Rousing Action and a Complex Romantic Relationship Make This Series Special.......2007-05-01
In this fourth volume in the continuing fantasy saga of Del and Sandtiger, the partners set out across the sea to an island called Skandia which may hold the key to Tiger's heritage. But before they can even land on shore, they are captured by pirates led by a luscious female pirate named Prima who was banished from Skandian society for her lesbianism. Her first mate, Nikho, also possesses secrets that will profoundly affect Tiger's future. Prima and Nikho offer a bargain: freedom for Tiger and Del if Tiger will agree to pretend to be the long-long grandson of a dying aristocrat, the metri. Out of options, far from his Southron homeland, and out of money, Tiger reluctantly agrees to the deception. Tiger hopes that Skandia will provide answers to his identity and his strange affinity for magic. But before Tiger can win the freedom of Del and himself, he must face the power that he possesses which may lead him down a path to destruction. And somehow, Del and Tiger must redefine their relationship now that Del's song of vengeance is over. She must determine who she wants to be and how her life will be shaped either with or without Tiger. Roberson's love of these characters is apparent in every page; she draws both Del and Tiger with such subtlety and finesse that the reader never wants the book to end. The psychological complexity of Del and Tiger is one of the greatest pleasures of this series.
Sword-Dancer Convert.......2006-06-30
I began the Sword Dancer series just a couple of months ago, and bought all six volumes in one purchase. I had never read Jennifer Roberson novels until Sword-Dancer, but something about the story description on the back cover grabbed me. I had not read much in the Science Fantasy genre before, but I was ready to try something different. From that first volume, there have been no regrets. I love stories that take place in another time period, that involve cultural clashes, and if the choice of weapon to settle a disagreement is a sword, I'm in. This is no pirate story, although in Sword Born, Tiger and Del are captured by pirates and taken to what very well may be Tiger's homeland. What he discovers there about himself, in Skandi, strengthens his character, and entices the reader to want to know more about this SandTiger, not only why he was abandoned as an infant, but what his future holds for him, as much as Del does. Each book in the series is a stand alone story, but I recommend reading all of them. Jennifer Roberson appears to have done much research in creating the varied landscapes and locales in which Del and Tiger find themselves traversing. The story of the jivatmas (although in this volume the characters are without them, having lost them in the previous story), how they are created, how they bind to their maker, and how they relate to the one who wields them is quite unique. Swords with personality. The dialogue is real, sometimes funny, sometimes profound. I'm in the middle of her last book in the series, Sword Sworn. Ms. Roberson is an entertaining writer with heart and depth.
Sword-Born.......2003-01-17
All of the books in the Tiger and Del serires by Jennifer Roberson were incredible. I really enjoyed them and I would recomend them to anyone. Incredible.
The series is over?! Noooo!.......2002-07-09
I loved this book. I've been a fan of Jennifer Roberson's work for roughly a decade now.
I eagerly awaited the publication of this book and I wasn't disappointed.
The same, incorrigible Tiger and the same, irrepressible Del. Fabulous to visit their world again and their adventures from Skandi back to the South.
If you like adventure and escaping into rich, fantasy worlds, check out this entire series. I'm sad that the series has now come to an end.
Hoolies!.......2002-01-28
I really enjoyed this latest installment and eagerly await the "final?" installment. It comes out in February of this year. I really enjoyed Sword-Born because there was a different element of both Tiger and Del. Yes, I did miss some parts with Tiger and his sword, but I really felt sorry for Tiger. Poor Tiger. Great book and high recommended.

