5 out of 5 stars YOU WILL LAUGH OUT LOUD WHILE READING THIS BOOK.......2000-10-23

This book has a main character, Craig, who's a professional baseball player who has hit a major slump in the major leagues and takes some time off. While soul searching and trying to maintain some semblance of sanity, Craig takes the reader through his abnormal childhood and reflects on the antics of his mother who was mentally insane. Although the ending leaves much to be desired, the content of the book will make you laugh, and say, "WHAT!" several times. Craig and his mother will stay with you long after you've finished this novel. The most memorable scene for me was the baseball game with the mother being an unofficial coach to Craig by showing him how to run the bases while wearing a full length mink coat. Happy reading.

4 out of 5 stars Curiously compelling. . .and worthwhile.......2000-07-12

Equally impious and improbable, Percival Everett's story of Craig Suder's sacrificing his baseball career to (inadvertently?) end up pursing an unacknowledged life-long dream is likely to disturb respectable folk. Those with delicate sensibilities need not open this wonderfully instructive and sometimes comically funny work. Nevertheless, Everett's finely detailed chronicle of a slumping professional third baseman's journey to self-awareness is an affirmation in the best sense of the word. Bringing in a diverse cast of characters- -including a taxidermically-obsessed baseball manager, an abused run-away sub-teen, and a long-suffering elephant who finds happiness in the Oregon hill country- -Everett leads the slumping pro ball player to an epiphany of the soul which concludes with a satisfying Icarus-like journey that is also a moving tribute to the jazz of Charlie "Byrd" Parker.

Have fun!

Book Description

`The true nature of the threat remains poorly understood, and previously little research has been done on it. This book is an important contribution for concerned practitioners and scholars.' - Yves Doz, INSEAD, France

Corporate Strategies under International Terrorism and Adversity raises key issues facing international business and management in an era of global uncertainty.

Gabriele Suder's second edited book about the security-business nexus analyses and evaluates the main strategic and operational responses to global commerce and management. The contributors explore the complexities and linkages of firms, industries, organizational structures, international relations, markets and terrorism networks. They investigate these networks and offer insight into the strategic behavior of international firms. The authors likewise examine corporate management and performance issues that encompass internationalization and location decisions, global supply chain management and brand portfolio challenges. The book concludes by outlining future challenges and with a discussion of the crucial issues that remain open and that will be shaped by the geopolitical context and the way business adapts its corporate strategies.

Designed to offer key tools for risk assessment and management in this field, this important book will be invaluable to risk strategists, CEOs of international firms, credit risk analysts and academics with an interest in international business and/or risk management.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2007-01-13

This is a very useful collection of works in an area that has very little published about it. It has some interesting chapters on how companies can plan for risk. As a corporate manager I have to admit that before 9-11 I had not even considered the direct and indirect impacts of terrorism. This book helps the manager see risk factors (some that are often overlooked) and plan a company strategy to prepare to lessen the impact.

            Book Description

This book was born from the editor's conviction that a wide set of contributors should provide the economic and corporate sectors with guidelines, developed from rigorous research and case studies, to analyze those adjustments made necessary through international terrorism, as known since September 11th, 2001. It argues that corporate asset protection and accurate business risk assessment is vital to the longevity, and resilience of business.

The volume reveals how the pre-9/11 era of contemporary economic history gave birth to a nexus of a) globalization b) increased systemic vulnerability and complexity and c) the transitions of terrorism. As a result, the post-9/11 era is one which should incorporate risk analysis audits on a regular basis, political and geopolitical risk research, the use of quantitative risk assessment and qualitative risk analysis to implement risk strategy planning, its management and appropriate risk transfer considerations.

The formulated call of this work is for diplomacy and business to incorporate the knowledge and lessons of international threat, security and disaster. Their management may reveal important competitive advantages in the long run.

Terrorism and the International Business Environment will appeal to a wide audience of risk strategists, CEOs of MNCs, credit risk analysts, as well as academics of international business and politics.

5 out of 5 stars Easily one of the best fantasy novels of all time........2006-12-16

This prequel to Green's "Hawk and Fisher" series is, in my opinion, the best fantasy novel of the last twenty years.

Green's serious talent manages to be both the epitome of classic high fantasy and its lampoon all at the same time.

"Blue Moon Rising" professes to be a satiric take on all the mores and folkways of fantasy literature, with the protagonist, Rupert, an unwanted second son in a bankrupt kingdom who doesn't fight honorably combined with a terribly unfeminine and somewhat average-looking princess, Julia, going through what really IS a wonderfully-done classic fantasy story.

If you like fantasy in any form, you have to buy this book. It's that good.

