesting personalities that keep you guessing because everyone has a back story, they are as developed as 5 volumes will let them be, which is adequate. I was rooting for Hanabi the whole time, because she was so funny. In fact the whole series is a great comedy, people have said it before, this is not the most believable series, but it is the most fun I've had in ages. It's a great read while I am desperately waiting for the new Boys over Flowers volume to come out. The artwork is adorable and full of emotion, complete with great backgrounds of the ocean. I've stopped giving out spoilers in my reviews, so all I will say is that this is, to me, the epitome of the shoujo genre, it's got romance, teenage angst, school problems, parental problems, love triangles and bishonen (beautiful men). I have so many questions because the end kind of leaves you hanging, but all in all lovely.
I would recommend this series for anyone who is just getting into Shoujo. Everyone recommends classics like Mars, Sailor Moon and Fruits Basket etc but while those are all great series, they are admittedly long-winded (With the exception of Mars which ends in 15 volumes).
The Verdict:
If you have been searching for a cute love story with a happy ending this 5 volume series is shoujo at it's finest. Highly Recommended. A-
Solid Read.......2006-11-19
Happy Hustle High was a hilarious (at times not really believable, but hey, it's a book) teen story. The cliffhanger storyline keeps you wanting the read the next book and see what happens next. The main characters are pretty solid though there are a view I really wish they would have told you more about towards the end. It's an enjoyable read, the boys are ridiculously pretty and the heroine is a lovable tomboy. Just another teen story, yes, but a pretty good one.
Volume 1 is a great start.......2006-10-24
Unlike some reviews on this page the following one is for the first volume:
In Happy Hustle High (originally published as H3 School), Hanabi Ozora is a 16 yr old tomboy whose all-girl school is being intergrated with Meibi High (an all boy school). Hyper and cute, Hanabi is excited to have the boys around and on the first day meets the cute student council vice president, Yasuaki Garaku, who seems to want nothing to do with her or any girl. To help her shy and lovestruck friends, Hanabi agrees to fill in as a student council rep. Her first task? Make dating 'legal' again within the school. This means she'll have to get approval from Yasuaki.
I don't want to give too much away and ruin the fun of reading this manga (since that all it really is: fun), but you'll see Hanabi finding herself being in 'like' with both Yasuaki as well as his 'rival' Tokihisa Aido.
Personally, I really like this manga so far. Rie Takada has a nice clean style with good looking guys and cute girls. The story is nothing we haven't seen before, but I thought everything just really seemed to work. Yes Hanabi is lucky finding herself in the midst of a budding love triangle with the school's best looking guys, but she's such a likeable character it didn't annoy me, I was instead cheering her on.
If your looking for a cute, funny, and pretty short (I think it's only 5 vol.) series that is perfect for the manga reader who is looking for something a bit more mature, then I highly recommend Happy Hustle High.
It's a good series for older teens.......2006-03-06
Kids who are say, "ew, the ending of the second one grossed me out!" should not be reading this series. It is intended for a more mature audience, and besides, the ending was pretty funny. Younger kids might not be able to see deeper into the books either, and wouldn't be able to get anything out of it. Make sure you check the age suggestion and decide if you're mature enough to read this.

Customer Reviews:
Our Last Stand?.......2006-08-29
Assault On Atlantis is the fifth book in the series and it is just as good as the first four. Millions are dead and still could die as radioactive gas moves across Russia, towards Europe, while a huge hole in the ozone layer is getting bigger and bigger. Dane has to find a way to repair the atmosphere and he has to do it with Shadow technology. Otherwise his Earth, a long with others, will fall to the Shadows.
Can our Earth survive with help from the past? Or will we get help from another Earth which is already doomed but wishes to lash back at the enemy? Amelia Earhart, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Robert Frost and George Armstrong Custer will all have their parts to play in this struggle.
Not too bad...but not the best.......2004-05-30
Well...after reading all the previous novels and anxiously awaiting the release of this book, i was really enthused until i sat down and read it. Or at least tried to...it actually took me a couple of months to finally finish it. Let me just say that the plot was pretty annoying when it came to trying to remember all the character names. Plus, the plot of the Battle for Little Big Horn was way to long and hard to get through because it was too descriptive and didnt get to the point fast enough. Although i do have to admit that the book took long for me to read because of how busy i have been.
