1 out of 5 stars Unhealthy Parent/Child Interact ions.......2006-09-17

So, you have a child who is advanced academically and needs to gain some understanding of Money and how to deal with it intelligently. This book may do that, but the interactions between parent and child are not examples I would choose to give to my child. My child and I read one chapter, discussed how icky the interactions made us feel, and terminated the reading of this book. Good for compost? Will the worms like it? Maybe.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Was a Superb Gift!.......2005-03-16

I wish I had read this book when I was a kid! I gave my nieces this book for the holidays because I wanted something that was educational as well as fun. The girls were skeptical at first, but we were soon all delighted by the book. It is written in hip, kid-savvy lingo that helps them understand finance, and enjoy it! I strongly recommend this book as a guilt-free gift that will make kids, parents, and aunts very happy.

Kathryn Durham's Mom, Can You Buy Me This?, is a great way to teach children about fiscal responsibility. There are two titles in this series Ryan Gets An Allowance and Richard Gets A Job. In today's ever changing economy, children need to learn to be financially responsible at an early age. Durham uses characters such as Mr. Tax to teach children about the importance of paying taxes. Its an entertaining as well and educational read for children, Durham does a great job bringing the this seemingly difficult information down to a level where children can understand it. Parents might even learn a thing or two! The book also has word problems at the end of each chapter, so children can test out what they learned. I would recommend this book to all parents.

5 out of 5 stars Pleased.......2004-12-31

I am very pleased with the educational book, Mom Can You Buy Me This? Ryan Gets An Allowance, by Kathryn Durham. It is a fun book written from the child's perspective, making it the perfect learning tool for my son. It's as though my child is Ryan's friend and he is shopping with him.

Ryan Gets An Allowance is educational and entertaining. The humor in the book brings my son and me to smiles and laughs. When Ryan stops conversing with his `Mom' and thinks to himself, it is the funniest part of the story. At one point, Ryan states, "This game is only twenty four dollars and tax can't be that much. I paid less than that for roads." `Mom' is also quite the character. She uses just the right amount of wit and humor to get her point across.

My child can really relate to this book. Ryan is just like my son. The prices Ryan has to pay for games are the same he has to pay. The numbers are realistic, which puts everything in perspective for the reader. It's great! And the section on bank accounts really hit `home'. It was good for my son to see such a real example of the importance of starting to save money at an early age.

Another great aspect of the book is that it is user friendly. The word problems are put together very simply. My son was able to read the book and fill in the blanks on his own. I could tell right then and there that he was learning.

Ryan Gets An Allowance was written to educate on matters of finance, but the book touches on other areas of maturity as well. The book helps reinforce to children that it is good to take responsibility. When Ryan compares getting his allowance and saving his money to buy a new game, to becoming a man, it encouraged my child to be responsible and embrace growing up.

There are so many positive messages all throughout this educational and entertaining book. I highly recommend it to any parent that breaks the budget every time there little ones tag along and ask for the newest this and the coolest that.

5 out of 5 stars Great Learning Resource.......2004-10-30

I found both of the titles in this series to be an excellent resource in helping to teach my children about finance and fiscal responsibility. I especially liked how the author presents what many kids might consider to be a dull topic in engaging fictional stories that both entertain and educate. As a concerned and caring father I'd love to see some Dad, Can you Buy Me this? titles. The series gets two thumbs up from this Dad!

It's not often you can make taxes fun! I bought the first installment, Ryan Gets An Allowance, for my nieces. It was a great success, so I decided to check out the second book, and was just as impressed. I am recently out of college and new to the job world myself, so I found the book useful as well as my teenage niece. I would certainly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars A GEM!.......2004-12-08

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Durham's first book, "Mom, Can You Buy Me This? Ryan Gets an Allowance", and found "Richard Gets a Job" to be just as entertaining, beneficial, and informanative. After receiving tens of credit cards offers in my first year of college and going quickly in debt, I vowed that I would never let my children go down the same route. It's an absolute shame that our school systems do not offer overall finance education to children at an early age (before they get their first checkbook and credit card). Ms. Durham has succeeded in finding a way to make finance fun for young kids -- her series is a benefit to society and should be a mandate for our educational system. In "Richard Gets a Job", Richard is stuck at a bus stop, frustrated where all his deductions have gone from his paycheck -- this is not unusual for most of America. Not only did I actually learn a few tricks myself from this book, but I think it is an absolute need for us to teach our children the ins-and-outs of our tax system before they start working. We teach them to drive before they get on the road, we give them degrees before they enter the workforce, so why don't we teach them about taxes before they have to deal with them? Well, thanks to Ms. Durham...now we can.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Buy!.......2003-08-12

