Rhinestone Cowboy.......2006-10-17
This book was great. Glen does not beat around the bush he tells it all as it was!
He does not sugarcoat anything. He tells us about the drugs and how it took him down. he tells us about the women such as Tayna. He also tells us about Sara Davis and how she left her husband Mac Davis for him. And how bad that realtionship was. It is a book filled with the hard cold truth about fame and how it can tear you down if you get a big head like Glen did. I am Glad that Glen got back on track with his life. I wish now Mac Davis would write a book I am a Mac fan as well.
Maybe more than you want to know........2001-07-28
Campbell's book blows the lid off the glamour and aura that surround celebrities, revealing how decadent, arrogant and immature he and many of his fellow stars became, thanks to abuse of cocaine and alcohol. Naturally, Campbell's children paid the highest price. It is interesting to read how his parents never compromised on their values despite their poverty, yet he succumbed to substance abuse while having everything he'd ever dreamed of. His fast life certainly clashed with the timeless beauty of his music.
While he chronicles his personal decline, however, he never really discusses his professional decline. After "Southern Nights" hit No. 1, his Top 40 career went south, ironically just as other pop/country crossover artists like Ronnie Milsap, Kenny Rogers and Eddie Rabbitt were beginning to take off. He remained a chart contender in country until about 1990. His efforts to keep selling records and open doors at radio would have been interesting to read. It would also have been interesting to know what, if anything, many of his most famous songs meant to him. The discography would have been more informative had it included dates and chart positions.
Campbell's excellent taste in music is evident in the classics he recorded during the late 60's and early 70's. But some of his most self-congratulatory moments in the book come when he gushes about his bagpipe rendition of "Amazing Grace" and his annoying habit of inviting various not-famous family members on stage to jam with him. Having witnessed these peculiarities in person, I can say that these are not the high points of his show.
This book will answer some questions and inspire those who have followed his career. Reading about his childhood is especially enlightening. But Gen-Xers like me who learned about him from hearing his oldies on the radio may prefer blissful ignorance about some aspects of his career. I didn't particularly need to know about his stints in Vegas or his memories of cornballs like the Smothers Brothers, Pat Paulsen and Buck Trent.
A Load of Compromising on the Road to his Horizon.......2001-05-26
Glen Campbell has lived a very interesting life-some good and some bad. His autobiography does not hold back on either portion. From his impoverished Arkansas childhood through his many tumultuous marriages and country music superstardom to his regret-free faded status and ultimate peace, Glen lays it all on the (Wichita) line.
While he does not gloss over his own flaws, the dirty linen of some other players-most notably Tanya Tucker is likewise held up for all to see. Arguably, he should have been less open in revealing maligning details about her, but their relationship kept tabloid readers engrossed for years and it legitimately was a salient chapter in his life. Furthermore, he does not condemn Tanya despite attributing less than wholesome motivations to her interest in him. He seems very sincere when he writes of his one-time paramour "I'm inclined to pray for the woman with whom I shared a poisoned relationship. I have since found another love that offers not the threat of death but the promise of eternal life. I pray that Tanya might find that too."
As Glen experienced his twilight maturation, he achieved the rank of solid citizen. Becoming a Branson regular appropriately accentuates his embrace of Christianity and advocacy of traditional values. By spelling out his staunch opposition to abortion and opposing special rights for homosexuals, he takes some daring positions for a celebrity tell-all, but it is refreshing to see a performer courageously step out of rigid show biz boundaries.
One unintended drawback concerns some details of his childhood. Glen is to be commended for the tremendous respect he displays toward his parents and also for admitting his failures as a father to his older children-even accepting significant blame for his middle-aged son's drug problems. However, he relates some paternal behavior that shows his father possessed a cruel streak. From his laudatory portrayal it is easy to see that was not the image he wanted to present, and he would probably disagree with such an assessment. A more prudent tactic would have been to remain mum on some of these mean actions.
Overall, "Rhinestone Cowboy" is a well-orchestrated rendition of a child born into poor Southern Nights but who eventually went "riding out on a horse in a star-spangles rodeo."

Trashiest gay novel I ever read.......2005-06-18
RHINESTONE COUNTRY was - by far - the trashiest gay novel I've ever read. I could hardly put it down.
