Book Description

Still recovering from the death of her co-worker and lover, Tara Chace is granted a brief reprieve from London's rain and MI6's bureaucracy. This emotionally charged vacation takes Chace to the slopes of Switzerland for a visit with old friends and family. But being an agent for Her Majesty's Secret Intelligence Service leaves little time for rest. A junior minister with close ties to the Prime Minister appears to be selling state secrets to the Russians, and the Minders are assigned to quietly investigate. Tara is forced to walk a tight rope between the violent dangers inherent in the field of espionage and the discretion inherent in the bureaucracy of the government, all the while assuming the new position of Minder One and field-testing a new agent. Operation: Saltlick takes the Special Section from the safety and comfort of Great Britain to the St. Petersburg underworld.

5 out of 5 stars Another Q&C success!.......2005-05-15

Could this simply be the finest work in the Q&C ouevre? The drama is tight, the action is hot, you want to beat the crap out of the wanker "C", and you want to fall in love with Tara Chace (forget that she's just ink on paper). The vulnerability of the female character is exceptionally rendered visually and intellectually. The prologue should help explain some of Chace's behavior as she encounters her overbearing, sexually loose mother. It doesn't completely, and at first I found it off-putting this was included in the overall arc, but the full story overcame this small shortfall. Rucka continues to portray Chace's female character with sensitivity that most secret agents do not get as they are, usually, beyond pain, grief, and failure. Could a male character fill Chace's boots? I don't care and hope Rucka never attempts to find out.

I bought this when we first moved to the West, so I would sound like a local! It's a great reference book, and explains the differences between vaqueros, cowboys, cowpunchers, and buckaroos. A fun read.

Cute book for the novice cowboy and cowgirl--entertaining reading for the "real thing". Well written and technically correct--great pictures and illustrations. Obviously written by one who knows the cowboy way. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A true gem! A spellbinding piece of literature!.......2007-06-05

This book is a marvelous tale of a journey of a stolen saddlebag which changes everyone who comes into contact with its mysterious and mystical contents. Nakhjavani does an exquisite job of showing different perspectives and sharing the lives of the diverse peoples who inhabited the Middle East 150 years ago. The Saddlebag is not for the faint of heart. It is an artistic accomplishment which should be savored.

I have given away over five copies of this book to friends, relatives and colleagues. When given the proper introduction, this book is quite well received and appreciated.

2 out of 5 stars Too scattered and sketchy.......2006-07-08

While I found the premise interesting, I simply couldn't feel emotionally connected with any of the characters in this book. Although they are described in detail they are still too much like caricatures to elicit any sympathy or understanding. Possibly because the author doesn't have the time or space to expand on each character - every chapter is based on a different character in the story - there is no real exploration of their motives and they come across as quite cliched. The setting was a good choice - a pilgrimage through the desert with Muslims making the Hajj, traders and a bridal procession, but not enough was done with it or maybe the cast of characters was just too large. Perhaps if the author had concentrated on two or three characters instead then the story might have been more meaningful and engrossing. The saddlebag itself was not enough to hold all this together for me.

5 out of 5 stars A Pearl in the Sea of Published Crap.......2003-04-25

The book is excellent: fantastically well written, with an interesting story from different characters' perspectives. The story stands alone very nicely and is even better, like an onion, has many layers for the person who has a well-rounded knowledge of world religions.

4 out of 5 stars Sheba the slave.......2001-12-08

There was a slave trade throughout the world at the time. I was not surprised to find a slave from "Abyssinia". I am sure there were slaves in the middle-east who were Ethiopians as there were slaves from may other countries. The author could have chosen another country in her own neighborhood; but she did not.

Ethiopia is called Abyssinia by Europeans who do not want to accept its existence in antiquity. The fact she called it Abyssinia instead of Ethiopia is the first indication of her European upbringing (I probably should said her immersion into the European culture.) She gave her slave character the nickname "Sheba" probably equating a queen of Ethiopia to a slave. She also made her a Falasha (An Ethiopian Jew) probably to denigrate Jews without offending the ones in Europe and America. She could have chosen a middle eastern Jew but then she had to imagine a slave that is not of African origin. The natural choice is to find a black Jew. And where does on find a black Jew in those days? Ethiopia, (her Abyssinia) of course.