I am from Michigan and wanted to know about my state's history, so I picked this book up. This has everything you could possibly need to know about the Native Americans of Michigan, and the surrounding states. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was that it read like a text book. I felt like I was back in school. Out of all fairness, however, it is a history book, so I can't really hold that much against it. It gets redeemed by the small biographies scattered through the chapters.:)

    Book Description

For 500 years the Saxons ruled England, crushing the ancient powers. But a wave of change approaches. Across the Channel in Normandy, William is born-the bastard son of a duke and a magical woman of Druid descent.

As he grows to manhood, William's battle skills earn him respect, but his temper and disregard for his innate magical abilities hold him back. He needs a teacher, whether he wants one or not, and finds one in the beautiful French noblewoman Mathilda. But William is resistant to the very idea of magic, and unless he can accept Mathilda's help-and her love-his imperfectly controlled abilities may destroy him. In an epic battle that spans worlds and ages, magical forces and earthbound armies will be drawn together by William as he fights to achieve his destiny-and reign as King of England.

3 out of 5 stars Rite of Conquest.......2005-09-14

Judith Tarr is an author I generally like. I've read a number of her books, and they are often quite interesting, even if you have to suspend disbelief. Rite of Conquest is well-written. Unfortunately, I don't think this book is one of her best. In order to make William "the Conqueror" "fit" her "Arthurian" image, she has to do a lot of "playing" with what is historically known, and the result is a tale that doesn't look like any histories I've ever seen of this period. That, in itself, is not bad; it's p ossible in fantasy and science fiction to play with historical "realities" to a certain extent. However, she plays so much with the realities of the time, that the characters simply become unbelievable. Their motivations are not rooted ini any actual context(which I think even a "historical fantasy" writer must accept), but in what she would "like", based on certaiin tropes popular among (some) fantasists: namely "happy pagans" and "magic practitioners". She comes up with some pretty odd practitioners of these arts, e.g. Lanfranc, who was later Archbishop of Canterbury. And she makes William a lot "nicer" than he probably actually was, ignoring the fact that the English probably considered him little more than a thug with a crown on his head. But as I said, she writes well, and if the reader is able to keep a very large grain of salt nearby, it is enjoyable.

3 out of 5 stars Not a Bad Historical Fantasy about William the Conqueror & Matilda.......2005-09-01

This is the historical fantasy version of William and Matilda. They are both blessed/cursed with great magic. William is also the reincarnation of King Arthur (which I found extremely difficult to swallow). It follows William and Matilda from 1047-1066 in primarily Normandy & England. The overall story was ok but it was not riveting.

My biggest problem with this novel is the idea that William is actually King Arthur reincarnated. I find it difficult to believe that "William/Arthur" would have been able to justify the slaughter of his own "countrymen" to rightfully rule again.

I enjoyed Judith Tarr's "Pride of Kings" & "Kingdom of the Grail" much more. I guess that's because the stories were more realistic and grounded more in fact rather than so much fantasy/magic such as this one was.

    Rite of Conquest
    Judith Tarr
    Roc, Oct 2004, $16.00, 384 pp.
    ISBN: 0451460022

In 1047, William the Duke of Normandy tries to ignore the magic that flows through his veins as he battles pretenders and contenders who wish to replace him. The old magic thrives in Normandy with beneficial spirits who want to help mankind. Powerful sorceress Mathilda, daughter of the Count of Flanders, is sent to the French King's court where William has come after winning a decisive battle abetted by King Henry.

When William meets Mathilda, she lectures him on the use of his magic so that he does not inadvertently hurt himself or others. Fearing the magic that is the antithesis of Christianity, William flees to his Normandy, but cannot forget Mathilda. He proposes marriage and she accepts. They may forge a dynasty across the Channel where the Church has thrown out the magic, but William must first defeat King Harold.