The 21st Century's Greatest Homoerotic Novel.......2003-04-03
Over the years I've bought books by the hundreds. But to tell the truth, very few have captured my imagination as much as Darwin Porter's Rhinestone Country. It's true: I bought it for the sexy cover, and there's plenty of sex here--more than the average reader can handle. But what I found was that I got caught up in the storyline. Peter Riddle and his sons, along with long-suffering Rosacoke Carson, lived an incredible story that began in the months before World War II and stretched all the way from Nashville to Hollywood in the decades that followed. Pete and Rosacoke exploded into show business like Elvis. But the tale fed to their adoring public concealed closeted, tragic, but always exciting lives, none more so than what happened to their son Buster. Even though it's not set in New York or Hollywood, Rhinestone Country is the most exciting show business novel I've ever read, and I've devoured dozens. It is also the most compelling bedtime tale I can recommend to any hot-blooded male. If you like sex, but sex with a compelling story, rush out to buy this one. It's hot, hot and hotter!
where do they get this stuff?.......2003-02-24
yuck, blech, couldn't get it in the trashcan fast enough.
Note.......2002-11-28
Before country super star Pete Riddle's untimely death, he made women swoon, but it was the male groupies he adored. Any male-- he begins to love his teenage sons just a little too much. And his wife gives new meaning to the phrase "Stand By Your Man." Guess which C&W star from the 40s Darwin Porter based his singing superstud on!
Nostalgia and erotica in the Deep South.......2002-11-18
Lots of authors have eulogized the Deep South, but very few have ever done so with as rich a sense of irony and homo-eroticism as Darwin Porter. And until now, none of them have ever looked at male sexual bonding against a backdrop of the (till now) notoriously heterosexual country-western music industry.
Ironies like this, and more,[come] together in the lushly evocative pages of RHINESTONE COUNTRY, where a social history of the states south of the Mason-Dixon line, beginning just before World War II and stretching into the 90s, is presented with love, respect, and penetrating insight.
RHINESTONE COUNTRY pays homage to the women who stood by their men, regardless of their same-sex philandering, through bouts in prison, on the war fronts of Europe prior to the D-Day invasion, and into the country-western spotlight as represented by Pete Riddle's success at the Grand Old Opry in Nashville. His moniker as "the sexiest man alive" doesn't hurt during his rise to stardom--but will the sexual and inter-racial aspects of his promiscuity be tolerated by his fans?
Read this book for an intense and unusual point of view about sex and society of the Deep Deep South, and the deceits that keep spinning out of its closets. RHINESTONE COUNTRY is a brilliant primer for Yankees who are learning about closeted Gay Lives of the South for the first time. Even better, it's an erotic slap-session for Southerners who might already be familiar with its venues.

:).......2002-02-26
From the back...
He'd kissed her in the twilight and Liz's young heart had been lost forever. Now, thirty years later, Guy Heller was back in town, and the widowed Liz Babcock, respected music teacher, pillar of the community, seemed powerless to resist the magnetism of a hard-living, thrice-divorced country crooner. Her beau, Martin Avery, was shattered. Liz's mother wasn't speaking to her. Her daughters were horrified. Throughout Claro County, scandal swirled around Liz Babcock and her Rhinestone Cowboy.
My Opinion...
Liz and Guy's love survive thirty years of being separated from each other. They have both lived, loved, and lost. However, now Guy is back and he wants Liz. It is not hard for the reader to feel the ... attraction that practically leaps off the page. It is sad that Martin Avery loses Liz, but he gains so much from an unexpected woman. As for the rest of the town and Liz's family in particular, they acted like selfish, self-centered children. For heaven sakes they were all worried about themselves instead of Liz. Poor Guy has had a terrible childhood and things did not get better as he has gotten older. Guy seems to have no one to turn to except Liz. I was excited by the pairing of these two characters because they seem so right for each other. The only problem I had with this book was the decision by the authors of this series to do what they did to Jeff, Beverly's fiancee. Their story was in an earlier book. I feel cheated somehow because I invested myself into their relationship by reading their story, only to have it end the way it did in this book. You will just have to read this yourself to know what I mean. Putting the situation with Jeff aside I must admit that I enjoyed this book and it was a great addition to the series.

Tough-as-nails Morn Hyland, pirate-turned-cyborg Angus Thermopyle, and the whole crew from the United Mining Company Police are back in the final book of the Gap series, This Day All Gods Die. The Gap plot has raced through the galaxy at breakneck speeds, and the conclusion is no exception.