Unfortunately, Green's other work suffers from the same problem that Frank Herbert has with "Dune"- "Blue Moon Rising" is such a good book that it overshadows most of his other work.

Part of what makes "Blue Moon Rising" such a good read is that it's not just a sarcastic comedy, although it is that as well, Rupert is a very real character. He is both the ideal fantasy knight-in-shining-armor and the antihero at the same time. There's a lot of comedy, but be prepared to laugh at one page and then be quiet in a sort of awe at the haunted horror of the next page.

Green is a master of blending both emotions into what is my favorite sci-fi/fantasy novel of all time- and I've read a lot of them.

4 out of 5 stars Blue Moon Rising.......2006-07-07

There seems to be some attempt here to pass this off as a nontraditional fantasy story because of its hero being a second son and its heroine being rebellious and cross, as well as a dragon being a protagonist. No, there's nothing inherently unique about this story; it's the details that make it different and a good read. Green fools us a bit by making us think this is a story about Prince Rupert's traditional quest--but no! That only comprises one chapter, and the rest is actually a story about the Forest Kingdom's battle against legions of demons that are taking over the country, as well as including betrayals in the castle and royal politics.

The politics were actually what really won me over about what was at first looking to be an uninteresting book. Yes, it's funny, and by the end very exciting and has just the right amount of blood and swordfighting, as well as a mystery that is entwined throughout the whole thing. But it's the politics that make it unique, because it really draws readers into the world of royal courts and how a medieval kingdom operates. And because this book centers on only one kingdom, it doesn't become confusing but stays very manageable. To avoid being boring, there's also plenty of adventure, and did I mention blood and swordfighting? Green also did his research, because the kingdom and the swordfighting are both described in detail; magic or no, this is a believable world. (Actually, even that's believable because the magic is leaving the world to be replaced by science; one can assume it would be entirely gone by modern times.)

As for criticism: all small things. Princess Julia's infatuation with Rupert is contrary to her rebellious nature. Though she does learn to live without him for a great deal of time, she still mopes about a bit too much for someone who knows very well how to be independent. Actually, it seems like the supporting characters are all a little one-sided and archetypal, but characters aren't really the main focus of the book. I don't like the fact that Green took an easy way out in ignoring the dragon for the majority of the book, and I think a little more character should have been given to the Demon Prince. The pacing could have been better in the first chapter. Lastly, I think there should be more suspects for who the final betrayer is; the culprit is a little obvious.

                  4 out of 5 stars Twisted I.D. Fantasy.......2006-06-23

Simon Green's "Blue Moon Rising" is a very enjoyable book. The basic tale is classic high fantasy: champion must defeat enemy using powers that before the story takes place were nonexistent or dormant. The book has dragons, goblins, wizards, castles, and kings. It also has lots of political intrigue and humor. The last two ingredients don't always go well together, and at times they battle it out here and it's not clear which style is the winner.

I will recommend this book to readers of high fantasy, and will buy the next in Green's series to see where the characters go.

                  1 out of 5 stars Utterly Disappointed.......2006-06-01

Very very rarely do I give up on a book but this is one that I can't even skim through it. I read the first 100 pages and then started reading every 5 or 10 lines, then every other page, and then just gave up. The second-prince concept shows some promise at the beginning but the author just fails miserably in developing the characters. The book is filled with one-liners and silly slapstick moments that truncate the dialogue so it affords the characters absolutely no possibility of any conversation, reflection, or contemplation. As a result, the writing is choppy and the characters have somekind of a skeleton but no soul. One-liners can carry a story may be for 50 pages. After reading 100 pages of such silly dialogue, the book becomes nothing but a bore.

The book also needs some serious editing. Typos and grammatical errors are ubiquitous. After reading such wonderful works as the Golden Compass, Eragon, and Poison, this book just does not make the cut. In fact, it's one of the worst books I have read in recent years.

                  5 out of 5 stars Typical Simon R. Green.......2006-03-18

This is the only book by Simon R. Green that's not part of the Deathstalker series I've read so far, but for sure it's not going to be the last one. The book starts with a funny twist (A dragon saved from a princess!) and then goes on with detailed duels and introducing new strong characters, political conflicts and finally a blood-soaked battle, everything full of SRG's typical humor which makes the book really enjoyable. It doesn't do anything bad to it that the plot is kind of predictable for SRG-fans, but it takes away a nice idea.
                  Nevertheless, A great book!

