Book Description
With the publication of Naked Lunch in 1959, William Burroughs abruptly brought international letters into the postmodern age. Beginning with his very early writing (including a chapter from his and Jack Kerouac's never-before-seen collaborative novel), Word Virus follows the arc of Burroughs's remarkable career, from his darkly hilarious "routines" to the experimental cut-up novels to Cities of the Red Night and The Cat Inside. Beautifully edited and complemented by James Grauerholz's illuminating biographical essays, Word Virus charts Burroughs's major themes and places the work in the context of the life. It is an excellent tool for the scholar and a delight for the general reader. Throughout a career that spanned half of the twentieth century, William S. Burroughs managed continually to be a visionary among writers. When he died in 1997, the world of letters lost its most elegant outsider.

"And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks".......2006-05-25
WORD VIRUS; THE WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS READER
It's been 40 years since I've thought of, and much less read, William Burroughs. That was the sixties and I was at Columbia University, trying to deal with Quantitative Mathematics, the Vietnam War, and the counter culture all at the same time. The connection between Columbia and the Beat Movement was obvious: Allen Ginsberg had been there, Yippies ruled, and the Village was a hothouse for intellectuals and wannabe Beats.
I remember going to Harlem to visit James Baldwin through a mutual friend who later wrote Baldwin's biography (Baldwin was in Paris, however, so I never did meet him). I did meet William F. Buckley at a cocktail party, though.
But I digress, which is the point of my review. So did Burroughs, but it was a marvelous, multi-level digression that comes through in this collection from his works edited unevenly by James Grauerholtz and Ira Silverberg.
I read "Naked Lunch" when it was still scandalous and relatively new. I remember puzzling over the structure, or perhaps the lack of it, and the bizarre but at the same time accessible language. (At the time I was reading Modern British Authors with Edward Said.). Wading through EM Forster's "Howard's End," Virginia Wolfe's "To the Lighthouse," and Joyce's "Dubliners" and "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man"I realized there is something of Joyce in Burroughs, which is a compliment to Burroughs.
At the time, and for many years later, I was struggling with my own sexuality.
I was both fascinated and terrified by Burrough's blatant homosexuality. "Wild Boys," with its images of naked boys running amok in a post-9-ll society flaunting their erections, made me quiver at the thought. (It was only after I got out of a Liberal Arts College where that sort of thing wouldn't raise an eyebrow, and into the Female-less society of the US Army where homosexuality was a felony, that I had my first man-to-man sexual experience.)
Burroughs could put an entire paragraph into one sentence, as in "Institute for Advanced Sexual Studies Academy Bulletin #19, talking of the "Family Values" program of the Religious Right:
"It is precisely our aim to create children at a reasonable age with some
Immunity against the unfortunate influences that we cannot immediately
Control. Meanwhile, every effort must be made the crack the biologic Family Unit. It is no exaggeration to say that the family unit, with its drearily predictable yield of infantile trauma, is the most crippling basic factor in modern life."
Put that in your 700 Club, Pat Robertson, and Smoke it. Burroughs would have.
Useful introduction to the author's work.......2003-08-15
This book was a hard one to review. The writings sampled are inconsistent-but then again, so was Burroughs's output, so in that respect the writings are a true representation of Burroughs's corpus. The chapter introductions by Grauerholz are especially valuable for readers who are removed from Burroughs's original context, and assist in further illuminating Burroughs's writings. The later works (after the "cut-ups") are especially prophetic; it was interesting to read Burroughs's commentaries on Hussein and another Bush in 2003. All in all, a useful and comprehensive introduction to one who is seeking to get acquainted with the wide range of work that came from the pen of Burroughs.
great collection.......2002-02-02
A very exspansive and definitive collection for the Burroughs enthusist. This does not have it all, but it does offer a generous portion of this man's work. Including the forementioned, in the other reviews, colaboration with Jack Kerouac. Grauerholz really put togther this labor of love. I'd recomend it for first timers as well as old time collectors. Inbetween each chapter biographical information pertinent to that era is included. Also features a cd spoken word sampler, that pulls material from the Giornio boxed set. I'd also recomend that hefty delight.
The one Burroughs book to buy.......2001-07-06
The one book by William S. Burroughs you should buy. The unique genius that William truly was-yes, indulgent, odd and unsettling at 80, but how great it would have been to have known him young and probably pretty in 1950-is best understood with the direction of J. Grauerholz, although a bourgeois beatnik, for sure, who did love him and is the world expert on him. Ira Silverberg is a true young publishing genius, the new Ferlinghetti, and most responsible for the book. My earlier review I withdraw. Although true, it did not reflect the genius and truth of William-and Jack, Allen, Anne, Philip, Lawrence, Gregory, Gary, even Neal and Huncke, et al. View their literature with a full and clear understanding of their weaknesses and that we, the readers, are almost certain to have less ability to `drive-on' pass the drugs, sex, parties, confusion-to produce as they could or can. At least be warned. A lot of souls have been lost on the beat road.
Chilling.......2001-06-12
Every book that anyone owns will, upon reflection, remind them of the period of their life in which they read the book. Sort of like music.
If I look at my bookcase, I can run my eyes over the spines of a hundred or so spines, and by extension, a hundred or so feelings given to me from those books.
'Word Virus' is by no means an exception to this rule. If anything, it proves it. Simply due to its extensiveness, and the complexity (or stupidity depending on how you look at it) of Burroughs' writing, it took me a few months to hack through in my final year of high school. Even now, the glaring red spine amongst my other books manages to evoke my feelings of that time even now.
But by god it's worth it. There is nothing more frightening than Burroughs' prose. Everything he writes cannot be understood intellectually, but rather emotionally. You read his words, trying to make head or tail of what is printed in front of you, but that's not the point. You just have to let his ideas, his experiments simply wash over you and you'll understand them in due course.
A true shining light in literature.
Belive the myth.

