Customer Reviews:
Cisco perfects his Otherworld.......2006-05-04
I've already written a review for The Divinity Student, so the majority of this will focus on the second half of The San Veneficio Canon. In The Divinity Student, you are introduced to an enigmatic character whose insides are stuffed with papers and he lives off of formaldehyde. His task is to create a lexicon of lost words. In order to do this, he must slip into other realms of consciousness and (literally) probe the brains of the deceased. The cast of characters he encounters are wildly imaginative. Cisco really pulls you into the world of San Veneficio.
In The Golem (the second half of The San Veneficio Canon), the Divinity Student returns, but with a different purpose this time. Unable to go into the underworld himself, he creates a copy of himself, The Golem, and proceeds to chase after the woman he loves to marry her. Cisco creates a dazzling and overwhelming underworld. The pace of the novel, once the chase begins, is pretty fast paced.
Michael Cisco has been hailed by many authors as a Gothic revivalist of sorts. The worlds and characters he creates are simply unparalleled. If you're a fan of decadent literature, Thomas Ligotti, Jeff Vandermeer or Neil Gaiman, this book is for you.

Book Description
The Underdark. A place of brooding darkness, where no shadows exist, and where Drizzt Do'Urden does not wish to go. The noble dark elf must return there, though, must go back to find his friends in the gnome city of Blingdenstone, and on to Menzoberranzan, the city of drow. Only then can Drizzt discern what perils might reach out from that dark place to threaten his friends in Mithril Hall.
Customer Reviews:
Salvatore gives us another great book!.......2007-01-14
After reading The Legacy, the first book in the Paths of Darkness Series, I immediately picked up Starless Night. We go back to the Underdark and Menzoberranzan for another Drow-filled adventure full of adventure, magic, and all of Salvatore's signature elements. We get a lot more of House Baenre and we meet the ruling houses of Menzoberranzan. The book is a great read and you'll be wanting to pick up the next book, Seige of Darkness, right away.
Artemis Entreri just won't die.......2007-01-02
Starless Night, book 8 chronologically in the Drizzt series, shows the main characters still suffering from the death of one of their own in the previous book. Because of this guilt, Drizzt ventures back to the underground world of Menzoberranzan, to determine the true drow threat himself. Catti-brie follows, once she finds that he has slipped out on his own.
I thoroughly enjoyed the character development of Jarlaxle, the mercenary drow, and it was great to see a small glimpse of strong Belwar again. My only problem with this series is that characters just won't stay dead once killed (or twice killed!), as Artemis Entreri shows up again. Mr. Salvatore keeps the readers guessing that Entreri and perhaps Jarlaxle are not as evil as they seem.
As with the three initial books in the series, the drow homeland is well described, as are the political machinations that keep the drow world in check.
Not as good as the first three (which are classics), but moves the character development forward and brings Jarlaxle, a very interesting character, to the fore.
Up to the 5-star standard of Salvatore's Drizzt books........2006-09-18
As usual, excitment and intense action dominate this installment in the Legend of Drizzt. As Drizzt and Cattie-Brie journey to the city of dark elves, they face impossible odds time and again. Without unexpected help from old enemies, the friends would be doomed to a gruesome death at the feet of Lloth. A nice change of scenery from the past few books is found here, with nearly the whole book taking place in the Underdark. The characters continue to be brilliantly developed, particulary Jarlaxle and Entreri, and the overall plot of the series is progressed, with some big events in the making.
If you've enjoyed the other Drizzt books, you'll enjoy this one too. I'd say it is one of the best I've read. Looking forward to reading the rest of Legacy of the Drow.
The Unlikely Emancipation of Cattie-Brie.......2006-07-19
3.5 stars I round down.
To start the book our main viewpoint characters are all mopy and depressed over the death of Wulfgar. Bruenor is now in need of some therapy as he has allowed himself to become listless and disengaged to the point he is not leading his people. Cattie-Brie is depressed but no more so than you would expect and the noble Drizz't is so depressed he decides to go on what is more or less a suicide walkabout to say goodbye to his underdark friends and sacrifice himself in the hope this will keep his friends safe. Or at least the text strongly points to that subconscious belief.
So Drizz't sneaks off to the underdark which of course sets Cattie Brie in motion to follow him and causes much mayhem amongst the drow when he encounters them. We also have the return of Artemis Entreri and Jarlaxle to heighten the tension and the treachery of the plot as Cattie and Artemis work together to save Drizz't. Jarlaxle as always waits and plays each side for his own gain.
At this point we have some wonderful fight scenes and it is a lot of fun, however we have the not unbelievable, but certainly hurried, metamorphosis of Cattie-Brie from strong but minor supporting character to major hero as she blasts legions of drow away with her heat-seeking bow of infinite ammunition. To be honest, her real courage was in facing Bruenor and following Drizz't.
We also have the incredibly intelligent drow acting like stormtroopers from Star Wars. Despite their massive numbers they can't stop the recently tortured to near death Drizz't, Cattie-Brie, Artemis and that poor cat Guenhyvar, summoned to take damage while they escape.
However despite those glaring problems, the book really actually is a fun read. Lightweight, but fun, and the battle scenes are engaging while you read them. Our heroes are just way too overpowered with trinkets now. Still though, the underdark and its evil machinations always provide for an enjoyable visit.
Finally a new book cover.......2006-07-16
So far i have been a loyal fan of Salvatore's work. I have, in fact, read every book of the Drizzt series from the first to the most recent several times, and Starless Night, I think, is one of the best ones. Salvatore places some of our favorite, non-drow characters into the drow's infamous home city. It was a nice change of setting for the reader as well as the characters, especially since I love reading about the extraordinary and complex city of Menzoberanzan. As always, Salvatore was excellent in his battle scenes and small exepected twists that turn the whole storyline around. I think this is one of the better books to the series, but will always belive that Homeland is the best yet.
What I liked best...beyond the great battle scenes was probably the development of the villains in this book. Artemis Entreri is definitely only a shadow of his former self. He is for the first time is in his life lost. He has lost his confidence and in the presence of the drow feels true fear and even pities himself, not what you expect from the wily assassin. But, beyond Entreri is the new power behind the scenes, Jarlaxle. He is truly the most cunning and intelligent villain I have ever read about. Watching Jarlaxle manipulate the other characters in the book like pawns really gives me chills. I love these characters and can't wait for more.
To end, if you have enjoyed the Drizzt series so far this one will not disappoint you. If you haven't read the books before this one...you can probably get by just fine, but you won't truly enjoy it. At least read the Dark Elf Trilogy and The Legacy before this novel.

