Book Description
In this stunning work, Pam Chun brings a new and powerful voice to the traditions of Chinese-American fiction. The Money Dragon brings to life the saga of L. Ah Leong, the Money Dragon, one of the legends of Hawai`i and the founder of Honolulu's Chinatown. At the turn of the twentieth century, Ah Leong rules over his Hawai`ian home, a legendary man so proficient in the martial arts he has brought himself back to life; a man who beguiles many wives, sires dozens of children and is driven by money and greed. He builds a financial empire, establishing himself as a leader both on the exotic islands and in his Chinese homeland. But when Phoenix, the wife of his first son Tat-Tung, arrives in Hawai`i, she becomes witness to how the values Ah Leong holds dear begin to tear him and his family apart.
The Money Dragon is a fascinating and important first novel, a tale of a family struggling between love, greed, jealousy and loyalty. Pam Chun reaches into her family history to deliver a story that shows the tumult and opportunity that occurs when the deep-rooted traditions of the Chinese people meet the sweeping advance of the Western world.
Customer Reviews:
good historical fiction.......2005-07-12
i really enjoyed the book, and finished it in record time. for some odd reason though, i enjoyed the parts about tat-tung and the phoenix a lot more than the parts about the actual money dragon. i guess it's because they were the good people in the book. good historical details about China. I had a little hard time translating the chinese terms into chinese though, because they were in cantonese, and i only speak mandarin. i always like novels based on real stories, and this is a great one.
An Enjoyable Read.......2003-07-12
I really enjoyed this book about a multigenerational Chinese family. It is a fictionalized account of the author's own family history. The patriarch, the Money Dragon of the title, arrives in Hawaii at the end of the 19th century. He becomes an immensely successful businessman and acquires FIVE wives and has many children.
The story is told from the eyes of his daughter-in-law Phoenix, wife of his second son Tat-Tung. She has to live in the shadow of her mother-in-law Dai-Kan, the First Wife. Dai-Kan is one of the most puzzling characters, she favors the children and grandchildren of the other wives more than her own. You would expect just the opposite.
From this book I began to understand the complex social dynamics of this type of family, and how their Confucian beliefs held the structure in place. I don't think that polygamous marriages are allowed today in China. I'm curious about how they did away with it since it seemed to be such an embedded part of their culture at the beginning of the 20th century.
The descriptions of Hawaii itself are somewhat lacking. Perhaps the author, who was born in Hawaii, suffers from too much familiarity with the subject. I didn't really get a sense of place from this book.
For those interested in Hawaiin historical fiction I would also recommend The Floating City by Pamela Ball.
A rare and precious picture........2002-11-07
Pam Chun writes an engrossing book about a prominent Chinese family in 19th-20th century Honolulu and provides readers with a rare glimpse into a lost past. If you've ever stared at stark, black and white photos of old Chinese families and wondered what they were really like, Pam Chun brings them to life as if they were your own family and leaves you with a quiet, settled, intimacy that only honest, careful writing can bring.
Set in pre-war Hawaii, the tale pulls together historic fact and fiction in a seamless, involving way, resisting the postcard or magazine style of popular history. She focuses on the intimate and personal details of her characters and families and renders them breathing, sweating, and lifelike. My only disappointment was that the book ended so quickly.
Hawaii and history enthusiasts will find fine detail in her tale that fill in the gaps of Western accounts. Asian Americans will feel and smell the painful and yet matter of fact pressures on the lives of their parents and grandparents. You will marvel at the strength of character of the early Chinese women and the entrenched families that were the rule of the day. And because her writing resists the sterotype, the polemic, and the popular, it transcends the usual place and era pieces.
This is not Michener. This is Hawaii. I hope she keeps writing.
A fascinating and compelling story.......2002-06-23
I could not put this book down until I had finished it. Pam Chun is a master storyteller and captivates the reader from the first page. L. Ah Leong is a poor Chinese immigrant who comes to Hawaii seeking a better life. Through hard work and diligence he amasses a fortune to declare to himself and those around him that he is a great man. The money, however, brings with it greed, a lust for power and destruction of the family. Set in territorial Hawaii one also gain insight into the injustice brought against the Hawaiian and Chinese population by the United States government and those who claimed to represent it.

