4 out of 5 stars Nite-wing or Nightwing?.......2005-08-04

Nightwing, with much hard work, has finally made Bludhaven his own; Nightwing is now to Bludhaven what Batman is to Gotham. Dick Grayson is the protector of the few innocents that still grace the streets of Bludhaven, an urban cesspool that makes Gotham look like a good site for a Girl Scout meeting.

Superman makes an appearance early in the book, teaming up with Nightwing to pay Roland Desmond a visit. The relationship between Nightwing and Superman is very different from that of Batman and Superman. As one reviewer has already aptly pointed out, both Batman and Robin teamed up with Superman quite often. Robin, Dick Grayson, developed a stronger trust of Superman and invites his help. Batman views Superman as a hindrance.

One of my favorite characters is the blond-headed "Nitewing" who busts up criminals in true vigilante fashion. He is utterly obsessed and I eagerly await new books that reveal the reason he battles crime so fiercely. How will Chief Redhorn utilize the aid of this Nite-wing? And what will happen when the two Nightwings finally confront one another?

Another good series of plot twists, and a crime boss who refuses to fade away, the Nightwing series shows great promise. I've liked both books I've ordered so far.

5 out of 5 stars Nightwing At His Best!.......2004-06-08

Chuck Dixon's run on the monthly "Nightwing" books with artists Scott McDaniel and Karl Story are among the best runs by a creative team ever. The trio created a likable lead character in the former Boy-Wonder, Dick Grayson, and placed him in a town-without-pity, Bludhaven. With this volume (the fourth in the Nightwing series by the trio), Nightwing truly steps out of the shadow of his mentor, Batman, and becomes his own man. This is the volume that has everything and more to satisfy even the most demanding comic fan. Examples?

1] A team-up with Superman that shows how deep the bond is that Dick shares with Supes. Remember that Dick was part of the "World's Finest" team in the Silver Age? (People always remember that team as a Batman-Superman team only!) Furthermore, in the Silver Age, Superman takes on the name "Nightwing" sometimes when he visits the Bottled City of Kandor. In this volume (set in post-Crisis continuity), we have Superman telling Nightwing the exploits of a "Kryptonian" hero called "Nightwing"! Also, see Superman take on the "kingpin" of Bludhaven, the Blockbuster.

2] Nightwing in the No Man's Land! See how Dick fights to bring order to Blackgate Prison. There's more action here than in all five "Batman: No Man's Land" tradepaperbacks combined! See how Chuck Dixon silence all the cynics and critics calling this book "Batman Jr." or "Batman Lite" once and for all with this pulse-pounding tale. Dick Grayson is indeed his own man now, no less than his mentor.

3] The kiss that seals a great love. In the Silver Age stories, we see Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) flirting many times with Robin, without it coming to any finality. Then by the 1970s-90s, Nightwing was primarily featured only in Marv Wolfman's "New Teen Titans" books (there, he was paired with the alien Starfire). In this volume, Chuck Dixon revives the Barbara-Dick romance with them finally expressing their love for each other. All in the midst of a life-and-death team-up against the mad, fanatical ex-GCPD cops.

4] This volume also sets up the brilliant storyline that is further expanded upon in future volumes - Dick Grayson as a police officer!

Lastly, I'd like to say that Scott McDaniel used to be my most hated artist at one time. Now, I can't get enough of the crazy perspectives and unbelievably "messy" details in his art. If you want comic-artwork that screams "action" and drives your adrenaline level all the way up, there's nothing comparable to the McDaniel-Story team.

4 out of 5 stars Continuing to please.......2001-03-02

For some reason, my last review didn't show up, so apologies for the shorter on.

Definitely a must-read for any Nightwing fans.

Nightwing continues to come into his own as a hero, even as he's pulled by his ties to Batman. The strongest segment of this compilation is definitely the retaking of Blackgate, which includes the seemingly obligatory "Dick Grayson, this is your life" flashback series (this one, however, is thankfully light on the self-doubt that plagues our hero). Seeing Oracle in acition is worth the price of admission all on its own. The only caveat I'd add is that if you're not familiar with the events in Gotham (the quake, No Man's Land) and the players involved, it might get a bit confusing.

Less strong are the Double Dare and police academy storylines. DOuble Dare, while interesting enough, seemed a bit too cotton-candy in the midst of the other storylines, and while the idea of Dick going to the academy is interesting, it doesn't get nearly enough page time to be more than almost an afterthought.

