5 out of 5 stars Love all of Nora's romance books.......2007-02-25

You can never go wrong with a Nora Roberts romance novel and this is just one more great one in the list.

3 out of 5 stars beware small type.......2007-01-15

i haven't finished reading even the first of these three books, but I am struggling to read the small, serifed type. I don't usually have any problems reading normal type, but something about the font and size of the type, combined with the large book is making this read a bit of a struggle for me.

So far, really like the characters and very typical Nora Roberts writing.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Reads.......2007-01-14

If you are an avid reader as I aa and a Nora Roberts fan too, you can't beat these three great books combined in one volume.
I am certain that you will enjoy these three earlier works by Nora Roberts.

Truly a great grouping of three story lines. Each one kept me on the edge of my seat and reluctant to put down until I completed it. Descriptions of location and events put you right there. I can't wait to read more of this author.

I loved this book. I read it quickly because Brendon was such a real character. You see his thoughts on girls but also the emotional side of losing a parent. Great book! I really felt like I know all of the characters.

"They say that some people are born great," Lauren Fontaine, the protagonist of Faulk's debut novel, says by way of introduction, "some people achieve greatness, and some people have greatness thrust upon them. I am clearly in the third category, and at this point I'd like to thrust it right back."

Lauren, a managing partner at an Atlanta investment firm, is hitting her late thirties and beginning to despair of ever finding another man to love. Although she is uncomfortable around other women, she considers herself an avowed feminist and is appalled when the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is absolved of any responsibility in the suicide of the wife he had been beating brutally. On the same day that she decides to travel to Washington to join hundreds of thousands of women in protest, she hears the story of Lysistrata, Aristophanes's earthy satire, in which the women of Greece end a war between Athens and Sparta by withholding sex. And thus a plot is set in motion.

But all good plots require complications, and therefore Lauren decides on a life of celibacy just as she meets Jake Ward, the handsome Pulitzer-winning writer she's had a crush on for years. The story plays itself out at a leisurely pace, with frequent anecdotal digressions, but always with a certain simple charm and earnestness.

Book Description

In the smartest, funniest, and sharpest novel since Erica Jong's Fear of Flying, the women of America are mad as hell -- and they're not going to DO IT anymore!

What would happen if a bold, successful female executive called upon the nation's women to withhold sex until a highly placed spousal abuser was brought to justice? It would rock the country -- and her life -- that's what! Holding Out is so fresh, so funny, and so controversial, it's sure to cause a major stir.

Lauren Fontaine is a thirty-six-year-old financial executive and single mother with a wicked wit and a tenacious sense of right and wrong. Like many, she is outraged when the wife of the chief justice of the Supreme Court commits suicide after years of spousal abuse -- and the "good old boys" in Congress refuse to impeach the offender. Lauren suggests that every woman in America refuse to have sex until the judge is removed from the bench. But when her proposed sex strike becomes the rage of the nation, Lauren finds herself pitted against every man in the country -- and placed unwittingly at the center of the most controversial "happening" in the history of the women's movement.

Through it all, Lauren must come to terms with her own burgeoning (and presently sexless) relationship with a handsome writer, as well as her changing assumptions about women -- all without losing her sense of humor. Combining a sexy, modern heroine with an imaginative and surprisingly poignant plot, this delicious must-listen marks the debut of one of fiction's most sophisticated new talents.

3 out of 5 stars Good intentions...........2004-07-21

As a young feminist, I was really hoping to love this book. However, the character of Lauren Fontaine, as others have mentioned, is simply someone to whom the average woman cannot relate. She is gorgeous, sexy, a brilliant financial wizard respected by all in her field, and is worth millions. On top of this, she has a wonderful "housekeeper" who is her best friend and a loving teenage son. She suddenly becomes the leader of the feminist movement in the U.S. due to her charisma and wonderful speaking skills. I found her to be annoying and too good to be true. A Mary Sue type of character.
The plotline held my interest, but I have to admit to skimming some parts. As another reviewer mentioned, the lack of concern during the sex strike over the high incidence of rapes and domestic violence struck me as insanely selfish on Lauren and her friends' parts. The way Lauren got out of her securities trading trial was over the top. And then of course, to top it all off, the man she has idolized and had a crush on since she was a teenage falls madly in love with her and the two share a strong sexual attraction. If only :)
I think Anne Faulk had a great idea and it seems as though other reviewers have enjoyed the book. But it was the character of Lauren which kept me from truly enjoying Holding Out. Perhaps a character who wasn't so perfect would have held more resonance for me--a woman who is not perfect, not blonde, and most certainly not a financial wizard.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, Steamy, and great for a new Feminist........2004-06-01

