The narrator of Thomas Sanchez's fourth novel teaches art history in America, but he dreams of Europe--or more specifically, of Spain. The Professor (as he identifies himself) specializes in a Spanish painter of the 1940s, Francisco Zermano, to whom he has devoted a spate of scholarly articles. He also spends hours staring at the man's paintings, trying to imagine the stories behind them. This iconographic detective is particularly curious about one bit of recurrent imagery: the body of a beautiful woman, which is rumored to belong to Louise Collard, the painter's muse.

As Day of the Bees opens, in fact, Louise has just died alone in a small provincial village, and the Professor rushes to France to learn more about her role in Zermano's life. There he finds a pile of correspondence--and a revelation. According to legend, the artist treated Louise cruelly and abandoned her. Yet the letters reveal a deep and doomed love, one which is forever shattered when Louise is raped by a platoon of enemy soldiers (whom she later describes in her letters as "bees," a wonderfully eerie motif). Zermano, already beaten with a tire iron, is forced to watch the entire event. Here Louise recalls how the rape ruined her life, and its paradoxical resemblance to the redemption of true erotic love:

I have discovered something unnerving--that a woman in sexual ecstasy with her man forgets all detail; when it's over she wants to return and explore this abyss that still makes her tremble. The same thing can happen when she is raped, but for a different reason. Where joy once deleted memory, horror now destroys it. In two acts in her life can a woman lose all consciousness: in the act of lovemaking, and in rape, its cruel parody.
After discovering Louise's letters, many of them never sent, the Professor embarks on a search for the aging Zermano, hoping to help set the record straight. In these chapters, the violent and tragic love story at the heart of Day of the Bees is nicely counterbalanced by an obsessive academic's comedy of errors. Like most of his kind, the narrator is late for trains, professorial to the bitter end, and devoted to (in every sense of the word) ghosts. --Emily White

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Novels of the Century.......2004-04-29

Day of the Bees is an incredibly beautiful novel where every word is delicious and every twist and turn breathtaking and heartbreaking. I haven't ever come across such a magical and interesting heroine like Louise. She haunts me still days after having read the book. And the ending: WOW!!! You will be blown away by the ending and will have a unique journey all the way there. I am a lucky reader for having read Day of the Bees and I can't imagine anyone who has ever really been in love or has been vulnerable to desire not liking this incredible treat of a novel. There is nothing not to like about it, plain and simple. I highly recommend Day of the Bees.

1 out of 5 stars Pretentious and unoriginal.......2003-08-18

Like many other readers, I picked the book after reading the promising blurb, and the beautiful cover. Elements such as the French Resistance, the fiery passion of an artist and a mysterious, seclusive woman, secrets lost in the past all seemed very intriguing.
Well, this book has nothing to offer. It is actually so forgettable and full of cliche that the reader feels as if he/she has received an undeserved slap in the face.
Most of it is in the format of letters, which however are also foolish, since it is as if the characters are retelling their story without any personal views on it, so don't expect much.
As for the French Resistance theme it is a small part of the book, and without many if any historical elements and the role the characters play didn't captivate me at all.
Art... Where, exactly? Why does it matter that the male character is a painter? What is the significance of his being an artist?
No answer.
There are some pretentiously lyrical sexual scenes, which serve practically no purpose and most of the text actually has that supposedly lyrical and poetic edge to it.
If you'd like to read a truly beautiful story with themes of art and love in it, then I highly recommend "Possession: A Romance", by A.S.Byatt

3 out of 5 stars not quite right........2003-02-12

Thomas Sanchez has been ill-served by his publisher, Flamingo, (paperback). Whoever wrote the cover blurb had obviously not read the book. The action does NOT take place 50 years after the death of Louise, one of the two central characters in this love story. In fact she has only just died and her humble estate has only just been finalised. The language of the book is certainly poetic but there is a thread of violence and sexual perversity underneath. It is a great story of love of the kind that survives only because it is not corrupted by marriage or mundane living together. The horror of war and injury, the pettiness of people when they are reduced to basic survival is well illustrated.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious tale of passionate love.......2002-02-25

A sweeping tale of passionate love set during the turbulent events of WW2 and spanning 50 years.

