With a bit of simple preparation, an ordinary piece of muslin becomes a canvas for the intriguing art of flower pounding. Taped to the muslin and whacked with a hammer, nearly any type of flower or leaf surrenders its pigment, leaving behind a ghostly image resembling watercolor painting. By outlining these delicate images with permanent marker and stitching over them, Ann Frischkorn and Amy Sandrin turn them into lovely quilts. Some specifically resemble the flowers from which they came: roses, alstroemeria, irises, morning glories, and many other blossoms arranged in a central panel, ringed by a quilted--and sometimes pieced--border. In others the flowers have been pounded through stencils, to lend their translucent hues to shapes of fish, coffee cups, even a skateboarder designed and pounded by Sandrin's son (yes, kids will love this noisy, rewarding activity).

Once they've explained fabric preparation and the specifics of the technique itself, the authors present a gallery of 40 of their quilts, accompanied by commentary about what inspired each design and some of the flowers appearing in it. The project section offers another seven designs, with brief directions about creating them. The actual quilting and piecing instructions are quite cursory; though the designs are relatively basic, at least a nodding acquaintance with quilting methods is presumed. As for the actual pounding, the authors recommend experimenting with various types of flowers, remarking that the color of the bloom is not necessarily the color after pounding and that even flowers from the same plant picked on different days may result in different shades. But a bit more information about what general color ranges they tend to expect would have been helpful. The "flower index" at book's end--composed of 57 color photos representing a selection of flowers used throughout the quilts--seems like an ideal place to have indicated something about this. Still, this is an interesting and different approach to fabric adornment and might be nice on wearables too, although the authors don't mention whether the flower-pounded fabric will stand up to washing. Further experimentation ought to resolve this issue as well. --Amy Handy

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and artistic results from your garden!.......2001-06-19

You may be wondering what in the world "Flower Pounding" is. Put simply, it is the process of transferring plant pigments to specially treated fabric via pounding with a hammer to create floral imagery reminiscent of water color painting. When I read through the book I was amazed at the beautiful projects within and wanted one for my very own.

The book has a wonderful alphabetic index of common garden flowers in the back and all of the gallery photographs list the flowers used in the projects for reference which I found to be very helpful. Along with detailed visual instructions for every step of the process from fabric treatment through pounding to completion with outlining, there are numerous photographs in the book of scenes created by the authors, Ann Frischkorn and Amy Sandrin. They have also included instructions for nine projects complete with quilting how-tos and templates to get you started. And, lest you think that this a project limited to the spring flower season, there are examples using fall flowers as well as poinsettias.

The authors glibly suggest that once you try flower pounding, you will never look at flowers the same. I must say that they are right in this assessment. Just the other day, I was at Costco and I eyeballed the fresh flower bouquets as I walked by. But, I was not thinking how pretty they were, no, I was wondering how they would look pounded!

Try it and see if you don't start thinking the same way!

5 out of 5 stars I'm having a lot of summer fun with this.....KATE.......2001-06-15

A friend introduced me to Flower Pounding. We are having a great time with this. The authors give a lot of great tips on their website. They also state that your Flower Pounding works of art are dry-cleanable. This is great news! We have also tried color copying our poundings to transfer paper and having them ironed onto t-shirts. It worked great. Now they truly are washable. I don't see why you couldn't iron them onto a quilt block too. The possibilities are endless with this technique. Thanks to Amy and Ann for making my summer and my quilting a lot more interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent project for kids and adults alike!!!.......2001-06-09

I'm addicted to flower pounding. My kids love it, too...the only thing that gets washed after my kids do an art project is the kids . I've worked with alum tons before and if you're concerned that it's going to rot the fabric, just rinse it out. No big deal. This is a wonderful, wonderful book and I highly recommend it. Such a wonderful break from all the "same old, same old" that's already out there. You won't be disappointed with flower pounding.

