Book Description

Rick Husband wanted to be an astronaut since his fourth birthday, but it wasn't always for the right reasons. Initially, he thought it would be neat . . . cool . . . a fun thing to do. It wasn't until he came to a spiritual crossroads and was able to give that dream up to discover the true desires of his heart before he actually got into the space shuttle program at NASA. Three failed attempts didn't daunt this driven pilot-and the fourth interview process, though lengthy and difficult, proved successful for him.

Husband's years at NASA served not only to develop his integrity and character, but also to increase his faith in a Creator that could not be denied in the vastness of space. His story is not only inspirational but exhilarating and invigorating, as readers will witness the life of a man who consistently pursued the desires of his heart even as he served a faithful God.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you want to know aabout NASA.......2007-04-10

I was surprised how really good this book was. As well as telling you tons of fascinating info about NASA and lots of interesting detail about the work of the astronauts, the reader is given an intimate look into what their families are put through. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2006-05-22

The book High Calling is good. I recommend that if you enjoy real life novels you buy this book. It is about the astronaut Rick Husband and his wife Evelyn Husband. I liked it for that reason. Also, it gets to the point without too much detail but it has enough. It was also interesting how it told about all of the procedures that astronauts do and how their lives are. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes books about real people in real situations. Another good thing is that the book is spiritual and tells people who read it to become more spiritual.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-08-25

Very meaningful personal testimony to a most important event in our Nation's history.
Should be read by everyone.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Story and a Decent Book.......2005-07-30

Like Rick, I grew up in Amarillo Texas and attended Texas Tech University as an engineering major so his story was naturally interesting to me. Unfortunately, the book seemed to focus too much on his faith. I realize his faith was a large part of his life. Remember this is the life AND faith of Rick. Ultimately I was left with the impression that working on this book provided an avenue of closure for a mourning wife.

5 out of 5 stars An American hero.......2005-06-11

Astronaut Rick Husband was a true American hero in more than one way. From childhood, his dream was to be an astronaut, and he was willing to do whatever it took to fulfill his dream.
Rick Husband was also a devoted husband and father who took the time to record daily inspirational video messages for his children.
But, most of all, Husband was a devout Christian man who was dedicated to serving the Lord.
The Columbia tragedy happened only two years ago, so it is still easy for most of us to remember that terrible day. In this book, you can truly feel Evelyn Husband's pain and sorrow when she learned that she had lost Rick. Evelyn also remembers the other six astronauts who lost their lives that day.

5 out of 5 stars Actually quite good for a Chimera Book ...........2004-01-28

This is a wonderfull little story of a young woman wanting to escape from her world after the death of her husband in a tragic accident. Set in modern day Egypt, Evelyn manages to quickly tie herself up with a young photographer,Mark, that actually turns out to be a sexual and erotic enigma for her.

The reader quickly learns that maybe her dead husband and his younger brother are not all tender and sweetness as one may have though considering the mourning agony our heroine is trying to escape from. Young Mark manages to understand some of Evelyns hidden desires and he has no problem stepping into Richards shoes or his widow ....

This is not what I would call one of the hottest of erotica books since the sex scenes are somewhat short and subdued .... ther is however a wonderfull little story that keeps the reader interested as our heroine suffers her 'Eternal Bondage' from really one man to another ....

5 out of 5 stars Erotic BDSM excitement with a good story.......2003-03-27

An aspiring Egyptologist, Evelyn Taylor retreats to the sands by the Nile to heal and cleanse her spiritual self after the death of her husband. The ties of passion (and ties of leather) to her husband Richard are too strong for this world, and Evelyn deals with consuming emotions of her past love, and a new mysterious stranger who seems 'bound' and determined to take the place of her [now] not-so-stiff husband. Evelyn's all-consuming visions and mistrust sew easily into the mysterious fabric of Egypt and weave historical tales with hauntings by her lovers, then and now.