Zermano world renowned Spanish painter and his beautiful French lover Louise Collard were separated during the Nazi occupation of France. The world thought Zermano had tired of Louise, she who had once fired his inspiration for his paintings and his lust. In the end it was Louise who left the legacy and Louise who led the way. After her death intimate letters written by her to Zermano, but never posted were accidentally found. They recount the period during the war when she and Zermano were separated, when unspeakable horrors and cruelties abounded in war torn Europe.

Passionate, beautifully written letters describe the love between Zermano and Louise and recount Louise's life during their enforced separation.

This is not a soppy love story, but a powerfully, deeply moving and well written historical tale of two tragic lovers, touched with passion, politics and art. A wonderful book I didn't want it to end and which I highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Simply a magnificant escape.......2002-02-14

I've become disenchanted with American's views on literature after reading the other reviews.

This book is a comedy -- a masterful comedy, with tons of wit. If you can read with a light heart and an open mind, you will experience one of the richest novels you have ever cracked open. The author is brilliant and rare among contemporary writers in writing something that is not a screenplay, but an enjoyable read. This book is an experience in itself. Don't miss the opportunity to enjoy an American writer who will be remembered as one of our best.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

A look at the early meetings of the three famous DC comics universe superhero characters. This is how they get over their initial distrusts, misunderstandings, and other problems to learn how to work together efficiently to stop problems that any one of them may not be able to handle alone. Batman is not likely to sneak around an island of Amazons again, either.

1 out of 5 stars A disturbing ill conceived creation.......2007-01-15

This book has wonderful art. Bringing together the three most well known of iconic heroes Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman in a globe spanning tale of (sadly) misogny and grit.

The author tries to make the threat of Batman's nemesis "The Demon" virtually a divine character ("as if spawned from a god" ) and then allows him to fight not the Dark Knight but Diana the Wonder Woman an Amazon from an island of beauteous warrior women.

Strangely only the women suffer defeats and attacks in his story. Most notably a battered and bloddy beating for the Amazon, then her island is attacked and "defiled." It appears as if this author is truly upset at women. Reading this story, a story that should be about heroism and nobility and overcoming odds I get the feeling that Wonder Woman represents a girlfriend that upset the author and he get's his "revenge" on women in general by the mischaracterization and degradations he suffers the Amazons and particularly Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is never quite as strong as Superman in the story but instead of just alluding to that, he decides to beat and degrade the most notable icon of feminism.

I would not reccommend this book for a child under 13 and especially not a little girl.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent team up .......2006-12-20

Trinity tells the tale of Batman and Superman's first encounter with Wonder Woman. The villains they must unite against are Ra's Al Ghul, with the assistance of Bizzaro and one of Wonder Woman's fellow Amazons.

Sometimes when too many heroes are put in a story together, the characters fight for story time and don't get a chance to develop. But three is a good number and there's a good balance here, each having something to bring to the table. In this case, it's the big three of DC comics.

Throughout this novel, we get to see each one of them in their own element. Each city has it's own look and feel, just like the heroes that inhabit them. The artwork and narrative tells us exactly how each of these characters are thinking and feeling, from Batman hating Supeman to assist him in flying, down to Batman and Wonder Woman's love hate relationship.

Back to the story. It would be easier in a situation like this, to have the three biggest superheroes battle against their most nefarious villains. Wagner was smart in avoiding the temptation of using Joker, Luthor and Cheetah and giving them a more original match up.

Trinity gives you pretty much what you'd expect, and that's a good thing. I enjoyed watching these characters interact with each other in a way I've never seen before. The little cameos are a nice touch as well. Lois Lane's being the worst of these. She comes off as very loud and annoying, however the seen-but-not-heard appearance of Aquaman makes up for it.