She made Sheba beautiful; at first. She must have seen some beautiful Ethiopians in London or some U.S cites. However, she could not swallow even that unintentional compliment that she had to introduce smallpox in order to make her ugly. Maybe it wasn't so unintentional. Sheba had to sleep with her master who happened to be a Zoroastrian from eastern Persia. And how can this person from such dignified race sleep with an ugly black slave?

Peter the great had more respect to an Ethiopian in real life than this author in a novel. Any way, all this did not bother me as much as the next two sentences in one of her chapters about this poor slave.

" By the time she was fourteen, she was stunningly beautiful, with alabaster skin and jewelled eyes. Her maid (that is Sheba the slave) adored her with a blind devotion known only to dogs."

Well, the fact that this author writes in English for the benefit of English speaking people shows her loyalty to the English culture. Such loyalty can not even be matched by a dog.

5 out of 5 stars A Titanic for the desert!.......2001-01-26

Nakhjavani's story is simple enough to be a short story or a fable, as the title suggests. The characters are, at first glance, simple, too. But, as the title suggests, each is a seeker, a doubter, or both. And each brings a diversity and depth to the story that is hard to find in other books. The main event in the fable is told over and over again, each time from a different perspective, each time from the point of view of a different seeker or doubter. With each telling, the event moves forward and becomes deeper and more complex. The writing style was a off putting for me at first. It felt dry, like a poor translation, but like the desert after a rain, the text blooms and compels. This book is worth owning and rereading!

Dr. Robert Drew Simpson was our minister in New Jersey for 25 years and all his wit and warmth comes through in this terrific collection of Methodist antecdotes from the early years of Methodism in America. We find this a great addition to the confirmation curriculum since it deftly brings a human face to Methodist history.

4 out of 5 stars "The Wild and the Wesleyan".......2000-08-06

At last, here is a book that presents the quirky and all-too-human side of Methodist history. You'll meet a wide array of ministerial giants -- from Francis Asbury, the tireless itinerant bishop roundly acknowledged to be the father of American Methodism...to "Crazy" Dow, an evangelist with as many idiosyncracies as a "Northern Exposure" character. This is not dry historical reading by any stretch. A must-read for any student of Methodism or mainstream religion in general, this is a colorful window into one of the most influential religious organizations in the world.

It's hard to find a lesser man than Apropos: a con man, a knave, a scalawag...and those are his finer points. This time, Apropos winds up a stranger in a strange land called "Chinpan," populated by those who speak a different language and live by a code of honor, neither of which Apropos can comprehend. And yet it is here that he begins to examine his life and question whether he can aspire to become more than the hard-bitten cynic he's always been. He may yet be able to find a happy ending among a gentle people who are willing to accept him, faults and all, and he acquires a teacher who may even be able to set him on a road to true enlightenment.

But events conspire to pull Apropos in unexpected and dangerous directions, for his presence in Chinpan does not go unnoticed. What does the mysterious criminal organization known as the Forked Tong want with him? How do their plans tie in or conflict with the criminal Skang Kei family, and their enigmatic leader, Skang Kei Ho? What of the Mingol hordes? And what will be the fate of the Chin clan, including Double Chin, Cleft Chin, Kit Chin, and little Kit Chinette?

            Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Gah, what a lousy ending! .......2006-11-28

The first two books in the trilogy were great reads, but this one? I got the feeling that the author got tired of the whole series and wanted to get everything wrapped up what in whatever way he could. It shows.

4 out of 5 stars Darkly humorous fantasy.......2006-09-03

Generally, in fantasy (among other genres), the principal characters fit into one of three broad categories. There are, of course, the heroes and the villains, and somewhere between the two is the anti-hero. Which is Peter David's character, Sir Apropos of Nothing? At times, he can be any of the three, which makes him all the more interesting. Certainly, in the third Apropros book, Tong Lashing, we get to see him at both his best and worst.

