Classic Lindsey.......2006-10-09
Really a great read, from an writer that is consistantly first rate. The Mexico City setting for part of the book is fantastic, you can feel the city close in. Lindsey really gets Mexico City and through his writing skills and gift for great imagery, the city comes alive. The story is fast paced and riviting, I hate it when people tell the whole story in their review, so ill just say, if you like taunt well written thrillers set in exotic locals, then you will love this book. Buy it!..Highly Recommended....frankly read all of his books, they are all, great reads.

Book Description
The faceless are Paul Bern's business. As a forensic artist in Austin, Texas, Paul painstakingly reconstructs the likenesses of unfortunate souls whose features have been obliterated by crime or accident. As macabre as his vocation may be, it has become a comfortable and lucrative routine - until the day a mysterious woman arrives at his studio. The visitor brings two gifts. The first is a human skull she has smuggled out of Mexico. The second is a staggering secret that brings him eyeball to eyeball with a past he never knew he had.
Suddenly, Paul's own government blackmails him into cooperating in a clandestine mission against a Middle Eastern terrorist group that has made the drug jungles of South America its staging ground. By using his own face as bait to lure the enemy, he will become all too intimate with the underworld of violence that he seeks to destroy, while thousands of lives hang in the balance of his intricate and dangerous deception.

An Amazing Amazon, Once Again!.......2007-09-17
After the passing of Wonder Woman's creator William Moulton Marston in 1947, only two people have ever done this character any justice: the first was actress\singer Lynda Carter Wonder Woman - The Complete First Season, who portrayed our heroine in the late-1970s, and the other was veteran comic book artist\writer George perez!Modern Masters Volume 2: George Perez This was Perez' first attempt at writing a series and as far as I am concerned, as of this date, it remains his best. What Perez understood, despite any minor flubs in dialogue or plot, was that Marston created this character for girls; not to stimulate adolescent-male fantasies (although as a kid, I doubt I would have had any problems with Ms.Carter tying me up in that golden lasso, grr-rowl!) In the 40s, it was nearly social heresy for the Amazing Amazon to encourage young heroines (and female fans) to get strong so they wouldn't have to depend on a man; a message, I think, in which many would find even greater resonance today, especially in our inner cities. During the Golden Age, only 20+ years after women first received the right to vote, it was practically un-American!
Unlike so many others who have treated Wonder Woman as merely a female Superman at best, or worse, as star-spangled cheesecake, George Perez understood the full ramifications of the character's origins--and her potential. Although Perez' version was sometimes preachy and decidedly Pro-Woman, it never failed to entertain! I think Mr. Marston definitely would have approved! Another thing, the Perez stories were rich in Greek mythology and combined with George's Art Nouveau influenced drawing-style,seemed to project a definite "New Age" atmosphere that attracted people who would eventually become fans of Neil Gaiman's Sandman. The Absolute Sandman, Vol. 1
This particalar volume re-introduces arch-villainess the Cheetah, revamped and super-powered for the modern age, then segues into a plot that leads our Amazing Amazon into an indirect conflict with Lord Zeus! It seems that like his mythological counterpart, Zeus has taken a liking to our Ultra-human princess and wants to take her as his bride--or a lover,at least, and he didn't bother to disguise himself as a swan on this occasion! Of course, Diana resists Zeus' advances! This rejection of the Kingly Deity, provokes the angry god to send her on one of his little quests to prove her "worthiness"! Wonder Woman does so and in the end, she learns not only the secret of Themys--Themis-- oh, PARADISE ISLAND(!) but in addition, the meaning of why her uniform looks so much like an American flag...
So, take off your tiara and your red-leather boots; set that magic lasso down for a spell; turn on some Richie Wagner (or Tori Amos, if that's your cup of java) and get your read-on as our Princess of Power "...stops the bullets cold and makes the bad-guys fold!" while lookin' as fine as only she can look, especially when lovingly rendered by George Perez!
Sorry, Wondy, but you were always TOO MUCH! Grr-owl!
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Wonder Woman in warlike mode, having to deal with her rival Amazons, defending her position, and her arch enemy.
The gods decided to test her to see if she is worth of her abilities.
The psychopathic Cheetah adds yet another hurdle to overcome, if she didn't already have enough to do.
