Book Description
The Washington Post Book World has written that Fernando Pessoa was "Portugal's greatest writer of the twentieth century [though] some critics would even leave off that last qualifying phrase" and "one of the most appealing European modernists, equal in command and range to his contemporaries Rilke and Mandelstam." The Selected Prose of Fernando Pessoa, a Los Angeles Times Best Book of 2001, spans playful philosophical inquiry, Platonic dialogue, and bitter intellectual scrapping between Pessoa and his many literary alter egos ("heteronyms"). The heteronyms launch movements and write manifestos, and one of them attempts to break up Pessoa's only known romantic relationship. Also included is a generous selection from Pessoa's masterpiece, The Book of Disquiet, freshly translated by Richard Zenith from newly discovered materials. The Selected Prose of Fernando Pessoa is an important record of a crucial part of the literary canon. "Zenith's selection is beautifully translated, compact while appropriately diverse." -- Benjamin Kunkel, Los Angeles Times "[Pessoa] is one of those writers as addictive, and endearing, as Borges and Calvino." -- Michael Dirda, The Washington Post Book World

Notes of a genius.......2001-11-08
This book is full of genius and madness, which are nearly indistinguishable from one another. Like Kafka, Pessoa stands above his peers for his profound sense of humanity. He is also as singular as Kafka. Pessoa is a mystery, and his notes and letters further illustrate this. I am sorry that he died before the world would honor him as one of the Twentieth Century's greatest writers. However, Pessoa was well aware of his genius and the admiration of the world would have done nothing to convince him of his worth. He was already convinced!
Pessoa published little during his lifetime, but it was because he never submitted much of his work for publication. Apparetnly, the Portugese publishers still haven't published all of his works, either, and that is a shame.
One thing that stands out about this book is that Pessoa does not engage in any of the posturing that one might find in the works of other writers convinced of their genius. One senses that Pessoa considers his genius not in boast, but as if it were as unavoidable as his own face. It is fact to him; he cannot change it. His is a sad genius, not a violent genius. But do not pity him; he knew what he was doing. Pessoa was a man who knew what it meant to be a writer (that is, a perpetual other, an individual who can describe the world because he stands apart from it).
Pessoa is a wonder. Buy this book. I only wish it were the "Collected Prose" of Pessoa rather than the "Selected Prose."
One more note, if you are interested in Portugese literature you must read Anotnio Lobo Antunes, also published by Grove Press. A few of his works have been also translated by Richard Zenith (to whom I am grateful for his translations). If you like madness, madness in the Faulknerian sense, then you will love Lobo Antunes.
An indispensable addition to the Pessoa oeuvre in English.......2001-08-24
Richard Zenith is my favourite translator of Pessoa; in this collection, he brings the insight and perspective he brought to his transcendant "Pessoa & Co." and "Book of Disquietude." The puckish nature of Pessoa's heteronym project is put into sharp relief: those who know only Pessoa/Soares may have thought the subsumption into heteronymology a sad affaire.
This collection complicates and deepens that perspective, with selections ranging from the whole of Pessoa's life, from the childhood Alexander Search to the elderly and Stoic Baron of Tieve, yet remains (as Pessoa remains) wholly delightful and charming. A Maria José even appears, in a letter "From A Hunchbacked Girl To A Metalworker" (a heartbreaking letter, I may add). Pessoa's possibly affected eccentricities is in full evidence here: witness the "Riddle Of The Stars," a kind of proto-"Changing Light At Sandover," wherein Pessoa receives otherworldly communiqués via automatic writing and the spirits exhort him repeatedly to lose his virginity. Other kicks: his "static drama" "O Marinhero" and Alvaro de Campos' "Ultimatum," where he personally attacks everyone responsible for World War I (and I mean, _everyone_).
Zenith's notes are indispensable (though he peculiarly abandons his "Disquietude" for "Disquiet," and chooses American English as his idiom). All in all, a welcome addition to the Pessoan archive in English, and a breathtaking array of further complications.
Book Description
"After looking for him in the poems, we search for him in the prose. The pursuit of the Other in Pessoa's work is never-ending," writes Edwin Honig. Essential to understanding the great Portuguese poet are the essays written about (and by) his heteronyms-Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, and Alvaro de Campos-the several pseudonyms under which he wrote an extraordinary body of poetry. In Always Astonished, Pessoa and his several selves debate and discuss one another's work, revealing how Portuguese modernism was shaped. Fernando Pessoa is one of the great voices of twentieth-century literature, and these manifestos, letters, journal notes, and critical essays range through aesthetics, lyric poetry, dramatic and visual arts, and the psychology of the artist. He gives us, too, a singularly heterodox political position in his strange work of fiction, The Anarchist Banker.

