    Book Description

The garden of beloved children's stories is full of small characters: the Little Mermaid, Tom Thumb, Little Red Riding Hood, the Little Engine That Could. That's not only because children themselves are small. Audiences old and young, for generation upon generation, have cheered the triumph of the little over the big. Here, then, is a collection of tales that delights in everything small. Set with antique illustrations by such renowned artists as Honor C. Appleton, Arthur Rackham, Margaret Tarrant, and Walter Crane, these classic stories will enchant and entertain.

      Book Description

"Each of Moss's surprising, beautifully constructed, and soulful stories brilliantly illuminates the paradox of paradise."—Booklist

These eight magical stories address the Edenic spaces that people create in their lives and the serpents that subtly inhabit them. In "Rug Weaver" (selected for Best American Short Stories 2001) an Iranian rug dealer makes a paradise of his prison cell by weaving an elaborate rug in his mind. Grieving parents in the title story transfigure a luxury subdivision in southern California into a vision of heaven. And in the novella "The Palm Tree of Dilys Cathcart" an unlikely love story unfolds between an Orthodox Jewish butcher and a lonely English piano teacher, who discovers a hunger for intimacy and ritual as she helps the butcher transcribe the mysterious songs he hears in his head. These and other stories constitute an elegant and richly evocative collection about the complexities of worldly and spiritual desires. Reading group guide included.

      5 out of 5 stars A Glorious Collection.......2004-03-22

This is an exquisite collection of stories. Barbara Klein Moss is a master storyteller whose prose is glorious - poetic, intelligent, wry and rich in metaphor.
The characters are inventive, the observations are astute, and every story is complex, sophisticated and skillfully crafted. The novella alone is worth the price of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Darkover book.......2007-08-30

Like many a fan of MZB's Darkover series I was delighted to see that she had collaborated with Deborah Ross on the Clingfire trilogy. I feared that we would no longer have access to Darkover when the trilogy was finished. I found The Alton Gift to be a worthy part of the Darkover series. MZB would be pleased, I think, to read of the indepth characterizations (Lew, Marguerida, Mikhail, etc.), the lush imagery of life on the planet, the deft handling of the increasingly complex politics (which has always been a hallmark of MZB novels) and the fascinating fantasies extended around the Comyn and their use of "laran."

I could not put the book down.

I particularly loved the trouble that Deborah Ross went to in re-imagining the history and subtly reminding the reader of what had happened in novels written many, many years ago. For those of us who have been reading Darkover novels for thirty years, it was a kindness.

I'd strongly recommend this book to anyone who is familiar with the Darkover novels. It will be like coming home to old friends and meeting some new ones in the process.

                  4 out of 5 stars Satisfying Continuation.......2007-08-25

My concern that this would not be as engaging as a 'real' Zimmer Bradley Darkover novel were quickly allayed. The characters have an authentic voice and the new problems facing Darkover after the Terranan have left are well delineated. As a reader I wanted more development of the 'earth sense' but suspect that this is in a novel still to come.

1 out of 5 stars Darkover ended with Traitor Sun.......2007-07-20

Let me say first that I love the Darkover series, ever since I first read Two to Conquer. I loved Marion Zimmer Bradley's flair for being able to develop rich, complex characters that followed their own consistent psychology. More than any other science fiction series, a reader could say, "That's just like Lew Alton!" and have the conviction that the next few pages would richly develop and support the prior characterization. The book begins with a quick word from Marion Zimmer Bradley expressing her love for Lew, but the love that she put into him is the same love that she put into every aspect of the world of the bloody sun. Through her myriad of books, she consistently built upon every theme, place, and character, creating a consistent world.

This consistency is completely shattered by The Alton Gift. Like many readers, I eagerly awaited the release of this book because I wanted to see more Lew, more Mikhail, more Marguerida. The story didn't feel quite compelted, and I wanted to see what happened next. This book entirely let me down.

