Book Description

Secret Father is a suspenseful drama of family and politics set in Cold War Berlin. Missed signals, cloaked motives, false postures, and panicked responses echo tragically across borders and generations when, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, a father and son recount the tense events of nearly thirty years before. In 1961, just before the Wall rises, three teenagers from an American school in West Germany travel to the Communist side of the divided city to join a rally. Unknown to them, their parents have unfinished business reaching back to World War II which will pull the teens into the vortex of an international incident.

4 out of 5 stars A great story in a historical context.......2006-07-26

A cold war era thriller. Three rebellious teenagers' adventure turned into nightmare in the pre-Berlin-wall Berlin. A mixture of suspense, intrigue, history, and above all friendship and father-son relationship. Excellent protrait of characters and a touching story.

5 out of 5 stars Spying for thinkers.......2005-04-21

I think I have read every "spy novel" on the planet, from old Ambler to the current day. This is a special one.

First of all, Carroll is not a spy novelist, but rather a novelist who wrote here about spies. His development of character, use of language, and pacing all are quite distant from the likes of Robert Ludlum. Not that Ludlum isn't fine - I read him also - but Ludlum is about action and noise and not about characters or feelings. Think rather of John LeCarre but without LeCarre's depression, or Alan Furst but with more evolved characters.

Carroll uses a tried-and-true technique, with chapters moving back and forth between the viewpoint of the two primary characters. This is momentarily jarring the first time it happens but then slides nicely into place, no longer intrusive. The book flows well.

This is a first class effort, comparable to Furst's Dark Star and Ambler's A Coffin for Demetrios and the best of LeCarre. But it will make you think.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Effort.......2004-05-14

Secret Father, James Carroll's newest novel, provides challenges to its readers. Most of the characters are not very likeable; others are remote - existing only in the memories of other characters; the plot is slower than those of the thrillers it resembles (it is not a thriller, at least in the technical sense). It is nonethless an engaging read and a welcome return to fiction by Mr. Carroll.

Carroll's novels usually focus on unusual and talented people caught up in significant 20th century events. In his best novels, such as Mortal Friends, the characters are so rich that readers can't wait to find out how the characters end their stories. The plots zoom, with time passing quickly for both the characters and the readers. Lack of attention for a page can result in losing command of time, place, and machination. There is usually a full measure of sadness, often related to a lost or poisoned love.

Secret Father revisits these usual elements, but with a different and less satisfying rhythm. Almost the entire book takes place over a three day span. Even with flashbacks and forwards, the epic scale common to most of Carroll's work is absent. Several fascinating backstories are truncated. Still, the sense of place and presence - 1961 Berlin and the post WWII blame and spy games - are up with Carroll's best. He also captures the dynamics of American military and business people.

Reading Secret Father is like listening to a new album by a favorite jazz artist who is trying to do things a little differently. Here they are intimacy and focus on a very few days in several people's lives rather than a big broadstroke about significant issues. He could probably have written another "big book" about the period, and it might have been more fun to read, this book was his real love right now rather than our fantasy love, and Secret Father will tell you what that means. It's better than a "greatest hits" album because it's new and different, but you can still listen carefully for familiar chord changes and smile.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping!.......2004-01-13

James Carroll tells gripping stories that invariably invite us beneath the compelling events unfolding before us into the heart of his characters, encouraging us to join with them as they grapple with what it means to be a human being in a world filled with conflict and emotional complexity.

The setting is Berlin before the Iron Curtain was constructed with a focus on events unfolding within the world of espionage. Yet it is the relationships between the characters of this ensemble that lie at the center of this story. Where does one's sense of responsibility for the people we love begin and end? What motivates us to expressions of concern? When do we step back and allow our loved ones to grapple for themselves with what life brings them? We have fathers and sons, mothers and sons, friends and lovers doing their best to make their lives together work. Sometimes they simply don't.

The circumstances confronting these characters, both in the present and within their pasts, are worth considering. Mr. Carroll does a fine job of drawing the reader into both the intriguing story and the characters, to the point that what happens to each of them really matters. There are no cookie cutters being applied here folks, just damn good writing, which is precisely what I've come to expect from this fine author.

