    Book Description

In this swiftly paced and lyrical novel about British expatriates at the time of Indian independence, Paul Scott grapples with the themes of race, possession, and history that dominate all four novels of his masterpiece, The Raj Quartet, especially The Jewel in the Crown. As always, Scott fills his book with vivid characters: the seductive, bigoted war widow; the sophisticated, wily Hindu politician; and the athletic young American who only gradually begins to understand the legacy of pain and hatred veiling the woman he has come to rescue. Set against the backdrop of a nation in violent transition—a climate of exhilaration and shifting loyalties—Six Days in Marapore unfolds amidst the possibility of reconciliation, freedom, and healing.

"Scott's brief characterizations are as important to Six Days in Marapore as the basic plot . . . This is not primarily a novel of India, but rather more of frightened foreigners living there at the end of their era."—New York Times

"Intense, abrasive, the many conflicts and telltale stigmata of Hindu and Moslem, white and off white, give this its uncertain temper and certain suspense."—Kirkus Reviews

Split Infinity is the first book in Piers Anthony's Apprentice Adept series. Here two worlds exist side by side: Proton and Phaze. Proton is a science fiction world, where everything works in a logical and scientific manner. Phaze is a fantasy world similar to Anthony's Xanth in that there's no such thing as science--it's all done with magic! The wild plot involves a young adventurer named Stiles who lives in Proton and learns that his "double" in Phaze has been murdered. To solve his own demise, Stiles must travel between the two realities, each abounding with the expected confusions and unexpected plot twists for which Anthony is famous. An artful blending of SF and fantasy clichés and situations, Split Infinity shows Piers Anthony at the top of his ingenious game(s). --Stanley Wiater

      Book Description

On the technological, decadent world of Proton, someone was trying to destroy Stile, serf and master Gamesman. His only escape lay in Phaze, a world totally ruled by magic. Soon he learned that his alternate self had already been murdered, and that he was next. On Proton, his fate depended on winning the great Games. On Phaze, he must master magic to survive. And if he used any magic at all, his friends were determined to kill him at once!

Science world or fantasy world, it isn't much fun to be in the lower classes.

This book has all sorts of stuff, and the title is a reference to the two different sorts of universes therein. The main character is a serf, or member of the underclass in the science based universe. He is exceptional in that he is one of the top players of a complicated Game that is a major part of life there, which basically involves navigating through a series of contests.

Apart from that, someone wants to bump him off.

5 out of 5 stars A seed planted many years ago.......2007-08-01

I was twelve years old when this book was handed to me. It sparked in me the knowledge that what I wanted to do was to write stories. Looking back over the years I would imagine that this and the many other Piers Anthony books which fed me through my adolescence have had a more subtle affect on my life as well. Nothing which touches you leaves you unaffected.

I'm about to turn thirty and I haven't read a Piers Anthony book in years. Even so I found myself checking to see, just in the off-chance, if perhaps he'd ever put out another book in this series.

      5 out of 5 stars Romantic metaphysics.......2006-06-15

This book is a great read. Obviously there's a lot of gratuitous sex, but most sci-fi writers tended to delve into that to some extent. Compared to what we see in the movies these days, it's relatively tame.

One thing that makes this book particularly interesting is that it raises the question of what makes a thing alive. This is a metaphysical question that has been explored many times in Hollywood and on TV (For instance, the movie Short Circuit, and the Star Trek TNG episode "The Measure of a Man"), but I particularly enjoyed the way Anthony approaches it here. Can a person truly love a machine?

Polyamorists and other proponents of free love might find this book of interest. Yes, the main character Stile has a lot of sex, but the author paints a picture of genuine love for each of his partners. Idealistic, perhaps, but not quite as far-fetched as some might be led to believe....

Anthony's depictions of The Games are what really drive this book, and each sequence is quite addictive. Some day I figure someone will put together a similar system in real life, and the whole thing will become some sort of televised, 24-hour reality show. Scary thought.