Anyways, i was disappointed on the book overall...it seemed pretty weird, as if Greg lost his enthusiam for writing the novel. It didnt have nearly as much jaw dropping events like the ones in the previous novels. The first fourth and last fourth of the book were the most interesting and thrilling. Because of that i am going to read the next novel "Battle for Atlantis" so i can finally know the fate and ending of the saga. I am a devoted fan and will continue to read other books of Greg's but HOPEFULLY the next novel will be better than this one.
I've Been Hooked ..........2003-12-27
... but I was hoping for more plot advancement in this latest of the "Atlantis" series of novels. The overall impression this novel left me with is best described with a simple phrase: It's a warm-up to a finale of sorts.
At the beginning and the end of the novel, you have the plot advancment, but in the thick middle it focuses mostly on the Battle of the Little Bighorn (aka Custer's Last Stand). So the 296-page novel had maybe 50 pages of actual plot advancement, with the rest serving as a look into the minds and actions of key players in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The 50 pages of advancement are quite interesting, however (that's why I was hoping for more).
It appears the reader will have to wait for Mr. Donegan's (yes, a pen name, but the author's real name escapes me for the moment ) next novel in the series ("Battle for Atlantis"), which comes out in February 2004. It appears to promise significant advancement in the storyline, and perhaps a final resolution.
In conclusion, I am hooked on the "Atlantis" series, but now I want answers. "Assault on Atlantis" earns a conditional recommendation from me - if you're an "Atlantis" series reader, pick it up, but do so knowing that, IMO, plot advancement is limited and that the novel appears to be a big build-up to a finale of sorts in the next novel.
a bit weaker than the other novels.......2003-12-20
We have all been waiting for this novel to be launched. And it proves to be a novel that again shows Bob Meyer's tremendous writing skills, his expertise in creating suspense, and his careful historic research. All this combined results in another great book in the series. The best is the Custer-plot. It is really convincing and exciting. But I think the Earhart/Dane plot is just a little bit slow this time and cannot catch up with the story of Custer's defeat. But go ahead and read this book. It is very good. But make sure you have read the other novels of the series first.
enjoyed the storyline!!.......2003-11-08
To people who have been reading the Atlantis books, you will love them, but if you have not read any of them before read them before reading this one. It is well forth reading them in order, Can't wait for the last one to come out!!

Simply Down To Earth.......2000-04-07
Rabbi Katsof does a masterful job of keeping it simple and easy to understand. He writes like a wise father telling his children a story. I was captivated. I am not a religious person, yet I found myself with new questions and thoughts. I actually found myself praying at times while reading his book. To me that's like taking a giant step. I enjoyed it so much that I will read it again. Best of all I think his formula works for all religions. I heartily recommend this book for all ages & religions.
"Awesome".......2000-03-23
I could not put the book down once I started it. I am not a religious person, yet the message appealed to my spiritual side. What impressed me most about the book was that it has appeal for anyone.
For All Peoples, everywhere.......2000-03-16
This book is a must read for people of all faiths and backgrounds. I have found amongst the members of our community that people are looking for a way of getting closer to their Father in heaven. This books provides the tools.
How To Get Your Prayers Answered.......2000-03-09
What I love best about this book is its simplicity. Five simple steps. Yet they are so profound. At the end one feels incredibly inspired that God was really listening, and that it would be a real loss not to talk to Him every day. He listens and answers if one just knows how to tune in. This books shows how. It is a prayer answered in itself.
Soulful and Spiritual.......2000-03-07
The most remarkable aspect to this book is the sincerity that is apparent throughout, without becoming simplistic or highminded. Katsof satiates a deep yearning for spirituality in the soul of the public without resorting to "new age" psychobabble. Anyone who wants the first step to understanding the deeper meaning to meaningful conversations with G-d need look no further than this tome. It truly is a valuable guideline for the "lost" as well as the "found." I enthusiastically recommend it to all, young and old alike.
