Book Description

Third in a series of recovers of the classic Preludes series.

First launched over a decade ago, the Preludes series has continued to prove popular with Dragonlance fans. This re-release of Brothers Majere showcases a new look for the forthcoming recovers of the remainder of the series. The title features cover art from lead Dragonlance artist Matt Stawicki and includes a short introduction by New York Times best-selling author Margaret Weis.

Before the War of the Lance...

Darkness and unrest are growing. People disappear in the night, and there are rumors of foul forces at work. To this land caught in the grips of a nameless terror come Raistlin and Caramon Majere, two brothers--one a wizard, one a warrior--who are trying to eke out a living on the backroads of Ansalon. Desperate for money, they agree to take on a job in the backwater village of Mereklar. But they soon discover they may be in over their heads. A beautiful noblewoman, a savage beast, the Queen of Darkness, and a spellbound kender will decide the fates of the brothers Majere.

4 out of 5 stars Much better than the previous two........2004-12-12

After reading the first two books in this series, I was pleasantly surprised with this one. There are only a few very minor inconsistencies which aren't really worth mentioning. The main reason I think this one turned out was Margaret Weis contributed some advice as it says in the dedication section.

It isn't the kind of gold that the original books were, but all in all, the Raistlin was believable, the Caramon was believable, and the story was pretty good.

On the down side though, the book had a couple slow spots in it that I had to force myself to keep reading through. My favorite thing was probably that Raistlin stays true to form and uses his wits to deal with problems more often than just using magic.

I would give it 3 1/2 stars if I could, but I can't so I give it a 4. All in all, it is a relativley good book with a mix of minor mistakes and redeeming qualities that I am glad I took the time to read.

3 out of 5 stars One of the better Dragonlance: Preludes.......2004-09-14

I know a lot people really didn't greatly care for it but I thought it was really good and truly enjoyed it. It's just one of thoughs that you'll just have to read and decided for your self.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty poor.......2003-09-28

It's pretty hard to make a bad novel about Raistlin Majere... one of the most compelling fantasy characters ever created, but this novel really takes the cake. It's just not good. Does anyone care about missing cats? Thank goodness the 'Cat Lord' comes to help. Caramon is irritatingly portrayed as the stock simpleton, and Raistlin can't decide whether to love him or treat him awfully. You receive no new insights into either character, and like the other two preludes that come before it this should never have been allowed to be included in the Dragonlance Saga. It cheapens every other book in the series. Unless you're a hardcore DL collector pass this one bye because you won't be missing a thing.

1 out of 5 stars A poor addition to the world of Dragonlance........2002-08-21

Brothers Majere starts off well and offers a new and never-before-seen adventure the likes of which I have never seen. However, it quickly degenerates into The Classic Dragonlance Plot, but without the epic feel Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman incorporate in their novels. The author also made two gigantic mistakes which contradict lines located in Tales of the Lance and Dragons of Autumn Twilight. The Soulforge and Brothers in Arms are much better than Brothers Majere.

4 out of 5 stars Gotta love Raistlin.......2002-08-09

Yes, the premise of disappearing cats seems a bit ridiculous to say the least, but somehow envolving Raistlin automatically gives the story a little dignity.

The plot envolves a scared city that is losing all the cats that are supposed to protect the town. Raistlin and Caramon are naturally called in to solve the mystery which slowly evolves into a murder case when town officials end up dead, looking like they've been killed by a very large cat. Enter Shavas, a beautiful official that shows more interest in both twins than is professional and is much more than what she seems. Eventually all hell breaks loose (literally) and Bast, the cat lord, comes to help.

Raistlin is much softer in this book than the later version. He gripes and complains and treats Caramon awful, but he truly seems to care about his brother. Caramon is just the big old dope he always is and I wish Bast was a real character that was used again in later novels. Shavas is a wonderful archvillain and even when the action gets a little confusing at the end, she's always a perfect story line to go back to.

This really was a good book in this series. Read it if only to see a younger, kinder Raistlin.

What The Red Tent did for Dinah, The Gilded Chamber, a first novel by Rebecca Kohn, might do for Esther, the woman who wielded power over a King. The story follows the Book of Esther very closely: Xerxes banishes his wife Vashti and sets about finding a new wife by claiming all the young virgins in the kingdom of Persia for his perusal and delectation. Esther, born Hadassah, is a young Jewish orphan, remanded to the custody of her cousin Mordechai, to whom she is betrothed. Mordechai attends to the King at the Palace, but no one knows that he is a Jew. He warns Hadassah to take the name Esther when she is swept up by the King's edict, and not to reveal her heritage.