Anyway, I don't know whether this review will be particularly helpful to anyone, but I found the book interesting on many levels, and entertaining to boot. Plus, even 20 years after the first time I read it, I still count it among my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Attention to detail.......2006-02-23

This was a great blend of sci fi and fantasy, though I would say it leans more towards the fantasy genre than sci fi. Piers Anthony tells his tales in a classical storybook type of fashion, which I like, although I would say his prose has one glaring defect. I believe that when he comes across a monster in the storyline that he needs to do a more thorough job of describing it. I have a tendency to like to know all the gory details of a mythical monster. Other than that though, Anthony does a fine job with this tale, weaving both plot and character development together expertly.

It will be glaringly obvious to anyone who reads this that Anthony has a profound compassion for horses. I'm not even particularly fond of horses, but he did such a good job building Neysa the unicorn's character up that I have come to attain a newfound respect for them. It would be a crime to keep a man with that much passion about horses away from them- the wonders they must do for his sense of well being readily transcend through to his writing. Great story!

      1 out of 5 stars Review from a Science Fiction Reader's Perspective.......2005-11-28

Oh lord, was this an awful book to read through. I was loaned this book to read from a friend who loved horses and thus the unicorns in the book appealed to her, and she thought since I read science fiction, that this fantasy novel might appeal to me as well. It didn't. I suppose it really isn't fair to judge this book for a reader that's outside the genre of this book, which is definitely fantasy. I think most science fiction readers would stay away from this book based just upon it's chintsy cover of someone fencing with the horn of the unicorn. It's a telling cover of the novel itself. I read this book years ago and it felt dated then so who knows what it's like now (the novel was published in 1980). For those that enjoy fantasy this has all the standards of that genre, unicorns, fantastic settings and magic, etc. Anthony, along with Stephen Donaldson and Anne McCaffrey were very popular fantasy writers of that time, and his idea for his other novel On a Pale Horse, where someone who kills Death takes It's place even made it to one of The Simpsons (Halloween?) episodes, which is when one knows they made it to the mainstream. But this novel is no Lord of the Rings. For science fiction readers, there are other books you would probably want to put ahead on your reading list.

As a side note, for those that are fascinated with horses, which are magnificent animals, that would have a horn but alas unicorns do not exist, read about narwhals which are real, live, existing animals (whales) that have a horn, and a spiral one at that.

Not your average bear on the fantasy world either.

When in the fantasy world Stile discovers that he can do the magic thing, and holds the title of the novel, in fact. Opposite of Blue is Red, it seems, and he has an enemy, who he must defeat on Phaze and also in the Tourney via the Game back on Proton, to keep everything cool.

5 out of 5 stars Introductory Course: How to Live in 2 Worlds, Simultaneously.......2000-10-17

Journey with Stile, in a world of High-Tech--Juxtaposed with a Realm of Fantasy and Magick. Experience a world in-which you are not allowed to wear clothing (unless absolutely necessary), if you are not among the Elite...and a piece of Lingerie is a treasure to be kept safe, like gold or diamonds in our own world. Our hero is a man of Sports and a contender not-only in games and Olympic feats, but of quests in magickal lands... trying to survive assassination on both planes of existence! Even crossing-over is a danger to his life. This is very adventurous reading, with Sci-Fi & Fantasy...Futuristic, High-Tech & Magickal, Low-Tech scenarios...combined in a flowing epic of self-discovery and Mastership. You may have noticed, that I did not review the first book of the series ("SPLIT INFINITY") and opted for "BLUE ADEPT," instead.... Well, the cover of this book attracted me to the series (Glad it hasn't changed :) --So, I went with my...instincts...on this issue. Anyway, all the books are great! Make sure you don't forget "JUXTAPOSITION," or you will be left hangin' until you receive the next purchase. I loved the series and I suggest searching for all of Piers Anthony's novels.... This is a guy you can't go wrong with. So, there you have it--Introductory Course: How to Live in 2 Worlds, Simultaneously!

