Book Description

In the middle of a big city, a boy named Harry has a horse in his room! No one else can see the horse, but Harry loves him and hopes the horse will always stay.

But then Harry visits the country, where he sees horses running free, and he wonders if his own horse would be happier there.

The answer to Harry's question is wonderful and unexpected and is sure to please beginning readers as much as it does Harry. Syd Hoff has created a warm and satisfying story containing "few words [and] much wisdom".

5 out of 5 stars glad to see it.......2006-12-22

I'm glad to see this book is still in print. I don't have anything to add to other reviewers' details about it. I enjoyed it many years ago with my own children. I certainly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Basic vocabulary.......2006-12-21

This book is very helpful for beginning readers. Most of the words are on the Dolch sight word list of words which should be recognized instantly in order for reading to flow smoothly. The quiet nature of the story makes it appropriate for a bedtime story or for developing reading skills.

5 out of 5 stars Again again again!.......2006-11-12

Timeless story, heartwarming message, beautiful pictures - yeah, it's a bit outdated (Little Harry wearing his little tie while playing with his little blocks), but my 5-year-old loves it and reads it again and again and again...

5 out of 5 stars A book about imagination and true friendship! A fun book for young kids!.......2006-09-29

I remember reading this book to my children a few years ago. It's a fun, imaginative book. The sparse illustrations are perfect for the tone of this book.

Harry is such a cute, lovable little character. You will fall in love with him and his horse. Highly recommended.

My granddaughter learning to read loved this book. She's a horse lover, and has imaginary friends, so putting the two together was fun for her. She read it with help from me for only one word, horse. The rest she knew. I'm always looking for books for her to read.

    Book Description

In Stories of an Imaginary Childhood Melvin Jules Bukiet inscribes the world that might have been his own if not for the catastrophe that destroyed most of Jewish life in eastern Europe during the 1940s. Set before the Holocaust in the tiny Polish shtetl of Proszowice, each interconnected story follows the young protagonist through the pleasures and humiliations of childhood and the rites of manhood, as he fights against historical, social, and psychological forces that threaten to pull him down.

The true story of a life changed one bright March morning with the abuse and rape of a five year old girl's body and soul and subsequently how she sought solace within the love of an imaginary friendship and found the courage to heal. A survivor's story that proves that victim's don't have to just survive, they can thrive.

          Lovelorn
          Loveworn Love Lost

Perplexed Prince Dolph, Xanth's precocious shapeshifter, should be in love but isn't. Nonetheless, he must chose between two fiancées -- Nada the uninterested and Electra the uninteresting -- or all three of them will suffer the most dire consequences. Luckily a convenient catastrophe has popped up to distract Dolph form his dilemma -- the foal-napping of young Che Centaur by goblins. And the only one who knows where Che is is a nice but remarkably naive elflike gir named Jenny from the World of Two Moons. If anyone can save the missing centaur...she sure can't.

          4 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable read.......2007-08-22

Isle of View is a typical Piers Anthony romp through the land of Xanth, with all puns and bad jokes present. If you haven't liked the Xanth books in the past, then you won't like this one, because it's more of the same.

I, on the other hand, have become quite fond of Anthony's irreverent punning and hilarious cast of characters. We get to see a different side of the centaur society with the outcast family of winged centaurs when Che, the foal, is kid- ...err... foal-napped.

The ensuing action (and hilarity) make this a worthy addition to the Xanth lineup. Does anybody know the way there? I think I'd like to move in....

5 out of 5 stars PA's most mature Xanth fantasy besides anything with Bink.......2005-04-27

The nature of love is thoroughly explored in a novel with a provocative name that takes off from HEAVEN CENT. Anthony transmutes a real-life physically challenged girl hit by a drunk driver into a blind goblin girl with chiefly aspriations over her brutish brethren. Meanwhile, Prince Dolph and his two fiancees, Electra and Princess Nada, set out on a quest that never distracts them from their personal dilemma, but along the way Dolph discovers the true nature of love. It's fortunate that Nada evolved from a bit part, because she is not the typical cold beautiful princess. Her friendship with Electra gives her depth, as does her duty to her people...but once again, someone manages to misunderstand an oracle's words. There are jokes aplenty about summoning the stork, the Adult Conspiracy, and men's stupefaction at women's underwear, but Dolph evolves beyond that, as one would expect of a shapeshifter.