There are pages and pages of action, but the feel is entirely wrong. Lew Alton survived and overcame the obliteration of his hand, the death of his wife, his torture by a former friend, and the constant haunting of the Sharra Matrix, yet his response to the essential use of the Alton Gift at the end of Traitor Sun is entirely out of character. It seemed as if the author wanted to discuss the use of the Alton Gift, and latched onto the first character she could. Such a discussion has other characters that would eagerly take up the cause, yet they are overlooked in preference for Lew.

The treatment of Javanne, if even ever so briefly, is indicative of the problem with this book: a failure of consistency. Characters that were on their way to being Keepers no longer even reside in towers. Neversin now has its own tower: when did this happen? It was certainly not mentioned in the text. Characters' natures, the facts of the world, and behaviors of whole groups of people are handled so poorly that it makes me question how closely the author read the prior books.

All in all, I was very disappointed with this text. Without serious correction to the course that the series has now taken, then I'm afriad that I will consider Traitor Sun to be the final book in the series. Marion Zimmer Bradley was a master of world-building and characterization. The new author's characterization is not bad, it just refutes all that has come before, and this is a true tragedy.

4 out of 5 stars Keep 'em coming.......2007-07-12

If you're the Darkover nut I've turned into, you'll be more than satisfied with this latest installment. :)

4 out of 5 stars Good Addition to Darkover Series.......2007-06-22

Ross returns to Bradley's Darkover world in the sequel to Traitor's Sun. This book follows mostly Domenic, the oldest son of Marguerida and Mikhael, as he tries to figure out how to be a man and outside the shadow of his parents. If you aren't familiar with Darkover, this is probably a pretty bad place to start, since it could really be considered probably the 6th book in a series (start instead ossibly with Heritage of Hastur, available in an "omnibus" book including its sequel, Sharra's Exile, which could be considered the first in this Darkover series - or other good places to start are Bloody Sun or Forbidden Tower). If you have followed the books, I enjoyed this book probably more than the prior three because they seemed to spend less time sitting around talking about politics or gossip, and more time actually doing things. This was also interesting for more insight into Danilo's life (and I won't spoil what is going in his life in case you haven't read the other books). If you like Darkover, definitely read this, although read the Traitor's Sun series first. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, just order one of my recommendations of books to start with and read them. Very good.

Erratum: that should be "`steady-state' theory of the universe", not "`solid-state' theory of the universe". It also bears pointing out that Hoyle's lectures about music here are endearing precisely because they are so naive (and I loved how the headstrong, heavy-drinking scientist in "A for Andromeda" listened to Webern to show how "advanced" he was). As far as music is concerned, Hoyle was no "polymath"; he was, rather, a dilettante-as far as literature is concerned as well, but that's another story.

                            4 out of 5 stars fine for a genre work & Hoyle's best sci-fi.......2003-10-04

I have to say something about this: "It is a great pity that Sir Fred Hoyle...has yet to be recognized as one of our greatest Sci-Fi writers, comparable in importance to HG Wells, AC Clarke, PK Dick and Wm Gibson."

At the time "October the First is Too Late" was published the front tier of science fiction was manned by the trinity of Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, and Fred Hoyle. Yes, Fred Hoyle WAS widely recognized as one of the three best living science-fiction writers working in the English language (not a particularly great distinction, however).

Isaac Asimov was right behind, and Robert Heinlein's reputation was rising. (Heinlein had published a quantity of B science fiction, but was more or less redeeming himself.)

Philip K. Dick, on the other hand, was widely regarded as strictly a B science fiction writer, and rightly so. William Gibson hadn't yet published anything. H. G. Wells was considered a classic writer whose works transcended the genre, much superior to any living science-fiction writers except Stanislaw Lem, who was little known to English-speaking readers.

Fred Hoyle, like Isaac Asimov, was an eminent scientist as well as a science-fiction writer. Again like Isaac Asimov, he was also well known as a scientific popularizer. It is interesting that much of his science was very like science-fiction: unsubstantiated conjecture. He was still a staunch proponent of his own "solid state" theory of the universe long after it had been thoroughly discredited. (He coined the pejorative term "big bang" to disparage a competing theory. The term caught on; the disparagement did not.) Later he began promulgating the fantastic notion that life on earth was inaugurated by space spores.