Book Description
This completely updated and revised Second Edition of the popular Workbook of Atmospheric Dispersion Estimates provides an important foundation for understanding dispersion modeling as it is being practiced today. The book and accompanying diskette will help you determine the impacts of various sources of air pollution, including the effects of wind and turbulence, plume rise, and Gaussian dispersion and its limitations. Information is shown in summary graphs as well as in equations. The programs included on the diskette allow you to "get the feel" for the results you'll obtain through the input of various combinations of parameter values. The sensitivity of data to various parameters can be easily explored by changing one value and seeing the effect on the results. The book presents 37 example problems with solutions to show the estimation of atmospheric pollutant concentrations for many situations.

bible of dispersion.......2001-06-20
I am reading 1969 version of this book. I have borrowed this book from a Professor. It is a good stariting point for the formulation basics in dispersion. Up to now I had seen the names of Gaussian type, had never faced with the formulations. Thanks to Bruce Turner

With action-packed pictures and a simple, informative text, volunteer firefighter and fine artist Chris L. Demarest shows us how smokejumpers perform their unusual and difficult job of keeping all of us safe.
Customer Reviews:
Smokejumper one to ten.......2007-01-16
My two year old grandson loves the book. His parents are smokejumpers and not only does he look at the book he also names the jumpers using his parents name but he also can count and repeat some of the words on his own. He knows the story well. He use to take his sisters book to his room all the time how he has his own. It gets used a lot. The book contains some inaccurate information in what the smokejumpers are doing.
Brilliantly Written and Illustrated.......2003-05-22
I must say that I was apprehensive about a book about smokejumping. My 3 and 5 year old sons are the progeny of former smokejumper parents. They really know smokejumping! Since they loved Firefighters A to Z I knew we had to get this book, though.
Needless to say we weren't disappointed. The illustrations are large, brilliant, and true to life in their portrayal of the work of the smokejumper. The text is accurate, simple, yet elegantly descriptive. Oh yes! And the kids love to count along with the pictures and text. My son brought this one (proudly) to preschool and it quickly became such a favorite amongst the kids that the the teacher had to purchase her own copy for the school.

