Book Description

Hailed upon publication by writers and critics alike, including Shirley Hazzard and Charles Johnson, Let the Lion Eat Straw is a dazzling novel that tells the story of Abeba Williams, whose mother abandons the poverty of the South –– and in the process her daughter –– for opportunities up North. Missing her mother, she clings to Mamma Habblesham, a woman with enviable reserves of love and hope. Their affection for each other seems boundless –– until Abeba's mother returns to take her to Brooklyn.

As Abeba grows up, her exceptional musical talent promises to be an avenue of escape. But a handsome singer distracts her, and opportunities that once seemed so close begin to fall away. Now married with children of her own, she fights to maintain the dignity of her family. Let the Lion Eat Straw is a revelation of the glory in apparently ordinary lives.

5 out of 5 stars Very Fast.......2006-07-15

One of those books you wish you read much earlier in your life. Very fast, beautifully written in a lyrical manner. A few pages but tells a story of a woman whose life seems to have taken a wrong turn (depending on the reader's perception of life). I know some authors would have written the same story in a billion words.

5 out of 5 stars Let the Lion Eat Straw - indeed the perfect book.......2005-02-09

At a local bookstore gathering that brings readers and writers together, an editor from Amistad referred to this as "the perfect book." Sure, the perfect book. What is the perfect book? Then she passed out copies and while home sick one day, I read it. Now, after finishing it 3 hours later, I weep. Ellease Southerland has indeed, crafted the perfect book. But, the reader must believe in the essential goodness, resilience and beauty we hide somewhere deep inside. Abeba Williams, from childhood to adulthood, pulls us into her life, filled with simple complications and routine events that become so much more when viewed through her absorbing eyes. We are astounded at her courage, her resilience, her patience, her love. We applaud her survival as she struggles to build a life with her real mother who has come to collect her from Mamma Habblesham, the midwife who raised her to age 5. Abeba's mother, Angela, has found a husband in New York and can can finally care for her daughter. Brooklyn collides with Abeba's simple country upbringing, but Mamma Habblesham grounded her by giving her roots that branch into the strength and wonder that help her cope, adjust, even define life on her terms. She becomes an accomplished musician, a strong child growing up an even stronger woman, in the midst of chaos and tenderness. She meets Daniel, who sings at her church and her anticipated study at Julliard falls by the wayside as she and Daniel set off on a life filled with trauma, laced with joy, joy laced with trauma. None of it is trite, false or overdone. Simple images sparkle in their honesty. After Abeba's screaming labor during the birth of her first child, Southerland crystalizes Abeba's emotion as " He was the sun that soaked up the pain." The perfect sentence, one of many, in the perfect book.

Angel Fire East marks the close of Terry Brooks's Nest Freemark-John Ross saga, which began with 1997's Running with the Demon. After a long layover in Seattle for the middle book, Knight of the Word, the fantasy-meets-modernity action returns to Nest's native Hopewell, where once again Nest and John must face off against the Void, this time in the form of ancient demon Findo Gask, who favors a black-clad evil preacher getup for his menacing needs.

Brooks's well-realized and likable cast from the previous books is back, from Nest (now 29) to Ross (haggard as ever) to Pick (still just a few inches tall) and even grown-up versions of Nest's childhood friends from Running, including Bennett, now a junkie with child. Of course, Findo Gask has assembled a creepy little Legion of Doom to harry these nice folks: a giant albino demon; a formless, flesh-eating ur'droch; and a knife-wielding Orphan-Annie-gone-bad named Penny Dreadful. And Angel Fire's main plot thread is even compelling: John Ross has caught a shape-changing, wild-magic creature of enormous power, a gypsy morph, that he and Nest must discover how to turn to the Word before Gask and his crew can capture it for the Void.