The story of William's rise to power, consolidation of that power, and his marriage to Mathilda are part of the history books, but also cleverly interwoven into a spellbinding historical fantasy that once again shows why Judith Tarr is the mistress of the sub-genre. Her unique slant on the events leading to 1066 makes for a fun and fascinating read. The use of magic as a benign tool while the battles provide a more mundane (though interesting) look at William's claiming of the throne with church approval maks for a fascinating juxtaposition. RITE OF CONQUEST is a definite keeper.

This is the only newly revised book on the market to target the mid-level undergraduate student. 1 out of 5 stars Keep looking......Very boring!.......2004-11-20

This book was utilized in a psychology of religion class I just took and it is boring beyond belief. Much of the research that was used in the examples were questionable. (Sample sizes were too small and control of extraneous variables in some seemed non-existant). This field of psychology is very young and needs books that can present credible research in a way that can stimulate interest. This book constantly says more research is needed in this or that area, but does little to show that the field has any credibility to it.

4 out of 5 stars A smooth intro to the psychology of religion.......2000-10-03

The psychology of religion, unlike such well entrenched divisions in psychology as developmental or social psychology, is in its infancy. So much so that it is only beginning to establish itself in the institutions of higher learning.

Thus, one of Dr. Paloutzian's objective in writing this book is to encourage students to see the value of doing psychological studies in religion. Surveying the various research undertaken in the past and present, the author gives a summary of the accomplishments of the discipline as well as the areas in which further studies are needed.

Responding to the clamor for an introductory material to the psychology of religion, Paloutzian has written this readable overview of the field. Being introductory in nature the author does not give lengthy discussions of the theories and empirical studies he cites. His goal is not to expound on these but to whet the appetite of reader and then lead him to the pertinent authors and works. On the other hand in the first few chapters Paloutzian elucidates on the various methodologies employed in the psychology of religion, as well as defining what the psychology of religion is and is not.

For those interested in the psychological aspects of religion, or even for those simply curious to know what this seldom heard of area of study is, Paloutzian's work offers a smooth and enlightening entry into this most fascinating field.

          Book Description

The nail that sticks out gets hammered down. This Japanese expression characterizes the attitude of many Asian Americans. We are often taught not to put ourselves forward--not to stick out. But the Western concept of leadership is all about stepping up and standing apart from the group. Is that appropriate for Asian Americans? Or can we lead out of our own cultural strengths rather than being pressed into the Western mold? Paul Tokunaga has been a leader in Asian American, white and multiethnic contexts for many years. He has been active in ministry and in his community. In Invitation to Lead he offers, with surprising transparency, lessons from his own rich experiences--both successes and failures. Many of us aren't sure whether we can or should lead. We are waiting for someone to ask. Or we are just beginning to take on new roles and responsibilities at church, at work or in our neighborhoods. Here, at last, is our invitation to lead.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-07-12

Great book on Asian American leadership. I think that some parts of the book rely a bit too much on the author's personal views (which tend to be based on stereotypes). However, the arguments are persuasive.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, someone who addresses Asian American leaders.......2004-02-21

I'm about halfway through this book, but just reading the first few chapters, I could have sworn I was reading an auto-biography of myself. His experiences are just so close to what I've experienced and hit hard to where I am coming from.

Every ethnicity has it's own issues and concerns that need addressing. Paul Tok really tackles this topic with a gusto and humility that make him very approachable. Even though he is Japanese American, his experiences mimic what most Asian Americans experience. From deferring to our parents to the ridiculous heights we hold education and prestige. He gives us perspective of how he deals with these issues along with dealing with other races.

While this book is geared towards Asian Americans, I HIGHLY recommend leaders of other ethnicities to read this book. It truly shines a light on some of the issues facing Asian Americans and can give insight in how to relate to us.