Great imagination, but ..........2003-06-13
Much of fantasy these days seem to be a rehash of what has gone before - a middle earth setting with good and evil wizards, gifted or clueless apprentices and varying doses of comedy. In this regard, De Larrabeiti's Borribles are a welcome relief. He has a wonderful imagination. His Borrible world and the three storylines are evidence of that.
Unfortunately he is not a very good storyteller. The Borrible stories are definitely for an adult audience (it is quite violent and morally ambiguous), but the author writes as though he intended it for children. The characters are one-dimensional and the plots are not convincing.
At best, the Borrible trilogy is a passable read. It is not a must-read. It may have a cult following, but it is far from a classic.
Awesome, and stands the test of time!!!.......2003-06-09
I was a major Borribles fan back in the mid 80's when I discovered these books in my school library, and they have always stuck in my mind, throughout my adult life. When I heard the books were being released in one volume, I rushed to the bookshop to buy it straight away!!! They are AWESOME!!! Yes, there is violence, but there is also so much bravery and a moral code the characters live by. These are books for anyone interested in a good read and something to think about afterwards too!!!
Reprinted at last! All three stories in one volume!.......2003-05-23
Michael DeLarrabeiti's "Borribles Trilogy" is something of a cult classic, especially among fans of fantasy-fare like "Watership Down" and "Lord of the Rings." For years his "Borribles" books have been out-of-print, leaving fans scrambling to find used copies wherever they could. Now, at long last and after some prodding from fans, they've been re-printed into this single volume.
The fantasy-inspired "heroes" of these stories are the Borribles: rebellious kids with pointy ears who live in London's deserted buildings and steal food to live. They fight with slingshots and have a culture and moral code all their own.
Far from the "goody-goody" stories that children are fed these days, the stories here are sometimes violent and morally ambiguous; definitely not for younger readers. As an example of DeLarrabeiti's condemnation for goody-goody children's stories, take for a start his farcical send-up of the "The Wombles" in the first tale of this trilogy. The Wombles of Wimbledon are re-cast as the "Rumbles of Rumbledom," and the sticks which the Wombles use to pick up litter on Wimbledon Common are actually (in DeLarrabeiti's book) weapons! The Rumbles are the mortal enemy of the Borribles, so our pointy-eared heroes strike out on a quest to murder the 8 most prominent Rumbles (Wombles). DeLarrabeiti is careful to give each Womble a different (and increasingly violent) end. If you're a fan of "The Wombles" (popular with children in the UK, especially in the 70s) you probably won't appreciate this book... but otherwise, I highly recommend it!
Fans of this fantasy-inspired cult classic, rejoice! The Borribles are back!
Customer Reviews:
a classic........2006-05-14
Wow. What a great, original book. I read if for the first time in the late 70s...when I was 12 years old. It was a stunning work then, and remains such. I didn't care for the sequels that I discovered and read several years later, though. I think the story works best as a stand-alone book.
Regardless, this is an awesome book. Do yourself a favor and read it!
Don't get caught!
Don't miss this book........2006-01-04
Like many here I read this book as a young man. Borribles are children that have chosen to run away from home and live on the street. As they live on the street their ears become pointed, which is why they wear hats to hide the fact from those that hunt borribles. Once you become a Borrible you will remain a kid forever...unless... Many of the cops that work the beat that Borribles can be found are on the look out for them. If a Borrible is captured, then the cops will clip his ears and he will turn back into a normal kid. People that were once Borribles become insanely jealous of those that still are Borribles and also hunt them. Couple this with extra large, intellegent sewer rats that are the sworn enemy of Borribles, and you can see that a Borribles existance is a bit dicey. As a Borrible you can't get a job, so they live by their wits, stealing their supper and defending themselves with thier trusty slingshots. They live in small tribes / street gangs throughout London scratching a rough existance from the sewers and back alleys. Forming alliances and rivalries with each other as well.
The first book of Borribles, a Borrible finds a scout Rumble (really big sewer rat) and his tribe elects to seek out the rumbles and disrupt any plans of attack they may have. Think about a tiny Delta Force unit with sling shots and a candy fixation. Gritty and Tough as the Outsiders with a little Peter Pan thrown in, a great read. I highly recommend this book.
Those 'Orrible Borribles.......2005-12-08
If it weren't for their pointed ears (which you should know are always well-disguised under a woollen hat whenever they're out in public), it would be very difficult to distinguish a Borrible from a normal human child. They're generally "very skinny", "pretty tough looking", and "always scruffy". Sums up this generation perfectly, don't you think? ;-)
Anyhow, the story itself begins when an enemy Rumble is spotted on Borrible territory by two lookouts, Knocker and Lightfoot. The Borrible instantly smell trouble and in no time at all have assembled a crack team of adventurers to assassinate the Rumble High Command. Naturally of course, not all goes according to plan...
From page one, Michael de Larrabeiti's 'The Borribles' is brimming with action and adventure of epic proportions. It isn't perfect, but whether you're young or simply young at heart, there's something here to be enjoyed.
Highly recommended!
Blast from the past.......2003-03-01
This book brings back a lot of memories. I read it in my teen years, and it reminds me of one of my English teachers who took the trouble to track down and buy me one of the sequels. That was an act of kindness I never forgot, and why I think teachers are such marvellous people to this day (I had excellent ones.)
The basic premise is of children who run away from home to an underworld/sub-world (yes, it's a kind of urban fantasy). The new arrivals have no name until they can prove they deserve one, and they can earn several. I don't remember the plot, but I know that the tribal/merit-based culture and the way they interacted was really interesting to me, and I'm getting ready to track down a copy for my niece who will soon be of an age to enjoy this one.
Finally available again!!.......2003-02-07
From reading the other reviews here, I can see I'm not the only person who looks at this trilogy as a "cult favorite." It seems that the Borribles definitely have a devout following!
Good news, friends! A publisher in the UK has recently re-printed all three books, in a single volume. These stories are available again at last! Click on "United Kingdom" at the bottom of your screen, and have "The Borribles Trilogy" shipped to you from Amazon.com in Great Britain.