R.A. Salvatore begins his second DemonWars trilogy with Ascendance, continuing the story of Pony, who is now Jilseponie Wyndon, the Baroness of Palmaris. This first book in the trilogy effectively sets up a new battle of good versus evil with plenty of action, political intrigue, and foes both old and new.
Good King Danube, ruler of the kingdom of Honce-the-Bear, is smitten with the lovely Baroness Jilseponie and seeks to have her as his wife against the wishes of his long-time mistress and much of the royal court. While Jilseponie does care for Danube, she still suffers from the loss of her husband, Elbryan the Nightbird, and their unborn child.
Unknown to Jilseponie, the child she thought dead was actually stolen and raised by elves. Despite the elves' purpose, the headstrong young Aydrian has plans of his own. Under their harsh guidance he has come to possess the fighting skill of his father and his mother's talent with gemstone magic. Every night a dark spirit whispers to him, guiding him. But is it the spirit of his father, the Nightbird, or is it something much more sinister?
As Aydrian escapes the elves, he finds an unlikely ally in Jilseponie's enemy, former Bishop De'Unnero, the weretiger. Together they set about a series of events that ensure that Pony's life and the peaceful kingdom of Honce-the-Bear will never be the same again.
Fans of the first DemonWars trilogy will be happy to see the continuation of Pony's story, and Ascendance effectively sets up the next trilogy with a compelling conflict not destined to be resolved until the final book. However, the villains are often more interesting than the hero, and Salvatore sometimes uses action to gloss over plotting that makes little sense. Despite its flaws, Ascendance has lively scenes, conflicted and interesting villains, and an exciting climax. Those new to DemonWars will want to begin with the first trilogy, starting with The Demon Awakens. --Kathie Huddleston

"Wild adventure, unique magic, stunning suspense, and unforgettable characters... A moving and complex tale of betrayal and redemption, intrigue and heartbreak. It is a novel not to be missed!"

"While there's still plenty of action in the book, there's a deeper side to Ascendance. Salvatore has achieved a solid balance between action and intrigue and woven them into a very satisfying story."

