Acceptable.......2006-05-13
This brief series of selections from the first part of Quijote is probably an adequate text for those who have only recently started reading Spanish and are bent on reading Cervantes in something approaching the original as quickly as possible.
However, the author never makes clear what principles he has followed in modifying the language in order to make it more accessible to "intermediate" students. Sometimes, a word is changed; sometimes, an entire passage has been paraphrased; sometimes, large parts have been left out altogether.
Cervantes orginal language is surprisingly comprehensible to the modern student; clarity is one the many signs of his genius. This very accessibility is a bit of a drawback; "intermediate" students are still presumably trying to get their Spanish in working order, and Cervantes may taint their language in the way Quijote's own "feridas" and other archaic lingo tainted his.
I'd recommend that readers hold out a bit longer, then use a well-annotated Quijote intended for native speakers, such as Riquer's or Rico's.
"Don Quijote's disgrace is not his fantasy, but Sancho Panza".......2005-07-27
This bold statement of Franz Kafka resumes the true essence of the meaning of this surprising, captivating and still engaging book through the years.
This was precisely the year in which we are just celebrating the 400 th anniversary of the first edition of this first order level work.
The Spanish writer Pio Baroja affirmed once: "Don Quijote is like love; when it recovers the judge is because it's just dying".
The tribulations, mental disorders and the fuzzy logic that inspires his controversial actions are far beyond the simple and cold cerebral analysis: you must be in anagogic level; the fourth level of the consciuous according Goethe, in which the coordinates of the pure reason simply vanish and the doors of perception open before our mind. It a stargate (to employ Roland Emerich's film) , where the presence of a simple woman becomes to him in his muse: Dulcinea del Toboso and his reason for live.
Sancho Panza will be his link with the real world, his counter weight living: Eros and Psique's myth once more reborns.
Rivers of ink have been employed to describe the outrageous behavior of Don Alonso Quijano who tired of being himself (after reading countless adventures never lived by himself) decided to leap the twilight zone and from being a simple spectator transforming himself in actor -for better or worst- to change the world in his epic attitude.
I just want to add you must read this book at least four times in your life, because as a true masterpiece, its meaning changes according your values, interest, maturity and mental growth.
"It's a great pitty the nuts don't have the right to talk about sensately about the madness of the sanity persons"
William Shakespeare
Aventuras de don quijote.......2001-04-09
Response to the self proclaimed reviewer of "Aventuras" The self appointed reviewer from Nebraska with a negative about " Aventuras" shows that he doesn't understand the teaching of "Don Quijote". I would like to know his qualifications! In order to expedite instruction and convey meaning, one has to explain rapidly all intrincancies of DQ. In order to do so, the editor has explained, in the quickest manner (English), cultural context, abstract concepts, and references in order to keep the integrity of the reading of such a treasure short (like every page and a half (sic.) The author of this edition was awarded the "Encomienda con Placa en la Orden de Alfonso X el Sabio" by His Majesty King Juan Carlos in 1995. That is the highest recognition Spain awards for works of this quality.
A tragic gutting of a great story........1999-02-13
This is a servicable abridgement, easy to read and an okay place to start for non-native speakers of Spanish, in their second or third year of study. However, the editor sees fit to interrupt the narrative every page and a half with notes in English. The most galling aspect is the study questions in Spanish after each chapter, which ask about information introduced in the English language notes. Keep looking for a good edition, this isn't it.
Excellent Spanish language edition for intermediate students.......1998-06-28
Marcel C. Andrade does a wonderful job presenting a Spanish language edition of Part I of Don Quijote for intermediate level students of the Spanish language. Unusual vocabulary is listed next to the text in the margin; and the explanatory notes give historical and literary background that bring the text to life. This is the best place to start for English-speaking students of the Spanish language who are approaching the original Spanish text of Don Quijote for the first time.

Lathrop's Spanish edition for students.......2007-03-21
Tom Lathrop's edition is perfect for students of Spanish. The introduction, glosses, and footnotes are in English while the text itself is in Spanish. The popularity of the style of this edition spawned a growing series of "Spanish Classics" called "Cervantes & Co." ([...]).
Great edition of Cervantes' work for native English speakers.......2006-11-22
Miguel de Cervantes. El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha. Edited by Tom Lathrop. Fourth Centenary Edition. Newark, Delaware: Cervantes & Co., 2005. xlviii + 888 pgs. Softcover. ISBN 1589770242.
