Book Description

She’s one of America’s fairest and funniest ladies. Actress and screenwriter, director and comedienne, Fannie Flagg is also a most accomplished and high-spirited author. Said Kirkus of her first book, Coming Attractions: “It’s subtitled ‘A wonderful novel’ and that’s exactly what it is.” Here is her second. Get ready, because it’s going to make you laugh (a lot), cry (a little), and care (forever).

What is it? It’s first the story of two women in the 1980s, of gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode telling her life story to Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age. The tale she tells is also of two women—of the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Ruth—who back in the thirties ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama, a Southern kind of Cafe Wobegon offering good barbecue and good coffee and all kinds of love and laughter, even an occasional murder.

And as the past unfolds, the present—for Evelyn and for us—will never quite be the same.

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is folksy and fresh, endearing and affecting, with humor and drama—and with an ending that would fill with smiling tears the Whistle Stop Lake...if they only had a lake....

I love the movie version. Watch it about once a year. The book fleshes out the beloved characters very well. The book is a keepsake to be re-read often.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure.......2007-07-26

First off, the title is one of the best ever; and everything about this book lives up to it. Not a story that is reeled out in a straight cast but payed out slowly- under and over stories artfully woven. The character's names, the place, the times, the sounds of the train, the smells of all that fabulous pre-health conscious stuff frying on the grill. Boy oh boy!
The hope of life against the odds. This is one classic book.

4 out of 5 stars I quite liked it!.......2007-07-18

Whenever I see a movie that was originally a book, I always want to read the book. Then i got on amazon and saw how many people were just lovin the book! So i got. And here I am, to make my own rave review.
Although the book jumps around alot, somehow I never got confused or annoyed. It just still fit seamlessly together, ninny telling her story and the rest being filled in. And then it tells the story of Evelyn, who's struggling with depression and her want to die. And then it goes through with her as she suddenly becomes angry, calling herself Towanda.
I'd say that it's definately worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the movie!.......2007-07-09

Read the book, it's better than the movie and you will be glad you did.

I loved it. I watched the movie first and now am reading the book and it's just fantastic!

Now back in print -- Maritta Wolff's 1941 masterpiece about small-town Midwestern life in post-Depression America

Whistle Stop, published to rave reviews and astonishing commercial success, is the story of the Veech family, an oversize, poverty-stricken tribe trying to make good in a cruel world. Through the course of a punishingly hot summer, we experience life with the six children and three adult Veeches as they bicker, brawl, make up, and provide titillating morsels of scandal for the neighborhood. A work of darkly comic grotesque, replete with shades of Flannery O'Connor, Whistle Stop is also a wrenching and earnest rumination on the tragedy of thwarted love.

5 out of 5 stars This book will stop your heart.......2004-01-31

I discovered a lovingly-preserved copy of Whistle Stop in the basement sale of the Boonton Public Library in Boonton, NJ, and frankly, my life has never been the same since. Maritta Wolff wrote this, her masterwork, in college, and it emerged from her pen almost utterly flawless, written with an artless candor perhaps only possible at her unaffected age.

It's the story of a down-at-the heels family in a sleepy farm town in Michigan, and how they endure fate, and how they tempt it. Some are in pain, some are violent, some are ambitious, or selfish, and some have given up. Descriptively, you smell the sun-baked overgrown grass, you hear the creak of dilapidated floorboards, you hear and feel each taunt and jeer, and you feel their love and hate as if it is your own. Everyone is flawed and desperate, but everyone is alive in a way people don't seem to be anymore.

After you invite these characters into your home, they won't ever move out, which is for the best, because each one is a touchstone to a facet of your soul.

Rather than taking the place of reading the novel, this supplement offers lots of help with putting its themes into focus. The character reviews are helpful, but the best part may be Angeline Godwin Dvorak's essay on how food functions in the novel as nurturing in Southern culture. The historical commentaries are also helpful.

This novel is so amazing. I have passed it on to family and friends ever since I have read it because I want everyone to read it! This novel holds everything you can search for in a story- adventure, romance, humor, tragedy, everything! I don't know how Fannie Flagg did it, but I believe she created the epiphany of the greatest book ever written.

        Book Description

The Crossroads Series explores previously undescribed areas of the Dragonlance world. Dragonlance fans eagerly await detailed information on any area of their favorite fantasy world.