I had the pleasure of meeting Paul at Urbana 2003 during a workshop he gave on this very topic. Although I hadn't read his book at the time, (and I wish I did), he came across as someone who really wants to help and empathizes with the future leaders of this generation.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended Rading for Asian American Ministry.......2003-12-02

If you are a non Asian in an Asian church, this book will help you understand more. As an Asian American, Tokunaga's book has helped me understand the impact of my culture on why I act the way I do. Good practical advice as well. I can't believe some of the mistakes Tokunaga admitted to but I guess his point is that God can use any of us. On page 199, he says that our young people are leaving the church because the church is irrelevant, stifling and ill-equipped. I think that may be only true on the surface and perhaps the real reason is that our youth are prodigals, looking for boy/girl friends and freedom. The Bible study questions from Moses and Esther are very useful.

5 out of 5 stars Great insight from Paul Tok on Asian American leadership..........2003-07-22

This book is a MUST read for all Asian Americans. Paul Tok's insight into Asian American culture and leadership styles is a great resource to anyone from pastors to lay church workers to people in a work setting. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Very honest and personal... GREAT!!!.......2003-04-23

I haven't finished the book yet, but even half way through it, it really is a great book. The author shares his life very honestly and openly and shares great insight from his years of leading. I think there is a lot of struggle in being an Asian American leader and this book helps to verbalize and bring to light those struggles. Thanks Paul!

The title is not Zen, it refers to... Intuition. The book is about how to develop it. If you like doing endless exercises and keeping a journal, this book is for you. I found no value at all in this work, and very little information, despite the author's PhD claim and a lot of quotes by more famous authors. The theme of this book is a series of exercises designed to improve the reader's "Intuition".
There are many valuable, useful books in the self-help category on the market today that deserve recognition and praise (such as "Happiness Is a Choice" by Barry Neil Kaufman). This book is not one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Dare to Find Your Self.......2000-06-29

This book is a readable, practical, and fun introduction to trusting your intuition and to gaining greater access to the wisdom within. Based on the premise that everyone has inside them all the resources to live abundant and happy lives according to each individual destiny, the book and the exercises are an invitation to transform your way of being in the world. The potential to live with exponentially greater power and satisfaction unfolds to the degree that the reader can accept it. I found that simply focusing attention on my intuition intensified the number and clarity of signals that I got, a clue to the potential power of Sharon Franquemont's thinking. Her style is direct, compassionate, and non-judgmental and full of anecdotes and descriptions that demonstrate the principles she espouses. Franquemont acknowledges the need to be in grounding relationships and to maintain effectively the responsibilities of everyday life while exploring the tools that are part of intuition. She tugs us gently into the spiritual realm and shows how it is intertwined with every aspect of our lives. This is a book that is both profound and friendly. I recommend partnering in this work. Work through the exercises individually, then check in with one or more trusted friends to compare notes and increase opportunities for synchronicity, the exciting things that happen when we begin to get our lives aligned with our purpose. Excellent read. Excellent tool for growth.

5 out of 5 stars Gave me the confidence to hone and follow my instincts........1999-09-30

A textbook of techniques to follow for those who recognize their own intuitive qualities and wish to heighten them or for those who question the existence of intuition in others and themselves. Examples abound of those who have followed the directions of their souls after having become accomplished following Ms. Franquemonts course. One recognizes why we respond in different ways to the world around us and the centers within ourselves, how our brain dominance impacts on our choices and decisionmaking and problem solving. Intuition is described as a tool which we have failed to utilize. Having acquired the skills to do so we can redirect our lives towards their real and genuine purpose with the resulting joy we deserve.

2 out of 5 stars Good content but poorly edited and hard on the eyes........1999-09-18

This is a thoughtful book with lots of useful information on intuition. The problem is that the print is so tiny, and I, being over 50 y.o., get eye strain trying to read it without a magnifying lens. There are also many typos, misspellings, misplaced commas, incomplete sentences, wrong grammar, etc., that it reads more like an unedited first draft than a finished product. The material is worthwhile but I wish it could be presented in a less physically painful format. Clearly, the publisher did not "already know what to do" with this text. If it were more readable, I would have given it 4 or 5 stars.