The continuing intrigue of of the Bludhaven PD is shaping up nicely, and Blockbuster's new storyline almost makes you feel sorry for the big guy.

Overall, definitely worth acquiring.

4 out of 5 stars Continues to please.......2001-02-28

I'm obsessed with Nightwing. Keep that in mind as you read this.

The adventures of the man who was Robin and is now Nightwing continue to provide solid entertainment. The ongoing storyline of Blockbuster takes an interesting turn here, one that almost has you feeling sorry for the man (well, maybe for his mother). Dick's decision to join the police force gets it's follow through, although not a lot of page time as of yet. The usual players their appearances: Babs (interesting stuff there), Huntress(ditto), Clancy, Tad (who seems to have learned little in the way of caution from his shooting), and, of course, the Bat.

Batman's appearance leads to what is certainly the best storyline in the compilattion: the retaking of Blackgate. It includes the seemingly required trip down memory lane, although this time with thankfully little of the self-doubt that plagues earlier storylines.

Meanwhile, in Bludhaven, things are brewing nicely towards some larger plot.

If anything cost this issue a star, it was the Double Dare segment. Don't get me wrong: I liked the ladies just fine. But sandwiched between a visit from Superman and the retaking of Blackgate, their hijinks seemed a little fluffy to me.

Definitely a must-own for Nightwing fans!

Book Description

Despite an abundance of violence occurring in political contexts, no liberal political theorist since Thomas Hobbes has talked directly and coherently about death. John E. Seery does. He contends that liberalism desperately needs a theoretical framework in which to discuss pressing matters of human mortality. Among the contemporary political issues that cry out for theoretical articulation, Seery suggests, are abortion politics, ethnic cleansing, suicide assistance, national reparations, environmental degradation, and capital punishment.

Shades of Justice is about Gwen Parrish, an attorney trying to earn a coveted judgeship. She soon finds how difficult this is when she faces various political and personal challenges. Unfortunately, this story moves so slow that I've had this book for 4 years and refuse to pick it up again. It's like Gwen kept whining about this judgeship that she thought she deserved for some reason. I didn't care about her or any of the other characters. Linda McKeever Bullard's writing style makes this an extremely painful read. It's no wonder that this was the only novel from this author.

      2 out of 5 stars Very Slow.......2004-02-03

It took me from August 2003 until February 2004 to finish this book. I read 7 books between Shades of Justice. It started off good until she remarried and the author kept using the N word. The battles with her daughther was crazy and unreal. The story line kept changing. It started getting good at the end, but then that was a disappointment. It was not clear who killed CC.

1 out of 5 stars Worst book ever written.......2003-11-26

This book was facinating in the same way that a three car accident on the highway is facinating. This is quite possilby the worst book I've ever read. The first chapter was ok but beyond that, it was a train wreck. I kept thinking to myself, this has to get better, it just had to, but to my chagrin it never did. The only good thing about this book is I didn't have to pay full price for it. It's so bad, I wouldn't even recommend borrowing it

After I read this book, all I thought was, there's 2 days of my life that I will never get back

I read this book a couple of years ago and I am amazed at all of the positive reviews it has received. I am not even sure this is an African American author, and if so she is out of touch with reality. This seems to be a soap opera type novel written from a white perspective with black characters as the focal points in the story. The only reason I gave it one star was because I wasn't able to give no stars. By the way, a friend of mines left a negative review and I noticed it was convientely deleted from this site, she hated it as well.

4 out of 5 stars I was prepared to be bored but the book wasn't boring.......2004-02-04

With our 10 inches of new snow and having run out of the library books I checked out I hit the pile of maybe books. Maybe I'll read this now because I don't think I will like it.

Suprisingly the book kept my interest. The forensic pyschologist and the rest of the characters are realistic leaving only slight spaces of "Huh?" and they all behave true to the character type. Reading carefully you will pick up immediately who might very well have killed poor Mark but the author tends to sway you back and forth a bit leaving you going "Yeah she did, nah she couldn't have" very much like you are a juror. The ending wasn't a suprise because the clues add up and something is fishy in Denmark early on. The only fault I find is that the main characters do not pick up rapidly on that but the stress is laid consistantly that they are too close to the situation to see what is happening. There were some very satisfying parts where the obnoxious Moralistic Extreme Right Wing Bigots get knocked down and a few of the other characters meet a similar fate because they deserved it. In fact the only fault I can find is that each gets exactly what they deserve.