For anyone with even a passing interest in Egyptian history, the words and scenes in ETERNAL BONDAGE will delight. The descriptions of the ancient world set in modern times, laced with the graphic telling of the world of the submissive woman and the domineering man, give good counterpoint of different worlds merged.

Scene descriptions take the highest praise, the main character development comes in second... the erotic passages of violence within sexual play are done fairly well within the context of the story---the erotic writing itself borders on the crude, but the subject matter itself is by nature somewhat less than 'soft'. The bondage scenes are framed with the nature of Evelyn's passion, and then journey into the psychological realms for the reader to enjoy. The sex itself ties the intricate, keep-you-guessing plot together, and the reader is left with a mystery to solve between the spankings and tomb touring.

To the true S&M/bondage world enthusiast, this book will deliver erotic excitement with a story line... the title of the book is wonderful and ties together many possibilities of the words 'Eternal Bondage".

From a review written for SENSUAL ROMANCE

5 out of 5 stars An Absorbing Novel with Depth.......2002-11-14

Evelyn Taylor is still distraught one year after her husband's death in a car accident. Traveling the world, she goes to Egypt to lose herself in the ancient tombs. However, she begins to see visions of her deceased husband, and a photographer tries to help her to solve the mystery of her visions.

This quite nice erotic novel by the author of "Thorsday Night" is somewhat similar to her earlier work, except that this novel takes place in Egypt instead of Miami.

Mark O'Brien, an American Photographer working in Egypt, meets Evelyn in a hotel. After dining together, he seduces her, and discovers that she is used to mild D/s. She then begins to see visions of her husband Richard, and the story deepens from there.

I don't want to give too much away, but I will say that this is an absorbing novel with some depth to it. The author has done her homework about ancient Egyptian history and the Valley of the Kings, so this isn't a simplistic story at all.

Plenty of good sex and discipline scenes to keep the story moving, as Evelyn finds herself used by many other of the male characters in the novel. A must read, if you like the supernatural sex type Erotica...

      Book Description

The critique of white male society that Charles W. Chesnutt (1858-1932) launched in "A Marrow of Tradition" continues in Evelyn's Husband, one of six manuscripts left unpublished when this highly regarded African American innovator died.

Set in Boston society, on a deserted Carribean island, and in Brazil, Evelyn's Husband is the story of two men, one old, one young, in love with the same young woman. Late in his career Chesnutt embarked on a period of experimentation with eccentric forms, finishing this hybrid of a romance and adventure story just before publishing his last work, "The Colonel's Dream."

In "Evelyn's Husband," Chesnutt crafts a parody examining white male roles in the early 1900s, a time when there was rampant anxiety over the subject. In Boston, the older man is left at the altar when his bride-to-be flees and marries a young architect. Later, trapped on an island together, the jilted lover and the young husband find a productive middle ground between the dilettante and the primitive. The older man recovers his pride and the younger eventually learns to curb his emotions.

Along with "A Business Career," this novel marks Chesnutt's achievement in being among the first African American authors to defy the color barrier and write fiction with a white cast of main characters.

                  Book Description

In the Morland Dynasty series, the majestic sweep of English history is richly and movingly portrayed through the fictional lives of the Morland family. It is 1630, and when civil war destroys the long years of peace in England, the clash between King and Parliament is echoed at Morland Place. Richard, the heir, brings home a Puritan bride, while his dashing brother Kit joins the Royalist cavalry under prince Rupert, leaving their father, Edmund, desperately trying to steer a middle course. As the war grinds on, bitterness replaces early fervor and divisions grow deeper, and through it all Edmund struggles grimly to protect his inheritance and keep Morland Place intact.

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Morlands brave civil war.......2006-06-08

In the fourth installment of the Morland dynasty books, the family are confronted with civil war, as king and parliament fight for control of England in the 1640s.
The civil war divides the family - Roundhead against Cavalier, Puritan against Catholic/Anglican. The family members are torn between family loyalty and individual conscience. As with previous books, the fortunes of the characters are well blended with actual historical people and events. The Morland heir Richard marries a Puritan, while his brother Kit fights for King Charles I and gives up his life at the battle of Marsden. Their cousins are sent to Virginia to claim land for the Morlands, and become American pioneers.