Yes, the characters are a little extreme, but this IS fiction after all. What good is it to write a book without a little spice? They all have their fair share of problems that any person can relate to: a fiance that died, falling in love with a married man, and getting a divorce. I think the point of making Lauren so successful was to show women that they too can be. I read this book last summer, and it took me around two days. I couldn't put it down. I am re-reading it, and discussing the book with people is slightly difficult. I have found that the word feminist is like a dirty word; no one wants to hear it nor try to understand it. This book is great for anyone that is just getting into feminism. It blends romance, straight and gay people, feminism, and women coming together among other things. The one thing that really stood out for me was the way the women were tense around each other. That seems to be incredibly true. Any feminist that loves to read needs to buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars intelligent women only.......2004-05-16

i bought this book 3 years ago as a bargain book to read on a trip. i read about 5 pages and promptly forgot about it. a year later i was rummaging through my carry-on luggage (which was still packed from that trip a year ago) and found it. i started reading it and couldn't put it down. i've since purchased it for most of my girlfriends. i loved lauren and wanted to fight right with her. maybe it's the democrat in me that's too willing to march in dc, but i think this book is a must read for any intelligent woman who cares about social issues.

5 out of 5 stars Whats it all about........2002-07-31

I read this book on loan from a local library. I checked out three books and this was, at the time, the least compelling I had in my stack. I ended up reading it first and I am glad that I did.

The book is about a sex strike imposed by American women until a wife-beating Chief Justice is extracted from the Supreme Court. So that is the plot. But what I think the book is really about is why we, and I mean all of us, don't stand up for what we think are our base set of morals more often.

Lauren Fontaine, the protragonist and my new hero, stands up and winds up in prison, chastised by men and women alike, and celibate with only her convictions to accompany her. In other words, OUCH!!!

Once one sets aside the sex strike--and by which I mean accepts it as a protest to gain power (as if it were a boycott of a product for example), I believe that the book appeals to any person who loves reading about a courageous, dedicated person who you can't help but root for. The scene in the church made me cry. Those who have read the book know what I'm talking about. The scene is not more than 40 words long but it snaps you into the world that not only Fontaine lives in but one that we all live in: A world that often punishes those who try to make it better and rewards those who contribute to the denegration of society. If you were not a fan of Lauren Fontaine by that point, you would be afterward.

This book is about a woman, written by a woman, and probably for women but I feel that anybody who puts fourth the effort to read this fast moving, witty, and excellent work will be happy they did. It is time well spent.

Excellent work Ms. Faulk.

2 out of 5 stars A bit trashy for my effort.......2002-03-04

Now my review will really reflect my taste in books. Jackie Collins, Olivia GOldsmith (etc) have never been my favorite reads. While I can admit that they may be a fun guilty pleasure as you lay by the pool the time it takes to read for the minimal plot is not a fair trade. Such style we read in Holding Out. Before buying be prepared for some explicit scenes (not exactly romantic but definitely HOT) and for a main character who is so stuck on herself I was actually embarassed for her. The dialog is a bit elementary and I felt idealistic to portray the cool, rich characters in a smooth way, but for me it didn't work. Maybe you might feel differently if you like a more "light" read, but this is not really book club material. I did get a laugh out of flipping to the Author photo in the back cover, who surprise surprise looks amazingly like the "heroine" of the book with their lives played out so much the same.

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest modern American novellas (plus an extra).......2003-10-11

Elisabeth Sanxay Holding's THE BLANK WALL has twice been made into memorable movies: Max Ophuls' RECKLESS MOMENT, with Joan Bennett and James Mason in the post-War period, and THE DEEP END just a few years ago with Tilda Swinton. Expect a few more. This is one of the finest modern American novellas written, regardless of its pulp origins, and is thus simultaneously rich on any number of lveles while it remains breathlessly suspenseful. Lucia, a well-to-do mother raising her children by a lakeside in wartime while her husband fights overseas, finds herself (through her daughter's affair) covering up a manslaughter, then becomes entangled in blackmail and even murder. The novella is really an extended meditation on identity, gender, class , nationality and even race during the late modernist period, and brilliantly shifts back and forth within Lucia's consciousness from how she understands herself and how others see her. Her frantic attempt to keep the disparties in place is one of the most astonishing accomplishments of this narrative.

THE BLANK WALL is so very fine that the added novella, THE INNOCENT MRS. DUFF, is just frosting on the cake. It isn't nearly at the level of Harding's masterpiece (the main character is too dislikable, and the plot he involves himself in is too farfetched), but it serves as a somewhat fascinating comparison point for other novels told from the point of view of a killer (such as THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY or MALICE AFORETHOUGHT).