Not a satifying book for obnoxious Moralistic Extreme Right Wing Bigots or incompetents in general because they see themselves but for those of us who want a sense of justice, it is pretty darn good even if my Noir attitude says Not everyone gets what they deserve and I have a hard time believing it.

1 out of 5 stars Shades of injustice.......2003-03-21

If you're looking for an intruiging story full of great writing, look else where. This book started off slow and spiraled downward. I have never read anything as horrid and degrating as this in my life.
I can't believe these were supposed to be professional people. The characters had no decency whatsoever.
If you happen to make it to the end of the book you'll
find that the ending is unbelievable; like it was pulled from the depths of stupidity instead of a logical thinking adult.
I started the book thinking i'd find a good read about black women who were upstanding and role models.
The only role models these people where for future idots of society.

1 out of 5 stars Hideous use of paper.......2001-10-30

I live in the same small community as the author, so I was looking forward to reading Shades of Justice. Unfortunately I came away from the experience with chills, though not the ones that I assume the author had hoped for from his readers. Inane dialogue, see through plot, ...character development are the more subtle descriptions of this book. It is hard for me to believe that a book such as this -- inept in every way imaginable -- can actually get published.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than Great.......2001-06-29

In 1997 in Seattle, highly regarded painter Laura Arcand is rushed unconscious to Harborview Hospital after trying to commit suicide. While the staff feverishly worked to save her life, Laura awakens for a moment screaming that she killed the two of them.

Not long afterward in nearby Kitsap County, the corpse of Laura's husband is found near her mother's home. Someone shot Laura's husband Mark Talbott. Prosecuting Attorney Judith Watkins firmly believes the heathen Laura killed her husband. Besides the ER confession, other evidence points towards Laura as a murderer.

Her mother's lover, attorney Ed Hauser, plans to defend Laura, whom he loves like a daughter. He brings in family friend, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Hatton to help and assigns much of the research to his top young lawyer Mary Slattery. With a religious fanatic representing the county going after Laura with an inquisition like vengeance, the defense team has its work cut out for them in what seems like an impossible case to defend.

SHADES OF JUSTICE is a powerful legal-medical thriller that never slows down even when introducing the key players. For instance Will is met by the reader while testifying in Texas and Mary at the scene of the crime. This technique allows the audience to understand the defense team better while moving forward a strong story line. Fans of the combined sub-genre will want more works by Fredrick Huebner after completing this fabulous tale with a few surprising twists and turns even when the case is a sure shot win for the prosecution.

        Book Description

A year ago, Chris Csejthe (pronounced "Say-thee") was completely human-then a blood transfusion with the Lord of the Undead changed everything. Now he is a hunted man, sought by human and vampire alike for the secrets he knows and the powers that his mutated blood may bestow. So far he's dodged undead assassins, werewolves, a 6,000-year-old Egyptian necromancer, and Vlad Dracula himself. But now he's really got problems. The dead are turning up on his doorstep after dark to ask for justice and the police want to know where all those corpses are coming from. Undead terrorists are testing a doomsday virus on his new hometown and he's caught in the crossfire between a white supremacist militia and the resurrected Civil War dead. His werewolf lover, jealous of his dead wife's ghost, has left him. And the centuries-old and still very beautiful (and very deadly) Countess Bathory is determined to have his uniquely transformed blood for her own dark purposes. Now, more than ever, life sucks!

        4 out of 5 stars a long romp.......2007-06-25

In this rather longish second episode of Chris Chejthe's adventures we are presented with nearly every possible fantastical creature: even an archangel and a rusalka make a short appearance.

Add to this many debates about the nature of life, of good, of evil, of ethics, of war, of religion, etc.: Mr Simmons has done his research and invests his readers with heaps of knowledge ranging from pop culture to philosophy through voodoo and American literature.
This should not bode well but Chris manages to remain a very interesting and likeable character, a little wordy at times, with a little proneness to being judgemental but alive and ***-kicking.

Our author plunges him in a perilous adventure and is certainly unafraid of using every conceivable plot twist.
His writing is in the main neat and only from time to time does the reader need to check energetically occasional deluges of words that threaten to overwhelm him/her.

Our author does not comply with the unwritten rules of this genre: there are violence and gore but they are not the book's main course; sex (straight sex - no homosexuality here) is mentioned more in passing than indulged upon unless it is to open a moral debate.

A pleasing if excentric -so to speak- read.

