Book Description

With "careful prose and a tone of humble striving" (New York Times Book Review), this revelatory first novel by a cloistered monk traces a young man's search for wisdom among the inhabitants of a Cistercian monastery. In 1973, Paul Seneschal, a shy nineteen-year-old from rural Manitoba, takes flight from the world behind the wrought iron gates of St. Norbert Abbey. Here forty monks grow their own food, wake at three in the morning to pray, and converse largely through a spare but expressive vocabulary of hand signals. Renamed Brother Antoine, Paul strives for wisdom and holiness, yet life within the cloister can't block out all of humanity's foibles. One monk lapses into pyromania; another, a French Canadian, attacks any English-speaker who gets too close; another resembles "a bald Martha Ray." We soon see that even in this rarefied realm, human folly nestles cheek by jowl with the divine. A wise yet refreshingly humorous account of a life of faith, ALL WE KNOW OF HEAVEN offers an a fascinating glimpse into a quiet world that very few people know about.

3 out of 5 stars Too Much Information.......2007-01-21

Although interesting, "All We Know of Heaven," is a bit more than I'd like to know. The main character's battle with his homosexuality is a valid subject for a community of cloistered men. However, the detail in which this struggle is described and the character's attempt to rectify the situation made me uncomfortable enough to contemplate discontinuing any further reading of the book.

The casual reader looking for a source of entertainment may find this book boring. The story has no conventional line, i.e. introduction - tension and relief. It's the simple story of a young man who joins a Catholic monastery and his experiences over the years. Each chapter is essentially a new story as opposed to a traditional line that has chapters connected to each other like train cars.

If you have any interest in monastic life you will probably enjoy "All We Know of Heaven." (As long as you skip chapter 4, that is.)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Accurate Portrayal.......2007-01-09

This is one of the best books I've read. The is story is well crafted. I am reliably informed that this is the way life really is inside a Cistercian monastery. The characters come across as real, recognizable people with all their many saintly qualities and human failings. I would recommend this book without hesitation

5 out of 5 stars All We Know of Heaven is Heaven!.......2006-07-03

This novel by Remy Rougeau is one of those books you deliberately read slowly so it won't end too quickly. I enjoyed so much the humor and the familiar tone of understanding human nature. The men in the monastary are human, funny, crazy and touching in their loyalty and their desire to live for God. This is a book of faith revealed but also expressing human foibles we know as human beings. This book made me smile sadly at the end simply because it refreshed me and yet I didnt want to close the cover. There was a bittersweet desire for more.

4 out of 5 stars An Invitation To A World Few Of Us Will Ever Know.......2005-04-07

ALL WE KNOW OF HEAVEN is to monastic life what DIARY OF A COUNTRY PRIEST is to priesthood. It tells the story of Paul Seneschal, who in the book becomes Brother Antoine, a Cistercian monk. Like the main character of the Bernanos classic, Brother Antoine is a compelling character because he is ordinary. While he is in monastic life, he is not a mystic. Prayer is at time difficult for him and he even wonders if the prayer routine is necessary even though it is the basis and structure of monastic life. Though he seems suited for life in the monastery, this is due more to his demeanor than religious fervor. He has a fierce battle with celibacy at one point, but the incident is more horrific than heroic. His life is mundane, and there seems to be very little that would compel him to stay in religious life. Still he is dedicated and when he discovers that he has accomplished something by persevering, we feel joy for him and know that he will be a good monk and will be able to withstand the challenges and difficulties of such a life.

ALL WE KNOW OF HEAVEN is more than good fiction. It easily challenges the ideal and bliss-filled life to we could imagine life in a monastery to be. Remy Rougeau brings us into the world of St. Norbert Abbey. While the monastery itself is fictitious, Rougeau was a Cistercian and is still a monk in the Benedictine tradition and we get a sense from the details dispersed throughout the book that places like St. Norbert's exist and the author knows this first hand. We find rather off beat characters in the other monks and few examples of religiosity and piety. We may not discover the holiness we expect, but we do discover humanity and people in an imperfect but sincere search for God and meaning in life. Perhaps this is why this book is so powerful. Even those of us who are not in monastic life try and search fro God and meaning in life. A character like Paul Seneschal, a.k.a. Brother Antoine can speak so powerfully to nay of us and move us is because, we too are searching for the same things albeit in a different manner.

5 out of 5 stars an interesting insight into a mysterious world.......2003-06-12

This is one of the few books that I went on a whim and decided to buy. And I'm glad I did. It was a pleasure to see the author spending less time on the religious aspect of the story, and pay more attention to the story about a boy. The author simply and steadily connects the reader to the young narrator, and it's easy to identify with this young man's flight through personal trials in a rather odd surrounding. I think everyone can relate to the character whether it be with his slightly dysfunctional yet loving parents, or with his mess of dizzying self-questioning. All-in-all, this book proved pleasing. Rougeau surprised me in his ability to pronounce the deep questions of religion and self, all without forgetting the never-failing realities of human beings. It just goes to show that even a lifestyle of purity and silence is outlined with its fair share of zany and "slightly-off" predicaments and people.