A Subversive Cult Classic.......2003-07-10
The Borribles is a truly subversive piece of children's literature. The trilogy takes all the epic fantasy elements of Tolkien: adventure, clansmanship, codes of honour, and inverts them against a backdrop of urban decay and social entropy. Borribles are children who run away from home, scavenge for food and would live forever were it not for the adult world's constant attempts at dragging them jealously back into the madness of workaday mortality. De Larrabeiti is obsessed with the geography of a London that he depicts as a city of near total squalor. The Thames is black and cholera ridden, warehouses crumble, schools lay in ruins and mindless commuters shuffle blindly to work each morning whilst the wily Borribles steal fruit from markets, carry catapults for protection and attempt to live outside of the rat-race. As the story progresses, so does Larrabeiti's vision, shifting from the relatively whimsical sparring of rival subhuman groups -Borribles versus the strange, rat-like Rumbles- to a more serious depiction of a highly moral youth culture where money is an evil temptation, corroding the Borribles' scruffy, communal utopia, forcing them out of hiding and into battle with the adult world; a world teaming with sadistic policemen, hysterical civilians and degenerate alcoholic child-snatchers. A world where the only friendly adults are tramps, wasters and circus freaks. Not hard to see then, why the books never made it onto school reading lists. Yet the characterisation is mature and moving, the plotline ingenious and thrilling. But perhaps most impressive of all is the whole Borrible mythology: a coherent world complete with proverbs, songs, rules, lore and ethical codes, thriving beneath the grimy, menacing mess of modern London. Arguably one of the greatest works of children's fiction and almost certainly the darkest and most morally ambiguous, The Borribles is a fantasy saga ripe for comic-strip and film adaptation, yet it appears to have slipped into near obscurity...
The Borribles Trilogy.......2002-06-25
It's really weird ... for the last few months, I'd been remembering bits of the "Borribles" though I couldn't remember what they were actually called or who the author was. It was driving me mad, I remembered reading these 2 books (the first 2 in the trilogy) about fifteen years ago, and all of a sudden the stories came back to me and I couldn't remember enough to find out who had written them or what they were called ... after months of trawling through second hand bookshops and Amazon, I walked into the local shop and discovered - to my immense and somewhat stunned delight - that all 3 had been reprinted in one volume. Needless to say I purchased it on the spot .. about a week ago. I've now reread it all and THEY'RE AMAZING. Forget the lord of the rings, harry potter, forget dickens, forget shakespere, Mr de Larrabeiti is a writer of no small talent. Across the Dark Metropolis is the conclusion of the trilogy and better than the first two... not that they were bad, at all. Each just gets better. I'd almost wish for a fourth but I think that would spoil the beauty of them, one follows so well onto the next, yet each is stand alone. I can't praise them highly enough: I've got a stack of books, historical, fantasy, murder mystery, all waiting to be read, and they jumped the whole queue. My memories of these books weren't wrong. If you haven't already, go out and buy them yourself.
Steve
AT LAST! GOOD NEWS.......2001-09-27
According to the Borrible website, The Borrible Trilogy is to be reprinted in the summer of 2002! The fans have been heard!!
THANK YOU MWHARM FOR THE INFO.NOW WHAT CAN WE DO?.......1999-08-06
anyone who reads the reviews of de Larrabeiti's books can see how much they are loved. Instead of just lamenting the fact that he is out of print, it is time for some action. Does anyone have an address we can write to? Who was de larrabeiti's agent? Who was his primary publisher? Does de Larrabeiti know how much we love his books, and how much we would love to see sequels? Even if he no longer wishes to write, these should still be in print. These are true classics, and we should start some form of lobbying with publishers. Any ideas? ADDENDUM: 11/04-He is back in print! Buy! Read! These are wonderful!
Here's what I read about him..........1999-07-28
Michael De Larrabeiti (1937): British author: * the "Borribles" series of elf-like folks in a dark London: * The Borribles [1976] * The Borribles Go For Broke [1981] * The Borribles: Across the Dark Metropolis [1986] * The Provencal Tales [1988] story collection (according to "The Encyclopedia of Fantasy", John Clute & John Grant, St.Martin's, 1997, p.263)
Since he was born in 1937, its unlikely we'll see any more books...