2 out of 5 stars A Train Wreck of a Novel, With An Addictive Plot........2007-03-13

Okay, I have to admit that it's somewhat fun. The author throws in a pop culture reference almost every other page.

        However...

Most of the references are rather dated. Buckaroo Banzai, I Dream of Genie, Martian Manhunter from Marvel Comics, Weebles Wobble, Northern Exposure, The Sixth Sense, Ghost Busters...at one point he looks at the students he's teaching at a University and says "Bueller?" The author must be my age.

There are points in the book that are a little disjointed. For example, our hero, Chris Csejthe, just had a staggering battle with a vampire, and lost, [the battle is very well written]. Then, as he staggers home, he reflects for many pages on his Slavic roots and blood connections with the Countess Bathory from the 1600's. This figures later in the book, but at first it seemed soooo out in left field. ...like a visit with the History Channel.
He goes on about the Countess a number of other times, for multiple pages at a time. I would have been much more satisfied to know that she was one very mixed up Hungarian Royal with freakishly sick sanguine practices. Or better still, have Chris actually stop somewhere and review his research. Sure, it would be cliché, but it would be far better then having these historic interludes pop up while he's driving or walking. It just didn't work for me.

Then there is a chapter where he saves a baby in a hospital maternity ward by explaining to the medical staff what Congenital Erythropoietic Porphyria is [sunlight sensitivity] for a number of pages. What? That came from too far out of left field. So far I haven't found a plot thread where that was important.

It's a quirky novel. I'll give it that much. I didn't catch that it was a 'book 2' of 3 for a few chapters.

I don't intend to finish the book.

5 out of 5 stars Really fun book - can't wait for the next!.......2006-12-31

Poor Chris - it wasn't bad enough that his wife and daughter died when he saved the life of Dracula; he was also infected with half of the recombinant virus that causes vampirism. Not quite a vampire, he is also not quite human anymore. He has to drink blood to maintain his health and strength, and sunlight gives him nasty boils unless he has on a LOT of high SPF sunscreen. In this book his werewolf girlfriend Lupe has left him because he is being haunted by the ghost of his deceased wife; he has opened up a blood bank (only partially so he will have access to some of the blood himself) and has started a PI business, just for something to do. Unfortunately, he becomes embroiled in a bitter feud with Countess Bathory, for whom it isn't enough that Dracula stepped down and left the New York desmesne to her, but that he must also die. To make matters worse, the arrival of a lovely vampire that he accidentally sired coincides with one of his students following him around, thinking he is a Dark Master from whom she can learn. As if that isn't enough - the dead are rising and coming to visit him, demanding he do something to bring them justice. And that's not all . . .

This is a multi-layered book, and one I enjoyed immensely. It is also the first of the Halflife Chronicles I read, as at the time I purchased it "One Foot in the Grave" was unavailable. I have since read that one as well, and you can skip on over there to read my review as well.

I am anxiously awaiting the release of "Habeus Corpses" in paperback so I can get my hands on that one - it promised to be terrific!

        4 out of 5 stars Nice Surprise.......2006-11-19

This guy came out of no where. I had never heard of Mark Simmons before. Then i was browsing in the SciFi section (i think, or maybe it was the fantasy section) and i came across this title. I admit, i am a sucker for a good title, although the cover of this book was a bit off putting for me. I read the offered reviews in the front of the book, then i sat down and read the first chapter. Sounded interesting, so i bought it. When i came home and did an amazon search on this guy, i realized i had seen his first book before, the one with the female werewolf on it and so disliked the cover that i dismissed it. Thus proving that no, you cannot judge a book by its cover. This was a very entertaining read. The dialogue is clever, the plot is interesting, the characters were unique (which is hard to achieve in the vampire genre especially for someone who reads so much of it). Unforunately i read it out of sequence so now i've got to go back and read the first one. I do recommend this series based on part two. And i'm hoping to prove another old saying true, the one that goes, part one is always better than part two.

mmmk, it wasn't as funny as the first novel, but it has its moments. the puns aren't as prevalent but hey, Chris just isn't as flippant and naieve(sp?) as he used to be. get the book, trust me!

        Book Description

When a well-known Wesley banker is killed on her doorstep, Claire Maxwell’s day goes downhill fast—especially when she’s considered a prime suspect. Although it’s unlikely that Claire’s brother, Chief Jack Maxwell, really believes she had anything to do with it, she doesn’t like any possible connection between her and a dead man. Besides, being perpetually dateless, everyone in Wesley already knows that lately most of her dates have been more dead than alive.