There is a large time gap between this book and the previous one "The Princeling". Characters that had just been born in the last few pages of book 3, are now middle aged adults with children of their own. It took some time to connect the current family members with those in the last book, but the family tree at the front was helpful.

This book also had more to offer than it's predecessor in terms of characters too. It wasn't just a series of births, death and marriages. The characters were individuals and tied to real events, something that was lacking in "The Princeling". In particular, the reclusive and mysterious cousin Ruth was a nice change to the line up. The Morlands have once again found their place at the forefront English historical fiction.

                  5 out of 5 stars Unputdownable.......2001-06-22

Following "The Founding", "The Dark Rose" and "The Princeling", this is the fourth book in the MORLAND DYNASTY series.

After many years of peace and prosperity, the reign of Charles I brings brutal civil strife to England.

With their century-long history of fighting for what they consider a just cause, the Morland family is drawn inevitably into the bloody fighting. While the oldest son Ralph brings home a Puritan wife, thus creating a schism between himself and his father, his younger brother Kit joins the Royalist cavalry under Prince Rupert. Before leaving for the war, Kit marries his cousin Hero, thus making a lifelong enemy of Hero's brother Hamil. When the two cousins meet during the war, albeit fighting on the same side, the death of one seems inevitable.

There are so many more stories in the book concerning the various branches of the Morlands that it is impossible to go into more detail. For the first time, the author includes Colonial America in the story, telling of the desperate struggle of a young couple to survive in a harsh New World.

The characters are believable and the stories, which have been well researched, are full of rich historical detail. I simply could not stop reading until I reached the last page and then I rushed on to the next book. I have read the first six books in the series and have not yet been disappointed.

The bleak wilderness of America's 49th state challenges three women in different eras: Julie, a nurse, who must serve victims of a 1925 diphtheria epidemic; Beth, whose Canadian-born husband is killed in World War II; and Rita, who takes on the ultimate test of endurance, the Iditarod dog sled race. Each must surmount the obstacles of her life, and perhaps, with God's help, find true love as well. As a special bonus, 'Alaska' also includes Tracie Peterson's novella 'Christmas Dream.'

I picked this book up because I'm going to Alaska and wanted to get myself excited for the trip; unfortunately, this book really didn't help much. Although it did get into the Iditarod, dog sledding, and blizzards, it really did not cover the culture of living in Alaska like I thought it would--and let's not even talk about the characters. As a Christian woman, some parts of the book (such as Rita Eriksson's fight to be independent of God) were definitely realistic; however, in the end it seemed as if every single character, even the less important ones, were model Christian citizens, and because of that these stories lost much of their [realistic] appeal.

I found this collection of novelas to be magnificent. I didn't want to put it down. At one point I acutally cried. The characters become so real to you that you are moved with their pain and elated in their victories. I also found them spiritually uplifting. Now I just wish I could go see the places that were so wonderfully discribed.

I do not read alot but I could not put this book down. I live in Alaska and have been in the same place as the charcter in the book. I liked the spiritual content too. Differently better than the trashy love novels you can buy.

5 out of 5 stars IDENTIFY WITH THE CHARACTERS.......2000-03-14

I liked the second story the best, because it really made me ask myself "What would I have done if I were in her situation? Would I have put God first? Would I have denied myself a strong opportunity like that because God said NO?" But I liked all four of them. They were realistic romance but not mushy or improper. A MUST-READ...YOU WON'T FORGET THIS BOOK AND (HOPEFULLY) THE LESSONS YOU LEARNED THROUGH PRACTICAL EXAMPLES OF SUBMISSION TO GOD.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......1999-12-02