5 out of 5 stars Flower Pounding Surprise.......2001-06-01

I thought Flower Pounding the oddest title, until I saw it. It's a must buy book. It's beatuiful with easy-to-understand instructions and a dash of humor. I love quilts and gardens and this showed me a great new way to enjoy both. I'm doing a project this summer and hope to use it for a youth group activity next year.

5 out of 5 stars Flower Pounding is as addictive as it is beautiful!.......2001-06-01

I was fortunate to take a flower pounding class with Amy. It was such a delight to have the author demonstrate just how easy and beautiful this process is. By the end of class I had made my own gorgeous print. Everyone was delighted by the beautiful results and had a blast making their work of art. You will never again look at flowers the same way! (Irises are my favorite...so far.) In fact, you'll be itching to pound every petal you can get your hands on. When I got home that day my husband and 6 year old son asked to try their hands at it. I'm embarassed to admit it, but their prints were even prettier than mine. My son especially loved this project and can't wait to get more flowers. Kudos to Amy and Ann for creating a sensational new way to make breathtaking quilts the whole family can be involved in. (And for those of you wanting to take a class like I did, check out patchworktwins.com for their class listing.)

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully stress-relieving craft using flowers & leaves!.......2004-03-18

I found Laura Martin's book over a year ago, and following the very easy to understand steps, have learned to pound flowers, leaves, and stems onto treated material (she gives the receipe)and also on paper. I have been able to spend many stress-relieving moments with my board and hammer in my little flower garden on cool mornings capturing and preserving the lovely blossoms which I have used to make very special cards, gifts, and treasures that will last a lifetime. I am now teaching this art to a few good friends and some young girls in our homeschool group, encouraging them to buy this book! My 9 year old daughter and I love to make "Flower Fairies" and "Flower Ballarinas" to put on cards, in frames, and on material for pillows and handmade journal covers, etc. The ideas shared have endless possibilities! If you have had a stressful day, go outside in a shaded area, sit on a blanket with your supplies, pick a few wildflowers, or blooms from your garden, or even some from the flowers you find in the floral market of your grocery store, and pound to your hearts content! I especially appreciate Laura Martin's knowledge of flowers shared in her "Plant Guide" in the back of the book. It has inspired me to plant more flowers, spend more time at the floral market and public gardens. I have even purchased seeds from a Wildflower Company online to grow this spring on our 1/2 acre of land that is usually overgrown with weeds! When I visit our kids in Oregon next month, we plan to find some ferns on our hikes that we will pound while taking a rest from our hiking. We will have these beautiful plants preservered as a wonderful reminder of our visit! As a homeschool family, we are using this art to teach our daughter about botany, keeping a visual record of the plants & wildflowers in a notebook, and then looking up the names in books at the library. And we are learning how to cultivate the flowers and are keeping a diary of that process! Highly recommend this book and craft for Garden Clubs, Girl Scouts, and the boys like it, too!

5 out of 5 stars Flower Pounding is Awesome.......2001-06-22

The Art and Craft of Flower Pounding is awesome. This arts and crafts book is well written with easy to understand directions. The photographs of the projects presented in this book is a motivator in itself. The ideas are endless. Flower pounding is easy enough to do for a child's summer project as well as for an adult. My family is really enjoying this new craft so much that we had to go out and purchase a few more hammers! I highly recommend this book - especially if you are looking for a new, easy and unusual craft - this is it!!!!

    Book Description

"The only true innovations in fashion over the past decade have been in sportswear." —Alice Rawsthorn, biographer of Yves Saint Laurent and Director of London's Design Museum

One of the most dominant cultural influences today is sports. The stars are megastars, their faces instantly recognizable. Sports products have become designer labels in their own right, as well as having a significant impact on fashion, from haute couture to street style.

In the 1990s advances in textile and garment technology, much of it especially developed by the sports industry itself, but also inherited from research for space travel, the military, industry, and medicine, resulted in ever more sophisticated sportswear. Crucial fractions of a second can be saved in modern speed-sports by wearing the latest designs. In "extreme" sports, survival itself may depend on the properties of the chosen clothing. There are now sports clothes and accessories specifically made to speed the runner, streamline the swimmer, protect the snowboarder, or insulate the mountaineer.