Overall, an excellent, fast read, and should be enjoyable to anyone who's a fan of any of the three stars, my personal favorite being Batman. Check it out.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing new or interesting here.......2006-07-04

I love Superman / Batman / Wonder Woman. They're terrific characters. But this story is underwritten, adequately illustrated, and unsatisfying. The characterizations are cardboard, and the story is just a series of random events with no real payoff. It reads like it was made up as it went along, and lacks a decent story arc or interesting interactions from the BIG 3.

It's not terrible, but it's just not very good. And for a story involving 3 of DCs biggest guns, it is surprisingly uninvolving and flat. Matt Wagner hasn't impressed me with either his writing or art. At least, not in this book. Batman and The Monster Men seemed better. Maybe it was just too big of a story.

As for Wagner's art, it is neither terrible or great, but exactly middle of the road. It gets the job done, but in many of the busier fights, particularly the battle for Paradise Island, the entire thing never really meshes together and never feels as epic or exciting as it should.

Batman and Ra's Alghul suffer the worst in this story. Batman is reduced to a thug who yells and punches people. Ra's is such an ineffective and worthless villain he doesn't seem capable of threatening a school bus, much less an entire world.

Not good. Not good at all.

3 out of 5 stars This was better than OK, but it wasn't great........2006-04-28

The most appealing thing about it was the Superman's characterization. Wagner captures Superman's essential nobility beautifully. Superman isn't just physically super in this story, he is kind, good, and tolerant as well...all without coming across as a goody two-shoes. Wonderwoman feeling as if she is in the presence of Apollo was a very apt comparison. Batman, on the other hand, comes across as a nearly out of control psycho. I'm used to Batman being portrayed as a grim, revenge-obsessed vigilante but here he's rude, brutal, and unlikeable. Batman fans may find this story rather offensive, in fact.
This is something to buy if you are specifically a fan of Wagner's more than something you might want as a fan of one of the three main characters.

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2006-02-11

I will struggle to find words to describe this book, though I can say I think it is beautiful and it is one of my favourites. This is such a lovely, strong, positive look at the autistic experience. It is practical and well informed, realistic, and yet inspirational. I don't know what else to say other than read it, and perhaps a warning... as a person on the spectrum myself, during and after reading this book I felt so much more relaxed and comfortable about being me that I felt even more disconnected than ever from the neurotypical people with whom I must share my life. This book is not just a book for autistic people though... it will give invaluable insight and advice to anyone who wants to see 'through the eyes of aliens'.

5 out of 5 stars Delicate writing covers a revolutionary attitude.......2003-09-27

This author, while she writes with crystalline and seemingly fragile prose, is absolutely uncompromising in her view that autistic people are a unique form of human being who should not be forced to conform to the standards of other people.

By this, she does not mean that autistic people should not learn, or that there are no difficulties associated with autism -- critics often read it as if she says this, but she clearly discusses autism's unpleasant side. She also clearly demonstrates ways to teach autistic people, although, like much of her book, she seems to base her details on a combination of her personal experience and some dubious but well-accepted research. There are more factual errors than it would be possible to list in a review, but this ends up not mattering much to me in the end. Most autistic authors overgeneralize about what the experience of autism is like; O'Neill is no exception to that rule.

What bothers me most about this book, however, is the view that autistic people are fragile creatures that must be shielded at all costs from the "big world". One would think, reading this, that we were all special little dolls made of porcelain. It makes me suspect that the author has experienced the horrors of being abandoned to the clutches of an uncaring and hostile world, but has not experienced the at-least-equal horrors of being overprotected to the point of imprisonment. As such, she unflinchingly advocates residential homes for autistic adolescents, and naively believes that it is possible to tell a good one from a bad one by visiting. Having been placed in a beautiful, abusive residential home as a teen, I'm forced to disagree. You can't judge a book by its cover -- as surely the delicate face on the cover of this book full of tough ideas shows -- and you can't judge a residential home by its appearance on visiting day. Thinking we could led my whole family into grief that none of us have recovered from. After experiences like that, I'm quite willing to take my chances with the abuse the "big world" could dish out -- at least in the outside world you can pack up and move on if you don't like a place.