4 volumes so far, and hopefully more to come.......2007-04-25
After Crisis on Infinite Earths, both Superman's and Batman's origins were retooled for a whole new DC Universe. These were exciting stories that quickly became modern classics. But what about the final member of the so-called trinity? Many may be hard-pressed to recall that Wonder Woman got her turn at the hands of George Perez, and it was quite different from what was done with Supes and Bats. I passed on these comics at the time, but as they are now being reprinted in a trade paperback series under the general banner of WONDER WOMAN: GEORGE PEREZ, I figured it was time to give them a try. So far, 4 volumes have collected WW #1 - 24, WW Annual #1, and Action Comics #600. With assistance from Len Wein and Greg Potter, Perez took a stab at both story and art duties for the reintroduction of the Amazon princess. After reading all 4 volumes over a couple of weeks, I can say that this was an excellent effort from Perez, but it did have some problems that are ultimately forgivable when considering this was his first try at an extended double-duty on a title.
The good:
This is by far the most in-depth analysis of Wonder Woman ever attempted. Not only do you get a very complex and detailed origin for Diana, but an extensive history of the Amazons in general. It's certainly much more thorough than what any other DC character received post-Crisis. Perez ties so much of Wonder Woman's life and adventures to Greek mythology, to the point that I had to research many of their classical sources. Many Golden/Silver Age characters, such as Steve Trevor and Etta Candy, and classic villains the Cheetah and Silver Swan, are integrated even more strongly to the Amazon princess' adventures. Also, it's very interesting how Perez subtly weaves an undercurrent of lesbianism into Amazon society. It's not cheap or gratuitous; just a logical extension of life on an island populated solely by women.
The bad:
It's very apparent that Perez was just getting the hang of writing at this point in his career - the stories have their clumsy moments, with important plot points dropping out of nowhere. Also, I have never seen so many supporting characters! Isn't this book supposed to be about Wonder Woman? Some were certainly essential to Diana's story; others, not so much. In addition, the history of the Amazons is very convoluted. I was constantly referring back to volume 1 to figure out why the Greek gods created them in the first place and exactly what the ladies had been doing for thousands of years besides enriching themselves and ignoring the outside world. Finally, you'd think that Wonder Woman's interactions with the larger DC Universe are almost nil, based on what is shown in this series. During this period, company-wide crossovers such as Legends and Millenium were having big effects on the DCU; however, the stories behind them are mostly glossed over in the series, with little exposition, or even an editorial note.
So while these stories did have their problems, it's an excellent contribution from George Perez to the modern DC Universe, and the elements he created are still part of Wonder Woman storylines today. I'm ready for more volumes!
Wonder Woman Rides Again!.......2006-08-17
The thrilling modern age retelling of the world's first and arguably still greatest superheroine, Wonder Woman, born Princess Diana to Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons on Paradise Island, chosen to go to "Man's World" to stop the mad war god Ares from destroying the world.
Dated though it may be, George Perez's writing in collaboration with Len Wein, Greg Potter and Bruce Patterson helped redefine Wonder Woman for a new era, and it remains some of the best stuff to ever come from Wonder Woman's adventures.
I wish I could do it more justice than that. A must read for all fan boys and fan girls.
The most beautiful book I have ever seen!!!!.......2006-07-04

Book Description
Brian Stableford launched an ambitious future history series with Inherit the Earth, to widespread praise. "Stableford has created in this novel a totally believable world, and wrapped it around a series of mysterious events, surprise revelations, double crosses, confused motivations, rumors, lies, plots, and counterplots. . . . Tightly controlled and suspenseful throughout," said Science Fiction Chronicle. Library Journal said, "The ethical questions posed by the prospect of conquering the aging process underscore this fast-paced SF adventure, adding depth to a story that will appeal to fans of high-tech SF and conspiracy theories." This future world is a complex society obsessed with the technology of life extension and on the brink of creating true immortals. Now, in Architects of Emortality, Stableford gives us a story set hundreds of years in the future, filled with people who can hope for 300-year lifespans and a fortunate few whose lives will be in the thousands of years. This society is on the edge of radical change, where people have the time to develop eccentric lifestyles and personal obsessions, a world sometimes reminiscent of the distant future of Michael Moorcock's Dancers at the End of Time series. And there has been a series of murders that threaten the future stability of the world, murders executed by bioengineered flowers. Police officers Watson and Holmes investigate, but the central figure quickly becomes the amateur detective Oscar Wilde, a student of history who has taken on the persona of his namesake. And the question is not so much who the murderer is, but how and why.Filled with memorable characters and powerful and striking images of the richly altered world of the future, Architects of Emortality is a satisfying and complete story that also adds depth and detail to the evolving series.