Anthony actually has a history of successful loving couples: Millie and Jonathan, Trent and Iris, Bink and Chameleon, Smash and Tandy, Humfrey and Gorgon, and Bria and Esk.

5 out of 5 stars Piers has done it again!.......2002-02-27

Isle of View is a fun-filled, action-packed extravaganza! It's absolutely my favorite of all the Xanth novels. I would recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Isle of View (I love you).......2001-08-25

Chex's foal, Che, has been kidnapped, with dire consequences. Not only is he the last of the winged centuars, he is also subjected to change the history of Xanth. Meanwhile, Prince Dolph has got himself engaged to two girls: Naga, who he loves, and Electra, who will literally DIE if he doesn't marry her in a week. At the same time, there is a rip in Xanth, through which strange creatures are coming through, including an unusual elf girl from the world of two moons, who winds up with Che. Che and the elf girl are rescued___by Che's orginal kidnappers. They need him to be a companion to to the potentialy only female goblin chief, who may make goblin males half-way nice. But as she is very near-sighted, she may be killed if this is discovered. The winged monsters are slowly leveling goblin mountain to get at Che, the rip in Xanth is producing creatures more powerful than demons, and Electra's day's are ticking as Dolph struggles to make a decision. *A true prize. Reccomended to anyone who has a brain that can think and imagine. 'Vonderbar' 'OohLaLa' 'Samia Charoshia' 'Tov Me'od' 'You get the picture'

          5 out of 5 stars P.A. Does it again!.......2001-04-22

I am a 16 year-old guy who loves Piers Anthony's style of writing. This book has staked its claim at the top of my list of Xanth writings. Wow. This novel is full of twists and turns that keeps the reader coming back for more. Even if you have read ahead of this and know the story, you will be quite pleased. Che Centaur is the only offspring of his kind that he knows of, and he is protected by all the winged monsters of Xanth due to a pledge enstated by the infamous Simurgh, however, Che is kidnapped by Goblins. (Never good!) Meanwhile, it is a very short time away from poor Electra's eighteenth birthday, and Prince Dolph has still not chosen between the voluptuous Princess Nada Naga and Electra, the maiden he awoke from a 1000 year slumber, who has fallen magically in love with him. Naturally being a young man, Dolph is considering Nada Naga mor readily than Electra, despite the huge age difference between himself the half-serpentine princess. The book pans out in the usual Piers Anthony way, full of puns, twists and turns, and has a beautifully written climax that can literally take your breath away. If you like fantasy at all, you must pick this book up. Also, on a personal note, Jenny Elf is introduced in this book, and for those who are unaware, Jenny Elf is actually a real girl who has horribly injured for life in a brutal drunk-driving accident, when she was a young girl. Her story is also in the end notes of this book. It truly brings a tear to one's eye, and this reviewer's heart goes out to her and her family.

            Book Description

With essays by an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars, Dark Horizons focuses on the development of critical dystopia in science fiction at the end of the twentieth century. In these narratives of places more terrible than even the reality produced by the neo-conservative backlash of the 1980s and the neoliberal hegemony of the 1990s, utopian horizons stubbornly anticipate a different and more just world. The top-notch team of contributors explores this development in a variety of ways: by looking at questions of form, politics, the politics of form, and the form of politics. In a broader context, the essays connect their textual and theoretical analyses with historical developments such as September 11th, the rise and downturn of the global economy, and the growth of anti-capitalist movements.