This wonderfully illustrated book, written by two experts on revolutionary textiles, describes new fabrics (including those made of metal, glass, or ceramic yarns) and their amazing properties. It explains the design processes for making clothes that mimic the carapace of an insect, are seamless, or have venting systems. It also includes the latest fashions that owe their stylish futuristic look to the innovations of sportswear, and is completed by a glossary of technical terms and a directory of designers and manufacturers. 260 photographs and illustrations, 256 in color.

Homicide detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim investigate murders specific to super-hero cases. And with all super-heroes declared illegal, a Powers crime wave has hit the city, and hit it hard!

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

This is a restart for the Powers series. After the near cataclysmic events of the last arc of the story, the US government has cracked down on the use of powers, and it has become illegal. This applies to being used for good, or for ill.

Telling superpowered individuals what to do is one thing, stopping them is another. A Retro Girl lookalike appears, and Walker is shocked to discover who it is.

3 out of 5 stars Another pothole in a bumpy road........2006-05-18

Brian Michael Bendis, Powers: Legends (Marvel, 2005)

Powers has been an inconsistent series, and these days it's still inconsistent, but in a different way; certain aspects of the series have finally reached a point where they're consistently fantastic, while others are pretty consistently ludicrous.

Walker and Pilgrim are finally back together for what seems to be for good-- though nothing is assured in the world of Powers-- and the President as declared the use of powers to be illegal. As anyone with half a brain would expect, when you outlaw something, only those who would use it for evil still use it. Walker and Pilgrim are reduced to cleaning up the messes, for there's no real way to arrest a power any more, unless they screw up somehow-- until someone in a Retro Girl costume, with real powers, takes down a suspect Walker and Pilgrim are pursuing, raising the question: will good powers turn outlaw in order to return to fighting evil?

The parallel to today's "if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will own guns" argument is obvious, and as right as Bendis' take on this is, it's delivered with all the grace and subtlety of a dead fish to the belly. The clumsiness of the storyline delivery is doubly confusing when, after all this time, Bendis is finally starting to get all his ducks in a row; this is the first issue in which Pilgrim's character has seemed to actually be something consistent, for one.

It's decent, but frustration is beginning to take its toll. It needs to cohere, or Bendis and Oeming risk losing their fan base. ** ½

5 out of 5 stars Passion of the Powers.......2005-09-13

Definitely a must-have for all comic fans, especially 'Powers' collectors. If you don't already have this buy it! If you're a non 'Powers' fan buy this book, read it and splash out on all the other available trade paperbacks and then enjoy this book on a whole new level.

5 out of 5 stars Best Graphic Novel Series.......2005-08-02

If you're a fan of graphic novels...this is a fantastic series. I recommend reading the TPB in order...I've read all of them so far and hope for more in the near future!

5 out of 5 stars Bendis is the Best & Powers is his best........2005-07-28

Bendis is a treasure: A writer of substance and quality who happens to work in Comics. Powers, which is created, controlled and owned by Bendis is his best series (though the first 3 hardcover volumes of Ultimate Spider-man are equally superb in a more 'family-friendly' way, and his take on Daredevil in Hardcover Vols. 2-5 really inject life and depth into the classic, but sometimes bland character). The Only concern is Marvel overworking him. They keep giving him new duties, and Bendis takes them on eagerly. Seems they can't turn down any idea from their best writer and Bendis keeps coming with them.

Vol. 8 may not be his best work, but Powers is a must read series. (Also Avon Oeming's artwork is classy, clear and tells the story wonderfully. This isn't a book dominated by the artwork, and I mean that as a high compliment.)

