Book Description
"I'm a P.K., preacher's kid (or if I want to get fancy, a T.O., a theologian's offspring). I grew up afraid of my own allowance . . ."
So when over $20 million falls into her lap shortly after she moves to Minneapolis, Cassia Carr views her Midas touch as a cross, not a blessing -- above all, the unexpected difficulty of giving it away!
It's hard enough to gauge romantic feelings without the complication of a humongous windfall. Her globe-trotting neighbor, Adam Cavanaugh, seems interested -- but in Cassia or her fortune? And when Adam abruptly disappears, should Cassia forget him and reconsider the suitors she's dismissed as "Mr. Slightly Wrong" -- or follow her heart to an unknown, life-changing destination?

soooooo funny but good!!!.......2007-08-13
I loved Million Dollar Dilemma! I read alot of Christian fiction but Million Dollar Dilemma is one of my favorites! Its funny, has an interesting plot, and Cassia is a loveable character. Its also thought-provoking and challenging. I like Judy Baer's use of scripture throughout the book. Its a light read.
This book's worth a million!.......2007-07-24
Million Dollar Dilemma was not the typical chick-lit book, well, it was, but there was something different about it. It made me actually think about my own life. I think of most chick-lit books as just an easy read-something to get my mind off my daily routine and life. This book made me actually think, "WHAT WOULD I DO IF I WON 20 MILLION DOLLARS?"
My initial reaction was, well I would give 25% to the church (I mean, look how much I have...I don't need it ALL...), put 50% in savings, and then buy a new car, a nice outfit, take a trip, etc. with the rest.
But by the end of the book I understood it all. MONEY DOES NOT BUY HAPPINESS.
This book is a wonderful book in making you realize that very important proverb.
The ONLY thing I didn't really like about this book is that I was a little concerned with Baer's idea of the main character falling in love with a man who was not firm in his Christian walk, whereas she was. It all turned out okay, and the man WAS a Christian, he was just not EQUALLY yoked with her, because she was so very strong in her faith and he was not. Minor detail though, and he came back to the Lord, strong as ever in the end.
Great book though!
Money (That's NOT what i want).......2007-04-05
Cassia has always lived a life of frugality. She's learned to live cheaply and not worldly. In fact, money is the last thing on her mind. So it's a shock for her when she finds out that what she thought was a $5 donation for an office present is really her share in a multimillion dollar jackpot lottery ticket. Now she's being bombarded by everyone, those who want her money, to give her advice, even those she barely knows. Plus now she has 2 guys are who are vying for her attention. Cassia wants nothing to do with the money, but it's everywhere she goes. Money's not just the root of all evil, it also makes a normal life practically impossible!
Ok, who hasn't dreamed about winning the lottery? Everyone, no matter what they believe in, has had thoughts about what they would do if they were given a million dollars. How they spend the money may differ, but I'm sure that even the most practical person has some plans for its use. And that is why I found Cassia to be a very unreal character. Frankly she annoyed me quite a bit. I don't mind that she didn't want the money. I just found it annoying the way she kept complaining that she didn't want anything to do with the money, and then she's worried about having to pay rent. She brought up wanting to go back to college but not being able to because she didn't have money. Ok, now she has money but she won't do it because she doesn't want to touch the money. I don't understand why Cassia couldn't save just a little for her future and then give the rest away. She kept acting like it was tainted and evil. I also didn't really like that she kept throwing around Bible verses in normal conversation. If she was my coworker, I would have thought she was either showing off. There's nothing wrong with studying Scripture, but when it's quoted out of context, it's weird. I didn't really feel her relationship with Adam had much chemistry. I liked him, he was a good guy, I just didn't feel that they clicked. I did like Cassia's final decision about what to do with her winnings.
I personally enjoyed The Whitney Chronicles a lot more than this book. Maybe it's because I could relate to the main character in that book as opposed to this one. This book was a light read, but I would recommended TWC or Norah's Ark to a first time Judy Baer reader.
