Book Description
Prentis, the narrator of this nightmarish novel, catalogs "dead crimes" for a branch of the London Police Department and suspects that he is going crazy. His files keep vanishing. His boss subjects him to cryptic taunts. His family despises him. And as Prentis desperately tries to hold on to the scraps of his sanity, he uncovers a conspiracy of blackmail and betrayal that extends from his department and into the buried past of his father, a war hero code-named "Shuttlecock"--and, lately, a resident of a hospital for the insane.

The one I have been looking for........2002-07-26
For the past 40 years or so I have been looking for what I regard, the perfect book. This is it. I found it on my shelf, of all places. It had been sitting there for years ignored and overlooked for the more preferable reads, the bigger-better authors who garner the biggerst audience. Swift is magic. His main character, Prentis, is as I would draw him, ignomatic, real, diabolical. The book has a lurid, eeire feel to it, not creepy, but weird, the way I like it. Easy to follow but not shallow by any means. Anyone who becomes bored by reading Swift is a moron. There is a pile of substance between those simple lines, it just takes a littel intellect to find it.

I found these characters very tedious & unengaging........2001-05-08
Are we even reading the same book? My son's Comp I class was assigned this book, and I tried to read it but didn't get past the first 100 pages. The main character is flat and boring, and he seems intent on sharing his every dull thought. I found this a disappointment and don't think it was a very good choice for a freshman lit class either.
A magnificent book. Grippin, enthralling & completely unique.......1999-09-28
Following Graham Swift's well-deserved successes with Waterland & Last Orders, I'm amazed this book remains virtually unknown. It is one of my all-time favourites, repaying multiple readings.
It works on several levels - as a straight thriller (is the narrator really paranoid? is Quinn insane? what's the truth about Prentice Snr, a mute inmate in a mental hospital), as a wonderfully vivid decriptive novel (Wimbledon, the London underground & Eastern France are all brought to life magnificently), a terrific gallery of characters, a study on family relations, guilt and expectations ... I could go on.
My advice: buy it, read it & pass it on to your friends.

Book Description
“A HUMDINGER . . . A MASTERLY TALE TOLD WITH CLARITY AND VERVE.”
–The Times (London)
The Avatars are immortal and live like kings–even though the empire is dying. Their immortality is guaranteed by magic crystals whose influence is now waning, overwhelmed by the sheer power of a great flood and a sudden ice age. But when two moons appear in the sky, and the ruthless armies of the Crystal Queen swarm across the land bringing devastation and terror, the Avatars unite with their subjects to protect their universe.
As the cities face imminent destruction, three heroes emerge. Talaban, a warrior haunted by tragedy; Touchstone, the mystic tribesman seeking his lost love; and Anu, the Holy One, the Builder of Time. And when all seems lost, two others enter the fray: Sofarita, the peasant girl who will inspire a legend, and the madman, Viruk, who will become a god. . . .