4 out of 5 stars not just a spy thriller.......2003-12-23

SECRET FATHER is really two novels in one. First is an espionage thriller set in early 1960s Berlin, just before the Berlin Wall went up. Also, and more importantly, SECRET FATHER is a moving meditation on fathers and sons, and the things that make meaningful communication between them difficult.
The story concerns three teenagers:Michael Montgomery, Kit, and Ulrich (a German). They journey to East Berlin to see a May Day parade, flush with youthful energy. Michael and his father, an American banker, split narrative duties. Carroll cuts between the kids (betrayed and arrested) and Mr. Montgomery's alliance with Ulrich's mother to try to win their sons' freedom. Complicating matters are the fact that Ulrich's mother is now married to an American spy and that Ulrich now possesses a mysterious film cannister everyone seems to want.
The idea of fathers and sons knowing each other recurs throughout. The identity of Ulrich's real father is important, as is Michael's strained relationship with Mr. Montgomery. In a moving coda set just after the Wall falls in the '80s, Ulrich makes sure HIS son will know his father, even if he may not be around. Highly recommended.

The Ancient Order of Moridura is a thrilling, action-packed novel about secrets borne of both modern technology and ancient spirituality. When a Scottish electronics tycoon receives an insistent request from the enigmatic Ancient Order of Moridura to deliver a young physicist to a remote monastery in Spain on pain of death, he undergoes a quest that will put him at odds with the American defense industry - which keenly desires the physicist's discovery - and the monastery's bizarre secrets, including an ancient entity called "La Bestia" stowed within its depths. An exciting read from cover to cover.

4 out of 5 stars the ancient order of Moridura.......2007-03-15

"Peter Curran's novel is a very savvy take on the cloak and dagger monastry
mystery , full of subtle twists and turns. There is a strong fantasy flavour
to this work. I'm a bit of a sci-fi lover so I enjoyed the combination of
technical science and the supernatural - or maybe that should be the
preternatural. The characters spark off one another in both camaraderie and
conflict. Full of surprises - there are some incredibly revelatory moments."

    4 out of 5 stars A gripping read.......2007-02-28

The Ancient Order of Moridura is a gripping read that once started is hard to put down. It is a gothic tale set in an isolated Spanish monastery that guards an ancient and deadly secret. The labyrinthine architecture is matched by an intricate plot, that maintains a sense of suspense throughout the novel. The Ancient Order of Moridura brings together a truly extraordinary mix of characters that stay with the reader long after the book reaches its fantastical climax. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book a compelling read from beginning to end.

      Book Description

Critically acclaimed author John Smolens conjures a world of hidden truths and intrigue in which the familiar is the most mysterious force of all.

For years Samuel Xavier Adams’s father has been a shadow figure in his family’s lives, vanishing and reappearing, keeping a slender connection from afar while his wife and children are haunted by loneliness, his daughter wasted by addictions, and his son, Sam, hounded by his father’s enemies. Sam has spent his life trying to discover what his father, who “worked for the government,” was doing that was worth the family’s ruin. Sam’s insistence on answers and his suspicions of his father’s involvement in the events of November 1963 drew the wrong kind of attention from powerful quarters, scuttling his journalistic career. But at least, Sam believed, he had put his dealings with his father to rest.

Now the older man has resurfaced, has been seen slipping in and out of his wife’s hospital room moments before her death. Her autopsy report is suspicious and her ashes are missing. And Sam is again on his father’s trail, in a high-stakes game of hide-and-seek played out in the dark underworld of Boston’s hushed and foggy roads and waterways. There are other players in the game—many of them figures from the past whose allegiances and motives are tangled and obscure. All are racing toward a deadly reckoning, and for Sam it may be the last chance to solve the puzzle of his life by seeing his father clearly for the first time, before he inevitably vanishes again.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Review of Invisible World A Novel by John Smolens.......2003-05-03

