    Book Description

Growing up in 1970s Wisconsin, Carolyn Hermann dreams of becoming a special-education teacher. But she has no idea how demanding her chosen vocation will be until she begins her first job: teaching autistic children in Midlands, South Carolina.

Carolyn's class contains five high-functioning little boys, one of whom, Casey Ross, captures her imagination. Convinced that he is emotionally disturbed rather than autistic--partly because she believes his mother is remote and uncaring--Carolyn fantasizes about curing Casey even though her program director supports the diagnosis of autism.

The following year Carolyn is assigned to teach a class of severely disabled students. Dealing with them is an enormous challenge, and she misses Casey. Burned out after two difficult years, Carolyn leaves teaching to become a homemaker and mother. Yet, despite the fulfillment she finds in this role, she feels like a failure for abandoning her students.

Many years later Carolyn has returned to teaching and attends a convention where she encounters Casey's mother, now a disability-rights attorney. The two women reconnect and find that they have a great deal in common.

And finally, their reunion provides the answer to a question that's haunted Carolyn for decades: Whatever happened to Casey Ross?

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-10-01

I have to agree with the comments, I was very disappointed in this book. Too much technical information and too complicated. Come on, virtual sex scenes, they were not good at all. I usually enjoy all Gennita Low's books but would not recommend this one at all.

    5 out of 5 stars Really Captivating.......2007-09-19

I am a first time reader for LOW, and I thought this book was a great start into what I am sure will be a long relationship with this author. This book is both mentally, and sexually stimulating in that she always has you thinking about what will come next. Pun intended. Great read. Cant wait for the 2nd book.

    1 out of 5 stars Completely disappointed!.......2007-08-28

This series is unlike any of the others Ms. Low, once my favorite author, has written. It's page after page of dialogue, both internal and external, and practically no action. The culmination of the extensive training that the heroine goes through is one very brief mission in a bank. The romance scenes don't measure up to previous books. I will not buy the next in the series and I'm glad I got the first one at the library. I was able to follow all the minute details about the VR training and alternate reality but still found it to be boring. The alternate reality stalker is weak and there's very little plot tension.

    1 out of 5 stars Try again..........2007-07-23

Every author is entitled to test their wings by expanding the dimensions of their chosen genre. Having said this I would STRONGLY urge Ms. Low to remember what has been so potent about her past success. Previous romantic thrillers are bound together by eloquent eroticism and solid, coherent mysteries. Sadly, "Virtually His" has neither. Despite my best effort, I could not get into the virtual reality romance, and found the heroine to be unbelievable. Why would such an intelligent, competent, strong woman settle for virtual anything? I respect Ms. Low's effort, but human touch is germane to romance- without it everything feels like a sham. The bottom line for me is that sensuality cannot be simulated in VR without losing alot of its appeal.

    1 out of 5 stars Well there's a day of my life I'll never get back . . ........2007-07-13

Virtually boring - technical confusing detail, can't believe I stayed with it till the end, but usually I like her books and just kept thinking she'd pull this one out. NOT! It's not even a romance. Where's the HEA??

    4 out of 5 stars Bridge series.......2007-09-17

The first in the bridge series it introduces two central players, Berry Rydell a out of work cop and Chevette, a San Francisco bike messenger. Throughout the story the Golden gate bridge that was made unusable by a earthquake and now functions as a squatters paradise/no mans land looms in the background. This novel is Gibson's first tenative steps toward contemporary fiction. It works, just cutting edge enough to feed the tech heads with solid story and plot lines.

If you are a science fiction fan or a futurist of any sort or just like fiction, you need to read this book. I could write a pious review of the book or praise the author to the heavens, both would be justified. However it's very simple, you need to read this book and see how many people have lifted off Gibson or just been influenced by his work.
Groundbreaking and still relevant 14 years after its initial publication. Truly an original work.

5 out of 5 stars Very Satisfying Story.......2007-06-26

Gibson has become one of my favorite sci-fi authors. This story is plausible, original, and contains both enough character development and action to make it a satisfying read. There is a degree of moral ambivalence that makes the plot line move along: seeming Good Guys can be revealed as Bad Guys, and sometimes it isn't as cut-and-dried as that. Even one of two main characters in the book is a thief, so the world as it is portrayed here is not simply a backdrop for a straightforward morality play. I like that, because it involves the reader more in the characters and the story line.