This book seems to have all the love that the author has known in her heart. ..I really liked it and it made me think of my own life and loves. If you want to read a book that goes straight to your heart, read Stolen Moments by Barbara Jeanne Fisher. . .It is a beautiful story of unrequited love. . .for certain the love story of the nineties. I intended to give the book a quick read, but I got so caught up in the story that I couldn't put the book down. From the very beginning, I was fully caught up in the heart-wrenching account of Julie Hunter's battle with lupus and her growing love for Don Lipton. This love, in the face of Julie's impending death, makes for a story that covers the range of human emotions. The touches of humor are great, too, they add some nice contrast and lighten things a bit when emotions are running high. I've never read a book more deserving of being published. It has rare depth. Julie's story will remind your readers that life and love are precious and not to be taken for granted. It has had an impact on me, and for that I'm grateful. Stolen Moments is written with so much sensitivity that it made me want to cry. It is a spellbinder. What terrific writing. Barbara does have an exceptional gift! This book was edited by Lupus specialist Dr. Matt Morrow too, and has the latest information on that disease. ..A perfect gift for someone who started college late in life, fell in love too late in life, is living with any illness, or trying to understand a loved one who is. . .A gift to be cherished forever.

We're reminded that before the foundation of the world, God knew us and that He had a plan for us. Connecting with one's destiny is not deciding it, but discovering it. On the matter of hearing from God, he uses Psalm 37:4, "Delight yourself in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart." He says two things are found in this Scripture, 1) as I delight in the Lord He places desires within me and 2) He gives me the things desired.

On thinking the right thoughts, he notes, "...your life in many ways is a manifestation of what you think about yourself." His gift of communicating is found throughout the book. I like what he says about blessing, i.e., "I am a blessing going somewhere to happen."

Toward the end of the book he returns to the topic of desires. He teaches that God given desires are provided as a means of directing one in God's paths for the individual. Faith in God is absolutely necessary to fulfilling one's destiny. Focusing on God and His Word, rather than circumstances produces the results desired. The powerful, Scriptural teaching in this book will get you charged up to do, be, and achieve to the maximum! To God be the glory!

Pastor Casey does an excellent job of detailing a subject that stumps the best scholars. He handles the subject of "destiny" in a way that is very simple to understand. This book is life changing. This book should be mandatory reading for every high school freshman. (Some should read it before they get to high school.) Knowing and using these concepts can save people years of "searching, hoping and praying" for the right job to come along. It can save parents tution money. Students and parents can learn to identify gifts and callings which can save countless hours of aggravation over the wrong school, wrong major, etc. Grasping and applying the concepts in this book can literally change your life. As I have applied and started to teach these concepts to others, it's as if the "light bulb" has gone on for so many people. I would highly recommend this book and will continue to use it in ministry.

Here, for the first time, is a book documenting the music inspired by the works of this literary genius, with insights provided by the artists. The book features a foreword by H. P. Lovecraft expert S. T. Joshi and cover artwork by Joseph Vargo.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for Lovecraft or music lovers alike.......2006-10-28

The Strange Sound of Cthulhu starts with an introduction to Lovecraft's life. This provides good background for readers who are there for the musical aspect and unfamiliar with his writing. It is strait-forward, giving just the information needed to understand how he could still have an impact on music today, almost seventy years after his death.

The rest of the book is broken down into the musical genres he inspired. From psychedelic rock to country, groups little heard of all the way to big names, such as Black Sabbath and Metallica, have attributed some of their inspiration to Lovecraft.

Hill analyzes the songs--and even group names--that have roots in the literature of Lovecraft. The book compares lyrics with Lovecraft prose, and touches on music rumored to have Lovecraft ties. He gives details of each song, and in many cases, interviews with the artists behind the music. They discuss how their music ties in with Lovecraft, how they were introduced to his writing, and even their favorite Lovecraft tale.