Missing children, werewolves and a mysterious castle in the swamps of South Carolina test Rae Richardson's version of reality. Strange things happen around her convincing her that maybe werewolves do exist. The sight of a large black wolf in the swamp only fuels her overactive imagination. Crossing paths with a handsome man ignites a fire in her soul she refuses to acknowledge. Something about this stranger raises her suspicions. Did he have a hand in the children's disappearance? Or was it the over-powering need in her gut to be near him the reason for her mistrust? Nick Anthropos is on a quest, one that does not include saving children or meeting the woman of his dreams, his Lykoian soul mate. Her scent teases his senses and keeps him on edge. It's obvious to him she doesn't know her true self. But can he teach her to be the wolf he knows lies within her soul and save her from the very creature he set out to destroy? If he fails she would be lost forever. Lykoian's get one chance in life to bond with their soul mate forever. Failure is not an option.

Having the privilege of editing Jennie's book is one of the best experiences of my life. Working with her was a pleasure and I am thankful that our paths crossed in this way.

The stories in Blue Moon Rising are incredible. These are amazing women who have overcome so much. But they are women just like you and me. It takes courage to share your story. It is my hope that all of these women will continue in the direction of their dreams and find serenity in God. I also hope that abused women who read this book will find strength to make the changes in their lives to take care of themselves and their children and that women who have been through similar trials will realize that they are not alone. --Dayna Spear (Williams), editor

                        Blue Moon Rising

Blue Moon Rising is a "must read" for women's studies classes and for anyone interested in how women rise above sexism, poverty, racial prejudice, and poor educational backgrounds to build satisfying lives for themselves and for their children. This compilation of seventeen narratives is subtitled "Kentucky Women in Transition." Jennie Brown, who teaches writing at the Western Kentucky University's Community College gathered theses stories by traveling around Kentucky and listening to women who had "overcome tragedy, misfortune, or seemingly insurmountable odds.... to make a positive transition in their lives." Most of the women have struggled to rise above difficult or impossible backgrounds and have managed to either begin or finish a college education. Any professional interested in helping women leave the welfare rolls or interested in preventing women from ending up on welfare roll will find insights into the factors that made it possible for these women to turn their lives around. Often this difference came in the form of a mentor, a loving grandmother or neighbor, or a caring teacher or fellow worker. If we need any reminders of the sexism, the abuse, or the disdain that many working-class women face, Blue Moon Rising provides exactly that. If we have any questions about the ability of women to rise above impossible circumstances, Blue Moon Rising will answer those questions. If we have doubts that many ordinary women live extraordinary lives, Blue Moon Rising will erase those doubts forever.

                        5 out of 5 stars OVERCOMING.......2002-02-21

Reading Blue Moon Rising: Kentucky Women in Transition reminded me of a phrase found in a 1998 document, "The President's Commission on Women in American History," which read: heroism should be understood "as extraordinary responses to extraordinary circumstances by ordinary people." Editor Jennie L. Brown (Bowling Green Community College) has collected stories from 17 Kentucky women who, by that definition, are heroes. She lets them tell their stories without editorial interference and thus bears "witness to their courage, their determination, and the faith that sustained them." These women's lives, their stories, detail a tangle of woes and troubles (there is never just one problem!), ranging from sexual trauma to racism to hunger to illness to despair, and tell the reader far more than any sociological study or statistical analysis.

Jennie Brown made two significant editorial decisions. First, she neither edited nor changed in any way the wording of these stories which came to her either in written form or on audio tape. That clearly empowered those telling the stories. Second, Brown chose to insert poems by Trish Lindsey Jaggers (and one by Patti Lynn Henry) between the individual accounts.

While the poems were not written specifically for this volume, they beautifully connect with the prose. Jaggers, a brilliant young poet, wrote "In My Attic," printed on page 132:

                        In my attic/there is a book/of poems/I have been meaning to write/if only I could find the nerve./There is a page/from a chapter/I have been meaning to/finish/if only I could find the strength./There is a story/I have been meaning to/tell/if only I could find the will./There is a person/I have been meaning to be/behind my attic door/if only I could find the/key.

Jaggers' beautiful words remind us that there are innumerable stories yet to be heard and that we should be thankful that the 17 women in this volume found the courage leave the attic and "find the key." This eloquent book is an affirmation of life, an affirmation of the power to overcome pain and oppression, an affirmation of lifetelling, an affirmation of hope. It is, in other words, redemptive.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful stories from Kentucky.......2002-02-05