I also appreciated the implicit humor in the "Cops in Trouble" media program that played a significant role in this novel: a sort of 60 Minutes/advocacy program for police or vigilantes chosen as heroic and telegenic enough to warrant advocacy--and marketing--it comes to the rescue of those who do the right kind of killing and who break laws in the service of the Greater Good. An amusing thought, in a dark kind of way...rather in the mold of how Dick Cheney sees himself, I'd guess.

    5 out of 5 stars FutureNow.......2007-04-26

Science fiction is always really about the present. Futurists speculate about the future. Science fiction writers speculate about the present mostly, by embellishing or exaggerating certain things already present, in a mythical future.

With Virtual Light, Gibson explores the possibilities of science fiction as now, and begins to do a few things. First, he begins to explore the possibilities of being a novelist in a larger, more classical sense, because he does in fact take himself pretty seriously as a writer. And secondly, he starts writing books that are only vaguely science fiction, and could pretty easily be mistaken for contemporary fiction.

But what you have to read between the lines also is that Gibson is a classic hipster and fashion maven. He wrote a sci-fi novel about the then very "hot" bicycle messenger scene taking place in San Francisco, New York, and elsewhere, because this is where the action was at in the city for the "radical" young rockers back then. I was there. Gibson was trying to capture some of the fanatical enthusiasm and freedom experienced by folks living "on the edge" in what way was available to them, and does convey some of that.

And moreover, he conveys some of the real stuff beneath. The dialogue where one of the messengers describes the vanishing middle class and the precarious role of the messenger in the posh office world, this was all real stuff to those of us actually living on that scene back then. The novel is clearly about what's really going on even now in the U.S. and elsewhere; urban blight, gentrification, and the not-so-discreet secession of the very wealthy into a new plutocracy. This is a recurrent theme for Gibson. And from the perspective of a bicycle messenger this was all very plain to see without the benefit of any science fiction, believe me.

And where he confuses a lot of readers is probably that he takes a more artistic direction than would be expected. One of the really interesting things about Gibson is that he's one of those rare kids who grew up with a copy of Delaney's "Dhalgren" in his possession, and who must have gone to art school too. He was strongly influenced by 1960's and 70's "modern art" and modern literature. So this book begins as something resembling science fiction, and like most of his books, ends like a sculpture by Joseph Cornell, if it could be turned to words.

Gibson meditates on a handful of profound ideas in his novels, but is not a very inventive writer, and recycles things to the point of irritating me, since I've read most of his books. If you have read others of his, I'm certain you will recognize certain key phrases and images that he's apparently latched onto. Just like the habit of cleverly incorporating phrases or titles from his favorite songwriters (esp. Steely Dan and Lou Reed) into his text; gets a bit old. But these faults aside, the book was still quite enjoyable.

Virtual Light, to me, was a fantastic collage of now and near future, kind of a less dark vision than "Bladerunner" but more mundane, and thus more realistic. I do not like the sequel to it, "All Tomorrow's Parties," as much. I've found that most of the sequels Gibson has written are weaker than the first; kind of the opportunistic money-making sequel problem.

But as Gibson is, apparently like myself, one of the more slow, meditative types, his creative process reveals things in sharp relief, even if he doesn't pack as many ideas into a novel as the clever cyberpunk writer he's reputed to be. He thoroughly chews and digests ideas like time, memory and history, the contrast between the sacred and profane, and much more than you would expect from a cyberpunk writer, whose stereotype is supposed to be a really clever young guy all jazzed up on caffeine, writing about technotoys. For better or worse, Gibson turned away from that, and has tried to bring more depth to his writing, and this novel is approximately where he started doing that.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding read.......2006-10-07

If you are looking for an adrenaline filled roller-coaster ride then you should look elsewhere. While far from boring this book is like a fine whiskey in that it is meant to be consumed slowly and enjoyed thoroughly. The characters are memorable not for heroic traits or super-human abilities. They are instead memorable as basically normal people who are thrust into extraordinary circumstances. It becomes a true delight when we are given glimpses into their thoughts. This trilogy is at least as good as his Neuromancer trilogy and there is an odd, intriguing asymmetry between the underlying themes of the two trilogies.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A176973. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Helicopter missions are never defined as "...successful navigation to and return from a location." Navigation, in and of itself, is not the mission - it is, however, a skill that all helicopter pilots are expected to master in order to function as pilots. Navigation is a means to an end. Helicopter operations, being inherently expensive and unforgiving of mistakes, are prime candidates for such innovative training techniques as virtual (3-D) fly- throughs. This thesis, as a logical extension of previous research, seeks Out ways to enhance current training methods for urban helicopter navigation using state-of-the-art-technology. Using empirical data from pilot surveys and controlled experiments, principles can be formulated to determine the level of computer graphics fidelity necessary for helicopter crews to conduct a virtual flight in an urban setting that is a credible, effective tool in preparation of an actual flight. This research does not seek a replacement method of training helicopter terrain navigation - pilots must still be taught the fundamental skills of map interpretation and terrain association using conventional training techniques. However, it is the intent of this research to explore methods of enhancing and supplementing site - specific helicopter navigation training through the transfer of spatial knowledge from the virtual world to real-world applications.