Salvatore Brings It!!.......2006-02-20
Ascendence is the first book of the second Demonwars Saga by R. A. Salvatore, and I must say that Salvatore knows what he is doing. It seems as if he has planned all of this from the beginning, but you can't even tell from the earlier novels, until it begins to fall together. This is very well written, easy to understand ( if you have read the others ). The new characters are well fleshed out before they become `important'. Everytime I pick up a Salvatore book, I have no doubt that I will enjoy it.
Salvatore has brought these characters through a lot, and he is definatly not finished. When reading the book before this (Mortalis) the reader can certainly tell that there is more to the story then they are getting, or to better word that - they know there is a future that must be written about after this tale. The Legacy of Two of our heros, and a HUGE mistake by the Elves is unfolding throughout Ascendence. Darkness is slowly creeping over the kingdom and its King, but no one truly knows the deepness that that darkness has - and even the reader is begging for what is occuring - not to occur. I hate to give away anything in a book ,as well the ones before it, and that is why this review is vague, but have no doubt - these are Salvatore's best!
If you have not already - go and pick them up and get started as soon as you can!
Great Way to Start it Off.......2005-11-11
This book was almost the perfect way to start off the second Demon Wars saga. The introduction of Aydrian and his development throughout the book is what makes this one great. I've always been drawn to the tweener villans and this book was no exception. After the first 150 pages or so, Aydrian had already become my favorite Demon Wars character.(Besides perhaps Elbryan)
Overall, another great job by Mr. Salvatore
Excellent!.......2003-09-13
Great beginning for the Second DemonWars saga! Beter than the previous installments! Salvatore ROCKS!
Deliciously disturbing.......2002-10-25
Though previous reviewers have expressed dissatisfaction over the triumphs evildoers enjoy in this series, and especially in this book.. I find it a refreshing change from the godlike Drizzt, who prevails against impossible things no matter what.
Plot style is akin in this series to George RR Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series in the sense that no one is safe, and anyone can die at the turn of any page. Holds suspense and does away with the more juvenile and hopeful ambience of the Forgotten Realm's Drizzt story, though I love those for their attributes as well.
Overall, I finish this book with a heavy heart for the characters that I grew to root for and their unimaginable pain and losses.. and a smirk for the villans who enjoy victories not often seen in this genre.
RAS builds the suspense.........................2002-08-15
I was wondering what could come next for this series after reading, Mortalis. The answer came in the form of Ascendance, by far the most suspenseful book in this series. I dub this series "The Folly of Lady Dasslerond" in my own mind. Decisions that were made over a decade ago are going to come back to change the fate of Corona. Throughout the book, you can feel the build up to the inevitable meeting of two people who have been deceived for years. The result is a climactic ending that leaves you eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series. Ascendance definitely ranks as one of the top books in this series, right next to Mortalis.

Brother Against Brother: Violence and Extremism in Israeli Politics from Altalena to the Rabin Assassination
ASIN: 019505086X |
Book Description
The Israeli people were stunned in 1984 when they learned of a barely averted plot to blow up five buses full of Arab passengers and an earlier attempt to blow up the Dome of the Rock, the holy Muslim mosque in Jerusalem. Even more shocking was the discovery that the terrorists in question
were not a bizarre radical sect, but members of the Gush Emunim, "the Block of the Faithful," a fundamentalist group committed to establishing Jewish settlements in the West Bank. For the first time, Israelis had to confront the fact that the rise of the Radical Right--and the religious
fundamentalism, extreme nationalism, and aggressive anti-Arab sentiment associated with it--was becoming a significant part of the nation's public life.
The first book to examine the origins, convictions, and political impact of the entire Radical Right, The Ascendance of Israel's Radical Right provides extraordinary insights into a political camp whose influence pervades Israeli politics and culture as well as Arab-Israeli relations. Sprinzak
traces the Zionist roots of the Radical Right and its reemergence following the Six-Day War and the Camp David accords. He examines the increasing control of the Radical Right over the settlements in the West Bank, its penetration of more moderate parties such as Likud and the National Religious
Party, and its reaction to the Intafada and the Persian Gulf Crisis. With in-depth portraits of the major movements--including the Tehiya, Tzomet, and Moledet parties, Gush Emunim, and the late Meir Kahane and his Kach party, and various underground or terrorist groups--he sheds new light on the
people and events which produce such intense fervor and on their political beliefs--for instance, the views that Arabs should be "transferred" from the occupied territories and that Israel was founded to establish a safe home for the Jews, not to protect the human rights of the Palestinians.
Sprinzak argues that approximately 20 to 25 percent of Israeli citizens share the convictions of the Radical Right, and that it is especially strong among the young. Indeed, as the message of this camp spreads throughout the country, Sprinzak predicts that the Radical Right's impact on Israeli
politics and national security will only increase.
As The Ascendance of Israel's Radical Right shows, the Radical Right is not--as is often thought--a small lunatic fringe, but a major school of Israeli Zionism, whose ideas are propagated by sophisticated and thoughtful leaders with large public appeal. Understanding what the Radical Right
has already achieved, and how it is currently shaping much of Israel's government agenda is important for every Israeli and Arab, as well as anyone who is concerned with the future of the Middle East.
Customer Reviews:
An interesting book, but more than a little biased.......2006-03-07
This book does supply us with some interesting material about the history and nature of some Israeli political groups. In addition, it discusses whether or not there is a risk that such groups will bring about a civil war in Israel (as if groups on the radical left constitute no such threat).
There is a big mix of attitudes that this book attacks. They include religious fanaticism, vigilantism, disrespect for civil law, conservative politics, willingness to support Jewish towns in the West Bank, cynicism, paranoia, opposition to left-wing intellectuals, anti-democratic tendencies, threats of ethnic cleansing of Arabs (there are even concerns that the presumably politically correct ethnic transfer of Jews might get some folks in the Israeli radical right to engage in violence), and Jewish threats to claim rights on the Temple Mount.
I think Sprinzak is often reasonable in his descriptions of the various groups. And sometimes he's reasonably fair in explaining their arguments. But I think he could have done a better job here. In addition, many of the people who support the right of Jews to live in the West Bank are not members of the political Right, and I think Sprinzak is weak at explaining their arguments. Finally, a big problem that Sprinzak practically ignores is the enormous threat from many very right-wing Arabs, in Israel, in the West Bank, and in neighboring nations. Arab aggression and lies, as well as international support for such aggression and lies, have a big effect on the attitudes of moderate and liberal Israelis. Sprinzak implies that the Israeli Right Wing uses Arab aggression as an excuse to pursue improper policies. But I think we ought to ask ourselves just what policies do make sense when dealing with Arab violence.