After a year of being pampered by court slaves, Esther is presented to the King. He is instantly smitten and makes her his Queen. sther longs for Mordechai but succumbs to the blandishments of the King to save herself from being sent to the soldiers--a horrible fate. In the course of Palace intrigue, Haman, a truly evil man who is viewed as a trusted servant of the King, plots to kill Mordechai, who will not bow to him, and ultimately to kill all the Jews in the Kingdom. King Xerxes, a bit of a buffoon both in the Bible and in Kohn's book, is languishing under the effects of idleness and too much wine. He gives Haman his signet ring; Haman drafts the edict which will result in the death of the Jews and seals it with the King's ring. Now, Esther must save her people.

The portent of this book is found not in the story alone, but in the meticulous research that Kohn has done into the time: Palace life, social customs, history, sexual practices, the place of women, war and politics. Descriptions of the care given to Esther before she meets the King are detailed: her trips to the hairdressers, her hennaed hands, the pungent oils rubbed all over her body, the gold-trimmed clothing she wears. She describes her dinner with a eunuch: "Golden cups in the shape of tulip blossoms were filled with sweet spiced wine from Hodu, and shining silver platters were piled high with meat stews and succulent birds I could not identify. A plate of sugared almonds and pistachios ... and a sweet of sesame, dates and honey..." She is willing to sacrifice all creature comforts to save her people; her success is celebrated to this day in the Jewish feast of Purim. --Valerie Ryan

                    Book Description

For centuries her name has been a byword for feminine beauty, guile, and wisdom. This sweeping, meticulously researched novel restores Esther to her full, complex humanity while reanimating the glittering Persian empire in which her story unfolded. Esther comes to that land as a terrified Jewish orphan betrothed to her cousin, a well-connected courtier. She finds a world racked by intrigue and unfathomable hatreds and realizes that the only way to survive is to win the heart of its king. Passionate, suspenseful, and historically authentic, The Gilded Chamber illuminates the dilemma of a woman torn between her heart and her sense of duty, resulting in pure narrative enchantment.

                    4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-08-03

I thought this was a very good book. As for historical accuracy, not so sure. Its more....'trashy', for lack of a better word, then The Red Tent, and I wouldn't recommend it to my ministers wife, but I enjoyed it. Fast paced, it didn't stall out @ all. I really was sad when it was over, I miss the characters, which is exactly how a book is supposed to make you feel.

2 out of 5 stars Promising but fails to deliver.......2007-07-22

This is one of those books I found most promising and I wanted to like it even more. But it gets to be boring and it doesn't completely deliver. The idea is there. And it has an excellent start but then it doesn't lift off. Still, it can make a good easy read. The characters are quite one-dimensional, particularly the heroine Queen Esther, who never truly comes to life. Historical fiction is such a hard genre and this book proves it. Yet, it is not completely bad. It has its moments.

2 out of 5 stars Bland and Boring.......2007-06-05

I would really like to give this book a good review because the subject matter is surely captivating, but I found the book to be bland and redundant. Esther comes across as weak and almost whiny. I couldn't wait to get to the end just so I could stop reading the author's limp text and over-extravagant description of everything. Not reccommended.

                    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2007-01-10

The Gilded Chamber was a very good book that I found to be well written and very engaging. I couldn't stop reading it. Anyone who enjoyed The Red Tent will find this book equally as stellar.

                    5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written.......2007-01-03

This is a gripping tale of a strong and beautiful woman. I was moved by this story.

                        5 out of 5 stars fantastic.one of the best ST:OS books.......2006-12-20

I know one shouldn't judge a book by its cover but I admit to being skeptical when I saw the cover of this book and read the title. I thought it would be one of the 'goofier' star trek paperbacks.

Luckily, I was wrong! Not only is this book far from goofy, it's one of the BEST star trek books I've read to date.

A great adventure for Kirk and Crew as they encounter Klingons on the verge of mutiny, a strange alien race and a space phemonemon that could destroy life as we know it.

And speaking of the Klingons, they were among my favorite characters in the book. It's nice when the author mixes things up from the norm. I leave it to the reader to find out the rest.

Highly recommended! A favorite of mine that stands right up there with Black Fire, Way of The Romulans, My Enemy My Ally, Yesterday's Son and The Covenent Of the Crown. GREAT READ!

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but not stellar.......2006-04-04

The great thing about these novels is that they allow authors to explore characters that were often left as bystanders in the television show. In this case, Uhura is the character that most of the action converges around.

A plausible romance for her though one that progresses oddly and at times inappropriately (in my mind) for her position on the Enterprise, something I think the author was aware of but willing to ignore for the sake of her story.

What was neat was how this book seemed to tie into parts of the Star Trek cannon that haven't even come into existance yet (at the time of the book's publication). The aliens, The Singers, are early on compared to Earth's humpbacked whales, and there is a space time rip that sucks in people and planets but doesn't actually kill them (Nexxus anyone?)