Super Reader.......2007-08-26
The once extremely powerful Avatar race is in decline, and under threat from other areas. If they didn't have enough problems, the Almec invaders turn up and decide they would like some more turf.
Three of the Avatars, a crazy guy, and a girl from a 'lesser race' end up involved in the conflict.
This whole Avatar background is something that could have been explored in a little more depth, with its Atlantean overtones.
The decline of the Avatar empire (an epic tale)..........2006-08-06
This was the first book I read after I found out that my favourite author (the same author of this novel) had passed away at the too-soon age of 57...
I have always loved the poetic title. I think that it is also fitting, for this book has a certain "beauty" to it that is difficult to define. Echoes of the Great Song is a sweeping epic that is set in the decline of a great empire. The empire is of the Avatars, a near immortal race who had discovered the secrets of the "great song" and the ability to harness energy through crystals. An energy that is almost limitless in application, from powering fearsome weapons or vessels, to regenerating ageing or injured tissue.
The Avatars remind me of a book I once read by a maverick historian who speculated on "sound" being used to construct the Egyptian pyramids. He theorised of an ancient civilisation that had discovered technology unused today, but incredibly advanced. An ancient civilisation that was wiped out by an environmental cataclysm. I can't remember his name, but David Gemmell must have also read the book or known of the theory. Because the Avatars are much like that, and they too were destroyed by a natural disaster.
Anyway, all seems to be going reasonably okay for the last of the Avatars who range from the noble and brave (Talaban), to the holy (Anu), the arrogant but strong leader (Raek), the brilliant and ultimately heroic (Ro), and the completely insane and homicidal gardener (Viruk).
But there are also growing rumblings of dissent. There is an internal mystery, a secret organisation determined to destroy the last of the oppressive Avatars, and the rise of new barbarian kingdoms. The Vagar slave class seem destined to rise up and take control for themselves.
Just when you think you know what will happen, the Almecs arrive. These guys are like Aztecs who have discovered gunpowder. They are bloodthirsty and fearsome enemies indeed.
There is much to like about this novel, and not much to dislike. It is a brilliantly constructed tale. It is like a myth that has had life breathed into it. Throughout the book are given snippets of the myth that grew from the story as you read it. The legend that survived with the native-American-like Anajo. It is like watching the fading of a golden age from within.
It is a fine novel to read in memory of its brilliant author, whom I speculate might have based each main Avatar character on an aspect of himself. It is a book of a sunset and a new beginning. In the end, the predominate feeling I was left with after reading Echoes of the Great Song was: hope.
R.I.P. David Gemmell - Aya! When will we see such heroes walk again?
Different and Entertaining, But Not As Good..........2006-04-08
David Gemmell writes another great bit of fantasy with Echoes of the Great Song, but the intriguing characters he includes in his writing were lacking in this book. Gemmell writes fluidly from page to page and chapter to chapter, and it is no different in Echoes of the Great Song.
Talaban commands the only ship of the Avatars, a dying race of people who were devastated by a cataclismic event like that of Atlantis. He is burdened by the changing times and still thinks back to the Avatar civilization, remembering one special woman.
Touchstone longs to be back in the presence of his wife, but he was taken prisoner and has yet to find his way back.
Viruk is a crazed killer, who has a supreme loyalty to his superior, but lusts after blood constantly. He is an interesting mixture, making him a character both liked and hated at the same time.
The remaining Avatars, having lost their civilization, have moved to a different area of the world and taken control of an inferior people. They exert their dominance and influence through power and fear by using their crystals to draw the life out of any who break a law. Their power is absolute so long as they have enough energy in their crystals, but that has been waning for years. With their diminishing power comes a new threat from across the seas called the Almecs, similar to the Avatars. They are led by the Crystal Queen who seeks blood to power her crystals.
Some intriguing ideas are brought into the fold with Echoes of the Great Song, but Gemmell doesn't expound on them as much as he normally did in his other works. The ideas of immortality, absolutism/oligarchy, a class system, and many others are interspersed throughout. Other than some weaker characters and some unresolved ideas, Echoes of the Great Song is still an fun read. Enjoy!
Echoes of a Good Novel.......2005-12-25
Echoes of the Great Song is one of those rare fantasy novels that is a complete stand-alone. It begins and ends in one single volume, so there is no need to settle yourself in for one of those Jordanesque "umpteen volume" series'.
David Gemmell will never be considered a master writer, but whatever deficiencies he lacks in prose and description he more than makes up for in the stories he crafts. To put it simply, he is one of the best modern story-tellers alive. The concepts behind Echoes of the Great Song are certainly unique and it strays from your typical fantasy works. They center on a dying race of Avatars who create themselves "immortality" through a magic derived from crystals. Sadly, their magic and power have waned and they find themselves struggling to maintain their control on the "lesser" races. Without getting into spoilers, it is safe to say that the tale moves at a brisk pace and keeps you turning pages without losing interest. Interestingly, there are some sci-fi elements to the book. In fact, the book creates an uncommon blend of science-fiction and fantasy that that is quite fascinating and unexpected.
As with any good story, there are characters in Echoes of the Great Song that you will love, and others that you will hate. Who could forget Viruk, an unforgiving half-protagonist, half-antagonist that is a killing machine, completely insane, and yet as charming as can be. Every character in Echoes... has depth and a human side. I thoroughly enjoyed the highs and lows of each personality as they struggled internally with the massive change of events that take place in their world.
Echoes of the Great Song is a page turner. It is not meant to blow you away, but rather present you an interesting tale. David Gemmell succeeds in this and I don't believe you will be disappointed picking this one up.
Brilliant premise, average execution.......2005-12-12
I expected more out of Gemmell, one of the most capable writers in the genre. There's nothing wrong with Echoes of the Great Song. It is competently written, almost fantasy-by-rote, but it doesn't linger in the mind once the last page is read. In my opinion, it is dispassionate and impersonal. The characters never become more than the sum of their deeds. Everyone is a hero, and by midway the plot seems more concerned with their heroism--which is predictable--than the characters' inner workings. Internal conflict and tension are missing. Everyone teams up too readily. At least one of the characters should have struggled to accept the new world order. Viruk, for example, is a warrior who craves blood. Why doesn't he at first welcome the Almecs because they are a warrior race? I give Gemmell kudos for an original premise, but he doesn't do enough with it. For instance, the nature of evil is debated; however, the Avatars quickly label the Almecs evil while resolving their own evil nature. Why are the Almecs evil? They are superior beings, and they slaughter inferior beings for survival in the same way that humans slaughter livestock for survival. I believe that Gemmell could have explored the issue more extensively. If you're a Gemmell fan, you'll want to read this novel and you won't be disappointed; however, if you want to read provocative, engaging fantasy, pick up a different Gemmell novel.