Book Description
Over two billion people in developing countries use only traditional biomass -- wood, dung and crop waste -- for their basic energy needs. The pollution from the burning of these fuels for cooking and heating is linked to the deaths of over 1.6 million people each year (more than three people a minute). Indoor air pollution is one of the leading causes of mortality and illness in developing countries. The main cause of deaths in children under five years old is acute lower respiratory infection, such as pneumonia -- and indoor air pollution is responsible for causing about 60% of these deaths. Despite these devastating facts about smoke, very few people are aware of the risks of indoor air pollution. It is quite literally the silent killer.
This report details the health impacts of smoke in homes across the developing world. Technical solutions are presented, with strategies for reducing exposure to smoke for millions of households. Recommendations are given on immediate actions to be taken to significantly scale-up the fight against the silent killer of smoke in the homes of the world’s most vulnerable people.
This report is part of the ITDG Briefings series, designed to inform and stimulate public debate on crucial issues of sustainable development. The series looks at the role of technology and economics in the battle against poverty, inequality and injustice. In an increasingly fragile and divided world the need for well-informed public debate is vital and these reports summarize the issues and offer recommendations for action.

Book Description
"Louis Jenkins captures-nails down really!-whole moments in time and space, completely decorated with all the essential textual things needed to make them vibrate and shudder with life."-Clarence Major
The 60 new prose poems in Sea Smoke continue Louis Jenkins' imaginative glimpses of scenes from contemporary life. Many of these pieces begin with the ordinary, but a subtle pivot in language propels the reader into an unexpected and oftentimes humorous perspective from which to view the world anew. Herein the blue moon is unhappy as it gazes into car windows, clouds sweep across the horizon as if serving Genghis Khan, and the poet considers the benefits of retirement:
Retirement
I've been thinking of retiring, of selling the poetry business and enjoying my twilight years. It's a prose poem business, so it's a niche market. Still, after thirty some years, I must have assets worth well in excess of $300. Perhaps the new owner of the business will want to diversify, go into novels or plays, or perhaps merge into a school or movement. It won't matter to me once I've retired. Maybe I'll do a little traveling, winter in the Southwest. Take up golf. Spend more time with the family. Maybe I'll just walk around and look at things with absolutely no compulsion to say anything at all about them.
Louis Jenkins lives in Duluth, Minnesota. His poems have been published in a number of literary magazines and anthologies. His books of poetry include An Almost Human Gesture (Eighties Press and Ally Press, 1987), All Tangled Up With the Living (Nineties Press, 1991), Nice Fish: New & Selected Prose Poems (Holy Cow! Press, 1995), Just Above Water (Holy Cow! Press, 1997), and The Winter Road (Holy Cow! Press, 2000). Some of his prose poems were published in The Best American Poetry 1999 (Scribner) and in Great American Prose Poems (Scribner, 2003).
Customer Reviews:
Louis Jenkins' SeaSmoke.......2005-02-21
The writers and critics who love Louis Jenkins' poems usually don't start out by saying that they are tremendously entertaining. They are. I've heard Jenkins give readings where the audience responded to him as to a stand-up comic. But the glint of humor that is present in almost every one of his prose poems shines out of his thoughtful and sometimes dark enjoyment of life.
Sea Smoke is a fine new collection of his prose poems. Take the poem "Popples." Here in Minnesota, where Louis Jenkins lives, popples, or "poplars," or "aspen," are trees as common as weeds, and we forget to look at them. Jenkins looks and listens, with a little smile: "Popples are excitable, quivering all over at the slightest hint of a breeze, full of stupid chatter, gossip, rumor, and innuendo." And he takes off from there, his impressions getting a little more bizarre: "The proletarian tree, growing, optimistic, got the kids all working, grandkids on the way."
But the comic view might miss the beauty of the popples, and Louis Jenkins doesn't: "Popples are lovely in fall when the leaves turn yellow and gold, or in winter with a new moon caught in the branches, and in spring when the rain enhances the delicate grey-green color of the bark. I wouldn't mind a view like this when I come to the bottom of the slide into old age and senility: a stand of popples judiciously framed by the bedroom window to exclude the junk car and the trash cans just to the right."
If you're curious about why Robert Bly said of Louis Jenkins, "Every generation has eight or ten good poets, and he is one of those in his generation," and why Garrison Keillor keeps bringing him back to read his poems on A Prairie Home Companion, and why one of the foremost literary critics in the U.S., Sven Birkerts, has extolled Sea Smoke and loves, as I do, the "elusive alternation of comedy and pathos" in the poems, read this book.