What would you do if you won the lottery?.......2007-02-16
A completely entertaining and thought-provoking novel! The characters are likeable. The main plot involves our main character splitting lottery winnings with her office mates. As a Christian, she is conflicted over this because she wouldn't have played the lottery on her own. She only contributed to the lottery ticket because she thought she was chipping in for a gift for a co-worker.
Judy Baer is a very creative and colorful writer. Million Dollar Dilemma was a fast-moving, fun read. But it did get me thinking about how I would behave in the same situation. How do you really know if someone likes you for you or for your net worth?
Don't even bother!.......2006-12-14
I LOVE Christian Chic Lit, & I even adored the prequel to this book, "The Whitney Chronicles", but Million Dollar Dilemma, was just ridiculous. I felt the plot was very contrived, and there was not a lot of character development. The pacing seemed off, and the storyline was just too bizarre. Now, sometimes it's fun to indulge in fantasy-reading, but as a reader, I sure couldn't "just go along" with it..... I love books that enrich my devotional life, but the scripture spouting seemed very forced, like the author said, "Well, think I'll throw a scripture reference on this page."
I really did not connect at all to this character, Cassia. She was very flat, unseemingly naive, weak & had no personality.
In fairness to Ms. Baer -I KNOW she is a good author, as mentioned above with her "Whitney Chronicles". I have heard from friends that other novels that she has written are equally as good. This was just not up to par.
I recommend reading the Yada Yada Prayer Group Series.
Book Description
An amazing novel of the suburban condition, with wives, adultery, babysitters and swapping represented in their entirety. For those expecting something from the title, rest assured that Mr. Stevens does not disappoint.

Book Description
For five centuries of Crusades, European armies of believers, fanatics, and mercenaries warred with the followers of the Prophet for control of Asia Minor and Palestine. From Jerusalem to Vienna, the frontier between West and East saw battle and bloodshed, treachery and butchery on a scale hitherto unknown and unimagined. The pageantry of medieval knighthood, the exoticism of the Orient, the ferocity of the invaders from the steppes, the mysteries of the seraglio, the rise and fall of great dynasties—these provided a real historical backdrop for some of Robert E. Howard’s greatest fiction.
This volume contains the complete Oriental stories by the creator of Conan the Barbarian and Solomon Kane. Some were published in Farnsworth Wright’s Oriental Stories between 1930 and 1934; others were left unpublished and are printed here in authoritative texts based on the author’s surviving typescripts; and still others, left unfinished at his death, are presented as suggestive evidence of the work he had yet to do. As this collection attests, no one else writes action stories with Howard’s fast-paced intensity or brooding moral outlook. Here, the fates of empires rest on the swords of exiles, vagabonds, and renegades; whether civilization will be annihilated by religious zealots or by bloodthirsty barbarians, who is to say?
Customer Reviews:
I need the list of stories for this book.......2007-09-27
Harold Lamb wrote historical fiction and was one of Howard's favorite writers. This most likely inspired Howard to write some historical fiction of his own. If you like REH, check out Harold Lamb. The two of them are probably my favorite writers. But I like REH for his violent sword and sorcery, whereas my favorite stuff from Lamb are his historical works such as Hannibal and Genghis Khan (2 books that are must-reads by anybody interested in these two generals). Harold Lamb's famous Cossack stories are now being re-released. I have not yet read them but am looking forward to them, so check them out as well.
Also, if anybody has Lord of Samarcand and Others, please provide a list of the stories within this book (I think I have them all, but I want to be sure). I would be very thankful.
Adventures in the Middle East.......2007-09-02
I've been collecting the works of REH for a few years now, and have found this book to be an excellent collection. The stories in here are unique, containing none one of REH's 'big' heroes (Conan, Solomon Kane, Kull). Rather is about the later Crusades. Think if REH had written Kingdom of Heaven and you'll have a good idea as to what these stories are like. This isn't quite Sword and Sorcery... there are none of the monsters or magic found in many of REH's writings, but it is still worth reading for any true REH fan.