Morn, her alien-grown son Davies, geneticist/engineer Vector Sheed, competent Mikka, and her cabin-boy brother Ciro wait aboard Trumpet. Angus lies unconscious, possibly in permanent stasis. Ciro plots to destroy the ship, driven insane by the knowledge that alien mutagens have been shot into him by Nick Succorso's sworn enemy, Sorus Chatelaine. Following nearby, Min Donner, faithful head of the UMCP Executive Division, watches the action and grits her teeth aboard Captain Dolph's battle-fatigued Punisher. Will Morn trust her? Will her voice commands over Angus's programming prevail? Who has survived the strange journey and battles since leaving the Lab? Back at United Mining headquarters, the Dragon and UMCP Chief Warden Dios's strange, twisted duel of manipulation, assassination, and corruption comes to a head when an Amnion warship sets course for Earth... and that's just the first few pages.
Get set for more of the action, betrayal, characterizataion, intrigue, corruption, and adventure you've enjoyed in the previous Gap books. If it has been a few years since you read the last installment, you may have trouble remembering some names and particularly insidious points of plot and government intrigue; you may even be tempted to reread the preceding books. Also troubling is Angus's continual rumination of a couple phrases, including "We've committed a crime against your soul" and "It's got to stop." However, you may be reading so fast you won't notice.

The Gap into Ruin.......2006-04-21
Donaldson certainly set a challenge for himself. The Gap series is one of the major achievements of speculative fiction, and the second, third and fourth books would easily make any list of the ten best science fiction novels of all time. In the fifth book, then, Donaldson somehow had to top the intensity of excitement of the previous volumes, while keeping everything coherent and logically consistent.
The first big plot twist is that the Amnion defensive Calm Horzions takes a turn for Earth. Armed with super-light proton cannon, it could easily blast most of the planet. Having the bulk of the human race as hostages, the Amnion are in a strong position to negotiate, but their first demand takes everybody completely by surprise. Meanwhile the other event that readers have been waiting for, the showdown between Holt Fasner and the civil government, unfolds slowly but surely at Suka Bator. The tension surrounding both plotlines rises steadily throughout the book, reaching a spectacular dual climax at the end. The conclusion will satisfy any fan of the series, in addition to retroactively explaining the mysterious events from earlier in the series.
The problem, as you might guess just by looking at the book, is wordiness. There are some points where we seem to be getting two paragraphs of psychological analysis for every one paragraph of action. This makes the book thick, nearly seven hundred pages, but it's only a minor distraction from the good stuff at the end.
Weak start, Strong middle, Long ending.......2005-11-28
I thought this series started relatively weakly but got stronger in the 3rd and 4th books. The last book delivers a very drawn out finish with the goddies triumphing. This book was just too long and too predictable. Indeed, compared to the previous books, this one was very boring. I got sick and tired of reading about each and every character's internal conflicts, emotional states, etc. Thank god I finally finished it. If all of Donaldson's books are like this one I won't be reading another one.
Thrilling series.......2005-09-06
You won't be buying this book, most likely, unless you've read the previous books in the series. If you haven't read the first books, read them! This is a great sci-fi series, featuring Donaldson's unique writing style and many strong characters. Anyone who enjoys fiction will enjoy this series.
Worst SF I've ever read.......2005-07-14
But the best sleep aid I've ever found. After reading the reviews, I thought I'd really like this book. But the plot development is glacial, the character's so pendantic, that out of sheer determination I finished the book (and find the obvious ending that bad guy Holt dies and Angus kills him and the world is saved and Morn gets a medal and a pardon- no, can't make this bad stuff up).
My advice. If you are interested in this bloated book, read every 20th page. I kid-you-not that you miss nothing other than time wasted from your life.
Obviously the author was paid by the word. If one would suffice, twenty were used....
Do NOT buy this book unless you have no imagination and have eons of time to kill in worthless pursuit of entertainment.
If I could rate this "book" a zero, I would...
I HATED THIS BOOK!
Fantastic.......2004-10-27
The Gap series is even better than Thomas Covenant, gripping throughout and very thought provoking.