            Book Description

On July 31, 1991, the final episode of Alien Nation, "Green Eyes" aired, ending the series with a blockbuster finale and an exciting cliffhanger. In "Green Eyes" the Newcomers were faced with a deadly new bacteria created by a ruthless group of humans called Purists, who were determined to rid the Earth of the alien Tenctonese. As the story closed, all of the Alien Nation characters were in crisis, and the Francisco family was infected with the bacteria, facing certain death. This story was never resolved...until now. "Dark Horizon" was a two-hour Alien Nation script commissioned by Twentieth Century Fox. The story would have resolved the cliffhanger and kicked off Alien Nation's second seacon. With the final cancellation of the series, the script was put away and fans were left with their questions unanswered. Pocket Books is now proud to present a novelization by critically acclaimed science fiction author K.W. Jeter, of the entire action-packed story that began with "Green Eyes" and ended with "Dark Horizon." As the story opens, George Francisco and Matthew Sikes stand watch over George's family, while the Earth faces a new threat. A ruthless Overseer has come from space to recover the Tenctonese slaves, and he will stop at nothing to see that the Newcomers-- as well as the entire human race-- are enslaved forever.

            5 out of 5 stars Closure.......2007-06-08

This was amazingly well written for a media tie-in novel. I bought the series and hadn't seen the movies since they first aired. I was glad to happen upon this book to once again resolve the cliffhanger ending from "Green Eyes".

            5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-06-01

I'm so glad this book was written as it resolved the cliffhangers, even the ones that weren't touched in the eventual movie that was made.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the movie.......2001-08-13

This was one of the more interesting books, since I saw the movie before I knew the book existed. I felt that it was much better, things were detailed more and it really got into the characters. I think it even resolved the part in the cliffhanger episode with Buck and his teacher. I haven't read it in a while so I'm not positive. Anyway, it's definately worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Great continuation for a sad end to the series.......2001-01-03

This book finally shows us the conclusion to the last episode of the TV series. Unfortunatly, the TV series left us hanging with it's last show. What happened to George's family after they inhaled the poison? That was the question left on the fans minds at the end of the series? Why was the show ended, and the last story never resolved? Although we may never know the true answer to the second question, we can now find out the answer to the first. This book gives us a detailed account of the last episode, AND the conclusion we all wanted. Even though we eventually saw the episode, and a few new movies, this book is in my opinion superior to the movie. If you can find a copy of this book, or any of the others, grab it! You will not be sorry.

I'm always on the lookout for a good game, and the Dark Horizons offerings certainly fit the bill. If you're into minis, Escape comes with those; if you're into a VERY clever means of map-making, look no further; rules that model close-combat quickly and clearly? Dark Horizons: Escape nails 'em all. A great find and fun to play!

                  Book Description

From atop the majestic peaks of the San Vicente Volcano, an ancient deity snares a lonely girl on the verge of womanhood and a travelling wastrel seeking his next conquest in an eternal battle for vengeance. Dark Palms on the Horizon journeys through the heart of El Salvador - through its culture, its people, and its mysteries - as the winds of change descend upon the unsuspecting good citizens in the small village of Santa Maria. First-time author Michele L. Schrader served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in El Salvador. The two years she spent in the mountainous countryside served as inspiration for the novel.

                            Book Description

Having been sought in the sphere of economic production for too long, according to Jean Baudrillard, the mainspring of modern society must be located in the sphere of consumption and of the cultural system in general. As with artistic, intellectual, and scientific production, culture is immediately produced as sign and as exchange value. Hence, in modern society consumption defines the stages where the commodity is immediately produced as sign, and signs as commodities.

This collection of essays attempts an analysis of the sign form in the same way that Marx's critique of political economy sought an analysis of the commodity form: as the commodity is at the same time both exchange value and use value, the sign is both signifier and signified. Thus, it necessitates an analysis on two levels, with the author confronting all of the conceptual obstacles of semiology in order to provide the same radical critique that Marx developed of classical political economy.