5 out of 5 stars crazy about MAD.......2007-05-07

Have been a reader of MAD off and on over the years, as the magazine is not so easily available in Bombay, India. I accidentally happened to browse Amazon on my friends id and discovered a whole lot of compilations and as of now have most of them, except those which have not already been delivered. Must say that reading and re-reading the compilations and sharing and discussing them with friends is a silver lining to an otherwise long and tiring day.Waiting impatiently for the delivery of Mad Archives and the Don Martin Special.

Just go ahead and BUY this and all the other mads and die laughing. Its a worthwhile investment for good health and of course fights with friends ( Do make it a point to print your name in INDELIBLE ink on EACH page )its your copy and your investment of course.

    2 out of 5 stars TOO SMALL.......2006-11-16

I have Mad About The Sixties and Mad About The Seventies. Both of these publications are 8-1/4" x 10-1/2" (87 square inches), or about the same size as the original magazines. For some totally inexplicable reason, the aptly self-named "Idiots" at Mad decided to downsize Mad About The Fifties to 6-1/4" x 7-3/4" (48 square inches), a little over half the size of the original magazine. The print is much smaller, as are the drawings. In reducing the size of the drawings, much of the original detail is lost. This is particularly noticeable with artists such as Jack Davis, where exquisite detail is one of the hallmarks of his craft. The "Idiots" dropped the ball on this one.

    5 out of 5 stars A great MAD Book.......2006-06-12

This is a great and very funny book. It collects comics and features from various MAD Magazines during 1952-1959. It is a great deal, and is the perfect size for reading during class.

5 out of 5 stars Good old mad!.......2006-04-10

The best of the fifties was not easy to find but it was worth the wait! I didn't find anything wrong with the size, it reads just fine like this.

    3 out of 5 stars Small, again........2005-10-24

I don't rank this book higher because of the size. I don't know why the publishers made it again. I have from Mad about the sixties to Mad about the eighties and the size of the books is just perfect. They reduce the size in Mad about the nineties and made again with this one. Sometimes it's hard to read but anyway not a bad compilation.

Of all the recent collections assembled from the archives of MAD magazine, this volume might be the most interesting. It shows the beginnings of the magazine as a comic book, its transformation into a "slick" three years later in 1955, and its settling down into a familiar format under the stewardship of Al Feldstein.

The early material, as tame as it is by today's standards, shows quite clearly what the hubbub was all about: Harvey Kurtzman, Willie Elder, Wally Wood, and the rest parody comic characters with a zany zest that is infectious. This book boasts color reproductions of MAD's comic book highlights, including "Starchie," "Superduperman," and "Batboy and Rubin." Many readers will remember these stories, if not from the first time around, then from the Ballantine paperback collections so ubiquitous in the 1960s and '70s. MAD About the Fifties shows MAD's tentative transformation into an American institution; this tentativeness, far from being a drawback, results in the only experimental period in the humor magazine's 45-year run (who knew that Stan Freberg, Bob and Ray, and Ernie Kovacs contributed?). Kurtzman's departure in 1956 brought in Al Feldstein, who would expand the magazine's appeal from the thousands to the millions. Purists are still debating whether this was a good idea or a sellout--MAD About the Fifties allows you to decide for yourself.

Aside from historical pop culture interest and the powerful desire among aficionados to complete the set, (MAD About the Sixties and MAD About the Seventies were released previously), MAD About the Fifties also includes some darn funny material. As usual, the art has aged better than the writing--but what art it is! Few have been better than Wood, Elder, Kurtzman, Davis, Jaffee, Martin, and all the rest. MAD About the Fifties contains more of their gems; it deserves a space in any MAD reader's library. --Michael Gerber

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The original 50's Humor in a Jugular Vein of "Mad" magazine.......2002-08-14

I have the complete "Mad" from the E.C. Collection, which is limited to just the original comic book from the Fifties, not to be confused with the black & white magazine that has been a rite of passage for adolescents for the past half century. "Mad" was the only title to survive the purge at E.C. in the wake of the adoption of the comics book code, which put an end to "Tales from the Crypt" and its cousins. To get something of a hint about what this was about, check out the article "Baseball is Ruining Our Children" by "Frederick Werthless, M.D." Obviously, this is as thinly veiled as you can get in going after Fredric Wertham, the infamous author of "Seduction of the Innocent."