    5 out of 5 stars classic suspense.......2003-06-12

Why Elisabeth Holding is not more famous is a mystery to me (almost all of her novels are out of print, a fate which once befell another neglected genius, Jim Thompson). Her novels deal with ordinary individuals caught up in events beyond their control, and her meticulous detailing of their struggles to overcome their situations builds quietly until it hits like a tsunami crashing into shore. Recommended for people who like reading about real people rather than pawns in a manipulative plot.

5 out of 5 stars Suspense by a Master that Stands the Test of Time.......2002-03-29

Two upper class individuals living in WWII America have their routine lives suddenly upended by interference from a less than desirable segment of society. In "The Blank Wall", Lucia is a well-meaning dedicated Navy wife, responsible for her father and her two teen-aged children. She is making an admirable go of it, managing from day to day, providing nurture in the form of balanced meals in spite of rationing, reliable steadfast advise for her elderly father and her normally angst ridden teenagers and deliberately routine letters sent to her husband to insure him of their normalcy. When her 17-year old daughter's involvement with a sleazy pornographer comes to Lucia's attention, her normal , just-getting-by existence is shattered. Suddenly she is forced to deal with the shady Mr. Nagle and his associate Mr. Donnelly to protect her way of life. The outcome is more than she bargained for...

In "The Innocent Mrs. Duff", Mr. Duff has become bored with his young wife, Reggie, twenty years his junior. He imagines how wonderful his life would be again if his first wife had not died. While fantasizing about ridding himself of Reggie and perhaps starting a life with his son's nanny, Miss Castle, the uppercrust Duff entangles himself with his street smart driver, Nolan and embarks on an interlude that jeopardizes everything he holds dear.
The author allows the reader of both these novellas to really get into the day-to-day nitty-gritty that actually makes people people. Through dialogue and musings, we see the inner workings Lucia and Duff well enough understand their predicaments and shake our heads over the turn of events.

The Blank Wall was made into a movie "The Deep End"; the circumstances revolving around the blackmailing motif in the movie have been slightly modernized, but the emotions of the two main characters are superbly transferred to the screen.

Thoroughly and strongly recommended to all those who love classic suspence.

One of the best of the Next Generation stories; the basic concept is deeper and more serious than most, dealing as it does with the conflicted emotions that most Federation and Starfleet folk feel toward the Maquis and the difficult concept of being required by honor to help the Cardassains suppress the Maquis, but feeling on some level that doing so puts one on the side of the oppressors. This story does a good job of exploring that dichotomy, as well as showing how desperation, anger, and hatred can warp otherwise honorable Maquis into behaving as true villains.
The characterizations are excellent, the pacing is good, there is plenty of action and plenty of food for thought. All in all, an excellent story, handled well.

5 out of 5 stars STNG #39 Rogue Saucer - A truly exceptional numbered novel!.......2003-12-02

"Rogue Saucer" is, without a doubt, one of the best numbered novels in the Star Trek The Next Generation novel series. This exceptional novel was written by John Vornholt who, over the years, has proven himself to be one of the most consistently wonderful authors in the Star Trek genre. As with any of his other previous novels, "Rogue Saucer" once again reaffirms John Vornholt's extraordinary writing skills, from the exciting premise and the plot setup and execution to the fast pace, this novel scores in all areas.

As was standard for the time in which this novel was published, the cover art for "Rogue Saucer" is somewhat lackluster but it doesn't detract from the experience of the novel.

                  The premise:

This novel has some obvious influence from Star Trek "Generations," but it is placed shortly after the events in the seventh season's "Preemptive Strike."

The Enterprise's saucer section is put in "dry dock" for some needed repairs and the crew of the Enterprise is given the opportunity to test an experimental saucer, marrying it up with the primary hull. Before the command crew of the Enterprise, aboard the experimental saucer section, can get hooked up with the engineering hull, it is hijacked by the Maquis, in hopes of hijacking the primary hull of the Enterprise and using her against the Cardassians in the DMZ.

What follows from there is, as stated above, one of the best numbered novels in the STNG novel line. I truly enjoy how John Vornholt can bring in guest characters and use them so well, such as he did with this novel and Admiral Nechayev.

                  I highly recommend this and any other John Vornholt Star Trek novel as you will most certainly find in your hands, some of the best Star Trek fiction available! {ssintrepid}

                  5 out of 5 stars ST-TNG: Rogue Saucer.......2003-03-11

Star Trek-The Next Generation: Rogue Saucer written by John Vornholt is an action-adventure novel spiced with a plot to steal an experimental new saucer section being fitted to the U.S.S. Enterprise.