Book Description
Damon Lathe and his blackcollar combat team were sent to capture five hidden Nova-class warships from under the Ryqril conquerors' snouts. Against all odds they had succeeded , sharing their prize with the Terran Democratic Empire's erstwhile Chryselli allies, who were themselves the current focus of Ryqril aggression. Lathe had followed that by successfully entering Earth's last mountain war-era fortress and found a small resistance movement's final project: a drug called Whiplash, which could break the supposedly unbreakable Ryqril loyalty-conditioning. Now they face their most serious challenge. On one of the conquered human colony worlds is a Ryqril tactical center through which flows an entire sector's worth of military data. If the blackcollars can find a way inside, it could tip the balance in the current Ryqril-Chryselli war. It could even start humanity on the path back to ultimate freedom. But the Ryqril aren't sitting idly by. Under threat of reprisals against his world, Prefect Jamus Galway of Plinry is already on the case. His plan: to turn the blackcollars and their combat skill into unknowing tools of the Ryqril. His hidden ace: a clone duplicate of Lathe's ally Allan Caine, ready to be slipped into Lathe's inner circle. It will be the blackcollars' most important mission. It may also be their last.

Pleasant conclusion (?) to the series.......2007-04-15
Timothy Zahn is best known for his Star Wars books. He has written other Science Fiction books. My favorite Timothy Zahn story is "Pawn's Gambit" published in Analog in 1982. It was a Hugo nominee and was republished in Distant Friends and Others.
The Blackcollar stories were in a universe where humans were conquered by the Ryqril. Once conquered it is hard for humans to rebel. The Ryqril were able to develop a drug which turns humans into slaves. The Judas Solution is the third in the series.
The heroes in the story are Blackcollars, men who have been given a special drug which makes them excellent fighters. Their reflexes are twice as fast as the average human. They also have extensive training. There is a lot of martial arts fighting.
In The Judas Solution the heroes travel back to Earth and to Khala. On Earth the Blackcollars are trying to strengthen the resistance. They have a drug which counteracts the Ryqril slave drug. But the resistance has stayed very passive. It takes some time before the Blackcollars understand why the resistance hasn't done more. On Khala the Blackcollars are trying to destroy a Ryqril complex, but the Blackcollars have their own hidden agendas.
The Judas Solution is the third book in the series. It could be the conclusion, but it does open up new plot lines. If you enjoyed the earlier Blackcollar stories, this is worth reading. If you haven't read the first two, my suggestion is you read the earlier two books before reading this one.
Zahn returns in high form to complete the Blackcollar trilogy.......2007-01-30
Despite the fact that there's a 20-year gap between The Backlash Mission and this book, it is truly a seamless transition. It's amazing how seamless it really is. I read all three Blackcollar books a row and it didn't feel like there was any break at all. This book starts up like book 2 came out last year.
Zahn wraps up the Blackcollar series in an interesting way. The writing is solid. He does a great job of balancing all the different points of view. And he does a commendable job with the action scenes, as usual. There aren't too many of his cool trademarked phrases this time ("he cocked an eyebrow," "pursed his lips," "Point"), but it still feels like pure Zahn.
The Ryqril dialogue is an interesting touch. I struggled with it initially. But if you read it slowly and figure out the pattern, you'll do fine. It gives the book a unique flavor and really distinguishes the aliens.
The book itself is pretty good. I liked the font size. The paper quality isn't the best but it's satisfactory.
I would certainly advise reading the first two Blackcollar books before this one. You'll get a lot more out of it this way. And if you've read those two, definitely read this one. It's very close to the first Blackcollar book in terms of its high quality. Excellent work.
A Zahn Great!.......2006-10-12
Timothy Zahn is one of my favorite sci-fi authors, but his quality has been decreasing somewhat as of late (Manta's Gift and Angelmass for instance). But this new edition to the Blackcollar series was superb!
"The Judas Solution" would be an enjoyable read without reading the previous Blackcollars. However, the story is fairly complicated and it continues right where the others left off, so I would highly recommend that you read them first - they are great! It had been awhile since I had read them and it took me a few chapters to remember what had gone on and who was who.
This book had lots of twists and a deep plot, it also wrapped up the series nicely. I would recommend it to anyone who likes action sci-fi.
Blackcollar: The Judas Solution.......2006-07-03
I read this book and enjoyed it. It strained the "suspension of disbelief" a few times and used a couple of the subplots from the previous book. That being said I enjoyed reading the book and that is what its all about.