Anyhow, "Mad About the Fifties" presents some of the best of both the original comic and the early magazine. The Foreword consists of a brief history of the origin of "Mad" and its early days. The first half is devoted to the comic book years (1952-55) features 18 of the first 22 covers (including the infamous Composition cover). Among the classic stories reprinted in color are "Lone Stranger," "Superduperman," "Melvin of the Apes," "Ping Pong," "Sherlock Shomes," "Bat Boy and Rubin," "Starchie," and "Mickey Rodent." No scared cows here, boys and girls, as everybody is fair game. You will notice that a lot of the subject comes from the comics and the movies, although one of the two black & white stories from this period is "Howdy Dooit."

When "Mad" became a black & white magazine (1955-59), the E.C. gang broadened their horizons. In addition to a couple dozen covers reproduced in color, there are some choice selections of some of the great magazine ad parodies from that period (e.g., "Great Moments in Medicine: Presenting the Bill" from "Park-David"). Another recurring gag from this period was the "Confidential Information Dept." which looks at coverups regarding George Washington, Capt. John Smith, and Snow White (separate articles, people, separate articles). Particularly timely now would be the feature on "Elvis Pelvis." Historical footnote: The most controversial thing in this magazine was apparently the "Bringing Up Bonnie Prince Charlie" from the "Comic Strip Heroes (Taken From Real Life)" feature, which was reprinted in a British tabloid where it caused a stir.

My biggest surprise in reading through the early "Mad" magazines was the use of celebrity writers, which included Stan Freberg, Ernie Kovacs, Tom Lehrer, Danny Kay, Bob and Ray, and Sid Caesar. However, most of us will remember the artists: Jack Davis, Wallace Wood, Kelly Freas, Joe Orlando, Harvey Kurtz man, and Don Martin. I was sort of surprised that the magazine provided less parodies than we would normally expect (they do takeoff on "The Ed Sullivan Show," "Gunsmoke" and "Perry Mason").

I checked this out because I am working on a history of American popular culture for the 20th century going decade by decade for class and one of the best ways to find out what everybody was talking about is to see who was being made fun of by "Mad." But you definitely have to know a little bit about the time to enjoy the humor (e.g., who was married to Elizabeth Taylor at any given point in the decade, who was Hyman Rickover, what was Hi-Fi, etc.). There are companion volumes for the Sixties and Seventies, and one can assume "The Usual Gang of Idiots" will continue to turn out this volumes from time to time as the years go by.

    4 out of 5 stars Historic Humor.......1999-12-09

I would urge anyone interested in contemporary US history to buy this book or any other of the "MAD About The...." titles. MAD defined, reflected and revolted an era. There is so much more here than meets the F.B.I. It's fun, moves at a pretty good pace, aids digestion, calms jittery nerves and will shrink hemmorhoids without surgery!

5 out of 5 stars Peace and love, baby, Alfred's back!.......1999-10-10

This book is a shagadelic romp through the pages of MAD magazine with reproductions of the most hilarious spoofs and parodies of the 60's. Movie takeoffs include "201 Minutes of a Space Idiocy", "East Side Story" and "Flawrence of Arabia". TV satires include "Star Blecch", "Bananaz", "The Man From A.U.N.T.I.E.", "The Pwgitive", "Lizzie", and "Hokum's Heroes".

I was a kid in the 60's and enjoyed the original magazines. But when we moved from Seattle to the thriving metropolis of Olympia, WA, the magazines were given away to neighborhood pals. If, like, me, MAD Magazine was a part of your life back then (and hopefully it still is), you'll rediscover your funnybone and stay home from work with a bad case of laughing sickness while you pore through this tome.

If not for you, give a copy as a gift. And if a buddy or relative is in the hospital convalescing, I guarantee that the gift of this book will lift their spirits!