The only other noteworthy potentially dangerous advice in the book is the author's equally naive belief that herbal remedies are automatically safer than traditional medicines. Plants can be just as poisonous as extracted chemicals, and while I have used a few herbal remedies, I used them with that knowledge in mind.

The author, who has a gentle writing style that belies the strength of her plea for acceptance, never once wavers and says, "Well, in this case autism should be cured." She doesn't believe in prolonging suffering. She believes that unusual-but-harmless things about autism -- like augmentative communication techniques and stimming -- should not be stopped in a person just because more neurotypical movements and communication styles are the social norm. She does not believe in social norms that exclude certain kinds of people, and she explains why very well.

Even among the other books that urge acceptance of autism, a person is unlikely to run across a book with such a pervasive and unswerving attitude of this kind, even in the years since its publication. This is an important book, a historic book, and a book which, if read properly, can translate to an attitude of accepting *all* autistic people as real and valid human beings as we are, and learning to teach us and learn along with us rather than force us into a mold we can never fit. It is a rare book that can cause me to discard nearly all of my misgivings about the details, but this is one of them. I would recommend reading it along with William Stillman's _Demystifying the Autistic Experience_. I would prefer to give this a 9 out of 10 stars, or 4.5 out of 5, but since there are only 5, rounding up can't hurt.

4 out of 5 stars A view into my sons world.......2001-09-14

Ms. O'Neill gave me a chance to see and feel some of the things my beautiful 6 year old son does. He is Autistic and truly a gift. The words to thank Ms. O'Neill for this opportunity of letting this "big worlder" inside my sons private world, escape me. I had highlighter ready and used it often. I will refer back to many passages for years to come.
I was unable though, to give this the highest rating due to the very personal experiences and generalization of them for all autistics the author gave. I felt the authors pain from past discriminations and crule treatment especially in a public school setting. My son is now in 1st grade and fully mainstreamed. He is obviously different to the other children. The kids in his kindergarten class last year and now in 1st grade are nothing but affectionate, kind, patient and understanding. I do not feel it is wrong to mainstream some Autistics. They are individuals and each situation is unique. What is good for one may not be for another.
I also believe this book may not be for the parent of a newly diagnoised child especially if the child is very young. There are portions of the book that are hard to handle for even the experienced parent like myself. What I mean by "handle" is Ms. O'Neills statements that lead me to think she is totally against any intervention at all. While some parents might be looking for the "cure", which in my opinion is pointless and also is denying your childs special gifts , others want to help their child learn to deal with the big world around them. Our goal should be to find a balance. We should give them all chances of being able to cope with life, possibly become independent and to rejoice in who they are and what a gift they are to us and the world.
I encourage you to read this book, though I caution any reader who might not understand this is one persons experiences and may not reflect all Autistics lives.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate information from the source........2001-04-22

I am Autistic, and I love this book. Autism is not a condition, it is a personality type. This book succeeds in making that point. This book is all about acceptance of the Autistic individual, a refreshing change from books about eradicating Autism from the face of the earth. I would also recommend "Walden" by Henry David Thoreau. I believe that it is another book about how an Autistic person views the world. It is of my own opinion that I think he was Asperger's Syndrome.

    Book Description

The accounts given by extraterrestrials in this volume are about events that occured in our solar system many millions of years ago. In that ancient time the solar system consisted of four planets and four "radiar systems" that orbited the central sun. The four planets of the solar system are known today as Venus, Earth, Mars and a now-totally shattered world that was called Maldec.

The term "radiar" applies to the astronomical bodies we presently call Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The original satellites of these radiars are generally called moons by Earth astronomers, but the extraterrestrials prefer to call them planetoids.

This book reflects the personal views of a number of different types of extraterrestrials regarding the state of the local solar system and the state of the Earth: Sharmarie, a Martian; Trome, a Saturnarian; Churmay, a Venusian; Rake, a Jupiterian; Jaffer Ben-Rob of Earth (Sarus); Nisor of Moor; Ombota of Mars, and many more.