But as with Knight of the Word, wooden pacing and unconvincing transitions keep this tale from rising to the level of Brooks's previous masterworks, such as the excellent Shannara and Landover series. If you've read the first two books, it's certainly worth seeing off your old friends in Angel Fire East. But if you're--heaven forbid--new to Terry Brooks, check out his earlier work, or even his very capable novelization of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. --Paul Hughes

          Book Description

When Running with the Demon appeared two years ago, it was recognized at once as a masterpiece in the making, a bold departure that promised to revitalize contemporary urban fantasy and showcase Terry Brooks's vast storytelling gifts as never before. The second book of the series, A Knight of the Word, raised expectations even higher. Now, in Angel Fire East, sure to be hailed as his most ambitious, most accomplished work yet, Terry Brooks brings his bestselling epic trilogy of good and evil to an unforgettable close.

As a Knight of the Word, John Ross has struggled against the tireless dark forces of the Void for twenty-five years. A rootless wanderer scarred as deeply by the magic he wields as by the unspeakable horrors he has witnessed in its service, Ross is driven by dreams that show the world reduced to blood and ashes by the Void and its minions. The grim futures he dreams each night will come true unless he can stop them now, in the present. But for all his power, John Ross is only one man, while the demons he hunts--and which hunt him in turn--are legion.

Then Ross learns of the birth of a gypsy morph, a rare and dangerous creature formed of wild magics spontaneously knit together. If he can discover its secret, the morph could be an invaluable weapon against the Void. But the Void, too, knows the value of the morph, and will not rest until the creature has been corrupted--or destroyed.

Desperate, Ross returns to the town of Hopewell, Illinois, home of Nest Freemark, a young woman with magical abilities of her own. Twice before, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance, the lives of Ross and Nest have intersected. Together, they have prevailed.

But now they face an ancient evil beyond anything they have ever encountered, for a demon of ruthless intelligence and feral cunning awaits them in Hopewell. As a firestorm of good and evil erupts, threatening to consume lives and shatter dreams, Ross and Nest have but a single chance to solve the mystery of the gypsy morph--and of their own profound connection.

Yet more time has passed. Nest is back in Hopewell, having been an Olympic athlete, and John Ross grows ever more tired. They must end up working to stop a demonic preacher, and a dangerous magical source from doing bad things to small town Hopewell and the rest of the world.

Both John and Nest must struggle with the problems their own powers causes, as well as working out how to fight their opponents.

          5 out of 5 stars Best Terry Brook's Trilogy........2007-06-09

I disagree with the Editorial Reviews. In my opinion this is the best Terry Brook's trilogy. I own and have read all of the Shannara books, and
this trilogy is superior. For me, all of the books in the trilogy were true "page-turners". I found it very difficult to put them down. I love to read just before bed, and many a night I would promise myself I could read only one chapter and then find an hour later I was still reading. I really cared for the characters - wishing I could spend time with them. The mood, the suspense, the settings - everything was perfect.

Nest has magic in her. She's come to terms with that over her lifetime and now, in her late twenties, accepts it. She also accepts the fact that she is destined to lead a quiet life in the small town where her family has always lived. She will act as guardian over the nearby forest and try to keep her magic in check. This winter will be just one of many boring seasons by herself.

Then a nasty demon shows up at her door, asking about a man Nest knew years and years ago, a Knight of the Word named John Ross. The demon seems to think that John is headed for Nest's house, and he warns her that if she tries to help him or hide him, very bad things will happen.

Soon Nest's house is filled not only with John Ross and a strange magical and powerful creature called a gypsy morph in the form of a small boy, but also an old friend who has come upon hard times and her little girl.

The demon and his footsoldiers are all around them, though, making trouble and putting everyone in danger. Nest can't throw John and the boy out--if they can get the boy to communicate with them, they will have a powerful weapon in the ongoig fight against the demons of the Void. But time is running out for all of them.

I liked that even though this book was the third in a series, I felt like I could pretty well pick up on what was going on without having read the two previous books. I also liked that although this book was science fiction, it took place in a pretty normal town where nobody knew that magic existed.

The characters were really clueless. Nest should have had some idea of what was going on with Larry, and Gask should have been able to figure out what form the gypsy morph had taken. Everyone was a bit too slow to figure things out.