3 out of 5 stars Another frustratingly typical Anthony sequel!.......2000-09-06

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Piers Anthony books are like crack. They're everywhere, and once you start, you have to read them all. It's awful. Because everyone I know who's read them has read them all, and I suspect almost everyone who reads them reads them all, and yet at least a third of every one of them is exposition. You can skip whole chunks of any book that's not the first in a series, and you will miss nothing. It's like old newspaper serials, where "The Story So Far" would be twice as long as the new installment. I've been here before. I know these people. Get on with it. And this is not complicated stuff to begin with. This is not hard to pick up.

5 out of 5 stars Piers Anthony is the Literature Adept!.......1999-12-01

Piers Anthony is a Literature Adept! It's true. The man is encredible! I read his auto-biography (Bio of an Ogre), and it's great! I can just picture him in his cabin in Florida, writing great works of literature. The story of Stile, the next Scott Sethgreen, is magically transported from the world of Proton, to the world of Phase, is creative, and funny. There is no vernacular english spoken in Phase, and Stile suddenly becomes "The Blue Adept." His best freind is murdered by an unknown villain, who is coming for Stile next. Together with The Lady Blue, his charge, Sheen, his lovely robot, and the help of a Unicorn or two, magic harmonica in hand, Stile is off to destroy the enemy.

4 out of 5 stars It was an enjoyable book........1999-10-26

It was a lot like Split Infinity, in the way that it seemed to be written not quite for adults, but not for kids. These first two books took me a bit more to get through, but the ones after these get a bit more interesting.

It's a pretty easy read too. It doesn't take long to read the whole book. It's like one of those books you read when you don't have much else to do, but it's more enjoyable than that. So anyways...I guess you'd have to read it to make your own opinion of it.

            Out of balance is bad.

The science world Proton has a fancy substance that keeps it going, and there is a sort of analogue on the fantasy world Phaze. Rapacious mining is not a good idea, apparently, and leads to an imbalance. This means Stile has to come up with a way to stop bad destructionness, which will involve a serious case of the splits.

            1 out of 5 stars Not a good ending.......2007-08-23

I usually like Anthony's books, and I enjoyed the first two of the Adept series. This one just seems pale in comparison. Too much happening to make much sense, too many unlikely events (yeah, even in a fantasy novel). Just didn't make any sense. The fact that no one seems much surprised about the existence of a parallel universe I can't help but find odd. Heck, what seemed like a huge secret in the first two books turns out to be common knowledge to the point where no one so much as blinks an eye. Winning the games, which had been a key focus up till now, has all the excitement of watching grass grow. Even the final game is totally anti-climatic. The 'big finish' is so obvious to the reader that its painful to have to read the final three chapters Anthony takes to actually have it happen.

I almost wish I'd have just quit at the first two. I'll stick with the Xanth series (although it long ago ran out of steam) and the Pale Horse series.

            4 out of 5 stars Appropriate ending.......2007-06-01

I was able to figure out the ending long before, but it was still enjoyable to finally finish this trilogy. I had originally bought it in the eighties when it was first published, but had never finished book 2. This time I was adamant about finishing the trilogy. (I didn't realize that there were another three books written even though I own one.) As I was getting close to finishing the second book, I couldn't find the third! Since I was pre-ordering the last Harry Potter book and needed something to get over $25 for free shipping, I figured I might as well re-order the third book. Needless to say, I found the original days after receiving the new copy and before finishing book two, so this book has never been opened. Still, even though the price was double what I originally paid for it, it was worth it. The original series was a very good read. I'm not a fan of Piers Anthony personal beliefs, but I think he's a talented writer. Thank you Piers for a very readable and fun series.

5 out of 5 stars great book for guys.......2006-09-14

Great conclusion to the series I like how his fantasy doesn't get as wordy as a Tolkein book. both excellent writers in their own sense but this book was just right for me.

