Book Description
This reflection on colonial culture argues for an examination of “Indochina” as a fictive and mythic construct, a phantasmatic legacy of French colonialism in Southeast Asia. Panivong Norindr uses postcolonial theory to demonstrate how French imperialism manifests itself not only through physical domination of geographic entities, but also through the colonization of the imaginary. In this careful reading of architecture, film, and literature, Norindr lays bare the processes of fantasy, desire, and nostalgia constituent of French territorial aggression against Indochina.
Analyzing the first Exposition Coloniale Internationale, held in Paris in 1931, Norindr shows how the exhibition’s display of architecture gave a vision to the colonies that justified France’s cultural prejudices, while stimulating the desire for further expansionism. He critiques the Surrealist counter-exposition mounted to oppose the imperialist aims of the Exposition Coloniale, and the Surrealist incorporation and appropriation of native artifacts in avant-garde works. According to Norindr, all serious attempts at interrogating French colonial involvement in Southeast Asia are threatened by discourse, images, representations, and myths that perpetuate the luminous aura of Indochina as a place of erotic fantasies and exotic adventures. Exploring the resilience of French nostalgia for Indochina in books and movies, the author examines work by Malraux, Duras, and Claudel, and the films Indochine, The Lover, and Dien Bien Phu.
Certain to impact across a range of disciplines, Phantasmatic Indochina will be of interest to those engaged in the study of the culture and history of Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos, as well as specialists in the fields of French modernism, postcolonial studies, cultural studies, and comparative literature.

Great work in post-colonial studies.......2001-04-26
This book is absolutely brilliant. Of course, anybody can say this without much effort: "Thanks for telling me (that the colonized is exploited and misrepresented) , I know it all along already." But nobody seems to take the time to show how this happened, and in what ways hegemonic power was construed, and what kind of colonial subject was formed. Norindr's vigorous work fills the relatively big void in the post-colonial field: the lack of serious, critical historical scholarship. Too many theories, too little archival work. I recommend Phantasmatic Indochina to anybody interested in Post-colonial studies and Southeast Asian studies. If you love Ann Stoler's Race and the Education of Desire, you'd like to read Phantasmatic Indochina as well.

Not for consumption outside of academia -- if there........1999-05-25
This book is addressed to the phantasmic someone who disagrees with this: colonists exploit the colonized. This book is not for someone looking to better understand the French colonial aesthetic -- who they wanted to be, how they were influenced by their surroundings, and how they reflected this in their art. The author reviews French art relating to Indochina with a monochromatic lens that filters everything out of view exept the evil of colonialism. No insights turn up that are not already possessed by sentient humans.

I Kid You Not.......2007-07-31
This was an interesting read. Why spend all sorts of money on yarn when I already have two fuzz producing critters? But then again who wants to wear a hat that smells like dog?
Smell was my biggest worry when I ran across this book. I know only too well how stinky my wet dogs can be, but apparently they say the smell can be washed out quite permanently and easily and then they ask if one has ever smelled a sheep up close. Good point!
With smell issues out of the way, I read on with interest. Instead of throwing away all of that lovely golden fur floating around my home, I might actually be able to use it. Of course this involves quite a bit of work. Daily brushings, the labor intensive washing, washing and washing again of the fuzz (without clogging your drain in the process), then one must card (comb)the fuzz so it all lays the way it should, then you've got to oil it, spin it (an art in itself) and ply it into yarn. Yikes, it looks so easy when laid out in a few pages in a book but it sounds too much like work for someone like me.
After you've done all of the above, if you're one of those inexhaustible types, you can knit hats, scarves and just about anything that you'd knit with wool. The projects seem pretty straightforward but the instructions assume one has some familiarity with knitting. There are scarves, hats, mittens sweaters, even a doggie sweater (the pic shows a pug smugly wearing a sweater made from newfoundland fur, way too cute!). You must know the basic stitches, know all about knitting the round, know how to use your double pointed and circular needles and how to work fair isle/intarsia if you want to finish many of these items. I would've appreciated a little knitting 101 section here (especially for the color work, are you supposed to purl or knit the colors??), but that's just me and I suppose that stuff can easily be found on google but still . . .
The other downside of this book are the black and white photos. The items are described as beautiful tones of "golden retriever fur" or whatever and then they show a grainy b&w photo of a fuzzy looking scarf which was so disappointing. There also are not nearly enough photos showing how to make and use the drop spindle (though the carding section was well illustrated and appears simple enough). I seriously doubt I could learn the art of spinning dog fuzz using only this book and will look for a video if I ever get my fuzzies washed and ready (I think this part intimidates me the most!).
There is a section outlining breeds and their "spinability" for those on the lookout for fuzz machines. Lucky for me, my two goldens are top producers but my lab is a poor choice. Apparently, though, his "short chocolate sprinkles" can be added to all of the glamorously soft golden fur to spice up the color. Who knew?
This was an informative, very niche book, that takes its topic seriously and was a fun read. It's got me looking at the fuzz balls in a new way but I'm not sure if I'll ever work up the energy to collect, wash, card, and then spin this stuff into workable yarn because I'm just too lazy. Though it might make a nice little side business for someone with a lot of time to spare. Imagine a keepsake of your beloved pet like no other. The possibilities are endless . . .
great knitting book for pet lovers.......2006-07-27
finally....a great book for what was once considered annoying pet hair....LOVE IT
Kudos for a resourceful book.......2003-11-30
in this day and age, living in the states, we can be so wasteful. It was refreshing to find a book about recycling, that has nothing to do with paper and plastic. Why didn't anyone think of this before? I'm just really impressed and happy that these books are actually out there. It is important for use to save our resources, before it's too late!
Good Reading.......2001-09-13
I bought this book 2 years ago and it is still good reading. It gives easy-to-follow instructions on how to clean, card, and spin other animal fur as well as doghar.....And it has made me more comfortable to know that there are others who do this and not that I am just spending too much time in the woods (As I have been accused of by neighbors)
How much is that doggy in the window?.......2000-08-17
Golden retriever scarves, Grand Pyranees hats, Siamese socks, and Samoyed sweaters! Kendall Crolius and Anne Montgomery force you not only to examine the logic of what materials to use for knitting, but also offer a new yardstick of the knit value of household pets. I have to admit that if I ever seek another dog, I'm going to be looking at the silky haired retrievers instead of short haired varieties that offer little more than dander and love. No more bulldogs or boxers for me--I want a dog that I can brush, spin, and knit big soft golden retriever sweaters. Truly a breakthrough in pragmatic thought!