The Magic of the Chicken Soup For the Soul Series.......2007-07-17
I've read quite a number of Jack Canfield's Chicken Soup For the Soul series, so you can imagine my delight when I found out that there was a book dedicated to us feline fans...I've had cats all my life, so many of the stories contained in this book I can identify with. So many of the stories in this book are bittersweet, and any cat lover will see themselves in these pages...Also, I highly recommend having a box of tissues handy while reading this book.
Great book for cat lovers!.......2007-07-05
Never read a chicken soup book but I heard how great they were. I loved this book! If you are a cat lover, you should definitely get this book for yourself or as a gift for someone else.
A Must for Cat Lovers.......2007-03-26
I received this book from my vet after I had to put my cat to sleep because of cancer. At first I couldn't read the book because I cried after reading each story. After a few weeks I decided to try again and started reading. I still cried, but this book made me realize just how much love and companionship is offered by our four-legged friends, and how much I really appreciated the time I had with my cat. This is must for all cat lover's.

Customer Reviews:
Finally!.......2003-04-09
Being a Black female and a huge fan of romance books, I rarely find Regency/Midevel romances dealing with Black characters. In fact, when one reads most romance books dealing with these time periods, it's as if Blacks were non-existent. Finally a book where there are several Black characters and they are portrayed beautifully! At first I was leery of how Camille (Jack's mulatto mistress) would be portrayed but I was more than happy to see that the relationship between the two was not cheapened and that Jack truly cared for her. The romance that blooms between Esme and Mr. Shropsley...well, I won't get into all of that but I will say I was happy with this book and would love to see more novels featuring a variety of ethnic characters. The story itself was wonderful. I loved Priscilla's character. She was truy a wonderful, charming, very likable woman. I disagree with another reader concerning that little escapade that Jack has with Vivienne. Jack was under a spell and this just went to show how powerful the magic was that held him. I think it read very well. I highly recommend this book!
An Ugly Duck Story that Fails to Enthrall or Convince.......2000-06-08
Jack Cantrell is living the good life in the Carribean with his Creole mistress, Camille, when he receives word that his brother has died and he's now the Earl of Something-or-other. Her head dancing with images of jewels and simpering peons, Camille tells Jack he really MUST go back home and face his familial responsibilities. Then come back to her with the jewels, of course. And, not one to take any chances, Camille makes certain Jack will not forget her when surrounded by those tempting English misses (yeah, right) by giving him a locket filled gris-gris (a.k.a. the lover's charm).
Jack dutifully sails back to cold, depressing England and gets the infinite pleasure of living with his totalitarian aunt and spinster cousins, one of whom is more a few bricks short of a full load. The story degenerates from there, along with Jack's life.
The writing here is fine, but the story drags on needlessly, especially the last hundred pages when Jack does something so despicable, I personally could never have forgiven him for it, and the fact that heroine does is absolutely infuriating. Although he does have his moments, Jack (who is the character readers will spend most of their time with) was not likable, and the romance between him and the bishop's daughter is unconvincing. I find it especially hard to believe Jack could love anyone, considering how much he hates himself.
Simply put, this book was an exercise in patience to read and way too long, and the romance and plot were not as interesting as they should, or could, have been. While I have enjoyed this author's other novels, THE LOVER'S CHARM misses the mark.
Plenty for romance readers to love in a "charming" story..........2000-05-24
"Devil" Jack Cantrell was banished to the Windward Islands years ago by his aristocratic English father. Now Jack has come to love his "punishment" - he lives an idyllic life in the tropics supported by the wealth produced by his skillful management of the family's island estates. And, Jack adores his beautiful and enterprising mistress, Camille, who is the proprietor of the island's best establishment of, er, pleasure. But Jack's paradise is shattered by the appearance of the family barrister, Bennett Shropley, who brings news of the death of Jack's elder brother, the irresponsible wastrel Robert, Earl of Avenleigh. Mr. Shropley implores Jack to return to England and assume his new title, and the accompanying responsibilities, but Jack is reluctant to give up his island life. Eventually, at Camille's urging, Jack agrees to a temporary return to England. Before he leaves, Camille places a specially created "lover's charm" around Jack's neck, so that he will not forget her.
"Devil" Jack discovers upon his return to England that there are quite a few people who want something from the new Earl! The solicitor Bennett Shropley expects Jack to return the depleted Avenleigh estates to prosperity. The British government wishes to speak with the new Earl about the matter of a few back taxes owed them. Jack finds that along with the Avenleigh estate house, he has inherited the care of a malevolent widowed aunt and her two spinster daughters (one who may be just a LITTLE crazy). Robert's former mistress, the beautiful and avaricious Lady Vivienne Harpool, wishes to renew her relationship with her childhood friend "Jackie". And then there is Robert's former fiancee, Miss Priscilla Wilcox...
When Jack first meets the weepy and plain Priscilla, a bishop's daughter, he cannot understand what his brother saw in her. But as Jack gets to know Priscilla, he begins to respect and admire her for her intelligence, wit, and kindness, and then wonders what she ever saw in Robert. For her part, Priscilla initially wants nothing to do with another Cantrell man, but she too begins to admire Jack as she sees him fulfilling his new responsibilities as Earl of Avenleigh. And, there is the fact that he is "as handsome as the devil". Priscilla refuses to think of Jack romantically, though, especially because she knows that she is no competition for the flashy Lady Vivenne. But then, Jack gives Priscilla a birthday kiss that leaves her breathless, and she begins to fall for him...
Despite many distractions, Jack still holds fast to his plan to return to Camille (is it the charm...?). But just before Jack embarks on his voyage back to the islands, Camille's maid Esme shows up at Avenleigh with several surprises, and everyone's life is turned upside down...
I loved this book! The story was wonderful, with lots of clever twists and turns. Just when I thought a situation was about to be resolved one way, something else happened. The characters were great too, so many, so well written, and so very believable. I still don't know who I like the most - Jack, Priscilla, Esme, or Agnes - or who I liked the least (that Lady Vivienne, ohhh!). Add in a few sweet love scenes, a touch of island magic, and you have a stellar read. Miss Hingston is now one of my favorites and I look forward to her next novel.
Entertaining.......2000-05-02
This book was hard to put down, loved the heroine.
This book is a "must" for romance novel readers........1999-08-26
Your novels are wonderful. They remind me of the books I liked so much by Mallory Burgess. Keep writing!!!