Book Description
What is a Borrible?
Borribles are runaways who dwell in the shadows of London. Apart from their pointed ears, they look just like ordinary children. They live by their wits and a few Borrible laws—the chief one being, Don’t Get Caught! The Borribles are outcasts—but they wouldn’t have it any other way….
The Borribles: Across the Dark Metropolis
Battersea was no longer safe for a Borrible. The Special Borrible Group—a secret section of the London police dedicated to finding Borribles and clipping their ears—was closing in. Driven on by the fanatical Inspector Sussworth, the SBG was determined to wipe them out once and for all. It was time to break out, escort Sam the horse to safety in Neasden, then return to the old Borrible life of independence and freedom. So began a perilous trek across the dark metropolis—a journey that would test the courage and cunning of the Adventurers to the limits.

Mud, Blood, Wendles and Glory - Superb!.......2000-08-10
The Borribles is one of the best stories I have ever read, but The Borribles Go For Broke matches the standard. Discovering that Sam the horse is still alive, the adventurers seek him and are lured into danger, both by the SBG (Special Borrible Group) police and one of the most cunning of their own tribe, Spiff. The borribles fling themselves into, and extricate themselves from, many a mess, but end up in the worst of all possible worlds - Wendle territory, deep beneath the streets - Wandsworth (where the best borribles come from). Here are scenes to make a reader weep and shudder with awe. If you have not been at the bottom of the Wandle river in a shifting tunnel of mud, or watched Spiff fight with a spade honed razor sharp, then you have missed some of the best Borrible action that currently exists. If you can get hold of this book, do so- this book is worth every moment you will spend glued to its pages.
A great Fantasy novel that can be relived over and over!!.......1999-08-11
I read this book close to 20 years ago and it stands as one of my all time favorites! Some of the characters reveal some of the same personality traits as some of the friends that I shared the book with.
A great book for readers new to the Fantasy genre.......1999-07-17
My Grade 6 teacher read us this book and I still remember travelling along with the borribles, that was 20 years ago. If a book can stay in your memory for that long it's gotta be good

These books are some of the few books i've enjoyed reading more than once :o). The author has an incredible sense of charater, that gives his books a life of thier own. Everytime I read these books I feel like i've been there and lived the adventure with them. I agree with the rest. What ever happened to the Author?

When things go terribly wrong and they end up in Wendle territory, warrior borribles that would love to kill them, their only hope is to trust a borrible that was a Wendle. Will the borribles ever make it out alive??
This book was a very good book. It was really tense for me and there was always action so it kept me reading. There was a big plot that was unraveling and I tried to guess it but it was very hard because of dips and turns. The author wrote very well and it captured my imagination. I wish to see pictures of the borribles because it is hard to imagine them.

The Future
Don't Get Caught...
In the shadowy, mythic world in which they dwell, an honorable name is the only glory, the blood of battle the only way to come by it. This is the world of the Borribles, who might (but only in darkness, and only for a moment) resemble deadly children, and of the the Rumbles, their enemies to the death.
Product Description
A controversial issue of public debate during the recent years, esotericism can be described as the search for an absolute but hidden knowledge that people claim to access through mystical vision, the mediation of higher beings, or personal experience. In Western cultural history these claims often led to conflicts with more established forms of scriptural religions and with reductionist interpretations in science and philosophy.
In this highly readable book Kocku von Stuckrad describes the impact of esoteric currents from antiquity to the present and pursues the continuities and breaks in a tradition that significantly influenced the formation of modernity. When Hermes Trismegistos reveals wisdom of an absolute quality, the unveiling of hidden knowledge in Jewish Kabbalah is transformed by Christians, Renaissance thinkers speak of an 'eternal philosophy,' or when in the 'New Age' people try to get in contact with a source of superior understanding-in every case the dynamic of concealment and revelation is at stake and the ways this hidden knowledge can be made accessible for human curiosity.