5 out of 5 stars The Big Picture.......2006-06-26

This book is a collection of life stories of people who used to live on earth, but now live in other solar systems. It covers an enormous time span, from millions of years ago, to the 19th century. This is one of my top five all time books. I have read it twice, so far. Wes Bateman has done all of us a great service by transcribing and publishing these stories, which are a true history of the planet. There's lots of information about the construction of earth's pyramids, the history of our solar system, and much much more. Truly an epic work, and very accessible.

The info about the "frequency barrier" is so fantastic, you think it could never be topped. Just as you are smiling, nodding your head, saying - "yeah - that's what's wrong here and WOW we can find solutions"....you discover one jaw dropping thing after another. Amazing, one of the most fruitful, fun, enjoyable, educational and full of adventure books I have ever read. Who decided to call this book science fiction? Not a chance!!! You wil have a hard time keeping your copy til the end - so many people will be hounding you to read it.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I've ever read!.......2003-04-19

I've read the book twice because it had alot of information in it that seemed repititious and a little confusing. I take notes on all books that I read. As a result, I've been able to formulate a lot about the aliens such as where they're from, and what they have accomplished with their lives. This is a must read book, even though it is going to take a while to understand everything in it (so don't be in a hurry). I have recommended it to a lot of people. I thank Wesley Bateman for taking the time to author this book.

      2 out of 5 stars A disappointing sequel.......2004-06-03

This sequel to "The Color of Distance" is even weaker than the first. Juna returns to Earth, bringing her adopted son, Moki, and the elder Ukatonen, as ambassadors from the Tendu. It's supposed to be a reverse first-contact story, as the two Tendu learn to live among humans. Instead, it's a preachy discourse on how much humans as a race suck.
What struck me was how, when Juna was marooned among the Tendu, they made her life hell and forced her to conform to their lifestyle. On Earth, everyone bends over backward to accommodate the Tendu, and they still complain. (At least, Ukatonen does. Moki just does a lot of things "exuberantly".) We're made to feel guilty that the Tendu don't have any trees to play in. Well, cry me a river. Less guilt, more story!
Much of the book is also focused on Juna's unexpected pregnancy by Bruce, the nice, sensitive, easy-going, Tendu-liking guy she met at the end of "Distance". Except Bruce goes through a bizarre personality change that is completely unexplained, seemingly only for the purpose of creating an antagonist.
If you like self-flagellation with your science fiction, go ahead and read it, but even as nature-is-so-much-better-than-technology stories go, this one is lacking.

      5 out of 5 stars A fine follow-up!.......2001-11-07

Amy's writing gets even better as she moves along with this second story of Juna Saari. I actually enjoyed this second volume more in some ways than the first, although both are excellent. Amy continues to explore the differences and similaries between the Tendu and humans in a thoughtful and touching manner. For those reviewers below who felt otherwise, I say: "Hey, folks, lighten up." Everybody has differences in the types of works they enjoy reading, and I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed "Through Alien Eyes."

      2 out of 5 stars A disappointing sequel.......2001-06-17

There's nothing worse than a bad followup to an excellent book. Unfortunately, this qualifies.

The storyline is all over the place, no real focus. The author seems confused about what she is trying to show us. Is it the alien culture? The future Earth culture? The alien's reaction to humans? All three seem to be touched upon in this book, but none of them are detailed well enough to be enjoyed.

Based on the content of the book, there's no question that there will be another book to follow. I can only hope that it will rise to the standards set by the first.

In looking at the pair of books, it seems clear (to me) where the problem lay. The first book details a woman coming from a future Earth society who is stranded on an alien planet. Wonderful idea until you have to bring the aliens back to an Earth that the reader knows nothing about. Suddenly you have two focuses, the new Earth and the alien's reaction to humans. Sound familiar? Robert Heinlein did it best in "Stranger in a Strange Land". Anyone reading this book cannot help but compare the two and find "Through Alien Eyes" lacking.

Hopefully, in the next book, the focus will shift away from this challenging subject and Ms. Thomson can dazzle us again in a realm more appropriate to her skills.