After reading Blue Moon Rising: Kentucky Women in Transition, I understood two things that I thought I knew already. All my schooling and life experience have not taught me what this collection of women's stories has-in a way that goes beyond words on a page or statistics in a column. First, that sexual trauma is pervasive and soul-killing, yet healing is possible and a victim is not doomed to perpetuate her abuse on others. Second, that the greatest courage and heroism may not be found on the battlefields of war or the sites of natural catastrophes, but in the homes of everyday people, in the struggles of girls and boys, adolescents, and young mothers.
Jennie Brown used her sabbatical from Bowling Green Community College to travel around Kentucky listening to women's life stories and collecting them in this beautiful, eloquent book. Inspired by her students' writing yet troubled by the absence of published stories about "ordinary women who have achieved-and overcome-obstacles and plain `hard times,'" Brown was determined to "bear witness to their courage, their determination, and the faith that sustained them."
Aside from the introduction, Brown refrains from changing the women's words. This editorial strategy puts the power of telling in their hands, respecting their telling and lending it credence. In language that varies from person to person, so that the collection speaks in many voices, the women trace their journeys, often taking us to low points too grim to contemplate for long, then naming the turning points that allowed them to emerge and to seek emotional and physical health-for themselves and their children or parents. Although sexual trauma is the common experience of many of these women, other forms of discrimination and suffering took their toll, from physical wounding to racism to hunger, despair, and illness.
Brown's second most significant editorial decision was to weave poems by Trish Lindsey Jaggers and one by Patti Lynn Henry between each woman's account. These poems, beautiful in themselves, provide a moving commentary on the inner life of seekers after truth. They were not written expressly for the collection, so it's uncanny at times how the poems reach out to the different narrators. In "Cracks," for instance, Jaggers seems to speak to the others about what they, too, have found: "Water / finds the smallest / crack through which / to seep / in the most dense / of dams." Another poem, "The Trip," speaks to the urge to share and in that sharing to move beyond numbness: "I / want you to know / what it has taken / for me to get / this far-- / much lost / to time, / lonely days / spent sitting / in a hard chair / trying to recall / why / I am / so numb."
One of the contributors describes the path that led her from a relentlessly violent home to her closing resolution: "For my future, I want to help any kid that I can. That's my goal, to make a difference in kids' lives, to change them when they're at the point I was." Ordered by an older brother to take turns beating each other with a plastic bat, her siblings turned on each other. After being beaten and bruised herself she was forced to turn on her younger brother: "I just remember the pain in his face. I thought, I know what you're going through, but I can't stop it. I can't help it. This is what we have to do." How does one undo such messages of hate? For this young woman, a loving couple at Potter Children's Home made the difference: "They had one child of their own, and adopted three others. So when we saw they loved children who didn't belong to them, we could believe they loved us, too."
Her story is followed by "My Turn" a poem that tells us: "Wipe my tears from your eyes; sympathy is not what I want. / . . . / It's my turn / to judge / what size shoes fit my feet, / or whether I'm tough enough to run / barefoot through snow." The message of this difficult, rewarding book affirms that the most painful life experiences need not destroy the self or deny the person a place in the world.

                          Book Description

New York City, the next decade: terrorism is more threatening then ever; law enforcement and civil liberties groups are at each other's throats. NYPD forensic detective Dr. Phil D'Amato is called in to investigate a case of . . . squirrels missing from Central Park! Phil discovers that someone is using a new telecom technology that can transmit what small animals see or hear to human ob-servers. But who-Federal agencies or terrorists? Phil's latest adventure, against a backdrop of a post-9/11 New York City, is supported by a mesh of wild and wise nature in the park and a new generation of cellphones, holograms, transport systems, and forensic computers.

4 out of 5 stars Written by a New Yorker, in this day and age eyes and ears are everywhere.......2007-05-11

It's obvious from reading this book (and a lot of Paul's books) that he is a New Yorker. He describes the cityscape, sure, but he also details how Phil D'amato, his main character, feels about New York: the pride he takes in the skyscrapers, the way he knows the traffic and the subways, and what will get him faster where, and the particular city politics that is New York.

And from someone who has seen their city attacked, a novel about eyes and ears being everywhere, including the rodents that inhabit the city, isn't paranoia, its just precautionary forward thinking. The explosions in the novel, though on a smaller scale that what we have witnessed, are strikingly real.

The book dives right in with a squirrels as spys theory, going through a high level scientific explanation of whether the hearing and sight of rodents could be mapped, recorded and replayed. The pace meanders somewhat in the beginning, but it seems to fit D'Amato's character, as he meanders to put the pieces of the case he is solving together.

The ending, however, is wide open, with some conclusions reached, but no criminal apprehended. Maybe that is as it should be, depicting the war on terrorism as a battle that is hard to win, or even to determine if you are winning.

                          Another good D'Amato read.

Each of Paul Levinson's books gets better and better. He is comfortable in the skin of his charcters and the plot line in "Pixel Eye" is one of the most fascinating to date. I will never look at squirrels in the park quite the same way, without wondering what may be looking back at me! Highly recommended.