A great storyteller.......2007-07-01
Robert E. Howard is one of the best storytellers America has produced. The tragedy is that he died so young. This particular collection is excellent. The reader feels like (s)he is there. It's also amazing how prescient it is; the clash between the West and Islam is still with us.
Some of Howard's grimmest, best stories.......2006-09-15
These are some of Robert E. Howard's grimmest, best stories although they are far less well known than his (excellent) Conan and Solomon Kane stories. I particularly like the title story - a fictionalization of that grim and dynamic conqueror Timur (Tamerlane) who also inspired the work of artists like George F. Handel (who wrote an opera about him) and Christopher Marlowe (Tamburlaine the Great). Howard's tales are filled with hopeless, desperate heroism and dark poetry. He may have kille himself when he was only thirty but the guy was a writing fiend who left behind an impressive body of work which has stood the test of time and transcends its pulp origins.
fine stories by an underrated writer.......2005-06-24
In this collection are some of the best historical stories written by the literary giant Robert E. Howard. My personal favorite among them is Lord of Samarcand, the title story, though all are well done. What other writers would have droned on and on about ad nauseum Howard completes quickly, compellingly, and concisely. The stories are never funny, and often have grim endings indeed. This doesn't interfere with our enjoyment, though, for Howard was both an accomplished writer and a first-rate story teller. From Red Blades of Black Cathay to Shadow of the Vulture to Sowers of the Thunder and all the rest, Howard is in top form here. The excitement never wavers, and the crispness of the writing never fails. Combined with some fine editing and a generous selection of other stories in the same vein Howard sadly never finished, these stories are a must for any fan of good writing and good storytelling (especially fans of the immortal Robert E. Howard).

Book Description
If you read or write science fiction, here is the best introduction to the secrets, the craft, and the art of science fiction. Included are thirteen classic works of modern sf; wondrous stories by Alfred Bester, Philip K. Dick, Jack Vance, Frederick Pohl, and many others. If you love science fiction, read how a young fan grew up to become one of the most honored masters in the history of the field, as told in his own words.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Collection.......2004-06-04
This is a superb collection of some of the finest short works of science fiction.
Some of my favorite stories are included here:
"Fondly Fahrenheit," Bester, one of science fiction's most beautiful examples of rhythm and poetic styling.
"Hothouse," Aldiss, an example of a future Earth that will fill you with awe.
"Day Million," Pohl, the classic boy-meets-girl story of the distant future.
The others are good as well, but the above tales are worth the price of the book alone. Add in Silverberg's commentary, and you've got a treasure-trove.
Lessons from a Master.......2003-04-18
As the blurb on the book says, there really is something for any science fiction fan in here. You may choose to skip the first part where Silverberg talks about his entry into the wrold of SF writing, though, as a writer myself, I enjoyed it a great deal. It's a warm reminiscence not onlyof a young writer finding his voice but of those halcyon days of the so-called Golden and Silver Ages of science fiction.
The stories themselves are a terrific collection and include some true masterpieces of short story writing, some of which are rarely anthologised. Just go to the sample pages above to check out the contents list. I defy any SF fan not to enjoy most of these stories.
Then there are the essays on the stories, where Silverberg deconstructs and analyses the stories (without, I should add, in any way detracting from them). This isn't a case of the illusion being spoiled when you look at how it's done. I came away from them only more admiring of the skills and imaginations of the writers.
As to those who accuse this of being an ego exercise by Silverberg I can only say they obviously miss the point. There's a clear love of the craft and art of science fiction at work here. Silverberg tells us plainly that he chose these stories not because they are the all-time greats of the genre necessarily (though some actually are - and for a fuller list of such stories see Silverberg's anthology The Science Fiction Hall of Fame vol.1. The greatest SF short stories as chosen by the SF Writers Association).
These are the stories that a fledgling writer was moved by, astounded by, impressed and dazzled by. We all have our own lists of such stories and they often include ones that wouldn't be on anyone else's list. Doesn't make them bad choices, just personal ones. And frankly, if someone as talented as Robert Silverberg, an author and editor who's proven his talent time and again in this field, by any standard, hasn't earned the right after forty years of writing to do a collection like this, then I don't know who has.