2 out of 5 stars Through Alien Prose.......2001-05-25

I could barely get myself to finish reading this book, it had so little forward momentum. There are good ideas, but the writing, plot, and pace are so lifeless that I found myself hoping it would end. The book is as much about the relatively uninteresting human protagonist and her family as it is about the much more interesting aliens. Many of the events in the story are recounted with so little dramatic verve as to sound like an article written for a newspaper account rather than a novel.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful, logical sequel.......2001-04-22

This sequel to The Color of Distance was very well written. The characters' motivations were all explained (unlike the assertions of other reviewers), and the world was highly consistent with the Earth suggested in The Color of Distance.

The human lead had many choices that could have been made on a personal or political basis: The fact that she chose to make them on a personal basis supports the underlying theme of the book rather than making her (in another reviewer's words) "act like a teenager".

Even the main adversaries had motivations that made sense in the world that Ms. Thompson describes, and though the themes she addresses have been raised in other novels, her treatment of them is hardly cliché.

The reviews I read here kept me away from the book for quite a while. However, if you read The Color of Distance and liked it, you will not be disappointed by this book.

5 out of 5 stars Changed my prayer life!.......2006-09-07

Its one of those books that you could close your eyes, flip it open to any page, run your finger down the page to any point, open your eyes and it'll be a quote that you want to put in your sermon on prayer. Get it. Read it...daily.

            5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Book on Prayer--quoted by many many authors.......2006-07-27

This, no doubt, is one of the best works on prayer in the English language, if not the best. A book to be read slowly, quietly and with much concentration. Every line has good rich teaching for us all. Thanks to Baker Book House for compiling this complete printing.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation of Bounds' Books on Prayer Life.......2005-08-18

For almost a century Edward McKendree Bounds' (1835-1913) books on prayer have been classic works, stimulating and inspiring Christians to develop a fuller prayer life and become prayer warriors. A forceful writer and deep thinker, Bounds spent the last nineteen years of his life reading, writing, and praying. He rose at 4 a.m. daily for many years, and was indefatigable in his study of the Bible.

As breathing is a physical reality to us, so prayer was a reality for Bounds. He took the biblical command "pray without ceasing" almost as literally as animate nature takes the law of the reflex nervous system, which controls our breathing.

Because Bounds so diligently practiced what he preached, we was able to capture the essence of prayer, and his works live on to call today's Christians to higher discipleship and an energetic, God-devoted prayer life.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book on prayer........2005-07-17

This book has challenged me and helped mold my understanding and practice of prayer. It calls the believer to stretch and reach further in prayer, putting faith into practice. Bounds' emphasis is on scripture and dependence on Christ.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST and BLUNTEST book ever written on "prayer". .......2005-01-03

About 11 years ago God drew me into an greater understanding and deeper practice of prayer than ever before in my life. I inquired concerning some of the leading "Prayer Ministries" around the world and wrote several of them and asked this question: "What are the top 25 best books ever written on prayer?" Six replied. Many of the same books were recommended, but 1st Place and 2nd Place were the same on all 6 lists. Andrew Murray's book: With Christ In The School Of Prayer was either #1 or #2 on each list. E. M. Bounds writings on "prayer" was also either #1 or #2 on each list.
No book, not even Murray's, has ever been written on "prayer" that can hold a candle to The Complete Works of E.M. Bounds on Prayer. In fact, if you read this book (actually 8 little books) and it doesn't revolutionize your prayer life, then you need to re-read it until it does. If you read this book and think that it is "mediocre", that will be more of a statement about you than about this book. Seldom is any book hailed as the unquestioned "Greatest Book" on a particular subject by ALL the specialists on that subject, but this one is. And the experts are right. So bless yourself or someone today and buy this book. Then get ready for the revolution! God bless. Mike

Is this the same stuff as in the normal book "The Complete Works of E.M. Bounds" except it is just in modern English? No changes or modifications except easier to read? (Like King James Version to New International Version for the Bible?)