When I bought this book, I was so excited. I love a good love story and was prepared to bawl my eyes out. However, I didn't cry - the reason being that I didn't like the book. I was just so disappointed by the way Anna Tuttle Villegas decided to write what could have been a beautiful love story.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet and Lovely Book.......2004-03-29

This was a sweet book - well and simply written, with beautiful language and sentiment. It is hardly the greatest, deepest novel but I found it enjoyable and compelling to read. The characters were well developed and believable to me. I really liked it and would recommend it!

Here's a paragraph from "All We Know of Heaven." If you swoon, this book is for you; however, if it does not pass your giggle test, try something else: "Sometimes I find myself standing and staring, mesmerized by the memory of our lovemaking, the crests of feeling our love has pulled into being, waves as metered and inevitable as the real waves pulled back from all the beaches of the world by the strength of the moon." I can't believe I made it to the end of this 180 pages of silliness.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful love story, eloquently written........1999-02-12

I highly recomend this bittersweet romance. The lyrical writting of Ms.Villegas gives what some would call a tragidy, a triumphant ending. I became so enthralled with the caracters that I had a hard time putting the book down.

A salutary tale for young adults on the dangers of hasty marriage and the terrors of domestic abuse, this story aims for realism. She falls hard for Joel, a darkly charming boy with a violent past. Marriage, baby, and abuse follow in short order, with Charlotte and her gentle husband giving forthright and sensible advice that Bethany for the most part fails to heed.

5 out of 5 stars OPRAH SHOULD READ IT.......2000-05-12

I'm grateful this little-known book reached my hands. It's set in the southern U.S. during the depression. The author has a stong sense of place and the book seems both driven by the character of the town and of the individuals depicted. Its told in different voices (1st person) and its greatest strength is the compassion and fullness with which the author has treated even the worst of characters. This is a dark love-story. A good choice for a book club because it addresses (without being overly topical) several issues such as domestic violence and how childhood experience may inform adult choices. This is no "clicheish" southern novel. The author writes the accents with the perfect pitch. Her skill at creating a "voice" reminded me a bit of Zora Neale Hurston, although for the most part the voices are of a white southern dialect.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the saddest book I've ever read.......1997-10-20

Bethany is fortunate to have relatives who care for her so much but she fails to appreciate their advice to her as she plunges head-long into a relationship that is doomed from the start. The sad part is that this could be the story of many young girls who are blinded by a love so powerful that they disregard opportunities that seem at the time to be less exciting. If the story had ended a few chapters earlier, I couldn't have stood it but fortunately the reader is left with a feeling of hope for Bethany's future.

4 out of 5 stars Great addition to MTG.......2005-05-04

This is where so many of the characters are developed that lead to the other series. Seeing the obsession of Urza as he seeks a way to destroy Phyrexia and his interaction (or lack thereof) with those around him made the story compelling.Great addition to the cycle; I just wish Jeff Grubb or J.Robert King had done the second book in the Cycle.

5 out of 5 stars This book is one of, if not the best book in the MTG series........2005-02-07

This book is so refreshing. Some of the recent MTG books I've read have been rather dissappointing (Mirrodin cycle and Kamigawa cycle) compared to the beginning of the entire series (Brother's War, the Thran, the Ice Age cycle). This book is one of the best of the series... I think I enjoyed it more than the Brother's War.

It gives the a good glimpse into Urza's mind and world post-"insanity." His research is interesting, his artifacts are very cool, and his "relationships" with his students is ever awkward (but then again, how in the world can Urza Planeswalker carry on with mere humans). The metal golem, Karn, also plays a very powerfuly role in the book, exploring his purpose in the world and his role in Urza's plans. He is trying to discover, dare I say, his "humanity."

The whole time manipulation plays a very interesting role in the book, and as always the phyrexians are punks to the very core. I thought it was so facinating how the phyrexians were in a different time speed than Urza's school and the problems that resulted because of this.

I recommend this book to everyone, MTG fan or not. It is fun and interesting. J.Robert King writes a very compelling story with relatable characters on the verge of destruction.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Book.......2001-11-26

This book was pretty good,... I felt that this novel was very choppy. Years would pass all of a sudden, leaving you to wonder what happened during that period of time. I'd lose interest sometimes, leaving the book to sit for weeks before picking it back up again. Despite these faults, I really liked the concept of the "Alliance" of races, and I thought the battles were well written. I'm glad Yavamaya finally got some attention as well. Hopefully Bloodlines will keep my attention better.