Several non-bridge member characters played large roles in this book. Kor, one of Kirk's classic Klingon adversaries. His wife Kali, a neat addition, who I rather enjoyed, though might have been a bit more klingony. Two other klingons are relatively well developed as well, I really have to object to Kor's best friend's name though--Kandi, is not a male sounding name let alone a warrior klingon.
And most importantly, Maslin, Uhura's love intereste. A sort of Beethoven-esque composer, though less endearing that perhaps that composer. A man of tempers and ill health, he is this story's martyr.

I really loved the complexity of the plot and the aliens that Snodgrass created for this story. My only other complaint was that at times certain characters (such as Spock) spoke and acted in ways that seemed uncharacteristic to me.

All in all this was a very enjoyable book, a nice bit of escapism, and one I could have seen as an episode on the show. Which to me is the ultimate test for these books.

5 out of 5 stars ST-TOS: The Tears of the Singers.......2003-03-06

Star Trek-The Original Series: The Tears of the Singers written by Melinda Snodgrass is a classic Star Trek adventure. This book is one of the early TREK adventures as Captain James T. Kirk and the U.S.S. Enterprise crew join in with the Klingons to stop a disaster brewing in the Taygeta V star system.

Classic TREK where a time/space warp without all of the baggage is how I'd call this book. The alien culture is interesting and working with the Klingons is difficult, but the storyline is captivating making for good action-adventure.

In this book Uhura is the crew member that shines as this is a well-written book. Taygeta V is inhabited by a semi-aguatic race of beings that are being hunted for their tears. It seems that when they die they secreat a jewel-like substance. Of course Uhura is the communications officer and she can communicate with the Taygetians as they are the singers and they inform her of what is happening.

Spock, of course, puts two and two together and suspects a link between the space/time anomoly with the Taygetians. While the Klingons will be Klingons, this makes for an interesting tale, with the fate of the Federation and with the entire universe to be saved Kirk and crew make it make a valent attempt to make things right.

If you're looking for a classic TREK adventure this is a good book to read. This is early TREK, but the writing is excellent and things that happen in this book even though are minor, will be considered in the whole of the TREK cannon. A multitude of worlds would ring with their particular brand of music that sang to the spheres, the Taygetians are interesting race.

                        4 out of 5 stars A good classic Trek novel. . ........2002-06-06

In my reviews of Classic Star Trek novels, it must be understood that I adhere to the original canon as invisioned by Gene Roddenberry, and not the "Star Trek" universe accepted by Rick Berman and company.

I generally rate a classic novel thus:

Adherence to Canon -- does this novel adhere to the vision of the original Star Trek?

Yes, in my opinion, it does. The principles of the Prime Directive come very much to the fore.

Believability (within the confines of 23rd century Star Trek viability) -- is this novel well-plotted and well written? Can I picture this novel or imagine myself in it?

                        Again, yes. Quite so.

Coherence and Consistency -- does this novel internally consistent? Is it consistent with other Star Trek novels by the same author? Is it consistent with what is known of the CLASSIC Star Trek universe?

Again, yes. The fan of "Classic Trek" will appreciate the traditional Klingons.

Mitigating Factors -- pluses or minuses which dramatically affect the enjoyment of this book

As someone who appreciates fine music of many genres, the fact that the entire plot was based on a musical theme was an added bit of enjoyment. The notion of the (literally) creative properties of music was also interesting to me as a theologian. (See the creation sequences in both JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis).

Altogether, an enjoyable "Classic Star Trek" experience.

The attempt to define what we mean by God, and indeed goodness, has been the central preoccupation of Western religion and philosophy.

4 out of 5 stars interesting and informative basic work on "God".......2007-05-11

this introductory work aims to hit the main issues dealing with the subject of "God". Tackles philosophical and theological areas of inquiry, covering a surprising amount of ground for it's size. Not an easy read per se, but manageable for beginners who are willing to use and exert a some brain power. A good book to get your philosophical and theological gears turning.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, so far.......2006-05-31

This is the book I've been looking for all these years. It comes as close to not taking sides and presenting both sides as any book I've ever seen. Unfortunately, my father borrowed it from me and I'm going to have to wait for the last half. Dad seems to have relocated his love of reading and even decided to banish the TV a couple of nights a week after picking up this book.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling argument for the existence of God.......2004-07-26

I picked up this book because I wanted to give faith another chance in my life. While I'm not completely conviced yet (no book should change you overnight), I am more likely to believe after reading this book. It's lean on pages, but thick on information. The authors of this book set out their case by comparing and contrasting arguments against the existence of God. As you'd expect, no argument against God cannot be countered with one for God. This book uses a very intellectual and philosphic approach to both sides of the case. It has chapters that touch on the arguments for the existence of God, attacks on God, the attributes of God, life after death, God and science, and several others. The result is a book that will sway you, if you, like me, lost faith solely because science didn't add up with religion.