There are any number of authors who have projected their own egos into their works. Harlan Ellison does it all the time and is wonderfully entertaining at it. The great Isaac Asimov published three thick volumes of autobiography that are a pleasure to read. Any editor who puts together an anthology projects their own tastes into it. The proof is ultimately in the work itself. And it's certainly on display here. End of sermon.
Do yourself a favour. Read this book. Maybe, Like Robert Silverberg, some of these stories will inspire you enough to begin writing yourself. Or at least to read more. And that can't be a bad thing.
Learn from a master........2002-08-28
I've used this book twice, teaching science fiction writing at MIT, and will use it a third time this year. It's an excellent introduction to "Golden Age" science fiction, with thoughtful analysis of each story by Silverberg, explaining why each was important to his development as a writer.
insightful introduction to science fiction for neophytes.......2001-12-21
whether you want to read it or write it, this is a terrific introductory course in science fiction by our finest living sf author.
An eccentric collection at best.......2001-10-17
What might seem a useful introduction to science fiction becomes mostly an ego-trip for Silverberg. He has a long introduction about the wonderfulness of being Robert Silverberg and the travails of being a science fiction writer, all of which he's said in other books over the last 30 years. The stories themselves are excellent, but hardly "classics" of science fiction. How Silverberg convinced the publisher to let him do this book is beyond me. Don't waste your time with this book.
Product Description
This study focuses on a Muslim legal science known in Arabic as usul al-fiqh. Whereas the kindred science of fiqh is concerned with the articulation of actual rules of law, this science elaborates the theoretical and methodological foundations of the law.
The Spirit of Islamic Law outlines the prominent features of Muslim juristic thought: espousal of divine sovereignty; a fixation on divine texts; an uncompromisingly intentionalist approach to the interpretation of those texts; a frank acknowledgment of the fallibility of human endeavor to capture divine intent; a toleration of legal diversity; a moralistic bent grounded in a particular social vision; and finally, a preoccupation with the affairs of private individuals--especially family relations and contracts--coupled with a concern to define the limits of governmental power.
The Spirit of Islamic Law is the fifth book in Georgia's Spirit of Laws series, which illuminates the nature of legal systems throughout the world.
Customer Reviews:
The history of how such laws were formulated makes for an involving read.......2006-06-15
Muslim legal science is a science connected to yet separate from Islamic faith, and THE SPIRIT OF ISLAMIC LAW delves into these connections and differences, examining the main features of Muslim jurisdiction and law, divine texts which are used as legal foundations, interpretations in the attempt to capture the devine as it relates to legal matters, and more. Author Bernard Weiss is a professor of Arabic and Islamic studies at the University of Utah: his treatise is both detailed yet accessible to college-level readers studying Islamic traditions. The history of how such laws were formulated makes for an involving read.

Excellent Work.......2002-11-09
This book is wonderfully written and easy to understand, even for beginners in the field, such as myself. It outlines the processes by which classical Islamic law and government came into being without being drawn out. Wonderful book.

Book Description
This book examines the authority of saints in Islam and their ability to build communities among Muslims in North Africa. It analyzes the power generated in religious communities through their allegiance to saints, a power usually identified with the term "Sufism." In the late 15th and 16th centuries, a community of Sufis in Fes (Fez), Morocco, and other urban centers in North Africa advocated this paradigm of sainthood during a time of intense political and religious crisis. Juridical sainthood, a concept that fuses Islamic legal rectitude and devotional piety, was the center of their reformist agenda. The juridical saint was to be absorbed in legal training and religious values, in ways that questioned political loyalty and dynastic legitimacy. Scott A. Kugle explores this tradition by focusing on the life and writings of Shaykh Ahmad Zarruq. Following his exile from Fes, Zarruq traveled widely over North Africa, spreading his teachings and writings and attracting followers from Morocco to Mecca. The life and teachings of Zarruq remain useful for Muslims. They are a piece of the past that present-day Muslims are rediscovering and redeploying to reconcile Islam's heritage with its very troubled post-colonial present.