Samuel Xavier Adams, the first-person narrator of The Invisible World, A Novel, by John Smolens, is convinced that his own father shot President Kennedy from the grassy knoll and writes a book with his conclusions, proving means, motive, and opportunity. A cover-up campaign raises doubts about his points, and his book soon is considered just another Kennedy assassination conspiracy theory. The novel opens years later with the death of Sam's mother. She is dying in the hospital; he is visiting with her, and she is lucid; he goes to the cafeteria; twenty minutes later he returns to find her slack-jawed stupefied, all memory and awareness wiped out; and she dies thus. Petra Mousakis, a reporter who has been having talks with Sam's mother because she believes Sam's conspiracy theory, says she saw a man enter his mother's hospital room and thinks it was his father. The novel tells the story of Sam's search for his father, to learn if and why he slipped a drug to his wife, Sam's mother, to wipe out her memory.

It's an enjoyable and fascinating read. Sam's colleague Petra is by turns colleague, lover, and soul mate, in a relationship with many twists and turns, and functions novelisticly as Sam's sounding board confidant. As regards his past years, so does his heroin addicted sister Abigail. In the hunt for his father, Sam encounters a sleazy politician, a Cuban freedom fighter turned drug dealer, and other characters with a stake in his quest. It's a dangerous quest, with murders, till at the climax father and son confront each other.

This novel will resonate with anyone who grew up without a father - whether he was not present because dead, because away, because of alcoholism, because of workaholism, or whatever. In Sam's case, his and Abigail's father was a government agent for an unnamed intelligence agency and was away from home for years at a time on secret assignments. Sam's resentment simmers under his need to find and confront his father.

This novel is also a paean to the city of Boston and nearby Salem and to sailing, with much loving detail about Boston / Salem landmarks and history and about sailing minutiae.

I was gripped by the plot, I cared about the characters, and I enjoyed the writing. So I highly recommend this novel.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Boston Thriller.......2003-03-29

Sons usually want to follow in their fathers footsteps. Oh, they can throw an adolescent rant, rebel for a few years, but they usually fall back into the comfortable groove of their fathers legacy. This relationship dynamic between father and son is explored in this exhilarating story written by John Smolens. Smolen's protagonist is Sam Adams, a disgraced Boston reporter and author who could not have a stranger relationship with his father. You see, Adams cannot follow in his fathers footsteps, because his father is the classic shadow man. Only telling his family that he "worked for the government", Adams Sr. was not doubt involved in the shadowy world of the CIA/FBI/Mafia alliance of the 60's and 70's. What he did, whom he killed, all classified. Sam does not know much, but he suspects one thing, that his father was in Dallas, on November 22, 1963.

The father and son connection is renewed when Sam's mother dies, under mysterious circumstances. Sam immediately suspects his father, who must have been covering up his last group of secrets. He immediately begins tracking his father again, a very dangerous thing to do. Soon, other shadow men emerge, thugs, soldiers, spooks. And they have a lot of guns and are not afraid to use them. While the story moves forward, Sam does a mental retrospective as he recalls his childhood, one full of long fatherly absences and sudden location changes. As he grows up, his father becomes more and more distant, never more so than on that day in Dallas. The story of Abigail, Sam's tragic sister is also told, highlighting the damaging effect that Adams Sr. has on the family. Meanwhile, the mysterious forces get closer and closer, just as Sam gets closer to the truth.

This book has some problems, namely some clichés and confusing character turns. However, this is overshadowed by Smolens interesting writing style. It reminds me of a street smart Ed McBain mixed with a somber Alan Furst. Boston and the rest of scenic New England is portrayed in a kind of smoky elegance, with plenty of Bruins hockey and pub scenes. New England kind of lends itself to this kind of conspiracy writing, especially concerning JFK's murder. The reader is treated to a good group of characters, and some customary Boston politicians. So, Boston and murder seem to go well together, and Smolens writes it very well.

5 out of 5 stars The Invisible Word.......2003-03-17

This is a well-written story that captures the known and unknown world that surrounds a basically down and out writer, who is still coping with the secret CIA life of his father. The death of the writer's mother, presents a clash between the two worlds, the one of his sun and the shadow life of his father. Beware once you start reading, this book with be hard to put down.