Book Description
From the beloved bestselling author of Jonathan Livingston Seagull (Scribner, 1970), comes a single-volume edition of all five novels in The Ferret ChroniclesAir Ferrets Aloft, Rescue Ferrets at Sea, Writer Ferrets Chasing the Muse, Rancher Ferrets on the Range, and The Last War. These fables, originally published by Scribner, are action-packed tales about courage, sacrifice, heroism, creativity, and finding what matters most in life. Readers of all ages will delight in the adventures of Stormy, Monty, Budgeron, Shamrock, and Jasmine as they continue seeking "to fulfill their highest right" and try their best to help us humans too. Richard Bach is the author of Messiah's Handbook (Hampton Roads,2004) as well as multiple bestsellers including Jonathan Livingston Seagull and Illusions (Doubleday, 1977).
Customer Reviews:
touching and sweet.......2007-04-25
This is a truly sweet and touching collection of stories about love, good conduct, trust, and living fully. One of the main themes is following your "highest right" and basing your actions on this ideal. In short, these stories are excellent entertainment and also provide good food for thought.
Uplifting bedtime reading .......2006-02-03
This Hampton Roads reprint is an anthology of five small books written from the viewpoints of five sets of ferrets. Bringing these creatures' accounts under the roof of one book makes perfect sense here, because this really is one story. Furthermore, even as a sum of five books, Curious Lives is only 371 pages long.
This book is best read aloud at bedtime with your kids, spouse or lover. Its very nature and purpose entices the reader into a magical time zone to cuddle vicariously in the warmth of being cloaked in glistening soft fur.
It is undeniably wholesome; uplifting and inspiring without being sappy or preachy; poetic without being narcissistically grandiloquent. Though the ferret characters are endearing and tender, the author never succumbs to a facile cutesiness in his storytelling. Disney Films, Steven Spielberg and other purveyors of sentimental children's fare stand to learn a lot from Bach's honest, lucid story-telling and genuine wonderment at the deceptively simple things in life.
This particular reviewer had an unusually easy time suspending disbelief in order to embrace these ferrets' curiosity, love of the moment, psychologically realistic musings, and joyful message. This is saying a lot, given this reviewer's customary tone-deafness for other people's fantasy, hard-boiled cynicism toward magical thinking, suspiciousness of stories with a message, and difficulty tracking most visual descriptions.
I'd recommend saving this treat for a "cold and stormy night", accompanied by a soulful basso continuo of distant train song. Envelop yourself and your rapt audience in fur, whiskers and sweet thoughts.
Action packed moralistic Chronicals.......2005-11-15
Years ago, when I read Jonathan Livingston Seagull, I loved it and subsequently read the other books that Richard Bach wrote. It was exciting to me to find Bach's new book, a single volume of all five novels in the Ferret Chronicles, a world populated by admirable ferrets living by their code of ethics "The Courtesies". Some of the mottos that the ferrets live by are, the more ideas you have, the more shall you be given; you give who you are, the money follows - what you do with the money, there's a different test; we find our happiness only when we follow what we most love in all the world.
The chronicles are action packed tales about creativity, heroism, courage, and living a life for all to benefit.

early, fun Patricia C. Wrede.......2006-01-06
It's easy to see how some of the ideas in _The Seven Towers_ relate to Wrede's later books. Amberglas, for instance, seems to foreshadow Telemain in the Enchanted Forest Chronicles. In some ways she's a more interesting character--but she can also be more annoying to read. The whole idea of the towers also comes up again, though a little differently, with the tower in _Caught in Crystal_. Any major Wrede fans will find it a worthwhile read. It took me seven years (ironic, huh) to track down a copy in a used bookstore, but now we have copies readily available here, which is nice.