The port town of Flotsam has always been left to handle its own problems, neither asking for nor wanting help from the rest of Krynn. That is, until the young mage Ulin Majere and his traveling companion are summoned there to identify a murder victim. They quickly discover there is more to the rough seaport than just one dead body, including cagey thieves, failing magic, the Knights of Neraka, and a very greedy, very deadly red dragon.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Flotsam, a wrenched hive of scum and villainy.......2003-01-02

An extremely well written novel by Mary H. Herbert, as always with her dragonlance novels, "Dragon's Bluff" is solid. This time she expands on her forays into the Majere family and Ulin Majere, son of Palin, comes into the spotlight. While not as interesting as his sister Linsha was in "Clandestine Circle", he provides a strong draw for anyone that enjoys the Majere family.

This novel includes just about everything a good DL novel needs. It has mages, thieves, dragons, gnome and kender sidekicks. It even has the cool theme of the story revolving around a card game called Dragon's Bluff. But it just kind of lacked that killer instinct that could have turned it into a truly great novel. Instead, while well written, the plot never really gives you the action you assume you should get. And the ending lacks that large bang you want during the end of a DL novel.

While it was realistic, had a well driven plot, developed characters, and even had the all important dragon as a villain, it just lacked a little "umph". Can't say I didn't like it, but sadly can't rave about it either.

Final Thought: Anyone up for a game of Dragon's Bluff?

        3 out of 5 stars a boring series.......2002-10-27

While the characters were vastly more entertaining than the ones in the previous book & the writer not quite so long-winded, this book was still rather bland & as boring as the rest of the series.

With about 80 novels in the DL series, it's a good thing that not all of them are worth reading a 2nd time(or 1st for that matter)but it still drives me crazy when they so obviously give some of these books a half-hearted attempt.

4 out of 5 stars not bad at all.......2002-03-31

This book was good. I enjoyed the characters and the setting but nothing was great. The plot was good, well everything was good but not great. I would say it is worth buying if you have nothing else you currently want to read. I was not dissapointed or impressed. Buy it if you feel like it.

        5 out of 5 stars good.......2001-11-11

have to give it five. excellent book. very interesting. no cliche, no b.s., wasn't unrealistic either. actually looking forward to reading more of her books in the future, that is if she writes any (i assume she will).

        4 out of 5 stars It Takes a Thief..........2001-08-04

It's been a long time since I've read a DragonLance novel. Probably as the result of overdosing on Weis and Hickman's books. Recently I felt a yen to revisit the world of dragons and kenders and picked up Mary Herbert's "Dragon's Bluff." I'm not sure why I decided to read the third book in a new series, but it turns out to have been a fortuitous choice.

This story starts out with Ulin Majere and his betrothed, Lucy, living in Solace after the destruction of the Academy of Sorcery. With magic failing both are making the transition to mundane lives. Suddenly, their routines are upset when a dwarf appears from far away Flotsam and asks Lucy to journey to that town to identify a corpse - one suspected to be the body of her father, Kethril Torkay. Lucy hasn't seen her father in 10 years and, wants to resolve her ambivalent feelings about the man who deserted her and her mother. She also feels a need to prove herself to Ulin, who is a descendant of the famous Majeres. When the dwarf offers 25% of her father's estate, the temptation proves to great and Lucy and Ulin set off on a hair-raising journey by boat and caravan.

Once arrived in Flotsam, Lucy finds that she hadn't quite been presented with all the facts. The corpse is not Kethril, and it turns out that his 'estate' consists of the stolen treasury of Flotsam. That treasury is desperately needed to pay the town's taxes to the fierce red dragon Fyremantle and his horrific mistress Malystryx. Far from being able to pay Lucy, Flotsam is on the verge of destruction and desperately needs help. On the strength of having magically converted several potatoes into firebombs and thus saving a caravan Lucy is offered the job of sheriff. Lucy and Challis the dwarf attempt to organize the town while Ulin, with the help of Notwen the gnome attempt to track down her errant father and Flotsam's missing taxes. Of course, nothing ever works quite according to plan and the fate of Flotsam is not decided until the last minute.