The novel begins with the protagonist drifting at sea, the only survivor of a shipwreck. This wreck was the result of a dangerous Dungeons & Dragons-like game that Apropos is forced into playing with some rather obvious parodies of Fafhrd, the Grey Mouser and Thomas Covenant. Now, Apropos seems doomed, but he is the ultimate survivor who eventually winds up washed up on the shore of Chinpan, a land that is a blend of China and Japan.

Apropos is taken in by a farming village and begins to find peace with their simple existence. Eventually, however, the real world intrudes and he is drawn into a conflict between the local emperor and a vast criminal/rebel organization. Even this has mixed blessings as Apropos shifts his allegiances from one side to the other and reaps the benefits, at least temporarily. He may even find true love, albeit with a woman who is distinctly evil.

This is dark fantasy, not in the standard sense of a supernatural horror story but because of the pervasive grimness that seems to follow Apropos. He is unable to be happy; any sense of contentment is marred by his worries about the next bad thing. Do the gods truly conspire against him or are his problems caused by his own dark nature? There is no simple answer.

Mixed in with all this darkness is a lot of humor (especially in the first half of the book). Much of this relies on puns that range from the clever to the ridiculous, but there is also plenty of good pokes at the conventions of the fantasy genre. Sometimes, the sillier aspects are an inconvenient distraction. Overall, however, this is a good book - a high four stars - that should please most fantasy fans. It is the third book in a series, however, and is better read as part of the set than as a standalone book. As a whole, this is one of the better fantasy series in recent memory.

            1 out of 5 stars Don't bother........2006-06-25

Stick with the first two--this one is mean-spirited, and the plot twist is creaky.

3 out of 5 stars The End, For Now.......2006-05-04

"Tong Lashing" is the third book to feature the anti-hero Apropos of Nothing, along with roughly 115% more puns than is really necessary for anyone's sanity. (David is well-known for deploying both off-the-cuff standard low-brow eye-rolling puns and much more elaborate ones that take half a book to set up.) This current volume takes place in a Davidian emulation of ancient China/Japan (aptly named Chinpan), and Apropos runs afoul of the Forked Tong, the Skang Kei crime family, and the dreaded Anais Ninja clan (headed by the inscrutable Veruh Wang Ho).

David can truly break your heart, though, when he feels like it, which is once per book. And which happens here. The writing is effective, but the books have become very formulaic: pun, pun, snarky observations, Apropos runs away, everyone wants to kill Apropos, Apropos questions whether anti-heroism is an effective philosophy, he tries half-heartedly to do something good and is horrendously punished for it, a villain reveals an unexpected and poignant side, then the big heartbreak scene, and...END.

The page count could've been trimmed easily by dropping a good deal of the relentless internal monologuing over "Am I a good person or not, and is there such a thing as a good person, and why would anyone WANT to be a good person?" and so on.

The author definitely has skills and is not a little daring. I mean, in a single scene featuring three characters (immediately after a climax that some may find borders on troubling territory), he manages to allude to the Christian Holy Trinity, the atomic bombs Fat Man and Little Boy, AND the cult duo of Lone Wolf and Cub. But he needs to shake things up a bit. Every novel he writes, no matter the setting or cast, is largely the same novel. I want to see something different from him for once.

Future adventures of Apropos may not be forthcoming for awhile. David has noted that Pocket Books is not publishing new fantasy novels, but since they have the rights to the existing trilogy, he would have a hard time shopping a fourth book to another publisher. In the meantime, he intends to write some Apropos short stories, but whether those will ever see the light of day is unclear.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best...but not bad.......2006-04-11

I'm a big fan of science fiction/fantasy humor like Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams. I have read and bought the entire Sir Apropos of Nothing Series and although this was my least favorite, I didn't dislike it. I loved the wordplay--better than in either of the other books, but the book seemed a little burdened with social issues. Plus, it looks like Peter David is looking to end the series here because he resolved most of the conflicts that have been present since book one. Unfortunately, some of them ended rather abruptly--unsatisfying! However, there's hope because of a tiny bit on the last page that drove me crazy after I finished the book and realized what it was saying. Not sure if this helps...but basically if you liked the other books in the series, you should give it a try!