If you're not a Wrede fan already, I think I'd recommend looking at one of her later novels first (the Enchanted Forest Chronicles for something humorous; or _The Raven Ring_ or _Caught in Crystal_ for a general, all-around good fantasy quest type of novel; or _Snow White and Rose Red_ if you like fairy tales; or _Sorcery and Cecelia_ for a Regency story, mixed with magic). _The Seven Towers_ is by no means a bad book, but it's a bit scattered, and it certainly doesn't meet the same standards as her later books (not that I'm complaining; it's a good sign when you like a writer's works better and better as each new one comes out).
On the other hand, the style is distinctly different from her other books--it reminds me a little of an older style of sci-fi and fantasy that we don't see much of anymore; I'm not sure how to explain it, but the tone of the book seems like it's halfway in between the Lyra books and Asimov's original Foundation trilogy. Maybe I'm crazy and my copy just has the right, slightly yellowed older-book texture; I don't know. But I think it definitely has some interesting characteristics of the now-long-gone pulp novel (which was already well on the way out by the time _The Seven Towers_ was written). There are a lot of very stereotypical fantasy characters, but the twinge of humor works there. And maybe more importantly, even if you've already heard plenty of stories with shy princes, and older princesses who'd rather be mercenaries, _The Seven Towers_ is still a really fun read. It's not Wrede's best, in a literary sense, and it's not a terribly cohesive novel in a lot of ways (I'm not talking about the multiple points of view, either). But it's an interesting change of pace. And it's still a really intreguing story. Definitely worth picking up.
great!.......2002-05-30
I really like everything by Wrede, and this is no exception. It's been a while since I last read it, but I remember the story being interesting and the characters being witty. It was definitely worth the used bookstore hunt.
Wonderful!.......1999-09-21
I had gotten a collection of stories from a friend, and the beginning of The Seven Towers was one of them. It made me want to read the rest of the book, so I went to the library and got it. The story was really good, funny, exciting, and everything else you want. I liked this book a lot because you knew each character's personality really well. A good, well-written book.
facinating.......1998-06-19
It's been a long time since ive read this book, but it has lots of elememts working together; betrayal, good vs evil, politics, love, magic, comic relif, mystery. Every element works perfectly to make a very charming whole
Neat!.......1997-08-19
I was fortunate to find this book at a
used book store. I had read Wrede's Enchanted
Forest cronicles, before and loved them, so I was
really glad to find this. This book has a neat story.
I don't really want to tell what it's about, because
that would be giving away a lot of the book!
It has good characters. I especially
liked Amberglas, an absentminded sorceress.
This is a quote from the book:
"Good morning, my lady," he said with more
warmth then he had intended.
"Yes, it is, isn't it? Though of course it's
quite possible that it isn't nearly as good a morning
elsewhere. Shula Mari, for example. I belive
it quite frequently rains in Shula Mari at this time
of year, which could be quite depressing, though
perhaps it isn't if one lives there all the time.
But then, I haven't been there yet, so I'm not
entirely certain" (The one who spoke last was Amberglas)
She speaks like this (almost)the entire time!
I just really liked this book.

Customer Reviews:
Didn't Live Up.......2007-07-03
I absolutely love "The James Bond Lifestyle Seminar," but this audiobook fell short. The plot was decent, but nothing better than you'd expect based on the synopsis. The main character is supposed to be 33 years old, yet his voice sounds like an old man. He sounds very unsure of himself. Also, a lot more could have been done with the sound effects. They did not immerse me in the scenes, as another reviewer claimed.
I never wanted it to end!! Fabulous!.......2007-01-16
Mr Kyriazi's production of Hard Rock Lovers was just fantastic! I was on the edge of my seat on a daily basis! I put the audio book on my iPod and listened while I jogged. I gotta say it motivated me to get out there and I am so sad it is over! I cannot wait for his next Audio production!
The story is fantastic, gripping and sexy. I absolutely loved it!
Bravo!!!!