Philosophical Exploration of Death and Life.......2003-10-06
I had wanted to give a 4.5 but rounded up. The biggest question one would ask "Is this a mystery with science fiction or science fiction with mystery?" Regardless, it is a success - an erudite, artistic, novel of the future, simultaneously deep, exploratory and questioning.
What I liked best was the seemingly logical continuation of present trends so unlike many futuristic visions: The increasing reliance on biotechnology - indeed the ultimate supremacy of biotech as opposed to silicone tech is a major theme throughout. The disappearance of religion and the resultant worship of youth and immortality, the loss of the family unit, the triumph of the market economy, the inexorable advance of science, the wars of terror and plagues, the vast eco projects. All of these are simply extensions of current trends.
The inclusion of Oscar Wilde and the literary puzzles from the 19th century was a stroke of genius. In fact, that character seemed to stand out about all others - even the detective heroine who understood that she was condemned to die after only 200 years of life.
And thus the question...when immortality is the norm, how does one view death? What does death mean when it becomes more rare by the day?
The mystery itself was intriguing if a tad week at the end but the methodology of the killer was startingly original. The race and the snappy dialogue (along with the philosophical musings of the author and the characters) more than made up for this small deficiency. In this - the second of the series - the author proves himself a visionary of the first order.
For a similar work, see A PHILOSOPHICAL MURDER, another futuristic detective story with literary and philosophical components.
Fascinating, well thought out world. Pedestrian mystery........2003-09-03
The amazing "world" that Stabelford lays out in this book is almost like another character, and in many ways is the most interesting character in the book. The actual characters here are, for the most part, little more than brief outlines and seem to be there only to talk about and describe the changes to the earth 300 years on. Only "Oscar Wilde" has any depth, and then only to serve as a link back to 20th century earth's culture and literature.
The mystery here is a mcguffin, serving little more than as a stage on which the marvels of bio-engineering and nanotechnology can unfold.
But, let's not damn this book with faint praise. The description of the earth and what happened from 2000-2400 is very well done and worth the read alone. Like any good (not great, but good) science fiction novel the main joy of reading is finding out how things have changed, how the author thinks problems will be solved and what new problems will come up because of the changes.
PERFECT MURDERS.......2003-04-04
Let this author transport you 300 years forward when all births will be ectogenetic-outside the womb. ARCHITECTS OF EMORTALITY rises above being a mere who-done-it murder mystery and soars into realms of philosophy -longevity or emortality. Consider: does man's current mediocrity stem from his short life span? What would people do with lives lasting 200 plus years? Will brain augmentation occur by plugging neurons into external computer memory? Is the brain but a machine to generate virtual milieus for man's body to function in? Will the perfection of virtual reality devalue man's experiences by showing that consciousness is reducible to a mere string of zeros and ones? Will the end of death in man eliminate the need for children? Is man but a wall decoration in history's hallway? So many questions about the now short and then longer lifespans of man are raised that this tome comes close to being great literature.
Finding the perpetrator of five mysterious murders of prominent scientists dominates the plot of the story. Stableford teaches the reader how to commit the perfect murder-make sure your alibi includes being already dead yourself by utilizing a totally exotic murder weapon wielded by a killer robot who cannot be charged with the murder. On the down side the Oscar Wilde character was a pompous [butt] who at times insisted on proving how erudite he was but only slowed the story to a dead halt. All in all, however, a great book to curl up with on a rainy day.
Thoughtful extrapolation, okay mystery plot.......2000-08-25
_Architects of Emortality_ is set in a "future history" that Brian Stableford has been working on for some time. The basic outline of this future history is that in the next century, environmental disasters destroy the ecosystem, and nearly destroy human life. Women become sterile until the development of an artificial womb. The ecosystem is recreated by genetic engineering, in a simpler and more efficient form. Surviving humans have their lifespan radically extended by nanotech, to about 200 years.
This novel, an expansion of the fine novella "Les Fleurs du Mal", is set just after a new advance in genetic engineering: genetic engineering, instead of nanotech, has made young people who may live much longer still: they are essentially "emortal". However, those who have not been engineered in the womb cannot be treated. They will die at about 200. As the novel proper opens, one of the last people not to get the new treatment, Charlotte Holmes, is investigating a rare murder, which occurred in a sort of prologue.