5 out of 5 stars fast paced book, throughally entertaining.......2003-01-13

Sam Adams, a journalist, has never really known his father. He has figured out through the past that his father was a fervent believer in democracy and has been a employ for the CIA, mob, etc. working on jobs he believed the government required him to do. Being a patriotic servent his father's presence was never perminant in his home. Looking upon the events of the past he suspects that his father may have been the assasin of J.F.Kennedy. He publishes a book connecting his father to the event. As a result, many other try to find the truth behind Sam's theory, and are after Sam's father. As the result, the search of Sam's father heightens. When Sam's mother mysteriously passes away and Sam realizes that his father has done it to hush her, for she has been questioned by those in search of Sam's father. Sam is then determined to find his father. Smolens will guide you through a wide range of emotions rare to experience form a single novel.

      Book Description

Brown is often called the first American novelist. Originally published in 1799, Ormond was inspired by enlightenment philosophers and Gothic writers. The novel engages with many of the period's popular debates about women's education, marriage, and the morality of violence, while the plot revolves around the Gothic themes of seduction, murder, incest, impersonation, romance and disease. Set in post-revolitionary Philadelphia, Ormond examines the prospects of the struggling nation by tracing the experiences of Constantia, a young virtuous republican who struggles to survive when her father's business is ruined by a confidence man, and her friends and neighbors are killed by a yellow fever epidemic.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Get To Know the Father of American Fiction.......2001-11-22

Although this is not Brown's greatest work (Edgar Huntly and Weiland are superior) it is still a compelling work. Brown has taken the Gothic genre and manipulated it's stock images and characters to create unqiue worlds. The novel starts off slowly, but builds as Constantia unwittingly comes under the influence of Ormond. We are never certain whether we are steeped in a stereotypical Gothic world or perhaps uncomfortable close to reality.
Typical of Brown, the ending is deceptively complete. As an author attempting to understand that anxieties and fears of the New Republic, Brown addresses an American readership with themes that are still compelling today. The limitations of reason, the limitations of morality, and the place of faith in our lives.
Brown's four Gothic novels should be read together, to get a complete sense of his concerns for the nation, but the Library of America thoughtlessly left this novel out with their printing of Brown's works. One can only hope that with the continuing interest in Brown's fiction this novel will become available to the reading public.

      5 out of 5 stars Enslave thy neighbor...part 4.......2005-10-20

A confrontation with Azusa after the revelations of his mother's affair (and the attempted gang rape of Hatsumi) leaves Hatsumi with mixed feelings about him. She struggles with the residual feelings of love for him even as Ryoki still persists in his attempt to make her his girlfriend, despite her refusal. Suddenly the whole complex is ignoring the Narita family as well, and Hatsumi thinks it's because she refused Ryoki. At first she decides to submit to him to smooth everything over, but he has a different idea in mind and asks Shinogu, Hatsumi's older brother, to be his private tutor. He doesn't really need it, he is just looking for any excuse to be closer to Hatsumi and to resolve her family being ostracized. Suddenly her feelings about him are becoming, well, less defined as hatred and nearer to something approaching love, but her brother has too much concern over this sudden development in her attitude... and on top over all of that Akane, Hatsumi's younger sister, is trying to cope with her feelings of love for Subaru... It's just one confusing romance after another.

Read this manga... I am not kidding you. The plot is wonderful, the art is wonderful, it is just what you are looking for if you crave a good Shojo manga.

5 out of 5 stars Another Perfect Volume.......2005-07-07

After what Azusa did to Hatsumi, you'd think she'd hate him, but somehow, she just can't. Ryoki however, doesn't seem to have this problem.

Something happens to make everyone in the complex ignore Hatsumi's family. Fortunately, Ryoki has a plan to endear the Naritas to his mother . . . And is Hatsumi finally starting to fall for Ryoki?

Also, Akane confesses her love to Subaru, but how will this Otaku nerd react?

This is a great volume. The shock of volume 3 is over, but the aftershock is just as engrossing. If you loved the previous books, you'll love this one too.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Gimmick is stick to its title--it really is HOT.......2004-10-06

I fell at the beginning that some of the characters are twisted in this story.