"Dragon's Bluff" turns out to be a charming story full of suspense and surprises. I am used to heavier fare from the DragonLance series and found myself being happily entertained by the many plot twists and the fascinating residents of one of Krynn's more obscure locations. This is by and large an upbeat story, despite being set in a land ruled by vicious and destructive dragons. It is a grim place to be, but the denizen's of Flotsam are determined to survive. Mary Herbert writes for pure entertainment and there is much to enjoy here. The novels in the Crossroads series are intended to be independent tales, and this tale stands well on it's own, although some understanding of the world of Krynn would be to the reader's advantage.

Just so you know, if you're buying this book to use in a d20 city campaign, you might as well save your money.

First, there's absolutely no statistics for any NPCs save their race, class, and level (ooh, thanks for all the help!).

Second, there's not hooks, twists, story lines, miniadventures or anything! What the . . . what player wants to sit and listen to a 3-page history of Foreign District?!

Where's the building maps?! Don't expect any here!

One good thing, though, it did have a nice walkthrough of the entire city included on the large, full-color map that comes with it.

To summarize, do NOT get this book thinking you're getting something that you can simply piece together with your own ideas. In order to make a worthwhile campaign, you're going to have to devote a lot of time and energy to maps, NPCs, and twists that, in my opinion, should have been included in an accessory such as this.

If you have time to do this, that's great! If you're studying for the Bar Exam in July like I am and don't have 5 hours a day to devote to making a decent adventure, don't get it!

At last - the authoritative text on the irresistibly alluring City of Ravens Bluff! Drawing on the famous LC modules, and the best creative writings of the players and DMs who have participated in the RPGA over the past decade, Ed Greenwood creates an unbelievably detailed and fascinating look at the best-developed city in the Forgotten Realms. Even Waterdeep pales in the shadow of this intricate work! This huge compendium is 160 pages, in microscopic print - you'll literally need a magnifier if you plan on reading much of this in one sitting. In the back is a glorious full-color poster, unveiling an entire world of adventure. If you've been looking for an exciting new setting from which to base your next adventuring campaign, look no further - this city is as detailed and fascinating as Greyhawk itself, which makes it one of the best urban settings of all time, for any game!

        4 out of 5 stars Raven's Bluff - Splendid AD&D Setting!.......2000-02-16

Okay, so I actually like a recent TSR publication, and why not? It is a well written tome filled with skads of detail of a place that has until recently been the purview of the RPGA. Greenwood does an excellent job in detailing the city-and most importantly, the families of note complete with histories! Wow! Best of all, it isn't overly replete with characters who made pacts with every god and major demon lord to get where they are. Aside from Greenwood's obsession with mages and the fact that there are just too darn many of them to be found anywhere in the Realms, Raven's Bluff is an ideal book to base a series of adventures, but I wouldn't run a campaign in it. It could have done with a better thieves guild, but other than that, this is well written book, and it's layout and maps are extremely well done. Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant roleplaying opportunities.......2002-09-01

Just got hold of this in pdf format. It's an excellent introductory-level adventure for levels 1-3. The scenario is that the PC's are roped in to work as probationary nightwatch in Raven's Bluff. They have to keep the peace for the night and make sure no-one is killed and no crimes are committed. Full of brilliant role-playing opportunities, this is definitely one for the thinking group.

The game is split up into a number of keyed scenarios that can link up to others later on. There are some hilarious NPCs to meet including an old vampire-slayer, a deranged druid who lives in the sewer with rats and a crazed fisherman trying to dice up his neighbour into burley.

There are not a lot of opportunities to hack & slash on the PC's part but it is a really nice alternative to most of the introductory modules out there. Look for it on the net or pick up an old hardcopy somewhere. Highly recommended.

New from FASA--a fiction series based on its most popular board game! CRIMSON SKY FICTION These novels, based on the exciting Microsoft computer game (scheduled for release in the third quarter of 2000) and FASA's popular board game, introduce the world of Crimson Skies. In the 1930s--of an alternative-history America--air militias from fragmented nation-states fight to protect themselves from pirates and other raiders. In this America, the planes are faster, the guns are bigger, and life is more exciting. The first series follows the transformation of Trevor "Rogue" Rheese from law-abiding security agent to pirate with a heart of gold.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, but no follow up books.......2007-05-07

I played the computer game that these novels were partly based off, and I loved the world in which the game and book take place. I read it pretty fast, and although the end of this book has a section from the second, there was never a second book made in the series, this is the only downfall, otherwise the book is great.