3 out of 5 stars The graveyard of the ships and the dimensional portals made no contribution to the plot .......2006-12-09

The Federation is locked in a brutal war against the Dominion and things are not going well. Deep Space Nine has been lost and the Dominion is building a giant artificial wormhole. If it is completed, the Dominion will be able to send enormous numbers of Jem Hadar soldiers and ships through it to join the battle against the Federation. If that were to happen, the Federation would certainly be defeated.
Captain Picard is on a ship with a motley crew of various species. The crew includes a Trill who was the genius behind the development of the artificial wormhole, a Bajoran who once deserted to the Maquis, a Starfleet officer who was once a Dominion slave, a captured Romulan with one arm, Geordi LaForge and a Vulcan. Their mission is to somehow infiltrate Dominion space and destroy the wormhole. To complicate matters, there is a traitor on board who is sabotaging the mission. Despite the odds, Picard manages to get the ship into Dominion space, reaching the wormhole. He also manages to identify and destroy the traitor just before they launch their mission of sabotage.
The action in this story is kept rather low-key until the end. Most of the plot revolves around Picard's attempts to simultaneously carry out the mission and expose the saboteur. This point is a little weak, as the first act of sabotage should have been a strong indication as to the nature of the threat. Data and the rest of the Enterprise crew play essential but bit parts in the story, the focus is on Picard and his command abilities. While the story did keep my attention, there were points where the pace of the story was too slow for my tastes. I started to grow weary of the same features repeated with slight modifications over and over again. I also didn't understand why the story about the graveyard of ships and the winking in and out of the various dimensions had to be included. It came across as filler.

3 out of 5 stars Good action story........2004-06-12

Like the first book in this miniseries, this book is a fine action story, with a lively plot that moves right along at a fast clip. Also like the first book, if you want anything OTHER than action, this is the wrong book to pick up. The one attempt at something more than fast-paced action -- a budding romance between Ro Laren and Sam Lavelle -- is handled remarkably clumsily. This sub-plot could have been very moving and powerful; instead, it was only rather distracting. It didn't really ring true for either character, and seemed completely out of place, merely something tacked onto the main plot for the purpose of deflecting accusations of a lack of character development.

This book is really a sequel to book one of the series; as near as I can tell, book two adds very little if anything to the storyline in books one and three. Essentially, books one and three are a linked pair, as are books two and four, but the two pairs actually have very little to do with one another and can be read independently of each other.

5 out of 5 stars If you love Picard, you'll love this book. Superb Finalé!.......2003-12-25

Book 4 continues on from book 2 (book 1 and 3 should be read together as a different series). I enjoyed seeing the many twists this book had to offer and how Picard coped with it all. The horrors of war were better flushed out as Riker's new conquest turns depressing, something I much enjoyed. Troi gets some time to do something, and since it's tied with Riker it was fun to read. Picard's ragtag team on the Orb of Peace was quite fun to read, especially when they encounter new people in the Badlands and take aboard an interesting one-armed 'guest'. That character was very refreshing, esp. due to his appreciation for Picard. It is sad to see the Enterprise tied at a starbase for most of the series, but it was quite necessary to accentuate the brilliance of Picard. A little romance b/w a few characters was actually quite well done, although somewhat unexpected from Ro's behalf methinks. I loved how Picard manipulates Grof to help him by strengthening his ego. The author really makes Picard shine, as it should be!
The cover of this book is very misleading, never does the Enterprise attack 2 Cardassian Galor-class ships. Its eventual turnout is very expected, but it still made me smile despite the predictability. Data's presence was very welcomed and it was good to see Geordi's response to him. Both series (1&3, 2&4) are essential turning points in the War. If either Sisko or Picard had failed, while the other succeeded, it would all be for nought, which makes this 4 part series somewhat intertwined. Personally I prefered books 1 and 3 to 2 and 4 since 2 and 4 were for the most part taken straight from the TV show whereas the TNG part was fresh and in accordance with the established characters. If you love Picard, then reading what he did to save the Quadrant in books 1 and 3 will be worthwhile.