As the U.S.S. Enterprise has its saucer section being refitted for damage and upgrading a new improved saucer section is being issued to replace the old section. Adniral Nechayev, Commander Riker, Data, Worf, and LaForge are on the new saucer section taking it out on a shake-down cruise when all of a sudden it's being hijacked by a group of loyal Maquis. The Maquis are a band of rebels that want to drive the Cardassians out of the homeland planets by any means possible.

Now, faced with a dilemma, Captain Jean-Luc Picard must choose between his friends lives aboard the saucer section and his orders from Admiral Nechayev to destroy the hijacked saucer section. This storyline has a lot of action-adventure and will keep the reader on the edge of his/her seat as Picard must resolve this dilemma.

The saucer section being hijacked is a newer model that can survive a re-entry and landing and be reused again. That is why the Maquis are so interested in obtaining this new ship for their on going fight with the Cardassians. Commander Fulton, Blue Moon, and Peacock are the Maquis who take over and hijack the new saucer section.

Picard must solve this and other twists and turns in the plot in order to resolve the situation before it gravely affects the Enterprise in an all out attack.

You won't be disappointed in this novel as there is intrigue, some mystery, but there is a lot of action-adventure as the U.S.S. Enterprise is divided and under attack.

                  5 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!!!!!.......2002-07-13

Its a great book I loved reading it and now im gonna read it again.

3 out of 5 stars twists and turns.......2002-06-01

This is a good story, but the number of twists and turns reduces its credibility. The basic story is predictable from the title and the early introduction of the Maquis, but the details and the twists are not predictable. However, ignoring a few minor typos and inconsistencies, it is an entertaining story. See other reviews for parts of the plot.

5 out of 5 stars Speaking Intimately with Divine Power.......2003-08-10

Perhaps you are wondering how a mortal could presume to be an authority on how to "get the ear" of the Creator? Then you have probably not read Yogananda's "Autobiography of a Yogi" ( ISBN 0876120834 ), because he describes there his life-long (and successful) search for communion (and union) with The Infinite. During his search, Yogananda made insightful study of the great world scriptures, especially those of India and Judeo-Christianity; more importantly, he studied for ten years directly under one of the most revered yoga masters of India. From Yogananda's search, from his own relentless prayer and meditation, and from his personal experience teaching other seekers he concluded that there is no approach to God has the spiritual potency of this prescribed combination: yoga-deepened meditation plus devotional practice. This handsome little introduction to the highlights of Yogananda's teaching culls from his numerous published works scores of explosive insights for dynamiting difficulties along your spiritual climb. Unlike authors that parrot wisdom they have heard from others, Yogananda speaks from the authority of one who has experienced the view from the mountain top - and the glimpses he gives you of the view will take your breath away. The yoga master's guidance is divided into six sections:

                      I. Real prayer is a demand of the soul; and the soul has only one need: re-union with its Creator. Wants and wishes are endless... and unreliable. Attuning to and encouraging the need of the soul to realize its immortality, its divinity empowers your prayer. Yogananda urges the reader to cultivate prayer from that depth and explains the vastness of the power you tap thereby.

II. Concentrate the mind's force through yoga. In Shakespeare's HAMLET, even the fratricidal Claudius can see the meaningless of seeming to pray by merely mouthing words -- without the mind and feeling really focusing there [ "My words fly up; my thoughts remain below. Words without thoughts never to Heaven go." ]

III. Know what to pray for. While conceding that you are free to ask for anything from your loving Creator, Yogananda argues persuasively for enabling the Omniscient One to help you pray wisely.

IV. Have a clear conception of God: a conception that you can love, that you can trust, that you can feel intimate with; a God whose essence is love and who is readier to help you than you are to ask.

                      V. Praying with dynamic will power. Yogananda was a teacher of irrepressible determination to adhere to the highest principles and accomplish the greatest service to humanity. As an Eastern teacher in the conservatively Christian America of the 20's and 30's, the obstacles to his mission were Himalayan. His advice on developing super-human *dynamic* will is based on the principles that he used to establish against all odds a world-wide community of spiritual education that continues vibrantly fifty years after his passing.

VI. Reclaiming your inner sanctuary. The last pages contain some of Yogananda's most beautiful guidance on how to cultivate and sustain your inner peace, your connectedness with omnipresent Spirit -- the state from which prayer becomes natural, intimate, and essentially one with the divine response.

Besides making a superb gift for a friend who may be struggling spiritually, the gems in this collection are excellent to keep at the desk or bedside of a seasoned spiritual aspirant: ideal for random opening to see what encouragement Spirit has for any moment.

5 out of 5 stars THE MOST LASTING GIFT-INSPIRATION !.......1998-09-02

It is wonderful that this universally appealing guide to the sacred art of Prayer is published in a Gift edition.