In an effort to clear her name, Claire is soon on the hunt for the real killer. She quickly finds all kinds of other possible suspects – all, in her humble opinion, with way better reasons than she has to kill Mr. Berger. The suspects are plenty and Claire begins to hear things about the victim that she wishes she had never heard. In the spirit of Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, this humorous murder mystery is full of twists and turns that will keep the reader guessing the killer’s identity until the very last page.

3 out of 5 stars Good first effort.......2000-12-04

All Claire wanted to do was putter in her garden and feed hot dogs to her German shepherd. The dead man who rang her doorbell apparently spoiled all plans of leisure.

So begins the debut of a new series by Lynn Wingert starring amateur sleuth Claire Maxwell, a freelance medical writer who appears to be more interested in sticking her nose in other people's business than in the books she researches for her articles. Of course, when a wealthy local banker expires at her front door just as the chime fades, the mystery of his death does become Claire's business. A strange one, too, since Claire never knew the man when he was alive.

Despite the objections of the local fuzz, who is also Claire's brother (and who really listens to the police and/or family in these kinds of stories, anyway?), Claire grills the dead man's family and aquaintances, finding legitmate motives for everybody but unable to single out anybody as the killer. Just when Claire starts to reconsider to keep her freelancing expertise to medical journals, however, a few surprise twists toward the end of the story lead Claire (and the readers) to a plausible, unusual conclusion.

Dead on My Feet is a good first effort for Wingert, who is scheduled (according to her bio) to release two more installments featuring Claire Maxwell. Claire likes to joke with her readers, maintains an awful diet, and appears almost childlike in her curiosity. Think Nancy Drew crossed with Rhoda Morgenstern. It is my hope, though, that Dead's successors provide more story than this first outing -- at only 113 pages, Dead on My Feet may come off to some as too brief, making perhaps a better short story.

5 out of 5 stars TWO THUMBS UP!.......1999-05-01

Wingert really captures the reader's attention with her sharp wit, plot twists, and bits of humor throughout the book. Not only did I enjoy reading it, but I passed it on to my sister as well! The characters are smartly written and the storyline surprised me with every page! If you want a good book to keep you in suspense and make you laugh at the same time, I recommend "Dead on My Feet" by Ms. Wingert. She's going to be on her way up with this series of mystery novels; I guarantee it.

"Dead On My Feet" is the best book I have read in years. Authoress Lynn Wingert does a superb job of capturing the readers attention and holding it throughout the entire book. It is plum-full of mystery, whodoneit, and wit. Wingert is such a promising authoress, I plan on starting my own Wingert/Clair Maxwell library of my own. This book is definately a MUST READ for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars The 21st Chronicle of Gor & still a wonderful read! :).......2000-04-23

Why did John Normans books ever go out of print? War on Gor is a rousing and fearful affair---and when the armada of Cos landed and began its sweeping arch against the mighty city of Ar, Tarl Cabot was swept up in their drive. Outcast from Port Kar, rejected by the Priest Kings, Tarl fought now for his own redemption. With comrades at his side, barbarian warriors and daring women, free and slave, his plans went forward---until the mercenaries of Dietrich of Tarnburg disrupted the struggle as a mysterious third force. MERCENARIES OF GOR brings into action all the magic and conflict of that counter-Earth, as Tarl became the center of intrigue and treachery in the city of his greatest enemies. Definetely worth trying to get your hands on. :)

                  Book Description

For Vigen Guroian, contemporary culture is distinguished by its relentless assault on the moral imagination. In the stories it tells us, in the way it has degraded courtship and sexualized our institutions of higher education, in the ever-more-radical doctrines of human rights it propounds, and in the way it threatens to remake human nature via biotechnology, contemporary culture conspires to deprive men and women of the kind of imagination that Edmund Burke claimed allowed us to raise our perception of our own human dignity, or to "cover the defects of our own naked shivering nature." In Rallying the Really Human Things, Guroian combines a theologian's keen sensitivity to the things of the spirit with his immersion in the works of Burke, Russell Kirk, G. K. Chesterton, Flannery O'Connor, St. John Chrysostom, and other exemplars of the religious humanist tradition to diagnose our cultural crisis. But he also points the way towards a culture more solicitous of the "really human things," the Chesterton phrase from which he takes his title. Guroian's wide-ranging analysis of these times provides a fresh and inimitable perspective on the practices and mores of contemporary life.