Though the idea of seeing the music described in words may sound dull to some, Joshi was correct in the forward when he said, "Gary has that rarest of skills among music critics: the ability to describe a song, whether vocal or instrumental, in such a way that readers seem to hear it running through their heads."

Though Hill claims that the book is in no way exhaustive on the subject, it is as close to being exhaustive as it can get. It is designed to snare the readers that are there for the music to start reading Lovecraft, and the readers there for Lovecraft to look out for the music. I found myself getting out my old music to listen for what Hill describes.

This story makes you think if the dreams you really want are really worth everything you have to lose. After reading this story the book became a book that I could recommend to anybody. The story is interesting because it takes three different stories and puts them into one. The choices the main character makes are poor choices. Because of these poor choices the story becomes predictable, but not to the point of where you want to stop reading it. However I didn't stop reading it and it is a fantastic book.

"Roads of Destiny" written by O Henry creates a different way of looking at the paths in life we take. His theory reveals that it doesn't matter the paths we take but our destiny is sealed. Whatever we do does not change or hinder it. Through reading O Henry's thoughts, one must acknowledge how we should make the most of what we want for our lives-self goals/accomplishments- because we only have one life to live and death may come sooner than one might think. Who wants to die an unhappy death knowing that your life was useless and you didn't achieve your goals?

If you've ever regretted making a choice thinking that you're life would have been different, then this is the story for you! O Henry's unique style of writing will introduce you to story filled of mystery, suspense and of course a decision. A decision which will lead a certain main character to three roads of which he must choose from.
                                      Three Roads.
                                      Three ways.
                                      Three outcomes.
Now what's alluring about this story is that all three outcomes are shared. And curiously enough they end up having crazy, yet shocking endings. This book will definitely make you think twice about all the decisions you've made in the past. We may think the decisions me make will make a huge difference in our future, yet this story adds a certain twist to the phrase "life changing decisions". What if those "life changing decisions" we make are worth nothing, because ultimately we all have the same outcome? Would that change the way you make your decisions from now on? These are some questions that left me speechless with doubt. I loved the way this book made me think. It was wonderful! O Henry's morbid style of writing and wry outcomes will insure you and definite good read!

4 out of 5 stars Roads of Life.......2006-01-12

This story makes the reader think: Would a person truly change if they chose to go a different route in their life? There are three roads: left, right, center. Each road is leading a different way. O Henry believes that even we may take different paths in our life time, the outcome never really changes. I enjoyed the thinking process, but I did not really enjoy the story itself. I felt that it was a little on the depressing side. The outcomes of the different roads in "Roads to Destiny" are a little disappointing. In every outcome, he is a sad and unhappy poet. The writing was distinctly O Henry's work. I believe it will enrich a person's soul. It makes a person look at their life and see what is important to them. This story is worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Roads of Destiny.......2006-01-12

Imagine if everyday you had one destiny and that no matter where you went or what you did you would end up in the same place. Which path would you travel? O Henry gracefully teaches that choices cannot change destiny. This suggests that everyone has an ultimate destiny that would come true, against all odds. I do not believe that this is possible, or realistic. Perhaps there is more that a person can do to change what can happen in the future? Is there a higher power involved somehow? Is it possible that there truly is a plan for our lives? The plot is rich capturing the reader's attention, because you never know what will happen to David as he travels down the next road. A definite must read for anyone.

Now the settlements are falling into decay, and the old technology is breaking down. Spiraltown is better off than most, and Jeremy Bloocher is lucky that he will someday head the family farm there. But there is trouble, Jeremy must flee, and neither he nor Destiny will ever be the same.

Wide and smooth, the Road was seared into planet Destiny's rocky surface by the fusion drive of the powered landing craft, Cavorite. The Cavorite deserted the original interstellar colonists, stranding them without hope of contacting Earth. Now, descendants of those pioneers have many questions about the Road, but no settler who has gone down it has ever returned. For Jemmy Bloocher, a young farm boy, the questions burn too hot--and he sets out to uncover the many mysteries of Destiny's Road.