This is a ARMY RESEARCH INST FOR THE BEHAVIORAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES ALEXANDRIA VA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A025523. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The U. S. Army Research Institute is investigating the requirements for using Virtual Environments (VE) in training dismounted soldiers. This experiment investigated the effects of different VE parameters on spatial knowledge acquisition by comparing learning in advanced VE, restricted VE, and standard map training. This report also provides information about VE displays, head-coupling, presence, and simulator sickness associated with spatial knowledge acquisition in VE. The activities used during the learning phase of the experiment are generic to dismounted soldier activities. The high level virtual environment (Hi-VE) condition had a Stereoscopic Head Mounted Display (HMD) with fully head-coupled gaze control, and treadmill-based movement control. The restricted VE configuration (Low-VE) used the same HMD with both gaze direction and viewpoint movement controlled by a joystick. The map training participants used expanded topographical maps and were subsequently tested in the Hi-VE configuration. Participants were all trained on the definitions and representational configuration of a reduced set of topographical features, and dismissed if unable to reach a minimum criterion. The Simulator Sickness Questionnaires (SSQ), and the Immersive Tendencies Questionnaire (ITQ) were administered before the VE experience. Participants received training in VE movement and control before the experimental training and testing was conducted. The SSQ was repeated, and a Presence Questionnaire (PQ) was administered after the experimental session.

4 out of 5 stars Sequel to "Second Star", .......2007-04-21

In "Second Star" the heroine, Star Svensdottir, oversaw the creating of the first self-supporting space habitat at L5 and led it to independence as the new nation of Terranova.

This sequel starts off with Star launching a mining expedition to the asteroids, to obtain the materials which the new colony needs. Despite being pregnant with twins, she heads off to the asteroids with 250 people and two small ships. On the way she encounters plague, blood-feuds, and other minor difficulties, but none of them can stop her.

The history presented in this book was pretty obviously not going to happen even by the time it was first published in 1991, but the author felt she had to stick with the background in "Second Star". Since then both technology and history have diverged even more drastically from the story told in the book. The history referred to in the novel includes a contact with an extraterrestial civilisation, the "Librarians," that the Soviet Union not only survived to 1992 without collapsing under its own contradictions but actually conquered Europe that year (pause for hysterical laughter) and that the world population reached 9.5 billion by the turn of the millenium. It also assumed vastly faster human expansion into space than we have actually seen.

However, none of this really spoils the story, most of which is set in space, in the early days of the exploration of the solar system, and it's stilll entirely quite possible that when we, or our children, start building habitats in space and trying to mine the asteroids, the challenges and problems they face will be like the ones in this book.

Not the greatest Sci-Fi ever written, but nevertheless an entertaining read.

1 out of 5 stars Dense, pedestrian, and boring........2004-11-13

A rabid Dana Stabenow fan, I had no idea she had ever written SF. Now I know why this little-known aspect of her past is little-known. Written in 1991, the sequel to "Second Star" finds Star Svendotter leading an expedition and "head(ing) out to the asteroid belt, man's last wild frontier, to make their fortune." I trudged through this book, looking for any hint of the brillant talent that produced "A Cold Day for Murder" in 1992. Nothing. I found nothing. This book's only value lies in what came after it.

5 out of 5 stars A gutsy and very important book.......2003-08-22

This is a courageous topic to write about, and I applaud Kaufman for tackling it. I'm always amazed by the Catholics who are deeply threatened by the fact that a person may inform her conscience and end up with a response that is different from what the Church teaches(when I say "Church" in this case I mean the magisterium, as there is no question that the people of God are also the Church, a fact that Vatican II made joyfully clear).

