NOT BAD..........2006-09-06
I recieved this book over the Labour Day weekend and went through it with a fine toothed comb; THEN I read the reviews.
The book CAN be tough to get through; BUT the authors DO emphasize a beginner's knowledge of PhotoShop:
1. The lessons are NOT bad; if you do them in small chunks.
2. Go to a section that interests you first; then backtrack.
3. DO THE WORK IN THE BOOK!!! You REALLY need to..PRACTICE!!
My ONLY complaint is that the "LEVELS" video file DID NOT work!!
I tried on my I-Mac and my HP laptop!!
The files, swatches, etc seemed to work fine.
BOTTOM LINE: Use this book along with "The DC Guide to Coloring & Lettering Comics" and BlueLine Pro's " Digital Coloring for Comics"
and you will be fine...!!!
Fundamentals are there.......2006-05-07
This is the first book I have looked at on the subject. It is not well organized if one is looking for step by step lessons. It is photoshop specific but not version specific. The authors therefore try not to get too menu oriented. Which is fine by me. I use Corel Painter and I haven't had any trouble using their techniques in Painter.
The reason being, the fundamentals are presented and reinforced in every example. The fundamentals are what is important. So no matter what software you are using, you will learn how these artists use layers, paint brush, airbrush, burn, dodge, color balance, and smudge to create some very nice art work.
one of the best.......2006-04-21
I'm sorry I have to disagree with Linda's review. I found my CD to be totally overloaded with everything needed to go along with the book: brushes, swatches and tons of line art from the comics to exercise with. I've bought the best tutorial CDs from the top pros, bought the best books comic coloring, and none of them shared as much of the fine-point-nitty-gritty techniques as this book does - I'm referring to comic book coloring only - not digital painting. The book can be tagged vague, if you do not have some knowledge of Photoshop. But, on the other hand, what it does teach you is enough to give you the tools you do need to create what the book and CD supplies you with. Bottom line: it's a short book, color from start to finish, and very very generous in sharing the tricks of the trade. It just takes your desire to become a good colorist to complete the journey. The only downside I see here by Amazon is that they should give you a Search Inside feature so you can see for yourself some of the eye-popping stuff you will learn. Enjoy.
not bad.......2005-12-29
As a professional illustrator working on my first graphic novel, I went in search of reference material on some established techniques in comic art these days. I found some of the hints and tips in this book to be extremely helpful. The skill of the authors is readily apparent, as opposed to in a great many other "how-to" books out there in which the author (read: perpetrator) has no business teaching anything. I read this book at a store and have just ordered it, so I can't say how useful the accompanying CD is, but I'm sure anyone with a basic knowledge of photoshop will find it very useful.
Not informative enough.......2005-12-11
This is not a very good book if you want to learn how to color for comics. The instructions are very vauge, and you'll actually have to have quite a bit of photoshop skills in order to know what he is talking about. Not to mention that the CD that came with it doesn't even have anything on it! If you want to learn how to color for comics, I suggest getting somekind of book on photoshop and learning the tools, then simply observing actual comics to see what they do, and also experiment with photoshop because I learned way more from fooling around with the program than reading about it in this book.

One-of-a-kind book.......2004-02-19
This book is really really HARD to obtain. There are only a handful of publications of this book. If you have a copy of it (like I do), don't part with it!!
There are about 100 pages in this book, which are colored obviously. It covers almost ALL the computer graphic (CG) coloring aspect known in the comic industry. Everything from basic color layout to sophisticated special effect (like making clouds, glowing eyes, etc). Art are referenced to the Antartic Press Studio (like Gold Digger, etc).
Again, I can't say how impressed this book is. It is loaded with information (i.e., one page have typically 2-4 smaller panels in it). If you can master all the materials in this book, you should start looking for a syndicate/sponsor. Please remember a couple of notes: 1) this book is mainly focused on comics (particularly anime-style), though you can applies these to real-life illustrations; 2) this book requires you to have Adobe Photoshop (any full version from 3.0 to 7.0, LE-versions would not work); and 3) lastly, this book demands that you got your drawing basics down! It does not cover any drawing instructions at all. So before you start up your Photoshop, you should see that your drawing foundation is firm.
This book also includes a CD (that's why the list price is so high). CD includes all the black and white images for you to practice. It also has lesson images (images with notes on it). And a large array of custom brushes and color swatches that will greatly improve the productivity of your coloring. This is one-of-a-kind book and you can't find anything similar to this. If you can't get this, there is another publication coming out called "How to Color for Comics." I predict it will be similar but with even more details. Highly recommended.
Book Description
Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel's innovative fashion ideas-jersey knit fabrics, easy-to-wear garments based on men's sportswear, showy costume jewelry, and the little black dress-challenged the world of fashion head on. This lavishly illustrated book focuses on Chanel the couturiere and her immense influence on the way women choose to look in the modern world. Using previously unpublished material, the fashion icon is examined in depth-her career, her style, her workroom, her customers, and her rivals.
Chanel's revolutionary style is examined in vivid detail, from her emergence in the early twentieth century through her glorious "comeback period" of the fifties and sixites to her legacy as the inspiration behind the exciting contemporary creations of the House of Chanel. As exciting as a front row seat at a couture show, Chanel: The Couturiere at Work is a compelling look at the empire of one of the indisputable geniuses of twentieth-century fashion.