2 out of 5 stars Road to Nowhere.......2007-09-22

The book takes one interesting idea (an alien planet that cannot be explored because technology is low and the native life forms inedible to travellers) and makes a mess of it. Two-thirds of the way through, he gets so bogged down in a boring plot that he simply jumps twenty years, giving the main character a wife and family that we know absolutely nothing about, and any attempt for the reader to empathize with the protagonist is gone or taken an interest in the story-line is gone. Whatever happened to the imagination that created Ringworld?

Having read alot of Niven, his Ringworld series, he crashlander stories, the ARM stories, and others, I gotta say this book feels nothing like Niven. Most of his books have really good plots and characters, and more importantly stuff other than massive amounts of sex happens. It seemed reading this book that Niven wanted to try his hand at making a sci-fi romance novel. Instead it feels like an outline for a bad porn movie.

                                      1 out of 5 stars Slow - Plodding - Disjointed.......2007-09-18

This book was a big disappointment. I have been a Niven fan for some years and found this book to be among his worst works. He states at the beginning of the book that his draft for this book was 4 years over due, and I can't help but wonder if he needed to "get this to the publisher quick" because of an advance. The plot starts off rather well but quickly becomes rather pointless and disjointed. Although the story takes place in the future and on an Earth colonized world... This book is far from traditional "Sci-Fi" of any sort.

As other (most) reviewers have stated... this book was a waste of money and a waste of time.

2 out of 5 stars A Road with no Destiny.......2007-08-06

Though I haven't even come close to reading all of Niven's books, I think that I can easily surmise that this is by far his worst effort. It pains me to do this, but I have to be honest.

I'm actually glad that I came on here and read some of the other reviews. Now I actually have an idea of what this book was about. Like many others have stated, this book seems completely devoid of any semblance of a plot. It starts out, interestingly enough, on the distant human colonized planet of Destiny. We follow the life of young Jemmy Bloocher who, after murdering someone in a belligerent dispute, is ostracized from Spiraltown.

Following this occurrence, Jemmy starts an adventure along a road that was carved by the fushion-drives of the colonizing space-ship. At this point, the entire story just falls into shreds. We are supposedly going through an entirely alien world, but sadly one that Niven mistakenly left all the detail out of. Also, I beg the question, "what is the actual purpose of this story?" Our protagonist meanders from one settlement to another, conversing, copulating, fighting, and doing an assortment of other meaningless activities that feed nothing to the plot.

We are told that on this planet, potassium is in short supply (not found in any of the natural food supplies) and must be consumed in the form of "Speckles." I found this interesting; original at least. But the Speckles aspect never does enough to get the story going.

I gave this effort two stars for the simple originality of the story itself. I picked this book up after reading the synopsis on the back. Unfortunately, I really think this novel would have been excellent had Jemmy been the narrator instead of just being written in the third person. I, for one, appreciate it when a sci-fi author can escape from the gigantic Space Battle aspect and go for something a little more heady. Sadly, I don't think Niven was on board for this one. Or I could have just completely misinterpreted what he intended.

                                      1 out of 5 stars Dull.......2007-01-04

I recommend that you not waste your time. I have found that the quality of Niven's writing has diminished greatly in recent years. The ideas for this book should have been turned over to Robert Silverberg. He would have made an entertaining story out of.

                                                Book Description

What difference does scholarship on the historical Jesus make for the way we think about the meaning of Christian faith in the twenty-first century? In The Historical Jesus Goes To Church, biblical scholars - Fellows of the Jesus Seminar - speak directly to the ways in which new knowledge of the Jesus of history requires and enable us to think differently about the significance of Jesus and about the reliability and authority of the Bible. They also imagine what these new understandings imply for public worship, preaching, prayer and practice, and life in community. These articles evoke the spirit of Paul, Christianity's first theologian, who like us found himself standing at the intersection of two eras and knew that he had to let go of his past if he hoped to have a future.