Some Catholics -- including, apparently, many reviewers of this book -- would have you believe that the Church has never modifed its teaching on any issue, that the "Truth" is complete and unwavering, and that the Church has possessed the Truth since the very first day. I suppose you can believe that if you can overlook slavery, Galileo, usury, the fact that the Church no longer teaches (as it once did!) that married sex is sinful for older people whose reproductive years have passed, etc. With a careful look at Church history, though, it becomes clear that over the years the Church has come closer to the fullness of God's truth in many different areas of morality and human behavior. Growing scientific knowledge and the witness of informed Catholics (sensus fidelium) is a key part of this process. That is why Kaufman's book is so critical. It recognizes that our informed consciences and our lived experience are key parts of our faith, and that we have a responsibility to be thoughtful in our approach to that faith. After all, "catholic" means "universal, wide-reaching." Some dictionaries define it as "broad-minded." If the Catholic Church is going to truly live up to its name, it needs to recognize the witness of informed consciences and to actively listen to its people. And yes -- I do love the Church. That's why I am writing this.

3 out of 5 stars You Must Follow Your Conscience.......2001-05-02

Kaufman does not say that we (Catholics, humans, etc.) can simplt disregard papal teachings. What he stresses is that one must follow his or her conscience. This teaching comes straight out of Vatican II. It does not mean that we can do what we feel like, rather, we must take time to inform our consciences through study and prayer. If a person finds that her conscience tells her that, for example, the not-infallible papal teaching on birth control is not morally correct, then she *must* -- not should, not can, but *must* -- follow her conscience. Straight out of Vatican II -- I'm not making this up.

One hears so little about conscience in the Church. God gave us minds and consciences so that we can use them. (Hopefully, we use them wisely, but that's beyond the scope of this review.) Kaufman's book stresses conscience, and also informs the reader of the history behind some controversial Church decisions, including papal infallibilty.

I found this book to be very interesting and helpful in my spiritual journey.

4 out of 5 stars Having not seen the reviews for this book in some time.......2000-08-16

I was suprised to see that they have suddenly turned negative! Could it be that someone who was particularly offended by this work decided to post his/her views repeatedly--therby "flushing" the reviews that went before?

By the way, the writer of this work does NOT misrepresent Papal infallibility. I went through RCIA a couple of years ago and his description is exactly what we were taught.

1 out of 5 stars Being Catholic: the best package deal you'll find.......2000-06-20

As humans, we like to make up our own minds, rather than acting like "sheep" or "little children". But those words are just how Jesus describes us in the Gospels. He makes it clear that we need guidance from a moral and spiritual authority to live a Christian life.

Where does the authority come from, here on earth? Protestants believe that it comes from the Bible alone, as interpreted by each individual. Eastern Orthodox believe that it comes from their assembly of bishops. As Catholics, though, we believe that Jesus left us with a spiritual leader, our "shepherd" or "holy father", the pope. And he's the highest human authority in our "fold" or "family", the Church.

This is the package we buy into when we call ourselves Catholic. It's what makes us distinctive, and it's what our Catholic brothers and sisters have believed since the earliest days of the Church. Like sheep, or little children, we're called upon to submit our will and intellect to papal teachings. This is true even when the teachings aren't defined as infallible. (Canon Law #752 - look it up.)

The author has based a large part of this book on the misleading suggestion that only infallible teachings need to be followed. (Aside from being incorrect, this inclines us toward the rebellious teenager's question, "how much can I get away with?" rather than the spiritual seeker's question, "how can I come to know God?") Another half-truth surfaces in the author's treatment of conscience. As Catholics, we have the right and the obligation to follow our conscience. We also have the responsibility to form our conscience in line with Church teachings. If those teachings don't make sense to us, it's a sign that our conscience is malformed or immature. In that case, we need to study, ask, and pray for help in understanding. (Cf. Catechism, esp. #1790-1793)

Of course, it's up to God to decide who's a faithful Catholic -- not me, or you, or Phillip S. Kaufman. With that in mind, it makes sense for us to follow the guideposts that Jesus left for us: Sacred Scripture, Church Tradition, and the teaching authority of the Magisterium. It's a big package, and well worth the price.

(To the reviewer below: Yes, Jesus dissented from religious authorities on many occasions. In case you didn't notice, though, he's GOD. Can you say the same thing?)

                                      5 out of 5 stars I AM A GOOD CATHOLIC.......2000-05-03

Kaufmann does a tremendous job of enlightening the history behind the decisions and "other information" all catholics should have. He compels us to examine the basis behind the dogmas, doctrines and encyclicals. A must have for any catholic living with todays social and moral struggles. I can disagree and still be a good catholic.......I was ready to leave the church til I read this book!