I simply could not put this book down once I started reading it. What a masterful use of a M. Night Shamaylan-like plot device. Mr. Steele drops subtle hints throughout the book about the true nature of his storyline, some I caught, but none prepared me for his "blow your mind" revelation in the last chapter. I can hardly wait to see what he comes up with for his next endeavor.

This is the most awesome book that I have read this year! What a creative mind! I don't know who Rob Steele is, but you can bet that I will be watching for his next creation! Fantastic!!!!!!

The last collection of the fiction and nonfiction of Alice Sheldon, a.k.a. James Tiptree Jr., is introduced by Jeffrey D. Smith, who tells the reader that, by its very nature, this collection is less a book by Tiptree than one about her. Although the essays and stories and articles here were assembled by Tiptree before her death, Smith has interleaved Tiptree's words with notes of his own, including quotes from private correspondence between the two. The results are revealing and surprisingly moving.
During the 10 years Sheldon wrote and interacted with others using the Tiptree persona, she became known as one of the finest SF writers in the world. Her short fiction (perhaps the most notable collection is Her Smoke Rose Up Forever) has always been more highly regarded than her full-length pieces, and it was during the years 1967 to 1976 that her most famous work, mainly in novella form, was conceived and written. Once the male Tiptree was exposed as the female Sheldon, her work--and her relationships with colleagues and fans and critics, previously conducted solely by mail--changed.
This change lies at the heart of the nonfiction and is the strength of the book. The breezy "Tiptree" letters and articles written from Central America depict a wiry older man who is nonetheless still active--vigorous enough to notice attractive women--making his way capably through a sometimes dangerous environment. It is fascinating to superimpose upon this picture that of the "real" writer--the small, rather vulnerable, middle-aged woman. It becomes clear that both pictures are true, and the reader is left desperately wanting to learn more about Sheldon and Tiptree and the strange intersection of truth, art, and lies that was their life. Until we get a full-scale Tiptree biography, however, this is all we have. --Luc Duplessis.

Insightful Plus Rare Stories.......2006-08-15
Jeff Smith has collected private letters and musings of the wildly imaginative Alice Sheldon. Included are some rarely found stories: "The Color of Neanderthal Eyes" and the amazing "Trey of Hearts". Tiptree was the best of the best, and Smith's collection throws some light onto this great writer's complex personality. It's a fine collection, a must-have for any Tiptree fan.
Meet Me at Infinity.......2005-02-15
James Tiptree, Jr. was my grandmother. This was the only one of her books that I have read so far in my life because I didn't realize that her real last name was Sheldon. I enjoyed it a lot because it is a great sci-fi.
SFRevu: Recommended, not your usual can of worms..........2000-03-18
Meet Me At Infinity by James Tiptree, JR. Hardcover - 352 pages (February 2000) Tor Books; ISBN: 0312858744 Who was the most convincing imposter in Science Fiction? Robert Heinlein's Double Star? Lois Bujold's "Admiral" Miles Naismith? Nope...it would be James Tiptree, Jr. aka Alice Sheldon, gender bender, Hugo winner, psychiatrist and onetime member of the CIA. Editor David Hartwell deserves our thanks for putting together this illuminating collection of stories previously published and not, and adding his insights into this important and interesting author's writing and life. It's not a polished group of stories, but a gathering of full pieces and fragments...all fascinating. As Harlan Ellison remarked; "Quite a different can of worms. It has something...I have no idea what." Highly recommend