5 out of 5 stars Book Review: Time Streams.......2001-11-08

After we were pretty discouraged from reading Planeswalker, J. Robert King knew he had to create a novel to recover the greatness of the Magic the Gathering "Artifacts Cycle" after Lynn Abbey wrote his book that barely reaches average. In Time Streams, the famous Tolaria is one of the main places were the story takes place. Tolaria is the place where Urza gathers the greatest minds in Dominaria to study at his academy (no, I didn't get this from the back cover, mind you). They include Malzra, Barrin, and the mischivous Teferi (to a huge extent he frequently calls Karn "Arty Shovelhead") . In the end of every chapter, there is a very intelegent monologue written by Barrin, Mage Master of Tolaria (it's fiction, J. Robert King wrote everything). In the prologue, it is only a monologue but it quickly addicts you to the story ( use thehandy tool on this page to look inside books and read the prologue, you'll know what I mean). Tolaria get's destroyed and many scholars killed by a Phyrexian threat, war becomes at hand. Ten years after the battle, Urza, Teferi, Karn, Barrin, Malzra, and the others return to the wreckage of former Tolaria and build a new academy called "New Tolaria". More battle comes and some may be tired out of battle, battle, battle, battle, battle, war, war, war, war, war, but I haven't read such an action-packed book since Apocalypse (Invasion Cycle, book III). Hopefully, you'll make a wise desicion and buy Time Streams. Ya'll love it.

              Alex

The starship Oberon is searching for its AWOL pilot when it crash-lands on an unknown planet, leaving all but a handful of its crewmembers dead. And those who remain are not alone in this strange, inhospitable world. A savage insectile race waits just below the surface, massing to obliterate the unwanted invaders. And the Oberon's last human survivors must look to unlikely allies for help: the apes they carried onboard. Using controversial gene technology, the starship's scientists hope to transform the primates into a powerful army -- strong, agile, subservient...and intelligent. But the consequences of playing God promise to be more devastating than anyone could have ever anticipated, ushering in a dark and terrifying future that will pit slave against master, ape against Man.

So far, this is a good book, but I had to write a pre-mature review saying that it makes me cringe every time the author calls the apes "monkeys." I'm not sure he's done his scietific research to write these novels.

              3 out of 5 stars Ape Myth.......2004-05-14

This is a very interesting book. It digs into the past of the recent ape movie. However, were the ideas was fresh it failed to hold my interest. It got receptive and long.
It's pretty good but I personally think it should have been gone though by the publisher a few more times.

2 out of 5 stars Planet of the Dislikable.......2003-10-06

As a boy in 1968 I had the pleasure of experiencing the "Planet of the Apes" phenomena first hand. I remember playing "Planet of the Apes" with my childhood friends. We would chase and capture each other as we took turns playing ape and marooned astronaut. I even remember collecting all the "Planet of the Apes" trading cards -- fond memories.

Consequently when I came across the book "Planet of the Apes: The Fall" when browsing I uncharacteristically purchased it on a whim. Unfortunately it was a disappointment.

Character development is minimal at best and the characters themselves are shallow and dislikable. The book also suffers from a tinge of politically correct stereotyping. The male characters are written as authoritarian, cowardly, hysterical and generally stupid. In contrast the female characters exhibit leadership, intelligence and bravery. But even these arch-matriarchs add little to the novel. They are mere feminist caricatures lacking any substance.

I also found the life form on the planet playing the role of adversary, the Brax, uninteresting. I would have preferred an adversary a little more tangible and believable.

However in its later stages the novel is somewhat rescued by two characters of interest, David and Jonathan. If not for these two characters I would not have finished the book or cared if the Brax annihilated the shipwrecked band humans and apes.

In summary, I wouldn't strongly recommend the book. However if you are stuck in an airport with few alternatives, I think it worthy of consideration.

3 out of 5 stars GREAT IDEA THAT FALLS SHORT!.......2002-10-20

I was elated to see that someone attempted to write a new series of the movie, which to me, was somewhat of a let down.
Now, the book had a great idea in many different levels, but poor characters made it drag.
Just in my personal opinion, the apes were not written well, and most of the characters were not likeable, except the two brothers of human and ape mixed ancestry.
That was the best part of the novel, the human boy and his ape brother getting along, then separating at the end.
But the battles were just bland to me. Now, I'm an action freak and this could have been an awesome beginning that could've breathed new life in a epic movie series, but didn't.

              4 out of 5 stars Very good ... a cool complement to Burton's film.......2002-07-13

I was very impressed with this book. It is based upon Tim Burton's PLANET OF THE APES (POTA) film of 2001, which I really liked. THE FALL explains what happened to the Oberon space station that we see in the beginning. It adds much to explaining the backstory of the movie.