A Must Read!.......2007-09-17
The Blue Djinn of Babylon is mouth-watering continuation of the Children of Lamp series. The twins learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of their djinn powers and discover some fascinating facts about their mom. Not to mention twins get separated by the Blue Djinn and have some wild hair-raising adventures trying to find each other. I'd tell you more, but its more fun to read the book! Let your imagination do the walking.
The Blue Djinn is so cool!.......2007-05-12
Even though I am definitely not a young teen (unless 65 qualifies) I love the Children of the Lamp series. One of my granddaughters bought the first book at a school book fair; I had run out of my own reading material for relaxation; and, as they say, the rest is history.
After I finished The Akhenaten Adventure, I bought the Blue Djinn and Cobra King of Kathmandu. I am awaiting the next three books as much as my granddaughter.

During the tournament the Blue Djinn assistant tells John and Uncle Nimrod that Solomon's Grimoire was stolen by himself accidentally! Now they have to arrange a meeting to get the book back. But little do they know it will put the twins in danger!

Djinn Adventure by MT from North Boulevard.......2006-12-13
The Children of the Lamp Series, The Blue Djinn of Babylon is written by a talented and excellent author, P.B. Kerr. He has written two books for this series, and his second book was an exciting story to read. I definitely think this book deserves a rating of five stars because it was a fabulous book to read.
This story is about two young djinn, or genies, named John and Philippa Gaunt. They are captured by a worker for the most powerful djinn in the universe. This djinn is known as the Blue Djinn, which most people call her. She is trying to capture Philippa so she can be the next Blue Djinn. John soon escapes, and travels hoping to find his sister. He journeys all over with only the help of a young driver, Darius, his Uncle Nimrod's one arm butler, Groanin, and two transformed humans, Alan and Neil, who are John and Philippa's uncles, which are now dogs. (John and Philippa's mother, who is a former djinn, transformed them after they tried to murder her husband, their brother.) While Philippa is at the Blue Djinn's castle, she has problems of her own. She does not want to become the next Blue Djinn. Philippa does not want this to happen because she does not like the hard soul of the former Blue Djinn. And now she finds out that the Blue Djinn is her grandmother, which she is astonished to hear. John still travels and soon finds Philippa and rescues her.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy and adventure. The first book in this series is also a very good story as well. This book's title is Children of the Lamp, The Akhenaten Adventure.

Thirty original stories-each inspired by a Janis Ian song-from some of the biggest names in science fiction and fantasy, including: Tad Williams, Harry Turtledove, Orson Scott Card, Joe Haldeman, John Varley, Mercedes Lackey, Judith Tarr, Janis Ian, and others.

An unexpected, wonderful collection of original stories.......2003-11-15
Stars deserves ongoing mention as an extraordinary collection of science fiction inspired by the music of folk singer Janis Ian. Janis invited respected authors in the genre to contribute works influenced by her songs: the result is an unexpected, wonderful collection of original stories - based on her music, but no prior familiarity with Ian is required in order to enjoy these varied tales.
Worth every penny!.......2003-10-15
Having heard some of Janis Ians work I thought it interesting that people would be so drawn to her lyrics to write stories about them. I bought the book not knowing what to expect and have been thrilled with what I read. I really think it was worth every penny and made sitting on the beach in Hawaii recently even better than I ever thought it could be!
Amazing, just amazing!.......2003-09-17
The list of authors is exemplary. The list of songs is exemplary. That Janis Ian and Mike Resnick could bring together authors of this stature, meld them to the songs, and come up with 30 astonishing stories based on those songs, is more than I can handle! I read it cover to cover, and plan to read it again and again. Robert Silverberg's "Legends" was pretty terrific, but it didn't sit on the cutting edge. It was too safe. This is the closest thing to "Dangerous Visions" I've found. A "Dangerous Visions" for my own generation!
made a believer outa me!.......2003-09-14
I have never been much of a fan of SciFi, nor a reader of short stories. I am, however a fan of Janis Ians Music. So buying this book was a must for me.
However, I felt it would be very easy to be dissapointed with what other writers did with the songs I love so much. I need not have worried. The stories are all very different in how I see the songs, but often add interesting insights that I would never have thought of.
Most of the stories have a strong moral base, and provoke thought about the world we live in.
I enjoyed this book from cover to cover......and can't wait to explore the writing of the various authors.
Favourite Story......"EJ-ES", based on "Jesse", buttomorrow, could be another one!!!