A very old man, a specialist in using nanotech to destroy old buildings, has been infected with a tailored virus, which only works against him, and which turns his remains into a ghoulish plant. Holmes and her superior, Hal Watson (Holmes and Watson: get it? A bit too cute, I thought;) work for the UN: they are soon joined by a young member of the new emortals, who works for the MegaMall, the (not so) secret masters of the world, and by Oscar Wilde, a master genetic engineer. It soon turns out that the prime suspect is another genetic engineer, Rappaccini, and his "daughter" (get it?), a young woman who has infected the victim by having sex with him.
The detectives are led on a wild chase by Rappaccini, as several contemporaries of the first victim, all also experts in one field or another, are murdered as well. The mystery is really "What's the motive?", and the motive is tied, of course, to the nature of Stableford's future. It's pretty well done, with lots of neat extrapolative science. The characters are somewhat flat, especially the nominal viewpoint character, Charlotte Holmes. The eventual solution is a bit strained. It's an enjoyable book, and Stableford's future is interesting and original, but it's only mildly successful as a novel. Worth your time, but no classic to be.
Thought-provoking and intelligent sci-fi.......2000-07-04
Brian Stableford is an excellent writer who has expertly captured a possible future of humankind. "Architects of Emortality" does seem possible, because of all the genetic advances occuring today. As well, the intrusion of technology in every facet of a person's life is well thought out in this second novel of a series. I have not read the predecessor, "Inherit the Earth", but the second novel is fine to be read on its own. And, as I'm sure it's any human's dream, rejuvenation and emortality make us think of how different humanity could become. I recommend this cerebral novel. Well done, Brain Stableford!

Worth Every Penny . . . And More!.......2005-03-06
Years ago I was told I should have in my audio library the series of talks given by Joel Goldsmith in Hawaii in the 1950's. But I already had a number of his tapes, so I put off buying more.
Then this book was introduced which consists of later classes in Hawaii. What a treat to read the difference in how Joel's consciousness had been transformed from books of earlier times! The words somehow, at least to me, became deeper, more profound.
This book is volume packed and flows as though you are right there with him, hearing him, seeing him, feeling the presence of God within him when he goes into meditation with his students. Example: Page 211, "Close your eyes, and very gently inside of yourself say: 'I. That is all. I is within you, so learn to trust it, but not as a power over anything. Just trust 'I am with you' and rest, relax."
As always, Joel's delivery is not trite or superficial or pompous. Down to earth, friendly, and spoken in language every one can understand.
Joel S Goldsmith was a mystic teacher whose writings I devoured for many years. This 600+ page hardback is no exception.
Gail Gupton, Author: The 31-Day Diet of Spiritual Enlightenment and Seekers of Truth
Mesmerizing, profound, a page turner!.......2005-01-17
I've been working with Goldsmith material for a few years,
more deeply these last 12 months or so. I certainly haven't
read everything. I find Goldsmith thought provoking, soul
stretching, an intimate friend on my spiritual path. This
book is by far the best I've studied.
I read a chapter each morning and meditate with it. I take
notes. I simply love it.
I've been studying spirit and metaphysics for 25 years and
thought I had a pretty good handle on things. But have been
challenged and provoked again and again in this amazing book.
If you're reading this review, you're ready for this book.
I have written the word WOW numerous times in the margins.
It blows my mind. Thanks again, Joel Goldsmith!
Amazing Gift.......2004-01-18
Each serious student should treat themselves to this book. What an excellent job Acropolis Books has done in publishing these beautiful and illuminating lectures which were unavailable for decades. Mr. Goldsmith's depth of consciousness lifts us with each page.
A profound addition for any serious student's library........1998-06-12
This collection of Joel's final talks in Hawaii is beautifully presented. Joel's talks have been published in their original, unedited form, and students of The Infinite Way® will respond to the consciousness immediately. Shortly after delivering this part of the message, Joel began his last trip to Europe. These talks were never recorded. Until recently, they were only available from student to student. It is important reading for any serious student of this message.
A new addition to the library of mysticism.......1998-05-13
An expansion upon the previously published material of Infinite Way. Full of insight and practical pointers on the Way.
