If you are a Koko and Yum Yum fan, this book is for you. Lillian Jackson Braun writes these stories in a way that pulls you into the story. You are with Qwill and Koko every step of the way. The twists are well done. A story worth reading over and over...

5 out of 5 stars The Cat Who Brought Down the House.......2006-11-04

I purchased this as a gift for my aunt, who has been collecting this whole set of books. Although I have not personally read them, she is an avid and loyal fan, along with many of her friends. They all seem to have a "close relationship" with this author; and, reading her books makes them feel "at home again". All of her books are "connected", and my aunt feels they should be read in succession without missing any one of them. Once she starts reading one, she JUST CAN'T PUT IT DOWN!

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2006-09-30

Even though I'm only 11, people, CHILL. I am curently feasting on it, but I love it. This is practically the only good cat fiction out there. All you cat lovers, BUY IT NOW. And one last thing: MEOW!!!

1 out of 5 stars Not one of her better ones..........2006-05-09

I've been a fan of this series for years, but this one was really disappointing. One almost gets the impression that Braun herself has lost interest in the series...(IF she even writes the books anymore!?) Of course, the books have always been slow, but they did have a certain charm to them, making them the perfect bedtime material...but, boy, did I sleep well, when I was reading THIS one...

5 out of 5 stars Braun's back to writing well........2006-04-15

I really enjoyed THE CAT WHO BROUGHT DOWN THE HOUSE, and I consider it one of her best, especially one of the best of her recent ones. Most of the book is a pleasant visit with the inhabitants of Moose County. The mystery is really only a side note, but it's still fun. The early books in this series were SO good, and later the plots seemed to be phoned in, but she's back in form here.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing Effort from a Worthwhile Author.......2004-05-28

I have truly enjoyed all of Anthony's Xanth books up until this one. The books of this series are made memorable and entertaining to me largely due to the incredible imagination of the author. That is, unfortunately, the main missing aspect of this novel. Our young heroine's talent seems to function as a vehicle for making unbelievable polt twists occur rather than as a specific talent that marked the heros and heroines of the other Xanth novels. **SPOILER** Another weak chain of events was the benefit reaped by the Tree of Life. That idea was about as poorly put forth as Ivy's talent of convenience---I was half expecting Irene to find a seed that grew cannons or Volvos.

While most other Xanth novels had the ability to make the reader believe that the fantastical events were possible in Xanth due to the incredible magic of the land and characters, this one just made this reader believe the author ran out of good ideas.

2 out of 5 stars Cute, but compared to the other Xanth novels, it's pathetic.......2004-05-20

Alright, most people will agree that the first 3 Xanth novels were awesome. And some of the later ones were entertaining as well. But this book does not do the series justice. About a young girl, who happens to be the princess, who is lost in the jungles of Xanth. Meanwhile, the Gap Dragon has become a child and escaped from the Gap and caused "forget whorls" to appear all over Xanth. Okay, sounds really good right? Nice plot, huh? No, it's not. This book is overly coincidental, has pretty uninspired characters, and is pretty unrealistic, even for the setting. It totally does not show the normal actions of a child well after about the first 50 pages. And each conflict seems to appear with no relation to the last. Basically, it was a good idea turned bad, by some lazy planning by our friend Piers. The puns are still in full effect, fun, but getting a tad corny. If you're reading the series in order, you may as well read this - it's fun for a while but in the end a turn off - but don't let that distract you from this wonderful series.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Zanth Series.......2002-07-30

If you're going to read any of the Zanth series, this is the one to read.

While really serious readers would be best adviced to avoid this book-and all others in the Zanth series-like the plague, if you want a light, humorous, cute, and up-lifting story, then it's hard to find one that comes off as well as this. Just the mention of "Stanley Steamer" brings a little smile to my face.

If you like this Zanth story, then there are others in the series that are others nearly as good. (Although I'd never ever recommend reading the whole series, unless you're about 13 and extremely bored over the summer.) The first one, A Spell for Chameleon is probably the most serious of the series, and rather good. Castle Roogna is also good, as is Ogre, Ogre, and Night Mare. Reading more than 5 (maybe even fewer) though would expose the enormous flaw in the series-repitition.