5 out of 5 stars Once again we are in GOOD hands with this last installment of the Word/Void.......2007-05-01

It took me quite a long time to even get the courage to purchase Running With The Demon. I believe it had been out in paperback at least a year before I got around to it. I was a fan of Shannara--and that was ALL. I had already ignored his Landover series from day one (and still haven't read them--although one day I will) but this one seemed different. The idea of a contemporary fantasy story set in the REAL world was fascinating and the loosely based similarities to the Harry Potter series is about as far off the mark as comparing the Lord of the Rings to Star Wars.

I am quite impressed overall with the entire series, and with Angel Fire East in particular. The character of Findo Gask is at once one of Brooks' more demonic creations, but in a totally different manner than anthing set before. Sure he has given us some truly horrible creatures over the years, but Findo is much more evolved than the others...and consequently is much more intelligent and cunning, and therefore almost real in how he can make your skin crawl. I loved the pacing of the story and how it all unfolded so meticulously. It almost seems as though each and every person introduced is treated as though they were the main focus of the story, and that secondary characters simply did not exist.

I have also noticed that no matter how much I enjoyed or hated a novel, there are ALWAYS those who feel as opposite from the way I do as is possible, and therefore discount my opinion of the book I reviewed. I never feel the need to preach about how if I liked any particular book that the world HAS to like it as well...and so I won't here as well. What I WOULD like to say is this: chances are if you liked Running With The Demon and A Knight Of The Word, you will more than enjoy Angel Fire East. Personally I felt it was one of the more satisfying stories Terry Brooks has ever written. He is right now in the middle of bridging the storylines of the Word and Void to Shannara with Armageddon's Children and the upcoming Elves of Cintra. Once again, I cannot WAIT to buy and read them as well...and who knows, while waiting for the last book, I may finally pick up that first Landover book that came out so long ago and give it a go...

                                  Book Description

Prepare for some adventures in "Perihelion". These poems evoke shifting states of mind and heart, from childhood terrors to the wisdom of the mystic, with all the twists of love, doubt and insight which come in between. There are monsters in this collection (but are they generated by science-fiction or the psyche?); there is grace, there is art, and there is longing. In her writing, Sarah Law traces the dynamics of relationship and of solitude, pushing lyric poetry to a playful complexity, but allowing the poignancy of our human condition to flow through each poem. Sarah Law studied literature at Cambridge and London universities, and currently teaches literature and creative writing at the University of East Anglia, Norwich. She has two poetry collections published by Stride (Bliss Tangle, 1999, The Lady Chapel, 2003). This is her third collection.

The author backs up all his info with biblical quotes and sources. A good book to share with your unsaved friends or family about what to expect in the near future!

5 out of 5 stars The signs are all around us.......2006-06-12

Hunt uses specific verses from the Bible, that COULD NOT have been fulfilled in ANY other time than the one we live in now, to show the time is very short for the "end times" events to begin.

The evidence is compelling and thought-provoking. If Bible prophecy is being fulfilled before our eyes, and it is, you need to read this book to see the reasons Hunt believes the time is short.

As for the one-star review from Mike...he confuses the "last day" or "last judgement" with the return of Christ. No where in the Bible does it say that Christ's return immediately commences the "Judgement Seat" of Christ. Read this book to decide for yourself...you will learn that what is happening in our world TODAY has already been fortold in the scripture.

1 out of 5 stars JESUS IS COMING AT THE LAST DAY........2006-01-04

It is so simple. You interpret the unclear verses by the clear verses in the Bible.

Jesus says: "Everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day"
                                          (John 6:40).

"At the last day" - not 7 or 1007 years before the last day as Hunt believes.

Jesus says: "There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words. That very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day." (John 12:48)

Hunt needs to accept the word of Jesus when He says "at the last day."

Jesus says: "The hour is coming when all who are in the graves will hear my voice and come out. Those who have done good will rise to live and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned." (John 5:28-29)

Hunt inserts 1000 years between Jesus' call and ignores the word "all".

See 2 Peter 3:10-13 for a description of the last day. The rest of the Bible agrees with Jesus not Hunt.