Book Description
Jesus’ remarkable and rather puzzling statements from the Gospel of Thomas, considered “secret sayings,” have suffered centuries of misinterpretation, reinforcing a skewed view of both Christianity and Jesus himself. In Christian Zen, noted scholar Robert Powell deciphers their true meaning and shows how they mirror Zen philosophy. His commentaries explain that the sayings embody the timeless teaching of advaita, the esoteric expression of the inner meaning of all the great religions.

Jesus teaches Zen.......2006-09-17
This very small book lists verses of the gospel of Thomas on each page and then gives the authors comments about what he believes they mean. The authors opinion is that in the gospel of Thomas Jesus is teaching nonduality and how to discover the true Self and over come the illusion of separation and individual ego by living truly in the eternal Now.I agree with the authors opinion completely and believe this book is closer to the true esoteric teachings of Jesus than the Bible. This is a perfect book for beginners that are searching for truth or studing Zen.

More insights re: The Dalai Lama.......2007-01-06
This year I've been learning more about Buddhism and have enjoyed reading the teachings of the Dalai Lama in several texts. The Good Heart offered interesting comparisons of the Christian and Buddhist perspectives, reflecting on specific Christian Gospel teachings. As a Christian who wants to learn more about the breadth of God's world and the people in it, I found the commentaries thought-provoking. Christians can learn much from the Dalai Lama about respecting others' points of view, and about what it means to be kind and compassionate toward others.
Be advised the book is the commentary and dialogue from the 1994 John Main Seminar, "an annual international spiritual event held in honor of the Benedictine monk John Main, whom Father Bede Griffiths once called the most important spiritual guide in the church today." pg 1
"In his opening remards, the Dalai Lama spoke about the importance of all the different forms of dialogue being practiced today between religions. He affirmed the importance of scholarly dialogue. But he also said that he felt the most important and--to use a characteristic term for a Buddhist--the most effective dialogue was not intellectual exchange, but a conversation between sincere practitioners from the position of their own faiths, a conversation that arises from a sharing of their respective practices." p5
Unbelievably sentimentalistic book!.......2007-01-05
OK. This book was obviously written from the perspective "Thou art holier than I". At times it gets so sugary it makes me want to gag...Everybody is complimenting the Dalai Lama right and left, but unfortunately, despite the Dalai Lama's warning that one should not try to put a yaks's head on a sheep body, these Christian morons consistently fail to ask tough questions, tripping on themselves to avoid pointing out insurmountable divergencies between the two traditions. The Dalai Lama basically uses the Gospel texts to teach Buddhist doctrine, a strategy the Jesuits used to be masters at (in reverse). He is charming, profound as usual, but obviously totally unaware of the Christian tradition. So, next time, instead of getting into the business of "uh-oh-ah, please teach us how to read OUR OWN TEXTS!", I would like to see Dalai Lama's interlocutors do their job in a hopefully more critical and challenging way. And next time, please, oh, please, choose better texts!!!!
I love it.......2006-11-13
It is always gratifying (to me anyway) to see how others see Christianity. I feel the Dalai Lama (as well as one or two other "non-christian" authors) capture the spirit of Christianity and truly understand it. This was a wonderful read and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

A Review by Saint Cool.......2006-02-20
One last note...Resistance at all costs...is of upmost importance for the very sake of your sanity. Do not become assimilated! We are all of devine nature(all but Borgs)...think about that...a creation of divenity...we are all devine of nature..how else could we be alive, conscience, aware of these cool and amazing words you are reading here...to realize such..and act in accordance w/the will of God/Universe...this is the tricky part for so many. But it works. this truth has been around since the ancients..before them even...why..before time itself. God is eternal(you too mortal! ;-) Not as cool as God though...and a bit confused, but anyways...there's a purpose for us all, even worms...most good one..most excellent purpose! It is old school time ladies and gents/boyz and girlfriends...but you can have fun...don't worry. We all have a reason for our life here on this ball in outerspace. Muahhahaha. Anyways...For an eternal all knowing God/creator...one would presume things are pretty well thought out here...for real. ;-) Practice "good karma" it is the best way to fly. Destiny is for real.."good"or "bad"...but can be changed, focus on the real..you know what it is...and and faith in God is for real, and there is no denying even if you do...God is not some spirit punk out to punish you..although you may deserve it and God has not choice...I believe every devine decision is ultimiately for the may lay down some hurt on your ass...but you will be better off in the long run, may desrvee it, and become stronger, wiser...So you earth bound mortals..it is a magic thing...not about stocks and bonds...take a guess...its inside you...provided by God. living it...of course...one can never be overly cautious...especially of the Borg! Take no fear thoug "God makes everything right in the End"...PEACE !:-)