Lathrop's edition is, as far as I know, the only edition of the Spanish text of Don Quijote with English notes. As Lathrop explains in the introduction, all-Spanish editions are designed for native Spanish speakers. The editors therefore do not gloss quite a bit of cultural and language information that native Spanish speakers know, but native English speakers do not. Lathrop, a native English speaker, knows where the pitfalls are for English students and has edited accordingly.
His text is that of the unmodernized Schevill-Bonilla edition. In Lathrop's edition, spelling is modernized only when it does not affect the pronunciation; thus "yua" becomes "iba," but "ansí" remains "ansí." Only in a few cases have I found this confusing; normally I can easily deduce the modern form of the word in question.
A potentially controversial aspect of Lathrop's edition is that he does not change any apparent inconsistencies in the Quijote. He believes things such as chapter titles that don't match what happened in the chapter and the contradictory theft of Sancho's donkey were intended by Cervantes, who wanted to make fun of similar things in the romances. He makes a good case for the decision in the introduction.
The text is annotated in two ways: marginal glossing and footnotes. The former is used for short equivalencies: "la cristiandad" = Christendom, "orgullo" = pride. Footnotes are used to give English translations of extra-convoluted sentences, or to provide background information about the text. To his credit, Lathrop does not use the footnotes to interpret the work. (He has also compiled a "Don Quijote Dictionary," the text of which is available free. Since words are glossed only once, the Dictionary is really handy when you've forgotten something.)
I began reading the Quijote in an all-Spanish edition while I was taking Spanish IV. By Chapter 16, I had given up: it was simply too difficult, and I was having to consult Ormsby's English translation far too often. Now, using Lathrop's edition, I very rarely have to look at the English, and I'm enjoying Cervantes much more. A case could be made that using an all-Spanish edition is more satisfying, and I'm sure it is. But it was too discouraging for me. At many universities, Don Quijote in Spanish is a graduate-level course; Lathrop's edition makes the Quijote accessible to people like me who aren't at the graduate level but still want to read Cervantes in the original.

Product Description
Books are a reprint of a scholarly study of Don Quixote
that was first printed in the 1840's.
Book Description
Fantasy fans, rejoice! Seven years after writer and editor Robert Silverberg made publishing history with Legends, his acclaimed anthology of original short novels by some of the greatest writers in fantasy fiction, the long-awaited second volume is here. Legends II picks up where its illustrious predecessor left off. All of the bestselling writers represented in Legends II return to the special universe of the imagination that its author has made famous throughout the world. Whether set before or after events already recounted elsewhere, whether featuring beloved characters or compelling new creations, these masterful short novels are both mesmerizing stand-alones—perfect introductions to the work of their authors—and indispensable additions to the epics on which they are based. Beyond any doubt, Legends II is the fantasy event of the season.
ROBIN HOBB returns to the Realm of the Elderlings with “Homecoming,” a powerful tale in which exiles sent to colonize the Cursed Shores find themselves sinking into an intoxicating but deadly dream . . . or is it a memory?
GEORGE R. R. MARTIN continues the adventures of Dunk, a young hedge knight, and his unusual squire, Egg, in “The Sworn Sword,” set a generation before the events in A Song of Ice and Fire.
ORSON SCOTT CARD tells a tale of Alvin Maker and the mighty Mississippi, featuring a couple of ne’er-do-wells named Jim Bowie and Abe Lincoln, in “The Yazoo Queen.”
DIANE GABALDON turns to an important character from her Outlander saga—Lord John Grey—in “Lord John and the Succubus,” a supernatural thriller set in the early days of the Seven Years War.
ROBERT SILVERBERG spins an enthralling tale of Majipoor’s early history—and remote future—as seen through the eyes of a dilettantish poet who discovers an unexpected destiny in “The Book of Changes.”
TAD WILLIAMS explores the strange afterlife of Orlando Gardiner, from his Otherland saga, in “The Happiest Dead Boy in the World.”
ANNE McCAFFREY shines a light into the most mysterious and wondrous of all places on Pern in the heartwarming “Beyond Between.”
RAYMOND E. FEIST turns from the great battles of the Riftwar to the story of one soldier, a young man about to embark on the ride of his life, in “The Messenger.”
ELIZABETH HAYDON tells of the destruction of Serendair and the fate of its last defenders in “Threshold,” set at the end of the Third Age of her Symphony of Ages series.