It's really cool. Mr. Quick does a good job with his characters as they are easily distinguished from each other. The writing is above average. A clear writing style and it is fast paced.

Content: Surprisingly, the book contains quite a bit of cursing. There are at least a dozen "F" swears, among other cursing. There is some violence as well. Were this a movie, it would be rated R. This surprised me since Planet of the Apes is usually PG (or recently PG-13) material. Also note: the typical POTA left-wing themes are here, particularly feminism. But in general, it's not preachy.

All in all, a solid sci-fi adventure. I like the concepts, the characters, the writing. Fans of POTA in general -- and the new film in particular -- should check this one out.

I'm definitely looking forward to more books in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Ancient Truths in Modern Text.......2001-02-14

Spiritual Revolution is Michael's answer to our need for a handy sized reference manual on how to carry on throughout our days as we are caught in traffic, standing in line or just frazzeled at the end of the day. I recommend carrying it all times and opening it randomly to read a page, paragraph or just a word for encouragement.

Michael has some kind of a connection to knowledge of a higher source and has so generously shared it by writing this book.

5 out of 5 stars A book that is truly amazing and inspirational..........1999-08-28

I can't express in words how much this book has done for me. I came across "Spiritual Revolution" at a very opportune time in my life. This book has both inspired and healed me. It's a very simply read, yet profound book. I was just dabbling in spirituality when I began reading "Spiritual Revolution," but I wanted to dive in and swim beyond the horizon by the time I finished it. Besides helping me connect with my spiritual side, this book has helped me overcome everyday fears. It has made me a stronger, more motivated person. I've also learned to forgive and move on...something I'd always had trouble doing in the past. I'm so glad I was lucky enough to find a book so moving and brilliant. My eyes are peeled for the next writings from Michael Goddart.

5 out of 5 stars Judah Smith's 'Soul Seekers' is full-on for God.......2004-11-24

This awesome book is thin with small chapters that are laid-back but straight to the point. Judah speaks experiencially and Biblically about the God's heart for your friends. Honestly, God loves everyone you know personally and powerfully. This book is a great resource to empower you to know this love and live in a way that shows God's love to others. Chapters are titled; compassion, consecration without isolation, caring about the little things, confidence despite failure, constancy despite unfruitfulness, contending in uncharted territory, contriteness (of heart), Christ's commandments determining our action, citywide thinking & influence, community partnership, comprehending God's love for sinful people, courage in the face of fear, and committment. An extremely enjoyable book. I'm currently using it devotionally. John Bevere says 'His passion is contagious.' In other words, if you or any other youth wants to be passionate about what Jesus was passionate about - that is, seeking and saving the lost - then buy this book! (also a great gift for any age youth). BRING PEOPLE TO JESUS. BUY THIS BOOK.

Reverend Will McCormick has returned to Seattle, Washington, after a devastating dismissal from the leadership of his church in California. Questioning his faith, he reluctantly follows his older brother's advice to apply for the position of Chaplain in the roughest penitentiary on the West Coast. Will's interest in the position increases when he meets a beautiful young woman (Brin Alexander) who will be attending college just minutes away in the charming little town of Walla Walla.

Brin's search for self and life beyond the strict confines of her adoptive parents leads to an adventurous and controversial relationship between she and the wayward preacher. Together they face not only the demons of their past, but come to realize the battle they continually fight with an invisible and deadly enemy.

              Book Description

Some of the poems in Intimations of the Soul of a Seeker are narrative, some are mystical, some both. Short poetic essays are here, and portraits of people. Included are a critique of the Apostle's Creed, notes on our abandonment of Jefferson's final wording of the Declaration, and considerations of time and light relative to Augustine and Einstein. The poems invoke thoughts on bonding with Gobi camel herders, a visit to the prenatal state, acceptance, connections between colored glass and worn-out lives, the mysteries of darkness and light in human experience, and a rule of life (an American antithesis) that reflects Gandhi, the Bahagavad Gita and an integration of the Gita with the Sermon on the Mount. Much else is here. See for yourself.

In his poetry, H. D. sometimes attempts to approach or walk the limn between That which is real and that which is impermanent, or unreal. He recognizes that the limn cannot be crossed by the intellect. Even if H. D. could transcend the limn, he would be unable to express it. By approaching or attempting to walk the limn, H. D. hopes to entice others to join him in the quest to realize the truth of That Which Is.

I throughly enjoyed this book. The female character is at first hard to like, but then you come to understand her a bit more. She is very real. This book deals with real issues that everyone faces. The male character is very nice, he is your good guy that tries to help the female character and ends up realizing that he can't change her only God can. This book is worth your time. Enjoy!