Read the review. I still recommend this 100%.......2006-05-13
It' a shame, but I have decided to only give this book 4 out of 5 stars. It's not a bad book by any means. In fact, considering what we could have gotten, it's an 'amazing' book. So I still recommend it for new or veteran spider-fans, however reading the rest of this review will reveal with a star was dropped.
The bulk of the book is made up of a comprehensive encylopedia, which covers most of the people, places and objects linked to Spider-Man over the past 40 years or so (It seems to end around 2002-2003ish). These are presented in a clear and readable style in alphabetical order with other entries clearly marked. I cannot fault the design of this section, like the Fantastic Four Encylopedia, it is instantly searchable, readable and colourful.
What I can fault however, is the content. No, its not a disaster. Far from it. But the page count requirements have obviously taken their toll on the length of a large percentage of the entries. The Fantastic Four book more or less got away with it's page count as for the most part it only have one comic to cover (but that volume does cover the Human Torch's time in Strange Tales, the Thing's in Marvel Two-In-One and Fantastic Force as well as numerous one-shots and mini-series). But compare that to Spider-Man who has had over his 40 year history and average of 3 or 4 titles a month published, in addition to various one-shots and specials. Simply put, although Kit Kiefer does miracles with his brief, it's not enough.
The main encylopedia has an addendum which lists entries which have smaller, more tenuous links to Spider-Man, with smaller entries and no pictures. This is a welcome addition.
In addition to this, the book also contains a number of text essays which focus on various toys, television series and, as one would expect, the big budget blockbuster movies.
Spider-Man is the public face of Marvel. This book is still a must-have purchase for anybody remotely interested in investigating Spider-Man's long and complex history. I just feel the character deserved more respect from Marvel, who could easily have upped the page count and delivered the ultimate Spider-Man reference book.
Great resource for Spidey fans.......2005-12-04
A great resourse for Spidey fans, you can find out about the villians that Spidey have fought, the heroes he worked with, the supporting characters of the Spider-man comic, it will have a bio, and the stats (strength, speed, durability, intellegence, fighting skills, and energy projection) of each character. You can even read about the Spider-man movies, television, cartoons, and toys.
A must have for all Spider-man fans, you'll enjoy it, believe me.
So Great.......2005-02-21
As a Spider-Man fan, I loved this book. It has everything a Spider-Man fan needs to know. So I would give this a 5 star book. Read it!

(Mostly) Spectacular Spider-Man Factbase.......2004-08-24
An informative read, this book contains a highly ambitious study of past characters/cross-overs in the Spider-Man realm from 1963 to 2002. The textual chapters, however, are written in a rather trite form, filled with annoying, smarmy pop-culture references seemingly aimed (and misfiring) at younger audiences. And yet, these chapters are mercifully brief, and not the real grabber for the book.
This Book Is GREAT!!!!!.......2004-06-25
At first, when i saw the cover of this book, i thought that it was a book suitable for a five year old but once i opened the book, I knew that i was wrong. This book was filled with facts about your friendly neighborhood spider-man and many of his allies and foes such as Venom, the Vulture, Dr. Octopus, The Lizard, and many many more. This book is great for all ages and is a great to read whenever you want. If you are a spider-man fan, you must buy this book.