                          5 out of 5 stars D'Amato on the Job.......2004-03-28

Paul Levinson's very human forensic detective, Phil D'Amato, is on his way to becoming one of the more memorable characters in detective fiction. This one puts Phil squarely in the path of a nightmare scenario which, one can only hope, is still a long way off. Watching him maneuver in, under, and around is pure joy.

                          5 out of 5 stars best D'Amato yet!.......2003-10-28

Lean, mean, and funny. This mystery/sci-fi concoction got it just right -- had me page-turning, chilled, laughing, contemplative about our future, all at the same time. And the New York City ambience is top-drawer. I could feel the energy of the city -- the music, the traffic, the crush -- on lots of pages (I've been to NYC many times, and love it). Eagerly looking forward to Levinson's next.

4 out of 5 stars Another home run - mixes science fiction, humor & mystery.......2003-10-28

I invite you to be amused and intrigued at the same time by reading Paul Levinson's new book "The Pixel Eye" featuring New York Forensic Detective Phil D'Amato. It's a different world today than it was on September 10, 2001. Paranoia runs deep in many of us and this book is a great book for the paranoid.

We have all seen squirrels running around the park collecting their nuts. What would happen if those squirrels were fitted with a brain chip and could monitor our every move or get into the nooks and crannies of a major office complex or the heart of city government and set off bombs? This brings a whole new dimension to the old adage "I wish I could be a fly on the wall." Levinson explores that possibility in a book that is a real page-turner. It is well-crafted. You really don't know who the "bad guy" is until well toward the end. There are suspects on every page.

When you read the first chapter, you can't help but to chuckle at the concept of missing squirrels and the importance that the New York police seem to have placed on this matter. But as the tale unfolds, it becomes clear that something is terribly awry and it is up to Phil D'Amato to put the pieces together and resolve the issue.

We do learn who the culprit is by the end of the book, however it closes in such a way that a sequel seems almost guaranteed. I enjoyed the book. It entertained me. There was an element of intrigue and it also made me laugh. It made me speculate on all of the possibilities of bugged squirrels and rodents running around my back yard.

I AM CURRENTLY RE READING THIS BOOK, IT IS SO FULLL OF INCREDIBLE INFORMATION. MY WHOLE BODY SHIVERS AND TWITCHES AS I READ IT. SHE EXPLAINS THE DIFFERENT BODIES THAT MAKE UP OUR EXPERIENCE. THE PHYSICAL BODY,WHAT OUR SOUL SELECTS AS THE VEHICLE IN WHICH TO HAVE OUR INTERACTIONS, THE MENTAL BODY, WHICH CONTROLS THE PHYSICAL BODY AND CAN ACT AS A TREMONDOUS BLOCK OR BRIDGE DEPENDING ON HOW IT IS USED TO FURTHER SPRIRITUAL PROGRESS, THE SPRIRITUAL BODY,THE UNMANIFEST PART OF OURSELVES WHAT WE RECOGNIZE IN OTHERS, LIKE WHEN WE FIRST MEET SOMEONE AND KNOW WE KNOW THEM,AND THE EMOTIONAL BODY, THE STICKY AND MOST EARTH BOUND PART OF HUMANS. THE EMOTIONAL BODY KNOWS NO SENSE OF TIME OF SPACE IT IS COMPLETELY SELF SEFFECIENT AND CAN ONLY BE ACCESSED BY THE SPIRITUAL BODY, AND SO IT IS UP TO US TO BECOME AWARE ENOUGH TO QUICKEN OUR FREQUENCY SO THAT THE EMOTIONAL BODY CAN LIGHTEN AND RELEASE THE INFINITE AMOUNT OF PAIN AND ANGER AND EXPERIENCE THAT IS HELD THERE, TO COME INTO THE LIGHT. THERE IS SO MUCH IN THIS BOOK, COSMIC ORGASM, ASTRAL ENERGETICS,THE UNENDING PULSATION OF LIFE AND DEATH, AND THAT AS WE PROCEED THAT TOO WILL BECOME UNNECESSARY FOR OUR GROWTH. A STUNNING AND YES VERY CHALLENGING BOOK, VERY VERY VERY MUCH WORTH THE EFFORT.

Content is 5 stars.Slow reading due to presentation.I would have preferred to have terms defined, better and material presented in more simple terms. Words she is VERY fond of,like 'positionality',and holigram, left me wondering how she definded them. There is dictionary of terms in the back, but it was of only limited use.She makes you work for the information, on this book, but it's worth the effort.