            5 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile read.......2006-01-14

I picked up this book before the rest of the series for a reading report in High School. I instantly fell in love with the thought of corresponding frames and wished to read the rest of the series. Unfortunatly, for me the excitment went downhill from there. I will always consider this book the best of the series and recomend it to anyone who loves fantasy writings.

5 out of 5 stars Polymorph: Science Fiction Materpiece.......2007-06-13

Imagine that you could change your shape into anything that you wanted, whenever you wanted. But, as far as you know, you are the only one who can. This is how Polymorph, the Sci-fi thriller by Scott Westerfeld, starts.

Lee is a shape-shifter (polymorph) in post-industrial Manhattan, who uses her gifts to live without work, surf clubs, and pick up lovers for one night stands. She sheds names, faces and sexes like the clothing in her elaborate collection. All of that changes when she meets Bonito. Bonito is also a polymorph, but he uses his gifts to manipulate money and power. Together with her true love, Freddie, she must stop Bonito from taking control of Earth's information technology, and thus the earth itself.

This book is very well written. I especially enjoyed Westerfeld's descriptions of when Lee changes shapes, because he describes the changes so vividly that I can picture them in my mind. I also like to think about what in their body would make a person able to do that, because I am a very scientifically minded person, and it fascinates me to think of what happens to the body's tissues and cells to allow the drastic changes, like when she changes genders, to take place.

The theme of this book is that you should never give up trying. This the theme because in the book, Lee thinks that she is the lone polymorph on the face of the planet, but she never stops looking for others like her. She also never stops looking for someone that she really loves, because although she has had more lovers than stars in the sky, none of them really mattered to her. When another polymorph and the love of her life show up, she never gives up trying to track down the polymorph and make the man she loves accept her for who she is.

This book was one of the best sci-fi books that I have ever read. Of Mr. Westerfeld's books that I have read, this is by far my favorite. In this book, he has found equilibrium between plot and action, description and dialogue that adds together to make the book one that I literally could not put down. This book is probably not suitable for those who do not like or are not ready for sexual descriptions and content, because it gets fairly descriptive a number of times. Other than that, this is a five-star book that definitely is worth the read.

                    2 out of 5 stars Weak........2002-01-14

"Polymorph" tells about Lee, a person with incredible powers of Shapeshifting in near-future New York. When I first heard about this book, I was eager to get it. In fact, it was really not easy to hunt it down, but eventually I managed to get my hands on a copy of the book.
Imagine: a person who can change his/her appearance, who can even change their sex. This sounds like a potential amazing novel! However, the story was absolutely silly. It seems the only "use" for this power the author could think of, was for some strange and lame erotic stories! I find it very boring, and ultimately got very disappointed.

But just to give an honest review of the book: the protagonist of the book, Lee, lives a pretty boring life until she encounters another Polymorph - Bonito, who has evil aspirations of power. Lee must find out how to protect herself, and if possible, destroy Bonito!
The book really had so much potential, pity the plot was so unimaginative, and apparently mainly served to bring to print some of the sexual fantasies of the author. To summarize: bad and boring - Check out 'Axiomatic' of Greg Egan, as I could see there some of the elements of this book, written in a much better way.

3 out of 5 stars Great insight into polymorphism, but...........2000-09-23

I found this story quite interesting right up to the intense conclusion which left me a bit cold. I can best compare the feeling to finding one of those large jars that you might discover on the back shelf of an antiques store, filled with a murky liquid and with something not quite right floating in it. An intriguing curiosity but I don't want to get too close!

The characterization was well done. I loved Sam, the deaf super-hacker friend of the hero Freddie. The polymorph, Lee, was very well done and quite believable (within the necessary and somewhat strained suspension of disbelief). I had a problem with Freddie who was well written but was subjected to so many assaults on his friendship and understanding that he must have been superhumanly cool and compasionate.