Nearly all of Fred Hoyle's science-fiction is entertaining. None of it has literary value. I regard "October the First is Too Late" as very easily his best novel because 1) it happens to be especially entertaining and 2) its social criticism and philosophical speculation is trenchant. It deserves to come back into print.

5 out of 5 stars Another Sci-Fi Gem from Sir Fred Hoyle.......2002-08-07

I've said it before and I'll say it again: It is a great pity that Sir Fred Hoyle, scientist, mathematician and polymath extraordinaire, has yet to be recognized as one of our greatest Sci-Fi writers, comparable in importance to HG Wells, AC Clarke, PK Dick and Wm Gibson. Wit and intelligence shine through this brillant story about time out of joint and parallel universes, with the 2 main characters providing an interesting contrast between Apollonian (the scientist) and Dionysian (the musician) approaches to life. (For a professional astronomer, Hoyle has a brilliant feel for music, but I hear he was also an accomplished drummer!) The story jumps times and places, from Periclean Greece to the distant, pessimistic future, with another poignant ending. Should be required reading for true Sci-Fi fans.

That's right: the very same British astronomer - a retired Plumian Professor of Astronomy at Cambridge University, the founder of the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge and currently a Honorary Fellow of both Emmanuel College and St. John's College in Cambridge and an Honorary Professor at Cardiff University of Wales - who occasionally challenges the audience of astronomers with daring theories, also writes fiction.

The novel, written in 1966, was set into present time, i.e. 1966. Two colleagues from their common Cambridge times, a composer and a acclaimed particle physicist, meet at Heathrow airport. In a cheerful reunion mood they decide to make one of their student plans come true, and head for a hike in the Scottish Highlands. A pleasant hiking holiday is abruptly interrupted when the physicist learns he has to make an urgent trip to California, since the experiments show an unexpected modulation in the Sun radiation. The composer is invited along, and from there the two characters start an unusual and fantastic journey across the world and - simultaneously - through the time, as the parallel universes suddenly seem to be coexisting side by side, with Britain being in 1966, Western Europe in 1917, North America in mid-eighteenth century, and Greece in the fifth century B.C. But the gap in the time-space is closing... you guessed when.

                            4 out of 5 stars oddly captivating.......1999-09-30

Very much of its 1966 British zeitgeist. It concerns the unlikely adventures of two friends, one a composer and pianist, the other a Nobel laureate physicist. The prose is glib and rather awkward at times, but something about this book is compelling in an indefinable way. Well, the social and philosophical speculation is intriguing; the glamor of the musician's life is attractive. I first read "October the First is Too Late" at age twelve or thirteen, and it may have helped decide me to take up music professionally (so to speak). Speaking of music, I also recommend George Heussenstamm's "Norton Manual of Music Notation".

Based on this utterly scientific study of two reviews, do not give this book to your twelve or thirteen year old unless you are comfortable with him or her becoming a professional musician or physicist. I don't know how much "October the First is Too Late" influenced my choice to study physics, but it is compelling in a way too few of the books I read in middle school are. After more than a decade, I still remember and enjoy Hoyle's description of reality as a series of pigeon holes filled with stories.

                                            Book Description

The first translation of a previously unknown Aztec codex and its initiatory teachings for 2012

                                            • Discloses the potential for great spiritual awakening offered at the end of the Aztec calendar cycle

                                            • Presents the only existing English-language transcription of the Aztec codex, with line-by-line commentary

                                            • Contains the epic poetry and metaphysical insights of Beat poet Marty Matz (1934–2001

In 1961 an unknown Aztec codex was revealed to Beat poet and explorer Marty Matz by a Mazatec shaman in the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico. Originally intended for dramatic performance, this codex presents a profound metaphysical teaching describing how the end of time will bring about a visionary ascent. At the behest of his Mazatec teacher, Matz transcribed this pictorial codex into a literary form that would preserve its initiatory teachings and reveal its secret meanings to a wider audience.Pyramid of Fire is an epic poem that provides a vehicle to transport the initiate into the higher realms of consciousness. It represents a barely surviving thread of teachings that have been passed down in secret since the time of the Spanish Conquest. Revealed are the techniques by which man is transported to the stellar realm after death via the solar energy within what the ancients called the “serpent of consciousness.” Line-by-line commentary by Matz and John Major Jenkins provides insights into the perennial philosophy contained in the codex and its relevance to our times.