2 out of 5 stars Xanth Series Running on Fumes.......2001-09-22

I very much enjoyed the first few Xanth novels. In those early novels, Anthony combined a well thought-out world, engaging characters, and a humourous tone to make eminently readable books. He lost the spark somewhere along the way, however. The later books, like this one, are simply going through the motions. Take Princess Ivy, for example. Early characters -- like Bink in A Spell for Chameleon -- had unique characteristics and abilities that they had to learn to use to resolve the challenges facing them. With Ivy, Anthony cops out. Her "special power" basically boils down to an ability to cause anything to happen that she desires. Not surprisingly, having given himself this incredible crutch, Anthony feels no need to put much thought into the plot of the book or to devise creative ways for his characters to resolve problems. What, there's a giant chasm blocking the characters' passage? That's ok, Ivy has decided that someone has the ability to sprout wings and fly them across....

4 out of 5 stars entertaining but problematic.......2001-04-28

Much as I enjoyed this entry in the Xanth series, in retrospect, it seems as if it marked that point when the series began to turn to pure comedy, then to flat-out farce---which was unfortunate. The most recent entries in the series have been so plotless as to be nearly unreadable.

"Dragon on a Pedestal", though, is a charming book about a little girl who gets lost in a terrifically dangerous wilderness, surviving only by her innate good nature---coupled with a Sorceress-level magical talent, of course. Co-starring the Gap Dragon, a.k.a. Stanley Steamer.

                Very cute.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent slice of Jose Farmer.......2005-04-18

(Note: The title of this book is actually "The Stone God Awakens", at least it is on my 1976 copy.)

With "Stone God" Farmer once again demonstrates his ability to create a richly detailed and convincing world, filled with jaw-dropping ideas, absorbing action and well-thought-out characters. My only faint criticisms would be that Ulysses Singing Bear, the eponymous hero of this book, is a character very similar to the Samuel Clemens of the "Riverworld" series, and perhaps too similar in that a number of the things he does - such as building large vehicles and an army in a primitive environment - were a little too reminiscent of Clemens and his Riverboat; and that the book finishes too soon. I want more!

Overall, though, this is a great example of why Farmer is one of SF's best-loved names.

Note: "Sailoil" has got mixed up in his review on this page dated five years ago - everything in it up to "the hero awakes" refers to Farmer's novel "Dayworld", not this book. Maybe he was a little "stoned" himself when he wrote it.

5 out of 5 stars great epic story.......2003-03-21

The stone g-d awakens is the story of a man out of his time. A brilliant scientist gets petrefied for 25 million years only to awaken to a totally alien world where he happens to be worshiped as a g-d by people resembling cats. There is also a little cross species eroticism as he tries to resist the wiles of an extremely attractive feline like female. action packed, great story. I highly recommend it. I have two copies myself. Enjoy =)

4 out of 5 stars Great idea and well written........2000-08-04

As populations spiral out of control on earth the technology to "stone" people becomes available. While stoned your molecules cease to vibrate and you do not age. Seven families can share the same apartment with each group living one day of the week and remaining stoned in the wardrobe, neatly out of the way the rest of the time. Then a natural disaster brings civilization down. The hero awakes from his sleep to a world many thousands of years in the future, mankind is gone and has been replaced by antropomorphic animals. He has been revered for thousands of years as a stone god and his awakening sets up consternation. Great plot, well told, and can a man fall in love with a man sized full figured female cat? Brings a whole new view to female depilation :-). I really liked this book, and it has remained a memorable work. Well worth a read.

                                                    Book Description

If we cannot see God with our own eyes, for what purpose do we picture God in art? During the Middle Ages, the Second Commandment's warning against idolatry was largely set aside as the power of images became boldly and visibly evident. By the twelfth century, one Byzantine authority could even offer his own revision of the Commandment: "Thou shalt paint the likeness of Christ Himself." How and when, Herbert L. Kessler asks, was the Jewish prohibition of images in worship converted into a Christian imperative to picture God's invisibility once God had taken human form in the body of Jesus Christ?

In Spiritual Seeing, Kessler explores ways in which the medieval debate about the functions and limits of images influenced the production of sacred art. Offering a new interpretation of Christian images as mediators between the human and the sacred, Kessler considers how the creators of images in Byzantium and the Latin West were able to situate art at the boundary between the physical and the spiritual worlds. He examines the ways in which images acquired such legitimacy that sacred art became a privileged metaphor for divine revelation. Portraits of Christ, in particular, took on central importance. Throughout the book, Kessler also considers the lingering anxiety about the capacity of human sight to apprehend the divine in images. In so doing, he discloses the artful dodges devised to deal with the controversy of picturing God's invisibility in material form.