                                          Mike

Dave Hunt amazes the reader with his insights and in-depth analysis of "End Times" hype. Recent authors have done a lot to bring attention to this most crucial element of the Christian faith - Jesus' Return. Wonderfully written and extensively researched, this is a must for any end times library. Maranatha!

5 out of 5 stars Encouraging and Challenging.......2003-12-08

Dave Hunt combines prophecy, history, scripture, and common sense to reveal why every single Christian should believe in the pre-trib, and be looking to the sky for the return of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

                                          Thank you Dave.

This book is a detailed analysis of the "Rapture" and the "Millennium," followed by a look at other related issues. It discusses the application of unfulfilled predictions in the Old Testament, the nature of the kingdom in the teaching of Jesus, and the future of Israel and the biblical philosophy of history. The final section attempts a new approach to the interpretation of the Book of Revelations.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking study on Biblical prophecy........2005-06-17

This excellent, well written in-depth study scrutinises the wide range of issues relating to Biblical prophecy and the return of Jesus Christ.

Each and every subject is dealt with by analysing all the differing viewpoints/schools of interpretation, with the writer approaching such with due reference to Scripture and subsequently presenting his own personal views as & when appropriate in relation to Israel, the Church, the interpretation of the book of Revelation, the "Rapture" and the "Millennium" etc..

At the outset the reader's attention is drawn to what is described as the absolute accuracy of Biblical prophecy. The book citing that the declaration of future events is a major feature of the Holy Bible itself.

As the writer elaborates, the book relates how over a quarter of all the verses in the Bible contain a prediction about the future. Predictions cited as pertaining to personal, political, social, environmental, moral and meteorological issues, together with many returning to the physical return of Jesus Christ.

The writer further declaring that there are 737 separate prophecies made in Scripture, with some mentioned only once but others being mentioned up to many hundreds of times.

Of the 737 prophecies mentioned, the book reveals that 594 (over 80%) of these have already been accurately fulfilled. The remaining prophecies, which relate to the "end of the world" (which has obviously not happened yet) are shown to be taking shape at the time of writing.

This study provides clarity and insight to these issues. Whilst many readers will undoubtedly have differing opinions to some of those presented in this work, this should not prevent individuals from reading this well presented, in-depth study of an increasingly relevant subject.

                                          Highly recommended.

                                                    Book Description

The events of the future do not need to be sensationalized or embellished because the truth that is found in Scripture is more rewarding than any enhanced speculation.

This book projects an accurate and indisputable scenario of end time events, and Jesus Christ's return to rapture his people. The disciples asked Jesus two very important questions:

What will be the sign of your coming?

What will be the sign of the end times?

Jesus responded with an explicit and detailed answer. This book uses Jesus' account of his return as its authority.

This book reveals how the prophecies found in the Old Testament and in the book of Revelation are coherent when incorporated into Jesus' answer to the disciples. Future events that lead to Jesus' coming and to the end of the world are clarified in this book.

                                                    Book Description

When Now Becomes Too Late focuses on the very moment of imminent Rapture. That `twinkling of an eye' which shall instantaneously transport Christians from temporal to eternal life.

Aimed to encourage believers of the event, the work also intends to goad skeptics in and out of the Body of Messiah to renew afresh consideration of God's impending Trump while `now' is yet here.

Intertwining realities personalize the perspective of the miracle that shall touch every life on planet earth spontaneously. Life's simplest moments glow with eternal presence as earth's final stage unfolds as the backdrop.

What then the response of those who witness this event? They shall have embarked on the world's final days. Once more to consider, has now become too late?

The time it takes to read this passage is easily more than a million moments longer than that sparkling dot of time described herein. Then life for all of remaining humanity will gain the final edge.

On God's prophetic calendar this is the next major prophecy to be.