Book Description
David Strohmaier's long career as a firefighter has given him intimate knowledge of wildfire and its complex role in the natural world of the American West. It has also given him rare understanding of the painful losses that are a consequence of fire. Strohmaier addresses our ambivalence about fire and the realities of loss to it - life, human and animal, of livelihoods, of beloved places. He also examines the process of renewal that is yet another consequence of fire, from the infusion of essential nutrients into the soil, to the sprouting of seeds that depend on fire for germination, to the renewal of species as the land restores itself.
Ultimately, according to Strohmaier, living with fire is a matter of choices, of "seeing the connection between loss on a personal scale and loss on a landscape scale: in relationship with persons, and in relationship to and with the land." We must cultivate a longer perspective, he says, accepting that loss is a part of life and that "humility and empathy and care are not only core virtues between humans but are also essential virtues in our attitudes and actions toward the earth."
Drift Smoke is a powerful and moving meditation on wildfire by someone who has seen it in all its terror and beauty, who has lost colleagues and beloved terrain to its ferocity, and who has also seen the miracle of new life sprouting in the ashes. The debate over the role and control of fire in the West will not soon end, but Strohmaier's contribution to the debate will help all of us better appreciate both the complexity of the issues and the possibilities of hitherto unconsidered solutions that will allow us to inhabit a place where fire is a natural, and needed, part of life.

Customer Reviews:
Triumph over adversity. .......2006-05-17
For those of us who have experienced the loneliness, embarrassment, and stress of hearing or speech defects in our professional and social lives, Kiril Sokoloff's book is a deeply moving description of his personal suffering and its impact on his marriage and family. His description of his dear fathers speech problems, and the letter he would like to have written to him to express his love and understanding, moved me to tears as did many other incidents described in this remarkable book. Despite the sadness and pain this book is ultimately the story of one mans triumph over adversity to become one of the most respected and widely read individuals in the financial world today. Thank you Kiril for your example to us all.
Personal growth and redemption that speaks to the heart .......2006-03-23
Kiril Sokoloff has written an incredibly honest story, chronicling his journey from self-consciousness and a sense of unworthiness to a personal transformation embracing the power of compassion, gratitude, and love. This is not a "self help" book drawing inspiration from others, but a powerful story of self-examination, self-acceptance, and ultimately self-love arising from the pain of his own life experiences. It is a moving reminder of the power within us to rise above our personal demons and embrace the richness of life.
A Real Blessing.......2006-03-21
Kiril Sokoloff's "Personal Transformation" is a real blessing. There is no other way for me to describe this amazing book. "Personal Transformation" touched my heart in a way that few books can or do. It is very difficult for me to put my thoughts about this remarkable book into words. Words do not even begin to capture the love Mr. Sokoloff shares with us. His heart-wrenching tale of darkness to light should be required reading for Business and Wall Street executives as well as all those in search of The Truth. We should all be extremely grateful to Kiril for sharing his heart and mind with us. "Personal Transformation" is a timely reminder that where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Powerful and poignant.......2006-03-14
Kiril Sokoloff's book is a powerful and poignant sharing of his life-altering experience of losing his hearing as an adult. It is deeply personal and most moving. He willingly relates in detail the gamut of his emotions when confronted with this crisis. His description of the isolation and loneliness that came to pervade his everyday life in ordinary situations was a revelation to me. I can only admire his courage and determination to cope with, deal with, and live with his deafness. This volume can provide inspiration for any of us.
A Powerful Tome. Should be read by everyone.......2006-03-05
Kiril Sokoloff's Powerful story of his life and the tribulations he has gone through to achieve peace with himself, is one of the most awsome books I have ever read.
It should be required reading for anyone looking for more meaning in his life, I for one am sending it to my four children.
It can not fail to help anyone who is fortunate enough to read it.
What a terrific and inspiring experience!