Since I dabbled in mind altering drugs in the 60's and 70's I could understand the words and thoughts of Jenkins. Since I first heard of 2012 in Graham Handcocks "Fingerprints of the Gods" I have sought out books on the subject. I have narrowed my reading to the Central American and Hindu trane of thought. I like Jenkins so much I purchased Maya Cosmogenesis 2012. Both should be read by all.

5 out of 5 stars DiaGnosis: A very important document.......2007-02-18

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Beat generation poet Marty Matz explored remote areas of Mexico and learned to speak the Mazatec language. He gained the trust of a Mazatec shaman, who showed him an unknown codex, and also explained to him the meaning behind the pictograms. Marty made a translation and recited it in the poetry clubs of San Francisco. The final page got lost over the years, but John Major Jenkins located a recording of one of Marty's recitals and reconstructed the whole translation.

All other codices that have survived have been interpreted solely by non-indigenous scholars, with the exception of the Popul vuh of the Maya, which was written into a word form from what was originally a pictorial document. This means that the Pyramid of Fire is a unique insight into the philosophy of the Aztecs, which turns out to be fascinating. The true meaning of sacrifice, for example, is simply a transcending of the ego - a self-sacrifice. The metaphorical pictures were misunderstood and resulted in the gory mass sacrifices of prisoners for which the Aztecs later became famous. In fact, the Aztec philosophy turns out to be very similar to that which was known to G.I. Gurdjieff, following his travels across the near East and Asia.

The Pyramid of Fire reveals that the Aztecs had a spiritual technology similar to the Kundalini yoga of the Hindus, in which Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent, is shown to be an identical concept. Though some have suggested this in the past, they lacked the evidence - now we have it.

The last page of the codex reveals that the final New Fire ceremony will bring a fire of purification that will burn away the remains of mortal desires and illusions, that will be the end of obscurity - the obscurity imposed by Tezcatlipoca - the Smoking Mirror, or obsidian mirror. This is a very similar concept to the end-time vision of St. Paul "For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face" (1 Cor 13 v.12) or alternatively, "through a glass darkly". Since Jenkins has already reconstructed the meaning of the New Fire ceremony as a tradition for tracking precession (see Maya Cosmogenesis 2012), and that it was adapted at Chichen Itza (the pyramid of Kukulcan) to correlate with the Mayan end-date of 2012, then it seems that the Quetzalcoatl-Kukulcan-Kundalini teachings are to help prepare mankind for the current time-window earmarked by 2012, when we are due to confront The Other.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden wisdom of Aztec codex.......2005-09-12

John Major Jenkins is best known for his facinating work on the Mayan calendar, such as 'Maya Cosmogenesis 2012' and 'Galactic Alignment'. In this book, he explores the Aztec culture, and in particular an unknown codex discovered by his co-author friend Marty Matz, a 'beat poet' of the 1950's generation. In the book Jenkins provides a complete listing of the 13 page codex, along with his own commentary on its meaning. In addition, there is an autobiographical novella written by Marty, which reminded me of the writings of Carlos Castaneda. Jenkins is convinced of the authenticity of the codex and its part in the 'perennial philosophy'.

I was particularly intrigued by the parallels of the writings of the codex with those of other esoteric sources, particularly the writings of George Gurdjieff, Gnostic, Hermetic. Kabbalah, Hebrew and Christian scripture. Jenkins seems to have a profound grasp of the esoteric meaning behind the writings of the Mayan, Aztec and other Meso-America cultures and their part in the perennial philosophy of the ages.