And now to protagonist Lee, antagonist and devil Bonito, and polymorphism. I've enjoyed other shape changing novels, such as those by Czerneda, but this one gave "genuine" insite into the nature of (Westerfield's) polymorphic beings, and the development of their bizarre abilities. He dwells at some length on their insight into human anatomy and mannerisms, gained in various ways, necessary to convincingly emulate another human.

I guess that I was hoping for a simpler, more uplifting ending, but taking it for what it was I will certainly recommend this book to those seeking insight into yet another extraordinary possibility in the range of beings that might exist.

5 out of 5 stars Very thought provoking.......1999-07-19

A great book that makes you think about gender and identity. The plot was a bit weak in parts, but the characters were extremely interesting. Highly recommended.

                    4 out of 5 stars Very subversive--but I mean that in a good way........1999-06-15

To be perfectly honest, after reading a couple of chapters of "Polymorph", I wasn't sure I that was going to enjoy this book, because I intially found the protagonist's life-style so trite and unappealing. As she begins to search for the other polymorph, I became a little more interested, but still wasn't really blown away by it all. That is, until the last two chapters. The way this book ends is so chilling and so subtly subversive that it redeems practically all that has gone on before. I highly recommend it, just for the unexpectedly viscious little twist at the end.

                              Description:
To characterize silica polymorphs (silicas) in some kaolins, orthophosphoric acid digestion (240^oC, 15min), and thermal treatment (1050^oC, 24h) were applied to eight samples. The original, digested, and heated samples were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Crystalline silica quartz (SiO"2) was identified from the standard XRD patterns of the original kaolins; all contained quartz. On the other hand, hydrated partially crystalline silicas (SiO"2.nH"2O), such as well-ordered opal-C and opal-CT, were not readily distinguished from high-temperature crystalline silica, @a-cristobalite, using standard XRD patterns of the original kaolins because, sharp and intense characteristic XRD peaks (hkl=101) centered near 0.4nm for opal-C, opal-CT, and @a-cristobalite coincided. In order to distinguish these silicas the XRD patterns of the digested and heated samples were evaluated. It was observed that the 101 peaks disappear and sharpen in the course of digestion and heating, respectively. Because, the crystallinity of @a-cristobalite does not change by these treatments, it was concluded that the kaolins contain opal-C and opal-CT or their mixtures in amorphous opal-A (SiO"2.nH"2O), but not @a-cristobalite, which is probably human carcinogen. Because, the crystallinity increases in order opal-CT and opal-C, the narrowing in width at half-maximum peak height (FWHM) 101 must be more for opal-CT than opal-C by heating. Therefore, to distinguish opal-CT and opal-C from each other, the FWHM values before and after the heating process, were examined. Based on the results, it was estimated that six kaolins contain opal-CT in opal-A matrix, one kaolin contains only opal-A in a trace amount, and one kaolin contains non-opals.

                                Description:
The quality assurance of the product during the whole development and manufacturing cycle of pharmaceuticals through increased level of process understanding is the main aspect to be considered within process analytical technology (PAT). Therefore, development of new tools using, e.g., multivariate methods for quality control in different steps of manufacturing process are of great importance. In this context, diffuse reflectance fourier transform infrared (DRIFT-IR) spectroscopy together with multivariate statistical process control (MSPC) analysis, soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA), orthogonal signal correction (OSC) preprocessing and partial least squares (PLS) regression methods were applied to polymorphic characterization of crystalline bulk product. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) was used as a reference technique. The use of several multivariate techniques in rapid evaluation of purity and polymorphic composition of bulk samples is demonstrated. This offers an additional method for quality monitoring of the bulk product after crystallization process within PAT concept.

Nd-YAG laser ablation on Ti target under optimum energy input (0.5-2J /pulse) yielded condensates of anatase and rutile when the oxygen flow rate was 6-20L/min. Minor amounts of dense TiO"2, i.e. @a-PbO"2- and fluorite-type related structures, were formed above 20L/min as identified by analytical electron microscopy. The nanoparticles tended to coalesce over specific (hkl) surface (e.g. (011) of predominant anatase) or arbitrary contact to form a single crystal more or less with dislocations at the interface. The dense TiO"2 formed spherical particulates and faceted nanoparticles about an order of magnitude difference in size. Relatively large particulates were likely formed from liquid eject and tended to transform epitaxially into domains of less dense polymorphs with accompanied shape change during radiant heating and/or electron beam irradiation.