NEIL GAIMAN gives us a glimpse into what befalls the man called Shadow after the events of his Hugo Award–winning novel American Gods in “The Monarch of the Glen.”
TERRY BROOKS adds an exciting epilogue to The Wishsong of Shannara in “Indomitable,” the tale of Jair Ohmsford’s desperate quest to complete the destruction of the evil Ildatch . . . armed only with the magic of illusion.
From the Hardcover edition.

Interesting but not really for young kids.......2005-02-02
As a fantasy-lover, I'd say the story and graphics make the series unique and interesting but this book in particular (book 4), has scenes that can only be appropriate for adults (e.g., an elf orgy). I'd recommend to parents, teachers or librarians to scan the books first before giving it to young kids.

good, but..........2005-03-19
Of course, being an ElfQuest fan, I love pretty much everything ElfQuest, including this book, and so will you if you like ElfQuest in general.
However, this is the paperback/black and white edition-don't buy it! Warp and Marvel comics are coming out with hardback, color editions of I believe all of the ElfQuest storyline, just slightly re-organized from the last hardcover/color edition of their graphic novels that they released- heads up, don't go paying fifty bucks online for someone's used old copy! Unless you're really impatient don't go buying this! The next one to be redone in color and hardback should be #3! They've done 1 and 2!
Although it will be more expensive that way, if you're going to bother getting into something that is primarily a visual medium, why not in color as it was meant to be seen? Nothing "artistic" about this kind of B&W, it just loses.
Wow...this is good!.......2000-12-16
If you are new to the world of elfquest this is the third book in the elfquest line. Before it comes the books Fire and Flight(book #1)and the Forbbiden Grove(book #2). In this book, you meet the Gliders, a group of elves that claims to be the High Ones. You also meet the dark and evil Winnowill, a healer but one which uses her powers for hurting rather then healing.Lastly you learn the secret of the Wolfriders... I won't give away the story but I do reccomend you buy this book for its art, story and feeling...
GREAT.......1999-10-13
I thought this was one of the best books in the EQ series, and coming from me thats saying quite a bit, oh and Winnowill is a subject worth thinking about.
This Graphic Novel is the piece that has shaped my life!.......1999-09-17
ElfQuest is a wounderful series for anyone whom reads it. It is full of some of the personal expierences from Wendy and Richard Pini's own life, it contains moral lessons, it has incredible insight, a dynamic story and georgeous artwork, do not pass this book up! IT ROCKS!!!
Only one word needed here........Awesome!.......1999-07-12
This is the third book out of four collections of the original quest which are, in my opinion, works of genius!! The first book is Fire and Flight, the second - The Forbidden Grove, and the last (In my opinion, as the stuff that follows doesn't really seem like Elfquest to me) is the Quest's End. I have been reading those same four books over and over again for 15 years and I feel that they have enriched my life.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe best of first fours...!.......2001-01-23
I say this is more (much more) bloody than others of four ordinary ElfQuest, but it is writed well. There is a story much morer than ever in "Fire & Flight". Kahvi's the new character in this( you see her in picture) , and she is the chief on elkriders, who call themselves Go-Backs. Go-Backs live in shadow of mountains were is a HOME OF HIGH ONES. And with wolfriders they found it. once more i will say: Wolfriders never die. Yes, I know one-eye just did in a "Captives of Blue mountain", but, if you read this, you se how many of Go-Backs die. And that is normal. But NONE of wolfriders. They have armors as much as Go-backs.
But to end this, I tell you: Wendy and Richard teach us in every book , and they tell about life.
eq book 4.......2000-09-07
VERY GOOD!! the best yet.
eq book 4.......2000-09-07
VERY GOOD!! the best yet.
The BEST work ever produced from the "Elfquest" couple!.......2000-04-09
Believe me, you just won't believe this! This is the most skillfully drawn and written part of the whole "Elfquest" series next to the part about the adventures in the Blue Mountain. In fact, you won't see anything like this ever again in any Elfquest tales, nor even the future ones yet to come, I suspect. The great epic of war against the bloodthirsty Trolls of the Great White North begins right after the imprisonment of elves in the Blue Mountain by the witchlike Winnowill - a real teeth-rattling clash of so many different characters, old or new with their individual personalities and differences. In additional, a whole galaxy of the fantastic environment on the far-off World of Two Moons really opens up for the very first time to your mortal human eyes - from the monstrous labyrinth of the Troll lair to the shimmering walls of the long-lost Palace of the High Ones - with a whole bagful of earth-shaking surprises to boot! If you already have this rare book or are lucky enough to get your hands on a copy, I sincerely promise you that you just won't be able to put it down, nor read it just once!