20 Years Too Late And Too Little.......2006-05-23
I have waited on this book for 20 years. Timothy Zahn's last Blackcollar book was written and published in 1986. I wish I could say it was worth the wait!!! I WISH I could give it 5 stars but I am stretching it to give 3 stars. I have read the first 2 books at least 10 times and even bought the hard back copy so I could continue to read them when I need a little "Derring Do" in my life. In the first two books all of the characters were fully developed and Mr. Zahn made you care about what happened to them. No so much in this book. The character were pretty lackluster, there was none of the drama of the first two books between the characters. In fact there was no real tension between any of the characters except the aliens. In this book although he tied up a lot of loose ends and the Humans finally rid the TDE of the EVIL aliens, it was more of a "What the Hell, lets leave the poor humans alone" instead of the Good Guys defeating the Bad Guys. Also in the first books the Ryqril were supposedly the fiercest of warriors and even a "Blackcollar" hesitated about taking one on in a hand-to-hand fight. But in this book five, six and more were killed by individual Blackcollars. And this was treated as"Eh no big deal - business as usual"'
Jamus Galway's plan: to turn the Blackcollars and their combat skill into unknowing tools of the Ryqril was OK but to think that he could do so on a permanent basis was "too hard to swallow" Also having the clone Judas act as a spy was very original but the clone played a Very small role in the book. Basically he stood around and let everyone do everything. He didn't even make a very convincing spy.
I am sure that if I were new to the books and just now reading all three together then my opinion might be different. But after waiting 20 years for the good guys to win, I felt it was too little, too late.

Thought Provoking.......2007-01-10
I so enjoyed my copy of "Diligently Seeking God" that I purchased copies for everyone in the family this past Christmas. This little book is easy to pick up, read and meditate on the well-written articles. Gary Henry has an obvious deep love and faith in our Lord and it shows on every page. I highly recommend this to anyone to use as a daily devotional. It will inspire you to pick up your Bible and study further. Thank you Gary for an inspirational book!
Meditative Moments for Reflection.......2006-10-01
"Let us not look back in anger or forward in fear, but around in awareness." ~James Thurber
Gary Henry presents daily moments for reflections in "Diligently Seeking God" where we can find inspiration for any day of the year. September 30 is titled: "On Not Missing the Moment."
Here we find three paragraphs exploring a perspective on time, ideas from the apostle Paul and Jesus' perspective on the future. A verse begins each page and then the paragraphs are followed by a wise quote.
Some of the selections include enlightening information on:
Our Deepest Need, Our Greatest Reward
The Joy of Fulfilling Our Purpose
The Ultimate Paradigm
Silence and Solitude
Inner Strength, Inner Light
Gary Henry presents his thoughts along with biblical wisdom and inspirational quotes. I especially loved the quote by David Smith: "The love of God is the ultimate reality, the deepest and strongest force in the universe; and it is revealed to the man who resolutely girds himself to the conflict."
~The Rebecca Review
Daily seeking God.......2006-08-13
This daily devotional book is a wonderful help when you are seeking to truly walk with God every day.
awesome.......2003-09-23
This book was given to me as a gift when I was struggling with the reality of God and with my spirituality. This book helped me immensely.I have given it to at least 7 other people and I believe every one of those people loved it and gave it to 4 or 5 of their friends. This is an awesome book .It is hard to read one day at a time beccause you don't want to put it down !!
Straight to the Heart.......2003-04-28
Scripture tells us time and again that we're a forgetful people. It's with this premise that Gary Henry presents a devotional for each day of the year to seek after God. He by-passes writing on extraneous Religious rituals/details and cuts right to the heart of the matter. Hence, the title, Diligently Seeking God.
Each devotion is preceded with a scripture verse, and concludes with a passage from some of the great spiritual writers of the past, as well as the present (E. M. Bounds, Nouwen, Merton, Thomas A Kempis, Francois Fenelon, Brother Lawrence, etc.).
Henry uses the pillars of faith and trust to explore our relationship with God, and expounds from there.
This isn't "light fluff" reading, like so many contemporary evangelical books these days, but rather, very much in the tradition of Oswald Chambers. Since this is the case, each page often requires a day of reflection to meditate and act on.
A very solid and meaty devotional, we're fortunate Henry will be following it up in the future with more of the same.