Customer Reviews:
Thin book with glossy photos.......2007-04-08
The writing is not very good - more like a stream of advertorials. There is overwhelming praise of Chanel's work - flattery more like it - without any criticism or analysis. However the pictures are good if you are collecting photos of Chanel's clothing designs over time. "Chanel and Her World" is a better book - it was put together with more thought. "Chanel: The Couturiere At Work" is just a thin book - more like a magazine, with insubstantial prose. Get it used.
A 'must' for any serious fashion collection.......2006-11-06
Chanel: The Couturiere At Work is a lovely survey of fashion icon Coco Chanel and her innovative fashion ideas, and belongs in any collection boasting a focus on fashion. Her style is examined in depth; from her first early creations in the early 20th century through her design changes over the decades and her creations through the House of Chanel. Loaded with black and white and color examples from all the periods, Chanel The Couturiere At Work is a 'must' for any serious fashion collection.
"Coco" and why she mattered ..........2004-12-28
Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel is adequately profiled in this book; from her very humble beginnings to her rise and fall -- and rise again -- this is an insightful biography of the woman and her work, which were for all intents and purposes inseparable. The authors capture not just the drive and determination which propelled Coco to the heights, but shrewdly illustrate how startlingly ahead of her time the designer was, and how much her work and ideas permeate fashion, even to the present day. Don't let the absurdities and excess of so much Chanel on the runway today fool you -- this woman was a visionary in her time, and the quintessence of her designs was paradoxically American; sporty, practical, possessed of a spare elegance, though she was in every way a Frenchwoman through and through. The early drawings of her first dresses are included here and are fascinating. Precious few exist, because -- as they book tells -- Coco Chanel preferred to design on the body, using live models. She was a perfectionist par excellence who introduced trends that transcended their time, and this modest book is a worthy addition to your library if you have any interest at all in the foundations of twentieth century fashion. There are many books on Chanel; I haven't read them all, so this isn't a comparative review, just the opinions of a fan of the couturiere as artist.
For Chanel-cluless to Chanel-expert.......2000-04-13
(nermin8@yahoo.com) How to recall sectet life of the most influencal fashion Mademmoiselle of all times? For the first Chanel-biographyst it was a nightmare...So we should give a huge respect to evry new Chanel biography, and not just for this reason... Also this biography deserves great respect. Though, some questions aren't yet answered (they may never be), this colourful book, introduces us to some new detailes about the "Chanel cut" as well as Coco herself. Must read to any haute couture lover or dreamer...
Book Description
Sherman is a carefree shark; he's carefree because he doesn't know any better. Fillmore the Sea Turtle, Sherman's sidekick, is a philosophical sort who does what he can to make up for Sherman's lack of sense. Ernest is a fish of indeterminate species with the technical savvy and dubious intentions of an ace computer hacker; in fact, he is one. Sherman's wife, Megan, possesses a ruthless yet nurturing nature. Hawthorne, the macho hermit crab, is not actually a hermit, but he is actually crabby. Thornton is an expatriate polar bear who drifted into the tropical lagoon on a wayward iceberg and decided to stay.
Captain Quigley, the token human (or "hairless beach ape," in the local dialect), is bent on Sherman's destruction. This ambition may be traced to the fact that Quigley is a crusty old fisherman and Sherman is a fish. Or it may be traced to a long-ago incident in which Sherman ate Quigley's leg.
In addition to satirizing human behavior, Sherman and his friends occasionally have to contend with the threat of encroachment by the beach apes on their unspoiled tropical home. The strip has been lauded by activist groups for promoting the importance of marine conservation.

Sherman's Lagoon Collection #8, A Prime Catch.......2005-07-20
We met Sherman & Friends in the SFO Chronicle, but they aren't in our local newspaper, so we acquire each collection as it is published. Jim Toomey's undersea cartoons are laugh-out-loud for our family. Then they go into the sailboat's library.
Catch of the Day: Sherman's Lagoon Collection #8.......2004-12-18
I personally think Jim Toomey is the consistently funniest cartoonist working today.
When I open my morning paper, I go right to Sherman's Lagoon first thing, because I know it is going to make me laugh.
This collection illustrates just how funny man-eating sharks can be, especially when supported by crabby con-artist crabs, bookish sea turtles and polar Bear party animals.
I put Sherman's Lagoon on the same plane as Calvin and Hobbes, Bloom County and the Far Side: classics all.
Fun With the Fishes.......2004-12-16
This eighth collection of Sherman's Lagoon proves that the waters of creativity have not dried up. Although the back cover may be a little disturbing to some, most of the contents are just plain fun. Some of this volume's story arcs include:
Sherman starts a band
Fear Factor Comes to the Lagoon
Hawthorne starts a fitness center
Antiques Roadshow comes to the lagoon
Fillmore succeeds at Ascension Island
The Hawaiian vacation
And lots more including appearances by many old favorite characters. If you are looking for a fun read and some chuckles, you won't go wrong with this one.
under the sea hi-jinks.......2004-11-04
If you've ever wondered what the fish in the documentaries do when the cameras are off, then this is the book series for you. From the first page of the book, you are trasported to Kapupu Island Lagoon and the world of Sherman, a not so Great White shark, his femenist wife, a sea turtle who tries and fails in the mating game, a money hungry, federally watched hermit crab, and an uber-hacker fish who is a member of anarchy anonymous. Their world parallels humanity. Its a riot!!!!