Bold and honest; Truth in it's purest form.......2007-09-13
I adore all of Mary Baxter's books. All of them are so deeply saturated with raw honesty and truth, that her words seep into every crevice of the heart. I believe with my entire essence that Jesus Christ came to her; nobody could make this stuff up. After reading each one of her books, I am left pondering how very different her outlook must be toward this world and the next, in comparison to everyday people like you and I. After all, She has seen for a fact the reality of Hell; not only has she seen it, but she actually experienced it's horrors from the perspective of a lost soul. On the flip side, she has not only seen Heaven either, but also experienced it's marvelous and indescribable attributes from the perspective of an actual citizen! These books will forcefully open your spiritual eyes, and demand that your mind to look past the physical realm, and focus on that which we cannot see. The trickle effect will be that of spiritual sobriety and an ever growing relationship with our Savior, Jesus Christ. For He knew He had to let her experience the harsh boldness of all her visions, in order that she and all her readers would have a unstoppable, and unquenchable urge to spread His Holy Word.

My personal analization of this book is that it's wonderful with every descriptive remark made about supernatural beings called Angels. From the divine instructions from God to the way they encompass our every day lives here on earth they're wonderful. And yet because of my spiritual up-bring, I was reduced to tears in some passages of this book, with the terminology used younger readers can understand and will enjoy the basics that will relate also to the mind of a child.

Confused.......2007-02-14
I read this book after reading her book about Hell. The hell book was a bit unsettling. She describes and calls one area of hell"the fun center". HUH, also she states that the devil and the demons torment souls in hell.According to Pastor and author Erwin W. Lutzer a quote from his book "One Minute After You Die""Be assured of this:Neither the devil or his angels will torment people in hell.Satan and his demons will be among the tormented, they will not be the tormentors".(Revelation20:10)This is a direct opposition to the word of God...So her revelations are maybe not that divinely inspired. The book is nice and is comforting in some area's, but if she is off scripture I don't know what to really believe.I have all the books and am reading The Spirit Realm one. I guess we all should trust our own relationship with Christ.
The "Book of Joel" Visions and dreams.......2006-04-09
I want to answer the reviewer: "xmaggie mayx". First of all you are mistaken in scriptures that you say that all revelations of God ended with the "Book of Revelation". You are mistaken. Read the book of "Joel" in the Old Testament. The books talks about how God in the last days will pour out His Spirit upon all flesh. How the young will see visions and your old men dream dreams. He said that this will happen on both young and old. As you know we are living in the last days. Remember what the Lord said: who ever is not with me is against me. I think you are judging Mary K. Baxter out of your own opinion not with something that you can back up. Read the book of Joel and if you still disagree then you are not reading the same book I read or you are denying what the Holy Scriptures are saying. The Bible says also that in the last days there will be scoffers having a Religion but denying the power there off. I have read some of her books and the Holy Spirit bears witness with my spirit that what she has written is totally of God. You are entitle to your own opinion, but that doesn't make it the truth. You don't have to read and believe what she has written. Let other find for themselves their own opinions and come to their own conclusions and if they have the Holy Spirit inside of them, then the Holy Spirit will reveal to them weather is true or not.
WOW!.......2006-03-19
I've read every single christian book by Mary K. Baxter. She is by far the most captivating person ever. This book contains everything you wanted to know about angels from a Christ centered perspective. Everything she writes about she backs up with the scriptures. She is truly a woman of God. Her experiences are unbelievable, but true! If you buy any books this year, buy all of hers! I have purchased many of her books to hand out as gifts, and I've yet to receive a bad review. A Divine Revelation of Hell, A Divine Revelation of Heaven, A Divine Revelation of the Spiritual Realm, The Power of the Blood....they are all awesome!