5 out of 5 stars Mack Maloney's "Wingman" series in the 1930s.......2000-12-16

Admittedly it requires familiarity with the board game series it's based on to make total sense--especially with all the airplanes mentioned in it--but it's a thoroughly enjoyable tale of dogfighting, greed, and vengeance over the skies of an alternate 1937 Seattle. The setting is evocative of Mack Maloney's "Wingman" series, but more from the point of view of the people who prefer and enjoy the balkanization of the USA rather than the people who want to restore it.

          Book Description

Joan Borysenko, Ph.D. (bestselling author of Minding the Body, Mending the Mind) has led thousands of women in spiritual retreats over the past fifteen years, helping them understand the unique path of a woman's spiritual journey. What started out as a few women getting together has become integral to Dr. Borysenko's career as an international teacher and speaker. On A Woman's Spiritual Retreat, she brings along her years of research as a cellular biologist and clinical psychologist to examine the difference between a woman's spiritual needs and a man's, and gives women ways to create their own feminine spiritual practices in a bold step toward a "universal spirituality" that honors the feminine in both men and women.

Listeners will join Dr. Borysenko in a full retreat they can experience anywhere, where they explore:

          · The importance of mindfulness in a woman¹s life
          · Maiden, Mother, Guardian, and Crone: discovering the source of power in each stage of being a woman
          · More than eight hours of meditations, rituals, and guided imagery to honor women¹s own spiritual paths, and much more.

5 out of 5 stars For Women Only: Take Some Time To Retreat and Learn.......2006-01-10

I am so glad that I heard of Joan Borysenko, PH.D. Ms. Borysenko is a well renowned cell biologist and psychologist from Harvard Medical School. She is a pioneer in the mind-body alternative medicine field. This CD collection "A Woman's Spiritual Retreat" is very informative. It is the first introduction I had towards the concepts of the feminine life cycle as a guide towards understanding women's passages and development stages. She borrows the imagery of the Triple Goddess (maiden, mother, and crone)and connects it to a woman's blood mystery to illustrate women's life processes. This information was instrumental in changing my view of womanhood.

I truly enjoyed her discussion on designing sacred space, creating rituals, and using the expressive arts (journalling, poetry, etc.) as a pathway towards healing and wholeness. And she also discusses several women's stories that demonstrate what women go through - the myth of Inanna, Adam/Eve/Lilith, and Sarah's Circle.

The myth of Inanna is the story of a woman's initiation and descent to the Goddess. This is the typical experience of women - the dark night of the soul. It's when a woman has been stripped of all her outward image, stands naked and accussed, then gets nailed to a peg on the wall. The story demonstrates that when a woman comes up out of the dark night, she isn't all sweetness and light. Something has happened that changed her. Certain things must change in her life and that includes "cutting away the deadwood". She's not nice anymore but she understands something that is really deep.

The Adam/Eve/Lilith story is the myth of women's struggle to be themselves and to be treated as human beings capable of making a choice. This demonstrates a different view that women can refuse to submit to men's desires or their outdated attitudes of what a woman should be.

And, Sarah's Circle reminds women of the synchronicities in our lives and that we often see patterns in certain life events. Men are the ones that have to climb the "ladder", the linear path of more and more. But, women - by virtue of our blood mysteries are accustomed to understanding the birth, death, and rebirth "cycle" as represented by the Triple Goddess and the moon. Endings are just as natural and necessary as a new beginning.

These stories and information is relevant for women of all stages in life and in all cultures. I say this because, every woman will have to come to terms one day with aging - and the greatest lesson here is that it just gets better for women. The older women, especially those 40+ are getting ready to go through the most powerful transformation of their lives. Borysenko breaks it down in the "retreat" when she discusses that as women move towards menopause they get that "extra" something that turns them into powerful and confident women. Take a good look at the women (especially the older women) who know themselves and you will see a "fierce, confident, and knowing" look on their faces. Borysenko can tell you why.

          5 out of 5 stars A Woman's Spiritual Retreat (CD).......2004-08-13

This is a wonderful collection of information to incorporate in your everyday life and to develop your spirtuality and higher self. Developing your intuition and creating your own rituals are some of the topics that are discussed. There is a meditation for each topic. This is an excellent cd set.