This book has been among the few that has changed my life. It is forged in deep real life expierience. If I could recomend only one book to anyone in serious spiritual trouble, to my best friend or brother, it would be this one. It leads the way to other books and to real life practical expierience. It is not a theological discussion nor is it merely sentimental. It leads to a genuine spiritual awakening. This book, if sincerely read and applied can radically alter your life. If you feel that there is more to life than there seems to be, if you feel There must be more, you are right. 3 out of 5 stars Spiritual insights buried in blarney.......2000-01-24

This book really does have some insight into the spiritual life. Unfortunately, these genuine insights are buried in a mountain of blousy, folksy, self-indulgent verbiage. The book needs to be reduced by half. It tries the reader's patience to wade through such poor writing. For example: "But, occasionally the Self-Existent visits me in his marvelous and litte-appreciated quality of geburah: rigor, severity. And then it is brought home to my reluctant attention where Tom Powers really stands in these matters. And I see, quite apart from any monkey-play of pious inferiority or phony humility but very simply as the truth, that in the practice of prayer and love I am in subkindergarten." It's a shame that the style is so off-putting.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent manual on how to search for and find God........1999-07-17

The first edition of this book was published in 1959, under the title of FIRST QUESTIONS ON THE LIFE OF THE SPIRIT. It is a beautifully done, no- nonsense method for developing a relationship with God, for attaining a connection to God. It would be hard for me to recommend a book more highly than I do this one. If you have a burning need to get going on your spiritual journey and don't know how or where to look, try this book. I am a conservative Roman Catholic and I dig deeply into the wells of my religion, but this book really got me going back in the early 60's. The book uses many resources, Christian and Non-Christian, but I am constantly referring back to it as the years go by.

5 out of 5 stars Do you hunger for deeper prayer? Read this book........2007-08-28

This is one book I would recommend most highly to anyone who thinks about learning more about prayer and hungers for more. The subtitle, "The Way of Christian Contemplation" should not frighten anyone because it is not "new" nor is it just a "technique." Rather, it follows from the best tradition of the church, including John of the Cross, Theresa of Avila and others. Fr. Keating's writing is simple, clear, using examples we can all identify with. No one needs a theology degree for this, just a hunger to learn about deeper prayer. At 140 pages, Keating give a great introduction....and in fact lots more than just a start.

                5 out of 5 stars The "Way".......2007-05-30

Other than the Bible itself, no other writings available offer sincere seekers a more illumined path to our Creator where we may dwell in His Truth. I thank God for Thomas Keating!

5 out of 5 stars Invitation to Deeper Prayer.......2001-01-24

INVITATION TO LOVE is the third of Father Keating's books to deal with Christian Comtemplation, centering prayer and developing a deeper understanding of our relationship to God. This type of prayer, unlike more active forms, enables us to "rest in God's presence" and can help us in our journey toward God.

In this book, the author discusses the many false programs for happiness and levels of human consciousness, giving the reader a better understanding of how we seek God on our terms, rather than on His. Our obstacles to prayer are shown in the context of our psychological background and social upbringing, yet Father Keating does so in a clear, yet inspiring style.

As other reviewers have noted, the reader may get more out of this book by reading OPEN MINDS, OPEN HEARTS and THE MYSTERY OF CHRIST. I read both of those books and found that each built on the other. Together, they are an excellent resource.

4 out of 5 stars Gentle, solid introduction to contemplation.......2000-07-28

Father Keating displays a gift for imparting essential points of mystic theology (a beauty so ancient and so new ... could not resist adding that, because many of his references are Augustinian) in a manner so gentle that they seem simple reflections. (At this moment, I hope that my reference to "mystic theology" does not cause potential readers to click the back button.) Scriptural references abound, and are often haunting - so much so that the translations (his own?), which are rather excessively colloquial, do not make one wince. The author explains points clearly and well, and generally with an engaging charm. Very fine work.

5 out of 5 stars Keating to the rescue again!.......2000-04-29

Having been to a retreat led by Father Keating, I find a seamless connection between the man and his books. Invitation to Love follows his typical pattern of treating profound spiritual issues with simplicity of style and great respect for the connection between spiritual and psychological growth. The ostrich can't see with his head in the sand; neither can we "see" spiritually until we have wiped the sand from our eyes and looked at our psychological formation and its effects on us as adults. Keating explains this connection and provides ways to progress from an "I-centered" to a spiritually-centered way of life. Reading this book was a gift to myself!