"LOVE Potions and Charms" is Grand!!!.......2002-03-13
I bought this book a few months ago and have since used quite a few of the spells and recipes in there. I especially love the Love Salad recipe. I make this salad and enjoy it's potency often. I have had several of my friends and coworkers comment on the aroma of it and asking me what it is whenever I eat it and they have all agreed that it is one of the best smelling (and the ones who have tried it themselves) and tasting salads they have ever tried. I had a friend of mine look through it themselves and use the Bed of Roses spell in there for her and her spouse and it completely helped to bring them closer together. He had not ever really opened up to her much prior and after she did it, he starting opening up to her more and they have become closer since. I myself have made the Chypre perfumed oil in there and have enjoyed it's sensual scent, I've even had others comment on it and they love it when I tell them where I got it from. I continue to try many of the other spells and recipes in this book and love every moment of putting my energy in to doing so. I really recomend this book for anyone looking for one that gives you a variety of "Love" ideas to try out or work on. It's one of the best books for this that I have ever found!!! =)
Serious potions and healing lotions!.......2002-01-29
The reviewer who gave this book 2 stars complained that it had taught him nothing new. So he already had the ancient Chinese recipe for Horny Goatweed wine? I was greatly impressed at the wealth of unusual information available in this book, particularly with regard to traditional aphrodisiacs (the ones that haven't been made illegal at least), their preparation and uses. It even has a useful list of suppliers in the back. I found the book witty, knowing, touching and inspiring. I even discovered a herbal cure for dry and itchy skin that really worked! I plan to roadtest some of the most intriguing love philters as soon as I have found a worthy lovemate - which, with the help of this book, I suspect won't be too long.
Love Potions and Charms! I don't think so!.......2001-03-27
Don't waste you money. I thought I could become a more powerful seducer. But I did not learn anything new! We ALL know that chocolate and alchol are aphrodisiacs. I gave this book a 2 because the artwork and layout saved it! Beautiful pictures of herbs, and things, but if you want to learn to seduce, look some place else.
Book Description
Exploring Spirituality and Culture in Adult and Higher Education is written from the unique perspective of teacher, researcher, and author Elizabeth Tisdell who has extensive experience dealing with culture, gender, and educational equity issues in secular adult and higher education classrooms, and formerly in pastoral and religious education settings on college campuses. This important book discusses how spiritual development is informed by culture and how this knowledge is relevant to teaching and learning. For educators, an understanding of how spirituality is informed by culture, and how spirituality assists in meaning-making, can aid in their efforts to help their students' educational experiences become more transformative and culturally relevant.
Customer Reviews:
Great ideas for exploring culture in the classroom.......2007-01-24
I have used Dr. Tisdell's book in several university courses over the past three years. She brings to light the need for recognizing and honoring the cultural diversity that makes up American and global classrooms. I have adapted exercises in her book for use in a range of course topics. The idea of building cultural awareness and sharing cultural beliefs, regardless of course subject matter, has created a new depth in course work that has been very well received by students. The content in "Exploring Spirituality and Culture in Higher Education," helps the process of building inclusive communities, while fostering richer discussions and understanding. I recommend this book to every educator and their students.