            4 out of 5 stars ...In For a Pound.......2003-08-11

Let me clarify my rating for this novel. I felt the conclusion of this tale was very good, but the editing was terrible. A variety of times during the Riker subplot, the female repair officer seemed to change ranks a few times, between Commander (pg30) and Captain (pg22). Once I realized the simple error, overlooking it because easy. But I digress...

The main tale of adventure weaved by Vornholt caught my attention and kept me pushing to finish the story. The sub-plots felt contrived. Data charging to the rescue and the Enterprise being in the right spot at the right time, felt wrong. The story was great but the execution just was not there.

I loved the tale and story. Would I read more from John Vornholt? I am not sure. As a Star Trek fan, I can forgive the minor problems in this novel. I even understand the pressure deadlines can cause on good stories. No one is perfect, so I am sure I will dive into more novels.

            Ro Laren character comments:

S.D. Perry re-introduced Ro into the Deep Space Nine novel re-launch. The development of her in this story did not interfere with the character in Avatar. There is a minor mention in Avatar about Picard protecting Ro from Starfleet, which no seems kind of awkard but doesn't interfere.

4 out of 5 stars Good conclusion to book 1........2000-06-12

This book concluded book 1. very nicely, I must say. As did book 1., this book moved smoothly. It also a couple plot twists that may not be expected.

            Book Description

In 1812, Sir John Malcom, a Lieutenant General in the British Army wrote "A Sketch of the Sikhs," commonly believed to be the first account of the Sikhs written by a non-Sikh. In truth, soldiers, travelers, diplomats, missionaries, and scholars had provided accounts for many years before that. Drawing on this difficult-to-find material, the editors of this volume have compiled a unique source that offers a fascinating insight into the early developments in Sikh history. From the first ever written accounts of the Sikhs by Persian chroniclers of the Moghul Emperor to the travel diary of an Englishwoman, this volume contains material invaluable to those studying the evolution of the Sikh religion.

5 out of 5 stars Step into the Past.......2006-06-02

I bought this book expecting to read articles with a bigoted, mis-informed view of the Sikh culture and people from an anti-Sikh western viewpoint, or worse, pure ignorance. I was pleasantly surprised by the detailed and fascinating detail on the circumstances of Sikh people and life during the periods covered. I appreciate that there are gaps in coverage, but that adds to the authencity of the accounts and helps you formulate a view in your mind how the Sikh's could've changed from a small band of warriors under Bhanda Singh to the organised armies under Ranjit Singh. What I liked were the commentaries by the narrators who put the writer's circumstances into context before putting the writer's actual account before the reader. This helps the reader appreciate the limitations of the writer's perspective, and appreciate the actual gems of insight where they are to be found. The book also gives a glimpse into the past when it wasn't necessary to be 'man with turban' to be sikh, but there were other ways to be spiritually sikh without donning the appearance of a Khalsa sikh.

Overall, a gr8 read. Now onto Patwant Singh's book...

5 out of 5 stars A must for Sikh History researchers.......2005-11-02

This book has got all that you need to avoid reinventing the wheel. A must for Sikh history researchers.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent piece of historical research.......2005-02-24

Well done to the authors and all who supported them in this long overdue project.

Amandeep and Paramjeet have attempted to write this book in an unbiased fashion, and I must say, have succeeded. This is a rare acheivement for authors of history and historians, as the biased historical accounts of the early Europeans in India show.

The accounts (some apparently eye witness) of Banda Bahadur are particulary informative as to the culture, opinions, attitudes and politics of the rulers and the Sikhs in the early eighteenth century.

It's a shame that there is still a gap in mid eighteenth century Sikh history, although there are accounts of this, they are still very limited in content and historians rely heavily on the hearsay of the time.

Maybe a project on the Sikh Misls could be a possibilty, using all known sources!! There is a lot of misinformation about this period and the Sardaars. A comprehensive and historical records based study is much needed!

There is some very interesting information as to the practices of Sikhs which I never knew of before e.g. stirring amrit with a boars tooth, which is very believable if looked at in the context of the problems faced by the Sikhs of the time.

Unsuprisingly, there are comprehensive reports of Ranjit Singhs darbaar.

In all, this is an eye opening, inspiring and educational book.