The culmination of the Quest, revisited.......2000-01-02
For the first time since the original Elfquest story was released as a 20-issue series (from 1978 to 1984), it has been published in the original black-and-white format; the new Reader's Collection printing of Book 4 includes issues 16 to 20 (the last five), dealing with the elves' campaign to wrest control of their ancestral home, the Palace of the High Ones, from a hostile, heavily armed tribe of trolls.
By now much ink has been devoted to the originality and emotional conviction of the Pinis' tale, and of course Wendy's artistic skills need no further explanation. However, it is good to see, once again, the sheer quality - and expressiveness - of the artist's pencil-work as originally presented; some of this was obscured by the mediocre coloring of the editions published since the late Eighties (quite unlike the elegant coloring-work of the earlier Donning versions of the first four volumes, still worth having after all these years).
It has been said many times before, but it should be said, again, that the Pinis demonstrate their storytelling prowess by breaking the conventions of fantasy fiction; most importantly, the fulfillment of the quest is seen to be costly, even in the loss both of lives and innocence; and the battle, though necessary for the elves to reach their goal, is not their be-all and end-all - the truly life-changing events lie further ahead. The climax of this story possesses a nuance and thoughtfulness worthy of "real" fiction, and this, even more than the superlative artwork, gives the tale its substance and emotional power.
A final note on the presentation: some printing errors have unfortunately crept into this Reader's Collection book (as they also have in volumes 5 and 12a (the first printing only) of the series) - many pages are out of their proper order, so if you are new to EQ, try to find and earlier edition of Book 4 to enable yourself to follow the plot correctly. That caution aside, it is good to have the original EQ storyline again - now priced to gain a new audience.
Book Description
Expositions from Philippians consider Paul's instruction on consistent integrity and the cross as the center of life.
Customer Reviews:
Pleasantly surprised with this book.......2005-10-03
I bought this book only because I've read Exegetical Fallacies by Carson and I was doing a sermon series on Philippians. While comparing this book to other works on Philippians, it is lacking in technical detail on many issues, but it outshines my other resources in presenting the thrust of the book in a memorable and practical way. So for a preaching/teaching minister who is working through Philippians, I think this is a valuable resource.
For example...when working through Philippians chapter 1 I had come to a summary conclusion on my own...and adjusted it after reading other commentaries. I had to rethink everything after reading Carson and eventually rewrote my sermon notes because of this perspective...I found it compellingly accurate. Instead of simply evaluating Paul's emphasis on thanksgiving and prayer as most works do...and showing the patterns in detail that relate to ancient forms of writing...Carson analyzes the content of these two paragraphs in Philippians 1 and says that the key is 'Put the gospel first'. He then applies that in different arenas...such as in your prayer life...fellowship with other believers and so on. When you reread Philippians 1 again it is clear that he has pointed out accurately what was going on.
Fresh summary from a deeper perspective. I had lost that perspective in the details of the verse by verse analysis with my other commentaries (some of the very best included). So this is an excellent book. It's different than anything else I have on Philippians. Highly recommended!
Challenging to the core.......2000-02-07
This is a great little commentary. D A Carson has done an excellent job of teasing out the flow of the letter as Paul might have intended it. It is because of this and the exceptionally practical nature of Carson's exposition that I can recommend this book to every Christian. It is also set out in such a way as to be useful for group Bible studies.
Buy it today!.......1999-03-06
Even though it is very small, Carson's book is deep, practical, straight-forward and challenging. It makes a great resource for pastors. It is like a mini-commentary on the book, full of great insight. Buy a copy soon and use it for personal devotion or as a starter for sermon ideas on Philipians.
Simple, non-technical introduction to Philippians.......1998-10-09
Another one of Carson's books which began as expositions at a Christian conference. Reading this book, you can almost hear the author speaking to you.He tells a number of helpful stories throughout the book which powerfully bring home the points he is illustrating.
The book is simple, but it shows a deep understanding of Paul and his theology. It will help you to fall in love with Paul's letter, but also with the Christ whom Paul urges us to emulate and serve.