An Excellent Alternative "Foundation" for Christianity.......2007-09-16
This is an excellent walk through a different way to view the teachings of Jesus.
People who are seeking stronger and greater connection with G-d, as well as greater understanding of what Jesus taught, will generally like this book. Someone who generally is happy with the "notion" of "church" and involvement with religious organizations, but who is just not sure about some of the teachings, would fall into the category that would probably enjoy this book quite a bit.
On the other hand, people who are very happy with the Orthodox definition of Christianity, and the tightly defined view of what Jesus meant in His teachings, will find the book threatening to their beliefs. If a person in this category is open to having their beliefs challenged a bit, this would be a good book to read, because the author does not challenge in a way that diminishes Orthodoxy in my opinion, but simply presents a very plausible and likely alternative that may very well allow the Orthodox reader to begin to see deeper and more meaningful Truth in the teachings that form the basis of their religion.
A new way to understand the teachings of Jesus........2006-12-23
I believe this book is a must read for everyone in search of the true Jesus. The author explains what the true meaning of Jesus's teachings could have been. The parables of Jesus take on different meanings when you filter them through the perspective of a Zen Buddhist instead of a Fundamentalist Christian. Hell could be a place we go mentally as a state of mind instead of a hot place our soul goes through disbelief and bad conduct in the body. The beautitudes were about over coming the false self not pleasing a God. The book confirmed some of my long term belefs that Jesus was one of a line of spiritual masters who was made into a God by the Catholic Church. Read this book with an open mind, it will be beneficial in your understanding of Jesus the teacher.
fabulous.......2006-07-09
this book is a beautiful exploration of Christs true teachings.
you will love it. very powerful and easy to understand. enjoy!
The Future of Christianity .......2006-06-30
It was the strangest thing. As I read, Gospel passages kept popping into my head. When I read what came next, the author chose the same aforementioned passages. As a perpetual "beginner" at zazen, I would have liked to have someday written this book, for it tells it as I presently see it, and , I believe, how many more Christians are seeing "IT". As we grow in our assimilation of the "Good News" we discover that this "news" as it comes in the Gospel of Mark: "Metanoiesete[Change the way you think about reality] for the Kingdom of Heaven is within you".
This book is as helpful as Suzuki's "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind".
As scientific knowledge grows, we have an increasing sense that the "Tao" of it all needs neither time nor space in which to exist, but rather remains inconceivable within us.
Someone once related to me the motto for zen should be,
"NOW, HERE, THIS!" I would add a fourth, "WITHIN!"
To add to this, the Christian belief that the "Inconceivable" has conceived of Tao's Very Self within a young Jewish girl so as to reveal Tao in human signs, is just impossible to believe without overflowing with gratitude, joy and love.
A great book and I heartily recommemnd it.
A Disappointing Attempt.......2003-06-10
The impression that the book presents on its cover is that it will examine the teachings of Jesus and how they resemble Zen ideas. Mr. Leong makes a 232-page attempt to do that. In the introduction, he exhorts the reader to be opened-minded, not restricted to the reader's past religious lessons, and look at the teachings of Jesus as if for the first time. After asking the reader to do so, Mr. Leong does just the opposite. He reads the scriptures with such a background of Zen thinking that he oftentimes misses their very obvious meanings. Anyone reading the Gospels for the first time would scarcely come to the same conclusions as Mr. Leong. He quotes several authors to try to add validity to his points. One of the more often quoted is C. S. Lewis. I have read all of Lewis's quoted works, and found Mr. Leong to even have misinterpreted these at times. Mr. Leong appears to have tried too hard to force Zen upon Jesus. I found myself frustrated at his lack of seeing the obvious meanings while trying to interpret the teachings of Jesus in a Zen paradigm.