Yet, that's what make them so unique and original. The characters in this manga will left strong impression on you.

Hatsumi, the main character is a kind hearted girl but also a pushover girl who cant stand up and got tongue tied in nasty situation. So, when her long time no see childhood neighboor Ryoki showed up his nose and start bullying her, she cant do anything but abide by his rule. He makes her his slave and order her around as he holds his power over her (a secret-- he saw Hatsumi purchased a home pregnancy test for her little sister who's still in Junior High School). Threatened by Ryoki Tachibana promised to tell his mom--Mrs. Tachibana (who is by the way holds position like the Queen of the employee complex where they all living because her husband is a director), Hatsumi can only agree to be his slave, cause she didn't want her family get in trouble with the Tachibana family.

To complicate things, there are many other people that involve in this twisted but exciting story line.
Atsuza, Hatsumi childhood friend come into the picture and try to rescue Hatsumi from the evil Ryoki, he act so kind that Hatsumi cant help but falling in like with atsuza who also is a model. But to make matter worse, atsuza aliby in doing those stuff is because he has a plot of revenge against Hatsumis's father due to somehting that happen in the past.

While plotting to do something bad to her (try to gang up some his model friends to rape Hatsumi), Ryoki comes to the resue. It seemed that Ryoki slowly turn to be in love with Hatsumi after all. Hatsumi fell all overwhelmed with all that happening in her life and confused with the sudden change in treatment that she received from Ryoki.

So, do u think that their romace (Ryoki and Hatsumi) works out in the end?
I think you should find out for yourself cause I've spilled too much juicy information alreasy (*wink* *wink* ;) )

          5 out of 5 stars One of the Genre's Best-kept Secrets..........2004-06-19

Perhaps, the planets are aligned improperly or his hair is the wrong texture or people prefer the taste of Coca-Cola to RC.... Who knows why Russel Like has not gotten the attention he deserves? The only question we can really answer is, should we read his books? If you didn't answer with a resounding "yes," it can only be because you haven't read one. In a genre where humour is generally laid on in a lumpy layer of slapstick and puns, Like's books are in a class by themselves. Funny, wicked, clever, thought-provoking, and wildly imaginative -- A BOWL OF FRUIT, just like AFTER THE BLUE, is a comic delight. His characterss would seem absurd if they weren't so much like the people you sit and the dinner table with on holidays. Or, maybe they are more like the people you pass on the street and feel an urge to follow, merely because of something they were mumbling. Like's books give off the same kind of allure, and, if you are smart, you'll follow wherever they lead.

          5 out of 5 stars I Read Him When.......2004-06-12

I feel as if I've gotten in on the ground floor of something that's going to be huge! When Russel Like inevitably collects his first "best book" or "best movie" award, I'll be able to say, "I read him when."

If you like science fiction and/or humor, then you MUST read, "A Bowl Of Fruit, A Whale in the Woods." If you don't like science fiction and/or humor, you should read it anyway, because Russel Like simply uses the genre as an opportunity to look at - and more important, to show his readers - everyday occurrences in delightful new ways.

Image what Dave Barry would be like in a slightly awry alternate reality, and you have a glimpse of what Like is like in "A Bowl of Fruit."

          Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Wild, whimsical, eccentric, and uproariously funny!.......2004-05-18

His career uninspired and his personal life unrelentingly tedious, Greg Fisher started to mess around with a special device that would embroil him with alternative realities. Author Russel Like has an original, somewhat quirky, and always entertaining flair for writing the kinds of stories that are so easy to pick up and so hard to put down! A Bowl Of Fruit, A Whale In The Woods is especially recommended for science fiction and fantasy fans who like their tales wild, whimsical, eccentric, and uproariously funny!

The Thomas Merton Encyclopedia is a great resource for anyone who wants to dig deeper into the thoughts of one of the great Christian writers of the modern age. Because he was so prolific in his writing, sometimes it's hard to remember exactly what he wrote or where he wrote it.

No Merton enthusiast's library should be without this excellent book.