                                                    September 29, 2007

TL Farley's "When Now Becomes Too Late- The Rapture In Brief" (Xulon Press c2004) has become a classic high energy experience for the layman or biblical futurist who is intrigued by a scholarly view that pieces together prophesies and cogent arguments from scripture that call for an imminent Rapture. Farley takes the time to set the stage for his thesis by citing historic allusions from the community of faith regarding those who will be "Raptured, or caught away...a concept referenced even from the Latin of Jerome's Vulgate, `rapio' translated `snatch away.'" But the way he vaults his eloquent thesis from the past to the present is done so deftly that it can catch off guard even the most alert and spiritually minded individual.

Farley's fanciful writing style only heightens the reader's anticipation as the book's eleven chapters and epilogue are flying by. "Yet the shock is to discover that many serving Him most ardently at this moment are the very ones least prepared for this imminent prophetical riptide." Farley shows little timidity in revealing his heartfelt urgency regarding the Rapture and Jesus Christ's physical return to planet earth. "The volatility of the teaching of His Imminence couches within it the immediate threat to the status quo."

As in his more recent and equally excellent, albeit refocused effort "Distant Reaches" (Xulon Press c2007), Farley proves he is truly a master at creating literary portals which are capable of transporting the reader into unique existential experiences. For example, from "When Now Becomes Too Late" we read, "My breath was stopped. A horrendous sound from outside the earth was forcing my vision upward toward the heavens. Lack of breath accentuated my attention riveted to the skies as they separated by elements against a sound of winds ten thousand times ten thousand overwhelming with awe as light broke through the scattered pieces of disintegrating sky and the Holy Spirit whispered in my heart, `It's the Rapture, Terry, don't be afraid.' The mind moved at a rate eclipsing any speed ever described by man, all the while capturing every collapse of the realities of this now, sensing the body hurtling upwards through the infinite openings of space itself, defying all intellectual strivings for human comprehension. This was it! Even as I struggled to identify the happenings, bodies all around the sky vaulted upwards."

"When Now Becomes Too Late" should be read by many more people, and as soon as possible. It should occupy a place on any serious Bible scholar's bookshelf. Farley's pre-tribulation Rapture defense is as well argued as his intense concern that those seeking for meaning in life are wise to seek Jesus Christ, the Messiah before it's too late. Farley is a prophet who, like his biblical counterparts, issues an urgent call to Kingdom activity. "Beyond that the proclamation of such a high profile subject has excited many in the Body of Messiah to believe once again that not only all are within reach, but that even those seemingly most disenfranchised are possible to be claimed for Jesus, and all attempts are indeed worth the cross." Reading "When Now Becomes Too Late" is also well worth the effort.

                                                    5 out of 5 stars understanding imminent.......2006-09-11

for the saved and the unsaved this is a must-read. mr. farley has really done his homework. many biblical and non-biblical references are made that really draw the conclusion that the rapture of the saints is imminent. for the saved it is assurance of missing the tribulation and spending eternity with our lord and savior, jesus christ. for the unsaved it is an 83 page plea for finding jesus, before now becomes too late.

                                                    5 out of 5 stars Review.......2002-05-28

A very thought-provoking work; integrating science, theology, and personal experience, "When Now Becomes Too Late" moves the reader through the very essence of imminency and man's perception thereof.

                                                    I recommend this book.

Someone gave me a copy of this book, and I was reluctant at first to read it. It struck me initially as rather cheesy and obsolete.

After the first chapter in though, it caught on and I found myself questioning my thoughts on imminency; like life, we cannot truly "own" time. Our presence here right now is based solely on the discretion of the God of all gods and we are treading on thin ice. If at all there is a chance we can change our paths, and if by God's good will we come to our senses to realize it, action is necessary immediately.

This was a good book and I'm glad someone told me about it.

5 out of 5 stars When Now Becomes Too Late.......2002-05-01

A refreshing look at the Rapture and what imminent means to each of us. This is a timely work given the events taking place now in the Middle East. As a believer in Messiah Y'shua, I gained a real sense of the urgency to share the Gospel with others while it is still called 'today'. This book is an eye opener to the reality that we cannot control time. A wake up call to believers to be about our Father's business and to skeptics to consider the claims of Jesus as the prophetic clock continues it's countdown. I recommend this book to everyone before it's too late!