"Dumpster diving" is an unfortunate term for a noble pursuit: reclaiming and reusing perfectly good things that are being thrown away by wasteful or lazy people. It is also a political act highly frowned upon in materialistic societies because it removes one from obligate consumerism. And John Hoffman has written the ultimate guide for perfecting the art. A college graduate with a good job, Hoffman doesn't have to Dumpster dive: he loves to, and lives better--and more freely--because of it. In nations like America, there is an incredible amount of great stuff--often in great shape--thrown out every day. And Hoffman tells you how to claim it as your own.
At this point, I have a confession to make: I am a sometime Dumpster diver myself. Almost all of the furniture in our house has been found abandoned on the streets in our upper-middle-class neighborhood or nearby college campuses: sofas, tables, bookcases, lamps... you name it--even some of our several household computers! Personally, I wouldn't do some of what Hoffman advocates (such as diving for food), but as in the tradition of all Loompanics Press books, this is a no-holds-barred, tell-all book that assumes its readers can make decisions appropriate to their own lives.

Definitely geared toward novices, great read!.......2005-06-15
This book lays it out all very clear for those who have never even SEEN a dumpster. I go dumpster diving so none of the information was really all that new to me, save for the info he gives on food (especially bloated & dented cans). I really enjoyed reading his childhood stories & diving experiences. I paid roughly $15 for the book after shipping costs over Amazon. I had a gift certificate so for me it wasn't that big of a deal. For people who are really tight on money, it would probably be better for you to just go out and DIVE! If you lack commonsense & any safety precautions at all, than the $15 could definitely prevent any injuries. I loved this book and was considering ordering the sequel, but the reviews I've read on it have not been very positive. Like many have said, there is a lot of things you must look past - profanity, disrespect, etc. All in all I think it's a good book.
Rather Disappointing.......2004-08-30
I had hoped for more from this book. This is what I found: incoherent politics, sometimes amusing anecdotes about growing up in a dumpster-diving family, & a dearth of practical information. Much of it is written as if it were intended to convince people who are dubious about dumpster diving that it is not as seedy or foul as it's thought to be. I think it misses its mark here, since it's likely that anyone who might consider reading this book is already more open-minded in this regard.
But not to be entirely critical, there is some merit to the book. There *is* practical advice here. Some of the philosophizing catches fire. Many of the anecdotes are rewarding, both as useful examples for your own diving & in their own right as well. But having said this, even the positive aspects are limited. For example, a lot of the practical advice is quite basic, things that a reasonably competent person could be expected to figure out on his or her own.
The good stuff could have been extracted & put into a fifteen page pamphlet & been well worth two or three dollars. As it is, it's not worth the money or the time it takes to ferret it out of all the dross, unless you have more than enough of both to spare.
I've done it myself!.......2003-12-20
I have been diving for about 16 years and I love to do it! I found John's book at Tower Records in Fresno, CA about six years ago. It was perfect! Most of what John said in his book I was already doing. The best excuse I have used is "I'm looking for boxes, I'm moving." And to keep a box or two in your car just to make it look good. I have gone as far as getting gate codes to gated communities. Working as a pizza delivery man helps. With this book and my own experience I have made an easy money and I have had so much fun doing it too. Pick up a book today and I promise you will be amazed!
make real money from other people's trash.......2003-11-13
This book is all about looking through others people's garbage cans, and finding something useful, valuable, or sellable. A LOT of good tips, especially the part about dealing with good-for-nothing rent a cops or other nosy jokers looking to make you feel guilty about being gainfully employed in salvage. Includes tips on how to minimize such confrontations and shakedowns.
The author of this book emphasizes that most people, rather than finding a way to recycle, just put their burdens in the Garbage can; perfectly good and useable stuff: jewelry, watches, money, coin collections, antique toys, reloading supplies, firearms, even brand new goods still in the original box- UNOPENED!
Carry some soap and water and clean up after a dumpster episode. not hard, maybe potentially lucrative to look. Just watch out for body parts...(some people never find them; I seem to find lots).
If you liked this book..........2003-10-17
Hi. I'm Ace Backwords and I did the comics for the "DUMPSTER" book, so of course I think the book was great. If you liked that one you might also like my new book, "SURVIVING ON THE STREETS: How To Go Down WIthout Going Out" (Loompanics). It takes some of the basic self-sufficiency concepts of the "DUMPSTER" book and applies them to living on the streets in general. Check out the www.amazon.com site for more details. Naturally. And buy a copy of "THE ART AND SCIENCE OF DUMPSTER DIVING" while you're at it!