Quantitative analysis method of phase composition of two chlorothalonil polymorphs (alpha and beta) co-existed with each other was studied by X-ray powder diffraction. With the content of polymorph alpha between 1.6% and 98%, the integral area of the strongest peak of polymorph alpha (2@q: 25.5+/-1^o) was not a linear function of its content. In the polymorph alpha matrix the detection limit of polymorph beta (2@q: 26.5+/-0.1^o) was 0.099%, while in the polymorph beta matrix, the detection limit of polymorph alpha was 1.6%. The expressions of the calibration curves were given. The relative density of polymorph alpha and beta was estimated to be equal to 0.90. The calibration curves joined into one linear and went through the origin (95% confidence interval). In the mixtures of the two polymorphs, the limits of prediction of alpha content from the determined integral areas mentioned above were less than +/-0.026 (95% confidence limits). Some phase transformation samples were determined by the means of this quantitative analysis method.

In Change We Must, Nana Veary describes how her family, surroundings, and the ways of an innately spiritual people shaped a lifetime search for the truth. At the core, binding the threads of the story, is the practice of silence and a strong belief in its power.

5 out of 5 stars Too bad there aren't more stars.......2005-12-30

If you are feeling in need of true spiritual inspiration and a look into the heart of aloha, then look no further. This is the type of book that comes along once in a lifetime. I happened across it is a used bookstore a few years ago, and I have never seen its equal. Her writing style is simple and clear, a moving account of her personal journey that also contains amazing insights into Hawaiian culture. BUY THIS BOOK, you won't be dissapointed. In fact, I recommend buying as many copies as possible and giving them away. Everyone I know who has read the book has said that it is at least one of the best books they ever read.

5 out of 5 stars One 5-star book = Joy + Wisdom. Not to mention affirmations!.......2004-01-30

Brugh Joy (a wonderful Kahuna himself) knew Nana and said that she was such an embodiment of the spirit of ALOHA, that when she would stand before a crowd and merely speak that one word "ALOHA", her spirit was so strong that many in the audience would spontaneously begin weeping with joy. Incredible to imagine...but this marvelous little book captures much of that magic.

I am so happy Nana's book has not disappeared from circulation. I found my first copy at a small bookstore in upcountry Maui a decade or so ago, when it was then out of print. I have been particularly enriched by Nana's wisom regarding silence -- and yes, as she claims, one can begin to understand the language of the natural world if one is silent long enough to listen!!

Enjoy this gem from Kahuna Nana!

5 out of 5 stars Nana Veary is a REMARKABLE woman........2002-09-04

This book is an autobiographical story of her search for belief, faith and meaning.

First she was taught the traditional Hawaiian belief, then "christianity (Presbyterian if memory serves)", Science and Mind, Zen Buddhism, and various metaphysical traditions.

If you have a desire to learn about Hawaii, and various practises of Hawaii (working with nature, Ho'oponopono, etc) This is a good beginning, but incomplete.

In my opinion; the Hawaiians had effective prayer down to a science, and were far more spiritually grounded than the bible thumping "christians" that outlawed the spiritual practises of Hawaiians. Two Bears

5 out of 5 stars Passion with Balance.......2001-05-19

When it comes down to the wire, managing change is really all about balance, something the Japanese treasure and express in the art of Zen, and passion. Passion without direction and focus is just a bunch of energy, like an Italian lover. Passion, with focus and balance, can be like a laser beam--very powerful and significant.

The first part of one's life is usually spent chasing success, and the second half chasing significance. Nana's Change We Must is working to see that we all get an early start on the second.