An all-star cast of my generation! I swooned over Rod Taylor and Robert Culp!.......2006-05-22
Wow! My sister pointed me to this audio book and I couldn't believe my ears. I just relaxed on my bed to listen and was absolutely delighted with the movie-quality of the sound effects. Not only is this a masterful, well-written plot, it's also a quality production. The best I've heard.
And those stars that the magnificent author/director Paul Kyriazi lined up for this special version of his book!!! Well, all I can say is that I remember swooning each time I saw any of them on the big screen. (I hope my hubby doesn't read this.) But when I saw Rod Taylor--who narrates this story, with such a come-hither voice--starring in The Birds with that gorgeous Tippi Hedren, I almost fainted. Yes, he was that much of a hunk ... and still is, according to my sister!
Incidentally, people used to say I looked like Tippi. Ah-hhh, memories ... But getting back to this audio book, I loved it to pieces.
Keep up the excellent work, Mr. K. You're terrific, and almost as handsome as the great Rod! Ciao, baby ...
WONDERFUL cast, beautifully performed, an EXCITING thrilling journey you won't forget!.......2006-03-15
From the moment Hard Rock Lovers comes on ... it takes you by the hand and mind, and immediately draws you into this intriquing story, narrated by the imcomparable Rod Taylor, of revenge, love, lust, cold reality and spiritual enlightenment.
Robert Culp kept me laughing with his perfect low-life agent performance, always the best! James Darren was the perfect rock star, mean, talented but sad, his performance was # 1. Ishtar Uhvana was great as Medusa, she added the sweetness to keep some reality in the rock world and her ending dialoque brought tears to my eyes. Loved Russ Tamblyn, George Chakiris was brilliant as the evil Reynaldo, and Nefta Perry as Connie played the perfect Rosie Perez.
The ending gives you hope and leaves you with happy feelings. You will want to play it again and again; it only gets better each time you listen.
Paul Kyriazi is my hero. I am his BIGGEST fan.
Thank you Paul for the fun and exciting adventure!
"Hard Rock Lovers".....Beautifully done!!.......2006-03-14
The "Hard Rock Lovers" audio book was not at all what I expected, but what a wonderful surprise! It's a twisted, tangled web of events played out by a handful of multi-leveled, intertwined characters. The story is well written, beautifully told and convincingly enacted centering on the heights of a successful rock star and the terrible costs that are paid when that success is abused. People and events are manipulated by all the characters to satisfy their own needs and agenda.
"Good" and "evil" are blurred. "Life" and "death" are blurred. Relationships are blurred, but the irony of fate is boldly presented and it's made abundantly clear that our "next" existence offers another chance to hopefully do better. The inevitability of change, the subtle and sometimes dramatic interrelationships between cause and effect as well as the ever-present, ever-looming scales of divine and poetic justice are persistent threads. A beautiful blending of drama and melodrama are used to develop both the story and the characters. The audio presentation is top-notch entertainment, particularly when you consider that all acting is accomplished solely through vocal artistry. The actors do a fantastic job of inviting the listener into their world and moving you effortlessly through the story.
I really enjoyed listening to this audio book. It is wonderful from start to finish and my congratulations go out to all involved. It's a winner on all levels.

Book Description
A compelling introduction to the world of myth and its influence on culture and society.
From the white stag to the green knight, The Seven Story Tower examines how myth colors our perception of history, nature, and ourselves. Organized around seven key myths-representing the Irish, Greek, Sumerian, Indonesian, Amazonian, and Inuit cultures, as well as the fantasy world of J. R. R. Tolkien-this book is the perfect intro-duction to the common themes found in world mythology. Curtiss Hoffman, a noted archaeologist and anthropologist, takes us beyond the entertaining stories and uses insights from cultural anthropology and analytical psychology to analyze the many common themes found throughout. In particular, he examines the significance of names, numbers, plants, animals, the heavenly bodies, and the human body. The Seven Story Tower will enhance the reader's appreciation of myth's power today over our lives and cultures.
